Well, you've read the notes, the notes were nothing to sneeze at, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently sneezing and will be home shortly.
-
And the word of the day is: FLEXUOUS!
-
Suitable subject heading for me. What with the sneeezing, coughing, sore throat and sinus pain, I hardly got any sleep last night. It seemed as if the night would never end (or is that an Oscar viewing line?).
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Pain-be-gone vibes for Doug R.
-
Great blurb, DR CharlesPogue.
-
TOD:
Not seeing Billy Crystal do blackface (since I didn't see the show).
-
Good Morning. It's Monday, but I shall rise aove. Oh yes, I shall rise above. :)

The New York Times finally got around to writing about Howard Kissel, and the piece is very good.

Pain-be-gone vibes for Doug R.
Thank you John!

Feel better, Doug R

Hi all. Well today is the day I head to NYC! I am sorry that I don't think I will be able to meet with you, Larry. I was told yesterday that I have to adhere to their schedule and can not change it. Since I am to be escorted during my stay there I can't go anywhere they don't come too until I am safely back on the plane home.
I can't really talk about anything else from this point on. I had to sign a legal but I'm guessing that anything I said up to the point I signed it is ok. I didn't know. I've never done this before. I don't think I'm going to be allowed to post anything while I'm there either.
Thank you all for the good wishes. I guess my life will change for the better or the worse after these next couple of days. I just pray it isn't worse. I can't take to much more worse. I'm ready for better! :)
So I guess you all will see me on March 1st!

Break a leg, Danise!!!

Good morning, all! Since I thnk the only film I'd seen last year was THE HELP, I had no urge to watch the Oscars, so I watched COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER as one more prep for the Appalachian Chistmas show. I'd never seen the dilm before and I really enjoyed it. The cast is wonderful. I would have never recognized the amazing Beverly D'Angelo as Patsy Cline, but I thought the wholecast was quite wonderful. The film begins around 1949 which is around the time my father started going back to Kentucky to see his mother, and I found the movie quite a nostalgia trip as well as a good biopic.
I've got work around the apartment today: the Dance Scene from ROBERTA seems endless, although I know it isn't, and I'm hoping we can resolve the cause of the problem.
I've been feeling emtionally down for the past week; I hope it's overwork and fatique as opposed to a depression or malaise coming on.

DR Danise, I am sorry to hear that I may not see you, but I hope you have the time of your life as a celebrity and that this appearance will help to resolve all problems caused by what that creep did to you and others. Have a safe trip and come back again for fun!

Travel and show vibes for DR DANISE!
Feel better vibes for DR DOUG R.
I myself am doing much better!

DR ELMORE if you haven't seen SWEET DREAMS, you may find the first hour or so of that movie entertaining as well....some of it looks very familiar, so the town may have been seen in some other movie....maybe CMD.
And Ann Wedgeworth's accent is perfect.
-
I enjoyed most of the speeches.....I wish Jean hadn't gone crazy at the end of his speech, but otherwise it was great.
I did not enjoy any of Mr Crystal's participation or any of the "banter" the presenters were given. Lowest point was Paltrow and Downey, Jr - although competition was stiff for the worst.....
The LOWEST LOW point was Mr Cohen on the red carpet dumping ashes onto Ryan Seacrest - who I usually don't like, but who was just doing his job and will now end up in Cohen's stupid movie.....

Thanks, DR JRand61! I'll add it to Netflix.

Monday morning greetings! It's a bee-yoo-tee-ful day here in SW Ohio. Richard and I are going to the
vampire's lab for blood tests and then out to breakfast.
-
Travel vibes to DR Danise - give my regards to Broadway!
-
Bon voyage vibes for DR Danise!
And breaking of legs, too!
-
Beverly is better as Patsy in CMD - but Jessica has her moments in Sweet Dreams - mostly the acting....and in SD, we never even see Loretty.
-
DR JRand - last night you asked about the book THE HELP. I'd recommend the audiobook.
-
I had guests during the first hour or so of the Oscars. After they left, I watched until Woody Allen won for Original Screenplay. Then I found myself overwhelmingly sleepy and went to bed.
I found Billy Crystal's hosting antics to be only mildly amusing (my only laugh out loud moment was his voicing the thoughts of Nick Nolte.) He pretty much just repeated schtick he had done years before.
I would have picked Christopher Plummer's acceptance speech as my favorite if only it hadnt come across as being so over-rehearsed. My actual favorite moment came when the guys who won for editing THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO were at a loss for words and wound up saying "Let's get out of here!"
-
I am surprised that they are being so strict with DR Danise. I figured they would just give her some money for meals and leave her on her own. Why would they bring someone to NYC and not let them go around and do what they want when they are not taping?
-
TOD:
I forget the exact line, but my wife and I LOL at Crystal's quip right after the Academy president (Tom Shereck) make his short speech mid-show.
For us, it was the biggest laugh of the night.

