Well, you've read the notes, you're feeling the San Francisco vibe, and now it is time for you to post until the San Francisco Cows come home. To it, I say.
-
And the word of the day is: RATATOUILLE!
-
McDonald's Filet-O-Fish with slivered onions added and Skipper's regular fish with dill tartar sauce. That's pretty much the extent of fish that I like. I don't have recipes, either. Sorry.
-
Don't much care for fish and rarely...very rarely...eat it. I especially do not understand the allure of any kind of shellfish or sushi.
-
Good morning, all! I'm home today taking care of all the homebound requirements before a colonoscopy. I am not looking forward to any of this.
So, I slept late. Manhattan seems very quiet for a cold Monday morning, but I like this wintery weather. I'll work on the concert orchestrations today and see how far I get.
TOD:
Grilled tuna
Grilled salmon
clam chowder
shrimp in many Italian and Chinese dishes
fried oyesters
oyster stew
scallops
no calamari, no octopus EVER!!!!
-
Monday greetings! It's cold, cold, cold here and supposed to get colder.
TOD - grilled salmon, steamed Alaskan king crab legs, trout almondine, fried clams (the best I've ever had were on the pier in Avon by the Sea, NJ), clam dip, broiled scallops, tuna - cold in salads and hot in noodle casseroles.
-
I love fish...salmon, trout, eel are favorites. Fried Catfish, all types of shellfish, octopus, it's all good!
-
Boy, not many posts this morning. It is a good thing that BK is in San Francisco and not near his bitch-slapping contraption!
-

The San Francisco Cows live in the Cow Palace, right?

The Littlest Angel, with Johnny Whitaker and Fred Gwynne, was a Hallmark Hall of Fame production. As I recall, it was also the first (or one of) to use the Chroma-Key system, where actors performed in front of a blue screen and the backgrounds were added later.
-
Time to get to work. The phone rang about an hour ago, asking me to come in on a day off, so I'm on again.
We may get snow this afternoon!

Good Morning all...
I'm not m,uch of a fish person.... I like the Fish & Chips at an English style "chippy" in place in Grand Prairie, Canada... I think its fried cod... but I must put lots of tartar sauce and lemon on the fish....
I do like shrimp, dipped in cocktail sauce wih lemon, or just about anyway its cooked.
I had some wonderful scallops cooked at a hibachi restaurant in Ocotober and once had a wonderful scallop dish that had the scallops in a lovely sherry/cream sauce and served in something that resemled the botom of a pie shell only it was made of mashed potatoes that had been mixed witrh chheses and then browened under the broiler... I cxaqnnot remember the name of the dish... no doubt Woody or Jose could tell us
I once was at a fancy Christmas party in a French restaurant in DC and had a lovely lobster dish... agian servedin a sherry/cream sauce....
(maybe its actually sherry/cream sauces I like and not the fish.....hmmmm)
For my tuna sandwiches I prefer Starkist light (not white) tuna, packed in spring water, well drained and mixed witha little Kraft mayo and lemon and preferably served on toasted rye or a toasted onion bagel
I like crab cakes when I'm in Maryland... everybody else's seem like so much bread crumbs with a sprinkling of crab juice.....
And my mother makes a wonderful hot crab dip every Christmas
I don't care for any raw fish or shellfish and I am not really much of a fish eater although I'm told salmon is really very good for you.......
-
Elmore... ~~~VIBES~~~ for excellent test results
-
Continued ~~~~HEALTH VIBES~~~~ for dear Danise
you are officially on the prayer lsit at my church now so there's a whole bunch of Lutherans praying for ya!
-
DR ELMORE good vibes on your journey to the center of YOU.
DR MBARNUM I am so glad you enjoyed AVENTURERA...it is indeed a LOT of movie for one movie! And I always thought that the dance routines were pretty expensive and extensive to mount in a Mexican Whorehouse, but I guess that's ENTERTAINMENT!!
-
Does Guy Haines have to blow up his own balloons? Will Mr Sondheim himself be in attendance? Are there LOTS of dance numbers?
Will the young girl report immediately to headquarters that she spotted Guy Haines? Interesting.....
-
I like fish sticks with ketchup and french fries.
I like shrimp.
I like bananas, because they have no bones.
-
I used to love Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips. The deep frying chased away all those pesky nutritious vitamins.
I love shrimp and lobster, but I hate having to rip apart the lobster, so I prefer the lobster tails to a whole lobster. And if you're of a mind to splurge, they sell frozen lobster meat at many fish stores, although that's QUITE expensive.
-
Good morning!
We have a thoroughly miserable day here with cold temperatures, very rainy gray skies, and just plain old yuck!
But we needed the rain, so I won't complain about it any more.
-
I'm not much of a fish lover either, though fried flounder is very good.
Now, I like other seafood like shrimp and scallops much more than fish.
-
Read the section in the Champion biography about JUPITER'S DARLING this morning. I have the movie on laserdisc and admit it's never been one of my favorites, but since my memories of it are so vague, I will need to pull it out at some point this week and watch it again.
-
Just a note for fans of either or both of the shows:
Fox is burning off its remaining episodes of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT and KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL starting tonight, so if you like either or both, better watch them now.
I read that Brian Grazer is shopping ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT around to other networks and cable channels (including Showtime) in an attempt to save it. I'll be interested to see if anyone wants it.
-
I like fish sticks with ketchup and french fries.
I like shrimp.
I like bananas, because they have no bones.
The things you learn at HHW! I always thought bananas were a waste: once you skin them and throw away the bone there's nothing there.
-
We're in for a bitchslapping...I can feel it coming.
I love fish, and most seafood in general. Salmon, baked with a sauce I concocted made of mayo, crushed garlic, lime juice, and a sprinkle of seafood seasoning...very good. Also just grilled salmon is excellent. Also love cod, made with lemon pepper seasoning, fish and chips, tuna, halibut...all so good. Seafood chowders and pasta dishes are always excellent.
I'm a tad more picky about shellfish. I like crab, clams, and scallops, but only in certain forms and/or dishes. Clam chowder or fried clams are excellent. Crab salad or just fresh crab is good. Shrimp can be wonderful, but the really big ones scare me. Never much cared for oysters. Can't stand sushi.
-
The San Francisco Cows live in the Cow Palace, right?
Only the royal cows. The King (technically, a bull) and the Queen (an actual female cow rather than a gay cow in drag), two princes (one of whom we wonder about) and four princesses (one is over 30 and rides a motorcycle). Oh, and the Dowager cow (who's a real bitch).
All the rest live in valleys and glens and dells around the City.
-
Sushi, ugh! I dated a restaurant critic once, and he took me along when he was reviewing a new Japanese restaurant. This was my first (and last) experience with sushi. The dishes we had later were fine (and he said the sushi was excellent), but I didn't like anything I sampled from the sushi platter.
-
I do not fear the bitch slapping machine. I was here posting like a good little boy.
-
A friend just called and we're doing lunch in a little while, so I must get myself up from here and get a shower.
WBBL.

