Every time I watch one of these older movies - you know, not a classic or anything, but just a good old-fashioned movie movie, it just makes so clear how bankrupt today's cinema is.  Right now I'm finishing up The Young Philadelphians, a sprawling potboiler filled with terrific performances, a good script, good direction by Vincent Sherman, a lovely score by Ernest Gold - not brilliant, but compared to what I see today, a complete masterpiece.

And nice not to have to have puff-piece "documentaries" where the actors sit around and pontificate on their characters and all the research they did - I'm sure Paul Newman went to law school so he could play his character.

...*Although, the girl behind me didn't seem to like it that much... About fifteen minutes into the movie, she remarked to her friend - in not so hushed tones :-\ - "There's too much singing in this movie!"

8)
And you didn't turn around and tell her - in not so hushed tones, either - "That's why it's called a musical!" ???

And how much from the original run?

(No, I don't have everything that's out there...but I do scheme and dream.)

Season 1 and 2 are from the new series

I have all of Peter Davison and a few adventures of Tom Baker on DVD...

On Video Tape I have Shada, ARc of Infinity and then taped eppies from when it was on the public telly here. I have several adventures of the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. I also have K-9 and Company on tape.

Many adventures of 1 and 2 are either missing or incomplete due to the BBC either discarding the episodes or reusing the tapes. It was a typical practice up until 1980s to do that. It was a practice also done in the US.
I do not have the Fox movie any longer after my vcr decided to make a snack out of it and it broke the tape!

I do have many of the novelizations of the scripts from all 7.

SWW, I also have a Brit scifi series called "Survivors" written by Terry Nation. Rather disturbing at times and it is about a small group of people struggling to survive after a virus wipes out most of the earth's population.

Oh, and did I forget to mention that 90% of The Black Dahlia was shot in Budapest?  And they BRAG about it.  It's not even convincing as the Universal backlot.

And like LA Confidential, there is a scene at the Pantages circa 1947.  There should be a box office in the center of the forecourt.  There isn't.  Easy CGI fix, for those who care.

Hi lovely, charming, and vivacious H/Ks and DRs ...

Films that I really enjoyed this year were very few.  But I did enjoy (and in no particular order)

The Prestige
Beyond The Hedge
Transamerica
The Devil Wears Prada
The History Boys

That last one was a very touching story, and I thought it was beautifully acted by a very talented bunch.  And thank god, not a single "talentless teen diva" or American Idol winner among them.

I really am puzzled these days by the wailing and "pseudo-improvisation" that passes for popular singing.  Ugh!

But what the hell..... I'm just an old crazy-lady that grows peaches!

Cillaliz - yes, on ION, sorry.  That recordio disc is one you made yourself at home, on a home recorder.  I have one in perfect working order, and I have a whole stack of those discs.

I ended up getting "Spin It Again" software that works with the cables that I already had to go from my turntable to my computer.  I did one of the acetates, it was a jam session in Hermie Harder's garage on November 4, 1945, when my dad was a senior in high school.  It cleaned up pretty well. I'm getting a kick out of doing this.

The main problem I have is that the discs weren't taken care of, they've been in a damp basement for about 25-30 years.  I'm amazed they are in as good of shape as they are.

I looked at the ION, but they didn't have any in stock, so I thought I'd just try the software first. So far so good.
