Well, you've read the notes, the notes were scary, and now it is time for you to post until the scary cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: OMNIFIC!
-
Happy Birthday DR FJL.

As promised, the new Kritzerland title. It's BIG. You know the drill - if you'd like to pre-pre order it it's 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping directly to paypal using our paypal address of kritzerland at adelphia dot net.
IT MUST EAT YOU TO LIVE!
Kritzerland is proud to present a world premiere limited edition CD release:
EARTH VS. THE SPIDER
Music Composed and Conducted by Albert Glasser
Yes, we’re back with the soundtrack to another classic Mr. BIG film, Bert I. Gordon’s 1958 shocker, Earth vs. the Spider. Nobody did it quite like Mr. BIG, especially in his early films. It was a different world back then – a young man with a dream could come to Hollywood and get lucky. He could be in the right place at the right time and suddenly and instantly fulfill his dream of becoming a filmmaker. That’s the way it was with Mr. BIG. He made a string of classic horror B-movies – The Cyclops, Beginning of the End, The Amazing Colossal Man (and its sequel, War Of The Colossal Beast), Attack Of The Puppet People, then, later, Food Of The Gods and Empire Of The Ants. His films, especially his early ones, have an innocence and joy about them that is really fun and Earth vs. the Spider is prime Mr. BIG.
Right from the beginning, Mr. BIG found a composer for his films whose music was just as deliriously wonderful as Mr. BIG’s films. Albert Glasser was one of the most prolific B-movie composers in history. He scored hundreds of movies and TV shows. He joined Mr. BIG on his second film, Beginning Of The End, and did every BIG picture up through The Boy and the Pirates. His score for Earth vs. the Spider is Glasser at his best. It’s just a perfect genre score, beginning with his grand main title, complete with its wailing theremin. His music pulses through most of the film, propelling it from one scene to the next with suspense music, chase music, mutant spider music – it’s classic B-movie horror music, the kind that anyone who grew up in the 1950s will instantly recognize.
It’s so pleasing to finally bring some Albert Glasser to CD, and also pleasing to continue our trip down memory lane with the films of Mr. BIG – Bert I. Gordon. Gordon and Glasser – it was a match made in B-movie heaven.
This CD is mastered from Mr. Glasser’s own 1/4” tape – it’s the complete score as he wrote it – in the film the score is edited and moved around and has repeated cues – we present every note of music he wrote for the film, in mono sound, as recorded.
This release is limited to 1000 copies only. The price is $19.98 plus shipping.
CD will ship by the third week of – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early). To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

I am watching our High School Age production of HMS PINAFORE from 1985....sad to see some of those no longer with us.....and the theatre itself has changed so much.....
Still one of my favorite shows....the kids were great....we used grade school through high school age performers....
I guess it's my favorite G/S score.....but since it's really the only one I have ever worked on, I guess I need more experience before I proclaim it a favorite.
First post after MR BK .... Huzzah!

ORDERED....
Earth Vee Ess The Spider!!!!

Anyone who loves classic B-movie 1950s horror movie music will love this score.

Last night, DR Vixmom asked:
"I wondered about that but thought perhaps you have to do research on the tecnical aspects of the transfer before reviewing it - I have another question - do you find it difficult to fairly review a movies when the subject matter is not appealing to you personally?"
That is the biggest challenge of reviewing anything. No subject matter is going to appeal to everyone, and one must swallow a lot of swill to sometimes get the tasty treats. But I like to THINK that I'm as fair as the next guy.
Nothing makes me madder than to read a review that starts off "I really hate musicals" (I find that a lot in reviewing nowadays) or "Westerns just aren't my thing." I immediately discount anything the person says, even if it ends up being positive because the writer is deigning to come to the film rather than honestly going in with open, objective expectations.
These Oshima films I'm working with right now. It's a struggle to start each one with enthusiasm since each has been worse than the one before, but I can say with surety that I begin each one really pulling for the director to surprise and delight me. I have one left, and hopefully, they've saved the best for last.

A very happy birthday to one of HHW dearest of people FJL!!!
-
Happy Birthday to DR FJL. Hope you have a great day!
-
Good morning, all! I have a day at Toyland so I will be out of here in the next 15 minutes or so. I hope to be finished up by 2 pm or so, and I'll wander back here to continue identifying McGlinn CDs. I may see a movie tonight with Chris, if we can agree on one.
The news about the bomb scare is really alarming. The only good things is that the perpetrators of yesterday's event were so inept it was discovered in time. I can only hope that all further terrorist activities, and I fear there will be, are performed by people of the same ineptitude.

