Title: THE APOSTROPHE
Post by: bk on January 06, 2007, 12:44:54 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were filled with apostrophes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently on the lecture circuit with The Apostrophe According To The Cows.

Strange - I've been to Europe about ten times but the trip that came to mind was one of only a seven hour drive about 15 years ago - when I first met my half brother and his family.  Suddenly I had a whole new family and we have been "close" ever since. We grew up in such different areas with seemingly different influences but have so very much in common. The drive was one of excitment and apprehension! How do you introduce yourself to people who don't even know you exist let alone know you are a blood relative.
My half brother was the first member of my "birth" family with whom I had contact. I met my Mother and Father later. For me it was an amazing journey - a journey much more about heart, emotion and discovery of self than about geography.

My journeys overseas in this century have been to North America twice and to Europe twice. These more recent trips have been wonderful in terms of scenery etc but has been the people (friends) in the UK, France, Canada and the U S of A that have made those journeys so worthwhile.

Casey would waltz
With a strawberry blonde
While his INAMORATA watched from a table next to the dance floor
And munched on carrot sticks in a way that the strawberry blonde
Found disgusting.

There have been trips, many trips, that I have taken.

Without drugs.

(Somebody had to say it.)

There was the drive a little over three years ago that der Brucer and I took, from the left coast to the right, with five dogs in the car and the belt of Orion in the night sky pointing to our destination, our new home.

There was our first trip to Europe together, on the morning of a major earthquake, the first time I'd ever been in the air, which I've always thought would be a nice story I should title "Leaving Terra Firma."

For some reason, our trip to Cincinnati remains highly memorable, but not for the food.

The cruise in the Caribbean had a number of interesting moments, not all of them nice, and one of the characters involved was downright disgusting.

There was the trip to D. C. where I was nearly sidelined by allergies...

The trip to Seattle where it rained, constantly...

The drive into the Sierra Nevadas when my ears got infected and we had to retreat to a lower elevation (this was with my parents and sister, long before I met der B)...

Come to think of it, I've done a lot of travelling over the last half-century.

Travels usually are travails to me.  Don't do it well.

My favorite trips are the times I have been to NYC to see shows!  I loved going to Ireland and spending a day & night in London during the same ten days.

Good morning, all!   I've got to stop watching MEDIUM and GHOST WHISPERER: creepy dreams about haunted places provided a poor night of sleep and I ended up with my usual nightmare of trying to finish music by a deadline.  Now I want to go back to bed but I have to go downtown for several hours of TOYLAND edits.  After that, I have some computer work to do.  Tonight, I'm going to a party given by one of the Singing Nun producers, and that's my day.

TOD:  Maybe later.

It would be wonderful to have the CREATURE cd within a month!

MR BK - is this a television series you are working on?  Or is this a television show that will have only one episode?  I guess I missed where that was talked about.

My most memorable trip was a six-week business stint in Atlanta when I was working on the AT&T divestiture in 1984.  Just had a generally lovely time being in a lovely town and meeting lovely people.

Most memorable recent trip was in 2000 to celebrate my 40th brithday at the same time as Disney was celebrating the year 2000.  We got a room right near Epcot and I could see the big 2000 on the Spaceship Earth ride from our window.  (This was more exciting than I can describe.)  Bad service at the Dolphin hotel, but had a lovely time otherwise.

I hate to say that it's changed, but it has lost much of its regionality and personality to overdevelopment. Basically the powers that be want it to look like every other town in the US. There are still nice pockets to be found, and some of the redevelopment has been good!

(In our new neighborhood, to conteract all the new condos being built and hundreds more drivers cutting through at a high rate of speed, they have narrowed the roads and built speed tables so it will be safer to walk there. Some people hate it but I think it's great!)

1974 - what a horrible year to be an Academy member because I honestly could not have been able to select Best Picture between CHINATOWN and THE GODFATHER PART II. Both are masterpieces; both contain flawless acting, characters so interesting they burst from the screen, superb production design, music, costumes. And both from the same studio! (And the other three choices? LENNY, THE CONVERSATION (another masterpiece), and (oops!) THE TOWERING INFERNO).