What is the TOD? FISH?
Well, I admit I was not much of a fish person most of my life. I grew up eating fried catfish, trout, crappie and bass, plus fried shrimp. This would be on average of once a week. I neither loved it or hated it. I did hate the bones which were almost always present in everything except shrimp.
When we would go to the beach in the summer, I would indulge in fried red snapper (LOVED it. And while I never ordered it, I'd always enjoy a taste of my mom's order of lobster.
My father loved a good oyster stew, and that would be supper on Friday nights sometimes. I'd settle for the liquid and oyster crackers (or I could go without).
In fact, most of my fish eating when I lived with my parents -- with the exception of an occasional shrimp cocktail -- was of the "fried" variety.
Once, however, when I was a senior in high school, my mom came home and announced we were having fish for supper. Her boss had been deep sea fishing and had brought her a considerable amount of blue dolphin (fish, not mammal). This was probably the most wonderful fish I've ever tasted. My mom baked it. We had enough for several meals. My father had enough the first time, but my mom would prepare some for me while giving my father something else.
All of this notwithstanding, I have not, in my adult life, made much effort (until the past couple of years) to include fish in my diet.
When I was in Italy where I learned to adore calamari (that's fried squid, which is quite tasty). I tried other dishes...clams on spaghetti and clams on other kinds of pasta...but ...no...it never really set well with me. I can eat virtually anything fried...oysters, clams, etc. But never anything slimy. Too much like eating snot.
During my carrier tours of duty, the Chief's Mess would often serve fresh lobster or crab...and I really enjoyed it.
In the past couple of years, though, I've gotten very much "into" grilled salmon, halibut, swordfish, trout, sole and tuna. Nothing tastes as sweetly delicious as grilled fresh fish with complementary herbs. I also love "blackened" anything (cajun-style).
I've tried sushi. I have. Twice. The folks around me were just beside themselves with gustatorial glee. And I was chewing and chewing and chewing and wondering if anything pleasurable or remotely tasty would come from any of it. Sadly, sushi leaves me cold. And, yes! I tried all the different sauces and dips with bites of food. I can burn the crap out of my tongue and mouth without having to deal with raw fish, too.
That's my "what is it, fish" story. And I'm stickin' to it.

I am thuis close to cancelling except we don't have anything better....to go to at the moment....the Dolan family really has us all over a barrel.....

I watched "The Polar Express" yesterday.
What an AMAZING film.
I'm really not sure how I felt about it, although I enjoyed it and loved watching it. It will be watched again...oh, yes.
Those dancing waiters on the train deserve many viewings.
And the elves in the big square establishing a level of excitement as they began chanting Santa's name was quite marvelous.
I thought the songs were wonderful, too.
What I haven't figured out is....why do the characters move so realistically and naturally? Did they film people acting out the scenes and then computer-generate the characters from them (like they did with Gollum in LOTR)?
-
I suppose I should start a countdown on my final work week of 2005:
Four and a wake-up!
-
Happy Fish Dance
-
DR ELMORE fired banana bones are a favorite with some people, as are dried banana bones.
WAKE UP, MR BK!!!
-
Debra...there is ALWAYS satellite!!!
The local satellite companies charge even more than the cable guys do, and from what some of neighbors (who have satellite) say.. the system is constantly "going down " when it snows or rains or is excessively windy.....
We heard a snippet of a news item on the TV last night saying that some local legislator is trying to pass some law that cable must let you choose your channels or that they cannot delete channels from your current package... but it was one of those 'see the whole story tomorrow...." things so I am trying to find out the details....

