TOD

An awful debility,
A lessened utility,
A loss of mobility
Is a strong possibility.
In all probability
I'll lose my virility
And you your fertility
And desirability,
And this liability
Of total sterility
Will lead to hostility
And a sense of futility,
So let's act with agility
While we still have facility,
For we'll soon reach senility
And lose the ability.

I am NOT staying up till the cows leave home...not tonight.  Nossirree.  I've got me some things I need me to do later on this a.m.

I've got to get me some shut-eye.

I can't be just sitting here posting.

Not with all that fine lowing coming from the barn.  Just puts you right to sleep, if you listen to it close enough.

I'm up and I'm the only one in the jernt!

It's not listed on the Calendar but today is Music Guy's Birthday!

Happiest of Days to one of the happiest people in Arizona.

DRs Laura and Sandra, make sure he has plenty of cake  ;)

I'll be leaving for Long Island soon for our day of fun with the Brits.

We had a great meal at East of Eighth last night. Two people had the grilled salmon, one had pecan salmon, one had meatloaf and I had grilled shrimp. For dessert I had pineapple fruit crisp, two had pumpkin bread pudding one had tiramisu and one had creme brulee. We laughed and talked and laughed (but not about anyone here). It was a great evening.

See ya tomorrow!

Good morning, all!  DR Ben, thanks for the MusicGuy birthday alert.

Tom Murray is flying in from Chicago this morning and we begin editing the new score to THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER.  Toyland will always be Toyland, but today it's Cnderella time, and I wish the music were as good as Toyland's.

DR Jose, I ordered the Dvorak gypsy songs on a recording "Folk songs" by Anne Sofie von Otter.  I have the Brahms Zigeunerlieder on her album of Brahms' songs.  What I did not know was that Brahms originally wrote them, like the Liebeslieder Waltzes, for vocal quartet, and I found a Chandos recording of the original choral version.  For all you DRs who know the Liebeslieder terms from Sondheim's A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC and don't know the Brahms original, they are quite beautiful, and they've been recorded by full chorus as well as quartet, which is how I prefer them sung.  Sondheim's idea for A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC came from Balanchine's choreography of the waltzes for City Ballet. where the quartet stands around the piano and sings while the waltzes are danced.

TOD:  I must think!  (a PETER PAN reference)

Good morning to dear Esteemed, multi-faceted, leisurely, and studly BK -  (with or without a link-sausage!) --

I'm not trying to be too E & T, but have just had some work things to get through over the past few days.  I'll be checking in here, on and off, at various times through the day... so don't think the Living Room can get too wild or rowdy.

Good Morning!

Well... Since I had to get up early this morning, at least it was "nice" knowing that the property manager also had to get up early too.  Well, I had to call her once the boiler/radiator guy got here so that he could have access to the basement/boiler room.  Of course, the first time I called her, it went to voicemail.  So then I texted her.  A few minutes later...ring... "I'm sending Sammy (the handyman) over to let them in."

...And they just replaced the valve, and now they're heading back down to the basement to turn the boiler back on...

...And I suspect that I'm going to head back to bed for a bit once they've gone their merry way.  I need just a touch more sleep.

DR elmore - I prefer the quartet version of the Brahms' too.  When I was in college, a couple members of the voice faculty fomed "The Richmond Vocal Arts Society" - which was basically Richmond's version of New York's Festival of Song, Steven Blier's group.  They always had wonderfully programmed programs, and the Brahms - both the Zigeunerlieder and the Liebeslieder Waltzes - were staples of their repertoire.

-I'll have to Czech ;) which recording(s) of the Gypsy Songs I have in my library - which will be up here in a few days!

Don't you just hate that actress?  I can't figure which of her commercials is worse: the flaming zero or the standup comic.  She's probably a lovely lady and doing just what the idiot sponsor wants.

On another gripe: the morons at Broadwayworld.com are bitching at Juliana Hansen because she  hasn't revealed to the viewers of "You're the One That I Want" that she's more than an office worker.  As if NBC isn't controlling everything we know about the contestants.  Half of those members are complete morons.  The rest of us are only half moron.

On a quasi-related note... I still remember a "phase" I went through where I would just randomly exclaim, "Chinco!"  I have no idea where it came from, why I started doing it, why I would continue to do it, and why it just stopped being a part of my vocabulary one day.  As the Amish would say - at least in Plain and Fancy - It wonders me.

In something of a change from the norm, the ladies' long program at the National Figure Skating Championships will be shown live this afternoon rather than tonight. For the last decade or more, the ladies' final has been a prime time event on ABC. I suspect ratings have dropped to such a degree that ABC has returned the ladies' event to an afternoon slot.

