Title: THE TOWERING NOTES

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both towering and an inferno, and now it is time for you to post until the towering cows come home.

One quick correction in today's notes. Ava Gardner was not in The Towering Inferno, (it was Jennofer Jones) but she was in City On Fire another all star disaster film that was shot in Montreal. They built a street to burn it down for the film's climax. And oh yes I was an extra in the film but it a very quick shot.

Forgot that The Tony Nominaitons were out. (Really don't care) I am glad however that Judy Kaye was nominated. I saw her in the play and she was wonderful. I don't know about the other nominees but she really deserved the nomination.

Interesting The Caine Mutiny Court Marshall received only 1 nomination. It posted its closing notice right away. Did the producers really think multiple nomiantions would keep the show open? They probably would incure more loses.

Tarzan received 1 nomination (didn't know it opened) and Lestat only 2. Could this mean that they also will close soon?

Despite the millions I presume spent on pushing these two musicals for awards they basically walked away empty handed.

I just stopped in to say hello, I must pack for my little trip to Des Moines - that's easy, something to wear in the car and a nice outfit I can wear to present in the morning at the seminar.  I'm on a panel, that's alot easier than presenting on my own.

Good morning, all, and a special good morning to DR Cillaliz!  This is short since I'm heading off to have the few hairs left on my head cut, then I have a jaunt to Royland, followed by a trek to the Wall Street area for a meeting (UGH!!!!).

More to follow.

I don't know about Lestat, our own Jose could speak to that point, but Disney won't be closing Tarzan any time soon. Even though it got mediocre reviews and one Tony nod it has a very big advance, enough to keep it running through the summer and into the fall. Remember that Aida also got mixed reviews and ended up running for four years, paying back the investment and turning a profit. I know that Tarzan cost much more but I think Tarzan will be at the Richard Rodgers for a long time.

Regarding the talk yesterday about the replacement Tony award and the fact that there was nothing, it turns out the award is only for leading roles so the Spelling Bee replacement wouldn't have been eligible anyway since Fogler won for Best Featured Actor.

It sounds like there were lots of productive hours in the day yesterday for many of the DR's.

I answered the phone at the theatre last night and listened to an irate lady go on and on for several minutes about our obsolete website and why the hell don't we ever update it and what's the deal....when she finally stopped talking, I told her that the site she had bookmarked was a geocities site that we hadn't used for nearly five years, and that ALL of our advertising (including the brochure she had in her hand) pointed her to the CURRENT site, and she might try checking that.  Then she hung up....or maybe I did. :)

Titular!

Hehehehehe.

Rita: Well if you do all that, what do I do?

Rockwell: I will be vice president and secretary of Rita Marlowe Productions, but you will be the titular head of the company.

Rita (Miss Jayne Mansfield) then makes a sound that is almost humanly impossible....but is hilarious!

Re: American Idol last night.

I also think Taylor will definitely be in the finals.  I don't really care which of the guys make it. But I would like Katharine to go forward. I really really liked her "Over The Rainbow".  For Taylor I actually liked "Dancing In The Dark" (is that the name of the song?).

I'm surprised that Paula did not gush for Elliot as much as usual. I think if the judges had done last night (what they did for him last week) then he would probably have moved forward.  But I'm not so sure, especially with them praising Katharine's one song as the best of the season. Comments like that usually go far.

And re: them most likely renewing ONE TREE HILL and not EVERWOOD. I like EVERWOOD a lot. But I can understand why the network would want to keep TREE HILL.  It has a huge teen star (Chad Michael Murray).  And I guess the new network wants to have a shot at a younger fan base.

MBarnum, thanks for reporting on the fellow from Heatwave. An underrated band, and that guy's voice was one of the smoothest, gentlest in all of R&B. On "Always and Forever," it sounds like he's just sitting right on your shoulder singing.

Their greatest hits package has a lot of gems, but if their LP entitled "Central Heating" is available on CD, I definitely recommend it.

My BK question of the day:

And who was the biggest disappointment?

Certainly Patricia Neal and Shirley Jones would be at the top of the list.  But I liked working with almost everyone.  In the early years, I can't say there was a disappointment - everyone I worked with was a pro and really great to me.  I mean, I was in an episode of The Super (is that on Michael Shayne's list - the things that come back to you), a short-lived series from Rob Reiner, and I detested Richard Castellano, although he was fine to me personally - but he was sort of a jerk to everyone else.

I felt that both Clive Davis and Paula let Elliott down in their bland song choices for him. The other two semifinalists were given standards by Clive/Randy/Simon that they could put their own interpretation on while still dealing with a very recognizable song. Elliott's song choices by them seemed underwhelming. And then he topped it with an underwhelming song choice of his own.

