BK, thanks for the Doctor Sleep report. I wonder if the pandemic events of 2020-2022 weren't a part of the movies' failure? The Shining was my first Stephen King novel. I was recuperating from a tonsillectomy around 1976, and DR Ginny brought it to me to pass the time. I think I read it in one day, too terrified to put it down and go to sleep. The next day I went to the public library and checked out 'Salem's Lot. After that, I read every King novel that came out until It, which I loathed.
I liked very little about the Kubrick film except for the ending. I thought the novel's mobile animal shrubbery would have looked ridiculous stumbling about and the maze was an interesting solution.
