Well, you've read the notes, the notes were like a whirling dervish, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently at The Cowdome. The Cowdome? The Cowdome.
-
And the word of the day is: AHIMSA!
-
Well, I've FINALLY caught up with all the posts from yesterday! And now I'm going to sleep. 8)

DR elmore3003 and DR edisaurus - Thanks for the classical clips from yesterday! Very funny.
-
Well, off to get ready for the o'singing of several services, where we will no doubt be singing several ahimsas [and maybe some ahersas, too].
Smooches, kids!
-
By the way, DR JoseSPiano, is that you playing on the sound clips for All About Us on the website (http://www.allaboutusthemusical.us/music.html)?
-
I just saw that in tomorrow night's showing of Deal or No Deal, the lovely models holding the briefcases will be replaced by buff [male] firepersons. :P
-
Good morning, all! Another day in Toyland awaits me, and I look forward to it. I'm gradually getting back to my regular schedule, and that's a very good thing/
DR Cillaliz, thanks for posting the info on the documentary. Anything that shows up those asshole holocaust-denyers such as Mel Gibson's father is a wonderful thing in my book! The documentary sounds quite moving and wonderful, and I want to see it.
Tonight's the penultimate episode of SLINGS & ARROWS, I believe, and that's the focus of my evening. What will happen to KING LEAR? Can't wait!
-

DR MBarnum, set your DVR!

Morning, guys!

DR MBarnum, set your DVR!
Is MBarnum having a "Brain Tap"?

DR Cillaliz, thanks for posting the info on the documentary. Anything that shows up those asshole holocaust-denyers such as Mel Gibson's father is a wonderful thing in my book! The documentary sounds quite moving and wonderful, and I want to see it.
That does sounds very good. I have never understood why anyone would continue to deny the holocaust when there is so much photographic evidence, and nothing that you could have staged.
-
Sherlock and Cillaliz are both going to see docs.
-
Good Morning!
Hmm... This waking up before 10:00am (well, Noon... ) thing could become a habit... ;) In any case...
I'm up.
Oatmeal consumed. Coffee currently being sipped. And a cup of OJ is also on stand-by.
-
By the way, DR JoseSPiano, is that you playing on the sound clips for All About Us on the website (http://www.allaboutusthemusical.us/music.html)?
I believe the pianist in those clips is our Assistant MD/Conductor, Jim Laev. -He, along with our lead MD/Conductor, Patrick Vaccariello, have been with All About Us/Over and Over/Skin of Our Teeth since the original Signature Production.
-I'll ask Jim to confirm or deny that when I get to rehearsal today.
-
Cats fed, notes read.
-
DR Jose, the day you left, I stopped by our local roasters to get some beans to send back with you, but as is often the case, the baristas were late for work (they open at 10 on Sunday) so if I remember, I'll bring some up with me.
-
In any case, I actually need to head out on a little mission, as it were, before rehearsal today, so I shall be heading out a little earlier this morning. A friend of mine called me last night to inform me that his current - and soon(!) to be ex-roommate, has decided to stop taking his meds (I'll leave it at that for discretion's sake)... Which in turn has resulted in my friend being locked out of his apartment for the past week(!?!?!?!)... With his cellphone charger, clothes, toiletries, etc. still in the apartment. Thankfully, he does social work for a living, and works primarily out in the field and not in an office, so with the support of some co-workers and clients, he's been able to have a place to sleep, wash his clothes and eat the past week. Hopefully, this afternoon, he'll be able to retrieve his things from the apartment and at least put on some different clothes today. But just in case he can't... I have a care package to deliver. So...
Laters...

I must get that TwelveTone Collection - perfect to play at World of Wisdom.
-
Continued vibes to Sherlock. Great news that they were able to give Sherlock an earlier appointment.
-
Interesting DOC story, DR CILLA LIZ. I NEVER miss an opportunity to take photographs because (almost) every event should be recorded for its participants.
-
Oh the HIPPODROME.
I remember the Hippodrome from the movies about the show business. AND my favorite Hippodrome moment is from THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS - during the finale, all the stars come out and sing the title song about two years before it was written onstage at the Hippodrome about six years after it was torn down.
-
I have always been intrigued by A DANDY IN ASPIC, but I have never seen it.
Last night I did watch one of the DVD's sent to me by DR MBARNUM. "There's Always Tomorrow" - a Douglas Sirk film from 1955 with Miss Barbara Stanwyck and Mr Fred MacMurray as a couple having an affair. Miss Joan Bennett is the wife of Fred....their children include William Reynolds, Gigi Perreau, and the ever-annoying Judy Nugent.
I liked the film a lot....oh and Mr Race Gentry was also featured!
-
I am almost afraid to put in the DVD that DR DtM sent to me, but I must do that....soon....very soon.
-
Sunday morning greetings! I slept until 9:15 this morning which is unheard of for me. It will take much coffee to de-grogify.
-
Good morning everyone!
So many changes this week. I discharged my most difficult and stress inducing case. And one of my favorite little girls came for a day visit from the hospital, she'll be coming back for good next week. And I get to start my new schedule next week- instead of all 9-5 (which usually ends up being 9:15 to 6 or 7) I'm adding two days of 10-6 and one of 11-7. Yay extra sleep!
-
Today I must get to staples to pick up some notebooks and maybe some art supplies for work. And I also need to get my well toned behind to the gym. It's been a week since I last went.
-
Just reading DR TPUNK's schedule makes me TIRED.
Have a donut, too, DR GINNY. It couldn't hurt!
-
DR MISS KAREN should reach 1000 posts sometime today.

Good morning!
COld again this morning, but it's still very pretty outisde, and it promises to get much warmer by the afternoon. Should be a good day.
Of course, I have a bunch of inside chores that will keep me inside today.
-
I definitely want to get to the two DVR items this afternoon before moving on to a DVD.
I got a box of Criterion discs yesterday, and I'll probably watch GREEN FOR DANGER when it's time for a DVD.
-
If I did my workouts at a gym away from home, I'd probably never go, and I'd weigh 300 pounds. Luckily for me, I have the space here to have a weight machine and a treadmill so I can exercise here without having to get in the car and drive some place. With the equipment here, there's just NO excuse for me not to use it.
-
Pleased to see that there's another season of THE WILD WILD WEST coming out this week as well as the first season of MAUDE.
-
Good morning, fellow Dear Readers. It looks like this will be an all-day church day. There's a potluck dinner and a program this afternoon.
-

I totally get that- some day I'd love to have an in home gym or at least one in my luxury high rise apartment building ;). I actually started a new workout routine about 2 months ago. I only go twice a week but I do close to an hour of cardio and then another hour of stretching and weight training. A friend of mine showed me three different workouts targetting different muscle groups and I alternate. It's the first time that I've ever known what I'm doing while lifting and since I've seen such tremendous results already, it's not hard to keep motivated to go.
-
Nice to see you check in, TPunk!
-
How nice to see DR TPunk! I'll be interested to see how you like your new schedule. When my job changed about a year ago, I went to all days and find I miss the 12-9 shifts that I used to work 2 days a week. Those mornings were great for errands, breakfasts with friends, and even a little extra sleep.
No donuts in the house today. Maybe some peanut butter toast.
-
DR Cillaliz, thanks for posting the info on the documentary. Anything that shows up those asshole holocaust-denyers such as Mel Gibson's father is a wonderful thing in my book! The documentary sounds quite moving and wonderful, and I want to see it.
Thanks Dr Elmore. I read a couple places that it will open at the Lincoln Center in NYC in May of 2007, so you should have the chance to see it very soon.