I sympathize with you, DR Elmore. I had a bad dream last night, too, only mine was teaching-oriented. Here I am in my sixth year of retirement, and I still have dreams of being back in the classroom with students trying to pull something over on me. They rarely succeeded in real life because I circled my classroom constantly while teaching watching what my kids were doing, but in my dreams, I seem planted in the front of the room, and there's stuff going on all over I can't get to. Very frustrating.

OMG Edi, I've had that same dream several times about needing the course to graduate!

JRand would probably know, but I think this is one of the most common dreams. I stopped having it as much when I found my college diploma. I was already working on a film when graduation came around so they mailed me my diploma and I didn't have that sense of closure.

The dream is very detailed, although the details would always change. Didn't know where the class was, who taught it, hadn't read any of the course material---sometimes I'm already into my next stage of life, married and living in Atlanta but have to move back to Athens to finish this one course!

I like the recurring dream about finding a room in your house that you didn't know existed MUCH better!

That's very funny about the Mac not having an image capture program built in especially since it's so famous as a media computer.

My PC laptop came with a DVD watching program that contains a very easy to use image capture button. One mouse click and the paused image is captured, and another mouse click saves it to the hard drive.

Unfortunately, this has happend to so much of the US--the character and culture of each region has been lost. We used to travel to visit new places and see new things. Now the new places look very much like those we left.

As for the Topic of the Day...

This is an easy one.  My trip to Australia a couple of years ago.  Yes, it was for work, but I had plenty of time for play.  The trip started off on a very nice note: Business Class from LAX to Syndey!  And then I even got bumped up on my connecting from from Syndey to Gold Coast.  I had a very nice and roomy room at a wonderful resort hotel on the beach.  I ate well.  I drank well.  And I even had a wonderful birthday dinner while I was there.  OH! And I had even jumped off a 40-meter diving platform.  Twice!  Then it was over to Melbourne for a few days where were put up at The Crowne - basically a city within a city.  I ate well.  I drank well.  I even gambled well - $300 (AUS$) ahead!  Then the final stop was a couple of days in Sydney where I stayed in a hotel right under The Harbor Bridge.  And I even climbed The Harbor Bridge.  Again, I ate well.  I drank well.  Etc., etc., etc.

But beyond the scenery and amenities, it was the people I met along the way that truly made the trip very memorable.  I was on an audition tour with Universal Studios Japan, and I was the newbie in the group.  Their regular music person was not about to make the trip this time, so their casting director - who I used to work with at Disney - recommended me, and I got the gig.  Everyone with USJ was very nice and welcoming.  *And they loved buying drinks for the table.  ;)

And the many "natives" I came in contact with just could not have been nicer.  -I still remember being asked a few times if I would like my picture taken just because I happened to be walking around with a camera in my hand.  I felt like a tourist, but in the good sense.

And, truly, the highlight of the trip was meeting DR Tomovoz, his DP Colin and their DDs Magnus and Fosca.  While in Melbourne, I had the pleasure of heading out to their homestead for an overnight stay complete with homecooked meals, sparkling conversation, and tour of their backyard (which is much more than a backyard).  Tom even got me up close to a couple of kangaroos - and kangaroo poop.  ;)  Oh... And the Freddo Frogs!  *And I'm so glad I was able to see them again during the recent trip stateside.
Title: Re:THE APOSTROPHE
Post by: JoseSPiano on January 06, 2007, 10:03:40 AM
...And after the two weeks in Australia, the audition tour continued stateside in New York City, Charlotte, Orlando, Chicago and Los Angeles.  And it was while in Los Angeles that I first met bk in person.  At Musso & Frank no less!  :)

Or was that the second time I met bk?  Hmm... When was "Jeepers Creepers" recorded?  In any case, it was the first time I dined with bk.  And former DR Jay was also in attendance; in fact, he drove.  And DR MusicGuy was there too, iirc.

As for the graduation "dream"...

I would worry from time to time during my undergrad that I was not going to be allowed to graduate due to an error of sorts during my original application/registration process going into freshman year.  I was a music major, piano performance, but I never played an entrance audition.  I just applied and was accepted to the department.  And I even ended up with a very good teacher.  I'm still not sure how that happened, but it did.

