Title: THE SHIMMY SHAKE
Post by: bk on January 12, 2004, 12:05:27 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know what you're supposed to be doing and so do it, and do it with gay abandon and elan.  Can't wait to see your posts on the topic o' the day, so let's have loads of lovely posts, shall we? ::)

I'm the only one here!  Sad to be all alone at HHW (almost a Millie reference).

Anyway Bruce, I know it's not Wednesday's Ask BK Day (as does everyone else in the world) but in your first paragraph of today's column, shouldn't it be the City of Studio?  You have the Oaks of Sherman and the Angeles of Los...or are you actually being consistent in your naming of the California of Cities and I'm just a meddling Washingtonian who absolutely does not know the California of geography?

Well, it's late and I have to get up earlier than usual for a workday.  The "Service Engine Soon" light has come on in my car even though I have had EVERY recommended service on that car and I'm very up to date with the oil changes.  Either the light is just an automatic thing and just needs to be reset OR something is seriously wrong with my car...and there better NOT be something at all wrong with my car!

So, goodnight.  I'll think about today's topic of the day as I go through the day, in the morning, afternoon and evening.

Geeze, I'm trying to think if I've even heard or seen a musical that wasn't revival.  I've heard Floyd Collins and like a lot of it, but I couldn't name one song from it.  This is going to take some research.

I got really burnt out on musicals during the sing-thru craze....stuff like Miss Saigon and...yecch!  I love strong book musicals.  Get back to you on this one.

Well - I shall think about the topic of the day.  ::)

Yes DEARREADERLAURA - Holy Cross on Slauson! More stars than there are in the heavens.  And on a clear day you can see the Sony Studios which used to be MGM!  The largest memorial belongs to Mrs Frederick Brisson aka Rosalind Russell!  I think it needs a red light on the top so airplanes won't hit it!

DR GEORGE check to make sure your gas cap is secure, believe it or not, sometimes that causes the "SERVICE" light to come on!

And here it is - your Allison Hayes picture of the week:  From THE UNEARTHLY, a nice walk up the stairs!

Whew - this was some assignment!  I enjoyed the songs in "Hairspray" and the songs in "The Producers."  I like a bit of "Sweet Smell of Success" and even a ballad or two from "The Scarlet Pimpernel."

But I think my favorite score - and this is purely subjective! - of the past 10 years is "Aida."  My favorite song from the score 'Elaborate Lives' although I also like 'My Strongest Suit' and 'Every Story Is a Love Story.'

A VERY CLOSE SECOND and maybe on alternate Tuesdays, my favorite is Maury Yeston's "Titanic" with 'The Night was Alive' and 'Andrews' Vision' being the highpoints for me.

Whew!  That leaves out a LOT of shows and music, but the topic was my favorite!

Hold on just a right-rearing-darn-farnugled second.

I was promised a weekend.  The calendar said: "after Friday and before Monday = weekend fun time".  It promised me!!

I feel as though I have somehow been RIPPED OFF of my weekend.

So, in protest, I am officially changing the calendar.  Today is Sunday.  I am going in to school and work and will be demanding overtime pay and brownie suck up points.

Happy Sunday everyone!!! :d

You couldn't have picked a topic closer to my heart...

"Stop, Time" from Big moves the hell out of me every time I hear it.  There are other fine numbers from this show, such as Dancing All the Time and I Want To Go Home, but I can still feel the excitement I felt when first hearing Liz Callaway's recording.

Liz Callaway also recorded "Sailing" from A New Brain, which, I think, is an obvious choice.  Sometimes it seems like the love song of our age, and yet it contains surprisingly un-sentimental lines like "Sex is good, but I'd rather go sailing."

"I Won't Mind" from The Other Franklin - not sure if this counts, because, as far as I know, The Other Franklin was never completed and or produced.  But this is an amazing song that captures the feelings of many a childless uncle or aunt.

"Our Children" from Ragtime.  I think when future generations look back on this era, they're going to say we were very lucky to have Flaherty & Ahrens.

"Why" from Tick Tick Boom.  Now, as this song was premiered posthumously, I can't be sure it was written in the past ten years, but it didn't see the light of day.  I think the best score heard on Broadway in ages was A Class Act, but, similarly, the songwriter was long dead when it premiered.

"I Have Found" from The Royal Family.  This is a musical that hasn't been produced yet.  So maybe it only counts for the next decade.  But when you heard it in the 2002 cabaret act Finding Joy, you knew you were hearing a classic.

"A Breeze on the River" from The Full Monty is yet another depiction of feelings about a child, which seems to be a running theme of this list.

"Lay Down Your Head" from Violet is a lullaby, too.

And "A Place Called Home" from A Christmas Carol is certainly in the same mode.

"Ahead of My Time" may or may not be the name of the Peter Mills song about the gay caveman, and it may or may not have been in his Taxi Cabaret, but I think it's probably the funniest song I've heard in the past ten years.

Of course, I laughed at every song in From the Hip, the musical about the performing siamese twins.  I laughed at every song in that OTHER musical about the performing siamese twins, but the authors didn't intend me to.

Now I've listed ten, so I feel I've taken up too much space to mention "My New Philosophy" "Seasons of Love" "Notice Me Horton" "Forget About the Boy" "Along Came Bialy" "Way Back To Paradise" "What Is It About Her?" "Dancing" (from 3hree), "Still" and "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist"

Most of the CDs I've purchased over the past years are of older musicals. (Could you imagine trying to pick a favorite song from a ten-year period in the 40s, 50s or 60s?) Of contemporary musicals, I saw Urinetown in NYC; ones seen in Toronto have included Ragtime, The Full Monty, and Aida. I'm not a fan of Rent, and am not really familar with the work of La Chiusa or Jason Robert Brown. I haven't heard A New Brain, Wicked or Avenue Q. So, with this limited perspective, I have to thank JRand53 for reminding me of Titantic. Two favorites from that score: I Must Get on That Ship; and Still.