And the word of the day is: AHIMSA!
I would gladly practice AHIMSA, but when someone calls people such as I A SHAM, I usually give them a bitch slapping they never forget.
-
I just saw that in tomorrow night's showing of Deal or No Deal, the lovely models holding the briefcases will be replaced by buff [male] firepersons. :P
Wearing the same skimpy frocks? :o
Or, better yet, shirtless? :D

...Tonight's the penultimate episode of SLINGS & ARROWS, I believe, and that's the focus of my evening. What will happen to KING LEAR? Can't wait!
Rain is in the forecast, and he'll forget to bring his umbrella. As usual.
-
And a lot of people like the cameraderie at a gym while working out. Even if they're not talking and into "their zone," they're still surrounded by others doing similar things which is also a motivator.
Being pretty much a loner, I quite prefer exercising in private. Stepping on a scale is the only motivation I need.
-
At some point this week, I'm going to be working on my taxes. I put it off this long this year because I kept getting updates to my forms last year all the way through March. Funny thing is this year, there haven't been ANY updates. I could have done these in February, and there wouldn't have been any changes.
-

TPunk, having your most stressful case over will be a relief. That's the time I can usually breathe again until the next one comes along. It's also the time I look around the house and say..."Good heavens! What have I been doing? This place is a mess!"
It's great you get to have a little flexibility in your schedule. What little flexibility we had when I started this job is gone now, I'm looking forward to being able to have some freedom in when I come and go.

Thanks for mentioning Staples. I really need to go there today, too. I've got to get a nice notebook to organize my TO DO list for the new office and keep track of all the expenses I've accumulated to date.

Well I'm off for a late breakfast, a trip to Staples and then back home to sort clothes and then deliver them to Good Will

DR MISS KAREN should reach 1000 posts sometime today.
That is a possibility, but I can't stay and play very long today, my second study packet is due next Monday and I've been stalling long enough, time to get to work on that paper... :'(
-
But I'll stay long enough to leave a few trivia posts -- I realize I've been using the wrong word -- they aren't shameless posts -- they are trivia posts.
-
Trivia Post: Cate Blanchett in the process of signing on for the next Indiana Jones movie...
-
Wow, a lot of posts to catch up on!
-
News trivia: Demos in Control, Bush Threatens More Vetoes....(they all need to come live here in Analview -- they're all control mongers with no since of purpose other than power...money...and more power)...

Last bit of trivia for now: Page Three Trivia Dance...

I have a cute baby story to tell. My little 18 month old niece was over. And she likes to go into the bathroom and look at herself in the mirror. I pick her up and she stands on the counter.
Anyhow yesterday she decided to step into the sink. She got her socks wet. And when i took them off she decided that she wanted a foot bath in the sink!
Well now she is completely obcessed with getting foot baths. And she is tricky too. She will pretend she wants to look in the mirror. And then sit down, rip off her socks, and put her little feet in the sink!
-
I am almost afraid to put in the DVD that DR DtM sent to me, but I must do that....soon....very soon.
I watched it myself during the week and laughed out loud every time the dinosaur and woolly mammoth appeared. I was thinking what your reaction would be.
-
Wow--everyone is heading to Staples today. I am hieing it to Office Max once again to buy my office chair, which is now $30 off.
I also have a 25% off coupon for Barnes & Noble that's burning a hole in my wallet.

Pssst--DR Jose--today is John Kander's 80th birthday!

And lovely Sonoran Desert greetings right back to the "Siren of Analview." (Hey toots, it's your location name, not mine.)
Actually the siren of analview sounds like some kind of disturbing piece of medical equipment ! :o

My back is so sore from weeding and doing yard work yesterday...I can barely move about! Am I getting old or something? I had better check and make sure that portrait is still in the attic.

The porttrait in the attic is doing fine...... and you will never grow old to some of us, dear Michael !
-
JRand, am glad you enjoyed THERE'S ALWAYS TOMORROW...wonderful movie! And William Reynolds is so good in it...actually Race Gentry is also.
Your lobby cards will hie to your home in the next mailed package...I didin't have anything large enough to put them in when I mailed this last batch.
-
I have to go do a few things for now.....hope everyone is having a lovely Sunday!
And hope DR dear Jose is doing well in chilly NYC ! You keep warm, and play nimbly !
-
My goodness I slept late. I woke about six from a very annoying dream, then fell back asleep. When I woke up at ten, the first thing I did before getting out of bed was run over the tune of the Barbara Deutsch song and I remembered it just fine - that's a good sign.
-
Will we never get to page four?
-
You'd think it was a Sunday or something. It's very overcast outside, and it looks like it is chilly, so we'll see about a jog.
-
Only MBarnum and me in the jernt. Well, Grease is on tonight, hopefully that will perk things up.
-
Will we never get to page four?
We can never go baaaaaaaaaacK. tooo paaaage fo(ah)............r.

Been trying to catch up. I've just about given up.
Today is the last day of eating cheese. Tomorrow, the DP and I begin the "Extreme Body Makeover" diet thing. I think the plan will work, and with us both doing it together, we're more likely to stick to it. They say "lose 30lbs in 6 weeks, or your money back" and I do think some progress will be seen in 6 weeks. The diet really focus' on your metabolism which I know mine is terribly asleep. I'll miss my cheese and my walks in the forest with the hills (evidently, hills screw with your heartbeat when you're excercising) We'll see what happens.
Also, tonight, before our last real dinner "out", we will be waiting patiently for HGTV to knock on our door at 6:00pm (PT) to award us the 2007 HGTV Dream House. We entered every day for over a month (as did millions of others, I know) the DP is determined to win this. Whatever, I say :)

Good Afternoon!
In the midst of choreography rehearsal again... Still teaching more "vocabulary"... So more time to read and post for me!
;)

*And the irony is that I'm meeting a friend here during my lunch break to go over some music he has to learn for an audition this week.

One person's trivia post is another's juicy morsel.
-
Pssst--DR Jose--today is John Kander's 80th birthday!
Well... We had actually planned to have a small celebration for him today here at the rehearsal hall, but, alas, he's off attending to other matters today. So... Tuesday it shall be.

Grease is on tonight and "America" will have to decide. Is "America" up to this great responsibility?
-
Does it include black mens boxer shorts?
No. But it does include a MetroCard, a Whole Foods Gift Card, and a $20 bill. -His "mad cash", and part of the contents of his wallet are also locked in the apartment. Still. :-\ *He had just run out for coffee one morning last week, and when he came back 15 minutes later, he found out he was locked out.
-
Grease is on tonight and "America" will have to decide. Is "America" up to this great responsibility?
Does America care?
*Although, I would like to hear some actual numbers at some point. It would "interesting" to see - if like "American Idol" - more people end up voting for Danny and Sandy than the U.S. President.
-
My back is so sore from weeding and doing yard work yesterday...I can barely move about! Am I getting old or something? I had better check and make sure that portrait is still in the attic.

Grease is on tonight and "America" will have to decide. Is "America" up to this great responsibility?
And interestingly enough, Nick Dalton (who made it to "Grease Academy", but not the final 12) is working the reception desk here today. We've been talking... It's been quite an interesting conversation to say the least.

