Next I would like to comment on Fry's
What fantastic customer service. I don't think BEST BUY or BRANDS MART would ever give the same customer service that BK has received.
Try and get the same salesperson twice at one of these stores.
Now is Fry's a chain or an independent store or a chain?
And I think it would be great to send an email to say how happy you have been with the customer service representative. Management does recognize the effort and they are usually rewarded with some kind of recognition.
PS If they are a chain they just might send you a coupon to purchase something else in the future.

Between now and next Thursday I have a boatload of work to do. Besides my regular work I was asked a few weeks ago to do a short presentation at a Managers Meeting next Thursday. That will go easily and quickly and I will shine. I have also been asked to be part of a larger presentation that same Thursday for a group of Foundation officials who are making a visit to the Center. I was told about the presentation yesterday and found out it will be an almost all day affair. I've done a version of this before so it won't be trouble putting it together but spending time from 11am-3pm presenting and then talking to Foundation officials and then running off to a different room by 3:30 to make the other presentation will make for a VERY long day. Plus we have a 2 hour rehearsal for the 11-3 presentation on Tuesday and even though I've done this before I still have to make adjustments because it's a different foundation with different grants and there will be different questions (probably) and different people from the Center will be attending. I'm exhausted already and the holiday weekend hasn't even started!

Since the radio stations here in Austin are not relly to my taste (I haven't found a good news station yet), I've been listening to CDs while I drive. Currently, I'm listening to MY FAVORITE YEAR, but I just finished THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X, and I must say, BL, that that is really a fun score. I'm still humming the title tune.
This weekend, aside from the final season of BOSTON LEGAL, I have several DVDs to watch.
THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE

NORTH WEST FRONTIER
THE KING AND FOUR QUEENS
DR. HORRIBLE'S SING-A-LONG BLOG
Also 2 movies I've never heard of:

I am on a Japanese kick. Just finished watching a 1967 Japanese spy film titled 3 SECONDS TO EXPLOSION. Now I am in the middle of the 1959 Toshiro Mifune film SAMURAI SAGA which is a samurai version of Cyrano de Bergerac. It is quite good.
Up next should be another Japanese spy film, DETECTIVE BUREAU 2-3: GO TO HELL BASTARDS (1963) if Netflix delivers it today as well as the brand new Bollywood sci-fi flick LOVE STORY 2050.

Today's work project is the Blu-ray of THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY. I had some time this morning, so I put in the disc and started watching the bonus featurettes. I got the first two watched, both making-of/tributes to the film and its director.
This is the 161-minute version of the movie rather than the bloated 180-minute movie version that I'll be watching today. Seeing the clips in the two featurettes brought back many fun memories of this wonderful movie.

I agree with bk about A CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER. Revisiting the movie on Blu-ray a couple of months ago, I enjoyed it far more than other viewings, and the Blu-ray was excellent in picture and sound. A first rate effort.
I liked Ford's first venture into playing Jack Ryan, too - PATRIOT GAMES, but when I saw it on the Universal-HD Channel, it didn't look any better than my upconverted DVD, so I haven't gotten that on Blu-ray yet.

Friday morning greetings! I'm back from my local Vera Bradley retailer, where I found several bargains both for myself and for gifts. Richard drove me out there last night at midnight for their "Midnight Madness" sale, which was, indeed, madness. I told him just to drive on by and I'd be there when they opened at 9am today. Apparently they had 100 women waiting to get in at midnight and in 2 hours sold $6000 in merchandise. At least they didn't sell the one thing I really, really wanted:

BK sorry about the torture.
Is there anyway that you can not work from home for the next few days? You'd think that they'd have to advise people how long the noise would be going on for. For people who work from home having their house shake from morning till night is not very comfortable!

Speaking of Sensurround, had a rather contentious chat with the developer of the McMansions next door this morning. He thinks he can bully me. He quickly found out I'm not exactly a shrinking violet. :)
-
The fact that I know he's already being sued for something like $70 million (yes, you read that right), gives me a certain, shall we say, confidence in not being bullied. ;)

Two telling moments department: At one point, he sounded very tired and sighed and said, "Times are tough." Like that's my problem. And then later he said, "I'll be glad to be out of here." That one made me LOL.

Does anyone know how I can find which government agency supervises bank regulations and outrageous practices. I really want to fight the $264 Sovereign Bank took from me.
Isn't it the SEC?
-
What can you say to these people? They don't give a crap. They're doing a job they're paid to do - if doesn't matter to them if the neighbors' houses are being shaken from morning till night - oh, they might care, say, if someone were doing the same thing next to THEIR house and THEY had to endure - then they might just care. In other news, I decided I was being completely stupid about the TV - I LOVE the TV so I've cancelled the delivery of the would-be replacement.

