Question for BK:

What exactly do you mean by the "bottom" when it comes to recorded music?

Sorry to hear about your proposed Montreal trip being a non event.

Another question for BK re: TabAtha.

Are you sure that was Arnold Soboloff as the taxi driver?

I don't think it looks or sounds like him. I always pictured the man wearing glasses (like the shot of Tabatha getting in the taxi where he is also wearing a cap) and being a lot thinner in the face. Whenever I saw him acting or in photos he was always wearing those glasses.

Here is a photo of him

Good morning, all!  DRGinny, safe trip.

DRMichaelShayne,  I had forgotten that John Reardon did several of Ben's recordings!  I try to suppress all memories of working with Ben and concentrate on what a charming man he was away frm the studio.  I didn't do any of the albums John was on.  I had also forgotten that he sang in the premiere of Bernstein's SONGFEST, the first stereo recording of THE RAKE'S PROGRESS with Stravinsky conducting, and a wonderful recording of Menotti's THE OLD MAID AND THE THIEF, which needs to appear on CD.

John and Ron Raines played two of Colette's three husbands in the tryout of Harvey & Tom's COLETTE (long before it became COLETTE COLLAGE).  Since their voices are so similar, I wonder if that wasn't a bit confusing to the audience.

Today is another DARLING OF THE DAY marathon, so I'm off to work.

No nothing in anything. Don't know what I'll do tonight after work. I'm having a prideful dinner with friends tomorrow evening. We get together at Cafe Loup every year (the Saturday evening before Pride Sunday) and have dinner and catch up and then walk over to Washington Square Park and look at the Empire State Building awash in Lavender light. The lights are flicked off at midnight and then we wander to our various homes. The Pride March takes place on Sunday but it's supposed to be a VERY hot day. I know that means little to our Arizona pals but 95 with high humidity makes it hard to sit on the corner and watch prideful gay men and lesbians cavort down Fifth Avenue and it makes it even harder to consider cavorting with them. I used to march proudly with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS but they have not walked for the past few years. If I did end up walking it would probably be with a friend from the Gay Mens Chorus. But, it's easier to just walk over to 16th Street and Fifth Avenue and plop down to see the whole thing from my corner. I think I will avoid the "festival" which is a sad excuse for a street fair, no different from any other New York City street fair except it has rainbow banners, gay pride slogans, men (and some women) without shirts and the same general boring quality that all New York street fairs now possess.

Anyway, I shall now go to AccuRadio.com to see what the Broadway channel is playing.

I will be back later to see if we can get a sneak peek at Kritzerland Records.

Bye.

Safe travel vibes to Rodzinski and Ginny!

First, while I don't post alot, I really like hanging out.  Not much time during the day due to the job thing and evenings too full of other stuff but I do check in when I can.  You are a swell bunch of people and this site provides a much needed diversion.

DVD = The last disk of the 3rd season of Six Feet Under.  Finished the season last night.  Love that show.

CD =  Jerry Springer: The Opera OCR.  Great show if you have not heard it

Later.......  and thanks to all for being here and thanks to  BK for providing the opportunity.

       The New Moon

DVD:  T've got AMELIE and two other Netflix pix sitting here, plus a lot of opera I want to watch if I find the time:  some Offenbach, LOVE FOR THREE  ORANGES, and a couple of BBC items from the Glyndebourne Festival

VCR:  I'm still awaiting DRJed's video

Topic of the Day - All CDs...

Whilst I was puttering around the house - well, just around my room at least - I was listening to Miss Annette Funicello sings of boys, surfing, boys, Hawaii, boys, young love, boys... Thank you, DR JRand!  -It was just what I needed after some of the "irritations" I had to deal with yesterday.

I know I listened to a few more CDs this past week, but they're not coming to mind right, and since I'm no where near the shelf that I keep my CDs on right now...

Maybe as I go through the day, other titles will come to mind.

Good Morning, Boys and Girls!

I used to love watching "FLIPPANT," but then I always id like dolphins.  I liked Brian Kelly and Luke Halpin too.

DVD--"Dirty Shame"  Try as you might, you can never plan on just how far a John Waters film will go-- or who he;ll get to do it.  He's kind of like the Ben Bagley of midnight movies.

