DR Danise - Thank you for your sharing your day - and your emotions - with us.  You have nothing to feel bad about, absolutely nothing.  I hope that once you're back down in Florida, that you'll not only be able to get a full day's rest, but, as DR td mentioned, I hope you do something fun for yourself.

Loving the CBS Tuesday night lineup!

If only ELI STONE came on CBS! Then I wouldn't have to change channels.

Eggs-actly.

I saw Most Happy Fella done very poorly at Miami University many, many years ago.

As for The Topic of the Day...

DITTO

;)

*Although... There is one young actress here in NYC who constantly brings in one of the songs from the movie version of Guys & Dolls.  I would have to put that one on my "LLL" ("Lesser Loesser List").  ;)

...I think my affection for the show owes a lot as well to Mr BK, since it was his idea to pair me up with Liz Callaway to do a recording of Loesser songs....

I remember how thrilling it was to receive a copy of that CD in the mail from DR Elmore.  One of my favorites is "What're You Doing New Year's Eve?"

It's amazing, isn't it, these Loesser song choices.  He was one of the all-time greats - the Loesser/Callaway idea was mine, and what a pairing it turned out to be - every song on that album is a gem, and the fact that it was my first album for Varese, my first multi-track session, my first mix - it came out incredibly well.  As to Liz herself, I think it's one of the greatest debut albums ever.

I've only heard the Yap recording twice - I just didn't cotton to it.  I like parts of the London cast recording (issued only as a highlights album), but the OBC cannot and will not ever be replaced, even though one wishes they could have done a couple of retakes, orchestra-wise.

On this day many years ago, I actually slipped on a banana peel.  I laughed so hard at the idea of living a cliche! :D  I may try to experince another cliche/movie/vaudeville bit.

And some more Prop 8 news...

Boycott Called: Musical Theatre's Artistic Director Supported Prop 8

I got her e-mail moments after it was sent.  There's been a lot of interesting response from the people on her list, including Shaiman's, Sam Harris, and an interesting contrary response from writer Mark Saltzman.

DR DtM - there are at least 10 sale code words - so you can order more than once if you like.  I have used three of them so far....

That's true.  I should start getting my orders in since shipments from DeepDiscount sometimes take forever.

Aren't we fortunate that Columbia recorded almost the entirety of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA! Imagine if they had only done a record like STREET SCENE (or Capitol's FOLLIES) with so much of the score missing?

After I sent in my first DDD order, and even with the discount it was almost $150, I decided I'd better take a deep breath. I'm not sure I'll order anything else.

While I was still waking up this morning, I thought I heard some familiar music coming from the radio - well, on WQXR.  Well, as the proverbial fog lifted, I realized I was hearing part of Charles Ives's "Concord Sonata".  And it turned out it was being played live by a pal of mine, Jeremy Denk.  -Who happens to be making his Carnegie Hall/Zankel Hall solo recital debut tonight.  -And, yes, I will be in the audience for it too.

He'll be playing the Ives tonight, and pairing it with Beethoven's "Hammerklavier" sonata.  He's been on tour with this program over the past few weeks, and his Zankel Hall debut tonight is his "closing night".  Should be a wonderful evening in many respects.

Some Brel for Armistice Day:
Ay, Marieke, Marieke
The Flanders sun burns the sky
Since you are gone
Ay, Marieke, Marieke
In Flanders field the poppies die
Since you are gone
Zonder liefde, warme liefde
Waait de wind de stomme wind
Zonder leifde, warme liefde
Weent de zee de grijze zee
Zonder liefde, warme leifde
Lijdt het licht het donk're licht
En schuurt het zand o ver mijn land
Mijn platte land mijn Vlanderland
Ay, Marieke, Marieke
The stars look down, so soon, so soon
The day is done
Ay, Marieke, Marieke
The Flanders moon won't light your way
The day is done
Zonder liefde, warme liefde
Waait de wind c'est fini
Zonder liefde, warme liefde
Weent de zee déjà fini
Zonder liefde, warme liefde
Lidjt het licht tout est fini
En schuurt het zand over mijn land
Mijn platte land mijn Vlanderland
Ay, Marieke, Marieke
The bells have rung, the echoes sound
The day is gone
Ay, Marieke, Marieke
In Flanders field the echoes sound
The day is gone
Zonder liefde, warme liefde
Lacht duivel de zwarte duivel
Zonder liefde, warme liefde
Brandt mijn hart mijn oude hart
Zonder lifde, warme liefde
Sterft de zomer de droeve zomer
En schuurt het zand over mijn land
Mijn platte land mijn Vlanderland
Ay, Marieke, Marieke
Come back again, come back again
The day is gone
Ay, Marieke, Marieke
Your love alone, your love alone
The day is gone
Ay, Marieke, Marieke
Come back again, come back again
The day is gone
Ay, Marieke, Marieke
Your love alone, your love alone
The day is gone, the day is gone, the day is gone

Tree people are gone.  How thoughtful to wake up the neighborhood and as soon as they've done that and people can't go back to sleep, they leave.

Out of curiosity, esteemed BK, what kind of pit does the Alex Theater have these days?  Back when I worked there, in my first serious post-college job when it was a terribly run-down movie theater, there was no pit that I remember (unless they had something underneath the stage, which I don't remember being there), and the stage itself isn't remarkably deep.  So, where would they put an orchestra, other than on the stage, and if they did that, where would they put the actors?

The Alex was designed to be a movie theater - anything involving the stage was an afterthought (although theater designers at least kept the thought in mind back in those days).

This isn't to say that, in it's current usage as a total venue for film, stage, and concerts, the sound quality shouldn't be given the utmost care (which clearly last night's performance lacked).  But the question remains: where do you put the danged orchestra?

And here is Mr. Eckern's apology - and a perfect example of why the duplicitous campaign for the yes vote squeaked through.  I do believe this will get thrown out of court because if they don't the constitution is meaningless.

They have a decent-sized pit, if I'm remembering correctly, but I may be confusing it with the El Portal.  At these MTG things, the band is always on stage.

You have very good taste, DR Jane; I think that MIRACLE is my favorite Sturges film; it's right up there with PALM BEACH STORY and, now, SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS.