Several weeks ago, I reported in this forum that I had spent a pleasant couple of hours watching, on my then-new plasma HDTV, "South Pacific" and was totally blown away by the restoration, the colors, the sound, everything.
What I later realized, much to my chagrin, was that what I had watched was the familiar "theatrical cut" of the film...the one most everyone has seen over the past 49 years.
Last night (starting in late afternoon, actually) I popped in the "restored roadshow version" and spent the next 5 hours wallowing in stunned joy (and, at the end, outrage when I listened to the worst commentary tracks imaginable).
At any rate, if anyone is interested, here are my observations about:

I have to say, that's certainly quite the lively "discussion".
-
That does sounds very good. I have never understood why anyone would continue to deny the holocaust when there is so much photographic evidence, and nothing that you could have staged.
Hey - the Flat-Earthers believe all the NASA stuff was staged. Arthur Clarke wrote the script for the Apollo Program.
I'm sure there is suspicion the Michael Moore wrote the script for the Holocaust myths.
As long as you are willing to believe that all the powers-that-be can fabricate whatever they please and that all science is manufactured hokum, then denial of anything is possible.

I understand a documentarian heard about some dog lovers at Howard University and went there to shoot some footage.
He has asked Edisaurus to edit the material into 10 minute segments which he shall run as "Black Men's Boxer Shorts" and "Back Girl's Poodle Cuts".

DR TPUNK,
Your workout sounds wonderful! Like DR MATTH, I've been working out at home for the last several years, although not so faithfully this past year. It's a big help time-wise; in the amount of time it would take me to drive to the gym and back I can do a work-out. You don't get the commaraderie, of course. But it is convenient.

Page four? Is this a slow news day here at haineshisway.com? This is most unseemly. I'd say we'd better get some frenzies goin' on.

I finished the chapter I was on, then finished watching a motion picture on DVD, then smoothed a few things out is said chapter, and am now printing out the pages, which I'll then get Xeroxed and delivered to muse Margaret.

DER BRUCER,
I loved your joke yesterday about "the Czech is in the male." I have a t-shirt that says "Czech It Out," but had never heard the "Czech is in the male" joke.
-
Will we never get to page four?
Sure.
-
Hello, BK.
-
I also loved DR BEN's remarks yesterday about baseball. Sort of summed up my feelings about the game--most sports, actually.
-
Will we never get to page five?
Certainly.
-
I watched two movies this afternoon.
I began with THE PERILS OF PAULINE which I haven't seen in a long, long time. The film wasn't any better than I remembered it, some of it good but much of it terribly cliched.
The print TCM aired was very deeply saturated, but it had loads of artifacts throughout, so if Universal were to release this Paramount feature to recover it from public domain hell, they'd have to do a lot of clean-up to make it presentable, and I doubt they'll go to the trouble.
-
Next, I put in THE LITTLE FOXES. I was going to watch one of the Criterion discs I got yesterday, but during THE PERILS OF PAULINE, I started thinking about this movie and not having seen it in several years, pulled it off the shelf and watched it again. Very, very enjoyable, and the old DVD transfer I have looked excellent apart from a few stray scratches.
-
I still have SUPERNATURAL to watch today, and may watch another Lucy-Desi hour since time will probably be too limited to squeeze in NIGHT AND THE CITY (Dassin's version) before GREASE comes on at 8.
-
BK, I am most impressed with the progress you're making on your new book.
-
Oh, I liked NIGHT AND THE CITY.

Well... Since we really can't/shouldn't play the sound clips that loud here in the rehearsal room... The consensus is is that it is neither Jim nor I playing on those sound clips. We both seem to think that those clips are from the original demos - pre-Signature Theatre production. But... ???

OH! We're finishing earlier than scheduled today! HOO and RAY! -It really has been a long week for everyone. The phrase "head is going to explode" has been used many times today. So...

It's time for me to get ready to work the concessions counter for a performance by the Olympia Symphony Orchestra playing German music...Beethoven, Wagner and Brahms. I must shower, then dress, then eat, then do a few errands, then go downtown to do concessions. I'll record everything that I want to watch on TV tonight. The symphony starts at 7:00 p.m., but I don't have to stay after the intermission, so it shouldn't be too bad. ::)

And I finally bought my office chair at Office Max this afternoon. Brown leather, terrific back support and nicely contours to my tush. Small problem where I couldn't fit the box in my car, but I simply took it out of the box and loaded it in (the store had no problem with me leaving the box in the vestibule.) The chair was a snap to put together and I'm sitting on it as I type.

Howard Keel did play Emile in a 70's touring of the show opposite Jane Powell! I got to see them in Montréal and they were wonderful! Ah, nostalgia!
And I saw the same in LA (1977), directed by Donald Driver.
Keel and Powell returned to LA in 1980 to do "I Do, I Do".

Hi dear Esteemed, well-slept, and tuneful BK --
Good vibes on your performance this evening. When you have a second, could you please give a little "credential and bio" rundown on Barbara Deutsch? I googled that name, but there are lots of different ones in various fields.
Thanks, oh brain who is so brainy !!

I guess all the Wussburgers are still passed out (or nursing hangovers) -- pretty quiet around here this morning...
HA! I stripped the wall paper off one wall in the bathroom, scrubbed the bathroom and kitchen floors on my hands and knees (as my mother says "It's the only way to really get them clean") ran the vacuum throughout the rest of the house, went to the grocery store, peeled apples and made an apple crisp that is now baking in the oven, threw out a bunch of garbage and.... oh yeah, right after I signed off earlier I made a homemade corned beef hash for lunch...passed out....yeah right ;)

British Airways Places Dead Passenger in First Class Seat
Sunday , March 18, 2007
A British Airways passenger travelling first class has described how he woke up on a long-haul flight to find that cabin crew had placed a corpse in his row.
The body of a woman in her seventies, who died after the plane left Delhi for Heathrow, was carried by cabin staff from economy to first class, where there was more space. Her body was propped up in a seat, using pillows.

Good Evening!
Well, the A Train is running "local" this weekend due to track work (there are no C Trains this weekend which normally run "local"). So, after quite a long wait at 23rd Street for a train uptown, an A Train pulled up, quite packed with people, and I packed myself in with them. 34th... 42nd... 50th... 59th...
"Due to the fact this train is running late, this A Train will be making express stops past 59th Street/Columbus Circle. The next stop will be 125th Street, followed by 145th Street. If you require local service, please wait for the next A Train."
-At that point I cheered. Silently. But I cheered. ;) -And I was home just three stops later.

...And now that I'm home, and that my work week has ended, all I really want to do is go to sleep... But, there's "Grease:YTOTIW" to watch tonight, and we have some friends coming over for pizza and "TAR". So...
I also want a beer. Or two. So... But since I'm working tomorrow (not on All About Us)... -Oh, and I also just picked up a nice one-day gig playing for a reading of Tom Jones! -When it rains, it pours.

The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe (http://www.emuszine.com/eggs/maureen_williams_old_women_in_shoe.htm)
From Australian artist Maureen Williams comes this salute to one of the most popular Mother Goose Rhymes ever written, The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe.
"There was an old woman who lived in a shoe, she had so many children she didn't know what to do"
This wonderful creation features not one, not two but three different eggs! The artist has used an emu egg for the toe and foot part of the boot and an ostrich egg for the heel. The ostrich egg has two floors, all areas are lit with 9 volt lights (with plug-in adaptor). The front of the boot opens to reveal the nursery with a quail egg cradle. The pitched roof features wooden shingles. The detailing is fantastic. It even has eyelets for the laces! Note the flower beds with the kitten playing in the front yard. The boot has a bit of a heel, so the artist has even provided our little old lady with steps leading to the front door - note the pots at the foot of the stairs.