And when it came to graduate, I was so afraid that that would come back to haunt me.  However, I was also worried that I had missed a class or two since I had taken a lot of extra classes/credits -  that somehow while taking all those extra electives, I had missed one of my required classes.  *I took my time to get my B.M. - 6 years, so I had a couple of semesters to take some "fun classes".

And then since I had post-poned my graduation recital by a semester, I ended up with two diplomas.  Apparently, I was qualified to graduate from the University without the recital, but the recital qualified me for the Music diploma.

EMAIL FROM A FRIEND:

Happy New Year!!  to All

As another year will shortly be a memory, my heartfelt appreciation goes out to all of you who have taken the time and trouble to send me "forwards" over the past 12 months. Thank you for making me feel safe, secure, blessed, and wealthy.

Extra thanks for the ones that I have to open 5 times to get to the message.

Special thanks to whoever sent me the one about rat crap in the glue on envelopes 'cause I now have to go get a wet towel every time I need to seal an envelope.

Also, I scrub the top of every can I open for the same reason. Because of your concern, I no longer drink Coca Cola because it can remove toilet stains.

I no longer drink Pepsi, or Dr Pepper, since the people who make these products are atheists who won't put "Under God" on their cans.

I no longer use Saran wrap in the microwave because it causes cancer.

I no longer check the coin return on pay phones because I could be pricked with a needle infected with AIDS.

I no longer use cancer-causing deodorants even though I smell like a water buffalo on a hot day.

I no longer go to shopping malls because someone might drug me with a perfume sample and rob me.

I no longer receive packages from, nor send packages by UPS, or Fed Ex, since they are actually Al Qaeda in disguise.

I no longer answer the phone, because someone will ask me to dial a number for which I will get a phone bill with calls to Jamaica, Uganda,Singapore, and Uzbekistan.

I no longer eat KFC, because their "chickens" are actually horrible mutant freaks with no eyes or feathers.

I no longer have any sneakers -- but that will change once I receive my free replacement pair from Nike.

I no longer have to buy expensive cookies from Neiman Marcus, since I now have their recipe.

I no longer worry about my soul, because at last count I have 363,214 angels looking out for me.

Thanks to you, I have learned that God only answers my prayers if I forward an e-mail to seven of my friends and make a wish within five minutes.

I no longer have any savings, because I gave it to a sick girl who is about to die in the hospital (for the 1,387,258th time)

I no longer have any money at all - but that will change once I receive the $15,000 that Microsoft and AOL are sending me for participating in their special email program.

Yes, I want to thank you so much for looking out for me that I will now return the favor!

If you don't send this e-mail to at least 144,000 people in the next 7 minutes, a large pigeon with a wicked case of diarrhea will land on your head at 5:00 PM (EDT) this afternoon. I know this will occur because it actually happened to a friend of mine's next door neighbor's ex-mother-in-law's second husband's cousin's beautician.

Have a very HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I wonder if you're the teacher in the class that I can never seem to find in my dreams...the one I haven't attended all quarter and don't even know where it is but of course, I need it to graduate!

Yep!  Ditto!  Me, too!

I've had this dream far too many times...and I remember several of them.

I'm in a panic because I've suddenly realized there's a class I signed up for that I absolutely MUST have to graduate.

The dreams vary, but inevitably, I have a textbook for it, and a vague memory of sitting in the class getting an assignment, but I don't have any work done and I don't remember being in the class in a LONG time.

Mine involve my having to enter a multi-story building...probably built in the 1940s...and there are two front entrances....I can't figure out which entrance is closest to the classroom I need to find.

As I wander the halls, I realize I don't know which floor I'm supposed to be in.  Every class is in progress, but when I look in, I see a handful of students working and no teacher I can ask.  I turn a corner and dozens of classrooms loom ahead, but the hallway is dark.

I always wake up in a sweat.

I hate to say that it's changed, but it has lost much of its regionality and personality to overdevelopment.