You will get used to the TVs lights, BK...just don't go towards them.

I am taking a break from watching last night's episode of SOUTHLAND. I just love this show, even though it does show a side of Los Angeles that I would prefer not to know about.

Deportations carried out in the middle of immigration cases
Agents have arrested people at Immigration Court in downtown L.A. and expelled them. Authorities say they're reinstating previous orders. Lawyers say the legal process is being flouted.
By Anna Gorman
May 22, 2009
Fernando Arteaga appeared last week in Immigration Court as part of a lengthy battle to stay in the United States. But just before the hearing began, immigration officers removed him from the courtroom, arrested him and took him into custody.
Several hours later, agents deported him to Mexico -- even though his court case was still underway.
Arteaga, 44, is among a small number of immigrants picked up in recent weeks by immigration agents at the downtown Los Angeles courthouse. All of the people arrested there had been previously deported and all had criminal records, said Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Virginia Kice.
Immigration agents are reinstating previous orders of deportation, Kice said, which "enables the nation's immigration judges to focus on the cases of those aliens who have not had their day in court."
"People arrested for being in the United States illegally have access to due process," she said. "However, those who exercise their rights, then willfully ignore the immigration judge's decision or willfully reenter the United States after being previously removed . . . must understand there are consequences for those actions."
The arrests have angered immigration attorneys, who argue that once an immigrant is in court, the judge should make the final decision -- not the immigration agency.
Hmmm...I bet if ICE swooped in and snatched one of Cillaliz's clients mid-proceedings she would really become grumpy!

Then I spent almost the entire afternoon with THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY. Even though the liner notes said this was the 161 minute version, they LIED. It was the 179 minute (endless) version of the movie. Don't get me wrong: it's an iconic film and vastly enjoyable from scene to scene from beginning to end, but 3 hours for this story is just way too long.
The Blu-ray makes it look as good as it probably can look, but it's definitely not a top tier transfer. The repurposed DTS-HD MA 5.1 track also has its ups and downs.
-
I had time to sample the two commentaries. Richard Shickel's is a snooze. Christopher Frayling's is more lively in conversational tone and information, but he also does too much describing of what we're seeing on the screen.
The two documentaries I watched this morning are much better analyses of the film and aren't the least bit droning.

Are the added 18 minutes just a few scene additions, or are they tidbits scattered throughout?

I'll still have a fair amount of stuff to work on with this disc once I go back downstairs. I also got a couple more review items in the mail today. After that lull I had a couple of weeks ago, I will be very busy for at least the next two weeks (and I know I have three more Blu-ray review copies on the way that will arrive next week).

Is there anyway that you can not work from home for the next few days? You'd think that they'd have to advise people how long the noise would be going on for. For people who work from home having their house shake from morning till night is not very comfortable!
bk - If your house really is shaking that much, you may want to call some local authority to make sure that all precautions are being taken by the people doing the work. Just sayin'...

Now, THIS (http://www.fancast.com/blogs/deep-soap/deep-soap-quitters-never-win/?cmpid=FCST_beta) is real interesting...especially for fans of "The Young & the Restless."
Career Suicide
It’s the shocking daytime scandal du jour. Chris Engen (Adam) has quit The Young & The Restless because he didn’t want to play a gay kissing scene. Y&R has already replaced him with Michael Muhney, known for his role as Sheriff Lamb on Veronica Mars. According to my sources, Engen was unhappy with more than the prospect of his character’s potential homosexuality. He also hated that Adam was faking blindness and gaslighting Ashley. But it was the kissing scene with Rafe that led to him parting ways with the show.
My gut reaction: Engen is unprofessional for quitting the show mid-contract, whatever his reasons were. Actors hate their storylines all the time. That doesn’t stop them from doing their jobs. Moreover, if he thought that a gay kissing scene would have a negative impact on his career, he has seriously misjudged the current state of American culture. Brokeback Mountain enhanced Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal’s reputations without damaging their status as sex symbols. In daytime, playing a gay storyline has become a surefire way to generate a huge, passionate fanbase and garner mainstream press attention. I am sure that Van Hansis, Jake Silberman, Eden Reigel, Jessica Leccia and Crystal Chapell are thankful that their characters were given gay storylines. Egan might have gotten even more attention since Y&R is such a popular show. It’s possible that Adam, who is willing to inject toxic chemicals into his eyeballs to fake blindness, may only be pretending to be interested in his lawyer Rafe. Or he could turn out to be bisexual, attracted to both Heather and Rafe. The openly gay actor Thom Bierdz, who has just rejoined the show in the role of Phillip, has hinted that his character may be gay. This would be a huge storyline that would have offered Engen a chance to shine. Instead, Muhney will get the opportunity.

