So last night, I went out to feed the cats at my sister's and her boyfriend's houses (all cats are alive and well :D) and on the way home, I drove through the Arby's drive-through.  I got all the way into my house before I realized that they didn't give me one of my items (potato bites...they were $3!).  I really wasn't going to worry about it, but then I also realized that I forgot to put out the yard waste container at my sister's house...dammit.  So, since I already had to go back out, I drove through the Arby's drive-through again and they gave me what they forgot the first time.  Then, I drove ALL the way back to my sister's just to put out the yard waste container.  I got home and just finished watching "Mad Men."

Hey Everybody.  MAN, it's 4:00am PST, and the DP and the DG are up.  The company is still asleep, although Brandon (11) opened his eyes recently.  Hopefully, the east coast time will aide in their getting up this morning as we want to leave by 5:00am.  When we finally get to LA, (I'm hoping by 11:00am or noon) it's Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and the surroundings with all the popular sites.  Most likely it will be just a driving tour.  We are going to go to Pinks for lunch, that's really all that we know for sure.  Then later in the afternoon, we'll head to the Disneyland area where we'll hang out this eve, get some dinner in the Downtown Disney area, and then hit the ground running tomorrow morning.  The kids have never been to a Disney park before and I just love playing tour guide for first time visitors.

And we're off!!! (almost a William Finn reference!)

Monday morning greetings!  I have an appointment today with our family doctor, who was in communication with the cardiologist the whole time I was in the hospital.  They're in the same health care network, but practice at different hospitals, so it will be interesting to get his take on my recent experience.  If he says, "I told you so," I might have to smack him.

TOD: The last book I finished was "Marion Fay," a late novel by Anthony Trollope and the 56th volume of his I've read. It was a typical Trollope love story, one in which money and social status are the road blocks to happiness. He learned a lot from Jane Austen. Yet this wasn't exactly a typical novel for him or in general. There isn't entirely the happy ending you expect from an often humorous romance.

That leaves me with about four more books of his to read, but only one novel, "Castle Richmond," which is said to be one of his best. It's only by accident that I saved one of the supposed best for last. Frankly, most of his books are equally enjoyable, which is why I've been able to read through his body of work in the last six years.

But I have to finish re-reading "Anna Karenina" first.

Good morning, all! I headed for bed around 10:30 last night and by 11:15 I was printing out the Tams-Witmark Finding Aid for the Library of Congress' T-W Collection. After that I passed out and slept quite well, with three interesting dreams: in the first was was on Amsterdam Avenue with Mrs Victor Herbert and someone - I don't think it was Victor - was playing a cello; the second was a nightmare that was getting creepy when I woke up around 3 am this morning and I rememebr little of it now; the last involved Kate Baldwin, Cheyenne Jackson, and a renovation of an old store front in Dayton, OH.

I've been invited to see the new Julia Roberts film today at 1:15, but i think I may pass, drop off the "Meadowlark" score to the copyist and deal with another copyist's questions on the orchestration for "Our Time" from Liz' On- and Off-Broadway recording. Ron Raines called me last night and he wants to come over to borrow some more CDs, so I expect he'll arrive at some time around 10 or 11. While I'm waiting for him, i need to dig out the score for "Ballet Ballads" by Jerome Moross that I was sent last month by the copyist and proofread it.

TOD: I'm reading too many books at the moment, including a horror novel, GHOST ROAD BLUES, which i was enthusiastic about when I started it but I'm losing the momentum. The last three books I read were all by Josh Kilmer-Purcell, I'M NOT MYSELF THESE DAYS, CANDY EVERYBODY WANTS, and THE BUCOLIC PLAGUE, which I really enjoyed. I also liked MARVELOUS MELBA, wonderful biography of Dame Nellie Melba, a most amazing woman and opera star.

TOD:

Last book I read (I finished it on Friday, in fact) was THE TEN CENT PLAGUE by David Hajdu.  This book chronicles the growing hysteria surrounding the comic book industry in the late 40s to early 50s that culminated in community-sponsored bookburnings, McCarthy-style Senate hearings and, ultimately, censorship.

I was so looking forward to this book because of my love of comics, but I found it a drudge that I had to slug my way through.  The author never seems to bother to try to recreate the period of time he writes about and just delivers facts and quotes from some of the writers, artists and publishers involved.  He also goes into detailed tangents--I came away knowing as much about the life and career of Estes Kefauver as I did about that of E.C. comics publisher Bill Gaines.  The book comes to an abrupt halt with the end of E.C. Comics and the last hundred pages are all footnotes, citations and a bibliography.  I'm sorry that I ever picked this one up...