LA OBSERVED (http://www.laobserved.com/archive/2007/03/free_to_skewer_oreilly.php)
In a blog post today, Winchell recounts her and Germain telling a story last night of boorish and elitist behavior by O'Reilly on a trip to Los Angeles.
:
Apparently, he was not pleased with the efforts staffers had made for him. In particular, he was extremely unhappy with the croissants that were laid out for him.
Not because he is against the French and everything they have to offer. No, that would almost show some character on his part. I mean, it would be obnoxious, but consistent with his professed beliefs, so you'd have to give him points for walking the walk.
No this was a bigger problem. Much bigger.
The croissants were not fresh enough.
Apparently, there is no room for store bought baked goods in the No Spin Zone. They must be from a bakery. And they must be baked fresh, very fresh. Which is why he insisted that a baker in Beverly Hills be summoned to create a fresh batch, just for him. Post haste.
Because Bill is just folks, you know. A regular guy.
He followed that up by demanding that a helicopter take him to Orange County for his next appearance, because he didn't want to spend an hour in the limousine the station had arranged for him. That was too much to ask.

Well... I don't think any of the acting portions of their "audition" will ever be aired. However, there is a chance - and a slim one at that - some acting may be featured when it comes down to the final two Danny's and Sandy's. In other words, next week.

But if they don't show us the dannys and sandys in different pairings how will we know who has chemistry?
And if we don't get to see them act, how will we know who CAN ACT.
I mean they make it seem like they are serious about casting the show. And then they do not give us the information needed to make a decision.
So basically we are just suppoed to take Kathleen's word on who can act and who can't??????????????????

...And if they do show any acting, the scenes would probably not run more than 60 seconds. -Remember when "Star Search" used to have an acting category? That was sort of excruciating: watching the same cheesy dialog being repeated by two pairs of not-so-good actors.
In a real audition - Broadway or otherwise - they would have to read a couple of "sides" and in various pairings.

Eustace Lycett, 91, Designer of Special Effects for Disney Movies, Dies
By DENNIS HEVESI
Published: March 17, 2007
Eustace Lycett, whose work helping to create special effects for major Disney productions — including characters in “Mary Poppins” who walk on smoke, and seemingly empty suits of medieval armor engaged in combat in “Bedknobs and Broomsticks” — earned him a share in two Academy Awards, died on Nov. 16 at his home in Fullerton, Calif. He was 91.
Walt Disney Company, via Associated Press
Eustace Lycett
A spokesman for Walt Disney Studios, Howard Green, said yesterday that company officials had not been notified of his death until this week.
During a 43-year career with Disney, starting in 1937, Mr. Lycett worked on more than 30 films, including “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “Babes in Toyland,” “The Absent-Minded Professor,” “101 Dalmatians” and “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.”
In 1964, along with Peter Ellenshaw and Hamilton Luske, he won an Oscar for special visual effects for “Mary Poppins.” And in 1971, with Alan Maley and Danny Lee, he won another Oscar in the same category for “Bedknobs and Broomsticks.”
Mr. Lycett was a protégé of Ub Iwerks, a pioneer of animation and special effects who for many years was head of the Disney studio’s process laboratory. They and other technicians worked together in the late 1930s to design a complex version of what was called the multiplane camera, a device that revolutionized animation by bringing depth to what had been a rather flat image. Mr. Iwerks, who died in 1971, had designed a simpler multiplane camera.
In a telephone interview yesterday, Mr. Iwerks’s son, Don Iwerks, a former chief of the Disney machine shop, explained that the camera separated a cartoon’s celluloid image into three planes: its background, an intermediate scene and the characters. “The fact that the planes could be moved independent of each other,” Mr. Iwerks said, “made it dimensional, in that objects in the foreground could move faster than the intermediate plane and then the background.”
The more sophisticated multiplane camera led to the production in 1937 of “Snow White,” the first full-length animated feature. Profits from “Snow White” allowed Walt Disney to build the company’s large studio complex in Burbank, Calif.
Eustace Arden Lycett was born in Straffordshire, England, on Dec. 21, 1914, the son of Martha Constance Walley and William Arden Lycett. As a mining engineer, Mr. Lycett’s father regularly moved with the family; they lived in Chile for years, and went to California in the early 1930s.
In 1937 Mr. Lycett earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at the California Institute of Technology. That year, he also married Mary Ethel Goddard, who died in 2004. Mr. Lycett is survived by four sons: Kenneth, of Fullerton; William, of Placentia, Calif.; Roy, of Corona, Calif.; and Victor of Anaheim, Calif.; a sister, Nora Robertson of Carlsbad, N.M.; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
It did not take Mr. Lycett long to find work. He graduated on a Friday and, based on an interview two weeks earlier, started work at Disney the following Monday. Mr. Lycett was named head of Disney’s special photographic effects department in 1958.
His career there was not limited to the big screen. He helped design “Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln,” one of the most popular exhibits at the 1964-65 World’s Fair in New York, and “Rocket to the Moon,” a major attraction at Disneyland.

Ok, one of the Dannys just got the sympathy vote (not that he necessarily needed it). If he wins, he'll be a role model for so many that conquered adversity.
-
GREASE SPOILER
Max revealed that he had Bell's Palsy as a child. They even showed pictures of him when his face was half-paralyzed. I guess emotionally that beats Austin's being a fat teenager and worrying about being almost over the hill with clock ticking on his career.

Miss Karen, FJL & Singdaw. Sherlock says thank you.
Today we gave him a bath & trimmed his nails. We have no idea when he will be up to either again. Then we took a nice walk in town, stopping often to let him rest. We sat outside in the beautiful sunshine and had an early dinner, late lunch at one of the restaurants. Another activity that isn’t likely to happen for a long time.

They just said Stay Tuned for more Grease!

Does that mean party at Austin's house? (Just kidding.)
-
Were ALL of bk's books originally distributed with CDs? Will they eventually be available again?
All the books had CDs except for Rewind - but there's a song that features prominently in Rewind that's on Guy Haines' New Guy In Town CD.
I still have a few Bus and Truck CDs (the musical they're doing in the book), and, as I said, I'm doing a one CD version of the three Kritzer books that I'll have in about a month.
-
Will we never get to page nine?
-
And now to "The Amazing Race" - delayed by 45 minutes... *I'll watch the last ten minutes (via DVR) after "TAR".
-
I suppose I shall now be on my way to the birthday bash - I have no idea how long it will be - there's dinner, and there's "entertainment" - so, I guess it could be a long evening - but, maybe not.
-
They're mix and matching the last remaining Dannys and Sandys so we (I mean, America) can see the chemistry of the various pairs.
-
SPOILER
Austin had a little Cher thing going with his enunciation during the beginning of "I've Had the Time of My Life." But Max is having vocal rpoblems tonight.
-
So are ya'll laughing because the singing is bad?
It is only 6 p.m. here -- I don't know if it has started yet or not.

Wow, the GREASE judges were unanimous on their picks!

Went shopping today. Came home with a lot of cabbage, salad mix, chicken breast and ground turkey. Proceeded to bake the chicken breasts with some Mrs. Dash and create a no sodium no fat turkey sausage with the ground turkey. Much imagination required. A little spray butter will go a long way with this diet. We start tomorrow. Tonight - a steak dinner :P

Page nine dance. I vote for the Shipoopi

And it's nine o'clock

Der Brucer was watching Sleaze - We're The One's You Spend Good Money On Phone Calls For, I just listened.
What the heck was that with the two guys saying why they thought they should win? They both turned the show into Queen For a Day!
-
And tonight's "losing" GREASE male seems to have been promised a more assured future career than the other two - for now, anyway

And tonight's "losing" GREASE male seems to have been promised a more assured future career than the other two - for now, anyway
Oh, the tales I could tell... And will... Tomorrow. ;)

And tonight's "losing" GREASE male seems to have been promised a more assured future career than the other two - for now, anyway
And since it was/is an "audition", any of the losers could be called in to read and sing for other roles in the show. And probably will be.