I think recognizability factor is very important.

Buckle Up and Wear Thick Underwear!

Quote
TAMPA, Fla. - A 44-year-old woman escaped serious injury from a gunshot Sunday thanks to her seat belt and a thick bra strap, authorities said.

Robin Key, 44, of Riverview, Fla., was shot through the windshield of the car she was riding in Sunday. She said she felt a searing pain in her shoulder.

Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies said a .38-caliber bullet smashed through the windshield then bounced off Key's shoulder — thanks to a seat belt and a thick bra strap.

The copper-jacketed slug landed in her lap.

"It's a big bullet, but you had all those forces acting against it," Hillsborough sheriff's spokesman J.D. Callaway told the St. Petersburg Times. "It's very rare that something like that occurs. She's very lucky. You know, we're just glad she came out OK."

Key said she didn't know why anyone would shoot her. Sheriff's deputies arrested two men in connection with the shooting several hours later.

Authorities said they do not have a motive for the shooting.

You're right, DR Ben, about it being star roles that are eligible for the replacement Tony. I remember now reading in VARIETY last year when the award was being added that it was there as a lure to get big stars to come to Broadway to replace in a show with the idea that they might earn a Tony for their trouble.

And I'm sure plays and musicals are equally considered as well as males and females in the same category. There certainly were enough contenders for them to have the category this year.

However, I do remember one stipulation. A show can only submit once for a replacement in a certain role. Once it's submitted, that role can never be submitted again, even if someone terrific comes in later.

And NO SMOKING!!

Quote
DENVER, N.C. - A man taking a break from painting burned down his house after trying to snuff out a cigarette in a bowl of paint thinner.

Stevie Spencer had put the bowl on his coffee table before taking a smoke break about 10 p.m. Saturday.

"I forgot paint thinner was in the bowl," Spencer said. "I thought it was water."

The fire from the paint thinner ignited some papers, Spencer said. He got his wife out of the house, then tried to extinguish the flames with a hose. Spencer suffered minor injuries.

Fire Chief Jay Flynn said the house was too far gone to save it when firefighters arrived.

Towering Inferno department:  I saw some exteriors of this being filmed.  My girlfriend at the time and I went to SF to visit her brother and we were walking down a street when we noticed some big krieg lights, and headed off in that direction.  Lo and behold we walked around a corner and there was Steve McQueen in a fireman's outfit, standing right next to a sawhorse that had the street blocked off.  There weren't even that many people standing around.  There was a big crane with the camera and lots of production people, but we only saw McQueen, in terms of stars.

If only he had said "point to it" department:   I've been having a blast watching some kinescopes of late 50s tv dramas and there was a jaw-dropping commercial moment in one of them.  Picture this:  the scene opens on two destitute and barely clad young children walking through a third world shanty town.  One assumes we are watching a Christian Children's Fund or somesuch spot.  The sonorous tones of John Cameron Swayze start talking about world poverty and how the lack of power is harming people worldwide.  Cut to a studio shot of Swayze in front of a backdrop featuring a beautiful cloud-speckled sky.  What is he shilling?  Ready???  Westinghouse Atomic Power Plants!!

But, wait, that's not the best part.  In a truly mind-boggling denouement, he picks up a small container and states, "With only this small shoebox full of uranium, we could have enough power--peaceful power--to guarantee well-being for the entire world."

So, dear HHW-ers, I add to my staple of catch phrases, "With only this small shoebox of uranium..." which can be followed by any pronouncement of your choosing.  :)

Last night's "American Idol":

I totally agree that Clive Davis and Paula Abdul sabotaged Elliott with lackluster songs, although he aquitted himself admirably.

Three solid, if not "special", performances.  That's a better track record last night than either of the other two.

I didn't care for anything the other two did, including the "special" songs that were just oh-so-ootzily presented.  Don't tell me Katherine didn't have someone "stage" her "Over the Rainbow" and tell her when to toss her hair or hold her head back and yodel a few lyrics.

I think Katherine's is the weakest talent, yet, to reach the semi-finals.

Taylor's a lock...and will be the next American Idol.

As for Elliott....I voted 330 times for him last night!

Just a feeling I have that the judges (other than Paula) and producers would prefer a male-female face-off in the finals. Simon as much as told Elliott he wouldn't be around. There's a new cell phone wrinkle.  Now people don't have to turn them off - they can put them on "vibrate" - I've now sat near people on several recent occasions where they open their stupid cell phones to see who's vibrating them, and of course these cells all light up when they do so, which is almost as distracting as it ringing - and then some of these mongoloids TEXT MESSAGE their idiot pals while they're sitting there in the audience.  I kid you not, Virginia.

