Jennifer, you have cracked the 1000 mark! It will be a while before I get there what with that Michael Shayne character popping up every so often to keep me from surpassing his posting numbers. I'm posting as fast as I can to keep ahead of TD. I'm aging quickly since I got back just keeping up with posts ;)
It occurred to me that the bottomless well of knowledge that is HHW might be able to help my aging and decrepit memory with something. I grew up for a few years in Bellevue (the city, not the insane asylum--well, the city anyway) and I have been racking my brain (no easy task) to remember the name of the one and only movie theater that was there in the late 60s and early 70s. I think it was a guy's name, John something. Does anyone possibly know this? TIA.
JMK - Would it have been the John Danz theater?
How did HHW know I call my member Junior? Sorry, couldn't resist.Just wait until the comment he makes at 101! :o ::) ;D
Speaking of the Teddy Bears Picnic, Ben, my friend Roger also once sent me a compliation of about 25 different versions of the song Teddy Bears Picnic, having remembered fondly an old 78 of mine that used to get lots of play in our college days.
DR Jee/Jed: Only 28 to go. Have you caught up with George yet?
From tday's Liz Smith column:
"In our rave on "Beauty and the Beast," we mistakenly referred to composer Alan Menken as having passed away. It was "B&B" lyricst Howard Ashman who died. Menken is alive, well and working hard on various Disney projects. Sincere regrets to all.
Good morning. Two months ago today I arrived back in LA. Something fabulous is going to happen today. I feel it in me bones.
And if anyone asks who Charles Nelson Reilley is don't!!!!!!
He was on Broadway in the original casts of Hello, Dolly! and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and directed his pal Julie Harris in mnay of her recent plays on Broadway and on tour.
On Television he was a regular on The Golddiggers and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir and perhaps most famously as a regualr panelist on Match Game revival.
Now if you haven't heard on any of these shows go do an internet search and look them up!!!!
How did HHW know I call my member Junior? Sorry, couldn't resist.
Hey DR Ann: do you have any more pictures from Hawaii? It is very cold here and I like to see the beaches and pretend it's warm.I do indeed, and I shall be posting more of them soon. :D
DRs Jennifer and Maya: I'm glad you liked my account of the gathering! I like how Jenn called it a soap. :)
Btw, Jenn, I didn't watch The Apprentice yet, but my mom recorded it for me!
WEL--I'm a LaChiusa gal, all the way! I haven't heard all of the Lippa, but I just love the jaggedness and savagery of the LaChiusa version. The music is sooo good. How would you compare the two?
I ate a subway grilled chicken sandwich today instead of a plain veggie one. It was good and far more filling...
George, you're on-line now with 494 posts. Just go for it. I won't mind if you make 7 vanity posts :-)
Is a footlong just the regular 12 inch sub? And does everybody call it that?
Have grilled chicken! And then come back here and rub it in :)
I don't mind either as long as they are somewhat entertaining :)
(you guys are making me hungry)
I also want to buy a paper shredder today - and get a good start on my "sort and purge" project over the next few weeks. Like other DRs have stated, I'm not a collector, I just don't throw anything away... And I know there are some things that I should throw out and/or don't need at all. -I don't think a grocery store receipt for two bottles of salad dressing has any tax and/or sentimental attachment. Do you?Of course, if you are a true Alton Brown multi-tasker, you can use the paper shredder to shred lettuce, with which the salad dressing will go very well indeed!
This hair thing seems like a lot of work though. Maybe I should just shave it all. Isn't lesbian-chic in now? ;)Well, if you're going to be that way about it, go for a buzz cut like MBarnum and I wear. The shaved look doesn't work unless you've got the muscles and a moustache, and you're too young for a moustache.
DR WEL: Okay in your opinion do you think a musical (such as Assassins in this case) which has played off broadway and is 10+ years old should be considered a new musical? And if so, why? I get that it has never played on Broadway. But it's not a new piece and I cannot even imagine it up against Avenue Q and Wicked.
Today, I'm going to Subway for lunch, too! I have two filled stamp cards so I can get a footlong (don't go there) sandwich for free! ;D I haven't decided exactly what I'll get...but I know that it'll be good!Footlong Meatball?
Dan in Toronto and Panni - of couse, I must receive ten percent of the winnings as the AGENT.
Have any of you ever seen something on ebay that you think will be easy for you to find again. And then you cannot for the life of you find it again. :(
Btw, are any of the other girly girls here on HHW as obsessed with italian charms as I am?