Ooof.
Read the ingredients on the Mrs. Dash - you might be able to save money creating your own.
Tonight - a steak dinner :P
Well, here I'm with you. We're also doing steak, along with mac and cheese, and Stouffer's spinach souflee.
-
\
Thank -you for the set-up.
der Brucer
Admittedly, I enjoy providing set-ups for jokes, but that one was unintended and unforeseen.
-
All this MattH inspired Susie Homemaker frenzy even inspired me to do two loads of laundry and one of dishes - that's it for 2007!
der Brucer
Gosh, I must have logged off just before it started. The homemaker frenzy didn't reach me at all! :)

Well, with the price of produce creeping up due to the harsh winter, a bottle of dehydrated veggies may end up being cheaper at this point. Besides, it saves on chopping and mincing time. ;)

DR Matthew - What is this "Extreme Body Makeover" diet? Did I miss it on "Oprah"? ;)
-
HA! I stripped the wall paper off one wall in the bathroom, scrubbed the bathroom and kitchen floors on my hands and knees (as my mother says "It's the only way to really get them clean") ran the vacuum throughout the rest of the house, went to the grocery store, peeled apples and made an apple crisp that is now baking in the oven, threw out a bunch of garbage and.... oh yeah, right after I signed off earlier I made a homemade corned beef hash for lunch...passed out....yeah right ;)
I am forever amazed at CILLALIZ'S motivation and stamina!
-
DR Matthew - What is this "Extreme Body Makeover" diet? Did I miss it on "Oprah"? ;)
Ah, I just Googled it... I've seen the informercial. -And I have to say, it sounds like one of the more sensible plans out there.
Eat well and often.
-
My eyes must be going. I read that as Eat well and austin.

Just saw a promo for what has potential to be a cute show called "Thank God You're Here" where a celebrity walks in to a scene - but doesn't know anything about it before he or she is there and has to improv. At least that's the gist of what I got from the promo. I believe this was a series somewhere else...Australia maybe...Tomovoz?
Very successful show here - with the critics and the punters.
I did not watch it. The team behind the show has an excellent track record with Tv and film. I think "Front Line" may have made it to cable in the USA. Their biggest success here was the film "The Castle". I prefer their second feature "The Dish"
-
DS Rob and I made an excursion to Kenwood Towne Centre in Cincinnati today to trade in my blue iPod mini on a racy new red 8gig iPod Nano. It's syncing with my iTunes as I type.
Midlife crisis, my dear? :)

Midlife crisis, my dear? :)
To quote Grease: "There are worse things I could do..." ;)

Once again for the many DRs who email (OK it's just François), I'm hoping my email problems will be sorted out today.
Again many thanks to DR DtM for shedding some light on our piazza.
-
I've already told Tivo to record up to one and a half hour extra, just in case.
That Trojans over Texas win really screwed up my brackets. Grrrr...
Trojans Over Texas - that's the title of the next cheap tape in DR Elmore's VCR!!!
;D

When men take that attitude toward bride selection, everybody gets all huffy!
der Brucer
Aren't you a few years behind, DER BRUCER?

Well, with the price of produce creeping up due to the harsh winter, a bottle of dehydrated veggies may end up being cheaper at this point. Besides, it saves on chopping and mincing time. ;)
I'm not that good at "mincing." ::)

Time to get dinner on the table.

I'm not that good at "mincing." ::)
Well, goodness knows there are several folks here who can direct you toward a master class should you ever want one.

Since TAR wasn't delayed here i watched GREASE at 9pm.
Here's what i thought.
SPOILERS.
*
*
*
We definitely have a danny and sandy. Max and laura.
They were both my favorites before tonight. But i was not sure how they would work together.
First off, i think america made the right choice eliminating allie and derek. I think they were the weakest, IMO. Especially allie.
I actually really liked the show this week. I thought that the side by side duets (ashley singing and then laura singing parts from the same song AND then austin and max doing the same) was a really good choice. It let you compare.
And i liked seeing the male/female combinations.
After seeing the show I was convinced that laura and max are the best combination.
Kathleen marshall actually said something smart. She said to look at who you believe when you watch them. The choice for the women seems completely clear cut. And i actually liked ashley a lot when she first auditioned. But when i watch her i feel nothing. Except that she is mugging for the camera. I really don't feel any emotion. And i like watching her less and less each week. In fact the only thing i liked of her tonight was watching her sister's taped bit.
As for laura, she mesmerizes me. And what she said was true. She has improved and grown so much during this competition.
As for austin, he is fine. I like him alright and think he the most well rounded probably out of everybody. But he seems slightly fake to me. And while i would be okay if he won. I really do prefer max.
And then there is max. I love him. He has grown so much as well. I love watching him. He feels everything he does.
But what clinched it was the second i saw laura and max sing together. It was really something. I really think they would be good together.
So imagine my surprise when all 3 judges said laura and max were the best. I thought the votes would be split, especially since ashley looks the part. And since austin has so much experience. But it was unanimous.
I was happy they let the judges speak. Because to me that is the most interesting part. I thought they were all pretty nice about how they felt. But i also think america is very swayed by what the judges say. So i do think max and laura will win.
Although it was interesting that they said there was only 1% difference between max and austin. I'm assuming that means that laura beat ashley by much more.
-
Let's see, best singer -- Austin; best dancer - Austin, best actor - Austin; best-looking - Austin.
Choice for Danny -- Max?
Blech!
-
Although it was interesting that they said there was only 1% difference between max and austin. I'm assuming that means that laura beat ashley by much more.
Well, I'm guessing that 1% of the vote probably on "Grease..." is probably equal to 0.0001% of the vote on "American Idol".
-
And I just finished watching the last ten minutes of "Grease..." courtesy of the DVR...
And now I want some crackers. To go with all that cheese. ;D
But seriously... -Well, as serious as one can be about this whole enterprise...
I wonder if the last duet was chosen for the contestants since the casting for the Toronto company of "Dirty Dancing" is currently underway. ;)
-
Singer Carol Richards has died (if someone else reported this here, I apologize for not seeing it).
LA Times obit:
RICHARDS, Carol (Swiedler)
Carol Richards (Swiedler), singer, radio and television performer, well-remembered for her duet with Bing Crosby on the hit single "Silver Bells", died Friday in Vero Beach, Florida. She was 84.
"Born on June 6, 1922, Richards won a Bob Hope talent contest in her early 20s, moved to Hollywood and made numerous TV appearances including 'I Love Lucy', 'Name That Tune', 'The Saturday Night Review', and variety shows hosted by Ralph Edwards, Dennis Day, Pinky Lee, Edgar Bergen, and Ezio Pinza. For four years (1953-1957), she was a regular cast member on 'The Bob Crosby Show.' She was the movie singing voice for Vera Ellen in 'Call Me Madam,' for Cyd Charisse in 'Silk Stockings,' 'Brigadoon,' 'Deep in my Heart,' and 'It's Always Fair Weather,' and for Betta St. John in 'The Robe.' She worked frequently with Danny Kaye, Jerry Lewis, and Bob Hope, and sang with the Russ Morgan and Desi Arnaz Bands.
"In the 1960s, after moving to Chicago to raise a growing family, Richards performed at numerous club dates, and appeared frequently on Don McNeil's famous radio show, The Breakfast Club.
"She was the loving mother of 15 children, 19 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Edward Swiedler."

My first shot at an avatar. I'll try to get it a little less blurry once I figure these things out.

Cute, even if a bit blurred.
-
DerBrucer, are you in the mood to do some research?
Craig says Polish Air has the best prices, at the moment, for flights from Bucharest to the States. I’m wondering where to go to find out the safety record in the pet section of their planes?