This is an interesting topic for discussion. I'd be interested to hear what others have to say.
Question: Are there any genres of movies that you dislike so much that you try to avoid them?
For me, it's movies dealing with any sort of substance abuse (e.g. LEAVING LAS VEGAS, THE LOST WEEKEND) or when a pet animal dies (e.g. OLD YELLER, MARLEY & ME, THE YEARLING).
Can't watch 'em.
-
Sunday...............at Indianapolis Raceway Park....................Sunday Sunday SUNDAY!!!!!!
They used to advertise drag racing on the radio like that.....I still remember the commercials - they were quite annoying but very effective.
-
Happy Birthday FJL! I hope you have cake and ice cream. And don't forget to make popcorn.
-
DR DRUXY it's usually performers I avoid rather than subjects.....
Mr Dustin Hoffman - although I have learned here at HHW that he is a nice man in person.
Ms Debra Messing - DR TCB's personal goddess.
And a few others.
I can watch any interesting film on any subject - I also dislike a lot of CGI in any film, it looks too much a video game - the kind that robs my nephews of HOURS of their lives....DAYS even.
I may see AVATAR some day - when I can buy it for $5. I am sure it is enjoyable, but being hit over the head with its marketing campaign is making me resist it....it seems calculated from the beginning to be not so much a movie as a way to shake money out of the pockets of people. And they are not happy with selling someone ONE ticket to it....but they want the REPEAT audience.....onscreen and on home video with NEW EXTENDED NEVER BEFORE SEEN DVD's already being planned.
I think I ended up with four versions of TITANIC by James Cameron. ::)

HAPPY NATAL DAY DR FJL!
(I think you should come to Pittsburgh to celebrate).

Question: Are there any genres of movies that you dislike so much that you try to avoid them?
I don't necessarily avoid them, but, I very rarely dip into war movies - I'm talking about the myriad of films about battles, theaters of war, personality war pix et al.
That said, occasionally, something will come along and take me by surprise: I do like THE LONGEST DAY, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and PATTON.
I've seen PLATOON once.
I've never seen THE GREEN BERETS or SANDS OF IWO JIMA or FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS.
I've seen bits and pieces of BAND OF BROTHERS, which I probably will go back to when I have the time to devote to it episode by episode.
And yet, if I'm going to read historical non-fiction, I always check out the World War II books ( I have read SANDS OF IWO JIMA and FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS).
So, in return, I'll pose a question: Are there any war movies I should be checking out?
-
Happy Fred Day.
I'm sure Toby and Dylan will celebrate as well.
-
As for avoiding personalities, I make it a point to avoid anything featuring the Americanized Mel Gibson.
I find that GALIPOLI and the first ROAD WARRIOR movies are fine experiences.
I believe it is common knowledge on this site that Nicole Kidman basically makes my skin crawl and other than AUSTRALIA, I can't think of a film of hers I would want to see.
Angelina Jolie.
Julia Roberts.
Russell Crowe.
-
THE LONGEST DAY and PATTON are 2 of my favorites, and I really like LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA.
BAT-21, CASUALTIES OF WAR and THE ENEMY BELOW are also very good.
-
DR td,
Criterion is coming out with THE THIN RED LINE on Blu-ray later this year. Keep an eye out for it. It was up for best picture the same year that SAVING PRIVATE RYAN was. Neither won, of course, but both are involving enough to recommend.

I have to really want to see the movie itself if it has Russell Crowe, Mel Gibson or Nicholas Cage in the cast.

Maybe we can recommend movies on any subject, that fellow HHW'ers might have missed for one reason or another.
THREE WISHES with Patrick Swayze......

Good morning!
Even warmer this morning, and my walk was not all that pleasant because of it. I'm wondering how I'm going to deal with the heat and humidity of Southern summers in terms of my walking. I may have to take to the treadmill more this summer as I don't like feeling drained at the end of a walk. I like the feeling of exhilaration but not sweaty exhaustion.
-
I think DR ELMORE sent me a nice version of PINAFORE on CD a couple of years ago.
-
I don't like today's gory, uber-violent horror films. I've had to review some, and they've been torture for me to sit through. At the same time, when it comes time to review them, I bend over backwards to find positive things to say since even they aren't all bad.
-
Today's work project, the last film in the Oshima box set, is THREE RESURRECTED DRUNKARDS. The brief blurb on the box makes it sound like a comedy. That would be novel coming from this director and something I'd like to see: a little lightness and less serious, arty tone.

I also have an embarrassment of riches on the DVR as last night's reruns of NCIS (season premiere), THE MENTALIST (when Patrick gets hit with the baseball), and CASTLE all look like fun revisits. I also have Thursday night's FLASH FORWARD which I have less enthusiasm for.
-
That set looks like ANYTHING GOES!
-
Tonight brings new episodes of THE TUDORS and BROTHERS & SISTERS for me. John Barrowman is back on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, too, so I understand, but as much as I love him, I just can't bring myself to watch this show any more.
-
That set looks like ANYTHING GOES!
It sure does!
-
Another war film I really enjoyed was PORK CHOP HILL with Gregory Peck.
-
There are NO performers out there that I dislike so much that I'd deny myself a look at a movie or TV show I wanted to see because of them. They're never in every second of the show so that leaves plenty of pleasurable things to watch between their appearances. I would never let ANY actor have that much power over my choices.
-
Getting down to Toyland this morning was a chore because the the Times Square mess, but I am here and working on a 1912 show by Victor Herbert.
-
Happy Birthday to DR FJL!!!
-
I'm going to do a little writing now and then head down to get started on my viewing for the day.

