Well, you've read the notes, the notes were stretched, and now it is time for you to post until the stretched cows come home.

I can never sleep very well when there are other people in my house.  I'm not sure why.  The cats are fascinated with the fact that there is very loud snoring coming from the guest room, lol

I downloaded the photos from tonight from the camera, but frankly it was set wrong and the friend who took the photos didn't notice, so most of them are blurry.  There are a couple I can play with and probably fix. There will be a photo in the Sioux City Business Journal and our building manager was there taking photos, so I'll get copies from them

DR Jose, yes there were lots of left overs, but the people ate a lot too.  I'd say maybe a little less than 1/2 of it was left.  I was very pleased with the turn out.  The people who did come were friends and then people who are in the Chamber of Commerce. Some I knew, but most of them I didn't know.  Everyone loved the office and I was able to get to know some people I probably wouldn't have had contact with otherwise.  I think from a business perspective (which is really what it was about) this was very successful.

I had a lot fo fun going through my "photos with famous people" that I have framed around the library/conference room. One of them is the photo of BK and I from my trip to L.A.

The most popular photo was me with The Naked Cowboy.

They made me put the photo of me with John Edwards in the corner, lol

I should probably try to go back to sleep.  We've got some plans this morning and then I have a busy afternoon at the office. I'm glad I went to all the trouble to get everything ready for this, but man, am I glad it's over.

I had a wonderful birthday with friends, and ended up taking a dance and exercise class with the one and only Richard Simmons!
It was a blast, and he is such a sweetheart. At the end of the evening, he had me stand and invited the entire group to sing Happy Birthday to me, and he added a most lovely harmony. Great fun!

LOST SPOILER:

They don't know where they are.

No, a volcano erupts and the whole island sinks into the ocean, killing everybody.

 ::)

BTW: I don't know if this is true or not, but somebody once told me that there was once a soap opera (probably on radio) that got canceled on short notice.  So, to tie up all the story ends, on the final episode, the writers put the entire cast in a bus that went off a cliff.

Does anybody know anything about that?  True or false?

Continuing last night's discussion about memoirs and liability:

You don't have to worry about people's estates because, according to the law, you can't libel a dead person.

Do you recall that terrible book that came out years ago that claimed Errol Flynn was a Nazi?

Flynn's daughters sued the author.  The case was not only thrown out of court, but the daughters had to pay the author's legal fees.

DR MattH, I read what you wrote about Lost last night (saying you loved the parallel universe thing). I think it is an
interesting concept. Although I personally found it slightly confusing, since I don't usually watch shows that have
alternate universes.  I think a lot of people that watch sci-fi might be more familiar with such things. But for me it
wasn't clear at first what was really happening.  I do totally agree with you that it was so great to get so see some
of the people that aren't on the show anymore.  In fact it was fantastic.  And watching the plane land and seeing
everyone meet each other for the first time was amazing. And I do get why the writers decided to still have an
alternate universe going on on the island. I mean the island is the show - so if everybody left it wouldn't be the
same show.  But i must say i was sort of confused by who the new group of people (who captured the Losties) are.  They did give us some answers. But i was not too happy with one of the people who died. I hope that won't be the last we see of her.  There really was a lot of information put out in one show.  one two three four one two three one

More on LOST

Not only did I NOT find it confusing, I was thrilled with the possibility of seeing the original story of the Oceanic 815 passengers play out while at the same time seeing the continuation of the original LOST story with characters we've grown to know and love in their present-day mode.

If you ever won a Grammy for one of your produced recordings, would you display the award in your home and, if so, where?

And since you have received Grammy nominations before, did you get a certificate of nomination? Do you have it displayed if so?

No, this is sweeps month, so I think most networks will be programming new content opposite the Olympics. The Winter Olympics has never garnered the staggeringly high ratings that the Summer Olympics do.

AMERICAN IDOL has never backed away from any competition on the other networks. Yes, there will be voting during those weeks just as usual.

Congrats to DR MBARNUM on his article publication!  What did Lisa have to say that you can share?

She suggested that Rod Taylor was a bit fresh, and that working for Roger Corman could be hazardous to your health.

Also, her first agent wanted her to attend parties and to do things there that she was not willing to do in order to further her career...so she left that agency and went to one that put her into a ton of TV westerns and B movies.

