Well, you've read the notes, the notes were nutty and had some clusters, and now it is time for you to post until the nutty cows come home.

Good morning, all! I am sleeping way too much these days.

Today I have to hit the Lincoln Center NYPL Music Collection looking for a song "Blarney Is Our Birthright." I've also got a couple of theatre scrapbooks to call up and see what they tell me about this number.

That's my day. I have some writing as well.

DR Laura, here's the review for WONDERLAND from Talkin Broadway:
http://www.talkinbroadway.com/world/Wonderland.html

The production photos say plenty. I find them as repellant as the subway posters that convinced me, as a huge Lewis Carroll fan, that I would hate this production. The last successful stage production of the Carroll books was the 1940s revival of the Eva Le Gallienne-Florida Friebus adaptation starring Bambi Lynn as Alice. A recording was made of a lot of the Richard Addinsell score. Florida Friebus' major claim to fame is playing one of the aunts of Dobie Gillis in the tv series.

I saw the last revival of the LeGallienne-Friebus version when it was revived at the ANTA around 1980. I had a good time and LeGallienne as the Red Queen was wonderful. She must have been around 80 years old and she actually flew in the production. And with a lot of grace, I might add.

I really would like to see a show while I'm in NY, but the sad joke is I will only be able to see one show and it's going to be Baby, It's You because I promised Barry I would.
Title: Re: NUT CLUSTERS
Post by: bk on April 18, 2011, 07:19:51 AM
Barry is great in the show - the show is the problem, and I've seen it and from all accounts it really hasn't changed at all.  But apparently baby boomers go and love that they're hearing oldies and get real excited.  I have never understood this phenomenon, especially when it's attached to poorly done shows.  Go play a record, it's a lot cheaper than seeing a B'way show.

There should be a decree passed by the League of Producers, Drama Critics, or some  law enforcement preventing him from writing for Broadway ever again. It should have been passed after JEKYLL & HYDE.

Picked up tapes, and my transfer guy happened to be nearby so he's already got them, which is great.  For one of the scores, it would appear that there will be more music than the CD had - don't know how much more but the previous CD had just about forty minutes of score and one song.  I'm not sure we'll be able to use the song or not, but we've got four reels of mixes that are about eighteen to twenty minutes each, so we could have either a few extra minutes or a LOT more.  I'm hoping for the latter, obviously.

Oy! Such a day. Like Sherlock Holmes, I am on the search for the missing song. A Victor Herbert song "Blarney Is Our Birthright," while not published in the vocal score for HEARTS OF ERIN, did appear in the Boston and Cleveland performances of the operetta before it was shut down for overhauling. It did not make the final version of the score for EILEEN, and I can find no record of the song being published as a single sheet with the HEARTS OF ERIN logo. To complicate issues further, the Ohio Light Opera recording of EILEEN includes the song and I have no idea where the hell they found it. It might be a fake song written by the OLO production team, though I doubt it.

There's no copy of the song at the NYPL, and I've been through the show programmes as well as the show music folders. I am not happy at the moment. I'm determined to find this number.

One of the funniest things that ever happened to me in my long career as a church music director was during an interview for a job I was later hired to do.  But about 3/4 of the way through the interview, one of the Board members turned to me and announced as if she were delivering news of absolutely paramount importance, "Well, we DO do a Maundy Thursday service, you know."  It was just so completely over the top I didn't know what to think, especially since it basically came out of the blue.  After that, she didn't say another word.  ;)

Great news.  I'm sure that the producers who are allocated seats, however, will fill them with people who've either been paid or been told to scream and whoop it up, so that we will not be without that nauseating business.

Do they?  There are certificates from hospitals & copies of birth certificates which appear like the real thing.  An official certificate must have the proper seal not it, not a copy of the seal.

I think BK might be happy to read this...No Tickets Will Be Available to General Public for 2011 Tony Awards (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/149995-No-Tickets-Will-Be-Available-to-General-Public-for-2011-Tony-Awards).

Great news.  I'm sure that the producers who are allocated seats, however, will fill them with people who've either been paid or been told to scream and whoop it up, so that we will not be without that nauseating business.

I'm sure that that's a great possibility.  Gotta have noise for the TV.

When DR Sandra was born, we sent in a check to pay for two copies of her birth certificate. They sent us four copies that didn't have the official seal and therefore weren't accepted anywhere. They were issued by the State.

When I applied for my passport back in 2002, I dug up my birth certificate. Lo and behold, it had my name listed as "Jose Simbulan, Jr." (or something like that). However, since my middle name is not the same as my father's middle name, I'm technically not a "Jr.". It's also listed differently on the certificate from the hospital.

Oy!

Do you know anyone at OLO you could contact? If not, I might.