I envy you!!!

I'm up, I'm up. Slept through the night okay in the toy bed (twin beds, what a joke). Woke up and went to print out my boarding pass for the morning and realized I don't have a printer. So, I went downstairs to the "business center" - out of order. I went into the sales/catering office and asked if I could print out a document - you'd have thought I was from outer space. They finally realized I wasn't someone to say "no" to, and they let me get on someone's computer and print out the boarding pass.
-
I think tonight is Charlize Theron's last guest appearance on AD.
-
Now, I have to wait until a store opens so I can get a hairbrush and a Diet Coke (this hotel is hopeless - no store, no room service, no mini-bar, no nothing).
My call time is supposedly at 1:00. I don't know if that means I go at one and sit around for a while, or if I work and then go back to the hotel, or if I just hang until show time. I'll find all that out at 12:00. They said they'd have someone pick me up or that I'll take a cab and I'll get reimbursed.

Last December, we had our second biggest month ever. This December we're on our way into the terlet. For example, let me just spew out the following names: Ben, DearReaderLaura, Sandra, and, and, and. Where in tarnation ARE they? Don't they know this is a holiday month with MANY birthdays and events to celebrate?

DR Ron, THE POLAR EXPRESS was made using a new technology called "capture motion" where sensors are attached all over the face and body of the actors as they act their roles in real time. Then the sensors send the data to computers who digitize it against the standard CGI backgrounds in typical computer animation. This gives the human characters in the film a real feeling of being real (as opposed to the few humans in something like TOY STORY which seems much less human.
-
DR Ron - The "Hot Chocolate" number was my favorite part of The Polar Express, too. Very Broadway, I thought.

Ah! Technology.

It put me in mind of "The Waiter's Galop" from "Hello, Dolly!"
It was fun!

It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas!

We have not seen The Polar Express... I shall have to rent it

In the "kids say the darnedest things" department:
JACK (age 3) was watching his Mom breast-feeding his new baby sister. After a while he asked: "Mom why have you got two? Is one for hot and one for cold milk?"
MELANIE (age 5) asked her Granny how old she was. Granny replied she was so old she didn't remember any more. Melanie said, "If you don't remember you just look in the back of your panties. Mine say five to six."
STEVEN (age 3) hugged and kissed his Mom goodnight. "I love you so much, that when you die I'm going to bury you outside my bedroom window."
BRITTANY (age 4) had an earache and needed a painkiller. She tried in vain to take the lid off the bottle. Seeing her frustration, her Mom explained it was a childproof cap and she'd have to open it for her. Eyes wide with wonder, the little girl asked: "How does it know it's me?
SUSAN (age 4) was drinking juice when she got the hiccups. "Please don't give me this juice again," she said, "It makes my teeth cough."
DAVID (age 4) stepped onto the bathroom scale and asked: "How much do I cost?"
MARC (age 4) was engrossed in a young couple that were hugging and kissing in a restaurant. Without taking his eyes off them, he asked his dad: "Why is he whispering in her mouth?"
CLINTON (age 5) was in his bedroom looking worried. When his Mom asked what was troubling him, he replied, "I don't know what'll happen with this bed when I get married. How will my wife fit in?"
JAMES (age 4) was listening to a Bible story. His dad read: "The man named Lot was warned to take his wife and flee out of the city but his wife looked back and was turned to salt." Concerned, James asked: "What happened to the flea?"
TAMMY (age 4) was with her mother when they met an elderly, rather wrinkled woman her Mom knew. Tammy looked at her for awhile and then asked, "Why doesn't your skin fit your face?"
The Sermon one Mom will never forget.... On one particular Sunday ..."Dear Lord," the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. "Without you, we are but dust." He would have continued but at that moment a very obedient daughter (who was listening!) leaned over to and asked her mother, quite audibly in her shrill little girl voice, "Mom, what is butt-dust?"

Well I do not want to read the posts and not post myself. So here is my post!
I am feeling better. But the antibiotics I'm taking make me feel very out of it. And they don't even say "my cause drowsiness". :(
-
I know several people who are but dust.
-
Mr Bk buy something nice so that it will always be known as the Stephen Sondheim San Francisco Brushing Implement!
One nice thing about having NO hair - I NEVER have to pack a hairbrush or comb!
-
I shall now go and try to find a hairbrush and a Diet Coke, not necessarily in that order. I shall then come back, shave, shower, and maybe do a bit of work before heading over to rehearsal.