CD-- "High Society" (the Broadway re-do).  I've got "Sherry" ready to go, along with the Original Broadway Cast of "Flower Drum SOng"-- the original verson,, NOT the re-do.  I've listened to "High Society" before and wasn't terribly impressed, although I like much of the cast.  We'll see this time.

I'll check out the new site as soon as I can.

Ben, have fun at the parade (heat or no heat).  We now have our Pride celebration in April. because 114 is too miserable in which to march or celebrate.

"They call him Flippant, Flippant,
faster than lightinng.
No one you see
is smarter than he..."

Now, to the tenor!  I think DRMBarnum would like Brandon Jovanovich (he's on the right) in this scene from Carlisle Floyd's opera SUSANNAH, an adaptation of the Apocryphal story of Susannah and the Elders transferred to Tennessee (?) country.

Good morning all.  I have a had a dreadful few days.  My car is in the shop as the transmission decided to give up the ghost while it was having its brakes repaired.  i spuppose I cannot really complain as the car is 10 years old and it does have  175,000 miles on it, but still  I have been without a car since Saturday and that is a baaaad thing on he Island of Long.

On top of that this is on e oif the three busiest weeks in the real estate year for this area, the week between school letting out and the  4th of Juky holiday when everyone who has beenin contract to sell and buy wants to close on their loans.

It has been utter chaos.

So I have not caught up, and most likely will ot get an opportunityu to this  day either (perhaps this eveing)

I have missed you all and will try to sneak some peeks at what has been going on.

The best of vibes to OzDerek ... DRRLP - OUCH!!!  And walk vibes to DRGEORGE!

What great posts we have.  DRJOSE I am glad you are enjoying Miss Annette singing all about MOSTLY boys.  I am wondering what DR ELMORE thinks of her efforts at Mr Victor Herbert's BABES?  Or maybe I don't want to know.

THE SITE IS GOING UP TODAY!!!  THE KRITZERLAND SITE IS GOING UP TODAY!!!  In case you missed the news!  I have been saving my pennies to get the Guy Haines CD.  As to the voice I think Mr Guy Haines resembles.  I think that Mr Guy Haines and Mr George Guetary have VERY similar voices.  Mr Guetary's version of "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise" in AN AMERICAN IN PARIS is one of my ALL TIME favorite movie songs - and the staging with the lighted stairway is so lovely - would love to hear Mr Haines wrap his dulcet tones around that song....and with an accent!

Does the TABITHA series theme song have lyrics?

DR MS - is Arnold on the left or right in that photo?

And my Bollywood movie for the weekend is:

ELAAN starring Arjun Rampal, Lara Dutta, and John Abraham!

Started watching it last night...wasn't expectingt to enjoy it very much, but it is actually a lot of fun...typical action flick using the standard action cliches that all the current action films (Indian and American made) use...but some great music and song numbers!

I have much catching up to do, a couple of days worth at least, but I don't have the time right now to do it.  Drat.

At least I survived yesterday, although I was worried at times about managing that.  Der Brucer and I were on ladsitting duty again, taking the grandlads to their summer camps.  The day started well enough.  After dropping Alex off at his farming camp at the arboritum, we putzed for a while with William, watching the bullfrogs in the drifty river outside the main exhibit hall.  That was particularly interesting, since a female bullfrog and a male bullfrog were mating, and we actually got to watch them doing the deed!

My problems began when we took William to his soccer camp.  It was just a ninty-minute class, but my allergies began to kick in almost immediately when we arrived, a giant congestion and dripping from the nasal passages.  Still, I wasn't worried.

After the class, William, der B and I headed back to the park area where the arboritum is located for lunch.  Sandwiches and Pepsi.  It was there that the allergies got worse, and got into my eyes of all places.  I'm not used to that happening.  I excused myself to the restroom, and washed my face, as that usually helps clear away the pollens, but it didn't help at all.  While my eyes were swelling shut, scratchy and hurting, I managed to tell der B what was happening, and that I wanted to get out of the area.

He reacted quickly, piling us all back into the car and driving us to a local drug store, where he bought me eye drops, antihistimines, and a box of Kleenex.  It was an interesting ride, as I was keeping my eyes shut the entire way while William, not understanding that I couldn't see all of a sudden, kept asking me to play certain songs on the CD player.