Today is "Youth Sunday" at church. I wish I could skip it.

Rocking New Age Religion is the coming thing.....I still remember the Frug Sundays from my younger days.

Howard Shore’s score is long and loud and I’d be hard-pressed to recall a single theme in it.
That's what makes horse racing, bk!
I find each of LORD OF THE RINGS' film scores to be one great achievement after another with very memorable themes for persons, places and things such as The Shire, Isingard, The Ring, Gollum, the returning king, the steward, the gray ships, prayers and fulfillments. I admire how Howard Shore takes his Shire theme and weaves it in and out of all three films, growing darker and bit more dissonant with each installment.
Of the 'songs' written for the films, only Enya's "May it Be" and Annie Lennox' "Into the West" left lasing impressions on me.
I've seen THE LORD OF THE RINGS SYMPHONY live twice, once with Howard Shore conducting (Sissel was the featured vocalist) and again with John Macueri conducting (Billy Boyd, the films' Pippin was featured). Your personal friend Susan Egan has also performed with this touring symphony.
but I certainly wouldn’t put them anywhere near my top films of all time list.
Once again, horse racing! After seeing each of the films theatrically, each one entered a spot in my top ten film favorites.
-
Today is "Youth Sunday" at church. I wish I could skip it.
Young lady, get thee to the sanctuary!

I am missing it and I am very happy!

I warned DR Kerry, so I believe he has other plans this morning.

Good morning from Hollywood!
I went to see Chicago last night. Michelle Williams, who I'm not really familiar with, was out as Roxie. The understudy, whose name I don't remember, was very good. Terra C McLeod was great as Velma. Mary Sunshine and Amos were teriffic. And, of course, our very own Brent Barrett was perfection as Billy Flynn. He held the note in "We Both Reached for the Gun" for what seemed forever! I think the cast was having a good time because the audience was so responsive.
My friend from Fullerton is coming in on the train. We're going to have lunch and then it's back to Chicago. A couple of other friends are joining us at the theatre and then for an early dinner.
-
Happy Birthday, DR FJL!

WELCOME TO THE DARK SIDE, FJL!!!!
The bad news: it's cold and dreary here.
The good news: you're too addle-pated to know and/or care. ;)
-
I reviewed OUT OF AFRICA for Blu-ray.com, Vixmom. Matt--the BD is a flipper, so the DVD version is on the "B-side." I am interested to hear if anyone else experiences the "grinding" noise when the BD side loads. It was really quite loud on the two PS3's I tried it on.
I will say, as I mentioned in my review, I have found *all* home video transfers of OUT OF AFRICA to be pretty ugly looking. The BD just ups the ante. ;)
-
Must prepare for the big choral fest. I will be E&T most of the day.
-
Happy Birthday, Fred! I'd wite A birthday song for you, but I'm not good at that sort of thing. Happy Day!!
-
thanks for the LA CHICAGO report, DR KEVINH.

Is anyone other than me looking forward to the blu-ray of DOCTOR ZHIVAGO on Tuesday?

Happy Birthday Dear FJL ;D ;D ;D ;D

A really beautiful Sunday to everyone.
And good morning. :)
-
Dear George, congrats. 8)

Worked in the yard all day yesterday, it had been fairly neglected. If left on my own, I could become very 1970's all over again. Thank goodness my landlord friends are here in town this week to keep me in check. I want the place to be a 1912 Craftsman style yard, so there will be lots of roses along the picked fence (I think they might have agreed not to put up a 6 foot solid wooden wall later this year) I thought the yard would just be too dark. Private yes, but dark.

hi Sam!
I am off to the Program Committee Meeting to be followed by the Monthly Board Meeting.
Who knows WHAT will happen?

Hi JRand59, enjoy your Sunday.

I just heard on CBS News that police in New York have decided that it wasn't a bomb. As it turns out, friends were trying to light the candles on a friend's birthday cake; and the heat from the candles set off all of the sensors in and around Times Square.
;D

HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR FRED!

I agree, Matt H. Give me an old-fashioned horror film like THE INNOCENTS or THE HAUNTING, or even PSYCHO. I would much rather watch one of those, instead of the hundreds of junk movies that specialize in ways to kill innocent teenagers.
I will make one exception. I do enjoy the first HALLOWEEN. That is a thrill-ride.