I'm back from various and sundried errands and whatnot plus luncheon at Casa Vega. They're still going strong next door but I do believe they'll have to stop at four or they'll go into overtime. I had to be away today - the house was literally shaking and rattling and if I stayed I would have gone next door and started screaming at these creeps. Of course, who I really want to scream at are the owners - and their day WILL come, oh, yes, their day WILL come.
-
I went to Fry's and undid what I'd done last night - and it was the totally right decision - the color, brightness, and sharpness on the LEDs, even with the little flashlighting problem (which I probably would never have noticed had I not read about it on that forum - and those boys, while knowledgeable, I'm sure, are so ridiculously anal AND in the scheme of things what do they really know? I read about the settings they use on my TV and I've played with them and it looks TERRIBLE. If that's what they think color and film look like, then they'll LOVE any Warners transfer, because what they're doing is rendering a gorgeous picture that's almost perfect coming right out of the box (the ONLY settings I touched were that auto motion and judder stuff - that they were right about) and making it a brown/yellow dim, muddy mess.
-
I will say that I was a bit surprised at how good Fry's prices are on Blu-Ray discs - I got Bullitt for twelve bucks, and Force Ten From Navarone for sixteen bucks.
-
The Casa Vega lunch was, as always, spectacularly tasty - one beef taco, one cheese enchiladas, and a few chips. Yummilicious.

Will we never get to page six?

der Brucer
I think several scenes (maybe three) were added back in. When I get to the deleted scenes, I'll see if any of them are now in the movie I watched this afternoon.
I have the extend cut on DVD
These are the extended scenes
1) After being betrayed by Blondie, surviving the desert on his way to civilization and assembling a hybrid revolver from parts of various original makes, Tuco meets with members of his gang in a distant cave, where he conspires with them to hunt and kill Blondie.
2) During his search for Bill Carson, Angel Eyes stumbles upon an embattled Confederate outpost after a massive artillery bombardment. Once there, after witnessing the wretched conditions of the survivors, he bribes a Confederate NCO for clues about Bill Carson.
3) The sequence with Tuco and Blondie crossing the desert has been extended: Tuco mentally tortures a severely dehydrated Blondie by eating and drinking in front of him.
4) Tuco, transporting a dehydrated Blondie, finds a Confederate camp whose occupants tell him that Brother Ramirez's monastery is nearby.
5) Angel Eyes appears at a Union camp, where his affiliation with the Union Army and his rank is explained.
6) Tuco and Blondie discuss their plans when departing in a wagon from Brother Ramirez's monastery.
7) A scene where Blondie and Angel Eyes are resting by a creek. A man appears and Blondie shoots him. Angel Eyes asks the rest of his men to come out (all are hidden as well). When the five men come out, Blondie counts them (including Angel Eyes), and concludes that six is the perfect number. Angel Eyes asks him why, mentioning that he'd heard that three was the perfect number. Blondie responds that six is the perfect number, because he has six bullets.
8 ) The sequence with Tuco, Blondie and the Union Captain has been extended: the Captain asks the pair questions about their pasts, which they are reluctant to answer.
There was also a long more brutal scene of Tuco being beaten up, but the quality of the negative was poor.
Eastwood and Wallach went back into the studio and dubbed their dialogue into English, Since the scenes were never in the original US version, they didn't dubbed the those scenes.

What can you say to these people? They don't give a crap. They're doing a job they're paid to do - if doesn't matter to them if the neighbors' houses are being shaken from morning till night - oh, they might care, say, if someone were doing the same thing next to THEIR house and THEY had to endure - then they might just care.
Does your neighborhood have any kind of homeowner's association that governs what can and can't be done for those who live there? If you do, it might be able to negotiate "work hours" with them that give some consideration to your needs.

Good Evening!
When I headed out earlier, I really wasn't sure what I wanted to do, or where exactly I wanted to go, nor what I wanted to eat. Well, I started walking over to Broadway...
I bought two tamales (one pork, one chicken - "spicy") from Maria's cart on the corner of Broadway and 145th, then hopped on the 1 train downtown. -And proceeded to consume said tamales during the train ride down to 72nd.
At 72nd, I started walking back uptown. Well, I started walking toward the Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream Truck. :)
Then I just kept walking uptown until I was back home. It was - and still is - a beautiful night out there. Along the way, I saw many a familiar face; noticed a few closed storefronts, as well as some new ones. And I smiled. A lot.
