Title: REHEARSAL ONE
Post by: bk on May 29, 2012, 12:51:13 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were rehearsed and flubbed no lines, and now it is time for you to post until the rehearsed cows come home.

The fellow who's projecting Nudie Musical at the midnight screening at the Nuart Theater decided to do up his own trailer for the film and the event.  Those who've seen the Nudie trailers know that they all avoided actually showing anything from the film, at least not any of the good bits, because they simply couldn't.  Today it would be a different story, and so his trailer has many of the film's highlights.  Check it out:

Goodness gracious, the things you find on You Tube.  Somebody had written me a few days ago to tell me at some point a Rocky Horror Show convention would love to have me come as a guest because apparently RHPS fans are also huge fans of Nudie.  I'd never heard that before, but I guess this is the proof - this was the pre-show entertainment dress rehearsal for the big Las Vegas Rocky Horror convention - amazing, and with most of the original choreography.

Good morning, all! Last night's final dream had me discovering the original. crumbling manuscript for the Overture to "Finian's Rainbow" on the shelf of a public library and fighting with the librarian because it was in the circulating collection. God knows what provoked that dream.

This morning, I will head back to Toyland and print the last two bass parts and consider the current round of printing and taping finished. I also need to order more paper this morning. After that, I will head to the Lincoln Center NYPL to play with historic newspapers online. That's the gist of my day.

The review from Theatermania also included a short one for the Herbert Songs, and I believe we're gettng one soon in Playbill.com.

BK, I liked the trailer for FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL, but I found the Rocky Horror Show convention weird, and not in a good way.  I don't understand these folk.

A story on the filming of "Les Miz." They're recording the vocal tracks live. I don't anybody's done that since "At Long Last Love."

http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/story/2012-05-28/les-miserables-first-look/55253344/1?loc=interstitialskip

By the way, there are two scenes from musicals in "Bernie," one with Jack Black singing "I've Never Been in Love Before" and another with him doing "76 Trombones." Very funny.

DR Ben, thanks for posting this. Steven Suskin is clearly neither an operetta fan nor a musician, as his errors in his orchestration book attest to, and it's nice to know that he appreciates "Lysistrata Jones" (I did, too, but I never want to listen to a recording of it) over German lieder. We also learn he's not one to bother looking at the contents of a recording booklet before playing a CD, and he can't discuss the progress of music on Broadway between 1894 and 1924.

He certainly lets you know he hates the CD once he mentions the dread "German songs." So, he likes "Broadway," but he can't say much good there either. chacun à son gout!

I'm not expecting everyone to like the set, and I expect that for everyone who enjoys it, another will not. That's life.

I am still a fan of Mr Suskin's work, even when I disagree wth him.

The book has many good things about it; it's not a bad overview and there's a lot of good information. I look at it quite often. When it first came out, I couldn't put it down. I am referenced in it for my thoughts on who orchestrated what for WHERE'S CHARLEY? and he certainly spoke to a number of very informed sources. I think he's needlessly hard on some orchestrators and often relies on opinions of others to praise or pan another man's work. Jack Mason comes off poorly because he's knocked for being the "stock arranger" guy, but writing a "stock arrangement," which can be played by any size group, can be a challenge since you have to cover for possible missing instruments. Those charts, when played by the full band, can be really wonderful, as you can hear on this recording of Kurt Weill's music.

He falls down in trying to analyze music and to talk about instrumental things, like playing techniques of which he knows little. He doesn't care about early 20th century American musical theatre, so he doesn't discuss Otto Langey, Harold Sanford, Emil Gerstenberger, or Frank Saddler much because he's probably heard little by them that he knows.

I got the Nook Color and I haven't had time to use it enough yet to judge whether I like it. I like being able to read a chapter or so before going to bed, but that's hardly more than five or 10 minutes

I am having a hard time checking email on it, so I have to work on that. That was one reason I wanted the Color. It was a tablet, but one that doesn't do movies or games,  neither of which I wanted.

DR Cilla has a good idea about getting extra instructions at B & N.  I'm likely doing things the hard way.

I have two issues with my Nook Color.  Sometimes the page won't turn.  The best way to fix that, IMHO, is to change to a smaller text.  Once fixed I go back to the larger text.  This really isn't a big deal to me, the big deal is tapping away trying to open the box to change the text.  My other issue is connecting to the internet.  Sometimes it takes a good many attempts to get it to work.

I can see how much better Keith's iPad is but I don't care for the size.

I set my Nook so it wouldn't automatically turn everything horizontal just because I tilted the Nook, which I tend to do when reading in bed.  When using email wait until everything is loaded before opening or deleting anything otherwise it is too easy to press on the wrong box.

I did something while cooking that surprisingly has never happened to me before. I was making meatballs to take to my nieces. And usually i put them in the pot after the water is boiling. But for some reason the water was not completely boiled (not sure why it took so long). Anyhow i put half of them in and they started to separate. :(

I ended up emptying the pot and taking some of the separated meat and putting the raw meat around it. That worked. Only there was still extra separated meat left. Sloppy Joes anyone? :)

Luckily there is not too much loose meat and there is a nice sauce. So it should be okay. It just really bugged me that it happened.