Fortunately, the eye drops were an instant success, and the antihistimines kicked in not too long after.  I'm still feeling loopy from the antihistimes, which is going to make work today more fun that usual.

And that is the state of the art.

Most likely I will be largely E&T this weekend as we madly rehearse and then open our Bacharach show tonight.  (On top of which, I have *another* gig tonight *before* the Bacharach show--oy!).

BK, I seriously doubt you got anything from Zach, as we took him to the doctor on Wednesday as a precaution and:  he isn't sick.  (No fever, no throat distress.  He evidently just had a moment where he coughed up the milk and water he had just drunk).

Elmore:  Amelie is a very charming film (IMHO) if you get yourself in the right, quirky frame of mind (you reside in that frame, don't you? ;) ).  Have you seen City of Lost Children by the same director?  Hilarious Ron Perlman commentary on that one, worth the price of admission.

Been thinking a lot about LOST IN THE STARS these last few days, and I woke up this morning and realized that I have the script for the musical in a book of famous plays of the 1940s. I immediately got it out and read it.

Good lord, why did the screenwriter change the end of the story where the two fathers who had lost sons come together in a new beginning, perhaps uniting because of their shared loss rather than being separated by their political differences? It certainly gives the tragic nature of the story a little ray of sunshine at the end of a very sad story.

Anyway, today I am going to fish out that cast recording and listen to the whole thing again.

LOL Rodzinski!
There were a lot of "naked" movies made in Florida in the 50s and 60s...I have recently bought the DVDs of many of them...the horror films as well....my favorite so far is GOLDILOCKS AND THE 3 BARES! Most of the cast of Herschel Gordon Lewis' BLOOD FEAST is naked in that film! LOL!

BLAZE STARR GOES NUDIST is my second fave! What a gal!

I beleive that June Wilkinson's outre film MACUMBA LOVE was also made in Flaming EastmanColor....as opposed to the more sedate regular EastmanColor - Print by Technicolor of BEDEVILLED!

Ain't it the Truth!

Which reminds me, I guess I need to finish watching my DVD double feature of THE DEFILERS and SCUM OF THE EARTH...part of my "1960s films made in Florida" collection!

I stand corrected.

Question for BK:

What exactly do you mean by the "bottom" when it comes to recorded music?

Low end.  The low end frequencies.  Whether people realize it's there consciously, it's like comfort - when it's present and right it gives you a safe feeling, at least it does me.  If it's missing, I always feel like at any moment you could just fall into a bottomless abyss.  It's like having solid ground underneath your feet.

One quick word about the local announcement of next season's Broadway Lights (national touring companies) series in Charlotte: it is a BUM season by any definition of the word.

The two big draws (both huge Broadway flops): LITTLE WOMEN and BOMBAY DREAMS.

Wow, we sure see things differently.  I would love to have those shows tour here.  I think just to have any of the big shows from the past season is lucky.  But those are definitely two i'd like to see.

Just think what you could be getting.

Here is a photo of him
(http://www.playbill.com/images/photos/whisltelead.jpg)

Am I sure?  Of course.  We spent quite a bit of time together in San Fran when he was doing his scene.  And I went backstage to visit him when he was doing Peter Pan on Broadway with Sandy Duncan.

Glad to hear it went well.  I haven't gotten sick from an airplane ride in years, but who knows.  I'm FIGHTING.

Kritzerland will be up and running shortly.  However, there is one thing we were unable to deal with today, and that thing will be dealt with on Sunday and Monday - it has to do with how complex paypal is set up to deal with shipping - we were able to do everything except International shipping rates - apparently it can be done but it's very complicated and my designer can't get to it until Sunday.  So, I would ask our overseas dear readers to wait until Monday to order - everyone here in the States can preorder immediately.

Yes, Jennifer, we do indeed have WIDELY divergent tastes in musicals. Yes, we could have had the tour of WICKED if Charlotte were a big enough market. Sad to say, it will be the following tour season before we see WICKED here. I suspect it will run for two weeks, just like HAIRSPRAY is doing. I will be seeing it.

