Title: THE SWEDISH NOTES
Post by: bk on October 22, 2005, 12:06:36 AM
Well, you've read the notes, both in English and Swedish, and now it is time for you to post until the Swedish cows come home - they're out trying to catch some Swedish fish.

There were no big stars at the opening of the play.  There were a lot of hearing-impaired people at the opening of the play.  Even the old reliable Joanne Worley was missing.  Mr. Blackwell was, as always, there.

I'm trying to ketchup, but I'm still only on Page 8 of yesterday's posts.  But TCB, you'll be happy (I hope) to know that I purchased a ticket for tonight's (Saturday's) performance of My Fair Lady starring YOU!  I'll be in row D.  I hope that that's not too close.  I don't remember if I'll be sitting off to the side or in the middle section.

There's nothing quite as pretty as Marry in the morning. (an Al Martino reference)

Thank you one and all but I think it shall be a very rare occurrence.   Normally I would have no trouble getting some zzzzz's right about now.

I'm not sure how the Mac book works, BK, but depending on how big your mailing list is and if you send to the same people over and over it's very easy to create a label page that you can save.

George, I am so glad you will get to see the show on Saturday night.   I will tell Chris tomorrow at the matinee that you will be there.  The entire cast goes out in front of the theater after the show, and Chris and I are usually standing together.  So, you had better track us down.

Topic of the Day:

Play:  Last week, I saw for the first time, a local production of The Woman in Black (which bears no resemblance to ALW's A Woman in White).  It actually has three people, but the third person who plays the "woman" never speaks and is only on for very short periods of time in "a small, but pivotal role."  Highly recommended.

Musical:  I Do! I Do!  I've never seen this live, but I have the Lee Remick/Hal Linden videotape and I think it's delightful.

BK and any others who don't know how,
Here is how to do labels in Word.

Open Word,
Go to tools,
Letters and Mailings,
Envelopes and Labels,
Click on the Labels tab,
Options,
Pick the Avery label number that matches what you bought
Click OK
Click New Document
And then you should see the outline of the labels.

Type in the names/address in those spaces and off you go.

You can save those pages.

A merge would be a bit harder for me to tell you how to do.  I'm not sure how Word would see your address book.  I wouldn't be sure what to tell you to click without my seeing it.

Well, I must turn into a Wussburger.  I have to take out my contact lenses and go to sleep.  I have to usher at noon for a (work related) talk today before I go see My Fair Lady, but I have to wash and dry my usher clothes in time to usher at noon.

Goodnight all!  And see you in person, TCB!!

Yes, I did watch I Do! I Do! - I did, I did.  I enjoyed it very much - very sweet.

There's a two-hander comedy I was very fond of in the 60s, called Rattle of a Simple Man, which I saw with Miss Tammy Grimes and Mr. John Astin.  I was also fond of The Typists and The Tiger, two one-acts by Murray Schisgal, starring Eli Wallach and Anne Jackson.  Sleuth, of course.  Two For The Seesaw is a very nice play.

I guess I should head in as well.  But I'm not the least bit sleepy.

Brandi was barking outside so I went out  to see what the fuss was about and she had a possum cornered.  Cute little devil with his rat tail, bright eyes and hissing like a cat.

I put Brandi in the house and scooted him/her out the gate.  This is a busy place after dark!  Who knew?

Hi JRand!

I was sorry to read about your car window, MBarnum.  I'm just glad you weren't hurt.  Better they broke into your car then your house and cause you harm.

Vibes to Ron Pullman to breath better.

Happy Birthday and best wishes today to Miss Annette Funicello!  ;D

Her special charm escaped few of us.  And certainly she is an example of personality over talent.

She has often said when people would see her smoking in public and express shock and dismay that America's sweetheart would be puffing on a Lark, she would reply:  "I also have three children, so guess what else I do?"

