I have not seen a lot of films in the theatres but I did rent a number of dvds and i will list them below... the theatre ones I have seen

Faves:
1. The Queen
2. Prairie Home Companion
3. Water (Mehta Deepa film)
4. Devil Wears Prada (The book is better though)
5. The Illusionist

I liked but the following but it was not among my favorite ones but it was not the worst film I saw this past year:
Da Vinci Code

Worst:
1. Talladega Nights - I was forced to go to this one.

DVD/VHS that I saw this past year:
1. Madness of King George
2. Gangs of New York
3. DreamKeeper
4. House Made of Dawn
5. Powwow Highway
6. Philadelphia Story
7. Monsoon Wedding
8. Pride and Prejudice
9. Bride and Prejudice
10. Nowhere in Africa

Worst:
1. Caveman - dont ask -- I was forced to watch it with two friends
2. Cheyenne Autumn
3. American Pie movies - Too many plot gimmicks and not enough story!
6. Black Dahlia - was expecting more and found it disconcerting to watch
7. Kill Bill movies both of them...
9. Man Called Horse
10. Mary Reilly - I like Julia Roberts but she should not do a Scottish or an Irish accent. YIKES!!

Good morning, all!  And a special welcome to missmikah!

Someone sent me a wonderful package of chocolate fudge and I overindulged yesterday.  My stomach is a mess.

My plans today include a trip to the NYPL to look at all of the Townsend Walsh BABES IN TOYLAND scrapbooks for one last time (sob!).  Mr Walsh was the publicist for producer Fred Hamlin, and he kept meticulous scrapbooks on their shows.  His collection, which is in both the Theatre Collection and the Manuscript Division, consists of books, posters, and a ton of scrapbooks.  There are 4 or 5 huge scrapbooks of newspaper clippings for BABES IN TOYLAND.

DR tomovoz, the popular song history that has not made the Anna Russell CDs is the one that includes the Victorian parlor song "How sad and sweet the days that come While playing my harmonium."  I love the popular song group with the great Jimmy Carroll Five.

TOD:
  The Illusionist
  The Queen
  The Devil Wears Prada

I can't even get to 10!

DR MattH, reading about your smaller theatre problem I was thinking that DREAMGIRLS was playing in one of the smaller theatres in the multiplex we went to.

But by my estimation the small theatre must have at least 600-800 seats.

It felt small till you said yours had only 75!

Speaking of Paul Newman films department:  can one of you filmophiles give me your best educated guess as to what studio might have had a Newman property circa 1962 called Mollie.  It was based on a recurring character (real-life) in A. J. Leibling's WWII stories, a guy (Mollie was a guy) who happened to be an enlisted man under my father's command.  My Dad is in all of the stories, continually dealing with Mollie's f***ups and lack of proper Army discipline.  I remember some studio (20th Century Fox maybe--was Newman ever under contract to Fox, especially in the early 60s?) calling my Dad out of the blue in that time period and putting him on retainer as a technical consultant, but the film was never made.  I'm now compiling info on my Dad for a 60th Infantry site and wanted to get my facts straight on this particular chapter.

Newman did a LOT of Fox pictures in the early 60's, so my guess is you are correct.

A special welcome to new Dear Reader Missmikah.  You will find that this Living Room is filled with a wonderful assortment of folks of every variety, shape, kind, ethnicity, religion, orientation, persuasion, height, weight, and geographical locale !

Now it is time to do some work for the day...

Good morning dear Esteemed BK --  I don't have a question for right now, but I'm so glad that you have mentioned several times about the ridiculous and annoying "current trend" in sound tracks for movies.  Every camera move has that stupid "high to low frequency fast swoosh" and then a thud at the end of it so that all of the sub-woofers will hit you in the gut.....and all of that is at at least 130 db .  And then at the same time, the friggin' dialogue track has everybody talking in breathy whispers, with many words being completely lost!!  Who the hell thinks this has to be this way???

I didn't see many 2006 films in the theater. Of the ones I saw, DREAMGIRLS is the best, but I can't give a Top 10 list because I just didn't see enough of this year's films, even on DVD. I'll see many of them once they show up on HBO/Showtime/Starz, but I just haven't seen enough of them yet.