Jennifer, I know you didn't ask my opinion, but when has that ever stopped any of us? Personally, I dislike the fact that the Tony committee is always changing or redefining their rules to accomadate a certain show or performer. I believe Assassins, by definition, should be considered a new musical. How can you justify labeling a show a revival when it has never previously played a Broadway house?
I am curious, Jennifer, how familiar you are with the show Assassins? Have you seen the show produced? Are you familiar with the score? You say that you can't imagine it up against Wicked or Avenue Q. Why not?
I am ALWAYS "watching" items. I have lost things so many times before that option was created. Acutually, I either lost track of or bid on way too many things. That got to be real expensive.
Okay, now I'm really hungry. I'm waiting for a co-worker to get out of a meeting then we'll go to Subway. But I'm hungry NOW!!!!! You'd think that a HHW God could have lunch whenever he/she wanted, but NO. I have to wait. GGRRRR!
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]Congratulations to our newest God, George![/move]
Congratulations on your acension George. Welcome to the top clouds.
Hey, TD, I can't do it from work, but why don't you let the folks over at the SS board know about our brand spanking new The DVD Place. For those who've been participating in threads, all your answers have been answered.I'm on my way to the Street now, where I'm argueing the merits of SINGIN' IN THE RAIN opposed to MOULIN ROUGE.
Congratulations, God!
Jennifer, if that were the case, then should shows that opened off-Broadway and then later moved to Broadway, be ineligible for Tony consideration except as a Revival? Should Rent have been ineligible for the Tony, because it started life Off-Broadway, and also won the Obie?
Wow, td, I never realized so many people wanted to have their picture taken with Janet!
You know what they say, "when you've got it, flaunt it."
Emily I find long hair much easier than short. There are more things you can do with it, and on a bad hair day just tie it into a pony tail.
"Assassins" would be one of the great theatrical experiences of my 40 years of theatre going. (but then I didn't get to see TCB in "Dolly")
all I have to do is brush it and go. :)
Yes, but who is the hot guy in the Betty Buckley photo?
Dan-in-TO - I'm excited. And if we win, let's swear right now that we won't say, "This won't change my life. I'll just help my brother pay off his trailer and buy a new stove. The rest goes into a high interest bond." NO! If we win, we won't be humble and self-effacing. We'll say, "We deserve this! And we're spending it!"
DR and God George - The Russians may have used a pencil, but did those practical Comrades get a brilliant episode of Seinfeld out of it? They did not. And I have an astronaut pen (well, HAD one until I lost it - or it was stolen by some jealous Putin-lover) and it was the best, a pen among pens. Worth every penny of the 12 million.
I too, can WAIIIIT until "Assassins" as I have never been lucky enough to see it. I have a terrible crush on one of the cast members, not to memtion being a Sondheim devote.
I know the connection!!!! BK produced the "FORUM IN JAZZ" Cd.
That reminds me, BK, your "PASSIOIN JAZZ" CD is just about the best thing ever. I dareto say that I enjoy it as much as the cast album of it. I've bought it for several jazz folks and they love it!
I agree with you, DR TCB, about ASSASSINS being considered a new musical. It played two months at the limited seating-subscription selling Playwrights Horizon, never had an open ended run on OR off Broadway, so I think it definitely should be considered a new Broadway musical.
The Tonys are a Broadway award. It shouldn't matter how many other places a show has playedaround the country or around the world. When a musical plays New York for the first time in a venue where the run is open and tickets are available to the general public, that's its debut. Any other New York production could then be considered a revival, but this production never was offered to the public at large nor ran long enough to transfer to a theater where it could have had an open ended run. Therefore, I think it should be considered a new musical to Broadway and have its score considered as a new score.
However, I'm betting now that it won't be, and the score won't be eligible for Best Score either.
DR td - Is that Jim Stanek? -If so, he did have very nice legs in the FORUM revival...
Oh, could the BK connection be the fact that the OCR of FORUM was once issued on a BK-produced label?
Great pictures, td!
From the files of Evil Twin, photographer at large:
That is indeed Jim Stanek, whom I knew from his days at Carnegie-Mellon.
And, the BK connection is far more personal than that, if you catch my drift.
How does Jessica's mother fit into the Six Degrees?Well, I guess she was kind of a bonus - or hidden - degree. ;)
Another photo guessing game.
Who is this? ;D
Woops! Had to go back and crop the signature!