Joe and Virginia Funicello's little girl is not in the best of health now - good thoughts and prayers are always welcome.  :'(

And now there will be two HHW connections to the Las Vegas production of HAIRSPRAY!!

MAMMA MIA! is a good choice.  I enjoyed it very much.  I am not sure it would be something I would see in NYC - but it was a lot of FUN!!

I know at least 3 DR's who have Annette CD compilations they can listen to today!  Although at least one may be "in storage."

Today I had a typical Japanese (not Swedish) style lunch set with my friend and enjoyed it very much. The set was composed Sashimi (row fish), vegetables in various recipes and grilled fish. And we had a special dessert, a fig courted with caramel with milk Bavarian cream. I think it had a quite strange taste I’d never had, if you ask me.

Good morning, all!  Wow!  DRDanise up at all godforsaken hours!  This is another first, or is time out of joint?   How are you feeling, DRDanise?

Today, I'm back to the Chicago work, and I'm meeting the daughter of freinds in Ohio later in the afternoon.  She's a freshman at Ohio State University, and one of her art classes is here on a museum visit.

Tomorrow, I crash.

Spoo!  I forgot the TOD.  I forgot it yesterday, but all I had was the cheap porn.

THE FOURPOSTER
GREATER TUNA
A TUNA CHRISTMAS
SLEUTH

With all the discussion of Marni Nixon  I remember in an interview for The Sound of Music where she recounts that she was asked by Julie Andrews to sing the high notes at the end of Do Re Mi. She said: " I love to dub ya, but I just wash my habit"

Saturday greetings from rainy SW Ohio!  I was E & T all day yesterday, because it was quite a day.  Our entire library system was closed for our annual Staff Day at the Dayton Masonic Center.  Many boring speeches, but some good break-out sessions, including one with audio book narrator Tom Stechschulte and the concluding "motivational" speaker Dr. Scott Sheperd.

As soon as I arrived home from Staff Day,  I jumped from my car to DH Richard's.  We went out to dinner and then to Oxford for a concert by the Miami University Collegiate Chorale and the Men's Glee Club (of which DH was a member 40 years ago).  Today, I'm at work, trying to stay awake.

DR MBarnum - I was so sorry to read in yesterday's posts about your car break-in.  Hope everything works out OK.

By the way, at the concert we attended last night both ensembles did pieces by Indian film composer A. R. Rahman and it was announced that he's going to be there for their concert tonight.  Also, on April 22, 2006, he'll be back here in OH for a concert by the Miami University Collegiate Chorale, Chamber Singers, and Global Rhythms Ensemble.

TOD - The Gin Game, which I saw in Boston with Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn, 'way back in 1978.

TOY - CD (car) - audiobook Rococo, by Adrianna Trigiani, narrated by Stephen Hoye.  DVD - Six Feet Under, Season 4, disc 2.

TITANIC the special edition and The DORIS DAY SHOW season two are both due this week, I think.

Along with the second season of BEWITCHED, the new LOONEY TUNES GOLDEN COLLECTION 3, DARLING LILI, DETECTIVE STORY, and others My wallet was especially empty after ordering this week's items of note.

I, however, did not order TITANIC. I got the first non-anamorphic release used for $5. That's all I'll EVER need as I don't intend to ever sit through the whole thing again. There are parts of it that I will look at from time to time.

Today is also the birthday of child actor Jonathan Lipnicki.

Favorite First Season Episodes:

The Stolen Costume with Veda Ann Borg
Riddle of the Chinese Jade
Mystery in Wax
Rescue

Phyllis Coates looks great and drives that great Rambler or whatever it is with the push back roof.  And I love when she flips on the key and has to jam down on the starter.  Great scream, too!

I like all of those episodes, but I think "The Mysterious Village" is my favorite. "Mystery in Wax" ranks right up there, however. I remember as a kid, this scared me to death. They also got a lot of use out of that cave set they had.

Noel and Phyllis played such different Loises. Noel almost never screamed. Phyllis spent much of that first season screaming.

