For once, I actually have some media going on media day. Bought the Residents CD entitled "Not Available," which I used to have on vinyl long ago. It's a song cycle about a porcupine.

DVD, I bought THE TALES OF HOFFMAN, because Elmore showed me a bit of it when I was helping him get his DVD player going, and it looked pretty nifty.

CAPTURING THE FRIEDMANS, yeah, I watched that movie and when it was over I didn't know what I knew about anything in that sad affair. A real mind trip.

JRand, hilarious commentary on THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS. It's as painful to type that title as I imagine it would be to actually watch the film!

Would love to have seen the "Kismet" production.
When I was kid I loved "And This is My Beloved" and still do.

I don't think Homer & Jethro did "Strange Looking Parasite" from the show.

They did the music justice. Stirring version of that song, which I think I first heard on a Mario Lanza LP.

And the hit of "Baubles Bangles and Beads" here (and the first version I ever heard) was the lone smash for the inimitable Kirby Stone Four.

The KSF had another top 40 hit here with "KIDS".

Peggy Lee's version of Baubles did well here as did Jerry Vale's "And This is" and of course Tony Bennet's "Stranger In Paradise".

I must now sign off and attend a family BBQ which will certainly not be "Night Of My Nights"

LP Cover of the night: Roslyn Kind "Give Me You." I know nothing about this woman. Has anyone here ever heard of her? The cover just kinda drew me in. Alas she is not a very good singer.

Ben, I had once almost bought that Hansel and Gretl on VHS. One of those non-purchases that always haunted me.

Also, the claymation feature THE ADVENTURES OF MARK TWAIN is on DVD now. It's a pretty solid exploration of Twain the man and his work.

Don't think anyone will care to know that but the French version of Stranger In Paradise here, Etranger Au Paradis, was the hit of wonderful pop-singer Gloria Lasso who passed away just a few weeks ago, at eighty three. And even recently she could warble a song like most new singers can't!

http://newsfromrussia.com/culture/2005/12/06/69245.html

Sorry for that French trivia!

Hello France!

Did you hear that an American sportscaster who had signed to work for ABC-ESPN and wanted to leave to work for NBC was "traded" to NBC for the rights to Walt Disney's character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit?

Seems a thorn in the Disney family's side was that Walt didn't have the rights to this precursor to Mickey. So when Al Michaels wanted out of his contract, the deal was NBC-Universal, which owned Oswald, would give the rights to ABC-Disney.

The guy got traded for a cartoon character!

Interesting François. She also recorded it in Spanish as "Extranos en el Paraiso."

A headline today read: Jefferson's Neighbor Dies, so of course, I'm sure I wasn't the only person thinking Paul Benedict (aka "Guffman" from WAITING FOR GUFFMAN, aka the weird painter dude on SESAME STREET, etc).  But no, it was the guy who played Tom Willis, also a neighbor, I guess. But Benedict was their next-door neighbor. The Willis's lived on a different floor.

And is it really still a "blizzard" when the snow total is only in the single digits?  Or it more a matter of how fast the snow is falling and/or the wind gusts?

I think of a blizzard as something more prolonged, and more accumulation. Although a heavy snow for short duration can be a nasty thing, of course.

Well, I've put away what needed to be put away tonight.  And I've straightened up what needed to be straightened up tonight...

Alas, the more I put things away and straightened things up the more I realized just how much stuff was left here by the guy I'm subletting from.  And not just in my bedroom... The kitchen, the bathroom, the coat closet... Even my roomies commented tonight about all the "leftovers".  We're thinking of charging him a storage fee.

Ohh!!!

I had two very nice pieces of mail waiting for me when I got in tonight:

1) My membership card for Local 802.  I'm official!!!  -And apparently, I'm somehow paid up dues-wise for the first half of the year already.  One less check to write come April. :)

2) A card and fridge magnet from DR Ginny.  Thank you.  :)

Yes, that was her mother tongue!

I'd love to be traded for a Disney character!! LOL!
And a rabbit!!

I had heard about Disney getting its character back but not how!
Thanks for the info!

...And just silly-talented at such a still relatively-young age.  I believe she was just barely 21 when she placed second in the Thelonius Monk Jazz Competition a few years ago, and her debut recording is a great listen - it doesn't sound like a "first-timer".

Went to Ben Ash Deli after the show. Always a good sign when of 4,000 people leaving a show across the street, you're the only ones who choose to go to a certain restaurant. But we wanted cheesecake so we rejected our better judgment. Got the usual thing where a place is mostly empty and where do they seat us? Right by the door on a cold night. So we ask for another spot. Ok. Then the usual Ben Ash 10 minutes of nonexistant service. Then another pair of unfortunates come in, and where do they seat these people in this nigh empty place? At a table right beside us? So they ask for another spot. Ok. Cheesecake good. Overpriced, but good. And that's the story of my final visit to Ben Ash Deli.