Thanks, Noel, for the Siamese twins memory jog. Two favorites from the underappreciated (IMHO) Side Show: Come Look at the  Freaks, and I Will Never Leave You.

My favorite songs from new musicals of the last ten years are songs that are a lot older than the shows, like the great Kern classics in NEVER GONNA DANCE.  I like the scores from some new shows (HAIRSPRAY, AVENUE Q, THE PRODUCERS, et. al.) but the individual songs don't seem to stand out like in classics of the past.

Good morning all. I see my friends the k-demons have been out again :)

I am busy re-printing out 2 chicken recipes that for the life of me I cannot find anywhere.  I spent an hour searching for them last night.  There are a bunch of them together somewhere (I checked my recipe binder like 3 times). Luckily I remembered their names. But I hate not being able to find stuff.

Love many songs from Side Show, including "I will never leave you".  Don't love Aida, but I was very touched when Sherie Rene Scott (sorry about the spelling) sang "Every Story is a love story".  There are a bunch from Hairspray that make me happy.  I am still slightly obsessed with "Popular" from wicked.  And there are many more I'm sure.

It will be interesting to hear DRJose's choices since he worked on many NEW shows!

"Your Daddy's Eyes" and "Wheels of a Dream" (and several others) from RAGTIME.

"Godspeed Titanic," "Barrett's Song," and (since I got to perform it and it was one of the most emotionally charged numbers I've ever done) "The Blame," all from TITANIC.

"Everybody Dance" from STEEL PIER

"You Walk with Me" from THE FULL MONTY

"At the Fountain" in SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS

"Popular" and "Defying Gravity" among others in WICKED.

And there are plenty of others, but these will do for a start.

URINETOWN'S "Run, Freedom, Run" caught my ear.
"For Good" from WICKED is quickly becoming a favorite.
"The Night was Alive" from TITANIC
"Endless Night" and "He Lives in You" from THE LION KING
"Back to Before" from RAGTIME
"Elaborate Live" from AIDA
"Total Eclipse of the Heart" which, shouldn't count, but, sure does sound good on DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES.
"The Internet is for Porn" AVENUE Q
I'm with Noel on "I Won't Mind" from THE OTHER FRANKLIN, if DR Tomovoz doesn't have it, he needs it too. . .
"The Vaults of Heaven," "No Matter What" from WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND
"People Like Us" "Best Friend" - MJlC's THE WILD PARTY
"The Old Red Hills of Home" "Real Big News" "A Rumblin' and a Rollin'" All the Wasted Time" "This is not Over Yet" - PARADE
"Where in the World is My Prince?" - MISS SPECTACULAR
"The King of Broadway" "When You've Got It, Flaunt It" - THE PRODUCERS
"A Home for You"  BATBOY
to name but a few. . .

Favorite Songs?

First, one that doesn't qualify, because it's supposed to be the last ten years and this one came out in '92, but I like the score by Menkin and Spencer for Weird Romance, and the song "A Man" is just plain funny.

Elsewhere, in no particular order:

Floyd Collins, (Guettel): "How Glory Goes."
Titanic, (Yeston): "Lady's Maid."
Triumph of Love, (Stock/Birkenhead): "The Tree," "Henchmen Are Forgotten."
Steel Peir, (Kander/Ebb): "Wet."
When Pigs Fly, (Gallagher/Waldrop): "Laughing Matters."
Parade, (Brown): "You Don't Know This Man," "All the Wasted Time."
Ragtime, (Flaherty/Ahrens): "Journey On," "New Music," "The Show Biz" (cut song).
Full Monty, (Yazbek): "Big Ass Rock."
Urinetown, (Hollmann/Kotis): "Don't Be the Bunny."
A New Brain, (Finn): "Sailing," "And They're Off."
3hree: The Mice, (O'Keefe/Benjamin): "Two Hours Here."
3hree: The Flight of the Lawnchair Man, (Nassif): "Tiny," "The Air Is Free."

It's worth noting, how Yeston, Flaherty & Ahrens and Kander & Ebb are the only writers on my list who were known for writing musicals prior to ten years ago.  Musicals are clearly not a dead art form.

Sorry, I still haven't had a chance to hear the score for Wicked, or there would be another old-timer on that list.

“The Blame,” “Barrett’s Song,” and “We’ll Meet Tomorrow” from Titanic.

“Back to Before” and “Our Children” from Ragtime.

“Forget About the Boy” from TMM

I like No Moon and The Night Was Alive from Titanic.  I like Pop-You-Lahr from Wicked.  I like A Place Called Home from A Christmas Carol.  I like the opening number of Ragtime.  I like Stop Time from Big, and the love song (sorry, title escapes me) from Flight, both by Maltby and Shire).  I like You Can't Stop the Beat from Hairspray.  However, I think my favorite entire score of the last decade would be Mr. Walter Edgar Kennon's Time and Again.  Not the version heard with two-pianos at MTC, though, which had a few new songs which were not as interesting as the ones they replaced - no, as problematic as the book and staging were at the Old Globe in San Diego, the score came through gloriously.  On its way to MTC they cut my favorite song, Fairy-Tale Life, but my other two favorites remained, thank goodness - She Dies and the title song.  Time and Again is an opportunity lost.  I've written about it many times so I won't rehash any of it here, other than to say had they gotten rid of the book writer and gotten a great director I believe this show would have been a smash.  It was all there - it just needed a director with vision and style (Mr. O'Brien has done really good work since, but his work in San Diego was awful), and someone whom Mr. Kennon would listen to.  Mr. Viertel, despite every chance in the world, could not or would not fix the book.  He has spent his life, as a critic and a dramaturge, telling others how to fix their shows.  I'm quite certain people gave him ideas on how to fix this show (I being one of them) and it mattered not.  He could not do it.  It's a crime.  I offered to record songs from it on way too many occasions and was always turned down with "I don't have the rights".  Well, that, of course, made no sense to me then and it makes no sense to me now, especially after the MTC debacle.