I'll give you a full report after I've watched the documentary this afternoon.

We were grandladding again yesterday.

The good news was that Alex was very well behaved.  The bad news was that William was not in a behaving mood.

The good news was that Alex enjoyed the Delaware Museum of Agriculture.  The bad news was that William just wanted to run around and act antsy.  I had to hold him down and give him a time out.

The good news was that ... wait, lunch was at McDonald's.  That's automatically bad news.  Bleh.

Then we went shopping.  Der B is bound and determined that I have a cell phone with me.  (I lost the old one, I know not where.)  The new one flips open, so I can pretend I'm Captain Kirk and say "Beam me up, Scotty" when I call der B to tell him it's time to pick me up at work.  It also takes pictures, and can IM and do all sorts of silly things phones never did when I was growing up.  We also picked up a copy of the Astaire/Rogers DVD set.  The good news was that Alex was interested in looking at the CD cases, and reading what was on them.  The bad news was that William wanted to treat the store as a playground.

Then we found a bookstore.  Lo and behold, more good news: Alex now likes books!  In particular there's a series called "The Magic Treehouse," and whoever wrote the books is making a fortune because of their popularity.  So we got him some of those.  The bad news was that William wanted to treat the store as a playground.  I carried him out.

Fortunately, it was time to head back to home.  No movies.

And the final bit of good news: I slipped Elton John's Caribou into the car CD player, and both Alex and William liked it!  What with their earlier encounter with the Beatles (Yellow Submarine), der B and I are getting them interested in rock!  (Of course, when they memorize and start singing the first song from the John disc in front of their mother, there may be a problem.  For those of you who don't remember, it's "The Bitch Is Back.")

Of course, when we got the lads back home and I mentioned that William had been acting up, Mommy couldn't wait for me to elaborate and had to start grilling William about what he'd done.  And then she grilled der Grampa about the entire day.  The bad news was that she didn't even talk to me from that point on, as if I didn't matter.  Or maybe that was the good news.

When we got home, a couple of boxes were waiting for us.  I've got a stack of twenty books about cooking and food waiting for my perusal.

And that's what I call good news.

(A shipment from Kritzerland is expected soon, too!  My whole life doesn't revolve around food, after all!   :D)

Opps, my bad.  I got up to check on the C&D and forgot to log off!

Thank you for the congrats, DR Jane.

Thank you DR Ginny for the well wishes.  That anesthesia IS the worst part of the whole thing.  Like I've said, I feel like a fake.  No pain, no real problems to speak of.  I don't even know why I bother to fill the pain pill prescription.  It's just going to sit there.

On the other hand, the first time I had this done, my throat hurt so bad afterwards that it took days before I swallow or talk right.

The 2nd time I had no problems of that kind at all.  I wisely requested the same anesthesiologist for this time around so I have no complaints at all!

DR S.Woody White--I agree with you about the cell phone.  In fact, phones in general as people will attest.  I am very hard to get a hold of by phone. The cell phone is almost always turned off or on vibrate mode—which I forget to turn off and therefore don’t realize the darn thing is ringing since I can’t feel it in my purse.

Speaking of which….I just realized it’s been in my Mom’s purse since Thursday on vibrate mode.

DR TCB—That’s right.  It looks like we’re going to have the north side of it brush by us but I don’t think it’s going to be that bad.  Still keeping a close eye on it, in case it turns a bit more our way.  This is the hard part.  The waiting and watching which way the thing is going to go.

I was honestly thinking about going back to work on Monday instead of wasting my vacation time but Mom keeps saying over and over how glad she is that I’m going to be home in case that thing heads our way.  Sooo I guess it was meant for me to be home next week.

I'm back from my wanderings, and shall now do a few things prior to rehearsal at three.

