Well, you've read the notes, the notes smelled sweeter than then dead rodent, and now it is time for you to post until the living cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: AMARANTH!
-
And now, the unvarnished version of the event. Forget that it was too many speeches, all clapping themselves on the back in a way I just don't care for. Just make a snappy evening, not two hours of speeches.
When they came to me, they had no idea about the entertainment for the show. They had some ideas that were silly and unfocused and meaningless. It was I who suggested doing a tribute to Goldsmith - they didn't even know he'd been an alumni, and frankly they didn't even know who he was until I finally began listing the litany of films he scored. So, they got the Young Musician's Foundation - forty-five players. I went to Charles Fox and secured him to conduct. He immediately began worrying about just forty-five players and spoke to the YMF who said they had no prob providing more players. But, as the months went by, it became obvious that space was the issue and forty-five it would be. That made Charles too nervous, since the music was orchestrated for ninety players - so that, coupled with elbow problems caused him to drop out. He'd arranged for the widow Mrs. G to attend. She cut short a trip to do so. After I realized that the forty-five would not be able to play charts scored for ninety, I came up with a solution and offered it to them - to have three key pieces reorchestrated and reduced to forty-five instruments. They declined, saying the guy from the YMF would do the work for free. I expressed my concerns, but got him Charles' personal copies of the scores.
-
I suggested a meeting be set up so I could show him the program I envisioned. No meeting was set up. And, at that point, they simply stopped asking my advice. I was supposed to follow this through, attend rehearsals, and plan ALL the entertainment and the way it was to be presented. But, like most amateurs who don't know what the hell they're doing, they simply thought it was easy and took me out of it. And that was their downfall and hideous error.
Instead of doing my three four minute pieces, they did a seventeen-minute movie medley. But, worse, in announcing them, Cindy was made to read, "Ladies and Gentleman, while you eat your dinner, the YMF will play some Jerry Goldsmith music." Can you imagine the chutzpah of that. Mrs. Goldsmith was LIVID and shouted, "Jerry Goldsmith did not write dinner music" and ran from the room in tears. She came back at some point, and I could see them trying to placate her, but she left again and they followed her out, begging her to come back - she didn't. And I don't blame her. What they did was sacreligeous and offensive and disrespectful. I felt like leaving, too. No one listened, they ate and talked during all seventeen minutes. And when they launced into Star Trek: Nemesis (the wrong piece - should have been Star Trek: The Motion Picture) no one gave a crap.
-
It was a complete disaster, and the head of the foundation had to accept Jerry's award. I'm going to write Mrs. G a letter, just telling her the idea was mine, but that they'd taken me out of it, and that if I'd had any idea of what they were up to I would have called her and told her to stay the hell away.
If I had seen this through, the orchestra would have been spotlit, the house lights down, and Cindy's intro would have made it clear that the audience was supposed to listen and appreciate the MUSIC being played because the composer had something to do with LACC. I also would have had the orchestra miked, so that they could be heard.
Amateurs - what the world doesn't need. I'm sure their event brought in lots of money, but they should be ashamed of themselves for making a travesty of the Goldsmith tribute.
-
...the aroma of dead rodent permeates the air with the sweet, sickly smell of its rotting flesh. That sounds like an ad for a Hammer film, doesn’t it?
No, that's just George back from rehearsal.

Good morning! Yes, it's after 4 in the ayem here in Miami. I've been here most of a week, and start back to LA on an early flight. This is the earliest I have ever posted on this hyar site! George - what are you doing up at this hour, lad???
-
No, that's just George back from rehearsal.

What?? Rehearsal isn't until tonight!

A couple of hours ago, I got back from a party at the house of the director of "Night of the Living Dead! The Musical" and I just finished watching an episode of "Heroes."

I think I'll hit the shower, guzzle some java, and pack up mah stuff.

Hey, George - I have an interview about the Northwest Folklife job on Nov. 2 - just a quick flight up and back, I'll stay over for the annual fundraiser banquet/auction at Seattle Center - what's the weather doing?
-
For the last few days, it's been raining. Off and on, but still raining.
-
I could have used a little more sleep... ah, well, lotsa time to nap once I get to LA - the going East to West thing is even more disorienting than West to East - I leave here early in the morning, sit on a plane forever, and arrive in LA early in the morning...
-
Raining? in Washington? how unusual!
-
I got a swell DVD of my show, from the Friday night performance. All the times I tried to get a usable DVD - GOT ONE!!! Some out of focus scenes early on, but the rest is pretty darn good! I'm going to send one to a theater in Pittsburgh, where our friend td has performed many times - also using it to try to get some work here among the old Jews in south Florida for Jan-Feb 09 (just in case a certain great job doesn't pan out)...
-
How are rehearsals going for your scary musical?? Are you having fun? What are the dates???

Now - for bk's problem:
WILDLIFE CONTROL (http://www.247wildlife.com/dead-animal-attic.htm) informs us:
It starts slowly. You get just a whisp in the air of something that doesn't smell so great. You notice it one second, then not the next. You wonder what's going on, then briefly forget it. Then you smell it again - "What is that?" you wonder. At first it's subtle, but give it another day or two, and it's not so subtle any more! Your house smells terrible! What is that horrifying odor? It smells like rotting meat - no, worse!
If you experience this - you suddenly end up with a horrible stench in your house, the best guess is that an animal has died somewhere inside. Most of the time, it's an animal that was living in the attic of your house. Emphasis on was. Now its life is over, and it's chosen its home, your attic, as its final resting place. However, it does not rest in peace. It rests in juices and maggots and the most horrible smell you've ever smelled. Your house smells like roadkill, and you don't want to live there.
The UNITED EXTERMINATING COMPANY (http://unexco.com/mail/mail28.html) offers:
How long does it take for a rat to decompose? Actually, it depends on a lot of things. How many are actually dead, the ambient temperatures, air change rates, etc.
You could purchase a fan to fit in the window, blowing OUT, creating a negative air pressure in the room. This does help a bit.
If you only have one or two, you could count on a couple of weeks - if they both died at the same time. Usually, one survives longer than the other because of cannibalization - which stretches the smell time out.
If you can tell where they are, sometimes you can open up the wall.... It's hard to tell exactly. I usually tell people to "bite the bullet" and wait it out.
You'll get a bunch of flies later on. Not too much you can do about that either. Luckily, the flies only last a few days.
In otherwords - SELL NOW!

