"How can I be overdrawn when I have all these checks left?"  James Thurber, from A Thurber Carnival, the cast album of which is now playing on Ye Olde iPode.

"Why didn't they repeal inhibition while they were at it?"

"So she said to him, why don't you get dressed and go to pieces like a man?"

"She's always living in the past, and now she wants to get a divorce in the Virgin Islands."

"Well, if I called the wrong number why did you answer the phone?"

He went into the bedroom, where his wife was sleeping.  "There's a unicorn in the garden," he said.

She opened one unfriendly eye and said, "The unicorn is a mythical beast."

Good morning, all!  There's been no word whatsoever from the California office, and I am assuming that we have indeed lost the lease and returned to Square One.  This has been depressing me since last Thursday when everything concerning the lease suddenly went from fact to question, and I think it's time for me to look for other work, much as I like my colleagues. I don't know what I'll find, since no one's beating down my door at the moment, but all of us in this office angst deserve better treatment than we're getting.

This morning I have more notes to transcribe and some adjustments to continue in my reports.  After that, the NYPL.

TOD:
BEST: The Taming of the Shrew, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf
   WORST: Cleopatra, Boom

I just recently cited STRAIGHT TIME as one of the more underrated films of its decade; Hoffman's performance is exceptional.

TOD:
Best:  WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?, THE MIRROR CRACK'D, NATIONAL VELVET, SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH (TV), SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER, RAINTREE COUNTY.
Worst: ASH WEDNESDAY, X, Y AND ZEE, BOOM.
Middle ground:  SECRET CEREMONY and A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC.

There is a lot of rehearsal and backstage footage from HERE'S LUCY on the HL boxed DVD set that was released a few years ago.

It is very interesting to hear Lucy tell Burton how to read a line and where to stand.

I think I'm going to sneak out and go to Staples to get the forms to make my own business cards.  I have some on order, but it just occurred to me it's really stupid to go to this conference and not have cards to hand out.    I'll just put "Opening in July" or something on them so everyone knows they are temporary cards and not my real ones.

I've never been a huge fan of Elizabeth Taylor's acting, lovely though she may be...Fav Burton's would be BECKET, HAMLET, VIRGINIA WOOLF.

Worst for the pair is HAMMERSMITH IS OUT.  Though it's great fun hearing Burton honk:  "Let me out.  I'll make you rich and strong.  Strong and rich."

Thank you one and all for the good vibes regarding my back. Unfortunately, it continues to get worse, not better.

Sorry to hear that, DR TCB. My own back problems were helped greatly by the addition of magnesium supplements. Two excellent books on the subject of magnesium: The Miracle of Magnesium by Carolyn Dean, MD (very easy read) and Mildred Selig's book (can't recall exact title). Selig is considered the expert on magnesium. I found both books on Amazon.

Hope you find some relief!

But alas, it is indeed another day of "nose to the grindstone!"  UGH!!!  I need time to hassle my dear and lovely Mikey Barnum..... I need time to rave about all of dear Larry's talent, wicked sense of humor, inspirational orchestrations, and wisdom in so many diverse areas, .......and I need time to unmercifully pick on dear and sweet Jose, and threaten him with chastisement of frightening proportions......

But,..... I have to get ready to head out of the house again very shortly for a long day at the grindstone.

Good morning all... Speaking of James Thurber..my favorite story is The Night the Bed Fell.

Always one of my favorite stories to teach to my eighth graders. The ninth graders (and eighth graders taking advanced English) got "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty").

Tom Ewell is one of my least favorite actors, but he reads "Bed" beautifully on the A THURBER CARNIVAL cast album.

I have a problem with his books: everyone he claims is gay or lesbian is dead, and since that's the case, do I really believe all the quotes and anecdotes are accurate or his "version"?  If I trusted him more as an author, perhaps.

Yeah, I was wondering about this author's accuracy--I never read any of his other work.  But it's cheap enough in price and will hopefully provide some tawdry beach reading before Harry Potter comes out.

I've said on many occasions here and elsewhere that Burton's performance in WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF is for me the greatest performance ever not to have won an Oscar.

Least favorite Burton performances are EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC and THE MEDUSA TOUCH.

I love Taylor in A PLACE IN THE SUN, GIANT, VIRGINIA WOOLF, and CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF.

I recently rewatched the second half of CLEOPATRA, the part I had always disdained, and I found it much more involving and Burton's performance much better than I remembered it being. I think Taylor's work is brittle and not very good throughout the film.