That is indeed Jim Stanek, whom I knew from his days at Carnegie-Mellon.
And, the BK connection is far more personal than that, if you catch my drift.
No it's not Martin Mull OR td, or even a man!
That is indeed Jim Stanek, whom I knew from his days at Carnegie-Mellon.

Then he opened his arms to give me a hug and went on his way. I turned around to all of my friends giggling and saying, "AWW!" It was...interesting. They always find a way to tease me!
Jennifer I gather you have an Italian charm bracelet. So which charms have you collected?
DR Jed/Jee/Jugs: The Cd of Rent is a lot easier to cope with than the stage performance. Maybe it's just not a Washington thing! TCB agrees.
That is indeed Jim Stanek, whom I knew from his days at Carnegie-Mellon.
And, the BK connection is far more personal than that, if you catch my drift.
Ann, you know me and worthless knowledge! :D
But this time it was with a bit of internet assistance...
I'm afraid I must out myself as someone who rather enjoys Rent. I'm sorry to betray the Washington clan :) I'll fully admit to it's flaws, and that there are many many superior shows, but for some reason it grew on me a few summers ago.
Okay, so DR Jed outed me first :D
Another photo guessing game.
Who is this? ;D
Woops! Had to go back and crop the signature!
Ah! DR TCB is correct. ;D
It is movie star Dolores Hart who is now a Mother Superior at a Convent in Connecticut. 8)
I loved all those new TD pictures.
Not a surprise that TCB should know all about habits.
They ARE NOT PICTURES OF TD ! ! ! My gams were never that good!
Well, bye bye, kids. Off to do the murder mystery.
DR Robin_Anderson - I didn't know SUMMER PLACE was available on CD!
Horseracing, anyone? Giddiyap!
No, but there are lots of pictures of Martin Mull.
TD which one is you. The red dress or the flora print?
I didn't think men were allowed to do NUNSENSE! ;D
Obviously, you weren't in Minneapolis to see the all-male version, re-titled Nunsense a-MEN!
I'd call you a bitch, but, this is a family site. OOPS! I did it again!
If I am a bitch you are a bitchess! ;D
TD was asking for a picture of my new bed. Here it is.
TD was asking for a picture of my new bed. Here it is.
What about a bitchette?
How's about a bidet?
Thank goodness I'm not one of your strange bedfellows!!!
(oh! a Rock Hudson reference! in more ways than one. . .)
In my DVD player:
Season 4 of Babylon 5
The Image 2 disc release of The Phantom of the Opera the 1925 and 1929 versions with extras including dialogue sequences from the 1930 version.
the 35th anniversary reunion tribute at the Radio and Television Museum of Broadcasting for Dark Shadows.
I just got it a few weeks ago at Club Price of all places (they had a booth). There I only got a J, a pink heart, and a diamond and purple birth type stones. But last week some women told me about getting charms on ebay. I did buy two there that I haven't received. My aunt who got a charm watch for X-mas is excited because she won a 50 charm lot on ebay.I cannot wait to see that (even though they will not all be for me).
This is the real picture of my new bed.
Jane - I didn't mention the other day how cute that photo of the Hungarian pony and cat was. Being Hungarian beasts, they were probably doing something that only looked cute but was criminal in intent. Nevertheless, the pic was sweet.
Well, DRs, BK did indeed figure out the personal connection to the previously posted photos. . .
And...??? So...???
With all that Garland information there will be enough Figs here for a year's supply of fig jam (whoops! jelly).
Maybe I should be watching BABYLON 5 since my neighbor directed a number of the episodes. Well almost neighbor. First she has to build a house.
You are so much fun. Will your little cottage have a guest room for me?
Are we on a dinner break?

Oh, I got my Adventures of Captain Marvel DVD in the mail today. VERY exciting. I shall watch some of it this very evening. And waiting for me tomorrow will be Japanese DVD releases of Two for the Road and How to Steal a Million and one other movie I can't remember.
You mean you don't have one? Gasp! Horrors!
I haven't really played with it today. To busy doing some other kind of reading/writing.
I promise to work on it tomorrow.
Jennifer, if you are also going to eliminate shows that have toured all over the country, how are going to decide between tours and shows that open out of town? Hairspary originally opened in Seattle at the 5th Avenue. Should it have been eliminated from Tony consideration? What about Light In The Piazza? Should it be considered a revival if and when it makes it to Broadway?