RE: Torchwood (very first episode ever).
I know a bunch of people here watch this show. Well they just started showing it here (they've aired 3 episodes and i've watched 2).
I must say i had no idea what this show was about. and the first episode was really quite interesting and surprising for me.
It is very different than anything else i watch.
But i was sort of surprised during the first show when the woman took out the claw and brought someone back to life for 2 minutes (PUSHING DAISIES).
I really like john barrowman and the english policewoman.
-
Oh re: torchwood, how many episodes are there (and how many have been aired in the US?)

Yesterday, before I finished the PSYCHO films, Mum and I watched (together!) the first three episodes of PUSHING DAISIES back to back, commercial free. Mum enjoyed it very much, and I was more impressed with it in this format than I had been when watching the premiere on commercial television. Since it's very easy to accumulate the episodes following their airing, I'm certain that PUSHING DAISIES will become Saturday afternoon ritual in our house.

Good morning!
Another cool one but the afternoon will be warm again going into the 80s. The next five mornings don't look to be nearly as cool, but the afternoons aren't supposed to be nearly as hot either, so hopefully it wil all balance out.

-
Good morning, fellow Dear Readers.
-
I will watch MY NAME IS EARL while I fix and eat lunch today, but looks like the rest of the afternoon will be spent with the new Criterion release of BREATHLESS. The film itself isn't long, but there are five interviews on the first disc, and the second disc in the set I believe has more complete Godard films rather than short feaurettes, so it'll take me two days on this set, I expect.
-
Looking forward to the gay couple joining the fun on Wisteria Lane tonight, and, as always, BROTHERS & SISTERS is a must-see for me.
I'll give VIVA LAUGHLIN one more chance, and COLD CASE should also be on at the right time since the CBS football game is in the early afternoon this week. DEXTER is also on my line-up to watch.
-
I also had some time this morning to mow portions of the front yard where weeds had sprung up. We haven't had enough rain for ANY grass to grow, but weeds seem to have no trouble at all living and thriving on no water.
-
We don't seem to have mice out here (except for that one woman's house that we cleaned as a service project), so I guess that's a good thing about the desert.

Shocking and distressing news from LACC.....
Things don't just "happen".....planning, rehearsal, cooperation....that's what makes an "effortless" event.
Did anyone in charge comment afterwards that they had made an error....or was it just let go as if nothing had happened?
Shocking.
As for people who commit but won't make a commitment...it seems (even out here in the hinterlands) that everyone wants to build up his resume and say he did this or that or was in this or that....and as long as he can get his name in program or news story....it doesn't matter what the end result is onstage. They are doing it - not for the benefit - but for themselves.

Nobody apologized, except to Mrs. Goldsmith, and I hope that the blame wasn't put on me, as I had nothing to do with it. I have no idea what was said to her, but that certainly would have been an easy out. The evening was a success in their minds - they made a lot of money.

Good morning, all! As one of the characters in DARK OF THE MOON says, I"m feelin' a mite puny today. Around 5 pm last night, something came on fast and violent and I cancelled my evening plans and a morning work session with Ron Raines and went to bed. I got up this morning around 9 and sent emails cancelling the rest of today's appointments, and I'm staying in. I do feel much better than last night, but I'm taking it easy today.
BK, sorry the benefit didn't go well. The next will be better.

DR ELMORE is correct....with a well run benefit following so closely on the heels of one that was a bore....well.....they may think the audience doesn't know....but the audience does.

Only the Goldsmith tribute was poorly done and insulting. The rest of the evening, while long, was what these sorts of events usually are.

And the word of the day is: AMARANTH!
Tequila Lime Marinated Prawns and Black Bean Annato Amaranth with Sweet Red Pepper Oil and Roasted Poblano Cream
Recipe courtesy Chef Mike Dimas, Inn at Loretto
Show: Follow That Food
Episode: Follow That Prawn
Tequila Lime Marinated Shrimp:
1 cup canola oil
1/4 cup chopped fresh garlic
1 bunch cilantro
1/4 cup lime juice
1 jalapeno, stemmed
1/4 cup tequila
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
12 prawns, with heads removed and reserved (see Cook's Note)
3 tablespoons olive oil
1/4 cup tequila
Sweet Red Pepper oil:
4 red bell peppers, stemmed, seeded, and diced
1 lime, juiced
1 cup olive oil
Kosher salt
Black Bean - Annatto Amaranth:
2 1/2 cups chicken stock
1 tablespoon annatto paste
1 cup amaranth *
1 cup black beans, cooked al dente
1/4 cup butter
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Roasted Poblano Cream:
3 garlic cloves, crushed
Reserved shrimp shells
1/4 cup tequila
1 quart heavy cream
1/2 bunch cilantro
4 poblano peppers, roasted, peeled and seeded
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper
*Amaranth is a plant with edible leaves and seeds. This recipe calls for amaranth seeds, a cereal that is available in health food stores.
To marinate the shrimp: Combine the oil, garlic, cilantro, lime, jalapeno, and tequila in a blender or food processor and blend on high speed until thoroughly mixed. Season with salt and pepper and reserve.
Peel the prawns, leaving the tails on. Reserve the shells to make the Poblano cream (recipe below). Extract the 'veins' then lace the prawns onto 3 bamboo skewers (4 per skewer). Pour the reserved marinade into a shallow dish (or plastic bag). Add the shrimp and marinate in the refrigerator for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, turning the shrimp once or twice.
To make the red pepper oil: Bring a medium pot of water to a boil over high heat. Add the peppers and cook until they are tender, about 12 minutes. Drain the peppers and put them in a blender or food processor. Puree the peppers at high speed then transfer to a medium skillet. Cook the puree over medium-high heat until it has reduced to a thick paste. Press the paste though a fine sieve, then return it to the blender or processor. Add the lime juice, then gradually incorporate the olive oil. Season the puree with salt and reserve.
To make the black bean-annatto amaranth: Bring the chicken stock to a boil in a large pot over high heat. Stir in the annatto paste and the amaranth. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer until the liquid has been absorbed and the amaranth is tender, about 20 minutes. Fold in the black beans and butter, then season, to taste, with salt and pepper. Keep warm over low heat or in a low oven.
To make the roasted Poblano cream: Heat the oil in a saucepan over medium-high heat until just smoking. Add the garlic and reserved shrimp shells. Cook, stirring, until aromatic, 3 to 5 minutes. Carefully add the tequila (if the pan is very hot it may flare up). Simmer for about 5 minutes then add the heavy cream and cilantro. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has reduced by half. Meanwhile, puree the Poblano peppers in a blender or food processor. Add the puree to the reduced cream mixture then simmer gently until the flavors blend. Strain the sauce through a fine sieve into a clean saucepan. Keep warm over very low heat.
To cook the prawns: Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Carefully place the skewered prawns in the pan and cook until almost done, about 3 minutes per side. Remove the pan from the heat and carefully add the tequila. Return the pan to the heat and cook for about 3 minutes more, then season with salt and pepper.
Spoon poblano cream into 3 shallow bowls. Mound amaranth over the cream (use a ring mold for a neater presentation). Take the shrimp from the skewers and arrange 4 on each portion. Drizzle pepper oil over each bowl and serve.
Cook's Note: The reserved shrimp heads can be oven roasted or deep-fried and used as a garnish.