A photo of my hard work yesterday....the front yard...
Well, that photo is too dark to see the gardening that was done. But you can see how tiny my home environment is!
I don't know Mike, I think it looks perfect for the two of us!

Once again for the many DRs who email (OK it's just François), I'm hoping my email problems will be sorted out today.
Again many thanks to DR DtM for shedding some light on our piazza.
I'm out of vibes right now, so I'm sure you won't mind if you get marimbas from me re: email problems! ;)

For the first time in my life, I've voted (online) in a reality show. There's only one Grease pairing for which I'd even consider buying a ticket.
-
Avatar still blurred, but we'll get the hang of it. :)

Singer Carol Richards has sided
With whom?!
I was very fond of her voice!

Avatar still blurred, but we'll get the hang of it. :)
Ha! They look like "boys" now! Blurred, they look like "girls"! ??? ;)

Will we never get to page 2015?!

Dogs look almost twice as well, when they're slightly blurry (almost a Jerry Herman reference)
-
Here, they should turn the Presidential Elections into a Reality TV show!
That way they'll get more people to VOTE! Even if they have to PAY! 0.34 euros per call!
Oy, vey!

Hmmm... you're rerunning your own puns, FJL! Some of us remember, you know! ;)
-
Will we never get to page 2015?!
I sincerely hope not. I could never catch up!
-
Let'a hope that America corrects the judges error!
Ooooh, but we all have faith in America (the beautiful!) don't we?!
-
Laura - Toby & Dylan say thank you.
-
Laura - Toby & Dylan say thank you.
Just like in a Disney animated film, the "boys" can talk?!?
I guess they're quoting George Mc Cohan! ;)
-
Francois - I don't think that's a pun, just a bastardization of a Jerry Herman lyric, for which repetition is allowed. :) If i wanted to make a pun, I'd have said: Dogs look almost twice as well, when they're slightly furry. But I'd never stoop so low.
-
Toby not only talks, he sings. Or at least warbles.

I see; he's not a dog anymore!

Can Toby play piano?
"And now Toby at the piano!"
-
Maybe Dylan can play the harmonica?!

Dylan unfortunately has no musical talent. But he's also a much happier dog for not being tortured by musical talent.
:)

I can hear Mr Newley sing "It's A Musical World!"

Dr FJL...I love the picture of Toby and Dyland and absolutely cannot wait to meet them!
My DH and I were talking a leisurely walk through an abandoned office park and saw a big, black, beautiful dog. I thought it was a bouvier de flanders but his owner said he was a giant schnauzer. I'd never heard of such a thing! But he was wonderful, very friendly.

Dr FJL...I love the picture of Toby and Dyland and absolutely cannot wait to meet them!
Toby at Disneyland? (or 10 Days At The Circus?)
They're dying to meAt you! ;)

Looking forward to the cd for the Kritzer trilogy
-
Let'a hope that America corrects the judges error!
It seemed to me that they were trying to encourage that...
-
I thought it was a bouvier de flanders
Oh, but Jackie was NOT from that region at all!
-
Looking forward to the cd for the Kritzer trilogy
So am I, DR Cillaliz. I'm planning to reread the books when it's available.
-
Edi - Toby's warbling "Once in Love with Amy" in preparation for your visit. :) Dylan is listening attentively, but perked up when he heard you know Alton Brown.
-
Well, with the price of produce creeping up due to the harsh winter, a bottle of dehydrated veggies may end up being cheaper at this point. Besides, it saves on chopping and mincing time. ;)
I've been considering planting a vegetable garden this year. Just trying to figure out the best place to do it. If I don't do a real garden I may at least do some patio tomatoes.
-
Will we never get to page seven?
Certainly it will happen.
-
I am forever amazed at CILLALIZ'S motivation and stamina!
LOL, I don't tell you about all the days I don't do a thing, thus the place gets to be a mess and I have no choice but to work like crazy once I get started. Actually the master plan is now to get everything done around here in the next month or two then set up a schedule like DR Matt. I think I could keep the place clean that way without having to hire someone to clean. I've always figured if I have to pick up, I may as well clean. And I didn't get around to sorting clothes
-
Enjoyed the pictures of your house, yard, and animals, DR MBarnum. Thanks so much for sharing them with us.
-
Love the pic of Toby and Dylan