Feel better vibes for DR DougR~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
Feel better, Doug R
Thanks FJL!
-
Looking forward to seeing Fashion Police tonight. Although they always love Michelle Williams and Angelina Jolie. So I am sure they wll like them again. Two of my favs were the two Best Supporting Actress nominees from The Help. Loved both of those. My worst was definitely Melissa M from Bridesmaids. I just hated that dress so much. Interesting how Octavia Spencer can dress so beauifully for her size.

Feel better vibes for DR DOUG R.
I myself am doing much better!
Thank you DR Jrand61

Thank you DR Jennifer. On the mend now I think.

TOD - between chatting here in BK's living room and knitting, I tuned out most of the Oscar broadcast except when they were actually presenting awards. I did like the Cirque du Soliel, mostly because my friend has talked a lot about her daughter's experience working at the Kodak. Billy Crystal was mildly amusing, but I found most of the presenter banter excruciating to listen to.
-
Break a leg, Danise. And I hope your appearance helps others.
-
What is the big uproar about Billy Crystal doing his impression of Sammy Davis, Jr. (Not minstrelly blackface)...an impression that he has being doing since before his Saturday Night Live days. Do people just rabidly seek out offence? This is a rather innocuous reason for outrage...
-
TOD - between chatting here in BK's living room and knitting, I tuned out most of the Oscar broadcast except when they were actually presenting awards.
I watched the recording I'd made on my hard drive and as usual I fast forwarded through most of the film clips and entertainment pieces. It's only the awards I'm interested in as well Ginny and I wish they would concentrate on those. For that reason, I far prefer how the BAFTA awards are done.
-

I liked the beginning of the Cirque du Soliel segment but, as broadcast, it didn't seem to go any where for me. It was probably far more outstanding for those viewing it in the theatre.
-
Cirque must have used the same rigging they provided for the production of PETER PAN I did here a few years ago--Peter was able to fly out over the audience, almost touching the second balcony at the back of the theater. It was incredible to watch from the pit.

Outrage!!!!
-
Just thought I would put my two cents in.
-
Has DR JOSE deserted us for River City?
-
I was e&t last night during the Oscar Broadcast. Family dinner, etc. We had a lovely time, watched bits and pieces of the Oscars while sharing time with family, which we don't do enough.
Travel and show vibes for DR DANISE!
-
Did Ryan Seacrest continue his hosting duties after the event? Or did he leave his post.....when I turned back for a moment the girls were having some kind of round table discussion.
-
Oscars:
I thought Crystal was a bit cheesy...or is moldy a better word. He's fun, true...but even in his last appearances, Bob Hope's corny jokes topped what Crystal dished out last night.
I liked some of the technical wizardry employed...loved the conductor's score graphic with the swirling notes, etc., during the music presentation.
I detested the necrology portion...especially the opening when we were supposed to be seeing a tribute to those who had passed, but instead, we were forced to wait while they established a live singer (whose identity is unknown to me) and a choir backup. What was THAT all about?
I think there was one suprise. I had expected to hear Viola Davis' name for best actress. Oddsmakers had assured everyone she would win. And Friday, I read a story online that had the headline "How Viola Davis stole Meryl Streep's Oscar"...accompanied by a lovely shot of Streep with Davis on a red carpet at some point this season. The story was totally not about a theft...but about Streep's glowing comments about Davis' performance that seemed to shift sentiments toward Davis. At any rate, I was delighted to see Streep take the stage. After an awkward attempt to stifle the standing "O", I thought her speech was moving and very gracious.
Happily, it was all over by 9 p.m. here on the Left Coast.
Oh, yes...silly me. I thought the necrology was to reflect on people who had made significant contributions to motion pictures. Yet, there was Whitney Houston. Do "The Preacher's Wife" and "The Bodyguard" count as significant contributions to motion pictures? I know. I'm chasing my [virtual] tail.
-
And who recorded the first English language version of WAVE? Oscar snubbee Sergio Mendes, who wuz ROBBED! :)
-
The singer last night was Portland's own Esperanza Spaulding, who won the Grammy Best New Artist Award last year. She's faboo.
-
Well, THE BODYGUARD made soundtrack history, at least.
-
I found some of the other choices much odder--like the Marketing Analyst. What's up with that?
-
What I really appreciated this year was the absolute lack of applause during the segment--they must have chided the audience. It's not a popularity contest, it's a remembrance.