For example, I'm still catching up with films of 2005. Both A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE and the Kira Knightley PRIDE AND PREJUDICE are on my DVR recorded off HBO-HD, and I'd like to see at least one of them today if I can get to it.

I don't think I've seen ten movies this year, either.  Of the ones I did see and liked:

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA (Though I still detest that final shot of Streep in the limo with the wistful smile on her face.)
THE ILLUSIONIST
THE QUEEN
A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION

I've yet to see DREAMGIRLS--probably won't get to that until after New Year's Day.

I didn't see very many 2006 movies...and of those I did see nothing stands out as anything I would put in a top 10...maybe DOSTI, FRIENDS FOREVER...it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. I saw several wonderful films from 2005 in 2006, however.

So....I guess I have no answer for the TOD. LOL!

Hi, MusicGuy--the building in question is the Gen. M.B. Kauffman Building at historic Ft. Douglas in Salt Lake City.  My father was the Senior Officer there for over 40 years and saved the Fort from destruction in the early 70s.  At the same time he founded the Ft. Douglas Military Museum, which is housed in the building named after him.  The Military Museum is one of the largest in the US and one of the few (surprisingly) that devotes exhibits to all branches of the armed services.  It's right in the middle of a gigantic multi-million dollar capital campaign which will expand it to a completely huge and remodeled facility, still named after my father.

The other people in the photo would be DW Betsy and DS's Gabe and Zach.  The fourth "person" is my formerly fat belly which has seen a sizeable reduction this past year.  :)

In THE FILMS OF 20th CENTURY-FOX, there was no listing for MOLLIE in 1961 or 1962, and it wasn't listed in the index at all, but that volume may not be all inclusive.

Yes, MattH, that's because it was never made (as I stated in my first post).  The book was optioned and Newman was attached to star.  I'm 99% sure Fox called my Dad and actually paid him some relatively tidy sum to be on "retainer" as a technical consultant, but then the project was shelved for some reason.  I'm just trying to figure out if my memory of the studio being Fox is correct.

And I didn't read ANY good reviews for THE BLACK DAHLIA, and it certainly sank like a stone at the box-office.

I remember Hartnet and Swank receiving particularly scathing reviews. Unless Swank is playing a tomboy, she usually doesn't fare too well. I've had to watch the trailer for her new film premiering in January a couple of times over the last few days (about a  teacher struggling against gangs in her school), and it doesn't appeal to me either.

DR Jeanne, from movies which were released in 2005 (most of which I saw in 2006) were GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, TRANSAMERICA, and HOODWINKED, MY BROTHER NIKHIL, KAAL.... Those are the ones that come to mind.

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!

Hmm... Is it nap time already?...

I slept very lightly last night... Every time the heat went on, it would wake me up.  So... I guess I was waking up every 20 minutes or so.  I finally got some sound sleep around 5:00, I believe.  -And, of course, just as I was turning off the TV, the news broke about Gerald Ford's death, so...  In any case...

Good morning!  Good Afternoon!

I'm watching a movie with Isabella Rosellini and Aidan Quinn called "Lies of the Twins". It's trashy but I feel compelled to see how it turns out.
So, Isabella and Aidan are good friends of yours, or did they just drop by?

As for the Topic of the Day...  I might have seen 10 movies in theatres this year...  I think... And I liked most of them, so...  Let's see what I can come up with, remember...

(in no particular order)

-"The History Boys" - Ah!... Dominic Cooper and Jamie Parker in a towel - alas, not the same towel, but still..  I like that bit of "expansion" from the stage play/version.  Yes, the movie may have been a bit stage-bound, but I thought it worked for what it was.
-"Running With Scissors" - Well, I liked this one, but didn't love it.  I wish more of the humor had been retained from the book.
-"The Devil Wears Prada" - I loved playing "Name that NYC locale" while watching this movie.
-"The Departed" - I went in not expecting to like this one at all, but, Wow!, What a ride!
-"Little Miss Sunshine" - A very sweet movie with some great ensemble work.
-"Strangers With Candy" - So wrong on so many levels... But in a good-wrong way.  ;)
-"Sunset Boulevard" - Yes, I know this movie did not come out originally in 2006, but I saw it this year for the first time on the big screen.  It really was a treat seeing this on the silver screen.

