Well, you've read the notes, the notes rained AND poured, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently mooin' in the rain.
-
And the word of the day is: GARTH!
-
I might try to see some of the Preminger films at the Egyptian this weekend, since I do only live a few blocks away. Which ones do you most highly recommend Bruce?
-
All of them.
-
Will we never get to page two?
-
I cannot sit in this chair one second more - my back is killing me and frankly I never did anything to my back so why it feels it necessary to perpetrate a homicide on me I'll never know.

~~~Back Vibes for BK!!~~~
-
Topic of the Day: the first movie that came to mind was "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World." :D
-
The second movie that I thought of might not exactly fit the bill, but I don't care. It's "The Muppet Movie!"
TOD
Of course it all depends of your definition of all star movie.
There is
Grand Hotel
The Poseidon Adventure
The Towering Inferno
Murder On the Orient Express
and all the other Agatha Christie adaptations that came after it
The Ten Commandments
The High and the Mighty
Airport (and its sequels)
Earthquake
I did have an e-mail from Tomovoz just the other day. I can't speak for him, but I don't believe anything has happened at this site to drive him away. Well, except for Slingblade, and of course he could single-handedly close the whole board down. ;) I believe that Tom is still grieving the loss of his beloved Fosca. I think there are a few other personal things going on, but I expect that he is just taking one of those time-outs that we all need from time to time.
-
T.O.D.
My first choice is SHIP OF FOOLS. It is a film that I never tire of watching. Wonderful performances from everyone involved. ** I also recommend MusicGuy's CD with The Theme from Ship of Fools. I forget the title of the CD at the moment, and I am too tired to go looking for it right now; but Kerry can tell you, or you can look it up.
Because of postage costs and all, I went ahead and ordered the DELUXE edition of The Cid.
Good morning, DR KERRY - I'll be with you in a minute - as Ms Gale Storm used to always say.
-
Thanks to DRS DAKOTA CELT and DR JMK on my search yesterday.
Being sued for $250,000 when you're making about $18K per annum must be sort of a shock.
-
Thursday morning greetings! We had a light dusting of snow overnight, but not enough to cause any driving problems. Today is payday and, this afternoon, the January edition of Grantseeking Basics.
Medical procedure vibes to DR Singdaw!
-
Yes, he recorded the main theme and the "Tango Tudesco" I was listening to that CD last week or so (more precisely i was trying to drown the stereo of the stripper who lives next door-- she's losing her hearing from being in clubs and bars all the time that she doesn't always judge the volume accurately.)
-
I like DEATH ON THE NILE. Ustinov, Mia Farrow, Niven, Lansbury,Maggie Smith and Bette Davis...I assume it was made because of the huge success, 4 years earler, of MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS, but I prefer DEATH to the ORIENT...The other, not exactly all star, is L>A>Confidential;Even when the character has no lines, like the actor cast as gangster Mickey Cohen,you've seen him in other films and he and everyone down to the extras are 'spot on'.
-
TOD: I love "Ship of Fools," "Grand Hotel," "Dinner at Eight." Even "Towering Inferno" had some good performances. The original "Airport" (the one with Helen Hayes) was good, too.
-
Thanks to Messrs. Barnum and Earles, I got to see three episodes of Miss Storm saying that very thing last night. Did Gale Storm have any ownership in the show by then? It sure seems like it, although I know Hal Roach (along with many others) never gave up a percentage of anything if they didn't have to!
-
Does PEPE count as an all-star film?
-
TOD:
Sleuth.
The original, not the re-make.
Hey, there may have been a limited number of parts, but they were all played by stars!
Murder By Death
-
Good morning!
It didn't seem quite as cold this morning as previous mornings, but it's back to very gray skies with some rain in the forecast for later. Seems typically January.
-
I might try to see some of the Preminger films at the Egyptian this weekend, since I do only live a few blocks away. Which ones do you most highly recommend Bruce?
Personally, Ms. Patti, I don't think BK read your question correctly. You specifically asked "most highly recommend," which presupposes that, even with a list of films that are all superlatives, some may be even more superlative than others. If you had asked him "recommend" without the "most highly", then his answer of "All of them" would have made sense.
-
It's grey overhead here in Rehoboth, DR Matt.
Nice to have something in common!