Or someone with access to the spoiler-ridden Doctor Who Reference Guide (http://www.drwhoguide.com/who.htm), like myself.
Torchwood does, indeed, have thirteen episodes per series, same as the current Doctor Who. "Greeks Bearing Gifts" was the seventh story.
There have also been three novels about Captain Jack and his cohorts, written and published in Great Britain, which take place during this season. Exactly how "canonical" these are is up for debate, the same as the novels about the Doctor himself.
Isn't the Whoniverse wonderful??!!

Of course you don't have mice, Laura; the tarantulas and gila monsters eat them all.

I had heard that the gay couple was starting today, but all you see in the ads is that everyone on Wisteria Lane gets crabs. Yuck!

Much chocolate has been consumed, and I'm about to start watching Jason King, a British tv series from the 70s that I bought as a present to myself...watching Peter Wyngarde for about four hours will be a nice way to spend the day... :) ..... even if he's on the wrong team... ;D

I got an e-mail this morning (sent here) that the haineshisway.com domain name is expiring in six days. I clicked on the link to pay (this is the FIRST notice I've gotten), but it has some customer number that I don't know, and the password doesn't work. I called them, but this was all set up by Mr. Mark Bakalor - I thought we'd transfered this into my name and account ages ago. Of course, one can never get hold of Mr. Bakalor and his phone number has changed so I've IMd him and e-mailed him - I will not be a happy camper if he doesn't respond.
Usually this is set up through direct pay... they send you poorly worded messages that make you think you actually have to do something, when in reality they just take it out of your bank account on the day.
At least, that's the way IPower does it...

You can thank your local snakes and bats for a mouse free environment - but you do have rodents:

When you launder your socks, do you wash them out outside-out, or inside-out?
Another burning issue of the day - a moral quandary!
I wonder if this will be addressed in today's Republican Presidential debate?

But - if you wash them inside out, do you make sure you put them in the hamper that way? (Or on laundry day do you fuss around under the bed looking for matching socks.)

Computer move went smoothly and I've been to Panera for a nice lunch with DH Richard.

The things you learn on HHW. I had never heard of Peter Wyngarde until 3D menitoned him. After searching the internet, I found that we share a birthday (day not year) and that he supposedly had a ten year affair with Alan Bates. Amazing.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY 3D DIFFUSION!!
Hi all!
I had to work again yesterday and by the time I got home last night, I was so tired I went to bed early.
I won't be working next Saturday no matter what. I have to go out and have a look at the kennel for the dogs. I have heard only good things about it so I'm not worried.
I've heard its far back off of the road and the dogs have nice long runs. Unlike my vet who would have kept them locked in small cages and only walked them twice a day.
I did buy both of them nice large pads/beds because the lady I spoke to on the phone said I could bring them along with any toys or treats and meds. I don't want either of them laying on hard concrete at night. The cold from it will creep up into their hips and I don't like that idea.
I hope everyone here is doing well.
Dear Elmore, I hope that you are feeling better.
BK, I'm sorry for the problems at the event. Oy.

Strict Visa Regulations Discourage Visiting Artists
Post-9/11 Process Adds Costs and Red Tape
By Sarah Kaufman
Washington Post Staff Writer

The Halle Orchestra, one of Great Britain's oldest symphony orchestras, has not toured the United States in more than a decade, so spirits were high when the group secured dates at Lincoln Center and in Upstate New York for performances last winter.
But when the orchestra learned that to get their entry visas, all 85 musicians -- every last cellist, oboist and piccolo player -- would have to travel from their Manchester headquarters to the U.S. Embassy in London for personal interviews, electronic fingerprinting and facial-recognition scans, it scrapped the trip. Budgeting for airfare and travel costs to New York was one thing, but simply getting everyone to the embassy at the same time, along with hotel bills and fees for the visas themselves, would have cost an additional $80,000, said marketing director Andy Ryans.
"It was very simply money that we didn't have," Ryans explained. "We were desperate to go to the States, but our hands were absolutely tied."
...
"The weight of the system is grinding down the arts world to the point where the U.S. market isn't as attractive," said Fairfax immigration attorney Jonathan Ginsburg, who has worked with arts groups for more than a decade.
Visas recently were denied to China's Golden Dragon Acrobats, who have toured the United States regularly for nearly 30 years, according to agent Art Fegan of Nashville. The troupe's latest tour was to start in September but has been held up because the acrobats "could not provide absolute proof that they would return home," Fegan said he learned from the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. (The embassy did not respond to a request for comment.)
Presenters say it is virtually impossible to bring in Burmese or Cuban artists. Performers from Iran, Syria and North Korea undergo especially tough scrutiny. But recently it has become trickier for virtually any foreign artist to get a visa. This summer, Ella Baff, executive director of Jacob's Pillow, the venerable dance festival in Massachusetts, said she had trouble bringing in a visiting scholar from Montreal.