I have already received my shipping notice from Amazon (and to get the Free shipping I added DVDs of Godsprell and JC Superstar (Special Edition)

My current dilemma is if/how to order S&V - maybe if I pakaged it with an Ann Coulter book it would be a "viewpoint" neutral package.

Oh maybe that's a bit harsh :) I could add a DVD of The Fountinhead, that might be more fair and balenced.

Wait - S&V is so over-priced it qualifies for free shipping all by its lonesome :(

I think my favorite musical number was actually CURTAINS.  For the Tonys i don't really care for solo or duets. I like to see big splashy all out group numbers.

I think my favorite speech was probably Julie White. She was so surprised (as was i since everywhere i read said either eve or angela would win). I also thought mary louise wilson was great!

FOX 411 (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,281040,00.html)

Quote
Meanwhile, NBC is dealing with nailing down the salaries of Chris Noth and Vincent D’Onofrio, stars of “Law and Order: Criminal Intent.”

The show was saved from the chopping block because producer Dick Wolf promised to hold down costs. His solution was a salary freeze, meaning no raises this season as he steers the show into its new deal: the shows are being shown on USA Networks first, followed by a run on NBC.

Noth and D’Onofrio, sources say, will likely take the freezes in pay and stick it out. “They make $350,000 each an episode, which comes to $3,850,000 a year," a source said. "Not bad.”

The actors also each appear in only 11 episodes, and the work schedule is a total of 88 days a year.

Have you NEVER seen "A Place in the Sun"?  If you had, how could you forget

Angela (Taylor): I love you, too. It scares me. But it is a wonderful feeling.
George (Clift): It's wonderful when you're here. I can hold you. I can, I can see you. I can hold you next to me. But what's it gonna be like next week? All summer long? I'll still be just as much in love with you. You'll be gone.
Angela: But I'll be at the lake. You'll come up and see me. Oh, it's so beautiful there. You must come. I know my parents will be a problem, but you can come on the weekends when the kids from school are up there. You don't have to work weekends. That's the best time. If you don't come, I'll drive down here to see you. I'll pick you up outside the factory. You'll be my pickup. Oh, we'll arrange it somehow, whatever way we can. We'll have such wonderful times together, just the two of us.
George: I am the happiest person in the world.
Angela: The second happiest.
George (filled with guilt and repression, confides): Oh, Angela, if I could only tell you how much I love you, if I could only tell you all.
Angela (comforting him with a breath-taking, intimate reply, while pulling him closer to her): Tell mama, tell mama all.

Have you ever seen a Richard Burton movie?

Oh, I have seen Richard Burton movies, but have no favorite performances to list for the TOD. He never made any kind of impression on me...he ain't no Ken Clark, that is for sure.

To the tune of the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil"

Hmmmm....I thinking more along the lines of BS&T's "Lucretia McEvil"....or, better still, ELPs' "Karn Evil No. 9"...all 3 impressions.

Censors Asleep at the Wheel?

Last week's court ruling that the FCC could not bar the use of "fleeting expletives" during live telecasts may have resulted in a more relaxed atmosphere in the control booth during Sunday night's CBS coverage of the Tony Awards. The upshot was that when actor John Mahoney departed from the script and used the profanity "goddamn," it went out over the air, despite a five-second time delay. It was followed by a second or two of dead air, "as though someone were slow on the button," as Broadcasting & Cable observed on its website. The offending word was later removed from the West Coast feed. "It was an unwelcomed adlib," a CBS spokeswoman told the trade publication.

So glad we were able to spare the sensibilities of the west-coasters.

Hi, my name is Mz Karen and I used to be a HHW gratuitous poster many, many postings ago...You thought you were rid of me, but I'm BAAA-CKKK! And I expect, no, make that demand, a flurry of frenzied postings welcoming me back -- postings like "Mz Karen, my darling, youhave been missed terribly"  "Things were never the same once you left us"  "Don't you ever pull that stunt again" etc., etc.

I honestly thought that was a "gag" - i.e., they meant for him to say that and get bleeped, except that the timing was slightly off.  Coming as it did after the sight gag of the chandelier.  But I'll have to go back and take another look.

Tuesday greetings!  I had to be to work an hour earlier than usual today and I may get to leave 2 hours earlier than usual - what a deal!

On my walk to and from my early meeting at the YWCA, I saw some more City Life sculptures (http://www.downtowndayton.org/experience/citylife/index.html) - Stormy Weather, Crossing Paths, Unconditional Surrender, and Second Hand News.  I'd been wondering why we didn't have one in front of the library, but I guess it's because they don't have one named Bottom Feeder.

Those are great sculptures, DR Ginny!