And that's about all I can remember for now...

Most of the films der Brucer and I saw in theaters this year were films we took the grandlads to see, and therefor were animated stuff.

Over the Hedge was good.  Ice Age 2: Meltdown was terrible.  I'm having trouble remembering what else we took them to see.  Taking them to bookstores is more fun.

The Illusionist and The Prestige were both interesting, but far too contrived for their own good.

Superman Returns and X-Men: The Last Stand were both disappointments.

I enjoyed Casino Royale a lot.

I'm trying to think of what else we saw in the theaters this year.  That might be the full list.

So...  Just a few catching up questions...  ;)

Did anyone else get the Special Edition of the Dreamgirls OCR?  The two disc version with a couple of previously unreleased tracks - including "It Ain't Over"(!!!) - and the karaoke tracks on the second disc along with a not-so-good dance mix of "And I Am Telling You...".

I only ask since I haven't seen that many copies in the stores, and it's no longer listed on Amazon - which is where I got it from.  I wonder if the release of the film soundtrack bumped it from the inventory.

DR George - I'm lovin' that Borders Rewards program.  Those weekly coupons sure do come in handy.  And then if you happen to be able to use different coupons at the same time for different items (one for a book, one for a CD, one for a DVD), and then couple that with a personal shopping day for an extra 10% off... That's some "Reward".  *That 40% off DVD Boxed Sets coupon last week came in handy for last-minute Christmas shopping.

I got the Dreamgirls 2 CD set - it's nice, and it's nice to have the unreleased tracks.  I wish it were a more theatrical-sounding cast album - it was produced as if it were a pop album, which was a mistake, I think.  I like it much better than the soundtrack, though.

I think artists should be judged on their best work (if they have any) - everyone has off days, even geniuses.  Not all Preston Sturges films equal his best, nor Billy Wilder or Hitch, or Ford, nor Cary Grant, nor De Niro, nor Brando, and on and on.

Hmm... Continuing the high concept... GROGGY BOTTOM - That would be a great name for a coffee shop/breakfast place around George Washington University.  ;)

*Which reminds me of a pair of establishments that used to be in Norfolk - at least I don't think they're in existence any more...  You could start (and end) your evening at "The Emergency Room"... And then once they closed up shop in the wee hours, you could toddle/stumble across the street to their sister establishment for some breakfast and strong, black coffee... "The Recovery Room". :)

I signed up for that while Xmas shopping. But I didn't get anything from them that explained how you use the rewards. The clerk tried to explain it but there were too many people in line. I guess I'll check their website.

Worst:
1. Talladega Nights - I was forced to go to this one.

This was actually one of the few releases I saw in a theatre this year. Sad, isn't it. So since I had little basis for comparision, I thought it was quite funny. I've done a lot of work with NASCAR in the past and am more familiar with the "culture" than I thought I would ever be, so maybe that was the appeal.

I did see a lot of great films at festivals, though.

Hi, MusicGuy--the building in question is the Gen. M.B. Kauffman Building at historic Ft. Douglas in Salt Lake City.

Music Guy, I'm glad you asked that because I've always wondered that, too (about the 3 other people, that is.)

It's very interesting to hear about your father, DR JMK. I'd like to visit the military museum some time. (I'm an ex-Coast Guard brat, myself.)

My plans today include a trip to the NYPL to look at all of the Townsend Walsh BABES IN TOYLAND scrapbooks for one last time (sob!).

A friend of mine was shopping at B&N with her teenagers. They had been there the day before and the kids accused her of buying a porn video for their dad. She was dumbfounded. They smirked knowingly and told her that they had seen her buying a copy of "Babes in Toyland"!

She suggested that they all watch it together that night, and they may learn something. I guess they learned not to make snap judgements!

I wish I could have been there when they started watching it!