It is an eye-opening and infuriating experience, not the film, but the information contained within. The hubris and stupidity that this film documents makes it one every American should see.
-
I wanted to be able to give BREATHLESS my full attention, so I put on MY FAIR LADY and watched selected scenes while I ate my lunch. Looked nice on the new TV, and I guess this is the best the film will ever look now after the restoration, but it isn't quite the heart-stopping visual feast I remember from seeing it at the reserved seat Capri Theater here in Charlotte.
-
BREATHLESS I had seen before, but it was long ago in a film studies class I took. The print in this new set is pristine.
One can see why the film was SO influential in 1960. It's been borrowed from endlessly since then, so watching it now, one has to remember how new and different this kind of filmmaking was then. Belmondo was certainly a charismatic force in the movie.
-
There are also a series of interviews with Godard, Belmondo, Seberg, and Jean-Pierre Melville filmed between 1960-64 for French TV on this first disc. Ah, so funny to see the first three so fresh and young and beautiful, and so sad to know about Seberg's unhappy end.
-
Tonight, I'll head on to the second disc in the set which contains more interviews, Godard's first short film with Belmondo, and a documentary about the making of the movie.
-

I don't see that it explores much that has not already been covered - Washington botched the War (and, like in the case of school-house shooters, there was lots of competent advice that was ignored).

Hi, all! The weather is glorious here today, and even though Comcast was supposed to come here between 8 & 11, I slept in anyway.
After I got up and they didn't turn up by 11, I walked outside to check out the orange cable that they were supposed to bury but then didn't and then were going to return to today to hang a black cable in the air, which was what we wanted 3 visits ago. (This would have been their 8th visit.)
I didn't see the orange cable, which means that they did the work on Friday. The original plan was to make a repair appointment for Friday, but then they would cancel it for Friday and reschedule for Sunday, because they are not allowed to make repair appointments more than 48 hours out. (Who makes up these rules?)
This was the only way they could think of to schedule it for me when I talked to then on Wed. (I was on the phone for almost a hour!) because I wanted to be home when they came over.
So they did the work Friday even thought I wasn't home, but fortunately everything seems to be working. The billing is still screwed up but I hope they will fix that, too. I actually talked to a guy there that seemed to know what he was doing, after talking to about 20 different stupid earthlings the past month.
I hope I don't have to deal with them again for a long, long time.

As far as silent auctions go, I was disappointed in the Women In Film auction. The did something similar to what our SMA silent auctioneers did, which was lump things into one auction item. So the autographed Merchant Ivory scripts, which should have been auctioned separately, were done all together. Not only does this not give more people a chance to bid, but they probably would have moade more money if they had done them separately.
At our SMA auction, Ken Burns gave me a nice bunch of items from JAZZ: the big coffee table book, the whole series, and music CD's. The auctioneers decided to do this as one package, when again, they would have made more and more people would have left with something if they had split it up.
I think the lumping together is done out of sheer laziness on the auction committee's part, but I thought I would mention it before bk does his silent auction.

Good Evening!
Well, I'm back after spending the day a few hours a couple of minutes with my parents and their friends. So...
When I left the apartment this morning, I called my Dad on his cell. They had literally just pulled into Port Authority, and were getting off their Greyhound bus. I asked why he didn't call me earlier, and he said he thought I wasn't going to be able to join them today. I have no idea where he got that idea, trust me on that one. Besides, the friends they were travelling with had been to NYC recently, and since they were just going to stay in the Times Square area - well, just along 42nd Street, they didn't really need a "tour guide" today. Well... I told them I'd be heading down to Times Square to meet them.
Luckily, when I stepped onto the subway platform, the A train had just pulled up, so I was down at Times Square in about 12 minutes. I called to see where they were, and my Dad said there were having lunch at Burger King. -Weren't we just talking about fast-food yesterday. So, I popped into Burger King to sit with them while they were having lunch. My Mom offered to buy my lunch, but I really wasn't in the mood for Burger King this morning. After lunch, they then headed to the chuch next door to go to the 11:30 Mass. I had a few errands to run - and some breakfast to consume - so I did those things while they were in church. -Yes, I'm lapsed, and I know it - and they know it too. In any case...
-
The awards gala at the Ritz-Carlton was fun---I got to see a lot of folks I hadn't seen in awhile, and sat at James Ivory's table. You could really feel the love in the room when he received his award.
The Dali Lama was also staying at the Ritz-Carlton, but the only person who saw him was the producer sitting next to me, Sara Green. (She has produced some of my favorite films and she presented James with his award.)
-
Last night when Adam got home, we had a snack in the kitchen and Callie sat on one of the bar stools and just purred as we talked. She was very cute about it