Can't watch 'em.
I cannot think of any subject matter that I would completely steer clear of. The closest would be pro-war films, those that glamourise war. That said, if there was a performer in the film that I liked, I would still watch it.
And even though I do not like gore in my movies, oddly enough I love the original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and Herschell Gordon Lewis' 1960s gore fests BLOOD FEAST and 2000 MANIACS.

BK's release of EARTH VS THE SPIDER soundtrack has made me a very happy man!!!!! One of my all time favorite films!

I'm up, I'm up. Another pretty day. And in about fifty minutes I'll be sitting inside addressing. Meanwhile, must put labels on boxes.

NO CLOT VIBES FOR DR GINNY!!!
Sorry about the meds & the twinges.
-
From Bruce:
Apparently, Jane has not been paying attention to the oft-discussed visit - yes, this Friday night will be the visit to Olympia and I hope you can come - we'll all go eat and have a good time.
Did you mean DR Ann? Have you forgotten I can't travel because of my shoulder? If I could travel I would have had to go to my uncle's 90th birthday party. Instead I will be stuck at home wishing I could have gone to at least one of these special events. :(

No, I didn't forget - I was commenting on your response to Ann, which said you knew nothing of date, time, or place. :)

I'm confused & have no recollection of saying that. Did you mean my following post to Ann?
Hi Ann, sorry I can't stay.
'night
I can imagine you read that as say, not stay.

I think it is very unfair that Keith & I had identical procedures done on our nose by the dermatologist, yet I have a big ugly blister while he has nothing.;D
Off for a walk.

Time to leave Toyland and head back uptown. I think I will take a bus and see if we get detoured because of the Times Square megillah.

I gotta tell you.

Packages are addressed and we will go grab a bit of lunch then put postage on them. Also, we're going to try a little experiment this time and not do customs forms on single CD packages. First off, last time at the post office we were complaining (in a fun way) about all that work and one of the guys told us that a lot of people don't fill them out on packages less than an ounce and never have a problem. That coupled with the fact that when I called the USPS a few months ago they told me no forms were necessary on those kinds of packages - so we'll try it this time and see what happens.
-
Thanks Tom. With luck, I shall be there.
-
Sunday afternoon greetings! We are back after a very rainy trip to Lima. I drove the last 60 miles and finally got off the interstate and took the back roads from Dayton.
-
Happiest of birthdays to DR FJL!
-
Oh, look, I brought page 4 from Lima!
-
Thanks to all who provided health vibes. My leg felt much better when I woke up this morning, but I'm still going to call the doctor's office tomorrow to confirm the dosage adjustment that Rob wrote down and to get more details on my test results - he didn't know to ask my INR number.
-
Thanks Tom. With luck, I shall be there.
Will you be bringing my son with you?

I will say, as I mentioned in my review, I have found *all* home video transfers of OUT OF AFRICA to be pretty ugly looking. The BD just ups the ante. ;)
I will be playing it on my Samsung BD-1500, and I'll be sure to give a full report tonight after I have watched it and come back upstairs for my evening surf. I certainly do plan to look at the SD side as well to compare how they look, and I'll likely take the SD Collector's Edition off the shelf to see what that looks like, too. This is going to be an OUT OF AFRICA evening. I suspect I won't get but maybe one of those shows off the DVR watched tonight after I finish with OUT OF AFRICA.
-
When I went down, I began my viewing with last Thursday's episode of CSI which I watched from HD Showcase On Demand. I couldn't record it because I already had two shows recording that I like more than CSI now (SUPERNATURAL and THE OFFICE), but thank goodness for this free On Demand service since many of CBS' shows turn up there a day or two after they air on the network.
I wanted to watch because Gerald McCullough and Larry Sullivan were going to make appearances, and since I like both actors very much, I wanted to check the show out. They each had one scene, sad to say. They're both deserving of more screen time. The show has REALLY slid into a banal gutter in the two years since William Petersen left. There is NO sense of fun or wit with the show any more. They go through their motions and it's all pretty dull. The show had two mysteries this week, and one was VERy easy to solve. The other didn't provide enough clues to enable the audience to play along. Tim Conway was the head guest star.
-
I arrived home all sweaty from carrying a huge shoping bag of orchestra scores back from the office, so I took another bath. I talked to Chris earlier, and we are not seeing a movie; I'm going to meet him at 6:30 for dinner on Tenth Avenue and I'll be home early. Tomorrow morning I've got to be up early for a haircut, then a doctor's appointment for my test results, and a trip to Toyland to wait for a UPS package to be delivered. Tomorrow night's the 50th anniversary performance of THE FANTASTICKS, so I have a long day.
-
While I ate lunch, I watched the rerun of THE MENTALIST that was shown last night. Very entertaining, and I had actually forgotten who the murderer was and was fooled by it. The flashbacks to Patrick's unhappy childhood as a carnival mentalist were heartbreaking and the best part of the show, but it was all good - one of this season's best so far.
-
Then I watched the last of the Oshima films in my Criterion review set: THREE RESURRECTED DRUNKARDS. I'm not quite sure why they're called "drunkards" since they're not drunk, they're just nitwits. An interesting surreal comedy if only it were funnier! After forty minutes, the movie starts over again and for a while seems the same, but then the characters begin doing things slightly differently remarking that they're changing from what they did before, making them self-aware they're in a movie, kind of like Hope and Crosby used to do in the ROAD movies. It all ends up kind of pointless and a waste of time, but it did inspire a few chuckles and was distinctly better than the last two movies in the set I watched before this one.
-
Then I spent the rest of the afternoon finishing the two BONES episodes left in the season four set. In the first, Booth keeps seeing the animated Stewie character from THE FAMILY GUY who's giving him advice. The mystery is OK, but the ending sequences are VERy, very moving and show that deep well of love and tenderness that exists between Tempe and Booth.
-
And then we get the season finale dream episode which, while not the greatest mystery, does feature all of the regular characters who had appeared this season including returns for Eric Millegen and Brendan Fehr as well as almost all of the interns who had appeared last season (and continue to appear this season).

