I'd give more details about our dealings with the airline, but I'm reluctant to give them on a public chat board lest I subject myself to charges of libel or slander.  We did, however, get a lesson as to what we SHOULD have done as soon as we saw the long line, and that was be more vocal earlier, because the lady at the counter cared not a whit after the fact.    There was no help on the line at all, and the lady behind the counter seemed as annoyed as anyone that she was stuck with only two people (her and one otehr person) helping a long long line.

That is so wrong, FJL!  This isn't even "peak" season yet and they're having those kinds of problems?

YIKES!

Our sympathies to FJL and Skip.

Another reason for our taking a train across North America from E to W rather than fly. (We did consider train from W to E and then a flight!)

There are far less delays etc when you are "processed" to leave the USA rather than traveling to or through!  So many people miss flight connections.  It is a "people" and organisation problem.  We are all aware of the need for security.  A three hour wait can now be seen as usual.

How very sad for Fred and Skip.

That's such a terrible shame, FJL. This security thing is just getting out of control. Now they are talking about letting non-ticketed people go to the gates. That will just clog up the security lines even more.

I have had the pleasure (ha!) of flying lately, but I haven't had any trouble with long security lines. So far. I will have to do some traveling over the next few years. I hope it gets better.

I have a friend who stood in a security line almost three hours and missed her flight.

DR FJL - I'm so sorry you aren't on your way to California.  What a bummer.

The security thing is completely out of control.  It's why I always arrive at the airport at least two hours early, sometimes three - I'm just a nervous traveler in that way.  The fact is, the airline should have done whatever was necessary - first off, taking those who had pressing flights first.  Barring that, they should have switched FJL and Skip to another flight or airline.  But common courtesy is a thing of the past, I'm afraid.  I'm not afraid, however, of slander and libel because there isn't any - it's simply the truth and the truth cannot be refuted.  THEY are responsible and it is THEIR job to make it right when they screw up like this.

And now for something completely different:

HERE

is the podcast that we created at the workshop I attended on Wednesday.  What's amazing is that it's a bunch of librarians, doing a cold reading of a never-before-seen script.  It was recorded, edited, and uploaded in a matter of about 15 minutes.  I'm the mayor.

And of course the airlines have to overbook every flight so that they they'll always have a full flight and not lose money and that just compounds the problem. :P

True enough.

But something I've noted when flying is that a lot (LOT) of people don't check in at the airport earlier than 30 minutes before the flight.  This causes jam-ups and delayed takeoffs.

The day has grayed over, the wind has kicked up and rain has been falling the past hour or so.

It's supposed to be colder tonight and tomorrow.

All this talk of travel woes has stirred up some anxieties in me re: my flight Wednesday evening.

Sigh.

Calm....calm....get there early, be organized and chill.

FJL: why didn't you get on a later flight? Would they not give you that option?

Doggone, Fred and Skip! I was looking very forward to seeing you guys!! I can only image the frustration you must be feeling as that is always a fear of mine...not only do I start packing days and days before I have to go someplace, but I tend to get to the airport way, way too early because I am always afraid of bad traffic or some hold up at the airport.

I must now dress for dinner and the play. I hope it is air conditioned in the theater because I tell you what, even in shorts and short sleave shirt I was sweating like a pig during my jaunt in Studio City today....but I loved the sun!!