I have had one of those mornings when everything clicked. I snuck out and went to Staples to get the cards to print, well as I was standing in Staples thinking that I should just go ahead and buy my phone system there today my cell rang....the phone company asking if they can come and install my phones this morning.  I said "Sure"  Bought the phones and went to the new office where the office manager gave me my keys!

Now the phones are in and working. Cool.  As I left and was walking right across the street from the print shop, my cell rang and it was the printers saying they had all my proofs ready - so I crossed the street and we discovered that the phone number on everything was wrong.  They had already sent the announcements up to their shop to be printed, but wonder of wonders they hadn't started them yet!  Whew!

And while I was there I told them I was going to make up some cards and they said they would run a quick 100 for me this afternoon so I have them to take with me tomorrow!  Wow! I like it when things work like this.

AIR FORCE CONSIDERED GAY 'LOVE BOMB' AGAINST ENEMIES (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,281217,00.html)

Quote
The Air Force on Tuesday confirmed a report that in 1994 a military researcher requested $7.5 million to develop a non-lethal "love bomb" that would chemically alter the state of mind of enemy troops and make them want to have sex with each other rather than fight.

Wasn't a prototype tested in San Francisco?

DR MissKaren - So, what's your DR and DR Cason up to lately?  Has his Cabaret opened and/or closed yet?  Have you seen it?  Just wondrin'.

Boo-Key has been most swamped.  "Cabaret" opens the last weekend of this month, and then runs the following two weekends in July.  He actually has a rehearsal tonight.  A couple of weeks ago I was in LA and got to see one of their rehearsals.  They were working on several of the musical numbers -- and I was real impressed with all the choreography.  The cast is a group of 20-somethings who all seem most talented.  The "Money" number was awesome so I look forward to seeing the entire show. He is juggling rehearsals between "Cabaret" and "Bukowsical" (he's the understudy for all the male parts), which will go to the Fringe Theatre Festival in NYC in August (with some previews at the King King in LA before it heads east). They made it sound like he'd get to do one of the shows in LA, and possibly one in New York cause one of the cast has a wedding to attend during one of the festival weekends, so if they get booked to perform the day/night of the wedding, Cason's in.

Good Afternoon!

Ahhh... Nothing like 50 minutes of circuit weight-training and some yoga to get one's blood flowing - and one's muscles pumping.  :)

*I think I've actually come across a dumbbell workout that I actually like doing, and that has enough alternate exercises to keep me interested - and that aren't too complicated, well, that I don't have to constantly think about (proper form, stance, etc.)  In fact, I was going to stop after my third circuit, but I went ahead and went for the suggested/highly recommended fourth circuit.  Plus, I added a set of lunges and push-ups at the end - which are also an option with this plan.

I thought your dumbbell workout was saying to a cute blonde "My name's Jose" and if he didn't know his own name, dragging him home.

No, that dumbbell workout involves raising one glass of whatever I'm having and three of whatever he's having.

I sometimes turn on the captioning when watching Grey Gardens.  It helps when Little Edie is whispering.

My ex-boyfriend is from Pakistan.  Even though he's been in the US for 21 years or so, he still has a little trouble understanding some things.  For his birthday one year, I got him a DVD player and taught him about subtitles on DVDs.  He was VERY happy about that. :)

Back from a delicious lunch with DR JMK who promises to be back on HHW regularly now that his work life is getting less frantic.

We ate at THE RAM which is across the street from Willamette University (where JMK was attending a function). JMK had a yummy looking garden burger (in honor of BK, no doubt) and I had a huge, dripping with grease, garlic, mushroom, and swiss burger piled high with carmelized onions. It was very tasty indeed.

Next came the upcoming DVD release of THE MANY ADVENTURES OF WINNIE THE POOH. This is the 1977 feature release of the three short subject POOH features made in 1966, 1968, and 1974 with some (then) new bridging material and a new coda.

As features, the stories are very gentle with "adventures" maybe suggesting more action than is obviously there. Small children would love the stories, of course, but unlike the Disney animated features which are just as entertaining for adults as they are for children, I find the POOH stories of less interest as an adult. And because the short subjects were made over an 8 year stretch, there are inconsistencies from short to short, especially in the actors voicing Christopher Robin and the size and coloring of some of the characters.

Disney hasn't done anything much to clean up the print used for the transfer, and though it isn't what I would call dirty, there are stray bits of dirt and some definite ghosting around images causing brightness fluctuations that affect the image and cause viewer distraction. More grain than is usual for a Disney animated release, but again, since there has not been any digital clean up, that's not surprising.