What time do you walk at? Is there some point during the day (there usually is) when the weather is not as hot?
I can't wait for it to get warmer. I am tired of biking with layers on. Although today was warm and really nice to bike.
-
Yeah new TAR tonight!
DISCUSSION OF THE REMAINING TEAMS ON THE AMAZING RACE.
I'm curious who people here are rooting for.
I have a feeling that the time i am finding myself cheering for will not be a favorite here.
We have the 1)detectives, 2) dating couple/pageant girl, 3)brothers 4)cowboys.
I find the detectives amusing. I sort of like them but i don't find them to be particularly strong. I think the brothers are funny but not particularly good at the race. I think the cowboys are funny and the most athletic. And they are sweet. But not that bright (although they were impressive last week). But the team i find myself cheering for includes the sometimes obnoxious former miss america (or whatever pageant she was on). I have disliked them in the past. And when they fight they get on my last nerve. But the past few weeks they have worked together well. And i find them to be the most well-rounded team!

7 a.m. It was 60 here this morning at 7 a.m. Once summer gets here full time, it'll be in the mid 70s at 7 a.m. That may not sound all that warm to you, but believe me, add in the Southern humidity that comes with heat, and it's unbearable, at least for me.
-
Now I'm going to hop off-line and get some writing done so I can be done and done with this Oshima box. Glad to be leaving it behind and going on to something else tomorrow and this week.
WBBL.

The news about the bomb scare is really alarming. The only good things is that the perpetrators of yesterday's event were so inept it was discovered in time. I can only hope that all further terrorist activities, and I fear there will be, are performed by people of the same ineptitude.
I just heard on CBS News that police in New York have decided that it wasn't a bomb. As it turns out, friends were trying to light the candles on a friend's birthday cake; and the heat from the candles set off all of the sensors in and around Times Square.
;D
HAPPIEST OF BIRTHDAYS TO DEAR FRED!!!! MaY THE MEMORIES OF THIS BITHDAY KEEP YOU SMILING FOR THE NEXT 50 YEARS!!!!!!!
-
I am busy doing yard work - gotta weed while teh sun shine shines!! LATERS
-
Putting postage on packages now - had some lunch at Casa Vega - hadn't been there in a year, I think. It was most excellently excellent.
-
Almost through. Where in tarnation IS everyone? You'd think it was a Sunday or something.
-
I am still recovering from Youth Sunday.
-
We're through, packages are addressed, postage is on them. On Tuesday we still have to put the books into the padded envelopes, which then go into the priority envelope, so that will take a little time - I'll be signing all of them tomorrow.
-
Whew! I've just done a little rearranging project here in my "haven." It's cool here in SW Ohio today, but moving furniture makes you realize just how humid it is!
-
Ginny, I'm pleased you are feeling better.
Do you know what the cable was your son connected from the laptop to the tv? Did you watch in Hi Def?
-
DR Ginny I have a very important question for you ;) I need to begin reading a new book. Of the three very large books I have which shall I read first, "Father Melancholy's Daughter", Nemesis, or "A Mother and Two Daughters"?
-
DR Jane - read Nemesis. That will give me some time to finish up a couple of things and then read the first 50 pages of M&2D!
-
OK Thanks. After Nemesis I will have to squeeze in a short book for my group discussion on the 11th, The Comforts of a Muddy Saturday. I'm not really looking forward to this one as I'm not a fan of McCall Smith's #1 Ladies Detective series. I expect it will be a quick read & I might be pleasantly surprised since the subject is of interest to me.
-
DR Vixter I very much enjoyed the video of your choir singing at Carnegie Hall. :D :D
-
I'm not a fan of McCall Smith's #1 Ladies Detective series.
I am shocked! Shocked I say! What it that doesn't make you a fan? This is another series of books which I recommend constantly!
-