DR TCB, I guess I left yesterday before I saw your post. Or maybe I just left the screen up.

I did go to the international day, but after I posted (at 4:45pm). Although they must have started serving the food early (which they never do). Sadly my favorite food there (Greek) was already sold out! :(

But I got to taste all the other kinds of foods.

It is sort of interesting because some of them don't really know how to serve food to lots of people. Some of them have great food (like the Filipino table). But they don't really know how to keep it warm properly.

The Greek table it usually the most organized. They pre-plate most of they food so you don't have to wait so long. And they serve things that work at an event like this.

Barbados had a huge line yesterday. And they were putting like 8-10 items on a plate. But it took so long.

The best and most organized for the event to me was Ukraine. They had perogies. But they were cooking them in a huge pot of boiling water on the spot. So it was easy to prepare and it was hot and delicious. They were giving 3 per person and since it was only one thing it was fast.

There were some interesting kinds of food (that I don't even know what they were) from Sri Lanka.

The biggest disappointment to me is Italy. They have so much to choose from. ANd every year they give a piece of store bought pizza bread (bread with sauce) and a stale bun with a cold sausage in it.

I ended up being very full.

TOD - In the hospital, I finished Morality for Beautiful Girls, the third installment in Alexander McCall Smith's #1 Ladies' Detective Agency series.  I was supposed to write an article for the Middfest Magazine on literature of Botswana, but turned over my research materials to the editor last week and let it go.  Right now, I'm concentrating on finishing Mary McCarthy's The Group to be ready for Thursday evening when my book group friends are coming over to watch the movie.

TOD: Last book I read.

Last night I finished a book which I loved called THE HUNGER GAMES by Suzanne Collins.

It's a trilogy. I have the 2nd book and the 3rd book comes out later this month.

It's not necessarily a book I would have gravitated towards. But I had seen a few people recommend it. ANd when i went to amazon.com it had 800/1100 5 stars. And 200 more with 4 stars (that is a pretty high rating).

And everybody there was raving about it.  The story is about a teenage girl age 16 ( and it is a young adult book). But it has some violence, so it definitely isn't for anyone too young.

I just loved this book.

I have a bunch more books to read including:

Last Night At Chateau Marmont by Lauren Weisberger (The Devil Wears Prada), the first 3 FBI Profiler books by Lisa Gardner.

And now I'm starting Catching Fire (book 2) by Suzanne Collins.

The last books I read (I read several at a time) were:

ALMOST A GENTLEMAN, an autobiography by playwright John Osborne, which I liked immensely.

AT THE ROYAL COURT, a look at the first 25 years of the English Stage Company and their work by many of the participants...playwrights, directors, actors, others...very good, with lots of great photos...

BEAUTY QUEEN OF LEENANE, a play by Martin McDonagh, not as good a play as his PILLOWMAN, but well worth the read, with the usual dark funny touches he's known for.

EXIT PURSUED BY A BADGER by Nick Asbury, which is the compiled blog of an actor during the RSC mammoth undertaking of staging all the histories of Richard II, Henry IV, parts one & two, Henry V, all three parts of Henry VI, and ending with Richard III.  This I'm currently reading and so far, so good.

Morning, all!

Happy B-day, Vixmom!

TOD: Born to Kvetch, by Michael Wex, which I'm now re-reading with notepad in hand. Between the corny humor, the linguistic minutia, and the whiplash transitions from scholarly to silly, I'm loving every page, but I'm still amazed that there's more than five people out there who could read this thing, let alone make it a best-seller...

Very light orders for Billy Barnes' L.A. - I knew they'd be light, but not quite THIS light.  So, this will obviously not ever sell out and I've just cancelled plans for two other CDs involving revues (not LA revues - NY revues - classics from the 50s) - I did this one for Billy, but I'm not ever going to take a chance on something like this again -

The buses get worse and worse; today, after visiting the copyist, I waited at 96th and Broadway for a bus. By the tme I had walked to 82nd Street, no bus had yet come along. The only good thing about walking in the heat was running into Patricia Sinnott, Steve Sondheim's office manager when I first knew him. It's been 22 years since she left Steve for a brief employment with Sir andrew's Really Useful Company before ending up at Symphony space.  I hadn't seen her in about twelve years so it was a ncie surprise. I think next week we'll get together and visit.