Question for bk:

If you ever won a Grammy for one of your produced recordings, would you display the award in your home and, if so, where?

And since you have received Grammy nominations before, did you get a certificate of nomination? Do you have it displayed if so?

I would display it proudly, probably on one of the fireplace mantels.  The nomination certificate hangs in the book room.

DR Jane, you're welcome. I can't wait to hear it. "Finian's" has always been one of my favorite scores. In ninth grade, back in the dark ages, it as a big deal that a couple of my classes was able to rent a movie to show. So, I saw the film back-to-back in (get this) Latin and then English. Don't ask the logic of it, but learning that music was wonderful.

And it really took me a full hour to get the problem resolved.  A full hour and seven different CSRs!  It's not worth going into the details, but...

1) If you are billed on one bill for two different services, then why can't you call ONE number to have both service disconnected?

2) What exactly is the difference between a "Finance Department" and a "Billing Department"?  I believe I spoke to two of each over the course of the hour.

3) If the account number matches the phone number, then why create a different account number for phone number once the service was disconnected?  -Without notifying the customer of such a change at the time of request of disconnection of service.

4) Once they've confirmed disconnection of service, why do they finish the phone call with, "Are there any other Verizon services that I could help you with?"  ::)

Yes.  End of rant.  Well...

6) Even though I had the confirmation code from when the service was disconnected back on January 11, they still had to bring up the original account information to "review the details".  Of course, since the account was now "disconnected" and "suspended"(?), only certain CSRs had access to the various details of the account.  The Key: "Push 1 - Three Times."

END OF RANT.

So what name was on the paper bill and what name was in the system?

Oh... Here's where it got even more confusing...

-The name in their computer system was the name of the former roommate who set up the account six years ago.
-The name on the paper bill was "transferred" over to another roommate four years ago, and to another roommate last year (after each roommate moved out accordingly).  But, somehow, those successive names were never transferred over in the Finance Department's records.  However, they were transferred over in the Billing Department's records.  -So, apparently, there is a difference.
-Additionally, the current name on the bill was entered last name first and first name last. In other words, it was reversed.  However...

None of the CSRs really seemed to care who's name was on the bill as long as the phone and account numbers were provided.  They just wanted the names to additionally confirm the proper account was coming up on their screens.  My name is not any of the accounts.  And I was able to close things out.  Go figure.

*And I was taking care of the Verizon stuff since my roommate who's name is on the bill got called into work this morning at 6:30AM(!?!?!?), and she's not allowed to make personal calls at work.  And since I was home today... In any case...

All done. Time to get ready for my trip to Memphis tomorrow morning.

Then I watched ONG-BAK: THE THAI WARRIOR.

Well, I knew going in that this kind of film is not really my kind of stuff. I do admire the athleticism of these guys, and their moves are phenomenal, a combination of martial arts and gymnastics that is just jaw-dropping.

But the plots of all these movies are always the same and after the set-up, it comes one confrontation after another. True, there was some nifty staging of one extended chase scene, but the fight scenes were really tedious after a while, and this was almost two hours long.

I chose this because the liner notes on the case showed only three bonus features. They lied! There were quite a few bonuses though, admittedly, none of them lasted longer than, say, six minutes, so I was still able to finish the entire disc by 3 p.m.

I am having real issues with both a sibling and a casual acquaintance.  Sibling:  completely non-involved in either my or my kids' lives (not even birthday cards), and out of the blue makes a patently transparent "reach out " call asking how many brothers Betsy has.  If she had reached out with an apology for ignoring my kids since they were born, I might feel differently.  This is especially irksome since I basically helped raise her kids when she was going through an ugly divorce.

Acquaintance:  someone who has had absolutely no compunction asking me for "favors" (several times in fact) that would help their projects/careers, etc.  When I asked the same in return (and in fact not even for me personally, just for someone I know), absolutely no response.  Guess what *my* response will be the next time this person needs something from me?  ;)

So, perhaps BK should kill off everyone he mentions by name.

In the February issue of MEN'S JOURNAL, NBC's Chairman of Sports Dick Ebersol was quoted:

What broadcasting innovation are you most proud of?