Sammy used to impersonate white guys.

Since I didn't even record the awards this year I skipped last nights posts. I hope I didn't miss anything important not pertaining to the awards.

Everyone on DOWNTON ABBEY died of the bubonic plague, nothing real important. :o

The DP zipped through both seasons of Downton this weekend. Wonder what the "fuss" was about... he quickly learned. And now he's ticked that we have to wait a year for season 3!!

Page 3.
I won't dance, don't ask me!
Not a tango, not the Charleston, not a foxtrot or a waltz!
-
Fun things during last night's Oscar block:
Three hilarious JCP commercials with Ellen DeGeneres!
And a super-terrific tease -- produced in dramatic fashion -- for "Revenge"!
-
I'm actually wondering if the third season of DOWNTON will start in January 2013 or perhaps earlier. Has anyone seen any definitive news?
The problem is, as I'm sure you're aware, the world ends on December 21, 2012, making viewing after that somewhat difficult.
-
I think having a SINGER during the memorial helped quell the urge to applaud.
-
I seem to remember them clapping last year during Queen Latifah, though.
-
That may have been to drown out the singing, though.
-

BBC just says Season Three will air sometime early in 2013.

I've been in a few shows with people I would have liked to send soaring over the front row.

BK: Bource not only shook Williams' hand before taking the stage, he preceded that handshake by shaking hands with Alberto Iglesias and Howard Shore. A very lovely gesture!

Why focus on such limitations? Look past these petty hindrances.

Hello to all my lovely fans. I'd just like to take a moment to state on this website devoted to ME that any reports of me misbehaving last night at the awards ceremony devoted to ME are highly exaggerated. Why they throw these awards bashes and then fail to give me an award is beyond my comprehension and I do tend to get a little upset. Just to prove how lovely as ever I was, here's a recent pic:

Season Three is currently filming (or glicing, as I originally fat-fingered.). Season Two was first broadcast last September in Great Britain. PBS probably will delay until January so that they'll have plenty of time to make some irrational cuts to each episode.
BTW, DR JMK, is the Christmas Special on the final disc of the Season Two set? I saw that it was being sold separately on Amazon (Region 2 only.)

Yes, Christmas Special is included, at least on the Blu-ray version.

That looks like the UK version, Dan. If you read the comments below, one of them states the Christmas episode is on the US version, and, having already watched it and not being quite that delusional, I can confirm it is. :)

I did, DR Jane, much better - thanks for asking. I also ate better yesterday. On Saturday I'd really only had brunch and an early dinner and, looking back, I think hunger might have been part of my problem in the middle of the night.

Here is a photo of Nick Clooney (Rosemary's brother/George's dad) with the young woman who plays Rosemary in Dayton's production of TENDERLY:

Was Nick the host on AMC before Osborne? I seem to remember seeing him in days of yore.

I have to plan a trip to Baltimore for some time next week. I'm thinking Wednesday.

