The review from Theatermania also included a short one for the Herbert Songs, and I believe we're gettng one soon in Playbill.com.
And the word of the day is: ASPERSE!
Dear Larry,
I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but the Playbill Steven Suskin review is less than stellar
Victor Herbert (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/166353-ON-THE-RECORD-Lysistrata-Jones-and-the-Collected-Songs-of-Victor-Herbert)
Oh, that's who Suskin is! I've always been fascinated with orchestration and I bought his book, but so far have only flipped through it. Oy! Sorry to hear it's going to be so prone to error.
We are off to Minnesota in two days. We leave on Thursday morning and return on Monday afternoon. My nephew is graduating from high school and also turning 18 so there is a big party planned.
The fellow who's projecting Nudie Musical at the midnight screening at the Nuart Theater decided to do up his own trailer for the film and the event. Those who've seen the Nudie trailers know that they all avoided actually showing anything from the film, at least not any of the good bits, because they simply couldn't. Today it would be a different story, and so his trailer has many of the film's highlights. Check it out:

DR Ben, thanks for posting this. Steven Suskin is clearly neither an operetta fan nor a musician, as his errors in his orchestration book attest to, and it's nice to know that he appreciates "Lysistrata Jones" (I did, too, but I never want to listen to a recording of it) over German lieder. We also learn he's not one to bother looking at the contents of a recording booklet before playing a CD, and he can't discuss the progress of music on Broadway between 1894 and 1924.
He certainly lets you know he hates the CD once he mentions the dread "German songs." So, he likes "Broadway," but he can't say much good there either. chacun à son gout!
I'm not expecting everyone to like the set, and I expect that for everyone who enjoys it, another will not. That's life.
I am still a fan of Mr Suskin's work, even when I disagree wth him.
BELATED BIRTHDAY WISHES TO DEAR DR ARNOLD BROCKMAN!!!!!!!!
thankfully, the earthquake in Italy is hours north of where I'll be.
But you have recently seen THE BEGINNING OF THE END and EARTH vs THE SPIDER....so you are getting culturized as time goes by.
And in other Pleasure Programmed (TM) approved news: according to the infallible wags at Reader's Digest, one of Laura Nyro's early champions was none other than Stephen Sondheim.

That sounds logical. A lot of Laura Nyro's early champions were gay.
Lost internet upon making that last post. Don't have all access back yet, but got through here okay. Now what was I going to say???It was because you stole my page two thunder. ;D
Thank you. I'll pack my hairshirt. I doubt the flagellum would make it through customs.thankfully, the earthquake in Italy is hours north of where I'll be.
Evevyone will still blame you.

Is that because she was a lesbian?
I got the Nook Color and I haven't had time to use it enough yet to judge whether I like it. I like being able to read a chapter or so before going to bed, but that's hardly more than five or 10 minutes
I am having a hard time checking email on it, so I have to work on that. That was one reason I wanted the Color. It was a tablet, but one that doesn't do movies or games, neither of which I wanted.
And, yes, I can be seen in the background quite clearly for a second or two in two scenes, including one in which I'm singing "Just As I Am" along with Jack Black.
Good morning, all! Last night's final dream had me discovering the original. crumbling manuscript for the Overture to "Finian's Rainbow" on the shelf of a public library and fighting with the librarian because it was in the circulating collection. God knows what provoked that dream.

Yes, I'll be around tomorrow. We leave for the airport on Thursday morning at 6:15am!

A very nice attitude, elmore.
It's been very warm and humid in New York all weekend but it's supposed to cool down by Thursday when we leave for Minnesota, but it's also supposed to be nice in Minnesota by that time as well.
From DR John G:I, too, have the page turn problem.QuoteI got the Nook Color and I haven't had time to use it enough yet to judge whether I like it. I like being able to read a chapter or so before going to bed, but that's hardly more than five or 10 minutes