Now, now,...it still has some rural charm:

Eleven-Hundred Pound 'Hogzilla' Killed in Georgia

Quote
FAYETTEVILLE, Ga.  —  A wild hog weighing eleven-hundred pounds, bigger than the near-mythical "Hogzilla" caught in rural south Georgia a few years ago, has been been shot and killed in a suburban neighborhood.

William Coursey, an avid hunter who shot the hog in a neighbor's yard in Fayette County in the suburbs south of Atlanta, had it hanging from a tree in his front yard.

Crews Rescue at Least 6 After Avalanche Buries Cars in Colorado; Search Continues (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,242221,00.html)

DENVER — Colorado highway officials say a massive avalanche buried several cars in Berthoud Pass about 60 miles west of Denver and sent other vehicles over the edge.

"Our crews said it was the largest they have ever seen. It took three paths," said Stacey Stegman, spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Crews have rescued at least six people, she said. They were probing the area for other survivors.

She said some cars were buried in the snow in an area called Stanley near Berthoud Falls between 10:00 and 10:30 a.m.

Berthoud Pass is the main route to Winter Park, one of Colorado's largest ski areas.

I just caught up with all the posts and before I can start posting myself, I get a call from my sister saying that she and my parents are coming over very soon to help move my furniture back into my house from the garage where I moved it when I got my new carpet installed.  Originally, they said that they'd be over at 1:00 and now they're coming early??  They never come early!  I haven't even taken a shower yet!  Anyway, when the living room's all done (that's all that we have to do), I can start getting stuff out of the storage unit and stop paying for it. :)

Good Afternoon!

Well... As I was getting ready to head out earlier, I decided I just had to organize some of the "piles" in my room.  I just did not want to come back to all of that stuff later on.  So, after unpacking a few boxes, putting away some clothes, storing some CDs, organizing my accumulated mail... I believe I am set to head out now.  Guilt-free (almost).

And I think I may try my luck at TKTS tonight.  We'll see.

DR RODZINSKI - said TCM last night was showing movies that featured actors who had or would play James Bond.  So we got Sean in THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY and  Roger in CROSSPLOT and Pierce in MARS ATTACKS!

I see, JRand. So it was satifying some sort of theme. Makes me feel a little better.

I wonder if we are ever in Athens at the same time. Trying to finish that ONE damn course!

INAMORATA-
Probably one of my top 20 vocal performances ever is Jerry Vale singing this song. Just incredible.

"Hold me close and say you're mine. With a love as warm as wine.
I'm at heaven's door, Inamorata. Want you even more, Inamorata.

A lot of places look like Atlanta now, it is true. But Atlanta had so much more beauty to begin with than a lot of places, so what has happened there really bothers me. Because there was no plan down there to preserve any land really, just build a subdivision anywhere, then when it gets congested, build a highway around it, and on and on... It happened so fast!

The first disc also contains an hour long episode of THE MICKEY MOUSE CLUB that contains as one of its features the introductory episode (with Tim Consadine and Tommy Kirk as themselves) introducing the story for the audience.

I thoughly enjoyed seeing this hour long episode from the second season of the show. Such talent, such information (a newsreel on the USS NAUTALIS), Jimmie Dodd with another of his words of wisdom for kids. Just a wonderful show.

Unfortunately, this has happend to so much of the US--the character and culture of each region has been lost. We used to travel to visit new places and see new things. Now the new places look very much like those we left.
When der B and I have travelled, we've indeed found a lot of carbon-copy culture.  The newer buildings all look alike, the malls are filled with exactly the same stores, everything has become mass-produced, and many people seem perfectly happy to never explore what might be different.

(Der Brucer's daughter and son-in-law are perfect examples of these sorts of people, if perfect is a word that can apply to them.)

But at the same time, there is a renewed interest in local things.  Having moved cross-country just a little over three years ago, der B and I have found ourselves in a communtity that culturally is quite different from what we knew in Long Beach, CA.  The foods are different, the way the streets are laid out is different.  Get away from the main highway, and what can only be called a regional style emerges.  It's not necessarily something concrete, it's more of a sensation.