I did go to storage again to find elmore's marvelous chart for my song What Do I Do Now, which was on the Shakespeare on Broadway album and which we're doing at the LACC benefit.  It was buried deep and I had to lift about twenty boxes (separately, of course) to get to it.  Some of the older albums were before I had Maury Bernstein assisting me, and she was great about organizing everything by song, but these pre-Maury ones are a shambles and it took me thirty minutes to finally sort out all the parts for the song and find everything, but I did, so all's well.  We're not having an orchestra for the show, but we'll assign some of the parts to the second keyboard.

Train Of Love was outsold by Paul Anka's version (which was I think an Australia only release as a single).

The documentary on the SUPERMAN set is rudimentary at best. Nothing new is imparted, and it's pretty basic information already out there (John Hamilton used a script on his desk and pasted into newspapers and books; was upset when Jack Larson called him "John" instead of "Mr. Hamilton), etc.

Looked at a couple of episodes, and they looked just fine through there was some print damage on one of them. Haven't looked at any that have commentaries; I'll do that tonight.

I generally watch Lucy taming the tigresses in "Bring on the Beautiful Girls," and then skip to "Limehouse Blues" and then "This Heart of Mine."

I've never found any of the so-called comedy sketches remotely funny.  I think it's a generational thing.

It is a fascinating commentary track; I heard it once and was most impressed with it. I wish I had that laserdisc. I could only afford the MGM issue of SINGIN' IN THE RAIN at the time laserdiscs were readily available.

I was sad Warners didn't license that commentary from Criterion when they did that mammoth edition of SINGIN' IN THE RAIN same years back. There is information there that real fans of the movie would really appreciate.

Red Skelton's bit is funny, but a studio audience that he could milk his reactions to always made it funnier. This was one of the routines he did for most of his performing career ("Guzzler's Gin").

The trouble with children is that there are some who make an indelible impression on you when you first meet them -- and then you don't see them for years -- and when you finally do see them, they surprise you, shock you, impress you or disappoint you.

Some lose the magic they had.  Others increase their magic.

Life is full of such intrigues and mysteries.

And, of course, those who have been around them all those years haven't a clue about any of it!

Lots of boxed sets of TV series I haven't even cracked the plastic on yet. My intentions are good, but then some single film comes in like BATMAN BEGINS or (this week) DARLING LILI, and the boxed sets take a back seat since they are much more time consuming to get through.

THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP is also a favorite.

Do we include shows where there's one tour-de-force performance and the second character is pretty much a foil for the other?  If so, then I'd include HAPPY DAYS, BARRYMORE and Q.E.D.

I happened to get home in time to catch the end of Chicago on NBC.  I guess they showed the cut "Class" scene/song after the movie proper.  Well...  It was interesting to "hear" what lyrics simply got muffled, and which ones got "beeped".  And it was also interesting to see which ones were allowed to get aired - "son of a bitch" "ass" - and which ones were not - "Jesus Christ".

*I was amazed that "shit" got beeped out since that particular four-letter word has been allowed in the past.  -And, heck, it was being shown at 10:57PM.  -Who exactly would be watching anyway?

Meanwhile, "Chicago" only started here 21 minutes ago.  On one of our many local PBS stations, KQED, MGM's classic "Pride and Prejudice" is airing.

Do you recognize this gangster?  He is Ben Welden, Keith's cousin and the twin to Keith's brother.

Oh, my goodness, of course I recognize him. He did quite a few SUPERMAN episodes, and also seemed to be in lots of shows in the 1950s as a supporting player. Thanks for the info.

Well, I spent part of the evening with ZIEGFELD FOLLIES (the musical segments of which "This Heart of Mine" is my favorite). The designs of this film really fun the gamut, and it's so much fun just to study as a time piece for another era of moviemaking.

Another thing I noticed is that Lucille Bremer wears heels in her dances with Astaire, so she must have been a very tiny woman. Most dancers like Charisse and Vera-Ellen had to wear flatts because they would have towered over Fred. Judy Garland certainly wore heels in their dances because she wasn't even five feet tall.

