and for Mike Barnum:
The Hindu Calendar has various systems of naming the months. The months in the lunar calendar are:

Chaitra
Vaishaakha
Jyaishtha
Aashaadha
Shraavana
Bhaadrapada
Aashvayuja
Kaartika
Maargashiirsha
Pausha
Maagha
Phaalguna
These are also the names used in the Indian national calendar for the newly redefined months.

The names in the solar calendar are just the names of the zodiac sign in which the sun travels. They are

Mesha
Vrishabha
Mithuna
Kataka
Simha
Kanyaa
Tulaa
Vrishcika
Dhanus
Makara
Kumbha
Miina

The old Icelandic calendar is not in official use anymore, but some Icelandic holidays and annual feasts are still calculated from it. It has 12 months, broken down into two groups of six often termed "winter months" and "summer months". The calendar is peculiar in that the months always start on the same weekday rather than on the same date. Hence Ţorri always starts on a Friday sometime between January 19 and January 25 (Old style: January 9 to January 15) , Góa always starts on a Sunday between February 18 and February 24 (Old style: February 8 to February 14).

Skammdegi ("Short days")
Gormánuđur (mid October - mid November, "slaughter month" or "Gór's month")
Ýlir (mid November - mid December, "Yule month")
Mörsugur (mid December - mid January, "fat sucking month")
Ţorri (mid January - mid February, "frozen snow month")
Góa (mid February - mid March, "Góa's month, see Nór")
Einmánuđur (mid March - mid April, "lone" or "single month")
Náttleysi ("Nightless days")
Harpa (mid April - mid May, Harpa is a female name, probably a forgotten goddess, first day of Harpa is celebrated as Sumardagurinn fyrsti - first day of summer)
Skerpla (mid May - mid June, another forgotten goddess)
Sólmánuđur (mid June - mid July, "sun month")
Heyannir (mid July - mid August, "hay business month")
Tvímánuđur (mid August - mid September, "two" or "second month")
Haustmánuđur (mid September - mid October, "autumn month")

In honor of former DR Panni's  most recent success....

Historically Hungary used a 12-month calendar that appears to have been zodiacal in nature[6] but eventually came to correspond to the Gregorian months as shown below[7]:

Boldogasszony hava (January, ‘month of the happy/blessed lady’)
Böjtelő hava (February, ‘month of early fasting/Lent’ or ‘month before fasting/Lent’)
Böjtmás hava (March, ‘second month of fasting/Lent’)
Szent György hava (April, ‘St. George’s month)
Pünkösd hava (May, ‘Pentecost month’)
Szent Iván hava (June, ‘St. Ivan’s month’)
Szent Jakab hava (July, ‘St. James’ month’)
Kisasszony hava (August, ‘month of the young lady [Blessed Virgin]’)
Szent Mihály hava (September, ‘St. Michael’s month’)
Mindszent hava (October, ‘all saints month’)
Szent András hava (November, ‘St. Andrew’s month’)
Karácsony hava (December, ‘month of Yule/Christmas’)

Hmmmmmmmm......I watched Boys in the Band last weekend, too.  I read the play many times, but never saw it performed.  I remember laughing a lot at the play, and I purloined a line or two for use in real life.

Saw the PREVIEW for the movie, but never saw the real thing until this weekend.  I enjoyed the performances and a couple of the interviews and hearing all about the original play.  I think one of those books - Broadway Babylon or Second Act Trouble - had a chapter about the show and the lives of the actors, so I knew something about how things had gone since 1970....

Yes, DR JOSE.....my first thought was to ask friend and torch bearer Baayork about the Seal fiasco.  Perhaps MR BK can talk to her when he is in the Big Apple next week.

And we heard the same Maharis rumors in the mid 60's when he left the show.

By the third season, the MMC had been trimmed to only one half hour.  On the ANNETTE treasures DVD we get two full episodes....the first one that introduced the series, and the one broadcast with the finale.