Burst pipe. I'll never forget one lovely spring day while I was still teaching, I had my door closed, and I noticed some water seeping in under the door. I opened the door, and the entire hallway was awash in the contents of a burst water pipe in the boys' bathroom. Needless to say, there was indeed raw sewage floating up the hallway. Gross, I know. but absolutely true. All the classrooms were evacuated, and we sat in the gym for the rest of the day (about two hours).

I know this site has a lot of Sutton Foster fans, and it's just been announced that Ms. Foster will be one of the stars of the first "Broadway By The Year" this season.  The year is 1926, the date is 2/9, and the other stars are Marc Kudisch ("Bells Are Ringing," "Millie", tv's "Birdie"), Nancy Opel ("Urinetown", "Triumph of Love"), Nancy Anderson ("Wonderful Town", London and tv's "Kiss Me Kate"), and Bill Daugherty (of the cabaret team Daugherty and Fields).  These concerts are always excellent.

Good morning!

I'm going to try to have another basically productive day today, so I probably won't be posting as often as I have in the past few days...  But I shall post!

As for songs from the past ten years - Most of my choices have already been mentioned.  But I'll give it a try:

As I've mentioned before, I have a very soft spot in my heart for the show and the score of big - especially, "I Wanna Go Home," "I Want to Know," and "Stop, Time".  -And when I MDed a production of it a few years ago, I have to say that some of the songs that were put back in for the then-licensed version should have stayed out, imho.

Violet - "Let It Sing!," "Lay Down Your Head," the Opening Sequence ("I Am On My Way"), and the Finale ("Bring Me To Light") - which has one of the most beautiful and emotional and musical arcs I've ever experienced - and that one "release" in the middle where the trio of voices are floating... Wow!  Again, I feel very fortunate to have worked on a production of this show.  -And I can't wait to see Caroline, or Change this weekend!

Aida - There are some fun numbers in the show... I know it may not be to everyone's taste, but still fun nonetheless - and Elton John's style is very much in evidence (and since I'm a pianist... ;)).  From someone who's played in the pit of this show, my favorite songs are "My Strongest Suit" (mainly the runway sequence, which, unfortunately, is edited to within an inch of it's life of the OCR), "The Gods Love Nubia," "Elaborate Lives," "Easy As Life", and "I Know the Truth" (which I love playing at auditions if the singer actually sings and belts it!).

The Full Monty - "Big Ass Rock," "You Walk With Me", and "Breeze on the Water" - as well as the cut song "Maid of the Mist" - which BK recorded with Emily Skinner.

A Class Act - Yes, the songs were writtend more than ten years ago, but the show is within the time frame.  "Paris Through the Window," "Mona," "Under Separate Cover," "The Next Best Thing to Love" and "Self-Portrait".  -OH, and the one numbers, the blues one that did not make it to the OCR - which I can't remember the title of right now.  -Hmm, I guess I like/d a lot of songs from this show.

Hairspray - Heck, there's not much I don't like in this score, but "You Can't Stop The Beat" truly gets me moving my feet, tapping my toes, clapping my hands and smiling(!) every time!

-I know I'm leaving off a bunch of stuff, but they're not crossing my mind right now.  Oh, and I guess the usual suspects from Urinetown, Parade, Titanic, etc.

RE: Jack Finney - I like "The Picture on the Wall" which was the basis for the movie Maxie - with the story somewhat changed.  However, I still think the original story - and even the movie revision - would make a good musical.  With the flapper-era being represented and well as the "present", the possible score has many musical possibilities.

-Oh, and it was amazing just how much warmer my room was last night after I had taken out the window A/C unit!!  Nor more annoying draft!  And the temp was in the teens last night here too!

*But we're in the mid-50s right now, and I'm hoping to get outside for a little bit to enjoy it.

Aida: "I Know the Truth"

A Class Act - Yes, the songs were writtend more than ten years ago, but the show is within the time frame.  "Paris Through the Window," "Mona," "Under Separate Cover," "The Next Best Thing to Love" and "Self-Portrait".

Ah, I also LOVE "I know the truth" and "The next best thing to love".

Btw, DR Matt: Did you get my Alias email?

I spoke to my sis this morning and we were both like, "omg they gave us so much information". It's hard to digest!

Well, there seems to be quite the brouhaha about me and this site over at a DVD site (not ours, obviously).  These people are upset that I had the temerity to TAKE THEM ON.  Oh, well.  They call me all manner of names, think I have a "limited" history in the show business, think I have an ego huger than theirs, and think this site is stupid and strange (I'll give them the latter - the former is surely their province).  I am glad that they've come over here and had some fun, though - hopefully some of our chicken recipes came in handy (they REALLY seemed upset by those posts - didn't understand them at all).

OH - I just pulled my book off the shelf, something didn't seem write... The name of the Finney novel should be, "Marion's Wall" - I guess I had a little Craig Carnelia on the brain.  -And the collection I have, "3 by Finney" also has "The Woodrow Wilson Dime," and "The Night People" in it.  Very good reads.

-And who is the real C.M. - I must have missed it?  Or not read between the lines as well as usually do? ;)

A "limited" history in Show Business?  I guess they consider guest starring on all the top 70s sit-coms; writing, co-directing and starring in the best musical film since the golden days of MGM; producing scores (no pun intended) of CDs and being nominated for a Grammy; writing three excellent books of fiction; etc. "limited".  What are their credits?