And the second blurb, from Rupert Holmes:
"Just as Frank Sinatra had an additional and invaluable career as the great preservationist and evangelist of the American popular song (with particular focus on the Lost and Found), so author-actor-singer-director Bruce Kimmel has additionally served the cause of Broadway and Hollywood beyond measure, producing some of the most memorable vocalists of our time in recordings that give new life to music that might otherwise be forgotten, while renewing and revitalizing the theatrical canon with his impeccable taste and unerring musicality. In his usual engaging and endearing style, he at last gives us a first-hand view of his process. For this terrific chronicle, and for his immeasurable contribution to musical theatre, we can only give our most inadequate thanks."
-
Very nice, BK!
-
Nice blurbs.
Yes DR JMK - Nick Clooney was the host on AMC back when it was a no-commercials movie channel....mostly Fox films.
-
DR GINNY - I have to agree, that don't look nothing like Rosemary ever looked.
-
Beautiful blurb, and it didn't put us in. . .WIDESCREEN. ;)
-
Does the Rosemary piece go into her affair with Riddle?
-
DR GINNY - I have to agree, that don't look nothing like Rosemary ever looked.
But she does resemble Adolph Green in the gums.

Great pair of blurbs, BK.

Did Ryan Seacrest continue his hosting duties after the event? Or did he leave his post.....when I turned back for a moment the girls were having some kind of round table discussion.
I commented about this last night. I found it very odd that they did a round table discussion for most of the last hour. I cannot remember them ever doing that before. They always continue Red carpet interviews right up till the Oscars start. Ryan Seacrest did do one or two more interviews after the incident. And he came on with Guiliana at the end of the pre show. But I still found it very odd that he did not do interviews right up till the show.

So, tomorrow is National Pancake Day. That begs the question, should I make red velvet pancakes or pineapple upside down pancakes?

Thinking about the show last night:
Did anybody else think that the direction was terrible?
Where were the audience reaction shots when you needed them?

I just got a contract (with check) to write a new screenplay.

I'm surprised that nobody on this board commented on the death of Farley Granger when he was shown in the memorial segment of the Oscars.
-
BK, was your choice of a Wolfgang Puck salad intended to be your own Governor's Ball dinner?
-
DR Doug R, I have the same sort of miserable flu that you have. Now I know who to blame!
Jose.

Feel better vibes, Doug R.
-
Does the Rosemary piece go into her affair with Riddle?
Yes, DR JMK, it does and there were a few gasps from the audience when his name was first mentioned.
-
For the first time in ages, I watched the Oscar coverage on the East Coast, instead of California. It was quite different--not a surprise, really, but in L.A., the coverage continues after the Oscars for many hours, with the Governor's Ball, Vanity Fair party, etc.
Really a bit strange to see the regular news coverage and not much more when the broadcast was over.
-
Nice blurbs from Pogue and Rupert Holmes.
-
Anybody watching SMASH tonight?
This is the episode that is supposed to take the show into a different, and hopefully interesting direction.
-
I was surprised to learn that the adoption plot on Smash is based on the true life experience of the show's creator.
I never really believed that part of the show.
-
Danise, enjoy New York! Looking forward to watching your segment on Anderson's show.
Good for him, "keeping 'em honest".

I saw pix. I also read about the screenwriters who mocked her poutiness and pose. And I heard she enjoyed the joke. That's even classier.

eBay item arrived. A Farfisa accordion. It works... sorta. Some of the "stops" don't work, I'm hoping it just needs to be cleaned inside and make sure all the wires are connected. It was still a good price, can't complain.

Cool. I love accordion music, especially in tangos.

I have not heard or read anything about anyone being upset about Crystal's Sammy Davis impersonation.
-
TOD:
Seeing the teary eyed actress from the Iranian film that won best foreign film.
The emotional speech by Octavia Spencer. I like it when the crying is for real!
Seeing how pretty Michelle Williams is!
Seeing how pretty George Clooney is!
Viola Davis' green dress....my vote goes to it for most beautiful gown of the evening!
And who was that gorgeous hunk of man sitting next to Viola Davis???!!!
-
Things I liked least about last night's Oscars:
The in memoriam....surely more noteworthy actors/actresses died last year then the 3 or 4 shown!
Billy Crystal's opening...just wasn't very funny to me.

I've shaved my beard off. Not for any particular reason but I just felt like something to do. I've left the moustache (perhaps I've been influenced from watching all those Errol Flynn films).

Is this something you did today? Is it possible that it was because of the Oscars going to French filmmakers? ;)

Anybody watching SMASH tonight?
This is the episode that is supposed to take the show into a different, and hopefully interesting direction.
Having failed in the ratings, this has been their ploy to get viewership up - basically saying "Oops, forgive the first three shows, NOW we know what we're doing." I don't think so.
-
Had a sandwich and fries, and have written half the contextual commentary. Rehearsal begins soon.