Well, I thought that I was going to have a nice evening home with my DVD and VCR players, but I forgot (but thankfully remembered in time) that I am supposed to usher tonight (in about 35 minutes, actually) for a touring production of "Le Nozze de Figaro" (the opera). :-\ Anyway, I have to go home and get my white shirt and dark socks so that I'll be appropriately dressed. I don't know how long the show runs, but I'll check in after it's over...probably very late.
:o
I guess I should think before I post.
DR Jose: Which rooms did Hildy and Kia do? I can't believe that so many hate Hildy. She is one of my favorites. Yes the records and a few others have been horrid. But I usually love her stuff. When she doesn't go crazy she can do such beautiful stuff.
Btw, was the episode you just watched the one that played last sunday (where kia used a horrid neon yellow paint & hildy did a spectacular purple and blue kitchen).
That kitchen was so elegant. The man was so adamant about the pink/purple. But I had a feeling Hildy new the paint would dry dark. He was happy at the end and so was I!
DR Jose: I had been on a health binge last year. But when I went off it for some reason I didn't gain any weight back. I think it was because I was biking a lot.
But at the beginning of Dec I had no choice. You mention wanting to fit into pants. Well my jeans wouldn't do up. They had fit perfectly in September. So I was forced to take action. Or buy new clothes.
I haven't weighed myself this week. I don't think I"m back at what I was at. Although I feel like I should be. Does that make sense?
The Significant Other and myself went out for dinner at Tucci Benucch, an Italian restaurant at (of all places) the Mall of America, and stayed in to watch the deeveedee of THE MASK OF ZORRO. The dinner was delicious, pesto chicken linguine; the movie was fabuluous, too...even if the print 20th Century Fox used wasn't exactly top-notch. But, the movie is so darned fun, I cut it a lotta slack. Really, really nice Alfred Newman score on this one. The movie, not our dinner. That had music provided by Bobby Darin, Keely Smith and Frank Sinatra. Not too shabby an evening, overall.
I'm with Dear Reader SWoodyWhite. If Assassins qualifies as a new musical this year, then La Boheme should have qualified as a "new" musical last year. I can just hear the presenter for Best Musical saying: "Accepting for Giacomo Puccini is..."
Quick poll.Der Brucer and I walked out on two, back to back!
What was the worst musical you ever sat through or walked out on?
Hey, Borodin won as Best Composer for KISMET and T.S. Elliott won two Tonys for score and book for CATS, both gentlemen having long since left this earth when they won their coveted awards.
...It just seems funny to me that the Tony committee sometimes believes that if it didn't happen on Broadway it didn't happen.Interesting, because the only Tony award I take seriously these days is the special award for Regional Theater!
To be pedantic, Kimlet was Tony Walton's name for me - it's what he called friends - Jane Krakowski was Kraklet. It became our designation for dear readers of this site, they were either Hainsies, after Guy Haines, or Kimlets, after me, or both, after both.
. . .and the man that coined the moniker Kimlet, is the personal tie BK has to my/Evil Twin's photos on the set of A FUNNY THING. . .FORUM.
And DR Tomovoz, I should think that at your age (which is after all, roughly mine) YOU HAVE BEEN KISSED BACKWARDS. . .and if you haven't, get over here, and I'll show you how's it's done. ;)
Oh me, oh my!
I'm less than 40 posts away from HHW God-status!!
Hmm... and it's only 1:33am EST...
I just discovered something wierd. Willy Russell's Blood Brothers has had no less than eleven cast recordings.
. . . and poor li'l me, I think I only have eight of those recordings. . .All gifts by well-meaning but uninformed relatives, I hope. ;D
DR TCB here is the photo with the signature! ;D
All gifts by well-meaning but uninformed relatives, I hope. ;D
What a lovely treasure.
I think it's becoming obvious during our posting frenzies that one simply cannot leave their homes.
Here is the complete Street Smart publicity photo. I remember eating a lot of ice cream that day
Hey, when I graduate from full member to senior member status, does that mean I get flabby?
Quote from: S. Woody White on Today at 10:43:41pmQuoteHey, when I graduate from full member to senior member status, does that mean I get flabby?
-Oh the possibilities....
Let's see...
-No, you don't get flabby, but your voice gets lower.
-Flabby? Oh, but not where you're thinking.
-No, you don't get flabby, you just start growing hair..
OK, I better stop before I cross over the line... if I haven't already... :-X
I've picked out a cute little cottage in Studio City just south of Ventura. For Sale by Owner. Should be a steal at $800,000. That will be perhaps the first purchase with my winnings. Then there's the computer and TV we promised Cousin TCB...