-
I loved many of the suggestions of the TOD. My favorites:
HOW THE WEST WAS WON
DINNER AT EIGHT
THE WOMEN
JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG
THE YELLOW ROLLS-ROYCE
-
I must head to work.
-
TV Reminder:
The last new UGLY BETTY for the season (unless something happens soon with the strike)
Two episodes of CHUCK - one at 8 and one at 10, the last available episodes.
-
I'll also be watching SUPERNATURAL at 9 tonight since I didn't have a chance to see it when it first aired. New episodes of it and SMALLVILLE return next week.
-
Hmmm...
Madx4 World...
HTWWW...
Cinerama was made for all-star movies. How else could they fill up that vast amount of screen?
-
Today I'll be finishing the JAG episode that I began last night and didn't quite finish along with watching RENO 911 and PROJECT RUNWAY. Not sure if I'll get to CSI: NY today or not.
-
Re: Ugly Betty
I personally would have liked the season to end right where last week's episode left off, with the end of the murder trial. I don't see why every series has to have cliffhangers dangling all over the place.
-
DR Jennifer,
As to why MEDIUM won't be on for four weeks. Well, next week is the State of the Union Presidential address which will spill into the 10 o'clock hour.
From what I understand, the next couple of weeks will feature extended episodes of AMERICAN GLADIATORS and DEAL OR NO DEAL.
New MEDIUM episodes will return for part of February sweeps.
-
No, I really have to get going.
Keep the fires going, Matt!
-
It was a pleasure watching HAWAII FIVE-O last week. The last episode in the set was the last episode of the season, but no different from any other last episode: no cliffhangers, no artificial drama. It concluded a two part episode, and that was that.
I LONG for those old days. The cliffhanger stuff is, in most cases, so unnecessary to get me to tune in again next season.
-
No, I really have to get going.
Well DR KERRY - according to a cover article in the June 6-12, 1959 TV GUIDE:
"The changes included the sale of her series (The Gale Storm Show) to Independent Television Corporation last October by Hal Roach, Jr, who discovered Gale for television seven years ago.... And recent events included her show's sudden move to rented facilities at Desilu after the home studio, Roach, became involved in a securities scandal.
"Of all these matters, Miss Storm said she felt worst about the decline of her old studio. 'All of our sets are still there on the soundstage. I cried on my way out.'"
Miss Storm continues: "I felt a sense of frustration about the show. I would read a script and want to change so many things. I felt that I was just 'busy Margie' again. Everything was too broad, too strong."
"So she got the pilot film out and made EVERYBODY watch it again. So there were changes made.
"As a result ITC agreed to a new production procedure with the move to Desilu. The cast spends one day around the table thrashing out script and stagng problems before rehearsals begin. Miss Storm reports that the script budget has been increased from $2000 to $4000."
[The Gale Storm Show was cancelled at the end of it's 1960 ABC season where it had moved from CBS.]
Is backposting like backpacking or backpedalling?
-
Hello, everyone.
I'm off to the doc in a couple minutes myself--routine appointment, no anesthesia. Probably won't post again until tomorrow.
-
I, too, have missed TOMOVOZ.
-
Doctor vibes to DRs SINGDAW and JEANNE.
-
I, too, have always loved MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS. I've read DEATH ON THE NILE, but don't recall ever seeing the adaptation. Must add that to my (lengthy) queue.
-
Quiz for today.
Here is a photo from an article in the same June, 1959, TV GUIDE, about a young television actor from New York.
He and his ex-wife make about $10,000 a month making hats he designs.
Can you identify him from the photo?
-
If JRand knows of a way to talk to ghosts, several of you could have some interesting conversations with my uncle and get lots of G2 (intelligence) on Ms Storm.
-
Gotta scoot.
VIBES OF HEALTH AND COMFORT to DR SINGDAW!
-
Used to be a fairly common practice for one network to take on a cancelled show after another network let it go. Certainly the show I'm watching right now on DVD - JAG lasted three lackluster seasons on NBC before CBS took it over and made a smash hit out of it.
-
I'm not much of a film guy, so all the movie discussions are pretty much out of my league. The only "all star cast" movie that I can recall seeing was "Last of Sheila," which was, of course, all kinds of fun.
Sorry to hear about your back, bk... back pain is the pits, and about as curable as the cold. With the contradictory advice that I've gotten for my own ("Try heat." "Try cold." "Try resting it." "Try working it out."), it's no wonder people go nuts at the medical profession.