LOL! The #1... series is one of the things that's occupying my reading time right now. The 2010 featured country for Middfest is Botswana and they have a reading challenge for which I'm supposed to moderate the discussions on the Facebook page. So far not much activity, but I'm hoping it will pick up. I've committed to reading the whole series and I'm only halfway through the second book. My strategy is to have one of those going along with something else.
-
Unfortunately no usable recording of today's ChoirFest due to a couple of tenors who evidently decided the notated music was only a suggestion. :(
-
Like some of the actors I work with and their scripts.
-
Watching some I LOVE LUCY episodes while waiting for TAR!!!
-
Page Five my niece Amanda Dance. ;D
-
Well I think we get to do FOREVER PLAID next year - but we have to do ANNIE too.

A very moving interview with a survivor of Hiroshima:

Where do you find the volume on YOU TUBE nowadays?
-
Oh found it....on the left next to the pause button. whew

td & Ginny I knew there would be a reaction to my comment ;D. The other night we watched the first movie & Keith didn't like it. Obviously we are in the minority. I read a few of the books & decided I didn't like them enough to continue reading.
I saw the Botswana link, probably on your page ;)
I very much prefer the Masie Dobbs & Molly Murphy series.
-
Nest thing you know, DR Jane is going to tell us that she didn't like THE DANTE CLUB, THE POE SHADOW or THE LAST DICKENS, either. ;)
-
Your niece is lovely, Jrand!
-
I have returned from a loverly dinner; we both had the broiled red snapper, baked potato and broccoli and it was quite delish.Now I'm home and back to BONES.
-
Cute niece, DR JRand!
-
DR Elmore - if you'll let me know where you're staying in Canton, I'll start planning our jaunt to join you there!
Speaking of trip planning, we're in the beginning stages of planning a NYC trip for August 25-30...
-
Nest thing you know, DR Jane is going to tell us that she didn't like THE DANTE CLUB, THE POE SHADOW or THE LAST DICKENS, either. ;)
Nope, I'm going to say I never read these. I don't think they are a series, nor need to be read in order. Am I correct? Are you recommending them?

A very moving interview with a survivor of Hiroshima:
http://www.mailtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100502/NEWS/5020326
Her story made me very teary eyed, and what she says is so true. Humanity must wake up. Of course, the comments posted after her story were all about how necessary it was to bomb Hiroshima, etc, etc. Some people just don't get the point.
-
A splendidly happy birthday to DR FJL! Hope it has been a great day Fred!!

Had a nice telephonic conversation with cousin Dee Dee, who finished the book and liked it a lot - and that was very nice to hear.

I didn't read the comments after, which apparently weren't what the story was about. ::)
-
thank you DR GINNY and DR TCB.
-
I won $3 in PowerBall this week.
-
I just watched two more BONES episodes, a really funny one involving a funeral that may bemy favorite of season four and a very moving episode about a beheaded Japanese girl whose brother was a friend of Booth's.
I wish I could win the lottery!
-
I watched some fun things this evening. I began with the Blu-ray of OUT OF AFRICA. First, my Blu-ray player (Samsung) exhibited no grinding noises or problems loading and playing the disc.
Next, while it's true that Universal has artificially sharpened the image and completely scrubbed it of grain giving peopole waxy expressions (very much like the first issue of GANGS OF NEW YORK) and making it look more like high definition videotape rather than film, I have to say that after I looked at the DVD side of the disc once the Blu-ray had finished, I can see what was in their minds. That version is UNWATCHABLE - so soft and smeared that it looks simply horrible so they went mcuh too far in the other direction.
Would I like a more film-like image? Of course. Could I do without those edge haloes around figures in the foreground in many shots? You bet! But I can stand this; it doesn't destroy the film's quality or effectiveness for me.
They also bumped up the volume level of the sound. Now John Barry's music literally bursts out of the speakers (I had to knock the volume down a couple of clicks). I still adore this score.
-
Well I think we get to do FOREVER PLAID next year - but we have to do ANNIE too.
The community theater in Charlotte is also doing ANNIE next season.
-
I won $3 in PowerBall this week.
CONGRATULATIONS!! I should check my tickets - perhaps I, too, am a dollarnaire!!
-
I am sorry your choir let you down JMK
-
Luckily, neither of the two theaters I attend are doing "Annie" next year.
-
Ginny - be careful with all that furniture moving until you are sure you are clot free!
Don't make me come over there young lady!
-
Then I watched Thursday night's FLASH FORWARD. I was glad at least one of my suppositions about the mole agent was true. I also did get caught up in SOME of what is going on now that we're down to the last few episodes. The Brian F. O'Byrne storyline couldn't be less interesting to me.
-
I spent the remaining minutes of my viewing time tonight revisiting the songs "A House Is Not a Home," "Fire," and "Home" from this week's GLEE. Continuing to enjoy them still awaiting this week's new episode.
-
I also still have on my DVR the "kiss episode" of AS THE WORLD TURNS which Reid and Luke finally locked lips. That's also very fun to rewatch, especially when he calls him an "urban cowboy." Very cute indeed.
-
Page Six Dance!!!