Sure, it's cheaper to mass produce everything that is "new,"  to make everything like you would find it at McDonalds, and the people who are willing to settle for McDonalds will actually defend their choice, snobbily snubbing anything more complicated as "gourmet".  But not everyone is like that, and not everyone is willing to choose the mass produced lifestyle.

Those of us who don't like the mass produced are learning to leave the highway.

Good Evening!

Back from another day of workwalking the streets of New York City.  *Although, I did eventually end up doing some work during my travels...

By the time the D train made it to Columbus Circle, all I really felt like doing was walking around for a bit.  So that's what I did.  And as I was walking down 9th Ave., a friend of mine called me and asked if I could play through some music for him for an upcoming audition.  And since we were only about three blocks from each other at the time, we went ahead and decided to meet up then and there.  We headed over to Ripley-Grier, ran through the music and just had a good visit and catch-up session.  *And I have to say, the new musical material for the upcoming production of The Little Mermaid is quite good.  Those Alan Menken ballads are... well.. just... hmm.. very Alan Menken-ish.  -Which is a very good thing.  :)  *And Glenn Slater's lyrics ain't bad either.  ;)

After the impromptu coaching session, I continued walking down 8th Ave... Down to 23rd... Over to 7th Ave.. Down to 14th... Over to Union Square...

Oohh!  The Whole Foods at Union Square is now carrying gelato from Il Laboratorio del Gelato!  So... Two scoops of Tarragon with Pink Peppercorns, and one scoop of Black Mission Fig.  Both very good, and the two flavors actually complemented each other.

And then since I was down by Trader Joe's - and since there were no lines to speak of (which was a very pleasant surprise) I stopped in to both the wine shop and the regular store to pick up some supplies.

Then it was back over to 8th Ave to catch the A - which is running local this weekend - back up to 145th...

And here I am.

:)

Has anyone here (of the female persuasion) had an ovarian cyst burst?  Well, on Friday in the wee hours of the morning, I had such a thing occur.  I distinctly remember asking DR Jed to kill me a few times, before the people at the ER could get the IV in and get some pain relief into my body.  The good news is that it should heal itself within a few days, bad news is that it remains a bit painful for those days.  So I have a few lovely prescriptions, and I'm confined to rest for the weekend.  Boy am I antsy and bored...

OUCH!  I most definitely am a male.  I do not have ovaries.  But the phrase "ovarian cyst burst".... OUCH!

edisaurus, please send me an e-mail reminder about Chinatown - it was a Varese Sarabande CD (where I did the majority of my recordings) so of course I have it (I used to have many extras, but I've given them away over the years).  So, I'm happy to burn you a CD along with your Wonderful Guy CD and maybe even your Kritzer CD.  I still haven't gotten to Fed Ex to send the tapes - will do that first thing Monday morning.

Oh my! Xmas in January! I am thrilled!

My actor friend who has been looking for the soundtrack will be, too. We can both share it! He did a reading for Sacco and Vanzetti for the price of a dinner, and I would be thrilled to offer him something he has been seeking for so long.

I have a piece of sheet music from the sequel...The Two Jakes. I'm surprised anyone even published that!

I talked to my friends who are opening up a new post house and they said they will have plenty of room for me to work on your project. Yay!

After moving the small (and fairly light) couch, my niece and I went to see a movie because my mom was at a friend's house.  We saw "The Holiday" with Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Jack Black and the wonderful Eli Wallach.  My niece had seen it twice already and wanted to see it again!  I had no idea what to expect.  I just knew that it was about two women who switched houses for a vaction.  I thought that it was a thoroughly delightful movie. :) They featured more about the Cameron/Jude relationship (Jude plays Kate's brother) than the Kate/Jack relationship (Jack is a composer who knows Cameron).  They filled Kate's experiences with Eli Wallach's story.  He plays a former movie writer who lives next door to Cameron (who's in England at the moment) and he teaches Kate about American movies.  He had some line about movies never used to be about box office receipts and how much money they made.  I wonder if the screenwriter knows BK (or has read his opinion about that subject here on HHW ::))!