Yesterday there was a screening of THE GOLDEN BOWL, which was edited by our friend John, who was also in town for the gala, and to fundraise for his film. He has worked on the last 3 Merchant Ivory films.
James Ivory did a discussion afterwards, led by my friend Kristen, and a great Q&A after that. It was SO interesting and his answers were very thoughtful.
After the Q&A, 8 of us, including James Ivory and our friend John, went out for Chinese food (Greg met us at the restaurant.) . The restaurant was already closed but the owner reopened for us and cooked us an immense and yummy meal, and it was nice having the place to ourselves.
A good time was had by all, and we somehow were not allowed to pay for anything and yet ended up with the take-home boxes. Just as good the next day!
Now I am interested in seeing BOMBAY TALKIE and THE WILD PARTY.
-
Never have I identified more with someone in the news than this woman:
i almost feel bad about laughing. ;D
-
One of the funny stories about THE WILD PARTY:
James Ivory called one of the takes of a scene with Raquel Welch "a bit dull" and asked for a retake. Because of this, Welch walked off the set and refused to return until Jim apologized to her in front of the entire cast and crew. (Raquel tried to have him and some of the other crew fired!) She accepted, and they went on with the film.
Apparently, when he made the apology, it was recorded and they put it on the DVD as an extra! LOL!
-
i almost feel bad about laughing. ;D
Don't...I think its hilarious! Props to Mona!
-
After having brunch at Westway Diner - where I had to "return" a moldy(!) bialy (YUCK!), I headed over to the New Amsterdam to pick up the tickets I had arranged for my parents and their friends, and then I headed back to the church to wait for them to come out. And I waited... And waited...
I peeked in around 12:30 - when the Mass was supposed to end - and they had just started the Communion line... Hmm.. Well, they'll be out in about 10-15 minutes and we're only about 5 minute walk - if that - from the theatre. About 12:45, they came out - they left before the final blessing, and we all started to head to the theatre.
On the way to the theatre, my Dad informed me that my Mom had brought her coffee in with her from Burger King, and ended up spilling it in the pews. Oops... Well... Maybe that's why they cut out of Mass early. ;)
I gave them their tickets, they headed to the front, and I went in through the stage door. Once I got inside, I located my parents - who happened to be in very good seats - ninth row, center, on the aisle - and the show began. I saw them briefly at intermission, and then as the BC/EFA speeches (it's that time of year again already!) were being made after the Bows, they started to come up the aisle. "We're going to go ahead and take the 4:00 bus back to Atlantic City." What?!?!?!
It turns out, that some other friends who were in AC this weekend are high-rollers, and there was some super deluxe meal being held for the casino's "special guests" tonight. And my parents wanted to make it back there in time for that special meal, that special free meal. Originally, they were thinking they would have dinner in the City, and then head back on the 8:00 bus. Then at lunch today, they said they were going to take the 5:00 bus so that they could do a little bit of sight-seeing after the show. Well... Once the BC/EFA speeches were done, I ushered them out the 41st Street doors, and toward Port Authority.
And that was basically how I spent the "day" with my parents.
Of course, when I had talked to them last week, they kept asking me why I hadn't come back down to Virginia to visit anyone... And why I don't call them on a regular basis... Etc., etc., etc... But my parents did love the show - my Dad told me how much he really liked it, and that was just after the first act! And my Mom ended up slipping me a wad of bills to cover the cost of the tickets, as well as some "extra money" - since they had noticed I had lost some weight, and were worried that I didn't have enough money to buy food! ;D
-
LOL.....I am sorry to have called you dull, Ms Welch.
-
In any case, it was good seeing my parents and their friends today, even it turned out for a briefer time than I had thought it would be. They really did enjoy the show, and, sort of surprisingly, so did I (again).
And it was great seeing Alexandra go on for her second show as Jane Banks. She did a "prac-ti-cal-ly perfect" job, and I'm sure it will only get more "perfect" as she gets more shows under her belt.
-
edi-your yesterday sounds like fun. thanks for all the details.
-
- since they had noticed I had lost some weight, and were worried that I didn't have enough money to buy food! ;D

-
After the matinee, since I had a bit of unexpected free time on my hands, I decided to walk around for a bit, and take care of some phone calls. While walking and talking, I happened to run into the absolutely wonderful and "Truly Scrumptious" Erin Dilly, and her beautiful 18-month old daughter. -The last time I had seen Erin, she was still pregnant, so it had been a while since we had seen each other.
She was trying to find the stage door to the Brooks Atkinson to meet up with her hubby, Stephen Buntrock, who's currently playing the Teen Angel in Grease. Well, she got her theatres and streets mixed up, so we ended up walking together for a few blocks to get to the right street and the right theatre. Well, by the time she was supposed to be there, he husband called to say that he was about to go on. -They just wanted to pop in to say HI to Daddy at the stage door. So, we just ended up having a nice time catching up, and we even got some good dishing in. Then they headed off to play in the park, and I headed over to Virgin. -Yes, I had a coupon. ;)
-
rotflol ;D
Well, my Dad's first words out his mouth when I popped into Burger King weren't "Hi, Jojo," or "Good to see you," they were, "You've lost weight." :)
-
I hope I don't have to deal with them again for a long, long time.
Here in lower, slower, southern Delaware the COMCAST folks, themselves, are pleasant, accessable, and professional however, they sub-contract out their installation service! When our service went out, the actual COMCAST guy came out to check and discovered that the installer had spliced our cable with electrical tape before burying it. (Ground rodents love to dine on electrical tape!) The COMCAST guy was really pissed at the idiot sibs.) Later, a real COMCAST guy was next door and I pointed out to him that our orange cable was not properly buried and was poking up through the gravel in the drive. I said nothing else, two days later COMCAST was out and reburied the cable - I didn't even have to put in a trouble call.

I also called my brother, Mike, just to say Hi. It turns out that due to some of the kids' schedules over the past two weeks, they just weren't able to make it up to NYC. However, my brother Mike will be coming up in two weeks to cheer on my brother, Jay, who's coming into town to run the NYC Marathon. So, hopefully, the three of us can get together that weekend for a bit.
It's also my nephew's, John Michael's Birthday today too! So, I was able to wish him a Very Happy Birthday, and apologize for not being able to make it to his bowling(!) party tomorrow after he gets out from school. He was very understanding, and told me he still loves me, and that he misses me... Which, of course, made me cry.
I also talked to my niece, Alyssa, who informed me that Emily is indeed walking around a lot, and that even though Emily is walking now, she is still helping to take care of her... Which, of course, made me cry even more.
But it was a happy cry. And, hopefully, I'll see them in a week or two. I have four days off in a row coming up, so I'm gonna try and make it down there for a day or two. -I also have a backlog of birthday presents to take care of too. ;)
-
Oh... And Virgin is having a nice sale on selected Criterion titles. Just sayin'... -And when you happen to have a $5.00-off-your-purchase coupon or two... Again, just sayin'... :)

DR edisaurus - Sounds like you had another splendid evening with Mr. Ivory and friends. I'm just sorry the auction was set-up badly.