For some reason, instead of continuing with ADVISE AND CONSENT, I popped in the first disc from the BROADWAY: THE MUSICAL THEATER series from PBS. I noticed it was playing this week on one of the PBS-high definition channels, but rather than watch it there, I thought I'd watch my boxed set again (which isn't high definition but is in anamorphic widescreen, a legitimate compromise.)

As I did the first time, I'm enjoying it immensely.

Right now, the plan is to have dinner here with Steve, and then head back up to Fairfax.  However, I may stay one more night.  We'll see.

The big factor is the closing of 95 at the Springfield Mixing Bowl.  They're closing the road northbound this weekend at night in order to move some "big beams" and do some other work.  The detour is actually not that bad, but the traffic back-up potential... Ugh.  Luckily, the news radio station that has the traffic reports "on the 8s" can be picked up down here, so I can give a lesson later and go - or not go from there.

Oh, I ended up having lunch with my friend, Peter.  I happened to give him a call just as he was about to leave his office, so we ended up meeting at a pizza place.  A pizza buffet place.

I didn't over-indulge, but I did indulge.  Ah, well...

And after getting on one of those big mechanical scales at the bank this morning - a lot of banks in Richmond have them in their lobby (???) - I really do need to stop indulging so much right now.  However, I can tell my body is starting to rebel a bit.  I'm filling up faster, and anything fatty gives me a headache.  So... Time get to back on the svelte train.

And after that very sobering experience, I had another one when I stepped into my storage unit.  I really dropped the ball in regards to going through my "boxes o' stuff".  There are just too many boxes in there that I should go through, and a lot of stuff to be either thrown out, donated, given away or put on E-bay.

I just know the longer I keep that 'stuff', the longer I'll be "attached" to Richmond.  So...

I have two more weeks until I head up to NYC, so...

My only...comment (certainly not a criticism :)), but in the interview with Tony Walton, when you click on the "next" or "previous" buttons, it doesn't kick you to the top of the page.  You have to scroll back up to the top to continue with the interview.  It's a very minor inconvenience, but like I said, it's not a criticism.

DR S. Woody White, I’m so sorry to hear about your allergies.  I’ve never had to deal with any and hope I never will.

My problem seems to be that I’ve turned into a kidney stone making machine.   I have to go in for that IVP test again on Monday (not fun).  I’m just hoping that I won’t have to have surgery again.  Three times in the past four years would be a bit much and I’m worried about the damage it might be doing to my kidney. I can’t keep having surgery every time I have a stone.  On the other hand, I've never really passed  one with out the surgery to break it up.   I've heard that can hurt a lot so I don't really want to do that either.  Neither choice makes me very happy.

Different subject, how do you still like your job?

It rarely gets very cold here Danise.40 degrees F in the winter - rarely below freezing and we only get a few frosty mornings.  Melbourne has a mild climate. (Not as warm as Melbourne Florida I guess). Even where I am in the hills. We have lemon and grapefruit trees growing quite successfully. Kiwi fruit farms are also in this area (On North facing slopes).
- In many ways an ideal climate as we experience the four seasons.

Well, I missed Tom Cruise debating Matt Lauer this morning.  Is that man getting totally wacko or what?  It only encourages my intention to not see WHORE OF THE WORLDS.  I had a scientologist roommate in college, and I thought he was demented; in 1965 I didn't know what the hell he was talking about.  Now that I do, I'm boggled by all these morons getting sucked into it.

I don’t understand it either, DR Elmore.  Just like I don’t understand why we have MANDATORY diversity classes/training and yet the commissioners pass something that shows our county to be anything but.

Just received the answer to Test 2.   :D

Well, I just saw my cameo appearance and I'm thrilled by it.   Thanks for including me, Dear Friend BK.  I love the shot of you at the end; you look very happy to be back in your chair.

I loved the folk from CHARLEY?  It was great to see Drew. Greg, Josh, Paul. Collette, Mary, Kristin, and Elizabeth again.  Greg and Drew were two of my housemates at Goodspeed, and Josh Grisetti is one of the funniest people I know.  Have they all been alerted to the site?