Wouldn't this episode have been in the can long before the first episodes even aired? ???
-
eBay item arrived. A Farfisa accordion. It works... sorta. Some of the "stops" don't work, I'm hoping it just needs to be cleaned inside and make sure all the wires are connected. It was still a good price, can't complain.
Cool. I actually used to take accordion lessons back when I was 7 or 8 years old.
:)

Of course and that's my point. They are now flailing, doing whatever they can to PR up the merde out of this episode, saying "you'd better tune in because we've been SAVING this one for you and NOW the series will be great from here on in." Sorry, they can't just dismiss the first three episodes that they were formerly touting as brilliant until they crashed in the ratings.
-
Q: What's the range of an accordion?
A: How good is your arm? ;)
-
So, tomorrow is National Pancake Day. That begs the question, should I make red velvet pancakes or pineapple upside down pancakes?
Pineapple upside down. I've never had them but they sure sounds good.
-
BTW:
I just got a contract (with check) to write a new screenplay.
:)
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
-
DR Doug R, I have the same sort of miserable flu that you have. Now I know who to blame!
Jose.
;D
FEEL BETTER VIBES~
-
I just got a nice shipment of new Uni 100 releases. The bad news is it doesn't look like there will be BDs of MY MAN GODFREY or SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS.
-
Congrats to Druxy!!!

I wonder if this aspect of SMASH feeling like a show that starts slow and picks up is based in part on the NY Times review, although that said it picks up in Episode 3. This was from the NY Times review of SMASH by Neil Genzlinger:
" But it soon found its voice, and the audience found it. “Smash” gets better as it goes along. It’s unlikely to achieve television greatness like “M*A*S*H” did, but by Episode 3 it shows signs of becoming an addictive pleasure along the lines of this season’s “Revenge.” "
-
Hello, everyone.
I, too, had a good night's sleep and a most productive morning. How nice!
-
Feel-better vibes to all who need them!
-
Congrats to DR Druxy!! (Checks are always nice.)
-
DR George, I hope you find your wallet!

Great blurbs!

Well, there's the problem right there: they should have called it S*M*A*S*H.
-
Cirque must have used the same rigging they provided for the production of PETER PAN I did here a few years ago--Peter was able to fly out over the audience, almost touching the second balcony at the back of the theater. It was incredible to watch from the pit.
I remember when it was a thrill just to see Sandy Duncan soar over the front row of the orchestra.
I've been in a few shows with people I would have liked to send soaring over the front row.
;D Given the stories you've told, I don't doubt that.

I guess I missed this while skipping the Oscar posts.

Hmmmm....one episode of "Revenge" hooked me...and that was four weeks ago. I saw episode 3 of ""Smash" and wondered "What-The-Hell".
Maybe....just maybe...something starts clicking tonight.
Let me know tomorrow. I can always catch it on "On Demand".
-
TTFN.

Nice seeing Jeanne!
-
Red Velvet pancakes are going to win out tonight, simply because I'm at a friend's house and she has the ingredients. And the recipe. And sometimes having both of those helps.

TOD:
And who was that gorgeous hunk of man sitting next to Viola Davis???!!!
Don't you mean Octavia Spencer?
Well, the guy sitting with Octavia was handsome also, but this is the guy I was thinking of, which it turns out is her husband Julius Tennon.

that picture doesn't really do him justice.
-
I have not heard or read anything about anyone being upset about Crystal's Sammy Davis impersonation.
It's all over Huffpost...
I read about it on Huffpost, but it was just referring to some tweets that were questioning it. So I don't really think anyone credible was caring one way or another about it. In fact why Huffpost thought it was worthy of a headline is beyond me...but I guess it did make people click and read...of course (and I like Huffinton Post) but a lot of their headlines are quite misleading, I have found.
-
DR George, I hope you find your wallet!
Thanks! So do I...and still (fortunately) there hasn't been any activity with my debit card. :)

Thanks, Jane. If you go to the next to the last day at the bottom of the page, you'll see my post about it...or you can click HERE (http://www.haineshisway.com/smf/index.php?topic=3155.msg798319#msg798319). :D

It probably was mentioned because it was "trending"...whatever the hell that means.