And, of course, Disney moved his SUnday show from ABC to NBC in the early 1960s and renamed it. Later, when DIsney and ABC fell under the same umbrella of ownership, Disney's show moved back to ABC.
Well, you just never know about that. Oscar Wilde had a wife and a couple of children.
I shall work on that....but maybe I don't want to know. ;D
I picked up the complete I Love Lucy with my Border's coupon a couple of days ago. Neat packaging. Only dipped into the Bonus Disc as Betsy and I are still wending our way through Heroes. Glad we decided not to let the kids watch after the first episode or so as it is certainly dark at times.
-
I also got Take Flight and 2 of the Sondheim Sings CDs (are there only two) with the 40% off CDs coupon, so that was nice. Plus I can write off the expense on my taxes (can't I, FJL?). ;)
-
I'm heading down to clean up a bit for lunch out with friends.
WBBL.
-
DR MATTH is correct it is Mr Alan Sues. His ex-wife Phyllis Sues was one of the models in the pool with him, and they were still a musical duo in revues around town including "Fun and Games of 1959" that they were currently rehearsing.
"Before returning to the West Coast (he was born in San Francisco), Sues spent seven years in New York, two of them in 'Tea and Sympathy'. 'I played the bully,' Sues said. 'Some cats swing that way'"
Meow.
-
The new Sergio Mendes CD is almost here and I must say the samples I've heard are superb. It's a return to form for us B66 lovers, and features much less rap than Timeless. The guest stars (including Mr. and Mrs. Alpert) are all great, too.
-
'Some cats swing that way'"
Well, that is definitely a euphemism. ;D
TOD: A couple of pretty good all-star casts can be found in the 1956 "Around the World in 80 Days" and the 1962 "The Longest Day."
Good morning, all! I was up at 6:15 am, bathed, dressed and to the laundromat by 7. By 7:30, I had my captain's bed and its drawers toted to the basement. Well, he's scheduled for a green-clothes day - that's regular registers. However, with the modern non-sexist work ethic of equal-work-for-equal-pay-unless-it's-too-tough-for-a-girl, he might be called upon if one of the regular wranglers goes AWOL.
TIMES (http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/books/children/article3241394.ece)
Three Pigs story ruled ‘offensive to Muslims’
A children’s story based on the tale of the Three Little Pigs was rejected for an award after judges became concerned that it would offend Muslims.
The animated virtual book for primary school children, The Three Little Cowboy Builders, was also criticised for its potential to offend builders.
The row centred on the Bett awards, which were supported by Becta, the Government’s technology agency for schools. The judges’ remarks, reported on the education technology website Merlin John Online, included: “Is it true that all builders are cowboys, builders get their work blown down, and builders are like pigs?
“The idea of taking a traditional tale and retelling a story is fine, but it should not alienate parts of the workforce. Judges would not recommend this product to the Muslim community in particular.”
And here comes the payback:
DUTCH POLITICIAN PLANS TO AIR FILM CRITICIZING THE KORAN (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,325305,00.html)
A Dutch politician known for his views against Islam plans to air a film he produced that is critical of the Koran, which he likens to Adolf Hitler's hateful writings.
Parliamentarian Geert Wilders spoke to FOX News about the documentary, insisting the Muslim holy book is dangerous and should be banned.
"I believe the Koran is, indeed, 'Mein Kampf.' They are the same package," Wilders said. "I believe that our culture is far better than the retarded Islamic culture."
From Ron:
Loved MEDIUM. I knew Allison would be proven right, but I just couldn't put the dreams together in any meaningful way, so the ending was a wonderful surprise!
LOL-Just before the mystery was revealed I started to tell Keith my theory, then decided he wouldn’t want to know it. We had a good laugh when just minutes later all was disclosed to him as well.
We too enjoyed the episode very much, that is until the very ending which we found absurd & unrealistic. Keith said the writers must have gone on strike 10 minutes before the end of the script.
-
Done four pages, and shall now take a break. Mr. Spirtas is coming later than planned - they had a power outage in his neighborhood. So, he'll be here about one-thirty and we'll go eat and work. When I get back, I'll finish three more pages and perhaps end the chapter I'm on.
-
Where to eat, that is the question.