Recipe for Clam Dip
3 oz. cream cheese, softened
1 jar Kraft Roka Blue (pictured below)
1 small can minced clams, drained (save juice)
Chopped onion, if desired
Splash of Worchestershire Sauce
Salt & pepper to taste
Mix all ingredients and chill. Bring to room temp before serving; thin with clam juice if necessary. Serve with chips (Reduced Fat Ruffles are my favorite)
-
Oh, yes...clam juice.
-
JRand55, did you see that Herbert Strock passed away the other day?
-
Things you learn whilst staying in Japantown: There are no Japanese stores of any kind that carry something known as a hairbrush. I had to walk about eight blocks to find a market, and even then, they had the weirdest selection of hairbrushes I've ever seen. Hopefully, the one I purchased will get the job done.
I bought some melon balls or whatever that cut-up stuff is, and I must say it's the worst melon I've ever tasted.
I did, however, get a proper Diet Coke.

Can you see Coy Tower from your hotel?
-
Is Mr Sondheim staying at the Hisaka Hotel?
-
Are you meeting with any of our SF Hainsies whilst you are there?
-
~~~~~VIBES~~~~~~~~~
for Mr. Haines on his performance tonight
Which hotel has he been put in?
-
Can you see Coy Tower from your hotel?
Do you mean "Koi" tower, as in the fish?
Or as in Coit Tower, the name of the tower in San Francisco?
:)
-
Are you meeting with any of our SF Hainsies whilst you are there?
By the time I realized he was going to be in S.F., I was fighting a cold that I am still fighting.
Since he is "singing" tonight, the last person he needs to be around is someone who might give him a sore throat...or strep.
I've long wanted to be a part of some H/K gathering, even if it's just two people.
But he's better off not seeing me this go-round.
:(
-
Coit - :)
-
Oh, yes...clam juice.
It really grosses my family out when I leave the jar of clam juice in the refrigerator too long!
-
Is Mr Sondheim staying at the Hisaka Hotel?
Here's the funny thing: All along, I've been told that Sondheim's assistant has said that Steve is being very cooperative and sending them lots of stuff. That would imply that Steve (Mr. S) is indeed being very cooperative and allowing his assistant to be helpful, at least that's the way they're seeing it up here. I asked a few weeks ago if he was coming up, and they said they hadn't had word, but didn't think so.
When I asked Steve for the signed musical quote, I told him that Mr. Haines would be up there, performing, and that they were doing the Yiddish Sondheim thing from What If (I later found out they weren't - and they SHOULD have done it, because the show needs something like that). When he sent me the musical quote, he wrote that he didn't even know about the SF thing - hadn't heard about it at all, and no, he wasn't going.
He then asked me to send him a copy of the Yiddish Sondheim thing. This I would like to do - so, can someone who has one of the DVDs I sent out, please copy just that number onto a DVD-R, and send it to me?
Oh, and the signed musical quote from Sweeney Todd fetched over $500.
-
We have not seen The Polar Express... I shall have to rent it
Library factoid for today - my system has 52 copies of the DVD, all checked out, with a request list of 382!
-
Now I can watch KING OF QUEENS, switch to KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL, and back for Two and Half Men and Out of Practice.
I can SKIP the terrible HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (even though I like Neil Patrick Harris).
At least that got rid of that terribly written and acted STILL STANDING on Monday night and moved it to Wednesday or Thursday or something.
-
Signed SWEENEY TODD musical quote for $500....sounds like a BARGAIN.
I don't have a DV-R copier. :(
-
Wow DRGINNY - maybe I should watch POLAR EXPRESS. It just didn't look like my kind of movie.
They are advertising the LORD OF THE RINGS exhibit heavily, DRGINNY, so there might be some lines or waiting for the exhibit!
-
I have never heard of Roka blue? What on earth is it?
I hope you feel better poor Ron!
-
It really grosses my family out when I leave the jar of clam juice in the refrigerator too long!
ten seconds would be too long for me!
:P
-
I didn't even know there was a Japantown, only a Chinatown in SF. I remember walking around there. And also having some kind of chowder in a bread bowl.
Btw, BK why do you need a hairbrush?
Do men even use hairbrushes? I thought they only used combs! :)
-
Library factoid for today - my system has 52 copies of the DVD, all checked out, with a request list of 382!
maybe I shall have to buy it! ;D
And now - Dino at the piano.
They are advertising the LORD OF THE RINGS exhibit heavily, DRGINNY, so there might be some lines or waiting for the exhibit!
We've already purchased our timed tickets for 11am Sunday, right when the museum opens. If we get there early enough Saturday, we'll go pick them up so we can proceed right to the exhibit Sunday morning.
-
Maybe that girl from the other label is supposed to be contacting Stephen Sondheim.
-
Maybe you can just stand outside the theatre and wave as he passes..... ;)
I hope you feel better poor Ron!
I also hope you feel better.
That first comment reminded me of me Friday waving to my 11 week old niece through her glass door. I think I looked pathetic! :(
Right now the plan is to go there on Wednesday night to view the Season Finale of America's Next Top Model (I don't get UPN).
-
I have never heard of Roka blue? What on earth is it?
Cheese spread with a blue cheese flavor - not to everyone's liking. It can be hard to find in stores around here.
