I like DR Elmore’s family’s tradition of the two pies, with the addition of the mince pie. It don’t get no better than that.
Were they still authentic mince meat pies then? We had them, too, and I was the kid who always loved them. But I have no idea now which ours were. Which sadly means I have no idea whether I’ve had a real mince meat pie. And isn’t that a fine kettle of fish.

She called them "mince meat," but there was no meat in them at all. Much as I loved my Aunt Dorothy, I really detested them. My mother, who was an erratic cook, made excellent pie crusts and her pies - whether apple, cherry, pumpkin, pecan, or banana cream (my Dad's fave) - were either prize winners or fit only for the garbage. There was never an in-between.
Jennifer, sorry you can't see your family as much as you'd like. Cold weather certainly makes distancing more difficult.
I liked your idea of a book club with your niece. Do you do Zoom (or other) visits with them?
A Very Happy Birthday to DR KevinH!! :D

No, I haven't done any zoom visits. I have done facetime with my youngest niece. But she doesn't really like doing it. So we haven't done it in months.
I have been seeing them twice a week. But only for like 15 minutes at a time. I am just worried about what happens when it gets colder.
The book club was going well as I was keeping pace with my niece. But once she had to return her library book I ended up having to finish my copy and give mine to her. And she hasn't read in more than a week. She said that she would finish this weekend. So i'm hoping that she does that.
DR Jane the book that my niece chose was Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson. It's a YA mystery.
When I saw that photo of the PY-anny on top of the car, my thought was that ONE too many auditioners had asked the accompanist to transpose his song.....
Wae-Ling told me that she is going to cook a turkey at home this year. Her first on her own. She's been training at my house for years. I'm sure she'll do very well.
My son has to work on Thanksgiving, so we've cancelled our gathering.
The new Michael Connelly has mentioned the pandemic. Very up to date.

If your niece ever finishes the first book might you read the rest of the series together?

You were discussing the book as you read it until waiting until the end. That sounds like great fun. Too bad she couldn't renew it instead of returning it.

I think so. So today I saw her and asked her when we should have our next book club meeting? And she was like "oh i thought we were done with that since you already finished the book." :) I told her I took notes and would discuss it with her when she finished.
I think that we will continue the series if she likes this one.
Happy Birthday, Kevin!

Don’t you wish you were traveling?

Tomorrow (Sunday) night, Hallmark Channel will be premiering their first holiday movie to feature a male couple.
DR JohnG, did Mephisto have subtitles? I wouldn't mind seeing it again, and Amazon seems vague about subtitles.

Yes, but some of it is dubbed into German. I think some of the cast is Hungarian, others German.
Happy Birthday to DR KevinH!
Just had an hour-long telephonic conversation with a good friend from college that I had lost touch with. Felt so good!!
What have you been doing in lieu of traveling? Watching foreign films? Travelogues? Going nuts?
No news here.
I am ushering later today for a John Denver tribute concert. I always liked his music, never saw him in concert. It'll be a bit nostalgic and fun.
I was trying to teach the DH how to use Facebook. It was a frustrating experience for both of us. ;)
In another hour or so, we are going to brave the supermarket for Thanksgiving supplies. Pray for Rosemary's baby.
Tuesday night's opera is Marnie on metopera.org. I know the Hitchcock version has been discussed here recently. I hear both bad and good about the opera.

Also, DR John G., I now have my own copy of Avoca Soups.

Tomorrow, Nov 22, is the feast day of Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of music.
I spoke to my brother Randy. There's been no further word on the Ohio property inquiry, and that's a bummer.
Here goes nothing...
Alban Berg
Arnold Schoenberg
Igor Stravinsky
Benjamin Britten
Kurt Weill
Maurice Ravel
Leonard Bernstein
Gian Carlo Menotti
George Gershwin
I know I'm leaving out other great composers, but for an off-the-cuff list of favorites as I sit here typing, this is what came out of my fingers.
I did try to include favorite pieces. In a few cases, that's easy. For others, there'd be no end to it.
I love the lists so far and would take favorites from each, so I will just add a few more:
Ralph Vaughan Williams
Stephen Sondheim
Sergei Prokofiev
Aram Khachaturian
Heitor Villa-Lobos
Sergei Rachmaninoff
I just got notification that my two Hansels and two Gretels are in my mailbox. That's amazing, since they were originally estimated to arrive by the 25th, then that changed to definitely the 23rd, and here they are on the 21st.
You know something I love? I'll tell you. I love it when I automatically check Amazon for something, find it okay and very nearly buy it, but then I think to look on eBay and I find even better deals on the same brand new items for even less money, with shipping included, and they get here just as fast if not faster than Amazon sometimes. That's something I love.
And now if you'll excuse me, I need to put shoes on and make a little trip to the mailbox.
Mephisto is thrilling. I've been interrupted too many times while watching, but both the movie and the central performance are as brilliant as I remember. And the parallels to today are scary.

This is why Amazon has effectively taken over the world.

Thanks, DR Jane! The supermarket was deserted, and there was no line to check out. Huzzah!
one big, long song.
One of my most favorite overheard audience comments was a concert-goer, emerging from a complete performance of Handel's Messiah, exclaiming, "Boy, that was a long song!"
Fingers crossed you figure it out.

And then there is Kristen Stewart’s gay Christmas movie, THE HAPPIEST SEASON.