Thank you kindly, WEL.  I really DON'T have an ego about any of it, that's the joke.  These people are mostly very young.  There will be a column about this over on our new site, but DVD, for some reason, has made everyone into an armchair expert.  This didn't happen with VHS, it didn't happen with BETA, it didn't happen with laserdisc - it's just very curious.  Most of them are not in the business, not that that means anything.  One of them, in this amusing thread that's turned into a bashing ME thread, said they'd saved a post in which I said that Robert Harris was a sham (I don't THINK I used that word in relation to Mr. Harris personally) because I suggested that the "restoration" of My Fair Lady was made to seem all out of proportion to what was actually done.  The negative for that film was not damaged beyond repair, it was in pretty good shape - you can see for yourself if you watch the documentary.  They're cleaning it up - they did a good job of cleaning it up, repairing splices and tears and getting dirt off.  This is not MAJOR - major is faded, major is destroyed, major is shrunk.

After I got over the initial surprise, I was happy for my mother that she had this lovely fantasy toward the end of her life. After she died, I phoned the man (in South America) and told him of her death. Of course, I'd never spoken to him before and haven't since, but I felt he should know.
If you feel better having thrown away the letters and poems, Jane, then it wasn't a mistake.

Yes, DR Jennifer, I got your e-mail. I just didn't think I had anything to add to the comments I had made on site. I finally put everything together that the show revealed, but I'd still like to see the earlier episodes this season to see if indeed everything we were told last night jibes with what we previously saw. Very sweet. When I saw her in September, she could still get around with help. Now she can't. She was pleased to hear last time that she has fans on this site, so if any of you have messages, I'll convey them.

DR Matt - you have been Karma-lized!

I laughed out loud earlier today when I was reading the inane remarks on the home theater forum (no harm in calling a spade a spade).

I mainly laughed at the attacks on BK's so-called ego.  in my humble opinion, and I am sure the drs will agree with me, the BK we have come to know and love is one of the least egocentric creatures on god's green earth!  He's smart, he's brainy, he's witty, he's multi-talented, he's a multi-tasker AND he has allowed each and everyone of us the opportunity to present our views publicly on HIS FORUM, whether or not he personally agreed with what we have to say.
How unlike other hosts/moderators of less popular (and less populated) sites on the net. . .

thanks, bk!

DR Panni,
Your story about the letters made me remember a dear old friend, Mrs. G., who passed away several years ago at a mentally sharp and physically not too bad 103. Mrs. G. grew up in England before moving to Toronto at about age 10. She had the best stories, some of them quite bawdy. The one I thought about was of her suitor who was so sure she'd agree to his proposal that he bought her a set of fancy dishes. When she rejected him, he told her, "Take the dishes. And every time one of them breaks, you'll know my heart is breaking, too." I asked Mrs. G., then in her 90s, what happened to the dishes. "Oh," she said simply, "I use them for my Passover set."

One of the topics at yesterday's sparkling chat was soup. DR Emily mentioned French onion, made with beer. An important question: Do you add additional stock, or is it all beer? (I've been in a French onion soup mood, and I have a good recipe - does anyone want it? - but hesitate to use a stock made of cow bones.)

Hold on, first things first...
[size=10]Congratulations, Panni![/size]

(Had to shout, because I think she's left her computer.)

Now, about those cow bones...Part of what makes beef stock what it is, is the natural gelatin that is in the bones themselves.  It adds a richness, what is called "mouth feel," that can't be faked.  If you've really got qualms about using beef stock, then don't.  You can get a lot of flavor from gently caramelizing the onions.  Just don't count on it tasting the same as it would if you were using beef stock.

That said, Alton Brown, on Good Eats, uses canned broth!  In fact, he uses...Heck, better for you to find out for yourself.  His recipe can be found here, (http://www.foodtv.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_156,00.html) and the transcript for the entire show can be found at the Good Eats Fan Page. (http://www.goodeatsfanpage.com/GEFP/index.htm)  (For the transcript, look under "Episodes," then find "A Bowl of Onion."  It's all there.  Including pictures!)

My first day back at school has been sooo stressful (I'm back to work now, being a writing tutor with a lot of downtime).  My schedule is soo filled now, and I had a lot of conflicts I had to sort out so I didn't end up commiting myself to work, school and rehearsals at overlapping times.  I had to scramble around getting scheduling sorted, and doing all kinds of other fun stuff like paying for my new parking permit.  Blah blah blah.

What a great (and expansive topic du jour!)  I don't know where to begin.  I'll go with one song from a show, just for the sake of brevity.

Ragtime--"Back to Before"
Passion--"Loving You"
Hello Again--"Tom"
Parade--"All the Wasted Time"
A New Brain--"Sailing"
Titanic--"No Moon"
A Class Act--"Better"
Urinetown--"Privelege to Pee"
Thoroughly Modern Millie--"Forget About the Boy"
The Producers--"Springtime for Hitler"
The Last 5 Years--"A Summer in Ohio"
The Wild Party (MJlC)--"This is What It Is"
Bounce--"Talent"
Wicked--"Defying Gravity"
Avenue Q--"Schadenfreude"

I'm sure I'm missing some that I will beat myself over the head for later.

Anybody see CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM last night? Stephen Schwartz must've been laughing.

YES!  That was awful...Guy Haines does a much better Corner of the Sky!  ;)

Congrats on your script!

The single most important person in creating the person I am today, my teacher, friend, and mentor John Ingle, was recently let go from his long-running role on, I believe, General Hospital.

First off, Steve Kmetko is a Yooper.  He, he he.