I also watched the "making of" featurette which was prepared for the last DVD release of this material which predated the death of Paul Winchell, so he's an active participant.

I did enjoy learning the history behind the the acquisition of the material by Disney in 1961 and the reasons affecting the decision to make the three separate shorts rather than one long feature film.

Wow! Do you have great luck or some special magic that makes these things come together for you? In any case, it's great to see.

At 2PM it was a bright sunny spring afternoon, so I decided to take Fletcher for a walk - we could meet Woody have way home from work, and Fletcher needs the exercise.

Well, about half way there, Fletcher had had enough of exercise:

A few moments later the sky clouded over and it started to drizzle. With much effort, and another rest stop, I got us to the back door of the market loading dock when Noah's storm hit with a vengeance - I love huddling on a stairway under a metal roof while the lightening flashes all about >:(

I tied Fletcher to a railing to go see what was up with Woody. It seems a co-worker had called in saying she would be delayed, so Woody was on indefinite hold. I went back and fetched Fletcher and took him to the store front to wait.

Fletcher waited patiently:

Sorry to hear that, DR TCB. My own back problems were helped greatly by the addition of magnesium supplements. Two excellent books on the subject of magnesium: The Miracle of Magnesium by Carolyn Dean, MD (very easy read) and Mildred Selig's book (can't recall exact title). Selig is considered the expert on magnesium. I found both books on Amazon.

Hope you find some relief!

TCB, they might be worth trying.  I found them helpful for a chronic problem I have, but the pills are too darn large for me to swallow (had to chew them :P) , and they tend to bother my stomach.

TCB, have you tried magnets? Before you think I'm some new age wacko, we started using these when DH had a bad case of tendonitis. Nothing helped...cortisone shots, etc. and he was desperate. He mentioned it to someone at our coffee shop, and a guy in line who was a Nikken distributor said "here, try this" and put an elbow wrap and magnet on Greg's elbow. It relieved his pain after a few minutes and he became a big believer in it. They make back belts that hold larger magnetic pads. This helped my mom so much that we decided to become "dealers", so we could buy their stuff at cost. We only buy for us and friends and family and DH has no interest in pursuing it as a business, but if you're interested in trying it, he could get you something at his cost.

Has anyone ever seen the RB movie "Villain"? It was based on the Kray brothers...(or the Pirhana Brothers, for any Monty Python fans out there.) It's a very lurid and unplesant film, directed by the first director I ever worked for, Michael Tuchner. (Also kind of an unpleasant guy...)

The plus of working on that first film was that I got to work with G.W. Bailey, a.k.a. Lt Provenza.

He's going to be doing a radio shot here in Atlanta tomorrow morning, so we'll be tuning him in. I think Kyra will be doing some late night talk shows, too.

It's coming down to the wire!

False advertising, but thank you!

I actually wanted to post my favorite photo of myself---even younger, but with my ancient cat when he was young, too. But even though it was 12K, the site said it was too big. So I'll settle for my Marie Osmond look...

Edi, the picture can easily be reduced in size...even more easily than it was to cut your hair (which was not difficult, at all). :) If you want, just e-mail it to me and I can do it.

The Hollywood High School Alumni are currently working with Hollywood Heritage, a preservation group, to have the high school library named a historic landmark and be protected from the hands of the landgrabbers.  The library has been on site since 1912, and is one of the oldest buildings in Hollywood. In this picture taken during the Hollywood High School Alumni's 100th anniversary, the president of Hollywood Heritage Mark Wannamaker,   ( head of Bison Archives ), and cheif preservationist and lawyer Robert Nudleman ( one of the seven major forces to save Hollywood in Los Angeles magazine's Hollywood issue ) show off a panorama picture of Hollywood in 1913 in which the only remaining buildings are the school library, Yamashiro, and The Magic Castle.

The Air Force on Tuesday confirmed a report that in 1994 a military researcher requested $7.5 million to develop a non-lethal "love bomb" that would chemically alter the state of mind of enemy troops and make them want to have sex with each other rather than fight.

Yep, finally released two hours after I was supposed to get off work.

My schedule gets crazier and crazier.

I was originally supposed to have today off.  Nope, schedule got changed, today was added, they needed someone to watch over the self-checkout lanes.

I have tomorrow off.

Thursday, I was supposed to go in at six AM.  That got switched - the gal who works the night shift has to have some time off for family business, so I'm going in at four in the morning!  (I expect that der Brucer will still be up at that hour, so he can get me up and drive me to work.)

Friday is more normal, a six hour shift.