The men don't even get ABC network coverage. Their final will be broadcast on ESPN2 tonight at 11 p.m EST. It's being broadcast live as well, and since it's taking place in Spokane, Washington, that accounts for the late East Coast hour. West Coast folks can watch it in prime time. I'll be recording it to watch tomorrow.

Not to cool down.

Watched DON'T KNOCK THE ROCK (1956) last night. Fun movie and it is very interesting to see all of those rock and roll acts on screen...Bill Haley and the Comets, Little Richard (who I don't care for much, but I have to admint he was quite entertaining), The Applejacks (?), etc....and the dancing was fantastic! I even spotted one of my interviewees, Lynette Bernay, as one of the dancers in Bill Haley's first musical number.

The Sex Worker's Art Show tour last night was...unique.  I had no idea what to expect and it was ecclectic, to say the least.  One woman was from Japan and spoke very little English.  I don't think I could even describe what she did because it was just so unusual.  She is the only one who got completely nude (otherwise, when the strippers stripped, they had pasties on).  None of the men took anything off. :(

;)
Title: Re:WITH FURTHER ADO
Post by: George on January 27, 2007, 09:55:23 AM
But for the most part, the evening was entertaining...but LONG!  There were only eight performers but the show was three hours!  There were a couple of strippers (one woman was small and skinny and very sultry the other woman had a large, curvy body, great talent and everyone LOVED her!...she was very good), a couple of readings by two of the men, an a capella rap song and some interaction with the audience.  The only performer who wasn't very good was this one very skinny black man who performed a couple of songs that he wrote.  His lyrics were very difficult to understand and he sang the melody in falsetto (he was introduced as a countertenor) and just played it in unison on his keyboard in octaves.  It was really quite boring.

Afterwards I got something to eat, came home and went to bed.  Now I need to go to work to make up some time and finish invoicing so that the bills can be paid.

It is SOOOOOOO windy here today it's just plain crazy. The weather channel says 40 mph, it's at least that.  So our balmy 18 degrees is a -2 wind chill.

The Siouxland Film Festival is late this afternoon and tonight. It's all shorts, one category by graduate students from across the country and one category for locals (meaning regional, really)  It was a blast last year and they had so many submissions this year that they are showing the almost made the finals at 4:00pm  and the finals at 7:00pm.    I think I'm just going to the finals. It's a lot of shorts and I have much to do

DR der Brucer ~ LOL (really I did -- real loud, too) with your post from late night yesterday's post:

2.  Your baby picture makes you look like a gnome -- a somewhat unsettling little gnome (your parents were saints to keep you and not send you back)
3.  Good, it looks like you have enough hair for me to come snatch you bald-headed the next time you post libelous postings about my parental skills or my darling little Boo-Key.  Don't make me call my lawyer...

Absolutely....CLEAR VISION through the right lens affects the LEFT SIDE of the brain.

And that's the side of the brain this country desperately needs to use nowadays.

There are a few cams set up in Times Square.  I still remember being on a mission one time with Steve.  He had pulled up a couple of the cams on his computer in Richmond, and then called me on my cell.  Then he would try to navigate me to the proper spot so that he could find me in the cam view - and then take a screen shot.  I got plenty of those "Who are you waving it?!?!" looks.  Even from the tourists.  ;)

MBarnum, Miss Hayes was perfectly fine and probably more interesting than Gene Barry.  They have been running BAT MASTERSON and THE RIFLEMAN daily on the Westerns Channel and I must confess the Bat Masterson is really not that good. The show is not nearly as well-written as The Rifleman and I find Gene Barry rather cold andnot particularly interesting.  I remember liking him much better in Burke's Law.

Left Brain

Logical
Sequential
Rational
Analytical
Objective
Looks at parts

Right Brain

Random
Intuitive
Holistic
Synthesizing
Subjective
Looks at wholes

I'm not all all sure we wouldn't benefit from more subjectiveity and looking at the whole.

Looking at the parts, objective cases are heard for adding a piddly number of troups to Iraq and condoning torture.

Looking at the whole, subjective cases are heard for labeling the small troup addition as "Good Money After Bad", and "Delaying the Inevitable" - and torture is never the right answer when viewing he picture as a whole.

Teenagers Who Cooked Puppy Alive Plead Guilty to Animal Cruelty (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,247262,00.html)

Out of respect for Jose's digestion I won't post the details.

As to an appropriate sentence - there are not enough days left in the century.

With our present system, these monsters will be free someday - and we shall surely hear more about them! We really need a system to clearly identify sociopaths and permanently restrict their ability to interact with the public.