Second off, congratulations Panni.

Third off, here are some of my favorite recent musical songs...

"Mr. Cladwell" and "Cop Song" from Urinetown.  (Is it just me, or is this show awfully Brechtian?)
"Breeze off the River" and "Big Black Man" from The Full Monty.
"Til Him" from The Producers.
"Not for the Life of Me" (both versions!) and "How the Other Half Lives" from Thoroughly Modern Millie.
"I Could Get you in JJ", "Dirt" and "For Susan" from Sweet Smell of Success.  (I would've loved to see this show.  I really enjoy the CD a lot.)
"When I'm By Your Side", "We Share Everything", and "One Plus One Equals Three" from Side Show.
"Popular" from Wicked.
"The Internet is For Porn", "Schadenfreude", and "My Girlfriend, Who Lives in Canada" from Avenue Q.
"Bounce" from Bounce.

There's quite a few more, but that's a decent taste, I think.

Has anyone seen the 1996 film Rainbow with Bob Hoskins? The basic plot: Rainbow is about children who follow the whereabouts of a rainbow. One of the kids steals the rainbow's gold (yes! The rainbows gold) and this causes color to drain from the world.

It was the last movie I worked on before I moved down to Florida and was curious if I made the final cut.

Well, having seen everybody else's lists and checking out my cd cabinet...I do have several new musicals from the last ten years...stuff like Titanic, Parade, Scarlet Pimpernel, Floyd Collins, Passion (ln last ten years?), The Producers, etc.  Heard most of them, seen a few onstage...remember liking things in context, but don't recall a lot standing outside on its own.  Got the wife WICKED & BOY FROM OZ for Christmas.  We haven't played them yet.  Like NIGHT OF THE HUNTER a lot.

One song I like alot is on the Hainse His Way album, The Sweetest of Nights and the Finest of Days...was the show it was from written in the last ten years?

I'm going to take a nap now.  I had to get up early to get my script off to The Powers That Be and then had a lunch with the wife and the business manager to find out we're doing just fine...we can go to London again this year...Had a lovely dish of penne bolagnesse at Sisley across the street from the Bus. Mgr's office.

Pete Rose was in there. I wanted to tell him I think that even though he's a pig of human being (I don't why everyone is so surprised to find out he bet on baseball.  What a revelation!),  he should still be in the Hall of Fame!  He was a great athlete and there are plenty of other louts, bigots, and ruffians enshrined in the Hall who were great ball players.  Why should Pete be left out?  How many times was Steve Howe forgiven and allowed back in the game for sticking cocaine up his nose?  A half a dozen?  Let's not be pious hypocrites.  Or be pious hypocrites, if you want.  You don't have to let him back in baseball (he was a lousy manager anyway...he was only great as a player), but put him the Hall.  There is no Hall of Fame without him.

But now I'm stuffed with pasta and have go see a heavy movie tonight (House of Sand and Fog), so I must nap.

Didn't Columbia do ANATOMY OF A MURDER? The box says the full frame aspect ratio is that of the original film, but that can't be right. It's a nice transfer, and I love the movie, but I wish they'd revisit it and redo (highly unlikely). Certainly aren't going to bad-mouth them when they've given so much. Couldn't LIVE without THE SOLID GOLD CADILLAC.

Sweetest of Days was written about four years ago, I think, so it definitely qualifies.

Anatomy was one of their screwups, as was Cowboy with Glenn Ford.  Both should be 1:85 and both are enhanced for widescreen TVs and in their proper ratio on the Columbia region 2 DVDs.  They both appear to be open matte, but the Anatomy open matte leaves far too much headroom in every shot.

Anyone know why?

Who but a film buff is going to want to buy ANATOMY OF A MURDER? Doing a full frame transfer frustrates the intended buying audience. Geez, you'd think they'd know this. Still, it looks and plays fine and using the least amount of stretch mode on my TV lops off enough of the top so that it looks just fine.

Robin's Pogo quote is also used in the article about Our Wedding - The Musical that can be found in this month's Dramatics.  Now, if only I could find this month's Dramatics.  You go into one of these magazine stores that boasts 50,000 different publications and they've never heard of it.  But the article, sans photos, can be found at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sweet-gang/message/1187

BK is correct in triplicate.  Ingle taught at Hollywood High then Beverly High, and, I believe, also at LACC . . . but what's the deal with his leaving General Hospital?

I think we've heard some pretty good songs from shows over the past ten years, perhaps better than the previous ten, which is a good sign.  Like Charles Pogue, I like a show with a strong book, and we haven't had a lot of these.  Tom Meehan wrote two books that outshine their scores.  In both The Producers and Hairspray, I found myself smiling at songs, patiently waiting for the book - and the belly laughs - to return.

The art of songwriting is still alive.  The art of libretto-writting, not so much.

The nice thing about not having a real job (by that, I mean a nine-to-five job), I can watch TV in the middle of the day.  Decided to nap to TCM.  See that the "real" GOODBYE GIRL is going to be on Thursday.  Has anyone seen the "fake" GOODBYE GIRL yet?  Has it played yet?  I don't want to see it.

Strange...but Anatomy of a Murder was shot...guess where?...Michigan's Upper Peninsula, specifically Marquette, my home town, which is called "Iron City" in the movie.  It was shot there before I was born, but there are many familiar landmarks in the movie for moi.

Jeff Daniels also wrote the stage play, and later a movie, called Escanaba in da Moonlight, which takes place in the U.P.

I have NO interest in the new version of THE GOODBYE GIRL. Again, a film that was in NO WAY in need of a remake.