Some states issue a short form that doesn't have parents' names on it.  That may no longer acceptable for a passport, I think you need a long form.  I don't know if that's the issue for Ginny.  Then there is a registration of birth which isn't the same as a birth certificate.  It's ironic that the regs about all this stuff have gotten stricter under Obama's administration.  You'd think he'd understand the birth certificate issue, ;)

We've been doing a lot of name corrections on birth certificates lately.   Many of them are just the wrong name for the mother or the child, when they don't understand the cultural use of the father's last name followed by the mother's last name in many Hispanic countries

DR elmore - I had Time-Warner's "Triple Play", but never bothered with the land-line, nor buying a land-line phone. If you don't feel like spending $15-80 for a new phone, you don't have to. *However, since Time-Warner's automated system first checks the land-line number on file, that would make it faster dealing with customer service.

*Of course, if I had just wanted the Cable TV and internet service without the phone service, it would have been $40 more each month than the "Triple Play" cost. ::)

I do love that no-knead bread recipe. And some of the variations that Mark Bittman came up with are quite nice too.

*I have a friend who makes the no-knead bread and he uses a Pyrex(!) bowl?!??!!  He shared that news with a bunch of us, and we all recoiled in horror - since the Pyrex can literally shatter. However, he assured us that he's using a classic piece of Pyrex - a.k.a. old - so it's actually a bit more sturdy than the more recent product. But still...

And you never knew this until applying for a passport, didn't you ever look at your S.S. card or school documents? ;D

Well, my SS card actually has my real name on it - which is the name I've always used - no Jr. involved.

As for my school documents, well... And I think I've mentioned this here before... Until I finally "rebelled" in fourth grade, my mom wanted me to sign my name as "J. Carlos Simbulan". -Her reasoning: "Well, all the other Filipinos are named "Jose"." -Well, all the others ones were named Carlos. ;) So...

My original passport - from when I was five - had my correct name on it, and when I got my new passport back from the Passport Agenct, it, too, had my correct name on it. I am not a "Jr."

Sherlock would like to carry his toys all around the house again.  I think he also misses the days when every toy in the house, at least those on the floor, belonged to him.  He attempted to make off with Yogi's toy.  Of course he waited until Yogi was outside to attempt this.  Craig had to bribe Sherlock with a treat to get him to drop it.

I would like to try a no-knead bread recipe.  Hint, hint. ;)

Here ya' go...

From the New York Times,

November 8, 2006
Recipe: No-Knead Bread

Adapted from Jim Lahey, Sullivan Street Bakery
Time: About 1½ hours plus 14 to 20 hours’ rising

3 cups all-purpose or bread flour, more for dusting
¼ teaspoon instant yeast
1¼ teaspoons salt
Cornmeal or wheat bran as needed.

1. In a large bowl combine flour, yeast and salt. Add 1 5/8 cups water, and stir until blended; dough will be shaggy and sticky. Cover bowl with plastic wrap. Let dough rest at least 12 hours, preferably about 18, at warm room temperature, about 70 degrees.

2. Dough is ready when its surface is dotted with bubbles. Lightly flour a work surface and place dough on it; sprinkle it with a little more flour and fold it over on itself once or twice. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let rest about 15 minutes.

3. Using just enough flour to keep dough from sticking to work surface or to your fingers, gently and quickly shape dough into a ball. Generously coat a cotton towel (not terry cloth) with flour, wheat bran or cornmeal; put dough seam side down on towel and dust with more flour, bran or cornmeal. Cover with another cotton towel and let rise for about 2 hours. When it is ready, dough will be more than double in size and will not readily spring back when poked with a finger.

4. At least a half-hour before dough is ready, heat oven to 450 degrees. Put a 6- to 8-quart heavy covered pot (cast iron, enamel, Pyrex or ceramic) in oven as it heats. When dough is ready, carefully remove pot from oven. Slide your hand under towel and turn dough over into pot, seam side up; it may look like a mess, but that is O.K. Shake pan once or twice if dough is unevenly distributed; it will straighten out as it bakes. Cover with lid and bake 30 minutes, then remove lid and bake another 15 to 30 minutes, until loaf is beautifully browned. Cool on a rack.

Yield: One 1½-pound loaf.

I heard his Svengali was actually OK. I think it was his first show. Of course, it needed work and the work was never done, but ...

JEKYLL AND HYDE was a piece of crap from the day it opened. Whatever Frank Wildhorn was doing before he came to Broadway he should return to.

Am I the only one who wonders why states even issue a birth certificate that won't be accepted?

Hospital Birth Certificates are not accepted either.

They never where, at least not since I needed to provide a certificate for the first time.

That is true for passports, but I was speaking of more general uses.  When I started with the State, we used to accept hospital birth certificates for children in a public assistance household.  I also got my social security card and my first passport with a wallet sized birth certificate card issued by Washington State.