Yet kitty stew (in reference to "My Girlfriend in Canada") is OK? :-)

Great. Another story to do our city proud. I think these punks need a taste of their own medicine, not that I condone torture...

It will probably be spun as abusive parenting.

"I'm depraved, on account of I'm deprived"!

I'm sure you're right - Manson and Dahmer were probably the result of abusive parenting. These creatures are 17 and 19 - the damage is done, the damage is pernicious, and probably permanent and irreversible. Society deserves to be protected from the results of abusive parenting; if at times, the children become collateral damage, so be it.

I'm not a religious man, but there seems to be solid objective evidence that there are EVIL people.

Invited the neighbors in

Back from an interesting afternoon of movies, telephone conversations, and figure skating.

The movie was YOLANDA AND THE THIEF. What a beautiful Technicolor print they have! Now, what they need to do is some digital scrubbing to get rid of some pesky artifacts (not that much) and the vibrant neon green reel change markers. But unlike the print of SUMMER HOLIDAY I was watching last night that had what looked like water spotting and a drab look to it, YOLANDA is in generally good shape.

Much superior to the muted color on the videotape I have.

As for the skating, alas, none of the ladies skated up to their potentials. Kimmie Missener, the current world champion, won over Emily Hughes by less than a point, a very, very close final score. Had Emily not fallen on a triple flip, and gotten a one point deduction, she would have won the competition. Alicia Ciszney took third place but won the long program phase of the competition.

Bear with me, my friends.
My old compaq presario kicked the bucket this morning, so naturally I simply had to go shopping.
I've ended up with an HP Pavilion PC, and oy! have I got my work cut out for me. Importing addresses, remembering my favorite websites, collecting all my photo files, yada yada.
I'll be on and off and on and off and lost and alone on some forgotten highway until I master this new media-centric tower sitting before me.

Oh, my accompanist Matt Brown, who is also a computer genius, will be coming over on Sunday evening for what was going to be an evening of music, but now may turn into an evening of removing hard drives and copying files or whatever it is that computer geeks do to old computers when new ones are purchased.

One of my favorite lyrics is a simple one by Ellen Fitzhugh (from the show Herringbone, which Skip wrote with her and Tom Cone):

Strange as it seems.
It's strange as it seems,
And apt to get quite a bit stranger

Back from a long day with me mum. The highlight of the day was of course getting to Royce Hall and finding that the seats next to us were occupied by dear beloved Frank Sele, my stage craft teacher who has his own Organ built into his house. We talked about The Brain and HHS (he is the only teacher who came to support The Brain) and I was very happy! The movie (1924 version of Peter Pan) was beautiful, and Betty Bronson did the character real justice at times, although at times I feel she was too fluttery. Peter Pan is one of my two dream roles- The other being Blanche DuBois. All in good time...

I must say I was shocked at the reaction of the children in attendance. They were annoyed at the fact the actors would not speak out loud and they had to read, and that there was no color. Instead of their parents explaining to them that it was a silent movie, the children were simply told to stay quite and they could have ice cream later if they were good....These children (5-10ish) could not even pay attention and try to figure it out, they would simply ask what was happening in a bored or annoyed tone of voice every 2 minutes. Another comment heard all over the theater was "Thats not how it happen in the cartoon!"

Keith’s uncle good use some vibes even though he is currently out of danger.  He has been in the hospital with blood clots following hip surgery.  It will be awhile before he can return home.

Keith’s aunt could use some “be safe” vibes.  She doesn’t feel comfortable about the area the hospital is located.  She goes to the hospital in the morning and leaves in the afternoon, never staying late.

Good Evening!

Greetings from Fairfax!

The drive down was basically uneventful, and the only traffic I experienced was at the toll booths at the Ft. McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore.  -Due to some ongoing construction, the highway goes from three lanes to 12(!) - at the toll booths.  Of course, not all the toll booths were open, and the signage has not been adjusted according to the new traffic pattern.  Lots of mergin' goin' on.

But I'm here.

As for the heat/radiator situation in my apartment... It was definitely toasty by the time I left this afternoon.  It actually felt almost sauna-like in my room, and the rest of the apartment was quite warm too.  So...  When the repairman was there this morning, he said we might have to crack open a window in order to help control the temp, but I'm wondering now if it's just a matter of the thermostat being readjusted now that all four of the radiators in the apartment are working properly.  Until the property manager sent over the proper repairmen, she just had the handyman adjust the thermostat.  So...  We'll see.

*I'm also not to keen on the blast of steam every 15 to 20 minutes from the valve on my radiator.  Another reason I'm thinking the temp may be set too high now.

But, again, it's nice to have heat.