*And I really have taken advantage of those weekly coupons.  And sometimes I've really taken advantage of them: You're only supposed to use each coupon, once each day.  Well... If you're like me, then you print out a couple copies of the coupons for that week - usually just a weekend.  Then go to one store and buy one item.  Then if there happens to be another Borders store in the area... And so on and so forth.  Then repeat the following day.  *There are actually four Borders stores within a ten mile radius of the theatre, so... -Two of them only three Metro stops away even!   :)

*And even though I've become a fan of Amazon.com of late, there a couple of items that I've been able to buy at Borders with the coupons that Amazon only sells at a limited discount.

We got a gift of some delectable brownies, and in the very same box the brownies came in was a catalogue which included the price of such brownies.  I know companies send out catalogues later to gift recipients sometimes, but this struck me as a little tacky, putting the ctaalogue inside the gift box.

An ask anyone who knows question:  Maybe BK's close personal friend Nick Redman can ask Shirley Jones this, but, in listening to their commentaries on Oklahoma! and Carousel, I started wondering why Shirley wasn't at least tested for South Pacific.  Everyone goes on and on about how it should have been Doris Day, but I wonder why Shirley wasn't considered.  I think she would have been perfect casting.  Does anyone know?

Had an interesting afternoon at the movies - in my den.

Actually, I began with TV: another CSI episode from the first disc in the set. This one also involved two cases (three deaths): one of a Brad Pitt-like movie star and another of two Laotian men, Interesting set-ups for the murders but not knock-your-socks-off shocking.

Back from the cake and the wake.  I'll go back later this afternoon, but at one there were only two people in the store - rather pathetic, and which just shows people's true "what have you done for me lately" colors.  I had a piece of the cake, as did everyone in the store.

Next came A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE. I hadn't seen this at the movies or on DVD, so this HBO presentation was my first experience with it. Terrific!

I thought I had the movie pegged to be another DESPERATE HOURS/STRAW DOGS type of movie. Boy, was *I* off the beam! Wonderful suspense and surprises. And I LOVED Viggo's son in the confrontation in the hallway at school. I was CHEERING!

BTW, I greatly appreciated David Cronenberg not extending the movie past the breaking point. I have gotten so tired of these overlong for no good reason films lately, and this one was an hour and 36 minutes, perfect for the story it was telling.

I heard the mail arrive right near the end of A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, and HOORAY! Three Blu-ray discs that I had ordered had arrived.

So, I put in the one I had been most looking forward to seeing: THE SEARCHERS.

Well, my socks were knocked off by the depth of picture, the sharpness, and vivid Technicolor of the Blu-ray high definition presentation of this classic.

I've been watching high def TV and movies off pay cable channels for several years now, but I kept reading from those with these HD players that high def DVDs were even sharper and more three dimensional than TV or cable broadcasts. I didn't see how it was possible, but now that I've seen a truly quality transfer on Blu-ray, I can see EXACTLY what folks have been raving about.

TALLADEGA NIGHTS was a little flat looking: sharp but not particularly looking like you were looking through a clear window onto reality. THE SEARCHERS took my breath away with its dimensionality, the depth of focus (helped, of course, since it was shot in Vistavision), and clarity.

What a terrific way to enjoy one of the great films of all time in the best possible way at home.

That's some "Reward".  *That 40% off DVD Boxed Sets coupon last week came in handy for last-minute Christmas shopping.

The special edition OBC is still available on Amazon.com.  Click HERE (http://www.amazon.com/Dreamgirls-Henry-Krieger/dp/B000JJRWQC/sr=8-5/qid=1167255889/ref=pd_bbs_5/102-4691709-0642501?ie=UTF8&s=music) for the link. :)

OKAY - get in trouble time:

What do you consider your best work (CD wise)?

I simply refused to watch MI:III.  I can no longer watch a film with Tom Cruise in it and be able to separate his off-screen persona with what happens on-screen.  As an actor, he has now jumped the shark.  A pity, because he's done good work in the past.