BK - Thought I'd share this list that summarizes the NYMF jury awards for 2007. 15 of the 16 awards were won by Next Link shows, and the only one (choreography) won by an Invited Work was won by PLATFORMS - a 3-performance dance piece which was all about the choreography.
(Note that all the individual performance awards were won by Next Link shows; no one in the Invited Works was deemed worthy of an individual acting award). I'm only presenting facts, drawing no conclusions about the status of Invited Works in these awards.
NEXT LINK MUSICALS
Austentatious – 1 award
Back Home – I honorable mention
Boy in the Bathroom – 4 awards, 2 honorable mentions
Gemini – 1 award
Going Down Swingin’ – 1 award
Love Sucks – 1 honorable mention
Mud Donahue & Sons – 1 award, 1 honorable mention
Petite Rouge – 1 honorable mention
Sherlock Holmes – 1 award, 2 honorable mentions
Such Good Friends – 3 awards
Sympathy Jones – 1 award

Yellow Wood – 2 awards, 1 honorable mention
INVITED WORKS
Beastly Bombing – 1 honorable mention

But - if you wash them inside out, do you make sure you put them in the hamper that way? (Or on laundry day do you fuss around under the bed looking for matching socks.)
The reason I asked is because I just bought a couple more pairs of socks, and the washing instructions say it's best to wash them inside-out. And I don't even think I've ever come laundering instructions for socks. I mean, it does makes sense that since the inside of the sock has contact with your foot, your skin, then that would be a good reason to wash them inside-out. However, what about the dirt that builds up on the outside of the sock. If they sock is turned inside-out, then how does the outside get properly cleaned?
It's a puzzlement.

The TV I just made room for needs to be hooked up to cable, so DH Richard is going to call Time Warner tomorrow. We've been pretty pleased with our TV and Internet service so far - hope he has a better experience with TW than DR Edi has had with Comcast!
I've had few problems with Time Warner for tv and computer.
-
Have to quit shredding old financial papers for a while and go eat popcorn.
Bye for now!
-
hi larry. are u feeling better
-
Happy BD to 3D Diffusion!!! Enjoy your ham chunks and cheese slices!
-
Where?
Well, JoJo, I always turn the other cheek.
-
I thought you promised me that you didn't take any photos!
Go watch ROYAL WEDDING!
-
My DH says that if you turn your Thorlo socks inside out before washing them, they will last longer.
My theory is that you will reach for the socks that aren't inside out first, instead of the Thorlo, and that's why they last longer.
I always wash my socks rightisde out, since they pick up so much cat fur. Same with the clothes!
-
I've been so busy all day today - possibly to keep my mind off of NOT BEING IN NYC - four loads of laundry, two cooked meals, etc, that following my 7:45pm shower, Dixie Bell insisted that I roll around on the floor with her and her toys! (I would've taken her for a third walk, but, you know what they say about walking about at night with wet hair). . .
-
Good Evening!
Quote from Jose from 10/19/07
Well, I think I just left my last Mary Poppins rehearsal. The put-in went very well, and Alexandra did a great job. She goes on for real tomorrow afternoon, and I'll probably stand in the back of the house and watch her first show. *And then my parents will be in the audience Sunday afternoon for her second show. -Meanwhile, I think I'll be over at Carnegie Hall listening to Beethoven piano sonatas played by Andras Schiff.
Hmm, perhaps Jose's folks do read Haines His Way!

I had heard that the gay couple was starting today, but all you see in the ads is that everyone on Wisteria Lane gets crabs. Yuck!
Crabs are tasty with some Old Bay Seasonings...
...Huh?...
...Oh, you mean...
Never mind.
-
Started watching a motion picture on DVD and woke up thirty-five minutes later.
-
Happy Birthday, DR 3DDiffusion! Hope it was grand!
-
DR MattH, I did not realize that you guys were in season 2 of TORCHWOOD. I wonder if they will air both seasons back to back here.
Thanks for the info.
-
I am watching a really really good show on CBC (canadian television). It's called Triple Sensation (the search for a musical theatre triple threat). The judges are cynthia dale (canadian actress), the choreographer from JERSEY BOYS, Garth Drabinsky, some Shakesperian English director, and Marvin Hamlisch.
There were only 3 episodes but tonight is the finale. They chose 2 males and 2 females from 3 final cities. Those 12 went to a master class. And now the final 6 are being chosen by the panel (i think the winner (scolarship) must also be tonight).
-
Thanks also to DR SWW for the info re: Torchwood.
-
DR Jennifer, I think you may have mis-read what DR Matt posted.
Only season one of Torchwood has been broadcast so far, both here in the United States (on BBC-America) and in Great Britain (on BBC-3).
The second season (series, as it is called in GB) will have it's first run in Great Britain in early 2008.
And you are welcome!
(I'm refraining from posting any casting spoilers. ::))

For DR Singdaw:
Today was a perfect day to introduce the kitties to the wonders of the screened-in back porch.
After much fearful exploration, they settled in. As you would expect, the boys took up residence in the recliners!
But where's the remote??
-
hi larry. are u feeling better
About the same as I felt this morning.
-
Page Eight I'd Dance With John Barrowman Any Day Dance!
-
JOSE not getting enough to eat? That's rich!!
Jose, I didn't notice any mention of the L-word in your post. Did you not treat your parents to these delicious morsels?
-
Oops... Gotta slip into the kitchen, to get dinner started and to watch Next Iron Chef America.
Roast chicken and carrots!
-
Page Eight I'd Dance With John Barrowman Any Day Dance!
I hear he's such an exhibitionist, I doubt he can dance with his pants around his ankles.
-
JENNIFER, the CBC does indeed have some wonderful programs. I LOVE Canadian television, esp TVO, and some of the radio broadcasts as well.
-
My tummy is bugging me. Not naseous at all, just little pains - I think there was something bad last night, food-wise.
-
JOSE not getting enough to eat? That's rich!!
Jose, I didn't notice any mention of the L-word in your post. Did you not treat your parents to these delicious morsels?
Well, frankly, after having lunch at Burger King, well... ;)
And my parents are not "sweets" persons anyway. Well, except for the plethora of Filipino rice-flour based ones.
-
jose, did you mean they are NOT sweets persons
-
dr elmore, i'm sorry-hope you are fine by morning
-

Is it because he's a Lesbian?