I'm afraid most of my Kiev photographs have turned out disastrously. I think I had the camera on the wrong settings. I fly back home tomorrow. Will try to get some better pictures before then.

Much cooler today in the Midwest and MILD temperatures predicted for the rest of the week as DR BEN reported.

I have the Epub reader....a Firefox service, I think.  It was free for my computer since I don't one of those FANCY readers.

Unfortunately....one of the books I have....is UPSIDE DOWN in the reader.....and there is no way to turn it over.....most unusual.
You could get creative and hook up some mirrors and spend who knows how many dollars so you can read your free book.  ;D

Have you inadvertently changed an exposure +/- control?  Got the white balance wrong?  Bad speed setting?  Those are the things that have tripped me up on more than one occasion.

From DR John G:
Quote

I, too, have the page turn problem.

BTW, I found a ton of pre-1923 cookbooks for free downloads from BN this morning. Can't wait to explore those. I love old-timey cookbooks.

It seems to only be a problem with the Nook Color.  I guess that is the trade off for reading at night.  Play with the color options every once in awhile.  I just recently changed mine.

Congrats on the free cook books.

Taco Bell is my first choice.  But I also love Taco Del Mar.  They have a rewards punch card and Monday is their double-punch day!  Normally, 10 punches on the card will get you either a free burrito or $5 off your order (depending on what kind of card they use...it changes), so if you go on Mondays, you only have to go five times, instead of ten.

DR Ben, the exhibits at the Lincoln Center library are wonderful! The one on the main floor is a Noel Coward exhibit: costumes, posters, sheet music, video clips, photos, ephemera, lyric sheets, Bea Lillie's sctipt for HIGH SPIRITS, all accompanied by a wonderful soundtrack of Coward songs. It's quite an event.

The exhibit downstairs on Amsterdam Avenue is a history of revue: scripts, music, posters, photos of the Zeigfeld Follies, George White Scandals, Garrick Gaieties, Lufe Begins at 8:40, Pins and Needles and others. They are both very wonderful exhibits.

So, I am home, the AC has been turned on, and I will chill out for a bit.

Thanks for the report. I've heard wonderful things about the Coward exhibit. We are planning a visit after we return from Minnesota. I didn't know about the Revue exhibit. We will have to make two trips. One for Coward and one for the Revues.

Ugh, it's hot (I'm a baby when it comes to heat). I may turn on the AC and sit in the bedroom. Anthony is blissful in the living room where it is just as hot (we only have AC in one room).

I have to tell you that ever since I wrote the notes talking about edge enhancement, aside from one person trying to make trouble and failing miserably, it seems to have actually had an effect - there hasn't been ONE post about edge enhancement in the Journey to the Center of the Earth thread since.  Not one.  There HAS been one post by someone who recently saw the disc saying he did not see one iota of edge enhancement.  I think I made it so easy to understand and so irrefutable, that it finally shut up the know-it-alls, who have, of course, disappeared completely from the thread.  But that doesn't mean they didn't cause some damage with their posts, but hopefully from now on they'll think twice about their witch hunt knee-jerk posts and really try to understand what they're seeing.

I guess Ben, and Jack, and I will have to be the Spam Fan Club.  And how can you eat a burger in Hawaii without a slice of Spam on it?

EASILY! :P

I usually fry them in a bit of oil with green onions or a green pepper......meatballs, that is.
Since when I .ake them I usually make 20-30 I do not think they would all fit in a fry pan. I have been boiling then and then letting them simmer in a sauce for quite a few years.

Now I'm off to the grocery with a list of what we don't need.  It was easier than listing what we do.

Funny!

DR JRand61, good news....Fox is starting their own MOD dvds, and the first batch of titles coming up include some of their obscure B movies....this may be our chance to FINALLY see Allison Haye's HIGH POWERED RIFLE!!!

I am shocked that Willard Parker got higher billing than Allison.

Obviously, he was sleeping with the producer....something Allison would never have done.

I love Ruthie Henshall so much . She is one of my most favorite musical theatre performers. I have seen her live in NYC in both Chicago and Putting it Together. I absolutely love her on the cd of She Loves Me. And Crazy For You.

Oh, Sour Cream Meatballs sound yummy!

I used to make some pretty good Sweet and Sour Meatballs, if I do say so myself.

I need to get a good pan for making meatballs. They always seem to stick.

Hello.  I'm back from Buffalo. I'm glad to say my trip went without a hitch.  Sorry to hear about your ordeal, DR Ginny!

You must be on a ffirst-name basis with the entire airline.

Not sure about that, TCB!  I took Southwest today, but I have taken Delta flights to JFK several times in the last year.

His wife was named Rotunda.

The meatballs with some loose meat actually turned out pretty well. The loose meat sort of blended into the sauce.

Sort of caught up. I've really been enjoying listening to the Tornado Hunt online.  They are off line tonight, but it's pretty exciting to be riding along as hail slams into the vehicle etc.   There weren't as many funny comments as the other night, but it was still cool to listen to it.

Including a new Swedish/Danish series called The Bridge.  Anyone seen it?

I mentioned that series a couple of times recently. It's excellent. Good performances, script, direction. Let down somewhat by the ending.