These remakes actually make me kind of angry. Who thinks they're necessary, one wonders? I cannot get over why a talented filmmaker like Gus Van Sant would feel that there was any earthshaking need for a new color PSYCHO. And I read that this was a DREAM project of his? Huh? He had no original material that he had ALWAYS wanted to do a film of?

Just wanted to mention that the ever luscious John Burke (from AMC) begins anchoring E! News Daily this week. I stopped watching the show when Steve Kmetko was let go, but I may tune in tonight to see how John does.

I have long adored John Burke and got his autograph when he was doing that wonderful show on the FX channel called Personal-FX...sort of a TV version of Ebay where people brought in their collectables and had them appraised and viewers could call in and bid on the items. I was addicted to that show!

When did he leave AMC? And when did Steve Kmetko leave E? I guess I just don't get out much!

DR Panni, I didn't know Doris Dowling was looking for "The Party Crashers."  I believe I can do a little better than DR JR, as I think (right, JR?) that he got his copy from me.  So I can not only make a one-generation closer copy, I also have (don't tell anyone, OK?) a pristine print from a very famous film archive that may or may not be in your neck of the woods.  It does have a timecode caption, but the image is fantastic.  Let me know and I'm happy to dub a "double feature" (both versions) for you.

Is Doris Dowling related to Eddie Dowling?

JMK - Many many good vibes to you!  I've followed that situation for quite some time and it saddens me that people who work hard in the church must suffer for the narrow-mindedness of others.  My mother directed music at our Episcopal church for 20 years, and they are fortunate to have right now a very wise and open minded pastor.

Ann, our Priest is fantastic as is 95% of the congregation.  Unfortunately, the 5% who left radically affected the budget.  The good news is, no one has had to lose their jobs.  The bad news is, they had already promised me a raise for this year, so when you couple that with my new lower salary, I'm actually down about 40% from where I thought I'd be!

Good afternoon! Good early evening!

Well, day two of my "project", and another box and two "piles" have bit the dust.  Now I just need to put the "keep" stuff back into one box - so that I can do my final sort and file later.  *I'd venture into the filing phase now, but since I'm heading up to NYC Wednesday morning, that part will just have to wait.  I also have at least eight other boxes and bags to go through... and that's just the stuff outside of my storage closet.  Ah, well... Progress is progress.

It was very amazing - in a not so amazing way - all the stuff I've kept - or at least never threw away.  My eyes are tired from reading all the various receipts - those thermal printed ones don't "hold" their print too well.  Besides some obvious business and tax deductions, the only other type of receipt I kept were my gas receipts.  ???  We'll see if they make it past the second phase.

*And does anyone know if it's worth keeping a couple years worth of Gourmet magazines?  -However, the new design, layout and features aren't sitting too well with me.  Getting a little too slick and glossy.  Glossy I don't mind; slick and glossy is a different story.

I will soon be heading to the historic Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, Dear Readers.  When I originally purchased my ticket, the program was to be a screening of Cradle Will Rock, followed by a Q&A with Mr. Tim Robbins.  Subsequently, the program was changed to a double feature, with a screening of The Shawshank Redemption now first on the bill, then Mr. Robbins, followed by Cradle.

This is going to be one very long evening!

The time for the really big congrats, however, will be when the film (notice I say "when" not "if") is greenlit. At this point, I'm just relieved it's going forward.

And thank you for offering Doris Dowling copies of THE PARTY CRASHERS. (She's wasn't looking for a copy as far as I know - I think that was a bit of "Telephone" at work. One DR offered a copy, the next DR assumed she was looking for one.)  I'll let her know next time, but I don't think she's really up to it. She's not at all well and spends most of her time reading. Good evening all!

First of all Congrats to Panni!  I just had to give you a karma point, in case it helps to have one more when the time comes for the discussion.  I hope it's ok to wish luck--or would it be more proper to say,  break a pencil lead (leg)?  Which ever, I hope for  the best for you!

I really despise car trouble. I'm so car ignorant, so when something's wrong, I'm pretty clueless what's happening. I'm at the mercy of whatever they want to tell me.

I am of the opinion that I have a something tattooed in very middle of my forehead.  You can’t read it.  I can’t read it but when I go into a car repair shop it blazes forth in glowing color:

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%][size=10]S U C K E R !!!![/size][/glow][/move]

I mean they tell you the what have you simply HAD to be repaired, what am I going to say?  Up that point I didn't even know I had a what have you.  Of course it has to be fixed.

And the other problem being, if I have $100.00 put away for the repair, it will cost $200.00.  If I had $200.00 it would be $400.00.  You get the picture.

One of the ways I got into big time debt was over car repairs that I'm still not so sure I even needed.  I had to have a car to get back and forth to work so they had me.

Thank goodness those days are behind me.  I am debt free and intend to try to stay that way (unless something important comes along like a house) for as long as I can.  Come on lotto!

I was told we had the Naked Cowboy (or his twin) in town today.  I didn't get to go check it out and I didn't have my camera with me either but should he still be there next week, I will try to get a snap shot or two.

There's not much else I can say for today.

The laugh of the day came when I innocently asked where the rubber bands were that we got last week.  They had me convinced I had the box at  my desk.  It turned out it was not I but a co worker who had them.   I thought I was having a senior moment there for awhile because I remembered being handed the box but nothing after that.

It turned out I had set them on my desk to answer the phone and the co worker had taken the said box and didn't return it.  At the time I must have thought I had put them away which was why I couldn't remember where that was  for the life of me today!

I  enjoyed the music from DOTV.  Being a Meat Loaf and Michael Crawford fan made it that much more enjoyable for me.

Well, I paid the $85 ($79 plus tax) just for the dealer to look at my car. >:( The problem is a "pressure feedback sensor" and a "PCV vacuum tube" (it's a small rubber tube that's attached to some vacuum pump in the car).  They both will need to be replaced soon, but I ain't got the $270 to do anything now.

