As to Drowsy:
Ticket sales are way too low for the size of their auditorium, but the audiences are loving the show. I am absolutely certain, however, that they're missing too many details due to the less than satisfactory quality of the amplification...which I simply don't understand.
I am also sorry to report that, contrary to my impressions earlier in the week, they never had any intention of NOT taking a real intermission, so we have this nice long first act, a forced intermission (with the wonderful Act 2 opening scene "mistake" excised), followed by a very short second act. I've asked around, and I have the impression that most schools take an intermission, apparently because they're loathe to give up concessions sales, and, really, one-act musicals kind of aren't in their (and their audience's) wheelhouse.
I don't know about other productions. The community theeder one I saw in 2019 took no intermission, left the material uncensored (though I have no memory as to whether the "Negro" line was there), was beautifully produced, and I'd give anything to be able to see it again. It was performed in an attractive and comfortable cabaret-seating venue, which was perfect for this show and for Man in Chair's proximity to the audience. Also in that respect, I can't help but imagine that DR Jrand73's production was one not to be missed.