I'm enjoying the book much more than I expected.  It got a 4 star review this morning in the Post or News, and I'm looking forward to it.  I'm not a Catholic, so I find the premise possible ande the brouhaha quite funny.  But, then, they condemned BABY DOLL as well!

The Catholic League condemned EARTH VS THE SPIDER, as well. I just don't understand them...a June Kenney movie...condemned.

BTW, I'd never seen anyone handle the going-off of a cell phone during a performance with such grace as Rebecca showed when that happened.  Shocking that people don't know to turn off their cell phones in an intimate cabaret setting.

How did she handle it?

I remember being excrutiatingly embarrassed when I forgot to turn off my cellphone and it went off during the middle of Pastor's sermon one Sunday... and of course it was on the "loud" setting and of course it was lost at the bottom of my bag and of course I was sitting third pew center, right in front of the pulpit!  It seemed like hours before I could find the darn thing.   :-[

While I searched for it my Pastor kindly regaled the congregation with the tale of when he forgot and left his cell phone on and it went off in the middle of a wedding.

I always check my phone 2 or 3 times now to be sure it's off.!

1.Frats
2.Hippies

There is no chance of Tarzan announcing their closing.  I know they have advance sales up the wazoo and I'm sure they'll be fine for quite a while.  Aida only got a few noms, missed getting a best show nomination and ran for four years on the power of the mouse.  Lestat is another story.  It may run through Labor Day, but probably not much longer.
Title: Re:THE TOWERING NOTES
Post by: TPunk on May 17, 2006, 11:33:13 AM
I don't know about Lestat, our own Jose could speak to that point, but won't be closing Tarzan any time soon. Even though it got mediocre reviews and one Tony nod it has a very big advance, enough to keep it running through the summer and into the fall. Remember that Aida also got mixed reviews and ended up running for four years, paying back the investment and turning a profit. I know that Tarzan cost much more but I think Tarzan will be at the Richard Rodgers through the end of 2006 at least.

I should have kept reading.  ;D

I have no interest in seeing the film of The Da Vinci Code, but not because of the brouhaha - it's simply that Ron Howard is an awful director and I will not see one of his pretentious, overblown, bloated films ever again.  When he learns to be simple, as he was when he made the endearing and well-directed Splash, then I'll give him another try.

SURVIVOR, TAR, and THE APPRENTICE had their lowest ever ratings this past season. I think all of these shows, particularly the latter two, have peaked and are now on the downside of their lives as series.

I can understand wanting to rest THE APPRENTICE seeing as its fall has been the steepest, but I'm thinking out of sight, out of mind. I'm guessing the run in 2007 will be its last.

I really liked the idea of CBS alternating a fall season of TAR and a spring season of SURVIVOR so as to keep both shows going but maybe not quite as much of either. Sorry the network didn't see it this way.

I think TAR will run into trouble competing with EXTREME MAKEOVER on ABC and pro football on NBC.

Back from a really good jog - brisk all the way and went the extra two blocks - that should take care of any of last night's overeating (which wasn't much - just the eight onion rings), and tonight I'll be eating very lightly.  The chocolate licorice was the perfect thing to buy last Sunday - I eat three pieces a day, no fat grams at all, and considerably under 100 calories and it satisfies my little lunchtime hunger pang and it satisfies my sweet tooth.

The BOSTON LEGAL season finale was fine. Some mild surprises, and I enjoyed the two major cases being covered. I did notice that they're using soft focus on Candice Bergen's close-ups now, and while they were going back and forth between Robert Forrester (in sharp, clear focus) and Candy (in blurry, gauzy focus), it was VERY distracting.

I'm assuming Parker Posey is joining the cast as a regular next season, but I really hadn't read anything about this.

I finally broke down and bought the anniversary edition of BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S. Amazon had it on sale, and it came today, so I put it in and watched the first 25 minutes of it. Yes, it's a much cleaner print (pristine actually), but I wouldn't say the sharpness is any better and might actually not be quite as sharp as the last release. What a joyful picture to watch, however.

The problem with Breakfast at Tiffany's' new DVD is its color - it's much sharper than the previous DVD but the color is a pale shadow of what it should be - it's closer on the old DVD, but even that wasn't what it should have looked like.

The Super is in my list, bit I have so little information on this show. Not even a photo or an episode list.

I'd have the titles on the scripts, which are all in storage and hard to get to.  The only thing I remember about If I Had A Million was Peter Kastner and Joseph Wiseman, who were the two people I worked with - and that we shot on the Santa Monica Pier.  I don't even remember who the director was.  I do believe they aired it, though.