DR CP - yes Miss Allison made semi regular appearances on the BAT MASTERSON series (and I certainly agree with you about the writing) - she was a love interest of sorts and would show up in saloons in various towns that Bat visited.

She was really good in a couple of episodes of Scott Brady's SHOTGUN SLADE - and BEST on PERRY MASON and 77 SUNSET STRIP.

She played an exotic dancer on an episode of SURFSIDE SIX who had the unlikely name of Lotta Peel.

From the t-watch shelf, I chose M*A*S*H, the movie version, which has been sitting on my shelf for years. However, once I got to the TV, I saw that on the DVR was DIE! DIE! MY DARLING! with Tallulah Bankhead and Stephanie Powers. Of course, I HAD to watch that first.

Boy, Tallu gave it her all. It's a fairly ludicrous script with more holes in the plot than are in Swiss cheese, but she's so cacklingly good that it doesn't matter.

I hadn't seen this since it first came on the CBS Thursday Night Movie eons ago, but it was kind of nice to see it once more. I've had this on my CHristmas list for the last two years, but no one chose to honor me with it, and now I'm glad they didn't since I suspect its replay value is fairly slight.
Title: Re:WITH FURTHER ADO
Post by: Matt H. on January 27, 2007, 08:28:28 PM
Once Tallulah had come to her grisly end, I rewatched the six top ladies final free skate that I had seen this afternoon, but this time I paid a little more attention to all the elements. I really felt Emily Hughes had the best skate overall of the afternoon. I really liked her dynamism. If she had slipped up on a triple flip late in her program, she would have won the competition.

I would like to ask DR Pogue to please extend my sympathies to his friend Larry Drake who had the unfortunate task of appearing in a film thingie (TV or movie gives it too much credit) called "Gryphon" which aired this evening  on the SCIFI Channel. This mess combined amateur hour special effects, sets made of refrigerator boxes painted with fire-sale poster paints and dialog that would have embarassed Ed Wood. How is it possible to package so many really stinkeroo elements in a show that any network dare air?

The company's first convenience outlets were known as Tote'm stores since customers "toted" away their purchases, and some even sported genuine Alaskan totem poles in front. In 1946, Tote'm became 7-Eleven to reflect the stores' new, extended hours - 7 a.m. until 11 p.m., seven days a week.

Especially from Miss Leslie (Daisy Mae) Parrish as Jocie, the senator's daughter.

No dismay from Daisy Mae!

I'd add "no roebuck from Daisy Duck" but that'd be utter nonsense!

I am now very sleepy. I am going to turn off my cell phone so I don't get a phone call very early in the morning like I do on too many Sundays. Good night

Sure would be! Roe doesn't come from buck, and Daisy has no utter.

I just returned from seeing Pan's Labrynth. I was so sleep deprived and the theatre was hot and stuffy and the movie was very graphic, so I fell asleep in the middle of it. When we left, we realized that my DH had turned 50! And a very cute 50 he is, too!

My movie was interrupted by a telephonic call - but I guess I'll try to finish it before writing the notes.  It's quite a bad film - The Mephisto Waltz, but it is amusing on many levels.

I do like the Mephisto Waltz piano piece. It's on my Liszt!

Will we never get to page eleven?  Will I ever finish watching The Mephisto Waltz?

It's not in Wales! It's Labyrinth.

I just received a lovely e-mail from former child actress Sybil Jason (The Little Princess, The Blue Bird, Barnacle Bill) telling me how much she enjoyed my interview with Edith Fellows in this months issue of Films of the Golden Age.

That was very nice of her! She knew Edith way back in the 30s.

When I did a little shopping today I had a sudden craving for Indian food...and since I was only a short drive from Star of India I had me some tasty buffet!

They had something new on the buffet...Curry Goat. It was really good! I had never had goat before. Maybe not as good as possum, but tasty never-the-less.

BK, you should just give up on Mephisto Waltz.

Anymore, if a movie doesn't catch my interest within 10 minutes I go to something else.

Go get a Bollyood, that is what I recommend!

I'm listening to The Painted Veil soundtrack - very pretty, but one theme is very close to something David Shire wrote (I think it's David - maybe it's John Williams).

Kids!  What's the matter with kids today??

;)

(It's also the Topic of the Day. ;D)

~~~Vibes for DR Jane's Keith's Uncle and Aunt!!!~~~
Today, I went to work and got a lot done.  I listened to the second half of Spring Awakinging (I continually got distracted with my work...I hate it when that happens, so I'm definitely going to have to listen to it again, and soon) and Loving Repeating.  Okay, I didn't understand the cubist poetry, or what it is, but I love Stephen Flaherty's music, so that made up for what I didn't get. ;) Otherwise, I quite enjoyed it.