I had some eggs for lunch, the picked up three count them three packages and the important envelope.  Paying attention to its contents (sometimes I look at what invoice is being paid, sometimes not, but lately I have been keeping track) and this invoice managed to jump ahead by three titles.  So, I wrote them and they told me they didn't have those three invoices, which is pretty amazing as I not on include a hard copy in the top box of all their shipments (and clearly marked so), but I also send them via e-mail.  So, after this week's check, he jumps backwards to take care of those three invoices, then he'll got back to where we were and by the time that happens, we'll be four or five more titles ahead.  And so it goes.

Shouldn't it be the mootherless cows?

Happiest of birthdays to Vixmom, from Sacramento!

Don't have time to ketchup right now, but JR, I thought of you today in Old Sacramento--we went to a movie memorabilia store and they had a complete shelving unit FULL of photos of Lucy, most of which I had never seen before.

I loved that book. I also listened to it on audio, so I could hear the correct pronunciation of the words.

Tell Patricia hello for me. She's an old friend of a friend and I've met her on a number of occasions. Even cooked for her a few times. Wonderful woman.

Odd day at the office. It started with the head honcho coming in and asking how much work we accomplished over the weekend. When I informed him that we didn't work over the weekend, he almost lost it. I wasn't the one who gave the staff the weekend off, but he was informed that no one was working. I'm just glad the rest of the staff was there to hear it and scratch their heads along with me.

I was just on youtube watching the blackface performer Tess Gardella (Aunt Jemima) performing her two big numbers from the 1929 SHOWBOAT performances. There's some mighty strange hoofing going on from about six young black ladies during "Hey Fella!" I think Gardella sings about one out of every ten notes Kern actually wrote. There are also some lyric changes from the published score and the dance music to the Ballyhoo has singing over it that's not indicated in the 1927 vocal score.

WHAT A DAY!!!  Oh my, we had so many people coming in, phone calls, all sorts of stuff...I haven't been this busy in ages and since we're both on our first day back from vacation it was a bit chaotic.  It was nice though and nothing really bothered me too much, just a bit more than I was ready for.

I agree with DR Cillaliz - WHAT A DAY!!!  We are finally safely ensconced in the Candy Cane Inn in Anaheim.  It's been a day.  We walked around Hollywood Blvd, went to Madame Tussaud's place, which was fun.  We went to Pinks for lunch, which was fun. The youngest is having a hard time being away from home and will break down at the drop of a hat.  Hopefully being at Disneyland will help keep him focused.  Here's hoping....

And DR Laura, after my hideously disgusting (in a good way) hot dog from Pinks, I'm still feeling fine.  Thanks always for caring!

I rarely read two books at a time, and then there is a reason I need to put the one book down to read another.  Just yesterday I put down NO MAN DIES ALONE to continue reading at a later date.  I know it will not be my book discussion book, it is long, and I own the book.  I will read the library books first beginning with RIVER OF DOUBT.

Last night while at the theater my phone suddenly decided to turn itself on.  You can imagine how embarrassed I was.  It it a slider phone and how it turned on with the lid down I have no idea.  ???

Much of what MR BK wrote in the notes about being single is very familiar territory to me.

I just don't think I have the time and or energy to devote to a relationship anymore - I am reconciled to being single for the rest of my life - whatever time may be left to me.

And that's okay.

we took off Friday for "The Sweetest Place On Earth" - Hershey , PA

the GPS directed us through lower Manhattan  to take the Holland tunnel ... this might have been a very good idea at say  3 AM

4 PM on  Friday - not so much

it took us 45 minutes to go one block ... we also discovered that NYC, in its wisdom, has decided that between the hours of 4 PM - 7 PM all routes leading to the Holland tunnel are closed to traffic - the trip was supposed to take  3 1/2 hour s- it ended up taking 5 1/2 because it took 2 hours to get across Manhattan....

then the GPS power connection cord, which plugs into the cigarette lighter, (brand new out of the box 4 hours earlier) stopped working

this was a problem since wewere counting on the GPS and I left my google maps printout at home

That sounds great, even if it weren't free. I remember the Menonite restaurants in Sarasota, which are somewhat similar, and the home cooking was always warming.

Sounds like a great way to spend part of your birthday.

Well, I just voted.  Tomorrow (Tuesday) will be the Washington state primaries (http://www.thurstonvotes.org/).  I don't know if it's just Thurston County or statewide, but it's write-in votes only.  No more wire coat hangers in-person voting, ever! ;)