-
Should I introduce him to the joys of the Kansas City Barbecue?
-
Should we go to Casa Vega?
-
Art's Deli? Vivian's?
-
Only time will tell and time ain't talkin'.
I've been thinking about this bed frame.
I think it will look very nice in your place.
-
Well, he's scheduled for a green-clothes day - that's regular registers. However, with the modern non-sexist work ethic of equal-work-for-equal-pay-unless-it's-too-tough-for-a-girl, he might be called upon if one of the regular wranglers goes AWOL.
I hope he took warm clothes to work.
-
Thanks to all of your dear DRs for your good wishes. I endured my medical test, and the results were A+ positive!! :)
Glad to hear that Singdaw's procedure went well. Hope Jeanne's visit is also going well. I get to hear my annual cholesterol lecture this afternoon.
-
And because I like Liz and Rock together, I'll add THE MIRROR CRACK'D.
-
And because I love Angela Lansbury and John Wayne, I'll add THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD.
-
Because I like Stephen Boyd and Peter O'Toole, I'll add THE BIBLE. . .in the beginning.
-
As noted previously, SLEUTH counts as an all-star cast. ;)
-
Did anyone mention Rat Race yet?
-
Wikipedia's listing of all-star casts includes:
* The Hollywood Revue of 1929 (and similar films) (1929)
* Ziegfeld Follies (1946)
* Around the World in Eighty Days (1956)
* The Longest Day (1962)
* The Great Escape (1963)
* The V.I.P.s (1963)
* The Yellow Rolls-Royce (1964)
* The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965)
* The Bible: In The Beginning (1966)
* It's a mad mad mad mad world (1966)
* Casino Royale (1967)
* Oh! What a Lovely War (1969)
* Battle of Britain (1969)
* Murder on the Orient Express (1974)
* The Towering Inferno (1974)
* A Bridge Too Far (1977)
* True Romance (1993)
* Ocean's Eleven (2001)
This list followed a discussion in which other all-star films were named.
I think "Poseidon Adventure" might also join the above list.
-
As I like Liz with Dick, I'll add THE V.I.P.s.
-
Because I can, I'll add 1967's CASINO ROYALE (and I really do like it).
"Gosford Park" has no lack of names, either.
I hate it that NBC is wasting two new episodes of "Chuck" on a Thursday night when I was used to seeing it on Mondays.
I'm sick of network airdate-hopping I am.
Actually, the network is trying out the show in these timeslots to see if the show would attract a greater audience somewhere other than Monday. As it already has a season episode order (if the strike ends), why not experiment with it in other timeslots?
Just dropping in - nothing to say, but I wanted to post something.
-
Had a nice lunch out today, and the gray skies cleared to blue, and it ended up being quite beautiful.
-
I began my viewing this afternoon with last night's RENO 911! I thought Tony Hawk was very funny. The rest of the show was OK, but those scenes were funny.
-
So, the sky cleared and we had blue skies - for ten minutes. Then it rained. Then the skies cleared and we had blue skies - for thirty minutes. Now it's raining again. Make up your mind already, that's what I say.
Page Eight Harry, Hermione, and Semus (with their broomsticks) Dance!!!
-
And that concludes the Harry Potter Dances.
The next time I get to do one will be a new theme for the year.
-
Next, I finished the gay bashing episode from the JAG that I had begun last night and didn't finish. Turns out that Petty Officer Tiner wasn't gay after all (though I refused to be convinced).
-
I watched two additional episodes of JAG, one of which bore an uncomfortable resemblance to the movie EXECUTIVE DECISION.
-
I have six more JAG episodes to go, and I should be able to watch at least two more before prime time begins tonight.
-
I skimmed very quickly through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Nothing of interest for me today.
-
I concluded my afternoon by starting PROJECT RUNWAY. I only for the first segment watched - the first 15 minutes or so. I'll finish it when I go back down. Should be an interesting challenge with that material.
MUSLIM CLERIC ISSUES FATWA AGAINST BOLLYWOOD STAR FOR WAX FIGURE
(http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,325292,00.html)
Bollywood star Salman Khan had a fatwa issued against him for allowing Madame Tussauds in London to make his image in wax, the Daily Mail reported.