So after the movie, I check my voicemail and my sister called, saying that she and my mom are at my place.  My niece and I get to my place and they had brought an area rug to put in front of the fireplace (not too close, though) and they put the couch behind that, facing the fireplace.  It looked real nice. :D

I was at the new house today, doing yard work. It was a beautiful day---t-shirt weather. Some friends came over with their paint chip blocks to help us pick out paint for a "problem room".  (Pink floor tiles, tub, toilet and fixtures, many the previous owner painted purple, like the toilet tank, brown and gold wall tiles, peach colored walls---bleeechhh.)

One thing I'm realizing now is how few of the things we bought for our 100 year old dream house (10' celings) will work in our 100 year old tree house (8' ceilings.) We had lots of beautiful antique lamps that would have been perfect in the other house. Oh well...that's the least of our problems.

But the best part was this:  while my niece and I were still at the movie, someone came to the apartment next door (where the pipe burst and flooded my apartment).  My sister heard a noise and wondered if might be someone that the owner had hired to fix stuff and my mom went over there to talk to the person.  But then my sister heard my mom say "...and we'll send you the bill!" and my sister was thinking that my mom was chewing out a hired handyman but it was the owner!  I guess she told him a thing or two spoke with him and he agreed to reimburse me for the hole in the wall AND he is going to come over tomorrow to fix the hole in my wall AND he's going to pay for my carpet!!!  YEA!!  I don't have to go to small claims court!!  Of course, he may have been prepared to pay for it all along (I hadn't sent him the bills, yet), but I don't care.

So all I have to do now is find the darn bills!  I have the carpet bill (it's on my new Home Depot Credit Card) but I think I misplaced the plumber's bill who originally cut the hole in the wall. :-[ I know it has to be somewhere, but I think that if I print out a copy of the cancelled check (which I can do through on-line banking), that might be good enough...I hope.  I'll be looking for the thing after I eat (I'm hungry), but I'm so happy that he agreed to pay for it.  Now, he just has to follow through.  I'll find out tomorrow! ;D

I don't mind the grey, I think it adds highlights and the grey in my hair is a really nice grey, I just don't like the drab color the rest of my hair seems to have become.   It looks like it did when I was younger now

But that hasn't helped take the stain out of my sink.  I'll figure something out. There are only a few spots and it isn't a white sink, so I don't want to go crazy and have the color of the sink fade.

I bought a black a dress with instructions to wash it by hand in cold water. When I did, all the black dye came out into the sink and I flung it into the huge claw-foot tub. It stained the sink and the tub. The sink was one of those composite types from Home Depot so I used Barkeeper's Friend scouring powder and that did the trick. But it is abrasive!

The tub is a 6 foot long antique so I didn't want to scour it. It's still stained. I was SO P-Oed!

I was able to finish the rest of the episodes of THE HARDY BOYS on the first disc in the set. I suspect this gets me about halfway through the story.

I remember vividly being TERRIFIED of that owl in the tower. It truly gave me shivers as a little kid. Makes me laugh now, of course, but it certainly kept me on the edge of my seat as a youngster watching this for the first time. Mr. Applegate also scared me to death with his cutlass.

I watched Steven Spielberg's MUNICH tonight for the first time. Well made as his pictures are always, and there certainly were involving characters and story (I liked the irony of the hunters becoming the hunted, but weren't we talking about THE CONVERSATION earlier today; everything old is new again), but like many of his pictures now, too long for my taste, and saving the final airport massacre to play in counterpoint to the protagonist's lovemaking reunion with his wife was not particularly effective for me.

The murder of the hitwoman was one of the more disturbing images ever in a Spielberg movie.

I am currently cat sitting for 2 very cute kitties named Hamlet and Bella. They have some rather high maintenence feeding requirements so I have spent the week staying with them.

Their mom and dad sat for our cats while we were both out of town.

It's still cold here in Oakland.  The day never warmed up the way it was supposed to, and it's supposed to be colder tonight.

Tomorrow, though, things are supposed to start warming up.  We might get up to the 60s tomorrow.

YIKES for you... I hope it gets warmer

I ahve a question... Have you ever been on the Bart?