Dear BK,I think you have not enough energy to fight against germs because of being in diet and being tired.  Diet person is apt to catch a cold and to have troubles with one’s vulnerable spots/parts.  Be a good boy and rest yourself this whole weekend, and you’ll be better. You must rest up, I think.

EmergenC is a nice name. I like it!

To diet and feed a cold eat lots of watermellon.  I am amazed at how well it work, just wish I had discovered it years ago.

Good Evening!

Back from dinner.  And the walk.  Well, walks.  The walk to Peking Pavilion.  And the walk back from Peking Pavilion.  We're both a little tired from the walks, but the food was very good.  Spring Rolls, Shrimp Toast (one of the best renditions I've ever had), and Shrimp and Scallops Imperial with extra Broccoli.

We had planned to walk down to Shockoe Bottom to get dessert.  Well, at least I thought we had planned to walk down there.  *Peking Pavilion is located in Shockoe Slip.  After turning here, and turning there, Steve said, "And here's the Manchester Bridge - our walk back to the apartment."  -What about dessert?!?!?!  He had lost track during our foot tour.

It was OK.  The sun was just in the middle of setting, so the sky looked wonderful from the bridge, over the river, on the skyline, etc.  And Dave Koz was performing tonight at Fridays at Sunset at Kanawha Plaza which is at one end of the bridge, so we were serenaded on our walk back home.  The buildings provided a very clear and ambient acoustic.

-And we have ice cream and wafer cookies here anyway.

:)

Jose, I went for a walk this evening and lo and behold I came across Chocolate Bar which you had mentioned earlier when I mentioned the new location for Li-Lac. CB is just about a block north of Li-Lac on Hudson between Jane and Horatio. All that chocolate and booze (Tavern on Jane) and pastry in one easy location. The October group will be flying up and down Hudson Street.

I'm about to head over to Kritzerland to poke around. It won't be as fast for me since I'm on dial-up but I did notice that there is a dial-up option for the video feed. That's nice. Thanks for thinking of us who don't have high speed.

RE: Tom Cruise on "The Today Show"... and "The Late Show with David Letterman"... and "Access Hollywood"... and...

I swear everyone must have been provided with the same script.  Almost all the interviews have opened up with a tongue-in-cheek remark from the interviewer: "Hey, haven't seen much of you lately in the news."  ;)

:-\

And each time, Mr. Cruise's response is the same semi-modest, semi-self-deprecating reaction.

And then on "The Today Show"... You can tell the producers were telling all the on-air talent to keep talking about whenever there were a few spare moments.   And they kept replaying various clips throughout the show this morning. "Ooohhh.. Ah.."... UGH!

However, it was refreshing to hear Al Roker say that he thought Tom Cruise was being rude to Matt Lauer.  I have to agree.  Just answer the question, Tom!  Don't judge him - and everyone else - just because he has not totally investigated the history of psychiatry, the medical "implications" of ritalin, the "quackery" that is modern-day psychology, etc., etc., etc...

Of course, "The Today Show" is milking the situation for all it's worth.  Part 1 and 2 aired today - a total of about 15 minutes, if that; and Parts 3 and 4 will air on Monday.  Then "War of the Worlds" opens on Wednesday....

Oh... and in the usual TV fashion... EVERYONE has the "EXCLUSIVE" interview with the man of the hour.

Let's just hope the story stays the same until all the interviews finish airing.

;)

DR Ben - Yeah!  You found it!

My favorite chocolates there are their Salted Caramels (made with salted butter as opposed to sweet unsalted butter), and their Chipotle pepper one - a nice bit of heat with the chocolate.  I have yet to try their various drinks and libations, but I've heard they're quite good.

OH!!!

And I guess we could also head down to SoHo and hit Marie-Belle.  Their little cafe in the back... Wonderful stuff.  Three types of Hot Cocoa made to order, in either European (water-based) or American (milk-based) ways.  The Aztec is my favorite.

Then, of course, up a block and around the corner to Vosges Chocolates for a truffle or two.  But they also have chocolate drinks as well.

And then uptown to Serendipity for their amazing chocolate creation....

Very nice, and since the car isn't large, one can envelop himself in sound and be carried away. The instrumentals on the UNSUNG SONDHEIM are just wonderful for that.