Maybe they asked the chef for ideas, then decided to do it themselves. ;)
-
Hope you feel better, Larry.
-
jose, did you mean they are NOT sweets persons
Yes. And corrected. ;)
-
Hope you feel better, too, Bruce.
-
DR Lawrence Moore....many vibes for feeling fit as a fiddle very soon!
-
my back is hurting. the cause of my back pain is a rather severe stomach ache. i get this every so often, have done so as long as i can remember. i'm going to go put a heating pad on my stomach. if i don't get rid of this by tomorrow afternoon i won't be up to getting a cast on my arm.... and i wouldn't want to miss that, it sounds so exciting.;D
-
'night

Hope you feel better, too, Jane.

I am currently in the middle of my second Bollywood movie of the weekend BAABUL (2006) starring Salman Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malina, and John Abraham.
It is quite an egrossing movie about life and love and tragedy. But then, what Bollywood movie isn't.

Good night, Jane. I hope you feel better soon.
We wouldn't want you to miss the fun of having a cast put on!
-
tummy vibes to BK and to Jane!
-
Got leaves raked, grass mowed, and lawn fertilized and "limed."
Afterwards I walked Dog Bosco then I took a shower the realized I was starving so took my biography of Charles McGraw to Star India and had a mega huge lunch...I could barely move afterwards, I was so full....and sleepy...I almost fell asleep driving back home, which was only about 2 miles.
Took a looooooooooooooong nap with Dog Bosco.
-
Will we never get to page nine?
-
I think we need a frenzy or three.
-
I ate a donut.
-
I'm watching a motion picture on DVD.
-
Feel Better vibes to Larry, Jane, BK, TCB and anyone I'm forgetting who needs them~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
I went to No End In Sight this afternoon. It wasn't really eye opening or shocking to me. I wasn't surprised about any of it. But it does present the whole SNAFU in Iraq in a chronological and understandable way
-
I think this here release from Criterion will likely make a few DRs very happy:
on 1/15 (SRP $69.95) will be a 5-disc box set containing I Live in Fear, The Idiot, No Regrets for Our Youth, One Wonderful Sunday and Scandal!
-
Can someone 'splain to me what anamorphic widescreen on a DVD?
-
Don't know
-
Can someone 'splain to me what anamorphic widescreen on a DVD?
I don't think you'll have to worry about it. Bollywood movies don't come that way.
;D
-
Otherwise, if you search the archive posts for the terms, you should find a couple posts about it.
Or you could just Google or Wikipedia it. ;)
-
I have another very busy week coming up. I probably should have gotten a lot of work done this weekend, but I'm glad I just took the time to relax. I feel much better
-
Hmmm... I'm sleepy already... ???

ANNA MORPHIC was a chameleon-like actress from the Golden Age. She co-starred in several fims with VERA SIMLITUDE.

It means it's enhanced for 16 x 9 television screens:

Jeanne, laura, mbarnum, and cilla thanks for the good thoughts. They seem to be working and I’m somewhat better.
Bruce, I hope your tummy ache isn’t worse after eating a donut, one of the worst things you could have eaten.

Happy Birthday 3DDiffusion

Baagbhul from the makers of Baghbaan.
Doesn't sound like a movie - sounds like a medicine!!
-
I hope DRs JANE, FJL, TCB, ELMORE, and MR BK start feeling better.
This is becoming like a site for Marcus Welby, M.D.
-
I will call about my car tomorrow, but I am not optimistic about having it.
I ordered a lot of DVD's online today.
THE WILD PARTY - inspired by DR EDISAURUS' comments, and THE LAST VOYAGE starring Tami Marihugh.
Two box sets of Marlon Brando movies that were discussed here months ago....but got them both used for a total of about $40 including shipping.
-
Did anyone watch Mr Dirk Bogarde in A TALE OF TWO CITIES this morning?
Battleship Potempkin is on TCM at Midnight EDST tonight....
-
I hear he's such an exhibitionist, I doubt he can dance with his pants around his ankles.
I'd, um, support him, prop him up from behind, something like that.
::)
-
I need to hie
To beddy-bie.
At least the bird turned out well.
Until later.
-
DR MattH, I did not realize that you guys were in season 2 of TORCHWOOD. I wonder if they will air both seasons back to back here.
Thanks for the info.
We are not in season two of TORCHWOOD. I said the Region 2 DVD set was released. Said nothing about Season 2.
-
I'd, um, support him, prop him up from behind, something like that.
::)
Well... After being "stuck" with him in an elevator backstage at the Kennedy Center, I can safely say he doesn't need any support.
:o
-
Can someone 'splain to me what anamorphic widescreen on a DVD?
And I hope when you got your new TV that you told your DVD player via the setup menu that you no longer had a regular (4:3) TV but a 16:9 (widescreen) TV. It makes a BIG difference in the DVD player's ability to show discs properly.
-
Good evening one and all!!
Tough weekend... WEnt home and tended to somethings for my parents. Put away some of the outdoor stuff for winter. Oddly, we have not had a hard freeze yet. We normally have one in September.
My dad is still working but his temperament at times is pretty rough.
-
Speaking of dead rodent, I saw a few dead squirrels on the road on the way back to fargo