Same way I feel about Jane Fonda.(Again a pity)

Too hard.  I'm proud of almost everything I've done, in one way or another.  My best?  Well, I'd certainly put Unsung Irving Berlin high on the list for any number of reasons.  Worst - I don't think that way, really, but I do know that everyone's least favorites seem to be Bed and Sofa and The Paul Simon Album - the latter, in retrospect, is something I shouldn't have done - it was a no-win album because many of Mr. Simon's songs don't need to have B'way singers singing them.  I was forced into doing it after the Burt Bacharach Album - I was in the middle of prepping what was to be that album's followup - The Randy Newman Album - I shouldn't have let myself get talked out of it, but I did, and the compromise (the Paul Simon Album) was a compromise and it sounds like it.  That said, I like the sound of the album, and I like many of the tracks (especially the Tammi Tappan and Amanda McBroom tracks).

I can only think of five movies that I've seen in the theater, and they're listed in favorite order:

Brokeback Mountain (loved!)
Casino Royale (liked a lot)
X-Men 3: The Last Stand (enjoyed the special effects)
King Kong (special effects went on way too long)
The Da Vinci Code (didn't grab me, but didn't hate it ::))

And there you have it. ;)

It was based on a recurring character (real-life) in A. J. Leibling's WWII stories, a guy (Mollie was a guy) who happened to be an enlisted man under my father's command.

Sounds like it would have made a nice film:

Wes Phillips (http://blog.stereophile.com/wesphillips/091106liebling/Wes Phillips)
Quote
Best of all his war writing, I think, was "Quest for Mollie," which is collected in Mollie and Other War Stories. Mollie (Karl Warner) was a private Liebling met in Tunisia—well, met posthumously, since Liebling saw him as a roadside corpse on Good Friday, 1943. But Mollie's friends regaled him with tales of Mollie's life back in New York City, so upon returning to NYC, Liebling set out to learn more about him.
New Yorker (http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/articles/040329fa_fact1?040329fa_fact1)
Quote
In “Quest for Mollie,” Liebling tells of travelling during one offensive on La Piste Forestière, a dirt road on the northern coast of Tunisia, where Allied forces had fought Italian and German troops, and coming across the refuse of fighting—“bits of the war . . . like beads on a string.” He encountered a lone corpse, “a private known as Mollie.” A month later, after the Allied victory in North Africa, Liebling heard more about “Mollie,” evidently a colorful native of Hell’s Kitchen, and so, back in New York, he moves around the city, from bar to union headquarters, reconstructing the often contradictory details of Mollie’s life, and giving an ordinary young man a representative immortality. “When I walk through the West Side borderland between Times Square and the slums, where Mollie once lived, I often think of him and his big talk and his golf-suit grin. It cheers me to think there may be more like him all around me—a notion I would have dismissed as sheer romanticism before World War II. Cynicism is often the shamefaced product of inexperience.”
Wild Bill Guarnere (http://forums.wildbillguarnere.com/index.php?showtopic=1017)
Quote
From the New Yorker June 2, 1945. Told by an American infantryman to reporter A.J. Liebling

"Mollie was the biggest pop off and the biggest screwball and the biggest foul-up I ever saw and he wasn't afraid of nuthin'. Some fellows get brave with experience but Mollie never had none to begin with. Like one time on the road to Maknassy, the battalion was trying to take some hills and was gettin' nowhere. So Mollie stands up and says "I bet those Italians would surrender if somebody asked them to. What the Hell do they want to fight for?" So he walks across the monefield and up the hill to the Italians, waving his arms and making funny motions. So they shoot at him for a while and then stop, thinking that he's crazy. So when he gats to the Italians he finds a soldier who was a barber in Astoria but got drafted when he went home to Italy to visit. So the barber translates for him and the Italians say "Sure! We'd love to surrender!"

So Mollie comes back down the hill with 568 prisoners."

Blech...and the directing experience already hits a roadblock.

To basically sum up how the one-acts work at LACC, provided there are enough student directors (this time, we have seven), they divide the shows up into two bills - The Blue Bill and the Red Bill (creative, huh?) - based on content, actors, sets, etc.  We have three shows on the Blue Bill -- and the other four on the Red (one of which is mine).  Our project over this break was to set up our rehearsal schedules and get them to our instructor by tomorrow.  Of course, everyone has waited until the last minute...some didn't start until today...and the previously ignored problem of shared actors came immediately to light.

We had around 18 or 19 actors on casting, and a grand total of 43 parts (leading to double and triple-casting in some cases).  For most of the parts, actors are cast on separate bills (which have different two-hour rehearsal times), yet in a few, really problematic, instances, actors are utilized in really important parts in shows on the same bill *cough*REDBILL*cough*.  Two of my fellow directors are sharing a girl who has a lead in both of their shows; both of them and another director are sharing a girl who has a part in all three of their shows; and one of them has a show that requires 14 or 15 women, which gobbles up all the girls in my show.  All of this - and just a two-hour rehearsal time each day.

So, I initially wrote up the schedule as I'd like it, if I had my druthers...which it is quite apparent, I don't...and sent it to the one director I really conflict with.  As we talked, I felt like the best thing to do would be retool mine and see what she thought.  I have now effectively cut down my rehearsal time to an hour on most days - so she can have all of the actresses the second hour (my lead is one of the "women" in her show, and in my show is in every scene, so without her, there is no point in me having a rehearsal) -- and this is just a minor conflict.  So, that director is going to speak with the director SHE has the MAJOR conflict with, and they'll see if they can work something out, and then get back to me if I need to make any small changes.  All by tomorrow's deadline.

All of this hassle for nervous, first-time directors.  No wonder directors are crazy...

If a condemned person is about to be executed, can any of the following absolutely postpone his execution:

He is scheduled to be a witness for the prosecution in another case.

He is scheduled to be a witness for the defense in another case.

He is under indictment in another case.

Why do we'uns in the South not know about this? We LOVE Das Barbecu!

Hmm, not sure. I'm guessing that there would be a trial deposition scheduled rather than staying the execution and if he's dead, usually they don't care about additional charges, but one never knows.   I'm guessing

I wanted to be a composer at one time; I wrote a ton of songs and several one-act musicals in college.  I decided I was a better arranger and orchestrator than a composer. I still write occasionally, but I feel the skills suit me better in arranging another's music.

Top ten Films of 2006?  I haven't even seen 10 films from 2006 and those I have seen I can barely remember.  Watched two I got for Award Screening the other night...NOTES ON (FROM?) A SCANDAL with Judi Dench, Cate Blanchett, and Bill Nighy giving good, solid performances in a film I'm not sure quite works, but was at least interesting.  Also saw THANK YOU FOR SMOKING which was amusing...but I doubt if they'll be on my top ten list, if I ever get around to having one for this year.  Two films I will not be watching at all, that came as screeners, are the UNITED 93 and that Twin Towers movie by  Oliver Stone.  I saw the real drama unfold over a few unforgettable days, I don't need to see this stuff dramatized at this point.

I started to come down with something so my mom got me these Cold-Eeze things that made me feel better, but made everything taste funky. That was okay when I was just eating a sandwich that tasted like dirt, but as soon as I opened up a Cherry Coke that tasted like 7Up, I knew things had gone too far. I decided I would rather be sick and drinking Cherry Coke than healthy and drinking 7Up. I do have my priorities. So that was the end of the Cold-Eeze.

And that was that

LOL-I think Cold-Eeze makes everything taste like Cherry Coke.  Such a shame I don’t think that is a good thing.

Mr. Newman probably locked away the rights to that story the same way that he locked away forever the rights to THE FRONT RUNNER.  A book that could have made a big difference to all gay men back in the 70s; but, instead, was forever silenced.

Sorry JMK, I got off the subject.

Ah, forgot about United 93 - was that this year's film?  I wouldn't see the Oliver Stone movie on a bet, but I did think United 93 was an excellently done film, that never felt exploitive - more like a docu-drama, with no chest-pounding patriotism or disgusting patriotic music - just a what might have been happening on the plane scenario told in a very straightforward and compelling manner.  No real reason for the film to exist really, but it was the only movie I've seen this year that had me riveted to the screen.

