The "costume" on the far left is a literary reference.  Can anyone figure it out?

I guess "The bread tray",
by Louis Pullig De Gouy (1944) is too obscure!

A modern Gretel preparing to go into the woods?

A pohibiton era "The Prophet" - no jug of wine.

The Catcher in the Rye?

Good eye - I missed the Mitt - thought it was a tray!

It depends - if it's animated it must be hosted elsewhere (like Photobucket), else (when the cache is not full) you can attach it in your reply.

I can't disagree more about "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue." I think it's a GREAT dance number, beautifully realized and performed. As I think Vera-Ellen was THE most talented female dancer in the history of Hollywood, naturally I think most of what she does is superb.

All of the numbers in WORDS & MUSIC are worth watching and give the film its only entertainment value. The "book" is such hogwash if you know the real stories of the two men.

I began my afternoon with last night's CSI: MIAMI. It was an OK case, and it was wonderful to welcome Ryan Wolfe back to the squad, but that was six episodes of unnecessary angst they put fans through for such an anticlimactic payoff. Very, very poor writing.

And, I believe Emily Procter has subjected herself to collagen injections. Her lips last night were much fuller than they've ever been (and the most unattractive they've ever been, too. I can't understand why folks do this to themselves.)

Next, I watched the Blu-ray version of THE SHINING. I talked about the movie some this morning, but I found it had lost nothing in its power to grip one's attention and hold it. The new 5.1 soundtrack (I listened to the lossless PCM 5.1 track) spreads that eerie music and sound effects around you now for some really effective atmospheric lifts and jolts.

As for the HD transfer, it seemed a bit brighter than I remembered the old full frame transfer to look. The colors are very solid, there's not a twitter in the tight weaves of the herringbone and corduroy coats Jack wears, but I did find the flesh tones a tiny bit on the red side.

Didn't have a chance to check out any of the new special features. I had watched Vivian Kubrick's documentary on the last DVD release of the film, but I've got that commentary and those other featurettes to look at tonight before prime time begins. Probably won't finish all of it until tomorrow.

Sounds like something I'd say ;)

Thank you, DR td, for your astute comments on THE SHINING. I'm looking forward to revisiting it this afternoon after many years away from it.

You're welcome.  And I believe you know how much I value your opinion.
I'm still stunned that I've had this remarkable turnaround on THE SHINING, though I really think that I shall never warm up to EYES WIDE SHUT - which I have seen, without expectation, still it has that Nicole Kidman factor, which means I'll probably NOT be trying it out anytime soon.
So with Kubrick I like 2001, BARRY LYNDON, THE SHINING and A CLOCKWORK ORANGE.  I still don't consider SPARTACUS to be "A Stanley Kubrick Film."

Surrounding "Slaughter on 10th Avenue" with lousy writing is holding to tradition - look at On Your Toes!

Yes, I know you were really refering to the whitewashing in the movie script.

I always liked "The Shining". I enjoyed the book and thought the maze was a good compromise/alternative to use in the film. It is my favourite Kubrick after 2001. I find Barry Lyndon so boring.
I loved the scenes with the kid on the tricycle rolling down those long hallways.

Ginny, I got CATCHER IN THE RYE, but Singdaw is too quick on the draw!

Love your costume!

I didn't know about Trick Or Treaters coming on Wed....I'd better go get something to feed the hordes.

I have a neighborhood meeting at 6:30, where I am expecting to hear some bad news about our piece of paradise. I got wind of it just an hour ago...I hope it's not true! More later...

The first time I saw THE SHINING in the theater with Danny riding his big wheel across those floors and carpets (weird sound  that this caused also a brilliant touch) being followed so closely with the Steadicam - well, I was on the edge of my seat. I just knew around any corner was going to be something shocking. Eventually, it was, but Kubrick, like always, took his time setting it up.