Will we never get to page nine?
Yes.
-
Will we never get to page nine?
Didn't you ask that already. Anyway, the answer is yes. :)
-
Today was a lovely day, full of absolutely no excitement whatsoever.
-
For the first time in my life, I've voted (online) in a reality show. There's only one Grease pairing for which I'd even consider buying a ticket.
Which is?
-
Well, goodness knows there are several folks here who can direct you toward a master class should you ever want one.
Well, that goes without saying.
-
Cilla - Thanks. They said to say hi and that they enjoyed seeing you again, and hope you'll drop food - oops, they mean, drop BY - next time you're in town.
-
I began my evening watching another Lucy-Desi show - the race horse episode with Betty Grable and Harry James. I was expecting Betty to look very out of shape and overweight, especially judging from her appearance in HOW TO BE VERY, VERY POPULAR, her last Fox film. At any rate, she looked very good. It wasn't a very funny episode, but I enjoyed William Frawley a lot in this episode.
-
Cilla - Thanks. They said to say hi and that they enjoyed seeing you again, and hope you'll drop food - oops, they mean, drop BY - next time you're in town.
Tell them I'll do both but will be sure it isn't the wasabi covered nuts, which were good, btw, is there somewhere I can order those?
-
The Lucy-Desi talk reminds me of my friend Keith saying repeatedly in high school: Who was Fred Mertz to call Ethel fat? Ethel Mertz was not fat.
-
Here's Squeak. He's one of the cats I visited at my friend's house Friday
-
Next, I watched SUPERNATURAL, a change of pace episode with one very great surprise.
In all honesty, it shouldn't have been such a surprise since the writers borrowed liberally from THE TWILIGHT ZONE episode "The Hitch-hiker," but it was still a very touching episode for a change instead of just ghouls and evil spirits.
-
This is a better photo of him, he is SOOO friendly
-
Squeak is very handsome.
-
This is his brother, Hafer
-
To take me up to the GREASE show, I continued rewatching ELIZABETH I - part I, the segments dealing with the end of her love affair with the DUke and her involvement in the Mary Queen of Scots business. I forgot that they had Elizabeth and Mary meeting in this version though there is no real record they ever did.
-
Looks like he lost a bit of his ear courting the ladies.
-
Cilla - We just got them in the market downstairs. But it's from the Peanut Shop of Williamsburg. The container mentions a website www.thepeanutshop.com
-
Let's see, best singer -- Austin; best dancer - Austin, best actor - Austin; best-looking - Austin.
Choice for Danny -- Max?
Blech!
Well... I actually think that Max is the better actor. Austin just always seems "on" to me. Which gets weary after a while. But, frankly, none of the finalists were my ideal Danny or Sandy. It all sort of came down to who decided to show up at the open casting calls last year. More power to Austin, Max, etc. for heading out in the cold that day. But there are many more worthy candidates, "finalists" for the roles out there. I guess it's their loss - and "America's" - for not lining up that day. In any case...
Just remember, the show is Grease... Well, as Jim Jacobson informed us tonight, a new "evolved" Grease. Whatever ends up on Broadway this summer will in no way resemble the original Broadway production. That's the real shame of this whole competition/reality show.
-
Hafer is handsome as well. I love the markings on his face.
-
Squeak showed up on my friend Gretchen's doorstep one Christmas Eve. It was very cold out and he was just a kitten. He had some frostbite, and that's what made his ear look funny
-
Cilla - We just got them in the market downstairs. But it's from the Peanut Shop of Williamsburg. The container mentions a website www.thepeanutshop.com
Thanks, I'll check it out
-
What a nice Christmas gift he turned out to be.
-
DR Laura, Squeak got his name because that's the sound he made when he was little. Just a little "eek" now and then. He doesn't talk much more than that now.
-
Well, the producers of the television show and the judges basically handed Danny over to Max tonight, airing that featurette filled with bathos about his Bell's Palsy while he broke up pitiably on camera. Then, the three judges anointing him as their choice despite his very less than adequate solo singing.
I guess chemistry is in the eye of the beholder because I didn't see it with Max and either Laura or Ashley. I actually thought Austin and Ashley were the best couple of the night.
I have been a Laura fan from the get-go, but I felt nerves got the better of her tonight until her pairing with Austin. With him, her voice soared, so I was very surprised that they thought Laura and Max had the most chemistry. I actually thought Max was better with Ashley, too.
Had to be demoralizing for Austin who sang rings around Max (who has almost no sustain and talk-sings the lyrics too much), and who for me is just a sexier guy hands down.
How on earth are they going to fill an hour show next week with no competition on the agenda?
-
OH these look interesting Wasabi and Honey
-
Just remember, the show is Grease... Well, as Jim Jacobson informed us tonight, a new "evolved" Grease. Whatever ends up on Broadway this summer will in no way resemble the original Broadway production. That's the real shame of this whole competition/reality show.
This is very true, but then, the revival of SWEENEY TODD we got last season wasn't like the original Broadway show either.
And while I didn't see the last revival of GREASE (the one with Ricky Paull Goldin), was it much like the original? I think we can blame the movie for this evolution.
-
Cilla - We just got them in the market downstairs. But it's from the Peanut Shop of Williamsburg. The container mentions a website www.thepeanutshop.com
Dean & DeLuca as well as Williams-Sonoma carries their own house brand of wasabi peanuts too. *And, actually, I think they all come from the same processing plant that the Williamsburg ones do.
You may also want to check out the Virginia Diner (http://www.vadiner.com). Those Sussex County peanuts sure are delicious! *And the Virginia Diner makes a great pit stop on the trip down to Norfolk from Richmond if you choose to take the scenic route down Route 460.
I've also come across cans of "Hot & Sweet" peanuts - half wasabi peanuts, half honey roasted. Quite an interesting combination - sorta works for me, sorta doesn't. But, man, those wasabi peanuts can sure clear your sinuses if you don't take enough time between handfuls. All that wasabi just starts to build up after a while! Whew!
-
...
How on earth are they going to fill an hour show next week with no competition on the agenda?
More featurettes :P ?
-
Yes, basketball overrun casued the delay of the new CBS shows, so at 9, I watched the next-to-last ROME. Oh, my! Pullo learning the truth about the death of his wife and child, Antony manipulated by CLeopatra into making a bone-headed decision that will cost him dearly. I'm going to miss this show.
-
OH these look interesting Wasabi and Honey
THOSE are the ones I was thinking about!
-Oohh... that's kind of spooky.
;)
-
More featurettes :P ?
Ugh! I have watched every episode of this show. I may actually record it and just speed to the end to the announcements next week.
-
DR Jose - did you mention something the other evening about a relative having a Filipino restaurant in Arlington, VA? DH Richard and I will be staying in the Crystal City area in June and I wondered if we'd be near it?
-
So, I sped past THE AMAZING RACE on the DVR and watched COLD CASE, a sad story of a mother and two daughters forced to live in their car for an extended period. Nice little mystery. I didn't guess the identity of the murderer.
-

I didn't eat a lot of them at Fred and Skip's place, but I did enjoy them and thought they would be fun for parties. I haven't seen them around here, but there may be somewhere with it. I'll check out the Virginia Diner site
-
I liked TAR tonight. It was another case of you must pick the right task. I think it's more interesting with a more even field of competitors. You really don't know who is going to win now
-
This one from the Virginia Diner is cheaper it has wasabi, sweet and tangy and chili
-
We don't serve the cheap stuff when you come over, Cilla. We're not chicy bassas. :)
-
Spoo, I meant chincy bassas.
-
This is very true, but then, the revival of SWEENEY TODD we got last season wasn't like the original Broadway show either.
And while I didn't see the last revival of GREASE (the one with Ricky Paull Goldin), was it much like the original? I think we can blame the movie for this evolution.
Well, last year's revival of Sweeney Todd was a total reinvention of the piece. Some people liked it. Some people loathed. -I liked it.
As for the last revival of Grease... The production was sooooo geared toward Rizzo - and the stunt-casting of said role, starting off with Rosie O'Donnell - that it seemed like Danny and Sandy were afterthoughts. That is until those roles started to be stunt cast too. And that revival actually wanted to be more like the movie, since there was a movie-based production of Grease running in London at the time, and they wanted to bring it over. But due to difficulties in securing the rights for the movie songs for a Broadway production, the producers had to go back to the original...with a few interpolations - most notably "Since I Fell For You" for Sandy. (That called belted high E's, F's and G's!!!!!)
As for the "new" Grease... Yes, the movie is to blame. But I also treat the movie as a different animal. More or less.
I just have to wonder about Jim Jacobson's role in all of this - and his credibility. The movie is most definitely not "his" Grease - that was Allan Carr and Bronte Woodard who's credited with the screenplay. Jim Jacobson seems to have "claimed" the movie as his own. And it just simply wasn't.
-
His name is Jim Jacobs, isn't it?
-
DR Jose - did you mention something the other evening about a relative having a Filipino restaurant in Arlington, VA? DH Richard and I will be staying in the Crystal City area in June and I wondered if we'd be near it?
My godmother/aunt has a Filipino restaurant called Little Quiapo. It's in the Arlington Forest part of Arlington, right off of Route 50. However, it's not exactly near Crystal City nor Metro stop.
However, let me gather up my list of restaurant recommendations for Crystal City... -If you want some wonderful Afghan kebabs, there are two competing restaurants right on 23rd Street (off of Jefferson Davis Highway). And one of them is open 24 hours. *Just make sure you don't confuse them with the "Gentlemen's Club" next door. ;)
-
But Jose, isn't what you're saying like saying the film of CABARET is no longer Joe Masteroff's CABARET or that the film of WEST SIDE STORY is no longer Arthur Laurent's WEST SIDE STORY or the HELLO DOLLY film is no longer Michael Stewart's? And taking it a big big step further for GREASE: At least the film of GREASE retained many of the Jacobs-Casey songs, just about all the Jacobs-Casey-created characters and much of the Jacobs-Casey dialogue. I'm sure the book of the new revival will be 90% Casey-Jacobs.
-
Page Thirteen Fleur Delacour Dance!!!
-
His name is Jim Jacobs, isn't it?
Yep. Oops.
-Too much wine with the pizza tonight.

Your recommendations are always most appreciated. Of course, I'd rather have a guided tour, but I'll wait until we get to NYC later in the week for that!

I'm heading for bed now.
Good night!