-
Clam juice? How hard to you have to squeeze the damn clam?
I've never heard of it. It sounds good though. I've never tried clam dip. I didn't study the recipe. But don't you have to put the clams in a food processor or something. Or do you eat them all whole and lumpy. That sounds so weird. Although like I said i've never tried clam dip.
-
No, the people at the other place met with the fellow who is putting the show together (prior to him getting in touch with me) - when he queried them about recording the show (he was put together with them by the person who is now ostensibly "running" the company), they said they didn't think Sondheim sold. That was enough for him, and that, along with some other statements they made, led him to contact me and meet with me in LA.
DR Jennifer - If you purchase canned minced clams, they're chopped up pretty fine.
Re: last night's DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES.
SPOILERS
.
.
.
I still don't like the Applewhite story.
Susan's story with her father is just okay. It was slightly amusing watching his wife chase after Susan. But really I don't see the point.
The daycare story was okay. Perhaps it was done so lynnette might have some interaction with her kids.
I think the Gabby story with the nun is pretty hilarious. The evil nun who looks like an angel is funny. Although not sure if she will be on again.
Bree's story sort of dropped the ball this week. I did like the beginning scenes with the police at george's house. And i liked how Bree held her head high. And I liked when she told the other women. But I don't know if i want to see her son go after her. And I hate how her son is acting. I didn't mind the part of the scene in the bedroom (andrew and justin) when they were discussing andrew's plan to go after his mom. But the whole idea of him telling Bree that he could do what he wanted in his room sort of made me cringe. Especially since the Bree we all know would never allow that.
I will be curious to see if he uses the info she told him. Usually we'd see a huge grin. But I almost thought he might keep the info to himself.
-
DR Jennifer - If you purchase canned minced clams, they're chopped up pretty fine.
I missed the word minced. Although I don't think i've ever heard of minced clams (which is probably why i didn't notice the word). The only clams i've ever used/bought are the whole clams.
Got an e-mail from Hildy's new family:
Mike,
Sorry not to get back to you first thing this morning. I am a little slow today.
Brent loves Hildy! We had her in the car when we picked him up from his buddies. We told him that his present was in there and would he like to open it early. Of course he said yes! He got in the car and immediately had tears in his eyes. He was speechless. He was thrilled.
Hildy had a great time in the snow. She is a great dog. She even ate last night. We cheated by putting some canned food in. She hadn't eaten until last night. Thanks so much.
Pam
It made me very happy!
-
DR MBarnum - That mom's story brought tears to my eyes!
-
DR elmore - How are you holding up? There's a similar procedure in my future and I'm not looking forward to it.
-
Things are calm enough that I can actually post during work today.
-
Same for me. I also got a tear in my eye reading DR MBarnum's story.
-
"Baffling" is a good description of how I find San Francisco.
-
I like Captain D's, Long John Silver's, Arthur Treacher's...
On a finer note, crab and lobster are good. Catfish. When I am in the midwest, good ol' lake perch.
-
Thinking about Hildy romping around in the snow (they evidently took her with them to go find a Christmas tree) made me a bit teary eyed too...and made me miss her!
Oddly enough, Freddy does not seem to miss Hildy at all! LOL!
And little does Freddy know that I will be babysitting Digger for a week this month!
-
I am glad that Hildy found a good home....you are a nice man Mike Barnum!
At least you still have your Freddy to cuddle up with on these snowy days and nights!
-
Mr Rodzinski, you have been missed! How are you feeling?
Clam juice? How hard to you have to squeeze the damn clam?
JRand...you don't SQUEEZE the clams...you startle them...and the juice comes immediately afterward....
:D
DOG FINDS HOME!!
Doris Day would be pleased!
-
Went for a lively lunch with friends (nope, didn't have fish; I had fried chicken). It is still raining and the temperature is falling.
-
I am very excited as the new Bollywood hit movie GARAM MASALA is playing in Portland this Sunday!!
And it starts John Abraham! Woohoo! I might just have to go and see it.
-
DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES comment - - -
Andrew is playing a dangerous game with Bree and retaliation because Bree knows that Andrew killed Carlos' mother and fled the scene of the accident (this happened last season).
-
Hate fish, always have, always will. Even when I ate meat, I hated fish, probably because I, as the youngest, was always the designated fish cleaner when we went fishing as a family. The only part I liked was throwing the "floater" back into the water. Ugh. :-X
Here's my funny SF story: circa 1967, my father, the Army General, had to go to the Presidio to review some troops. He took me along, the first time I had ever been there. We were driven around town in a stretch limo (don't ask me why the Army had one, but they did), and my Dad asked the limo driver, who was probably a PFC, to go down Lombard Street. In a stretch limo. Of course, the PFC did, no questions asked, and he did a damned fine job of it, too. So fine, in fact, that the bratty General's son (that would be moi ;)) asked him to do it again. And again. And again. And again. We spent a whole afternoon going down Lombard Street, driving around to the top and doing it again. ;D