What a full day we have had
The Vixter's high school entered a competition to create a video encouraging people to sign a pledge that they will not engage in "distracted driving" (no texting/cell phone use, eating & drinking while driving ,etc)
Apparently you had to submit your ideas and then if you were approved you could create a video and submit it to web site for public voting
The Vixters high school was one of 20 schools across the nationwide who were accepted - they wrote a song (toa tune suspicially like the Black Eyesd Peas "I have a Feeling") and taught the kids at all the town's schools, from Pre K through HIgh School a dance to go with it. They also taught a bunch of the parents and teachers and even some residents of the the Senior assisted living facility.
This morning they all met at the high school football field at 8 AM and filmed everyone doing the dance. There was a band made up of someof the high school kids
The Vixter was part of the dancing group - I was a spectator - although we spectators had parts ttoo - we had to wave our signed contracts in the air at a certian point and we had to do the wave twice at another point
Ina week or two I shall be posting teh webste and imploiring you to vote for our school - if they win they get a $10,000 grant!!
-
DR Elmore - if you'll let me know where you're staying in Canton, I'll start planning our jaunt to join you there!
Speaking of trip planning, we're in the beginning stages of planning a NYC trip for August 25-30...
Not to be rude, but didn't I say yesterday I would find out for you?
I did! I did! Post 185 yesterday. I'm waiting for the answer.
-
Mr. Rand you have a lovely niece
-
DR vixmom, I thought you were telling us what an awful day you had! While I was reading the rest of your post, I kept thinking, what's so awful? Then I went back to the top and realized you mean "a full day"! Boy, am I snarky tonight.
I am going to bed.
-
Nest thing you know, DR Jane is going to tell us that she didn't like THE DANTE CLUB, THE POE SHADOW or THE LAST DICKENS, either. ;)
Nope, I'm going to say I never read these. I don't think they are a series, nor need to be read in order. Am I correct? Are you recommending them?
Not a series.
I do recommend them, with a single caveat: I had a hard time getting into THE DANTE CLUB. I knew it was considered to be a very good first novel, but, for the longest time I could not connect with it in any way. BUT I never give up, and finally on the third attempt to read it, I found that I could not put it down. Once I had finished it, I had to read THE POE SHADOW because I became a fan of Matthew Pearl's style.
THE LAST DICKENS, however is a different case entirely. I had to read it because it involved the writing of Dickens' THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD. Not only that, but, THE LAST DICKENS was one of TWO novels released almost simultaneously involving the mystery surrounding Dickens' unfinished novel. Dan Simmons' DROOD, though hefty as a door weight, was the other. They share some characters, but, DROOD goes off in another direction. . .
If you haven't read any Matthew Pearl, I do recommend his literary mysteries.
-
Then we raced home so the Vixter could put on a dress and off to church - after church service and Sunday School were over the Vixter and I were signed up to help with the church's annual Golf Outing dinner - we were not able to attend but we made the salad for the 75 expected attendees and set up all the tables and chairs
then home again
-
The Vixter mowed the backyard (she mowed the front yard and one of the side yards yesterday but the mower ran out of gas at that point .) Since Vixdad bought some more gas she finished the job - then she showered and got ready for her Youth Group sports day - they had a softball game and various track events
meanwhile I continued to move hostas and clean up the yard - After 2 trips to home depot - 8 bags of mulch and 7 bags of yard debris the yard is starting to look presentable
-
I'm going to close up a few programs and then head downstairs and go to bed. It's going to be a warm night, I fear. Don't tell me summer is going to get here this early! Argh!
-
DR Vixmom I look forward to watching the video.
-
Vixdad put up our "Gazebo" as we call it - it is oneof those tent & trellis type thingies that you can get in Target - it provides nice shade and with the misquito netting, it provides a cooler place to eat dinner on those hot summer days
and now that I have a wireless laptop, hopefully I will be able to sit out ther and be online! I haven't tested this yet - but I amhopeful that the wireless router will extend to the backyard
-
VIBES that Elmore has a nice quiet, restful night
-
DR Vixmom I look forward to watching the video.
me too!! It was fun watching all the kids on the field
-