Every time I watch one of these older movies - you know, not a classic or anything, but just a good old-fashioned movie movie, it just makes so clear how bankrupt today's cinema is.  Right now I'm finishing up The Young Philadelphians, a sprawling potboiler filled with terrific performances, a good script, good direction by Vincent Sherman, a lovely score by Ernest Gold - not brilliant, but compared to what I see today, a complete masterpiece.

And nice not to have to have puff-piece "documentaries" where the actors sit around and pontificate on their characters and all the research they did - I'm sure Paul Newman went to law school so he could play his character.

Oh, and did I forget to mention that 90% of The Black Dahlia was shot in Budapest?  And they BRAG about it.  It's not even convincing as the Universal backlot.

And like LA Confidential, there is a scene at the Pantages circa 1947.  There should be a box office in the center of the forecourt.  There isn't.  Easy CGI fix, for those who care.

Hi lovely, charming, and vivacious H/Ks and DRs ...

Films that I really enjoyed this year were very few.  But I did enjoy (and in no particular order)

The Prestige
Beyond The Hedge
Transamerica
The Devil Wears Prada
The History Boys

That last one was a very touching story, and I thought it was beautifully acted by a very talented bunch.  And thank god, not a single "talentless teen diva" or American Idol winner among them.

I really am puzzled these days by the wailing and "pseudo-improvisation" that passes for popular singing.  Ugh!

But what the hell..... I'm just an old crazy-lady that grows peaches!

Cillaliz - yes, on ION, sorry.  That recordio disc is one you made yourself at home, on a home recorder.  I have one in perfect working order, and I have a whole stack of those discs.

I ended up getting "Spin It Again" software that works with the cables that I already had to go from my turntable to my computer.  I did one of the acetates, it was a jam session in Hermie Harder's garage on November 4, 1945, when my dad was a senior in high school.  It cleaned up pretty well. I'm getting a kick out of doing this.

The main problem I have is that the discs weren't taken care of, they've been in a damp basement for about 25-30 years.  I'm amazed they are in as good of shape as they are.

I looked at the ION, but they didn't have any in stock, so I thought I'd just try the software first. So far so good.

DR Cason - I know exactly what you're going through.  Alas, it's just a occupational hazard in most Arts-related college programs.  When I was in my undergrad, I used to do a lot of accompanying for both instrumentalists and vocalists - and that was in addition to playing my own solo piano juries.  The Music department exams and juries always ended up using the full exam period in order to make sure that there were enough performance spaces and accompanists(!) to go around.  I still remember having to play a jury or two on the last day of exams, at the last hour allowed by the university.  And when I accompanied for the Music Theatre department at Catholic University, I tied a "record" of sorts: in two days times, I had played for 15 full juries (a minimum of 10 songs per student), and FOUR graduation recitals (50 minutes of music, usually with an intermission)!  *And I even remember having to rehearse at midnight with a student since that was the only time the hall was available.

But something hot and delish.  PIZZA!

Pizza is nutritious!  Cheese is dairy.  And, remember, the "good stuff" in tomatoes is actually enhanced after the tomatoes have been cooked.  -And if you drizzle the slice with some olive oil...  And accompany it with a glass of red wine...

I agree with you about "The History Boys".  And I have to give Alan Bennett credit for being able to tell a tale that could have been otherwise very hard and "uncomfortable" to tell due to the subject matter.  I even remembering feeling that way after seeing the play.  I walked out of the theatre feeling uplifted and inspired.

*And I would also have to recommend the soundtrack for "The History Boys" if only to hear Samuel Barnett's (with Richard Sisson on piano) full renditions of "L'Accordéoniste" and "Bewitched", as well as the choral arrangement of "Bye Bye Blackbird".  -And I even like Rufus Wainright's "Bewitched" too.  -Although, I'm guessing you could download the individual tracks from iTunes too.

Season 1 and 2 are from the new series

I have all of Peter Davison and a few adventures of Tom Baker on DVD...

On Video Tape I have Shada, ARc of Infinity and then taped eppies from when it was on the public telly here. I have several adventures of the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. I also have K-9 and Company on tape.