-
Had time to watch last night's LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT. It was a below average episode, I thought, with an uninteresting murder plot and a brainwashing subplot that just didn't hook me at all. Usually, I find this show compelling, but last night's episode was way below par.
-
JRand...you don't SQUEEZE the clams...you startle them...and the juice comes immediately afterward....
:D
;D
Another opening night tonight for Mr BK!
-
Sorry I can't dub a DVD-R for you, BK. As per your instructions, I sent WHAT IF? on to another person on the request list, so I don't have it any more. Would have been glad to do it otherwise.
-
LOL DRs RLP AND VIXMOM ;D
-
Right now, my DVD recorder is dubbing a copy of Agatha Christie's DEAD MAN'S FOLLY, the made-for-CBS version of the book starring Peter Ustinov. The TV Poirots that Ustinov made were never as good as his feature films with TV quality production values and casts of less that A-list movie stars.
Still, I want to have them all on DVD so the videotape copies taped off TV can bite the dust. I got both Helen Hayes/Miss Marple TV movies on DVD and now I must try to get Ustinov's 13 at DINNER and A MURDER IN THREE ACTS. Encore Mystery Channel shows these in rotation every few months.
-
DR elmore - How are you holding up? There's a similar procedure in my future and I'm not looking forward to it.
DRGinny, I've just started drinking the awfullest solution which is cherry flavored. I've been told by one and all that I'm in for a lot of hell today!
-
Poor elmore.... i to drink that stuff for my gallbladder test.... yuck! I would almost rather drink clam juice :P
-
MattH. What kind of DVD recorder to you have? How do you edit the commercials out... do you have to pysically start and stop the machine at the commercials or does the DVD recorder automatically read some kind of signal and do it for you?
Once you record on the DVD is it permanent or can you record over it?
-
Larry - what day is your procedure - tomorrow or Wednesday?
-
Matt, I found out that this TV does the 3:2 pulldown automatically. Unfortunately it also has some (relatively minor) glitch where the sleep timer occasionally turns on by itself. I'll see if I can live with it, if not, back to the store for the second time.
-
I had no idea my mention of clam juice would provide an afternoon of entertainment here at HHW ;D You never know...
-
He then asked me to send him a copy of the Yiddish Sondheim thing. This I would like to do - so, can someone who has one of the DVDs I sent out, please copy just that number onto a DVD-R, and send it to me?
I can ask my sister's boyfriend Larry to do it. He's the one who copied the Alexis Smith song for you. He can do it very easily...if he has the time.
-
Got an e-mail from Hildy's new family:
Mike,
Sorry not to get back to you first thing this morning. I am a little slow today.
Brent loves Hildy! We had her in the car when we picked him up from his buddies. We told him that his present was in there and would he like to open it early. Of course he said yes! He got in the car and immediately had tears in his eyes. He was speechless. He was thrilled.
Hildy had a great time in the snow. She is a great dog. She even ate last night. We cheated by putting some canned food in. She hadn't eaten until last night. Thanks so much.
Pam
It made me very happy!
That's great!! Very good choice on new owners! ;D
I have a Panasonic DVD recorder which also includes a hard drive inside as well as a DVD player/recorder mechanism. So I can edit two ways. I can sit there manually and put the machine on pause when a commercial comes on and then hit pause again to restart the recording, or I can record the whole thing onto the hard drive of the recorder, fast forward to each commercial and hit start and stop and then delete and edit out commercials that way. Then, I hit one button to dub the finished product onto a DVD-R. The DVD I did for you, I just edited it manually since I was watching the show anyway.
You can record over and over again on some kinds of DVDs (DVD-RWs or DVD-RAMs) but not DVD-Rs. They are one time only recordings.
That's a strange glitch. Did your other one do that?
I've been wondering if this is something we want to buy or if we should wait a while since we still haven't (and probably won't until forced to) upgraded to HDTV
-
Well, time to go downstairs and get that dining room cleaned.
WBBL.
-
Well its 5:04 tme for me to toddle off and face the freezing cold and darkness while driving with the entire populace of Lomg Island... blech! If there's anything worse than a rush hour commute its a winter rush hour commute.....and its supposed to snow over night so I can only imagine what delights await me in the morning.....
I can tell you that if you don't have Tivo or another type of DVR, these recorders with hard drives are the next best thing and much better than a VCR for recording. Of course, if you only do occasional recording, they wouldn't be worth it, but if you record more than occasionally, the quality and convenience of instant commercial skip (three presses of the commercial skip button and you're back with the show you recorded) is very nice.
These machines have also become much more attractive price wise. The machine I have is more than $200 cheaper than it was when I bought it (with added features and a bigger hard drive).