But for Saturday, I've been asked to come in another couple of hours early, covering for another checker who will be out.

This brings me up to a 44-hour workweek.

This is what we call semi-retired.

Today I finished the first Donald Strachey mystery - DEATH TRICK. Because I enjoyed the two movie versions that were broadcast on here! and then later on DVD (where I saw them; naturally no Bible Belt cable system is going to carry an all-gay network), I decided I'd read some of the series that haven't yet been filmed. This oine was written in 1979, so it was pre-AIDS, and there's a lot of sleeping around. Donald is dating Timmy but they haven't become a couple yet. The mystery is not quite as good as either of the two books already filmed (obviously why they were chosen instead of this first one).

Today in my Gold Box at Amazon, another of the Strachey books was there for a discount - ICE BLUES, so I bought it. Just got the shipping notice that it shipped early this evening. I might have it by the weekend. Hooray!

Apart from two overly grainy scenes, the video is sharp in that three dimensional way, clear of artifacts, and with sensually rich Technicolor, very deeply saturated.

I think the film is a pinch too long (maybe that song that Martin and Nelson duet on could have been cut, though it's beautiful singing), but just when you think nothing's happening, something does. The action set pieces are so much fun to watch. And Walter Brennan chews up the scenery like nobody's business making his every appearance loads of fun.

Nope, but I loved the film "The Krays!"

Me, too. Gary and Martin Kemp came to our Video Music Channel to promote the film, and Spandau Ballet was also on tour so we interviewed them as an actors that day and then went to see the band that night. (I think they had just reunited at that point.) Good concert! Cute boys!

I don't think I have a favorite Liz Taylor film, but probably her finest performance was in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. As for Mr. Burton he made more crap that good films but Ann of a 1000 Days, Beckett, Equus, ...Woolf and believe it or not Where Eagles Dare.

His biggest embarasment? Playing himself on The Fall Guy

Since I missed most of THE CLOSER Season 2, I started watching it tonight.  I was so happy to see my old friend Kevin Kilner, even if he were the killer!

Wow---he looks really different from his role in the show. That was a heart-rending last scene he had in the electronics room!

I don't remember if anyone mentioned THE ROBE, but I thought Burton was very good in that. And I was going on and on about his work VIRGINIA WOOLF, but THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD is also quite brilliant.

Sorry, dear reader MattH, but Rio Bravo is a travesty and I don't care how sharp it is.  Yes, it has deeply saturated color but it does not in any way resemble the deeply saturated IB Technicolor prints - this rather sick DVD is orange.  If you like deeply saturated orange, it's a perfect DVD.  Unfortunately, there should be blue skies where there are only white or brown skies, and if you think that skin tones should be the same exact orange as shirts and walls, well, it's a shame that you don't know what it's supposed to look like.  I haz spoken.

Didn't we use the expression YEAR OF MAGICAL DRINKING here on HHW the other night when we were coming up with Tony-related foodstuffs and drinkstuffs?  Now the expression seems to have caught on and I'm seeing it on another site.

Trendsetters, that's what HHW-ers are.

And speaking of closings, there was an article in yesterday's NY Times about all the darkened marquees this summer on Broadway.

As the Cheering of Tony Night Fades, Broadway Still Faces a Summer of Closings (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/12/theater/theaterspecial/12dark.html?_r=1&ref=theater&oref=slogin)

*And it's accompanied by a picture of those red plaid pants.  -Which upon closer inspection, seem to be of a royal and/or military order.

I'm currently sipping some fancy-schmancy bed-time/calming herbal tea.  It tastes OK, but when I first opened the canister.... Whoa!  It has valerian root in it, consequently, it has a little "off" smell to it.  But, again, it doesn't taste off.  (whew!)

Just read that 1950s actress Mala Powers died yesterday in Los Angeles of leukemia. She was 76.

I was never a big fan of hers, but she did make some fun movies and seemed to pop up on TV a lot.

Some of use (well, me and JRand56) will remember Mala from the films THE UNKNOWN TERROR or THE COLOSSUS OF NEW YORK...while others are more likely to recognize Ms. Powers from the film Cyrano de Bergerac  opposite Jose Ferrer.

Tonight I went to see a student written staged reading at Plaza De La Raza in Lincoln Park. A beautiful old building now houses a community center for the neighborhood. The title of the piece was "If Only You Knew", and it involved  stories of gang life that all ended in hope.

Interesting photo!

Love history and thanks for sharing... Good luck with your wrok with them.

Gotta love when that happens!! I am glad things are coming together foryou Cilla!! BEst wishes on your new venture...