I'm about to go to bed, but before I do:
Austin & Laura

Yes and No. I think.
I need to write a more well thought out post/response when I'm more fully rested, and not trying to beat the clock since I really should be in bed by now - I have auditions to play in the morning.
But, I guess the best thing for me to say at this point, and this will undoubtedly lead to many more questions for me... I really shouldn't be saying anything until the show is up and running. I've been fortunate to be a part of the initial casting of this upcoming production - and I think I will continue to be. I've simply been a pianist for some of the auditions. But that also means I've been "in the room". And I personally know some of the contestants and finalists. I am very much coming from a totally subjective - and judgmental - point of view.
And I guess I should just leave it at that for now.
-
And since I do have some auditions to play for tomorrow - final callbacks, in fact...
Goodnight.
-
Oh come on, if ya got info, spill it, Jose.
:)
-
Just kidding. If there's stuff you can't talk about, that's easy to understand. But it's also clear that Jacobs has or had control over what gets done in this revival, and if he signed that control away, he must have done it of his own free will.
-
Or well-compensated will, if not free will. :)

I don't agree!
It's free willy! ;)

Here's Squeak. He's one of the cats I visited at my friend's house Friday
Oh my golly, I saw a cat just like that at the Humane Society on Friday. He was beautiful!

Willy always comes with a price. there's no such thing as free willy.

If his personality is anything like Squeak's he would make a fabulous pet

Won't mention dilly dally either!

No cheap nuts and no free Willy....
-
I think Squeak needs some Grease! Ah!
-
No cheap nuts and no free Willy....
We would be nuts to free Willy! Lavender green! ???

"Pet" in French means "fart" so your sentence could end with a gas! :o

<sigh!> Get me worried for a moment!
Thanks for "my" cat fix! The pets look gorgeous!
I never met a cat I didn't like! So sad I'm allergic to their furr!

Now Is Time To Say Goodbye To All Our Cat-pany....

Don't you love pets?
Does that mean: Don't you love farts?
-

Good casting but.... GYPSY again?!?!?
What about a drag version of it for a change?!

You mean Johnny (Laurence) Guittard, to stay with L.N. Music!

I don't know L.N. Music, but people do talk about having been to L.N. Back.

Back from a wonderfully wonderful partay and I must now sit on my couch like so much fish - I've caught up on all the lovely postings, though.
-
Will we hear how the song went, or is that an exclusive for the notes?
-
I just saw a staged reading of a new play called Showing Our Age. The small production company About Productions has been collecting stories from elderly people in LA for over 10 years and has compiled them together. Some of the material was very interesting, but the structure is not quite completed yet. There were 4 actors telling stories in different characters, and interspersed throughout the stories was a sort of plot about a 50some year old daughter trying to reconnect with and take care of her 86 year old father who is begging to suffer from Alzheimer's. Sometimes the stories and main plot interfered with each other, but I am sure they will work it all out by next year.

There is still much yard work to be done, and once spring really kicks in it will all look much nicer (everything still has that winter look to it). But it all looks much better then it did when I began Saturday morning!
Michael, those are wonderful pictures of your house and Bosco and Freddy! ;D
-
Glad you put a P in front of "lay", Andriana!
"New lay" sounded like Anthony and more... politically Korrect! LOL!
-
Jane - thanks for your comment earlier on the avatar.
BTW, did you know there's a famous tax handbook, which I used in the office yesterday, called the J.K. Lasser Tax Guide? Thought you might find that interesting.
Here's their website, in case you do find it interesting.

Freddy My Love (repeat)!
We're So Grease, Tonight!

Yesterday I went to see My Fair Lady at the Glendale Center Theater ( what better way to spend time with one's musical lovin' grandmother). In short it was not that great, but it was better than one would expect. No live music, a weak lead actress, and a chorus that had no stage presence or energy. However the rest of the main cast was strong and fun and I did enjoy parts of it, just not the parts where Eliza Dolittle had to carry a song or scene.... :(

Toby and Dylan, they told me, only care for the J.K. Lassy Bone Guide!

Friday ( I feel like I am moving backwards here) I went to Culver City to see Hubert Laws play flute like I have never heard before. I loved it!
-
That was my weekend
-
Ho-Hum
-

You mean... they did not have any stangehand to do that for her!!
Poor production indeed! ;)
-
This is his brother, Hafer
How nice that Hafer is color-coordinated with his surroundings. Great pictures of the kitties!
-
Squeak showed up on my friend Gretchen's doorstep one Christmas Eve. It was very cold out and he was just a kitten. He had some frostbite, and that's what made his ear look funny
I thought Squeak might have been one of those catch-and-release neuters. Here they notch the ears of female feral cats after they've been fixed.

Page 15 is so close

Almost as close as post #420

Yikes, it's late here in NYC
-
But 15 is almost here
-
15!
Quinzy bassa dance!
-
Oh my golly, I saw a cat just like that at the Humane Society on Friday. He was beautiful!
Don't tell Freddy!
I love your house, MBarnum. It's small and cute like mine. But your yard is in much better shape. Very pretty!
-
15!
Quinzy bassa dance!
LOL, FJL!
Time for some warbling!
-
I did a few hours of weeding and yard cleanup today, and now I feel ANCIENT.
-
That was my weekend
Well;, it could have been worse! It could have been mine!
Sorry I misspelled your name! Adriana!
-
My first shot at an avatar. I'll try to get it a little less blurry once I figure these things out.
It's a great first try, Fred! :D
-
We just watched a documentary called MY ARCHITECT. It was very well done, but a bit long. Lots of moments to reflect. It had a very nice original score by Joseph Vitarelli.
-
Wow--everyone is heading to Staples today. I am hieing it to Office Max once again to buy my office chair, which is now $30 off.
I also have a 25% off coupon for Barnes & Noble that's burning a hole in my wallet.
We dont have STaples in ND but we do have Barnes and Noble...
-
#1000 -- Hee-Hah!!
Congrats on your milestone Miss Karen!
-
Where are our Grease reports?
I liked Laura more than Ashley. And the pairing of Laura and Max did (to me) have more chemistry than any of the others. And I did want Austin and Max as the final two guys. Anyway, in both of the duets (and throughout the competition), Austin always looks like he's "acting." I've never felt that he "was" Danny. Max, on the other hand, to me really seems to "be" Danny (although the keys are a little low for him tonight). Austin does have more experience, but since "America" is voting, that doesn't really count for squat at this point. ::)
-
I never thought we'd have this many postings today. Good job.
-
Oh, the tales I could tell... And will... Tomorrow. ;)
I for one can't wait! ;D
-
George's around! We should mention something about The Manhattan Transfer!
Well, my favourite singer of the group was in the original cast of GREASE!!
He was the original Teen Angel! Do you have his solo album?? It's very, very good. If I had to choose, I'd pick Janis as my favorite, but I've seen Cheryl in person last year in a solo gig with her husband as pianist (he's very good, also!) and I've seen the group in performance six times. I also love Laurel Massé, the original soprano and founding member. ;D
-
FJL, Love your new avatar!!
Lovely pictures of your yard MBArnam and Bosco adn Freddy seem to be enjoying the fruits of your labours.
-
Well, it's the end of a long day, but it was productive and enjoyable! I finally got the new plasma TV mounted on the wall and wired in to everything. It looks pretty nifty, and I watched the Daniel Craig "Casino Royale" tonight.
I agree with a lot of what BK said a few days ago; parts of the film and the "look" of some of the scenes is really very much in the classic James Bond tradition. But some of the action scenes (and especially the very first one, right at the opening of the film) are just way too unbelievable. This is James Bond, not Batman!
However........Daniel Craig....nude.....tied to a chair......glisteny.....
Now, THAT"S what I'm talkin' about !! :)
-
And with that lovely thought......I'm off to the sleeping chamber.
Nightey night lovelies.
-
Pleasant dreams Mr. Musicguy!
-
I am over tired and slightly dehydrated...
-
Well...have a glass of water and go to sleep. ;)
-
I do hope you have a good night of sleep, Adriana. If I'm overly tired, it can be difficult for me to fall to sleep. I hate it when that happens. :-\