-
I'm here -- I've just had nothing interesting to say.
Glad to hear the show went well. Wishing Mr. Haines (one of my favorite singers) broken legs!
-
It is term-paper season for DR Sandra. Most days she doesn't even come near the internet.
-
Blech. Cold and snowing here in Baltimore. We do have delicious crabcakes, however.
DR Elmore, good luck on your procedure. Fun times, huh?
Rodzinski, Danise, Jennifer--good health vibes to all of you. Sorry to learn that you've not been well.
Break a leg, BK, tonight.
But not your balloons.
-
The best fish I ever had was when DR MusicGuy made salmon and when he made lobster bisque.
-
I have the back door open to let in the nice cool air, and the pigeons keep sauntering in the house.
-
Larry - what day is your procedure - tomorrow or Wednesday?
Tomorrow, at 12:30.
-
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Vibes for DR Elmore. I haven't had the pleasure of such a test yet. But my much older sister says that the test isn't as bad as the prep is.
-
Yes, the prep is worse than the test, IMHO. I had one this year and drinking that chalky liquid is difficult, and then living by the toilet for a few hours and eating nothing but liquids and no colored things like grape juice or red jello is also tiresome.
More later.
-
P.S. Mr. Tom of Oz, thanks ;D
-
My Grandmother's Scalloped Oysters
1 pint Fresh Oysters
16 saltine Crackers crushed
1/2 cup Butter
Salt and Pepper
approximately 2 cups Milk
Grease 2 qt Casserole with butter-crumble (not too fine) an inch of crackers - Sprinkle with pepper. Add oysters and oyster liquor (the juice that comes with the oysters) - season with salt and pepper - Pour melted butter. Reserve 2 tablespoon for top. Cover with another inch of cracker crumbs pour rest of butter on top. Pour milk into the mixture around edge - give time to absorb the milk allowing it to come within ½ " of top. Place in cold place for at least 2 hours then let stand at room temp about 20 minutes before baking. 30-45 minutes @ 350 degrees
-
I love fish and seafood of all kinds - yes, even sushi and sashimi and eat it often.
-
Good health vibes to DR Elmore, DR Jennifer, DR Danise, DR Ron....oh good heavens, GOOD HEALTH VIBES TO EVERYONE!!
-
Break a leg BK and GUY
-
Good vibes to DR Elmore. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
Cillaliz, you and I should have been hittin' the sushi places together!
-
I'm so far away from the tastes of a few other Hainsies it seems.
Polar Express: No heart and soul. The "Eyes" really were annoying. All clever CG but no impact on me!
My favourite of the new gernation type animations is still "Monsters Inc" with its inventive story line.
Madagascar: the penguins were fine - not much else that wasn't laboured!
Shark Tale: Story was just not good enough.
War Of The Worlds: an effects laden nothing (In fact much of it seemed quite silly!). I much prefer the "Audio" take on the Wells story by Jeff Wayne and friends.
But then I don't like E.T. either.
On the other hand "A.I." almost works.
LOTR still towers above so much.
-
We were ridiculously busy at work today, so I didn't have a chance to post.
Gypsy of the Year was fun. Nothing spectacular, but fun. Makes me miss acting.
That's all for now.
-
I'd say your tastes are not far from mine, Tomovoz.
-
Good health vibes to DR Elmore, DR Jennifer, DR Danise, DR Ron....oh good heavens, GOOD HEALTH VIBES TO EVERYONE!!
Yeah, what a bunch we are. HHW is a wonderful site. But it's making everybody SICK!!!! ;)
-
The local satellite companies charge even more than the cable guys do, and from what some of neighbors (who have satellite) say.. the system is constantly "going down " when it snows or rains or is excessively windy.....
HAVE YOU BEEN READING MY POSTS! ;D
-
Just watched most of the film "99 and 44/100 per cent Dead" on the Fox movie channel in fine letterbox. Great comic-book credits with cool Mancini opening tune. It's one of those incoherent 70s curiosities I seem to enjoy to some degree. Somewhere between dark comedy and straight Bond meets Dirty Harry kind of mishmash directed by Frankenheimer. Richard Harris as an unlikely heartthrob. Bradford Dillman channeling Jerry Lewis. Plot gone AWOL about a third of the way in (or 33 and 33/100 of the way in). Kooky.
Coming on again in a couple hours for those who missed it.
-
Speaking of snow, we are supposed to get 3-6 inches tonight.
-
DR Jennifer - If you purchase canned minced clams, they're chopped up pretty fine.
My mother, and I in turn, made great clam dip.
-
DR MBarnum - That mom's story brought tears to my eyes!
I was just about to post that. ;D
-
Jennifer two of the side effects are dizziness & malaise (a general feeling of worry, discontent, or dissatisfaction, often resulting in lethargy).
That could, and the fact you have been so sick, explain why you feel drowsy. I hate how I feel when I take antibiotics.
-
I just ate a humongous amount of Chinese food while watching two episodes of THE LORETTA YOUNG SHOW.
Now I feel sick :P
-
I am also very sleepy.
-
elmore good vibes tomorrow, and tonight. God that drink is horrible. I lost most of mine just as I was finishing it.
-
Bruce I hope you evening went well.
'night.
-
Clam dip.
The curtain is about to go up on the Sondheim show in San Francisco. Wonder what the members of the audience are thinking as they peruse their programs?
Enjoyed ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT and KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL tonight....I think I will watch the rebroadcast of TRIANGLE part one on SCI FI.