Mufti Salim Ahmad Qasmi, a Muslim cleric in India, issued the fatwa, saying the statue is illegal according to the Sharia, which forbids depictions of all living creatures, Mohammed in particular. A mufti is a Muslim scholar who interprets the Sharia, or the religious law of Islam; a fatwa is a legal opinion or ruling handed down by an Islamic scholar.
Khan, star of more than 50 Bollywood movies, unveiled the statue himself last week and described it as an honor. (Bollywood is the informal term popularly used for the Mumbai-based Hindi-language film industry in India.) Major celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie have also had their wax likenesses displayed at Madame Tussauds.
The Dioband Seminary which the mufti runs has already issued a fatwa against Khan for dancing at a Hindu festival last month.
The Indian actor says his "bad boy" image is to blame as fellow Muslim and even bigger star Shah Rukh Khan is also in the wax museum and hasn't been singled out.
Everyone must be on the road right now....except those of us here on the left coast who still have more than two hours to go in our work day.
Lunch today was delicious:
Shrimp bisque
Shrimp scampi, steamed vegetables and herbed rice.
(And for those "inclined" toward such nitpickiness, Wikipedia says: The word "scampi" is often construed as that style of preparation, not an ingredient, hence the seemingly redundant "shrimp scampi" or the seemingly impossible "chicken scampi". The "style" referred to is the item being cooked in butter and garlic).
It was rather tasty....shrimpy though it was.
It was a pleasure watching HAWAII FIVE-O last week. The last episode in the set was the last episode of the season, but no different from any other last episode: no cliffhangers, no artificial drama. It concluded a two part episode, and that was that.
I LONG for those old days. The cliffhanger stuff is, in most cases, so unnecessary to get me to tune in again next season.
When Mr. Rogers ended his show, he did the same thing...just a regular episode, nothing special, no acknowledgement of it being the last show...mainly since it's in perpetual repeats and little kids might not understand a "last episode" but then see regular episode the next day.
I forgot another one and this film is not what you call stellar but it is fun cheese!
Young Doctors in Love!
It had a lot of soap stars in it
Some of the people in it included Jackie Zeman, Sean Young, Dabny Coleman, Ted McGinley, Crystal Benard, Michael, McKean. Ed Begley Jr and many stars of the time from many of the soaps especially General Hospital
Another show that had some stellar power was Soapdish but not on the same level as some of hte ones mentioned today
I, too, have always loved MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS. I've read DEATH ON THE NILE, but don't recall ever seeing the adaptation. Must add that to my (lengthy) queue.
I have done the play MURDER ON THE NILE. I played the character of Canon Ambrose Pennefather. First, in the book and later in the film, that character was Hercule Poirot.
Young Doctors in Love was kind of a precursor for what some would do as the 1980s went on
I sat down at the piano to do some work (completely rivising one of the act two songs from start to finish - keeping occasional lyric lines but not many) and now it's eight o'clock. How did that happen? Making some soup to keep me warm and now shall attempt to watch a DVD.
-
I watched three more JAG episodes. Three to go though I may not get them finished tomorrow morning. We'll see.
-
Of interest to DR MBarnum, one of your favorites - Kent McCord - played a judge in a couple of the episodes I've watched today.
-
UGLY BETTY had a good episode to end this cycle of episodes. Very satisfying and enjoyable.
-
SUPERNATURAL had a very tense rerun with a rogue hunter turned into a vampire after Sam. Some really scary moments, and a very sad end to the "daddy" vampire whose family had all been taken from him.
-
And I completed my evening watching the 10 p.m. CHUCK. Again, a very satisfying way to end the first half of their season. I really loved this episode.
I'll have the 8 p.m. episode to watch at some point this weekend.
-
I forgot to mention that I did finish PROJECT RUNWAY. I was absolutely delighted with the designer who was sent packing. Has never been one of my favorites, and in the last couple of weeks, I had really grown to despise this person.
I agree with DR RonP. I don't like when the switch days.
I'm all for getting the show (CHUCK) more viewers.
I know it was the one with joe trying to get a job. And his "boss" had a wife who had allison help find their daughter.
Well, if you watched ANY NBC shows this week, there were promos for it. In fact, they were special promos featuring cast members that were quite clever and droll. If I wasn't already a fan, these promos would have made me check out the show.
I can't believe that regular viewers/fans wouldn't have been going out of their way to check to see when the show would turn up again. I certainly was interested to see when ALL of my favorites would be back on.