DR Jason - Well, on my walk tomorrow - between all my bundling and sorting - I will stop by For the Love of Chocolate and see what they have on the shelves. Hopefully, they will have some Galaxy bars in stock. If not, I'll pick you up a "surprise" assortment of English goodies.
Well, actually, I'm one of the ones who ACTUALLY likes BLOOD BROTHERS; but, when seeing a bad production, it is the pits. . .I blame Willy Russell.
So, do we blame superstition for what came to pass, or what the English have come to call class? ? ?
Same theory could be applied to a lot of Greek tragedies. . .
SWoody - Yes, I heard when I saw The Light in the Piazza in Seattle that it would be the same cast (or at least as much as possible) in Chicago. As I said when I saw it in June, I don't see a whole lot of financial success for the show, but I do hope it gets a recording at some point. "Clara's Tirade" is one of the best ingenue tour de force pieces I've heard.
I'd heard about The Light in the Piazza in Seattle but I never got a chance to see it. I love Victoria Clark and would have loved to see her live!
Panni,
06 15 19 23 34 40 47 16
Those are the seven winning numbers. We had six lines x seven = 42 numbers; we matched exactly two. Now what are the odds of that happening? And I was so looking forward to adopting TCB.
It was fun. Hope you didn't max out the credit card.
DR Maya - Yes, Mr. Guettel is very easy to look at... and keep looking at. :o
We have an original Captain Marvel movie poster.
OHH!!! DR George! You were post #500!
-Drats, foiled again.... ;)
Question: Does anybody here who SAW the original broadway cast hate rent? I just cannot imagine it. The show with a regular cast is good. But the OBC was literally so much better. I was practically in tears. And my favorite was the sexy Jesse L. Martin.
Yes, Jennifer, I saw the Original Cast, and the show still sucked!
Perhaps Dear Reader Laura is shy about posting such things, but, unfortunately, she had to put one of her cats, who was quite ill, to sleep today. Let's send good thoughts her way.

If there's a wrong way to do something, I'm the one who will find it.
Well, it’s after midnight here and my coach had turned into a pumpkin. That means I have to walk home–no bus service this late at night.
Ya'll have a good one!
I wanted to try that turning a pumpkin into a coach bit, until I found out they didn't mean my high school basketball coachHmmm....sounds like someone's still rankled from having to be the basketball....
I had to say I was wrong today regarding the XX and OO's. It seems I've been wrong all of my life. I was being kissed when I thought I was hugged and hugged when I thought I was kissed.
Having listened to Avenue Q quite a bit this week, I'm having to restrain myself from commenting on Jose's hand problems from computer work.
Having listened to Avenue Q quite a bit this week, I'm having to restrain myself from commenting on Jose's hand problems from computer work.
My, my, my... How very TCB-like of you!
Perhaps DR Jose will refrain from whatever he is doing and give you some stimulation to achieve the goal Jed.
Has anyone else made the long journey through the archives to read the posts of the first few months? I keep meaning to continue the quest to find my first post. I think it may have been early March before I "found the way".
I also thought the original cast of Miss Saigon, at least Jonathan Pryce and Lea Solanga really had it. The strength of their performances really held together what was, imho, an overblown production of a really small story. Yes, the historical setting was/important, but it tended to overshadow the personal relationship between The Engineer, Kim and John. -And the helicopter wasn't really that big a deal.
Well.. I guess I have been quite the Posting Paulie today (as opposed to a Chatty Cathy)...
Guess I'm making up for my most likely errant and truantness next week when I go to NY. OH, and speaking of NYC....
Our evenings are taken care of with shows, but the days are still more or less up in the air. Any NYers - or been-to-NYers - have any suggestions for what to do next week? Any "can't miss" exhibits at any of the museums? Is there a new store or boutique worth checking out just for the curiosity factor? Any great little restaurant or food stand to try out? I'm doing some reading up now, but any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I'm not going to argue about the helicopter (like the score, never saw the show), but if you want to talk about over-hyped effects, I have never seen the chandelier in Phantom of the Opera when it didn't seem like a joke. I really love the show, but that is the big effect that everyone always talks about???
I started Page 19!!!
Take that, DR George!!!
:p
As are you, Dear TCB!
How did your murder mystery go tonight?
I'm still waiting to hear from DR Evil Twin as to how her performance went. . .
And the night????