-
Good vibes to DR ELMORE.
-
Someone just posted a provocative (but possibly amusing to some) casting idea on All That Chat:
RITA MORENO
starring in the National Company of
CHITA RIVERA: THE DANCER'S LIFE
-
Good procedure vibes to DR Elmore tomorrow.
-
Continued good health vibes to Rodzinski and to Danise.
And to those with the cold or flu, vibes for quick recoveries.
-
Good show vibes to BK.

Sorry I haven't been posting much but during the day I have not been around. I'm not at work so I don't have any computer. I am (we are) volunteering for two weeks at Actor's Equity. It's my regular December gig where we put together gift baskets for people with AIDS. I'm there from 10-4 every day. This year we are making 2,884 bags and approximately 1,000 of those bags have to be ready for pick up by the receiving organization or delivery by the Project. It's gratifying, fulfilling but also exhausting. If any of the lurking NY Hainsies or Kimlets have some free time and want to drop by and help out (I know that Jason and Rodzinski and TPunk and Joy are all working during the day) please just drop over to 165 W. 46th Street where Equity is located. Come to the Second Floor (either by stair or by elevator) and tell the person at the front desk that you are there to help with the baskets. You will be shown back to the work area. Any amount of time is appreciated and you don't have to belong to Equity to help. I'm there at 10 but the group work doesn't start until 11am. So drop by anytime from 11-4 and lend a hand if you are able. If you do drop by introduce yourself as a lurker or a Hainsie/Kimlet ;D. If you're a lurker you don't know what I look like because you don't see my picture (if you're not registered) but if you know what I look like, I'm the one running around lifting boxes and telling other people what to do.
I'll try to post tomorrow but I have a doctor appointment at 8am (a final check up with my dermatoligist about a pre-cancerous mark removed earlier this year) then I'll be at Equity and then I come home to dinner and then off to A Touch of the Poet. It better be a good production or I may fall asleep in the middle of the show. I'm only going because it's part of my Roundabout subscription and there are no other good dates for an exchange.
Later, gaters.
-
Oops, I meant good show vibes to Mr. Haines.
-
Ben - Please try not to fall asleep on Touch of the Poet. Skip's and my dear friend John Horton is in the last act of the play and I have it on good authority that he is wonderful in it.
-
Can I time my 777th post to be on page 7, I wonder pointlessly.
-
DR Rodzinski: I must've dropped my Playbill at Gypsy of the Year today... Do you guys have any at the office? If so, would you grab one for me? Thanks!!
-
Watched about a half hour of the DEAD MAN'S FOLLY DVD I had burned for myself.
I had forgotten that Nicolette Sheridan was in this. Not much of an actress but very beautiful.
-
Cillaliz, you and I should have been hittin' the sushi places together!
We'll just have to plan on it next time we get together
-
Watched LAS VEGAS tonight for the first time this season. It always looks very good in high definition. Naturally, NBC forgot to pull the master switch and the program never made it to high def tonight. Saw a windowboxed version of the show in standard definition. Nice little mystery concerning a poker tournament, too, and Dean Cain who is looking very good as he inches toward middle age was the guest star.
But I wish the network had been on the ball. For once, I couldn't blame the local engineer. I saw the local channel flipping back and forth and getting the same image with each flip of the switch.
-
Speaking of snow, we are supposed to get 3-6 inches tonight.
we had a record of 9 below zero last night and a little snow today. It doesn't usually get like this until January. Oh my, the wind chill is something like 25 below zero. Time to stay inside. Oh joy tomorrow the Highs will be in the single digits. Actually I still love it. I look ridiculous when I go out, but I enjoy it
-
And CSI: MIAMI was a rerun, too, of its season premiere, but as it is my favorite high def show, I opted to watch it instead of the MEDIUM rerun which was playing on NBC (in high def, BTW).
-
Got the notice late this afternoon that my Amazon order had shipped, but since the notice was late, I won't be expecting the package to get here until Thursday. That should set me up fine for the weekend.
-
And my moviegoing pal called today to confirm going to RENT tomorrow, so I should have seen it by late afternoon.
-
Good wishes for Elmore's procedure tomorrow.
Good health wishes for all who need them.
-
I thought ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT was sort of strained tonight and not very funny (or witty which I think is its stronger suit).
But KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL was very funny. It's a show I'm definitely going to miss once Fox takes it off the air.

Heading downstairs now for bed.
Good night, all!
-
Sure enuff, after sending the Delaware Valley into a panic with their winter storm warnings, the local news programs are now saying that we will only be getting one to two inches of snow. Either way would be fine by me--I'm on vacation this week and I will be sleeping in.
-
TOD:
I Like oysters, lobsters, too
I like my tasty butter fish, Foo
When I come home late at night
I get my favorite dish - fish!

Back from a very long day and must now write notes, try to get three hours of sleep and then be on my way back home where I belong.