Actually, the $270 quote included the $85 for the diagnostic, so now it'll only be $185.  I have to wait until I get my W2 form from the Washinton Center where I've worked backstage...not ushering:  load-in and load-out of shows, etc., so that I can get my income tax refund to pay for the thing.  This was supposed to be the first year that I didn't have to use my income tax refund to pay for anything on my car :'( (last year I had several services done at one time and wrote a check for $900!)
Title: Re:THE SHIMMY SHAKE
Post by: George on January 12, 2004, 06:05:48 PM
But, I've had ALL the recommended services done so it runs quite well, otherwise.  I intend to have this car for a long time.  The longest that I've had a car was 8 years (and that was with two engines--big mistake).  Anyway, it's better than paying $300+ a month for 4-6 years for a new car.  I don't need that!

Well, I'm off for a (supposed to be short) meeting at the Washington Center about the Tony Bennett concert that's happening in a couple of weeks and then I want to go to Seattle tonight.  I bought an import CD at the Seattle Tower Records for $26 for my niece's birthday, then went home and found (and got) a brand new copy on eBay for only $10.  Damn!  Why don't I check these things before hand.  Anyway, it's unopened and I have the receipt.  I'll return it and get my money back (hopefully) or at least a store credit.  That's okay, too (an Into the Woods reference).
Title: Re:THE SHIMMY SHAKE

Thanks for the wishes, Danise!
Whenever I go in to have anything done with my car I try not to dress too well and always state right off the top that I'm broke and just need for the thing to run without killing me or anybody else. I say this whether I'm broke or not. If they still tell me that the widgywoofwoof needs replacing (they can't resist, it's in their oil-tainted blood) then I ask (blink blink) "Well, will it run safely until I save up the money to have it fixed...sir?" if whatever it is, is really dangerous, they'll say no. But I've never yet had them say no.
I fully expect them to find something each time out because they ALWAYS do. I went in for a Smog Check when I first got to LA and when I came back to pick up the car they had a list of things which needed attention. And I had the car fully checked out before I left Colorado.

I didn't ask if it'll run until I can save money.  I told them that I can't afford it until I get my income tax refund.  This seems to be one of those problems that can wait...thankfully.

Favorite Show Songs of from Last Ten Years

Avenue Q: "Fine Fine Line" "Schadenfreude" "Fantasies Come True"

And here I thought you were gonna say "My Girlfriend who is canadian". That song cracks me up :)

Oh and I LOVE "Fine Fine line". Made me cry the first 10 times I heard it, because I am living it.

If We Never Meet Again (BK recorded this one and is not on the semi-original cast album. Unfortunatley the complete song is not used)

Children of the Wind
Nothing Will Hurt Us Again
Rags
Blame It On a Summer's Night

It was TCB whom I thought wrote it.

That's in answer to Tom of Oz's question of several days ago about something I misread that Danise had posted.

But it could have been td, too.

You'd think I'd get around to updating my picture.

I'd think I would.

But I need to get a few days behind me first 'cause there's no access time to the scanner when I'm at it and I can't be at the scanner when it's accessible.

Noel---
Re John Ingles and GENERAL HOSPITAL.  ABC is on a budget slashing kick and are getting rid of people on all their soaps.  On GH, first they let 90-year-old Anna Lee (also known from films such as "How Green Was My Valley" and "The Sound Of Music") go.  They also got rid of Rachel Ames who had been with the show 39 years, since shortly after it went on the air.  Then they fired Ingles and three other actors (including Kin Shrinner who played Scotty Baldwin for over twenty-five years and was a big part of the landmark Luke and Laura story).  Since they tape so far in advance, Ingles is still airing on the show for a while although he may have already taped his final episode..  My guess is that they will kill off Ingles and Lee (who plays his wife) together and it will probably be in a mob-related storyline.  GENERAL HOSPITAL has re-fashioned itself as "The Sopranos in the Afterrnoon", and has slowly gotten rid of every character without mob connections.

I know that a while ago, BK tried out an online dating service.
Well, over the weekend, I too, "joined" a couple of online "personals," (which is dating, without dinner).
So, have any other DRs tried the internet for meeting, greeting, dating and possibly mating? ? ?
Would any DRs try online ads or dating services?

Yes, my pic and info are still at one or two places, the places where you can have your info placed there for free but if you want to contact someone you see in their listings, it costs. The only communications I had were from people who were just too far away from me; I knew it wouldn't work out.

I also have my profile and pics at gay.com but most people only check them out if you go sit in one of the chat rooms, and then their curiosity causes them to pull down your profile and read it. I've been contacted some and had a few dates, but they didn't turn into anything lasting or meaningful.

Title: Re:THE SHIMMY SHAKE
Post by: bk on January 12, 2004, 08:57:39 PM
In fact, the shimmy was invented by Mr. Herman Flut.  Mr. Flut had a sister named Kate who had quite a bit of electroshock therapy in her life, therefore she was proned to bouts of shaking maniacally at the least provocation.  She called these bouts of shaking the shimmies.  One day, Mr. Flut was watching his sister in the midst of one of her bouts, and he was heard to say, "I wish that I could shimmy like my sister Kate" and the rest is history.

Why don't these GUESTS come out of the woodwork, especially our lovely visitors from that lovely DVD site.  Just register and post your thoughts here where I can actually respond to them - oh, I forgot - that would take some modicum of guts.  Much easier to throw brickbats when someone can't respond, ain't it?  I'm ready, I'm willing, and I'm able, baby, so let's SHIMMY.