I liked the first one, especially seeing Karen and Cubby in a dance routine.  Those kids were really good.  And a dance routine with Bobby, Sharon, and Lonnie....another terrific dance trio!

The finale was shown on a Friday which was of course Talent Round Up Day.....but somebody dropped the ball here.  It was Janey & Linda Fallis.  The younger sister sang like Alfalfa and the older sister was a surprisingly graceless dancer....whew!  Check it out at your own risk - this is only part of the torture:

Hebrew Calendar
The Hebrew calendar has 12 or 13 months.

Nisan, 30 days ניסן
Iyyar, 29 days אייר
Sivan, 30 days סיון
Tammuz, 29 days תמוז
Av, 30 days אב
Elul, 29 days אלול
Tishri, 30 days תשרי
Heshvan, 29/30 days חשון
Kislev, 29/30 days כסלו
Tevet, 29 days טבת
Shevat, 30 days שבת
Adar 1, 30 days, intercalary month אדר א
Adar 2, 29 days אדר ב
Adar 1 is only added 7 times in 19 years. In ordinary years, Adar 2 is simply called Adar.

Thank you, DR Vixmom!  I am going to have to print a copy of this post and keep it handy for the next time I tackle a Sunday New York Times Crossword puzzle.

And the word of the day is: GUTTLE!

Character in Two for the Seesaw or Composer of Light In the Piazza?

der Brucer

Also the name of the little known sixth daughter of Tevye and Golde who was hidden away from Anatevka society because of her bizarre eating disorder.

Monday morning greetings!  I drove to work today in snow flurries, but comforted myself with the realization that my retirement party is 4 weeks from today.

TOD - movie:  Sunday, Bloody Sunday.  I told my then just-out boyfriend to watch the Glenda Jackson character very carefully.

Good morning, all! I have a morning crammed with phone calls and a trip to the pharmacist. In the afternoon, I've got physical therapy, a bt of time with Frank Loesser, and a trip to Toyland and the Men's Chorus rehearsal. That's enough.

DR FJL, I hope you got my PM from last night.  Also, the "orginal authors" of PAL JOEY had no gay characters except for a line to Joey  "stay way from the drummer, he's still a kid," so I have no idea what's been done to the libretto.

TOD:
Plays: Torch Song Trilogy (Fierstein), T-Shirts (Robert Patrick), Entertaining Mr Sloane, Loot, What The Butler Saw (Joe Orton), Take Me Out
Movies: My Beautiful Laundrette, Beautiful Thing, Brokeback Mountain, Longtime Companion
TV: Tales of the City, and its sequels, Angels In America, which I preferred to the Broadway production)
Books: A Single Man (Isherwood), Chamber Music (Grumbach)

Least Favorite:
  Plays: The Falsettos Musicals
  Movies: Cruising

What the hell is it with all these ticket agencies these days? I just bought 2 tickets to BURY THE DEAD and the Transport Group's site says they're $38 each. Well, each ticket has from the agency a $3.55 additional charge so why the hell don't they tell you the goddam tickets are $41.55 each? And then they want you to add a donation as well? Give my back my $7.10 and I'll consider it!

I get this same sudden additional charge crap now for NYMF, the Fringe Festival, etc.

Kenneth Nelson (Michael)
Leonard Frey (Harold)
Frederick Combs (Donald)
Keith Prentice (Larry)
Robert Le Tourneaux (Cowboy)

Cliff Gorman passed away due to liver cancer

and Reuben Greene (Bernard) Gave up acting and "disappeared" if he is still alive he will be 70 years old next week. He made one more in 1976 and that was it.

elmore -  The new book's plot twists and turns about the gay subplot are quite compelling, even effectively creepy, dramatic  and disturbing - it just doesn't ultimately seem like the characters the original authors intended.  Heck, some might even say this book is "better written" than O'Hara's for today's audience - it seemed to me like a different point of view and I hope at the very least that the "old" version can still be done to remind people what O'Hara, Rodgers & Hart intended.