"It isn't a piece of machinery or anything technical, but the "Megaseg", which I came up with to address the biggest hump to get over in our Olympic broadcast, which happens around 11 o'clock when everyone goes to bed.  What I did was stagger the commercials so that beginning at 5 to 11 we can go without a commercial break for 25 or even up to 50 minutes - that way the viewers never stop watching. It really ends up being a gift for the people who've stayed with us up to that point, because you get to see the ultimate events without interruption."

NOW - where do those commercials go?  Did the FCC give him permission to put EXTRA commercials in the 8 p.m. - 11 p.m. time period (at higher rates than late night) - I can't think it's a gift - someone is seeing extra commercials....he isn't giving that time away....they couldn't sell it at any price?  So they sell high priced EXTRA commercials during the prime time broadcast.

It's a strange thing to be the most proud of, Mr Ebersol.

PT went well except i didn't stretch farther than the last session.  since my biggest concern, aside from pain, is lack of mobility i don't like when there isn't progress.  i was stronger which of course is good.  the downside to stronger, as the muscles tighten it is more difficult to stretch them.

he adjusted a few of my exercises making them more difficult.  i do this one exercise there using pulleys.  i slowly pull down with the left arm making my right arm go up.  i've gotten so good at it today i just lifted my body off the chair.  my reward was a strap to hold my right shoulder down so only the arm went up.  suddenly it wasn't easy anymore ;D

I have as of this moment finished my new book.  519 manuscript pages, although that could change when I go back and read what I wrote.  Also, I'm still going to go back over all my original notes, which I actually never looked at while writing, and see if I missed anything important.  If I did, I'll plug whatever it is in in the appropriate place.  I am quite emotional right now, as I always am at the finish.  I knew it might be today - I could have stretched it out until tomorrow, but I just barreled ahead and finished.  I'm sure I'll have to smooth out stuff and make some fixes, additions, and subtractions, but it's done.  I don't think I'll print the pages for muse Margaret until Friday, because if I give them to her tomorrow night, I won't be around for her phone call, since I'll be off to see Camelot.

Guess what *my* response will be the next time this person needs something from me?  ;)

RE: the sibling is it possible she is trying to make peace?  I would let her and maybe try to explain how you are feeling.

re: the acquaintance, i would wait till the next time they ask for a favor and remind them that you asked them for one. And see what they say!

The chicken pot pie actually turned out really good. It was from the Kraft magazine.

You put 1 can of cream of something soup, 3 cups frozen veggies, 2 cups shredded cheese, and 2-3 cups cooked chicken cubbed.

You mix that together and then break apart those pilsbury crescents and bake it on top for like 25 minutes on 375F (brush a beaten egg on it to get it brown).

It was surprisingly delicious.

I just revised the epilogue - I found that I'd overwritten it and that two entire paragraphs were unnecessary - gone they went and I hated the penultimate paragraph, so I finally got that just right.  And now I shall go finish The Music Man and then later I may go over what I wrote today.  Or not.  Might just do it tomorrow at my leisure.

Late yesterday afternoon I received several plants and a nice bouquet of flowers.  They were all from the small little flower shop that I usually go to.  No wonder they were all smiles when I picked up the center piece for the table very early yesterday afternoon

:), nice of your friends.

Interesting fact of the day.

A lot has been made of all the millions that Avatar has made in the past two or so months. It is #1 in the USA and the world

BUT!!!

If you take into account box office grosses adjusted for today's dollars

Avatar is only #21 on the all time money making list.

Top Ten are
Gone With The Wind
The Sound of Music
ET
The Ten Commadments
Titanic
Jaws
Doctor Zhivago
The Exorcist
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

I think that this is the list so people can see how todays movies stack up to the films of the past.

I learned that symbols as "interbang," but it never really gained much practical use even though in theory it is certainly approrpate when the question you're asking is also something exclaimed:

"Did you see that" which could use either ? or ! but the symbols for both would be most appropriate.

I just got back from BILOXI BLUES. It's still a funny and touching play. Amazing that Neil Simon won his first Best Play Tony for it. (He won "Best Author" for THE ODD COUPLE but Best PLay that year went to THE SUBJECT WAS ROSES).