I watched all of the SUPERMAN episodes which contained commentaries. I have to say the enthusiasm of the two men who provide the commentaries (each man does two shows apiece) is ingratiating, but they don't offer much solid information. For example, they don't mention Rhys Williams in "The Unholy Three" even though he was a well respected character actor with some impressive credits like THE CORN IS GREEN and THE BELLS OF ST. MARY'S. Sarah Patten's name was mentioned in "The Haunted Lighthouse," but not that she was tested and almost played Aunt Em  in THE WIZARD OF OZ.

I probably watched six or seven episodes total today, and all of them looked good to great (in "The Haunted Lighthouse," it's so sharp and clear you can see shadows on the seascape backdrop) except "The Stolen Costume" which looks worse than any episode of it I ever saw broadcast. You can never convince me Warners didn't have a better print of that episode than the one in this boxed set. It is almost unwatchable with not an inch of any frame not covered in dirt, scratches, and damage. Really abominable quality. Everything else, though, looks so good that it seems churlish to complain too much.

I didn't get to any more of the Val Lewton films today, but tomorrow, I hope to get at least two more watched. I'd also like to watch SUPERMAN AND THE MOLE MEN since I've never seen the feature version of the story. That should be fun.

Have thus far watched two count them two motion pictures on DVD and am going to try for number three.  I'm in the mood for something sweet - I've been a VERY good boy today, food-wise - so far, under eight hundred calories.

We also didn't mention that the new 3-disc WIZARD OF OZ deluxe edition comes out next week. That's another pre-order I'm waiting to arrive.

Alas, I'll still have to keep my laserdisc ULTIMAYE OZ box because the John Fricke commentary on the new DVD set is going to be intercut with comments from other OZ participants. On the laserdisc, he talked for the entire running time of the film and never runs out of interesting comments and commentary.

THE ROBE is another of those films that I haven't watched in a long time, but I was impressed with the way it looked on the widescreen TV that last time I watched it.

Hmmm...time for a second Bollywood movie for the weekend...

JAANI DUSHMAN (2002)

A young college gal is attacked by some college guys...then she discovers that she is the  reincarnation of a magical cobra who was in love with another magical cobra several hundred years ago...then college students start dying in horrible ways.

30 minutes into this I can see that it is gonna be cheesy...but, it has several actors that I like and the soundtrack is one of my favorites...and it actually is sort of fun (even if the actors playing the college students are WAY too old for their roles)!! LOL!

I'm thinking of watching my Criterion laserdisc of "Singin' in the Rain" tonight.  I've heard that there is a terrific commentary on it by Ronald Haver.

That commentary taught me that Lana Turner is in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN.

Hmm... Not a bad episode of "SNL".  Catherine Zeta-Jones was the host(ess).  A couple of laugh out loud moments here and there.

*For those West Coast viewers...  Be sure to stick with the show through the first 20 minutes.  The "Dancers Party" skit made me smile.

Can one of you research-oriented folks ascertain if Whatever Happened To Baby Jane opened at the Wilshire Theater in LA exclusive or if it also played the Pantages?  Variety may have the answer.

This "Dawg" is finally caught up. I actually am a Dawg, having attended the University of Georgia, nickname Bulldogs ("Dawgs" in hillspeak). I am also indeed "out of the closet,"or "closets" is more like it, but only after having decomissioned a good number of shirts and clothing items that I have been holding onto for years. New clothes purchased. Many things tossed that I hadn't worn in many moons.

Our closets are now a bit cleaner, but now we gotta find a place to take all these clothes to for donation.

Tomovoz was the song "Lonely Boy" by Marni Nixon's son Andrew Gold, a hit in Australia? Not to be confused with the Paul Anka song. This song tells the tale of a kid who grows bitter when his parents have another kid.

But her voice may have been dubbed by Kay Starr.

Not in Melbourne but it charted in Sydney I think. It appeared on one of those "20 Happening Hits" discs.