DR Cilla has a good idea about getting extra instructions at B & N. I'm likely doing things the hard way.
I have two issues with my Nook Color. Sometimes the page won't turn. The best way to fix that, IMHO, is to change to a smaller text. Once fixed I go back to the larger text. This really isn't a big deal to me, the big deal is tapping away trying to open the box to change the text. My other issue is connecting to the internet. Sometimes it takes a good many attempts to get it to work.
I can see how much better Keith's iPad is but I don't care for the size.
I set my Nook so it wouldn't automatically turn everything horizontal just because I tilted the Nook, which I tend to do when reading in bed. When using email wait until everything is loaded before opening or deleting anything otherwise it is too easy to press on the wrong box.
I'm afraid most of my Kiev photographs have turned out disastrously. I think I had the camera on the wrong settings. I fly back home tomorrow. Will try to get some better pictures before then.Bummer.
Much cooler today in the Midwest and MILD temperatures predicted for the rest of the week as DR BEN reported. You could get creative and hook up some mirrors and spend who knows how many dollars so you can read your free book. ;D
I have the Epub reader....a Firefox service, I think. It was free for my computer since I don't one of those FANCY readers.
Unfortunately....one of the books I have....is UPSIDE DOWN in the reader.....and there is no way to turn it over.....most unusual.

BTW, I found a ton of pre-1923 cookbooks for free downloads from BN this morning. Can't wait to explore those. I love old-timey cookbooks.

I haven't had spam for years but I do like a fried spam sandwich with cheese (out of the diet nowadays)

Me too. But I have already moved on to my newest craving. Tacos! Either from Taco Time (first choice) or Taco Bell.

Have you inadvertently changed an exposure +/- control? Got the white balance wrong? Bad speed setting? Those are the things that have tripped me up on more than one occasion.

Spam is nice on white bread with Hellman's Mayo and Velveeta Cheese.
Yes, I am a gourmand.

Doug, are you a spy by any chance?
I guess Ben, and Jack, and I will have to be the Spam Fan Club. And how can you eat a burger in Hawaii without a slice of Spam on it?

Taco Bell is my first choice. But I also love Taco Del Mar. They have a rewards punch card and Monday is their double-punch day! Normally, 10 punches on the card will get you either a free burrito or $5 off your order (depending on what kind of card they use...it changes), so if you go on Mondays, you only have to go five times, instead of ten.

My mother used to make the most incredible porcupine meatballs.

DR Ben, the exhibits at the Lincoln Center library are wonderful! The one on the main floor is a Noel Coward exhibit: costumes, posters, sheet music, video clips, photos, ephemera, lyric sheets, Bea Lillie's sctipt for HIGH SPIRITS, all accompanied by a wonderful soundtrack of Coward songs. It's quite an event.
The exhibit downstairs on Amsterdam Avenue is a history of revue: scripts, music, posters, photos of the Zeigfeld Follies, George White Scandals, Garrick Gaieties, Lufe Begins at 8:40, Pins and Needles and others. They are both very wonderful exhibits.
So, I am home, the AC has been turned on, and I will chill out for a bit.

Count me in, too! For a hot-weather meal, my Mom used to make a chef's salad using strips of fried Spam instead of ham & turkey. With French dressing, it was one of my favorite summertime dinners.
I have to tell you that ever since I wrote the notes talking about edge enhancement, aside from one person trying to make trouble and failing miserably, it seems to have actually had an effect - there hasn't been ONE post about edge enhancement in the Journey to the Center of the Earth thread since. Not one. There HAS been one post by someone who recently saw the disc saying he did not see one iota of edge enhancement. I think I made it so easy to understand and so irrefutable, that it finally shut up the know-it-alls, who have, of course, disappeared completely from the thread. But that doesn't mean they didn't cause some damage with their posts, but hopefully from now on they'll think twice about their witch hunt knee-jerk posts and really try to understand what they're seeing.

DR JRand61, good news....Fox is starting their own MOD dvds, and the first batch of titles coming up include some of their obscure B movies....this may be our chance to FINALLY see Allison Haye's HIGH POWERED RIFLE!!!

I guess Ben, and Jack, and I will have to be the Spam Fan Club. And how can you eat a burger in Hawaii without a slice of Spam on it?
EASILY! :P
I usually fry them in a bit of oil with green onions or a green pepper......meatballs, that is.Since when I .ake them I usually make 20-30 I do not think they would all fit in a fry pan. I have been boiling then and then letting them simmer in a sauce for quite a few years.
Now I'm off to the grocery with a list of what we don't need. It was easier than listing what we do.
Yum. this sounds good (or maybe I just to take a trip to Ikea).MEATBALLS BAKED IN SOUR CREAM

The meatballs with some loose meat actually turned out pretty well. The loose meat sort of blended into the sauce.
Including a new Swedish/Danish series called The Bridge. Anyone seen it?