It was quite warm today - I would guess high 80's - andit is still quite warm - personally I am thrilled about the change of temperature - as far as I am concerned it can stay liek this until October!
-
And Vixdad bought us all wireless mice (mouses?) - so much easier than the touch pad!!
-
Well, first things first: A Very Happy Birthday to DR FJL!! ;D
-
And thanks everyone for the good wishes and congrats on the show! More on that in a little bit.
-
~~~No Clot Vibes for DR Ginny!!~~~
-
Congrats to the Vixter on the new laptop!
-
Rent went well this weekend. I had a little issue in the band. During Act One, the bass player handed his electronic tuner to the guitar player without any explanation. I saw the whole thing and was a little put off by the bass players actions. I checked with the guitar player after the show and I asked if he requested the tuner and he said no, he thought the whole thing was tacky. Later in Act Two, when the guitar 2 player came in early, before I had a chance to look over and signal him to stop, the bass player took it upon himself to get the guitar players and attention and tell him to stop. 2 strikes against him today. This bass player and I have been playing together for 12 years now, I think his attitude and ego has caught up with him. In the business, we don't confront things like this, we just don't hire again.
-
ORDERED....
Earth Vee Ess The Spider!!!!
Ditto...finally!
-
I don't like today's gory, uber-violent horror films. I've had to review some, and they've been torture for me to sit through. At the same time, when it comes time to review them, I bend over backwards to find positive things to say since even they aren't all bad.
I have no interest in slasher/horror movies that have nothing but killing just for the sake of killing. :P
-
Thanks Tom. With luck, I shall be there.
Hoo and Ray!!
-
I loved the #1 Ladie's Detective Agency - both the book and the series - I did not know there were other books - I shall have to go seek them out!
-
Here are Kim; the Feel-O-Rama nurse, et. al.; Sarah, our fabulous stage manager (she was supposed to be in the show, but volunteered to be the SM when one couldn't be found); and Louise, in her opening number garb (and her real glasses!), before she, yes she becomes Private Partz! Sean Penn! THAT's who he look like!
-
Well I am exhausted - time fro me to say nighty night
-
nighty night
-
Lovely photographic evidence of the cast!
-
I just did a quick jog.
-
As for the show itself, last night's show was great! We had probably three-fourths of the house filled and they loved it! Everything went the way it should. Afterward, a few of us went to a restaurant a few blocks away (we just made it in time to get some food) and friends who are doing "Inherit the Wind" down in Centralia (about 20 minutes south of Olympia) joined us. Amanda, one of the ensemble, has a boyfriend who has just started reviewing for a couple of papers/websites. Since they were planning on meeting anyway, some of joined in. I stayed much too long and got to bed very late...close to 2:30 am! I didn't get a lot of sleep, because had to be up in time to shower, feed the cat, get dressed, eat and go to the theater.
Today's show went well, but we only had 11 people in the audience. :-\ They were an appreciative crowd, but small. The first matinees alway seems to be small, until word gets out.
-
YAY photos!! and where are you?
Oops! I knew I forgot something...here I am as a very nervous news person (BK, I hope you don't mind non-traditional costuming, either):
(FYI: the quasi-comb-over is deliberate. ;))
-
DR Vixter I very much enjoyed the video of your choir singing at Carnegie Hall. :D :D
Ditto! It brings back fond memories of when I was in choirs...from middle school all the way through five years of college. :)
-
The guy who built the set also took pictures in our next-to-final dress rehearsal. Here are a few of his pictures...here's the opening number:
I took THE DANTE CLUB to the coast with me a few years ago when I was conducting for a summer theater in Seaside. Let's just say that I didn't find THE DANTE CLUB to be the perfect beach read. ;) Plus I figured out the whole Dan Teal thing the first time I read it.
And just because...here are our gold lamé boys (yes, that's the narrator on the right):
I must say it is a lot of fun to see the cast photos from the Indiana production and the Washington production, as well as having seen the cast of the Los Angeles production and how they all differ, and are yet the same!
Or something like that! Anyway, it is fun.
-
Well I think we get to do FOREVER PLAID next year - but we have to do ANNIE too.
The community theater in Charlotte is also doing ANNIE next season.
A local community theater will be doing Annie in a couple of weeks.
-
It's late, so i'll say my birthday thank you's tomorrow.
Many thanks to all of you.
-
Good Morning! Good Afternoon! Good Evening!
I'm... Well... That's old news...
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR FJL!!!!!
-
It sure is nice to have internet again.
And it's even nicer that Time-Warner agreed to give us another couple days of credit for the seemingly constantly interrupted service. :)
-
And now, it's time to ketchup...
-
And since it's now started to rain... with lightning and thunder...
DR George - Great Pics!
DR vixmom and the vixter - It really is great reading about all the activities you participate on your own, as mother and daugther and as a family.
And there goes another lightning strike...
Laters... (Goodnight)
Thanks, Jose!