This production was blessed with a terrific Sgt. Toomey. Eugene was good but was a trifle soft in delivery. The Arnold Epstein was also wonderful.

lol, no thanks.  i'm still baffled by the gift & that you have no idea which friend would find it funny.  maybe they won it and put it in your name instead, hard to imagine paying for it and not taking credit for the gag. ;D

Now I'm not personally condoning (or admitting  ;D ) this, but let's just say someone bid on some weight loss videos on eBay and then never responded to numerous emails requesting payment.  Let's say the seller then sent one of the official eBay final fee value credit requests in, which triggers an automatic suspension of a buyer's account (or did in those days).  Let's say the "buyer" then sent a vitriolic email claiming they had a) never bid on nor won the item (despite the clear proof they had); and b) had never received an invoice or any followup emails (which in fact they had, and since they seller and buyer at that point were both on AOL, a "read receipt" was included with several of the followups).  Let's just say all of that happened.  And the seller waited.  And then about a year later ordered the buyer a nice gift subscription to Gourmet as well as the Cookbook's Book Club (with several high fat books ordered as the first shipment).  Let's just say that all happened and let's just say it makes me laugh.

I started crying when Hearn sang "Welcome Home" and didn't stop till the final tableau when the song was sadly reprised. I hope it's a huge success for everyone.

Yum!  Nothing better than cream of something soup!

Nothing says "I love you" or "I'm sorry" like Cream of Something soup!

I used to love chicken pot pie.  I think it was Broadway (which is long gone) Dept. Store in Century City that had a fountain style food counter & served a suburb chicken pot pie.  they also made a great orange float type drink.  i used to make them at home too, orange sherbet & milk topped with soda water.  the last time i could get one of these was at a deli in michigan, about 20 years ago.

Kind of like an orange egg cream!

Actually, I believe a good chunk of those commercials go after the megaseg.  -It's a long enough chunk of time for someone to go to the bathroom and/or get a bite to eat or something to drink after sitting there for all that time.

*And what he fails to mention - at least in that snippet - is that it also helps the ratings in both the prime time and late night slots.

this is a little about the lady on my office door. Themis - Goddess of Justice. And a link to a page that has a photo of the Themis statue we used for inspiration.

Quote
About Themis - Goddess of justice    In Greek religion, Themis was the personification of justice, the goddess of wisdom and good counsel, and the interpreter of the gods’ will.

According to some sources, she was the daughter of Uranus (Heaven) and Gaea (Earth). She was Zeus’s second consort and by him, the mother of the Horae.

On Olympus, Themis maintained order and supervised ceremonies. She was a giver of oracles, and one legend relates that she once owned the oracle at Delphi but later gave it to Apollo.

The cult of Themis was widespread in Greece. She was - and still is - represented as a woman of sober appearance carrying the scales of justice and a sword as a symbol of justice enforcement.

TCB I find it hard to imagine someone wouldn't inquire if it is a gag.  Are you sure it was for you?  I thought gift subscriptions usually included a gift card.

It has my name and address on the label.  They apparently didn't say it was a gift, but just ordered it in my name and paid for it.

There was a rash of mystery gift subscriptions of "Time Out: New York" last year here in New York City.  We ended up with a free year of the magazine here at the apartment, and found out that at least five our friends also "mysteriously" started receiving subscriptions.  Thankfully, we all liked the magazine and just accepted the mystery gift.

I won't look at it again until mid next week.  Then I'll read it and see how it flows all at once.  I will probably ask muse Margaret to do the same, but we've already been through it multiple times - I tend to not go on until I'm completely happy and I sometimes rewrite things ten or twenty times before moving on.  By the time I finish, it's not really a first pass.  All the books have been that way.

Not true, but this is also not that reliable since I doubt that they applied differing amounts of adjustments for the reissues these movies have gone through over the years.

The fairest method of registering most popular films would be through the number of actual ticket sales per film down through the years. AVATAR has somewhat inflated prices due to its premium admissions via 3-D. But if they could count ticket sales down through the years, that's a statistic I WOULD believe.

Yes, DR Dakota, one thing I think you can always count on is that folks always love to see regulars return to HHW. You might get a slight rebuff while you're away, but never once you're back.

I don't think I mentioned it earlier but I did finally get my shipping notice from Amazon for THE MUSIC MAN/FINIAN'S RAINBOW on Tuesday. That means I won't see it until Monday since my postman doesn't seem to like to deliver packages on Saturday.