My recipe was slightly different. I think he rewrote it when he wrote the book. Mine told you to wait 18 hours to let the dough ferment. Also, he had you bake it at 475 degrees. The handle on my cast-iron skillet was so hot, it burned through my silicone mitt and burned a finger.

And he said to use a linen towel, because sometimes there's lint with cotton towels.

Bittman slightly modified Jim Lahey's recipe for publication in the New York Times. And Jim Lahey did make some refinements to his process when he published the book.

I'm going to add things like oil-cured olives or herbs or whatever sounds good in a bread. I also made this one with all-purpose flour and whole wheat, which are different from bread flour. So. I will also try it with bread four, which is the only flour he recommends now with the recipe.

It looked official to me, but was probably in the category that DR Cillaliz described as "short form."  It did have a statement on it that it was to be accepted for all kinds of things, including securing a passport.  But, as DR TCB pointed out, that may have been true in 1950 but no longer after 9/11.

I think when we let our passports expire we had to submit our birth certificates again.  Maybe California only has the one form.  I looked and it seems short to me.  If I need an official form again I'll have to send for it.  I only have copies now.  I gave Bryan his extras & still have Craig's.  Every time we moved they needed one for the new school so I stocked up on them.

Interesting.  Keith's mother was named Mona on her birth certificate.  Her grandmother said that was a proper name & re-named her Mildred (Millie).  Her whole life every legal document stated her as Mildred.  When she went to get a passport, in her late 40's, it became complicated.  I guess way back when she didn't need her birth certificate to get her s.s. card.

Jekyll & Hyde, a cult favorite that ran almost four years, did not recoup its investment on Broadway, but it has made a fortune in productions around the world. Wildhorn's other shows have also been moneymakers away from Broadway, including a spate of musicals on romantic themes, such as Carmen; The Count of Monte Crisco; Rudolf: The Last Kiss; and Cyrano de Bergerac, which have been produced in Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Japan.

I've never seen a Panera with a drive-thru, either.  We are regulars at the 2 in Lima.

I've never seen one with a drive thru either.  DR GEORGE, was there a different business in the building before it became Panera

I liked Jeckyll and Hyde. Of course I didn't see it in New York, I saw it on tour in Des Moines.  Maybe that's the difference ;)

I did not like Jekyll and Hyde. Except the one song.

Back from a seder in New Jersey, where much matzoh and many jelly rings and macaroons were consumed.

The cats are acting strange tonight....maybe because it's raining.  I hadn't thought of that until just now.  You can hear it on the roof and as it goes down the downspouts.   When I last looked it was still dry down the basement.  I'll check again before I go to bed.  We're supposed to get another 1-2 inches of rain

Which has nothing to do with Jekyll and Hyde.

Re:  Laura Nyro.  I had a very sweet, but kind of sad, occurrence at a piano bar many years ago.  It was the week Laura died, and for some reason without even really thinking about it, I started playing "Captain St. Lucifer," hardly one of her best known songs, but a favorite of mine.  All of a sudden a woman across the room started weeping, and she came up to me and told me she not only recognized the tune, but that she had grown up with Laura and the two had been best friends at a summer camp they went to for several years running.  Amazing--all of this in Portland, Oregon.

I've been listening to Janis Ian Black is the New Folk CD.  I hadn't listened to her in years.

I'd like to post, but too tired to focus.

Work has been really emotional the last couple of weeks.   I really like it there.

It seems to be part of my identity.   I think that is a good thing.   :)

I think I am deeply in love.    My last one.   I don't even care how long it lasts.  It just feels good.

But it has made me very unfocused about everything else that I need to take care of in the evening and on the weekends.

I function much better when all the square pegs fit in the square holes.

Have a nice at home evening DR George.

Thanks, Jane...so far, so good.  I actually did stop at my sister's after I went to dinner at Panera.  She and her daughter had just gotten back from visiting our cousin in Oregon and they had gotten me some early birthday presents.  Some chocolates, some key lime pie flavored candies and Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog Book (http://www.amazon.com/Dr-Horribles-Sing-Along-Blog-Book/dp/1848568622/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1303193065&sr=8-1)...which includes sheet music!  I have the DVD and the CD, so this completes the Dr Horrible collection. :D

No...it's a new building.  And it has quite the seating area.  I have no idea what it's like during the day, but there is a lot of room.

I am finally back from seeing Little Me at the Musical Theatre Guild - starring our very own Jason Graae.  I'll let you do the math - show began at about 7:35.  Curtain came down at 11:00.  Subtract fifteen minutes for intermission and you'll come out with a total that should tell you everything that you need to know about the "production."

I guess I should write some notes.