Ohh....and on the TOD.....the opening of Ragtime....makes the movie so trivial....and will we ever see a show so "produced" like that again?.....(if not production wise.....cast wise.....(and I never SAW it)....but it's plays so well on disc

I can tell you that I saw the show with the original cast, and on the Friday night I saw it, that opening number stopped the show cold. There were people standing. It and KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN were definitely my two favorites musicals of the 1990s that I saw. I suspect ASSASSINS would have been the other had I seen the original company. I've seen other productions of ASSASSINS that thrilled me to the depths of my bones, just like those two Broadway shows did.

I saw a show get stopped once.

It was the first performance I saw of "Wicked."

I don't know if the scene is still there...or if the Emerald City guard still has the line.  But Fiyero was in charge of a group of men in search of Elphaba, who had found Dr. Dillamond in a cell in the Wizard's palace.  Doctor Dillamond was a goat, and was the last animal faculty member on the staff of Shiz University until he mysteriously disappeared.  By the time Elphaba found him, the doctor had lost the power of speech and could only "Baaa-a-a-a-a."

Elphaba spirited him off the stage as the guards approached.  Suddenly, Fiyero arrived on the scene, and one of the guards said, "Sir, there's a goat on the lam."

Stopped the show cold.

Doubt seriously they left it in.  But it certainly stunned the actors on the stage!

As Alan Young so beautifully put it in The Time Machine, "We've got all the time in the world."

I saw Ragtime several times here at the Shubert.  It was  wonderfully realized, although I felt it didn't succeed  100% as a total experience.  But that opening number was incredible.  As was our very own Jason Graae as Houdini.

Yes, "There's a goat on the lam" is still in the show and it still gets a huge laugh. What gets an even bigger laugh is Glinda's "Let the little girl go...and her dog...Dodo." Kristi's such a hoot...!

Seeing MADAMA BUTTERFLY on Friday night and then seeing BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (for the first time ever...can you believe it?) next Tuesday evening. Who's excited!?!! I am!

Der Brucer and I got to see Ragtime thrice!  The first time was during previews, towards the back of the Shubert Theater.  The opening number was stunning, but it was "Journey On" that literally brought tears to my eyes, I found it so moving.

Less than a week later, we got a call from one of our friends from Log Cabin, telling us that, if we wanted, we could get to see the show for free for the Los Angeles Opening Night.  Hey, we loved it the first time, why not go again?  The idea was that the publicity people wanted to make sure the theater was filled, so there was a sort of "stand-by" line of seat fillers.  Very Oscar Nite, it a way, but without the seat shuffling.

So there we are, in our suits, and everyone else (who paid) has taken their seats, and we've literally been waiting a couple of hours in the sun on a Sunday but with no one sketching our pictures, and the rest of the people in line look OK but they're not in suits.  Finally, they signal the line of us freebie-seekers to come on in, and we start to make our way, when der Brucer and I get pulled aside by one of the publicity people who pulls us into the theater through a different door and escorts us to the very front row!

OK, it was a little to the side.  It was very to the side.  By the end of the show, my neck had a crick in it from looking hard to my left for the entire time.  But it was definately worth it.  In fact, having seen the show from the back of the orchestra level (but quite center) the first time, seeing it from such a different perspective made it all the more interesting.

Stokes has an amazing amount of charisma onstage!

Third time, late in the run, most of the LA cast had moved on to Broadway or other jobs.  But der Brucer wanted to see it again, and was able to get another deal, this time on tix up in the balcony.  Most of the others around us were in college or high school.  The guys couldn't figure out what the attraction was.  The girls were very much in love with the piece, particularly in love with the self-empowerment of the character of Mother.  (Maybe if the Titanic had sunk during the last hour, the guys would have enjoyed at least part of it.)

Yeah, the show loses steam towards the end.  Let's face it, by that time, everyone is exhausted.  But I still found it to be great theater, all three times.

We still have not had the good fortunate to see a production of "Ragtime" - it very nearly made to OZ but Livent fell apart at that stage.
We adore both the concept and cast Cds and have the UK concert version on video and transferred to DVD. It is such a moving experience just in concert. I still admire the film and love the book. Doctorow's "Book Of Daniel" moves me even more and the film is good too (Daniel). "Lune Lake" and "World's Fair" are great reading as well.

Good evening!  Good late night!

WHEW!  I was able to consolidate about three more piles of "stuff" and two boxes of "stuff" into: 8 bundles of various magazines and catalogs for recycling, two paper bags full of assorted papers for recycling, three bags of trash (which includes three small bags of shredded receipts!)... and one box of "keeper" magazines, and a one box of assorted "keeper" papers.  -Oh, and these two keeper boxes includes the stuff I kept from yesterday's sorting session.  Not bad, not bad at all if I may say so myelf - which I guess I am doing.  And now that that's done I can... Get my haircut, do my laundry, have a meeting about two upcoming major gigs... oh, and pack for NYC!!!  Whew!  As long as I don't sleep in until almost Noon tomorrow/today, I should be able to get everything done withour being too harried.  *I actually like going to the laundromat - the attendant there is a hoot, and she always let me use "her" dryers if she's not using them herself.  And it's kind of nice having someone to talk to while waiting for the machines to finish.

So, before I get ready for bed... and I probably should have been in bed hours ago...

[move=left,scroll,6,purple,100%]!!!CONGRATULATIONS, DR LAURA II!!![/move]

DR JRand - Yes, I got your e-mail.

DR Uncle SWW - You keep mentioning the four dogs... Where exactly does der Brucer sleep then?   :o

And, finally, an observation - I noticed that most of our "favorites lists" covered most of the same shows and songs.  Then I started to think - "Just how many new, original, praise-worthy scores and shows have made it to Broadway - or at least some sort of major production and/or recording in the past ten years?"  Hmmm....

Goodnight.