The one I just handed in - I have no idea. It has to be greenlit by the network first. (I won't ask for "Greenlight Vibes" as there are so many more Vibe-worthy events going on at HHW. But if you have Vibes to spare...)

The one that starts shooting next week will be broadcast at Thanksgiving. It stars the lovely Miss Molly Ringwald.
BTW - My plans to do errands and relax my aching back didn't get far. I got a call on my cell from the production office (of the one that's about to shoot) asking for some minor quick fixes. So I had to come home to do them.

Hi all, I decided to bring my computer after all and have found a wireless connection so here I am.  My mother was SOOO surprised to see me show up at her PEO meeting today. She had no idea they were honoring her for her 60 years in PEO - an organization that means a lot to her.  She had lovely flowers and a lovely tribute was read to her.  I am so glad I went up there today.

Plus, on my way to see my mom, I got an offer on the house.  It isn't the greatest, but it's not bad considering everything that's going on in Sioux City that make the housing market ...I countered...we'll know tomorrow

I used to have one of those phones that vibrate.  One evening I called myself ten times.
All right, I'll bite ...

In which pocket did you keep that phone?

Here's a question for anyone who uses IMDB. For the past few weeks if you go to search someone or some movie, the button you click on no longer says "Go" or "Search, " but rather it says, "Sul."

What does this mean?

I watched the rest of BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S when I returned to the home theater. Then, I watched the documentary about the making of the film and also listened to some of the commentary.

The producer stupidly said that singing "Moon River" was the first time Audrey had sung in a film. Obviously, he knew nothing about FUNNY FACE.

ALIAS was a trifle better than the previous two weeks' shows were, but that's not saying much.

We've seen Sydney Bristow kick hugely muscled bodyguards and trained combatants for five years now, and yet we're supposed to believe she was at the mercy of Arvin Sloane's choke hold and had to be rescued by her husband? Rubbish!

LOST used an unusual kind of flashback tonight instead of the usual backstory, and it was just wonderful. Of course, SO many more mysteries opened up from what we were shown, but the show continues to be amazing.

I quite enjoyed the show tonight, especially the very touching recap of Elliott's Richmond reunion, and you could see it was not something he took for granted.

Of course, I didn't enjoy the results. When I saw how close the vote totals were, I had a tiny, thin ray of hope that something wonderful might be happening, but such was not the case.

Someone ordered a couple of CDs on the 9th.  Yesterday I get an e-mail asking me where they are.  Now, I don't know if it's just this generation, but a week isn't a long time to wait for something, is it?  I shipped out on the 12th, three days after the order came in.  This is all new, of course, and thanks to amazon.  In days of olde, it was always two to four weeks.

I figure 10 to 15 days is quite good... I have seen far worse time lengths from places like Amazon, Target and one local business that shall remain nameless....

Sadly I see that all the time at work. I do not even get up when the come to the desk yapping on their cell. I find it quite rude when they do that. To me when you come to the desk you should be ready for prompt service. I find cells to be very rude and I have kicked a number of people out due to loud conversations on their cells.

Back from rehearsal, supper, and rehearsal.  I'm zonked and I have to once again be up quite early for tomorrow's class.  We spent most of the afternoon with the pianist, going over songs and making sure he's comfortable playing everything.  It's starting to sound good.  After dinner, Tammy rehearsed with the fellow she plays opposite - it's the first time I've had to do actual work with the actors and in twenty minutes I was able to get Tammy to understand exactly how to play hers, and the fellow is coming along, too, now that he gets what I need.

I just don't understand the brouhaha with the Roman Catholic Church and the Da Vinci Code.  What part of "fiction" are they having trouble with?!

It's make-believe!

I am still perplexed as to why some are so outraged with the book. It is an interesting tale and I have enjoyed reading it.

I am a bit wary of seeing the movie version.

Script just went in! My back is hurting like krazy. But it's done. Now I need to clean up around here -- when I'm working the way I've been working the past week or two - everything winds up on the floor. It looks like a hurricane hit. I look like a hurricane hit.
I think that before I do the BORING clean-up, I'll go out and do some errands which have gone undone.

Congrats on completing your sript Maria!!  I send good reception vibes when you submit it!

I started watching and got about 10 minutes into it when my friend Margo called me...it's quite rare for her to call me that late in the evening, so I knew it had to be important so I turned on my VCR to tape the rest of the episode.  Now that the conversation is finally over, I'm going to watch the rest of it.  Then I'm going to bed.  So I'm going to do the Wussburger thing and say good night, now.

Good night, now! 8)

My guess was some kind of demon.