But is there any THE THING THAT COULDN'T DIE (1958) or THE CAT CREEPS (1946)? Those are what Universal really needs to start releasing.
-
Turns out Julius Tennon is an actor...hmmm...might need to think about adding him to my list of interviewees.
It is darn near impossible to find a photo of him on the internet where his wife is not attached to his hip....this might make my fantasy desire ability to interview him a bit more difficult.

Please share!
-
We're playing around with this recipe:
http://www.foodrepublic.com/2011/09/17/red-velvet-pancakes-recipe
Every red velvet cake I've ever made puts a touch of vinegar in the buttermilk, which I think they get around by using sour cream. We're modifying that slightly. And will probably whip the cream cheese for the topping with a touch of vanilla and add some pecans.

I'm glad you said that. She looks fantastic.

Well, I'm off to the theater to see if my wallet is there. :-\
Wish me luck!
Be back later.

The following is a public service announcement:
-
Tomorrow, on National Pancake Day, you can enjoy a free stack of buttermilk pancakes at any IHOP.
-
Fingers crossed for DR George!!
-
They do state that they would like people to contribute to the Children's Miracle Network Hospital.
-
George, I hope you find your wallet.
-
Elmore, why do you need to go to Baltimore?
I grew up there, fled as soon as possible.
-
Thanks for all of the feel better vibes. They should help, along with NyQuil.
-
We don't have an IHOP near us.
-
Oh, no, Jane.
Maybe John G will share his red velvet pancakes with you.
:)
-
They sound delicious.
-
Cirque du Soleil doesn't really work well on tv, only live.
Sort of like fireworks.
-
Signing off for the night. The NyQuil is spacing me out.
Vibes to all who need them!
-

;D
I would rather have DR John G's pancakes than the ones from IHOP.
-
Thank you Iris for that lovely public announcement I will however not be able to go to IHOP as I plan to break into John G's house and eat all his Red Velvet pancakes
-

Did you check under your car seat?

You do realize you will have to go to Texas to commit the crime and it might be easier to find an IHOP on Long Island!!!
-

Baltimore Historical Society and Ford's Theatre programs from the 1920s.

Travel Vibes to Elmore
I won't be going down there until maybe next Thursday, March 7! Thanks for the vibes!
-
So you'll be gone just in time for my visit. Figures. At least I'll see FJL for sure - everyone else seems to be too busy for the likes of me, where they always seem to have time for any other of our visitors. And I bathe and everything.

Has anyone read or seen a quicklit? Instead of re-reading a big paperback I could get this on my Nook for only $2.99. The question is do I want it.

It seems to me it is a guide to read along side the actual book - may be I misread the blurb
-
I can' click on DR Jane' link. Hopefully i will remember to check tomorrow morning.
-
DR George I hope you find your wallet.

The one thing I did not like about Viola's dress was the bustline. To me her bust is too big. I would have liked it better if the top went straight across.

I come in on March 10 and leave early morning on 13th.

Ahhhh the Estherville Midgettes (from my home town) lost the first game in the Iowa State Girls Basketball Tournament. They lost to the Western Christian Wolfpack.
-
A Midgette is a female Midget. Yes, we still have the politically incorrect mascot and we're proud of our midgets
-
Not that anyone wanted to know that.

Night, all.

DR George I hope you find your wallet.
My wallet was at the theater!! Thanks, Jane, Iris, Vixmom and Jennifer! It turns out that for some stupid reason, I put my wallet in my act one pants! I've never done that before...and when I changed my pants, I didn't realize that my wallet was in my back pocket. Very strange. Anyway, all is well and I don't have to call my credit union to get a new card. :D
-
My favorite moment was Octavia Spencer's reaction to winning the Oscar
Ditto!

Ok. Add this one to the list of posts that I don't understand.
-
Hey...I'm a Laura quote! Cool! Thanks, Laura! :D
-
Glad wallet was safe.
-
I've watched a motion picture, I've finalized a CD booklet, I've done flap copy, I've had a nice rehearsal, and now I'm playing until its time to post the notes.