Many adventures of 1 and 2 are either missing or incomplete due to the BBC either discarding the episodes or reusing the tapes. It was a typical practice up until 1980s to do that. It was a practice also done in the US.
I do not have the Fox movie any longer after my vcr decided to make a snack out of it and it broke the tape!

I do have many of the novelizations of the scripts from all 7.
Most of what I had on tape is gone, lost during the move.

DVD:
First Doctor: An Unearthly Child, The Daleks, Edge of Distruction, and a condensed version of Marco Polo, in a collection called "The Beginnings."

Second Doctor: Tomb of the Cybermen.

Third Doctor: Spearhead from Space, Inferno, The Three Doctors.

Fourth Doctor: Pyramids of Mars, The Hand of Fear, The Robots of Death, the entire Key to Time season, City of Death.

Fifth Doctor: Earthshock, The Five Doctors.

Sixth Doctor: The Mark of the Rani, The Two Doctors

Seventh Doctor: The Curse of Fenric

I've all of the Target novelizations, somewhere in the basement.

I'm having to stick to the American DVD transfers, not having a region 2 player (and I'm not going to ask der B to get us one, no matter how much he begs).

The Eighth Doctor movie, aka The Enemy Within, is apparently tied up in legal glitches, which is why it's not out on DVD.

I have The Chase and Unearthly Child on tape. I wonder if the Marco Polo story is part of what the BBC is trying to put out.

Second Doctor: Tomb of the Cybermen.

I have WarGames one tape and an audio record of Highlanders
Quote
Third Doctor: Spearhead from Space, Inferno, The Three Doctors.
I have the first two that you have posted along with Day of the Daleks. I do not have THree Doctors but I do want to see that.

Quote
Fourth Doctor: Pyramids of Mars, The Hand of Fear, The Robots of Death, the entire Key to Time season, City of Death.
I have most of these on tape and now Logopolis, Keeper of Traken, and Pyramids of Mars on DVD

Quote
Fifth Doctor: Earthshock, The Five Doctors.
The Five Doctors I also have and that was a hoot.

Quote
Sixth Doctor: The Mark of the Rani, The Two Doctors
I have Mark of the Rani, Revelation of the Daleks, The Two Doctors and two episodes of the Timelord on Trial. I was not particularly fond of the actor in this role.

Quote
Seventh Doctor: The Curse of Fenric
I also have Dragonfire, Remembrance of the Daleks, Delta and the Bannerman and Silver Nemesis.

The Eighth Doctor movie, aka The Enemy Within, is apparently tied up in legal glitches, which is why it's not out on DVD.

And just how much does one have to invest in a show in order to have their name above the title?  And do all producers have to be "publicly" credited?

Good evening!

The party began well, the dinner was delicious, and then one of my friends got roaring drunk and spoiled the rest of the evening. (Boy friend dumped him a few days ago, and he's still grieving.)

But I got HARPER and INSIDE MAN and LIZA WITH A 'Z' and some others, so that was pleasing.

Questions I would like answered too FJL.  Not necessarily on a public board though.  Sort of question some of us are never likely to answered elsewhere I guess.

When I got home, I raced to the TV to finish watching THE SEARCHERS. That magnificent resolution on the Blu-ray disc just couldn't wait until tomorrow to be concluded.

Some of the special features were ported over from the standard DVD, and I peeped at them, too. But seeing clips from the film in its unremastered state was almost painful after seeing such glorious images in the previous two hours.

Well, I believe I have that "You've had a long day, you're tired, and you need some sleep" headache, so...

Goodnight.

And I don't even think it's because I'm OLD!

That didn't take long just six days ago you said:

I have no knowledge of how much people have to invest to become producers.  I was never thinking anything along those types of sums.

This was the early 1990's, earned income was coming in quite nicely, so i gambled and invested $5,000 in DAS BARBECU and $10,000 in SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE.  These made me a very very tiny insignificant investor, and the continuous checks for SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE - which still come, by the way - more than made up for the total loss on DAS BARBECU (which I had very much believed in, not so by the way).

The knowledge I gained about the financial workings of a major off-Bway show and a Broadway show, one flop and one mild hit - priceless.

Thanks FJL.  I appreciate the answer. It's such a foreign world to most of us here.