I spent most of the evening prior to prime time watching the special features on the second disc in the BREATHLESS set. There was an archived interview with Jean Seberg circa 1964. There were a couple of video essays about Godard's views on making films from his critical essays and how they were instituted when he filmed BREATHLESS. D. A. Pennebaker contributed an interview in which he discussed how methods of making documentaries were incorporated into the New Wave's theories of making narrative films. There was also a short film made by Godard prior to BREATHLESS starring Jean-Paul Belmondo.
The only thing I didn't get to was the 80 minute documentary made in 1994 about the making of the film. I'll watch it tomorrow, hopefully in a single setting. I only had about 40 minutes before prime time TV started tonight and didn't want to start and stop it.
-
Jeanne, laura, mbarnum, and cilla thanks for the good thoughts. They seem to be working and I’m somewhat better.
Bruce, I hope your tummy ache isn’t worse after eating a donut, one of the worst things you could have eaten.
‘night again
Oh, but they taste soo good.
-
I did start and stop the documentary THE DAWN OF SOUND on THE JAZZ SINGER disc 2. I'm enjoying it enough, and saw some clips especially dealing with the Movietone sound-on-film trials that I hadn't seen before. Hopefully, I can finish it tomorrow.
-
I did watch VIVA LAUGHLIN tonight (episode #2). I doubt the show will run much longer, and they definitely need to drop the singing as no one in the cast can sing especially the leading man who was noticeably flat on his songs tonight.
-
Well, there's one inning left to go in the World Series...
Go Sox!
:)
-
...And I think the slight headache I have right now is a "I need sleep" headache, so...
Goodnight.
-
DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES introduced the new gay couple tonight. I'm sure they're going to have secrets of their own that we'll learn about in due course, but tonight they were basicaly punch lines for Susan's ineptitude.
I did love the Shirley Knight storyline and will be glad to have this talented actress around for as many episodes as they can draw out the story.
-
Well, there's one inning left to go in the World Series...
Go Sox!
:)
Um, not the World Series yet. It's the American League Playoff game.
-
healing vibes to Jane....
Miss Jane, My freind sandy wants to get a bernese mountain dog and hubby says no... In my freind's support, I told her they were big and LOVEABLE!!!
-
Page Ten Hagrid Dance!!!
-
Part of me just wants to go home and have a good cry... However I am strong and will hold my head up...
-
Every time I see Brian Blessed I am reminded of him being in Z CARS.
-
MattH, MSUM in Moorhead is doing Sweeney Todd in February.
-
I am a little nervous about their production and dont want to compare it with the Len Cariou recording of the musical.
-
BROTHERS & SISTERS had a noisy episode.
I knew as soon as that new office manager was hired at the wine company that Tommy would have an affair with her. Very disappointed in such obvious plotting especially since she was such an obvious stand-in for Julia. Uncle Saul's coming out looks to be slow and torturous. So sorry Justin is going down the path he's chosen. Sad times ahead!
-
I haven't seen any productions of SWEENEY TODD apart from the Broadway and the Lansbury/Hearn home video that didn't disappoint me in some way.
My fingers are crossed for the movie. I so want it to be worthy of the material.
-
I will also have DEXTER and COLD CASE from tonight to watch tomorrow at some point.
-
Going to write a little bit now and then go to bed.
Good night!
-
I agree Matt, I love the recording. It gets heavy play.
-
Have you seen Into the Woods?
-
Pleasant dreams MattH....
-
All is well in the realm of NDSU sports
We defeated University of Minnesota!!!
-
Comfort vibes to Dakota!
-
And congrats to NDSU, too!

We just returned from seeing a movie we both liked very much: LARS AND THE REAL GIRL.
It was produced by Sidney Kimmel and the DP was Adam Kimmel.
And relation to our own bk?
The directing and casting was excellent, with a very original script. Ryan Gosling was great as were all the supporting players.
-
Hello I am sorry to have been so E & T ... the Vixter and the Vixdad have been monopolizing our sole computer, and since they were doing homework/work related stuff they trumped my social visits...
VIBAGE FOR ALL!!!
-
And I hope when you got your new TV that you told your DVD player via the setup menu that you no longer had a regular (4:3) TV but a 16:9 (widescreen) TV. It makes a BIG difference in the DVD player's ability to show discs properly.
After I posted earlier, asking about anamorphic widescreen, I discoverd this. I had noticed that whenever I tried to watch a movie that was filmed in widescreen and have it fill up the TV screen it all looked wonky. I checked the DVD player's set up and switched from 4:3 to 16:9 and wallah...my Bollywood movie looked fantastic and it was in widescreen without anything being cut-off!
I have a lot to learn about these newfangled things which, up till now, I had ingnored.
And DR Jose, I will have you know that Bollywood movies are quite up to date, technology wise...and had you gone to see that Hindi movie with DR Rodzinski and I, you would know better! 8)
And I think that is why Rodzinski has not been seen or heard from lately...he became so enamored of that Bollywood movie that he has likely ordered dozens of them on DVD and is busy watching them.
Or not.
-
DR Edisaurus, did you have an opportunity to discuss with James Ivory his Bollywood movies? Didn't he just adore working with Helen in Bombay Talkies!!??? I must know everything!
-
Most of the Bollywood movies I've rented and purchased are anamorphically enhanced, very few are not.
-
TD, I highly recommend BAABUL...but be sure to invest in kleenex!
-
And speaking of BAABUL, how about a nice John Abraham page 10 dance!!

Question for DRs.
Other than the titles for two "Tammy" films, did Sandra Dee record any other material?

Question for DRs.
Other than the titles for two "Tammy" films, did Sandra Dee record any other material?
From a Sandra Dee Fan Page (http://sandradeefans.com/sdsings.html)
Actress Sandra Dee also had a brief recording career. She sang on the Soundtrack to the film "The Snow Queen"(Decca DL-8977/DL 78977) and released a single from the film called "Do It While You're Young" which was backed with "Questions" in 1960.Another single followed, "Dear Johnny/"When I Fall In Love" (Decca 9-31042) that year. Her final record was "Tammy Tell Me True"/"Lets Fall In Love" (Decca 9-31265) in 1961.She also sang in a few of her movies besides "The Snow Queen". Miss Dee sang in "Tammy tell Me True" and "Take Her She's Mine" . She did NOT however, sing in "Tammy And the Doctor" and " "Doctor, You've Got to Be Kidding".(Her voice was dubbed).
IT IS RUMORED THAT Sandra Dee is also on two import Cd's:""Stars of The Silver Screen"(2-MCA 6-28344DT) from Germany that was released in 1987 and "Pixie Girls" (MCA-WMC5-95) from Japan that was released in 1991.

Before it's too late...a Very Happy Birthday to 3DDiffusion! :D
-
Today, I got up and met my friend Margo at a local restaurant, Darby's, for lunch. Last May, I won two free tickets to see Harlequin Production's current production of "Macbeth." We saw it today. It was very good. After that, I came home for a little bit, then I went to rehearsal. I was told that we would get sheet music for the show, but WE DIDN'T! :P Josh, the composer/music director, said that he ran out of black ink. He then realized that he could e-mail everyone a PDF file of the score. That would be good...why didn't he think of that sooner?? Anyway, HOPEFULLY he'll actually do that very, very soon.

If it's not too late:
