Well, you've read the notes, the notes were very September-like, and now it is time for you to post until the Sockeye cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: NOMENCLATURE!
-
I really like these initials. I'd forgotten about them again - and these just popped into my head and I think we're all going to have a very good time with them. And here we go:
Jacques Demy, director of The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg.
-
John Dillinger, criminal.
-
Jacqueline Du Pre - world-famous cellist.
-
Jean Doumanian, producer of several Woody Allen films.
-
...And continuing last night's/this morning's picture parade...
I believe I prefer this one to the last one I posted last night... ;D

-
And this reminded me of James Darren, who was on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," as Vic Fontaine, the holographic lounge singer.
And James Darren from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" reminded me of James Doohan of the original "Star Trek" series!

Good morning, all! A year ago today I was writing a lot of the new orchestrations and parts for THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X. That officebuilding of 27th Street was very empty and rather spooky all that day.
For today, I've got a lot of work to accomplish that I was unable to finish yesterday. I also have to order tickets for the NYMF shows I want to see this year.
And that's my day.

I finally got that pesky front yard mowed this morning. It was a bit damp, but I got it done. Thank goodness that chore is completed for a week or two. (No rain scheduled for the next five days at least.)
-
I've gotten a lot done this morning. After mowing the grass, I read the morning paper while eating my oatmeal. I thought I might be too hot after mowing to want hot cereal, but I wasn't.

But what about after those five days? ;)

Jeremy Denk, classical pianist and blogger
-
Next, I watched the last episode of LIFE which I left for today, and got that review finished and uploaded. That was a relief to get it done early this morning.
-
Jeremy Denk, classical pianist and blogger
Doh!
*Although, I'm taking a holiday from the Initials, so I wasn't going to post him anyway. ;)
-
Got my morning workout accomplished (even though I felt I had already worked out enough pushing that lawnmower). Still, it felt good to get both accomplished during the same morning.
-
On TV tonight!
THE CLOSER!!!
Raising the Bar (the new legal series has gotten scathing reviews from every site I've visited that reviews new TV. There is a minor gay character who is part of the proceedings, but I'm not going to add another hour of TV to my soon-to-be-heavy TV rotation.)
-
John Dos Passos was done, I think, by FJL, way back when, and should be added to the list. John Darling is not on the list. And neither is:
Jean Desailly - great French actor and star of Truffaut's The Soft Skin.
-
Today I'll be working on a new animated film from Lionsgate/Marvel Comics: NEXT AVENGERS which are young offshoots of some of the comic's superhero family. It's on Blu-ray, so I'm anxious to see what kind of quality this kind of animation will have in high definition.
-
Jackie Davis-referee who saved Jimmy Doyle's life by stopping one of his fights that left him with major head injuries.
-
Jimmy (Popeye) Doyle---Gene Hackman in "The French Connection"

You know? There are such things as e-mails and IMs, or even cell phones and text messages.
;)
*And, yes, I'm being a stick in the mud about the Initials today (well, and last week too). I blame the ice cream and gelato. ;D

Monday morning greetings! My friend's appearance on The Today Show was upstaged by coverage of Gustav, so she walked over to our corner and we had breakfast together at the Europa Cafe across the street. We figured we'd last seen each other in the School of Music building at Michigan in 1974. And our chat was as if 34 years had not elapsed. When I email her the photo Richard took of the 2 of us, I'm also going to send her the link to this here site.
-
Well, if this helps....
Post #132
john darling----character(one of the kids) in "Peter Pan"
-
That darn Gustav - he ruins everything
-
Reminder: One name per post.
Jeremy Darling, one of the kids on the tv show DIRTY SEXY MONEY
Juliet Darling, the daughter on DIRTY SEXY MONEY
-
:)
-
And then there was Post 149...
John Dos Passos----author.
*Which appeared directly below a post by DR FJL.
-
Hopefully we'll have an updated list soon. I see no reason to be a stick in the mud about the game - I would hope it's fun. No need for IMs or text messages (I don't ever do them) - macchus and I tease each other sometimes, not much, and it's in fun, too.
John Gregory Dunne - author of the excellent True Confessions.
-
Riffing on Joan and Jennifer Darling:
John and Jane Darling - respectively brother and daughter to Wendy Darling in Peter Pan.
Again - Reminder: One name per post.
;D
-
And here's one our stick in the mud should have done:
Jeffrey Denman - B'way performer and about to be star of the B'way version of White Christmas.
-
Jeffery Deaver - novelist
-
Again - Reminder: One name per post.
;D
Bitch-slap me, baby. I was so excited on riffing that I forgot!

Well, regardless of the sticks or the mud, you could always keep and update your own lists.
-
Has anyone mentioned the fine British actress Janie Dee (who won all sorts of awards at MTC with Ayckbourn's COMIC POTENTIAL)
-
And here's one our stick in the mud should have done:
Jeffrey Denman - B'way performer and about to be star of the B'way version of White Christmas.
<nod>
Well, I guess I could give hints such as....
"Mezzo-Soprano who took over the role of Rosina in Bartlett Sher's production of Il Barbiere at The Met after Diana Damrau."
-
J.D. stands for Juris Doctor, the basic law degree
J.D. also stands for Jewish Doctor, the basic Jewish mother-in-law degree

Richard has just left to attend a noonday service at St. Mary's and I'm chilling here at the apt. until the cleaning person shows up, then I'll vamoose to Starbucks. We can leave our luggage (all packed) until we head to LGA at about 2pm.
-
On a more serious note... I've just been checking on in my friends, so to speak, over on Facebook, and never realized just how many of them have ties to New Orleans... :-\
Let's hope the next couple of days are filled with stories of lucky breaks, crazy flukes and common sense in regards to Hurricane Gustav and the residents of the Gulf Coast.
-
I'm glad folks get a day off because of Labor Day, but I hate that there is NO MAIL and NO UPS!
:p
-
I also had actor Jerome Dempsey, which is not on the list.
No need for sticks in muds. This is just a jabfest.
Just curious: FJL, did you post John Dos Passos before I did?
-
Thank you, all, for the travel vibes for today.
-
I'm heading down now to clean the dining room. That's one chore I didn't have time to squeeze in earlier this morning, so I'll do it now before I start working on lunch.

DR Ginny - I'm so glad you were able to catch up with your friend this morning. And also I love it when you reconnect with someone after a period of time, and it's like no time has passed at all.
-And, actually, I have yet to turn the TV on this morning...
-
Jane Dentinger - mystery author of Who Dropped Peter Pan? a thinly-veiled amusing fiction of a certain director's tenure at Paper Mill.
-
And I did find a program yesterday that does a fine job converting and recording DVD's it is called CONVERTX, if any DR is looking for such a thing.
-
Riffing on Joan and Jennifer Darling:
John and Jane Darling - respectively brother and daughter to Wendy Darling in Peter Pan.
I suspect, since James Barrie was a proper Edwardian gentleman, that Jane's last name was her father's and not her mother's maiden name.
-
Well, if DR elmore ends up heading back to the ER again today, well... ;)
I think you're already covered for the month, DR Jose!
-
Jane Dentinger - mystery author of Who Dropped Peter Pan? a thinly-veiled amusing fiction of a certain director's tenure at Paper Mill.
Bobby Jo, and the reason for a confidential clause at Papermill, I hear!

DR Jose, I mentioned your name to her and she said she'd heard of you! She and I also discovered that we were both at the Barbara Cook concert at the Met in January of 2006.
Special thanks to you for spending so much time with us during our visit. We thoroughly enjoyed the day at MoMA and our mini-tour of UWS sweet shops!

Cool! I'm famous! :P
And, you're very welcome. You and Richard were great "guests" and friends.
-
"Great Belgian bass-baritone"
*His last name could be an issue, but in some "style sheets", it could work. ;)
-
...And continuing last night's/this morning's picture parade...
I believe I prefer this one to the last one I posted last night... ;D

Forgive my ignorance, but has Nick been in the Broadway production? Nice hands.
-
"The original "Second Man" in the original production of Kiss Me, Kate"
-
Jean-Pierre Dorleac - award-winning costume designer, who did tons of TV and Somewhere In Time.
-
I thought Jane Darling was immaculately conceived?
-
However, none of my errors, J.D.-wise is a patch on the butt cheeks of J.D. Cannon. :)
-
"Acclaimed British pianist/accompanist known for - among other things - his Grammy-winning recordings of Schubert lieder with tenor, Ian Bostridge."
-
DR JOSE knows the BEST people, and vice versa.
-
Guess I'm not going back to bed. Guess I should think about jogging but I don't want to.
-
Jeanette Davis----one of the "Little Godfreys" on the Arthur Godfrey Show.
-
"Viennese pianist and accompanist - and composer - who won the 1956 Busoni Competition."
-
Jason Dungjen - figure skater
-
"Elizabethan composer and lutenist of English or possibly Irish descent."
-
Oy, do we need an updated list.
-
John Dunning, mystery author.
-
B'way director John Dexter.
-
Ooh, a BK connection - Joe De Pietro - author of I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change.
-
Travel vibes to DR Ginny and DH Richard.

My back hurts just THINKING about jogging. And how did it get to be nine o'clock already?
-
Welcome thirteen GUESTS. Any J.D.s out there?
-
"Pulitzer prize-winning author of "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao"
-
Well, no one can say we didn't get to page ten.
-
I'm suddenly feeling like I may not want to go to this partay later. Maybe I'll just stop by and say hello.
-
"Actor - and fellow Lestat alum."
-
PAGE TEN
-
macchus - No, i didn't think of Dos Passos.
I don't know why, J.D. has been a tough set of initials for me. Unless my mind is just taking a holiday today.
-
"French Saint and Martyr, "The Maid of Orleans"
*This will only work en Français.
-
Was there a drag queen called Jelly Donut?
(OK, I made that up.)
-
French film director Jean Delannoy, several Inspector Maigret movies.
-
Is this a plot by SWW and derB to make us realize how valuable the list is to the game? :) :) :)
-
Is Joie Devivre a French drag queen name?
:)
-
Jack Devereaux - Days Of Our Lives character played by our very own Matt Ashford.
You beat me.... Early bird gets the worm :-)
-
My mind keeps going to phrases today rather than names.
-
Jay DeDapper - WNBC-TV news reporter
-
It is a fun game... It makes one think....
-
Still here at the apt. waiting for the cleaning person or DH Richard, whichever arrives first. If it's the cleaner, I'll skedaddle to Starbucks. If it's Richard, we'll just head on out to LGA.
-
Good day one and all...
-
John de Lancie, "Q" on "Star Trek: The Next Generation."
He was also on Days back in the 1980s. He played an eccentric character named Eugene Bradford. He was a hoot to watch.
-
Jose, I already posted jeanne d'arc.
-
My back hurts just THINKING about jogging. And how did it get to be nine o'clock already?
My clock says 7:38. I think that's because it is battery-operated and fell off the wall when the door alarm went off (the sensor fell off the wall).
-
I'm back from the market with fresh fruit, and one of the Christmas charts is essentially finished.
For lunch, I'm having a small bowl of mushroom barley soup from Arties, with a salad including a boiled egg, yellow, red, and orange peppers, and a lot of different beans: garbanzo, pinto, kidney, etc,
Then, the second Christmas chart.
-
Oh, and thanks, DR edisaurus! I'm watching THE CLOSER marathon.
-
How could you have not already posted
Joao Donato
brilliant Brasilian composer/pianist yet? ;)
-
I am fighting the urge to buy not one, but two, new cars. DS Betsy is not exactly thrilled with me right now. :)
-
Broadway vet Jack Dabdoub.

Safe travel vibes to Ginny and Richard...

Has anyone done ventriloquist

From Vixmom:
I actually met Vixdad when I was brought to his apartment to play a roleplaying game, Call of Cathulu (akin to Dungeons and Dragons)
I actually finagled the invite after hearing his voice on my friend's answering machine
What a great story, and so romantic! :D

VIBES TO YOUR FRIENDS IN NEW ORLEANS!
DR Jane - You're welcome.
Thankfully(?), none of my friends are in New Orleans and Louisiana right now. However, lots of their families are. :-\
-
Beautiful photographs of Tewkesbury
-
I already posted Jeffrey Dahmer and John Deere.
...and I suppose you were thinking about posting Joao Donato. ;D
-
If we had a list, then these mishaps wouldn't occur!
-
Thoughts and vibes of safety for those in harm's way in New Orleans...
-
Good Afternoon!
Well... I've had The Weather Channel on for a bit while I've been re-arranging some things in the kitchen. -I needed to displace about four six-packs of beer, a mini-keg, and some 2-liter bottles of Coke in order to get to my food... and to make some room for the food that I plan - had planned? - to buy today.
-
...And I seem to be picking up this vibe from Jim Cantore that he seems a bit disappointed that each time the camera pans back over to "that building", that that building is not a pile of rubble. :-\

This morning I received a phone call that brought me tears of joy.
My friend called me from the hospital & I was able to talk to her. :D
In the last weeks Ive shed many tears out of fear for her. Im still all choked up I spoke to her, and she sounded good. :) I pray there are no more setbacks and she continues to improve.
-
Jack De Lon----B'way musical actor.
-
...And when did Hurricane Coverage become a "spectator sport" - and broadcast and commented on in that manner?

Jimmy Dykes----baseball player, later manager.
Shares the distinction, along with Joe Gordon, to be the only manager ever to be traded for another manager.
-
...And when did Hurricane Coverage become a "spectator sport" - and broadcast and commented on in that manner?
Come now, you're old enough to remember Dan Rather. ;)
-
DR elmore - You probably should have just had the soup for lunch, and saved the salad for your next small meal about three hours from now. The mushroom-barley soup is quite hearty, so... but at least it was barley and not egg noodles. Eat slower, slowly, and be aware that you're chewing your food. Your blood sugar will spike after eating any meal, so you need to make sure to keep those spikes as small as possible throughout the day. Smaller meals equal smaller spikes.
*Remember, my mom was a Registered Dietitian, and I used to help her collate her menus at the hospital and nursing home.

-
Jenny Dolly---one of the two Dolly Sisters

I was amazed to turn on the car radio and hear non-stop hurricane coverage with the radio reporter in New Orleans.
-
Otherwise...
DR elmore - Did you sleep well last night?
I was in bed by 9:00 pm and slept till 7:15 am, quite nicely.

I thought there was a mandatory evacuation, anyway.

12 pages by 10:50am, you'd think it was the Tony Awards night!

From what I understand, it gets MUCH better after the first episode, so it might be worth a look. I remember not being at all impressed by the pilot of THE CLOSER, but apparently the creators took the comments of the critics to heart and made adjustments, and look at it now!

Der B and Woody - In an odd coincidence, the fellow who passed away suddenly in our building at 48 and whose funeral was this morning happens to have the initials J.D. His name was, is, Joseph Diamond - he never achieved fame, but he was a fine jazz pianist, so for the sake of helping to keep his name alive on the internet, may we put his name on the list as a jazz pianist?
Here's the death notice from the NY Times:
Joseph Frances Diamond
DIAMOND--Joseph Frances, 48, beloved son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend, passed away suddenly on August 28th. His beautiful soul, his loving heart and his wonderful music will always be treasured. Funeral will be Monday, September 1, 10am at Ahavath Israel Synagogue, Chestnut Street, Liberty, NY.
Here is his bio from Keyboard Magazine, by the way:
To describe Joseph Diamond merely as a pianist, composer, and producer is to present an image that is far too narrow. It's true that his pianistic abilities run into the virtuosic range, which is not surprising given his jazz and classical pedigree: daily childhood studies with his mother, jazz explorations in high school with George Handy, trial-by-fire in the University of Miami music department, and further college study with jazz icons such as Jackie McLean, Nat Reeves, and James Williams, as well as the late Jaki Byard and Walter Bishop, Jr. It's possible to trace still other significant influences on Joseph's musicianship by following the path of his lengthy tours on Caribbean cruise ships and Broadway road productions, as well as the years he spent mastering Latin piano styles at New York's Boy's Harbor, a legendary hotbed of Latin music activity. But knowing all this still won't prepare you for the impact Joseph's music may have on you when you hear it. Elements of all these influences come in and out of his compositions, but it's Joseph's ingenuity and creativity - okay, his chops, too - that make each tune a self-contained world of clever orchestration, beguiling melody, and burning grooves, unlike any you've heard before. The lines between tradition and innovation are blurred in Joseph's world, though he hasn't penned a tune yet that wasn't true to the integrity of the styles embodied in it. Live or on disc, Joseph's music is fresh and engaging. In fact, Joseph's two CDs are the fruit of his own production efforts, from top to bottom. Anchored by his long-time favorite rhythm section of Leo Traversa on bass and Vince Cherico on drums, each disc was recorded only after months of live shows and rehearsals. This allowed the band to fine-tune their ears to each other's strengths, and to create an ensemble sound that never flagged or stumbled. As a result, Joseph's recordings have a live feel and energy, but with studio precision. His first release, Not Your Typical New Yorker, featured the work of his late friend and main man, woodwind and keyboard artist Drew Francis, as well as that of percussionists EmedĚn Rivera, Joe Barnes, Norman Hedman, Pocholo Segundo, and Rudy Romero. About half the tunes on the disc show Joseph's Latin side, and half could be said to come from his jazz roots. But each composition is thoughtfully arranged and full of humor, energy, and excitement - all trademarks of Joseph's music. For his second self-produced album, Island Garden, Joseph expanded his palette to include a host of guest musicians on winds and percussion. His arranging talents grew to accommodate the increased resources, applying them not just for color, but to play integral compositional roles. His own playing is over the top, from blazing montunos to mad bebop solos. The variety and depth of these two albums is testimony to Joseph's determination, musicality, and imagination. Catch him playing live somewhere in New York, and you'll be similarly rewarded with melodic gems, endlessly interesting arrangements, and foot-tapping rhythms - and some dynamite piano playing to boot. From what I understand, it gets MUCH better after the first episode, so it might be worth a look. I remember not being at all impressed by the pilot of THE CLOSER, but apparently the creators took the comments of the critics to heart and made adjustments, and look at it now!

And Cillaliz's around-the-house mega projects never cease to amaze me. I know she says that she doesn't do these things all the time, but I'm still impressed.
Thanks Jeanne. It's always more work than I think it will be, though. It's just so worth it to get a job done and know I did it. I did get the bench all the way around my deck sanded today. So, as soon as the weather gets cooler - it's 90 degrees with high humidity today, I'll prime and paint it. Not going to get the cement cracks filled, but that's a job I could do in an evening so I'm not too worried about that.

Gustav arrived where expected, sooner than predicted, and a bit weaker than predicted.
The New Orleans levees are holding, so far - but some are being topped and the maximum water surge has not yet arrived; other communitites in southern LA are still in jeopardy. Conditions certainly justify the advance evacuations.

Time for you to pick on Woody!
der Brucer
-
Ooh...!
I think I'll head up to Inwood/Washington Heights and see if I can track a Piragua Man!
:)
*Besides, I think I've had enough ice cream and gelato over the past couple of days.
Wonder if Piragua Man's business has picked up since IN THE HEIGHTS
-
Congratulations, Matthew! Soon you, too, will be staining a garage!
;D Congrats Matthew!! If you need any tips on staining garages, let me know
-
Thank you DearReader Laura. That was your good deed!
It's actually sort of a strange time as Derek died sometime on the night of Sept1/2. I spoke with Maureen yesterday. She went to work which she has avoided at this time the past two years. I hope she managed the day. Grief is such a personal burdon. Derek's other siblings cope in the "blocking it all out" way.
-
Seriously Matthew, owning a house can be a lot of work, but there's nothing like the feeling that it's yours. It's very exciting. My advice is do a deep cleanining and paint whatver walls you want to paint before moving in. It's a lot easier than when you have your stuff in the house.
-
Some people find it easier by keeping busy.

Jim Diamond (Solo singer and one timeleader of UK band PhD - a favourite of Rodzinski)

Thank you DR JFL for posting the obit.
I think anyone who can even play the piano is amazing!

I just wish one of them was closer to me in my 'hood. I sometimes see one or two up on Broadway and 14th, but they're not "regulars".
*And I really can't wait for Lin-Manuel Miranda to finish up his forthcoming YouTube series: "Legally Brown: The Search for the Next Piragua Guy". I know some people who were a part of the filming, and none of them could keep a straight face while they were telling me about it. Good times! ;D
-
And Jose and JMK even use the black notes.
-
Jose - Is that frozen chocolate confection gelato or sorbet? Whatever it is, it is insanely delicious.
-
We once took the easy way out and served bought Lemon gelato at a dinner instead of the sorbet we had planned. I doubt anyone knew the difference.
-
From what I understand, it gets MUCH better after the first episode, so it might be worth a look. I remember not being at all impressed by the pilot of THE CLOSER, but apparently the creators took the comments of the critics to heart and made adjustments, and look at it now!
The reviewers I've read have seen the first FOUR episodes and the only positive thing I've read is that it goes from hideous to not quite awful in those four episodes.
-
In fun neighbor news - Our very dear neighbor Tony Chiroldes is understudy for the Piragua Guy and apparently has been playing the part for the past week.
-
OY!
So.. Just when I thought I had finally explained to my mom that if she buys the theatre tickets herself via Telecharge (phone or website) and uses the new Season of Savings discount codes, she would get them cheaper than if I put a house seat request in for them... -And it looks like some of the house seats for Gypsy this week just got released for public sale...
"Well, I just called Telecharge, and they said there would be a service charge for each ticket... Can't you just go down to the box office for me with my credit card number and give it to them?"
Hmm... :P
*Although, she just called back... After doing the rest of the math, she realized that she's still saving about $35 per ticket, so... Whew! ;)
-
Jim Dandy (Song character - Lavern Baker)
-
Jose - Is that frozen chocolate confection gelato or sorbet? Whatever it is, it is insanely delicious.
The "Cioccolata Extranoir" is actually a sorbet. -And, yes, it's insanely delicious. Just ask DR Ginny's DH Richard. ;)
And the "Crema di Grom" is a gelato.
Here's some more info on the flavor: Extra-Noir Chocolate (http://www.grom.it/eng/pages/cioc_extra.htm).
-
Ooohhh...looks like we're gonna get us some Hanna!
So are we. Hugo, which was one of the worst disasters ever in this area, happened in 1989, so another "H" hurricane is a scary thought.
-
Hmmm...We immediately liked THE CLOSER.
So did I. Immediately I knew it was going to become one of my favorite shows. There was never ANY doubt about it.
-
Jose - Is that frozen chocolate confection gelato or sorbet? Whatever it is, it is insanely delicious.
And I hope you tried the cookie "leaves" too. :)
-
The reviewers I've read have seen the first FOUR episodes and the only positive thing I've read is that it goes from hideous to not quite awful in those four episodes.
Oh, so does that apply to Mark-Paul Gosselaar's hair too?
;)
-
We're consuming the sorbet and gelato in extreme moderation, so we've been saving the cookies.
-
OH!
~~~~~SAFE TRAVEL VIBES TO DR GINNY AND HER DH RICHARD~~~~~
-
Had a pretty great afternoon of viewing. I began with rewatching the second episode of BURN NOTICE. This is the one where Michael helps the elderly lady who was scammed out of her life savings. I really love this episode.
-
We're consuming the sorbet and gelato in extreme moderation, so we've been saving the cookies.
Well, there are cookies blended into the "Crema di Grom" along with the chocolate chips, so... ;)
-
Yes, I've read reviews comparing his look to that of a heroin addict. And Jane Kazmarek has received almost universal pans from everything I've read.
Well, there's a brief preview of sorts in one of Seth Rudetsky's recent columns:
ONSTAGE & BACKSTAGE: Seth and the City (http://www.playbill.com/celebritybuzz/article/120345.html)
-
Page Seventeen WIZARD OF OZ Gang Dance!!!
-
And speaking of Seth Rudetsky...
In his most recent Playbill.com column, he shares the story of Loretta Ables Sayre, the Bloody Mary in the current revival of South Pacific. It's a truly wonderful and moving and inspiring story. Well, worth the time to read it.
ONSTAGE & BACKSTAGE: A Bloody Good Week (http://www.playbill.com/celebritybuzz/article/120731.html)
*And there's even some stuff for "Project Runway" fans at the top of the article.
-
I'm just being lazy and listening to CDs.
-
Next I watched NEXT AVENGERS: Heroes of TOmorrow on Blu-ray. It's a made-for-video animated feature with children of the great Marvel superheroes like Thor and Captain America. Not much depth to the story but I'm sure pre-teens would like the fights and the back and forth banter as the kids bait each other.
-
I watched all of the bonus features on the disc, too. There were two featurettes on the making of the movie plus two previews of other Marvel animated films on DVD.
-
Please explain "Piragua Guy" to me. Thank you.
-
Jack Davenport - Actor. (UK series "This Life" but prob best known for Pirates these days)
-
Since I finished my reviewing chores for the day early, I put on THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT III on Blu-ray and watched about 45 minutes of it. (I got to the begnning of the Debbie Reynolds-"Glamor" segment).
Of the three TE films, the third one looks and sounds BY FAR the best on Blu-ray. Some of those Technicolor clips are truly spectacular looking in HD. Makes one really hunger for the movies to start turning up on Blu-ray.
-
And for anyone who might be contemplating seeing a Broadway or Off-Broadway show over the next couple of weeks...
Season of Savings (http://seasonofsavings.com/)
*I have to say, the pickings seem a bit slimmer this Fall than usual. I guess with the continued box office "success" of Wicked and Jersey Boys, and the crazy-good pre-sale of Equus, Billy Elliot and All My Sons that's to be expected. -Along with the recent slew of closings over the past couple of months.
-
Tonight on tv:
The CW premieres of:
Gossip Girl (which i really really like)
One Tree Hill
Also Canadian Idol.
And the 2 hour premiere of Prison Break on Fox.
And Project Runway 5 starts tonight!
-
My mom went to Vermont and brought me back Patti Lupone Gypsy. Yeah!
-
"Marguerite" closes in London on Sept 13th. We see it on Sept 12th.
Ruthie Henshell's voice has not stood up to the role it seems!
-
DR Jane good news about your friend. Hope she's doing better.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
I keep expecting to see a photo of hurricane damage with the tag line: "GUSTAV MAULER".
The New York Post will gladly steal the idea. :P
-
My niece decided that at her 3rd birthday party in 2 weeks she would like to play musical chairs. So we practiced today. 2 chairs, 2 players. Then my sister decided to play (2 chairs, 3 players). And she beat my niece. After that my niece decided she only wanted to play with me. :)
-
I'm catching up. Der Brucer is taking a well-earned nap. OK, another well-earned nap. I'll get to work on the list when I get to that point. Everybody keep your tighty whities untwisted.
-
DR Matthew-GOOD LUCK! :D
Thank you DR Jennifer.

I had not heard this. :(
Were the reviews that bad?
I'm still hoping to get the cd.
-
Justin Deas.... HE just showed up on my Santa Barbra tape
From Guiding Light! Buzz Cooper!
-
Please explain "Piragua Guy" to me. Thank you.
Hmm...
Well, first of all, he's a character in the musical, In The Heights.
Secondly, he has a song called "Piragua". -Which, in the show, is essentially there to cover a scene transition, but it's a fun song, and Eliseo Roman can really sing those high(!) notes.
A piragua is a basically a snow cone that's comes together after the "piragua man" shaves some ice off a block of ice, puts it into a cone, then pours the flavored syrup - or two, or even a rainbow! - of your choice over top.
-
The CD is certainly available in (from) the UK DR Jennifer - and is it quite an enjoyable listen.
Ruthie's voice is great on the recording. Friends who saw the show a week or so ago said her acting is great but her voice is "shot".

So, we've learned that Sockeye salmon is red salmon. Isn't salmon pink? And why "sockeye"? Maybe if you sock a salmon in the eye the eye gets red.

Today is DS Craigs DDs 3rd birthday.

There is "pink salmon" too. However, the Red Sockeye has more of the good oils and antioxidants in it.
-
Awww...
Happy Birthday, DD Yogi!
-
This from my friend Pam in London:
Jaqueline, who took us, said that she has been really off, and boy did it show. She sounded very husky, off key, and at times inaudible. Which was such a shame, because the rest of the cast were working their butts off, and were so good, particularly, Armand - Julian Ovenden. He is great to look at, a wonderful singer, and actually plays the piano in the show as well.
I will say though, that Henshall to me is an extremely good actress, and had her singing been up to par, she would have been amazing
(Jaqueline is one of the production staff for Marguerite)
Houses have only been 60%.
-
DR DearReaderLaura - Here's a bit more info about the "Piragua Guy"...
It's hotter than the islands are today
And Mr. Softee's truck has broken down!
And here comes all his customers my way
I told you, I run the town!
Piragua, Piragua
1.25, Piragua
Piragua, Piragua
2.25, Piragua
New block of ice, hike up the price
Lai lo le lo lai, lai lo le lo lai
Blackouts are nice, blackouts are nice
Lo le lo lai
Keep scraping by
Piragua!

Canned salmon is pink, because it has been cooked.
Farm-raised salmon is pink, although a much more vibrant pink than canned.
Wild-caught salmon, on the other hand, is definately red. And it tastes better, too. Tom, our seafood guy, made sure I knew about that.

Also on TV tonight is the season premiere of PRISON BREAK. I've never gotten into the show but for those who have, it's a two hour premiere.
-
I'm going to hop off-line now to write up what I watched this afternoon.

And for anyone who might be contemplating seeing a Broadway or Off-Broadway show over the next couple of weeks...
Season of Savings (http://seasonofsavings.com/)
*I have to say, the pickings seem a bit slimmer this Fall than usual. I guess with the continued box office "success" of Wicked and Jersey Boys, and the crazy-good pre-sale of Equus, Billy Elliot and All My Sons that's to be expected. -Along with the recent slew of closings over the past couple of months.
Any idea how long Patti will stay in GYPSY?
-
Jason Dunstall is most certainly not a soccer player SWoody/DerBrucer
(Australian Rules Football)
-
Jorge De La Rosa----pitcher, Colorado Rockies.
He's on the mound right now, and I'm watching him.

Too long

At least a until the year anniversary of the Broadway opening, I think. However, she is touring a concert act next season with Mandy Patinkin, so I'm guessing she'll be having some scheduled absences.

Would that be in the fall of 08, or did it open in 08?
(Well, everybody else asks questions without looking it up themselves!)

The new David Cambell CD has been getting airplay here!
My information was incorrect. Tracks from "First and Foremost" are being played. (It is a repackaging of his first two cDs).
The New Cd is due out at the end of October.

Joseph Dabney, author of Smokehouse Ham, Spoon Bread, & Scuppernong Wine: The Folklore and Art of Appalachian Cooking.
Don't have it yet, it's on my wishlist, but any book with Scuppernong in the title has to be worth it!

Great news, Jane!!

Jerry Dixon, Broadway actor who is on, among others, the original cast recording of Jonathan Larson's tick, tick...BOOM!.
-
Jean Dalrymple - founder of City Center and producer of many, many musicals there.
And then there's Jean, the chacter in the musical Brigadoon, who marries Charlie Dalrymple to become Jean Dalrymple...who, I think, was named after the real Jean Dalrymple.

Another from the wish-list:
James Dickerson, author of Last Suppers: If The World Ended Tomorrow, What Would Be Your Last Meal?
No, seriously, someone wrote a book like this. And the people who responded are quite an interesting list.
Recipes included, of course.

I hereby challenge each of us to do ONE good deed in honor of OzDerek, who was one good guy.
If familial obligations count, then I'm off to my parents' to put together some shelves that my mom wants in their bathroom. Fortunately, they don't hang on the wall, just set on the floor. Those are much easier to assemble, and you don't have to deal with hanging a very heavy thing on a wall.
Until later!

I have thunk and thunk and no more J.D.s have sprung to mind.
So now I am watching a very odd Bollywood movie from 1960 called HAWA MAHAL...it has two gals from and underwater kindgdom who collect the souls of sailors. One of the gals (played by Helen) falls in love with a swashbuckler and right now the two love birds are trapped in a castle that is floating in the sky.
This is my kind of movie!

I'm sure many do in Ashland, or at least plenty of pot.
But enough about you and Keith. ;D

James Daly was one of the first I thought of - I must have got sidetracked by John Charles Daly.
Guest host on Today that infamous 1964 morning when the special guest was Miss Frances Farmer. Ah, to have been a fly on the camera....
-
Jim David - comedian (Comedy Central. Broadway's Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public)
Whoever was dance director for that was my Uncle's last secretary. Was there someone named Richard Vidale or something like that? He was a sweetheart, completely buried in unfinished paperwork after Pat died. I made sure the shyster lawfirm that handled my Uncle's estate kept him employed at an extremely high rate of pay for about six months after the death, just to handle things.

I'm going to get dinner on the table. Something simple - flatbread pizza, loaded (by which I mean piled) with goodies. Pepperoni, diced chicken breast, mushrooms, onion, olives, bell pepper, lots of mozzarella - basically, I raid the salad bar for all sorts of yummy stuff.
(BK, this is the sort of thing you might consider for your diet. Get a pizza flatbread, like Boboli (check the dietary box for the details), and top it with things you enjoy and are comfortable with. It should be far more satisfying than those "chicken strips" or whatever it was you had a couple of days ago that you were so unhappy with. And the clean-up is a breeze!)

Monday evening greetings from SW Ohio! Our flight was smooth and we arrived earlier than scheduled.
Y'all have been very busy with JDs today!
Great news about DR Jane's friend and about DR Matthew's possible impending home ownership!
-
Jenny Diver - of "Mack the Knife" fame (or infamy)
(oh, as Tomovoz noted, it's on the list, but as Jenny Driver)

Great that you got back safely, Ginny!

Jenny Diver - of "Mack the Knife" fame (or infamy)
Missing on the list but she was mentioned.

Hi Ginny, nice to see you safely & easily home :)
Thank you, I'm still deeply moved to have received the call from my friend.
-
Der B is watching The Closer. I'm going to head to the back, and watch some DVD stuff.
One or the other of us will probably get the list back up to date later.
I expect everyone to behave. No squabbling, no hissy fits, no "giving of noogies," no matter how "affectionately" they are intended.
And, believe me, I will know if any of you are stepping out of line!
I just know someone is going to act up. I just know it. ::)
-
Der Brucer has added to the above list:
No wedgies!
-
Joey DePalma (character in Face in the Crowd)
-
Jose de la Cruz - writer
-
I'm tired.

-
Ja'net Dubois - actress on Good Times, also known for Movin' On Up theme for The Jeffersons

Joy Division NOT Joyce Division
Thank you for the Football correction for Jason Dunstall.

I'm tired.

Pot does that to some people.

Actor Michael Pate died.
-
I didn't see my favorite accordion player on the list: Jackie Daly
-
Well, I guess actually Van Dyke Parks would be my very favorite accordion player...
-
Great that you got back safely, Ginny!
Thanks, DR FJL!
Here's where we stayed. Our apartment was on the top floor of the lighter colored building, second window from the left. The entrance to the building is around the corner, on 53rd St.
-
That sounded like a wonderful trip, Ginny! I am envious!

Jonathan Daly
of comic duo Delo & Daly. (1960s TV)

Ken Delo was on the Lawrence Welk show it seems

I spy an Ann!
-
Hello all. I hope everyone is having a good evening
-
I"m watching Raising the Bar. Reminds me of my early public defender days
-
I spy an Ann!
AKA Jed's dearest, an honorary JD
-
Ok, maybe it's a bit over the top, but not as much as you'd think
-
I always loved Michael Pate, mostly because he was in The Court Jester. He was in the movie I watched yesterday, Five Fingers.
-
There's another Jerry Dixon. It's a character played by actor Peter Riegert on a LAW & ORDER episode. I remember the name because he was a bisexual and was finally killed by his wife after she had also killed his male lover that he was going to take the blame for.
-
Back from the partay, which was lovely - I stayed the longest I've ever stayed and I decided to eat my meal o' the day there. I mostly had some really excellent Chinese chicken salad, plus two small helpings of incredible Jambalaya. That was it. I spent most of the evening conversing with my pal, film composer John Scott, and Ian Whitcomb. It was really fun.
-
Now THIS is the way to welcome in a month - over six hundred postings and 21 pages, and the evening is young, which is more than I can say.
-
I had a fun evening of viewing, my first in a long time and probably my last for awhile with so many movies and TV box sets awaiting review.
I began by finishing THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT III. Always a wonderfully nostalgic movie, and so many of those Technicolor clips look just stupendous in high definition. Can't wait for some of those films to start arriving on Blu-ray. Looks like the first two will be AN AMERICAN IN PARIS and GIGI.
-
So good to "see" you, Ann. How are you?
-
So are we. Hugo, which was one of the worst disasters ever in this area, happened in 1989, so another "H" hurricane is a scary thought.
Funny you should say that - the Fox meteorologist predicted that Hanna would become a monster storm ("just like Hugo of Floyd") and reach Cat 3 or more before ramming into the East Coast (probably the Carolinas) on Friday.
der Brucer
-
Next, I put in a movie I've been wanting to revisit for many months - SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS. What an amazing string of five hit songs in a row in that score: "I'm Wishing," "One Song," "With a Smile and a Song," "Whistle While You Work," and "Heigh Ho." Then after the two dwarf silly songs, we get "Someday My Prince Will Come."
Wow! And not a single one of those songs was Oscar nominated!
-
Next, I put in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN and watched it upconverted. I got through "Good Mornin'" before I turned it off.
-
And then I watched tonight's THE CLOSER. Always love a Willie Rae and Clay episode.
-
BTW, I have the windows and doors open to let in the cool air. Feels great!
-
Great character actress Jane Dulo.
-
The offer has been dropped off to the realtor. It will be brought to the bank tomorrow. Now we wait to see if they accept it. Then inspections and things begin. Thanks for all the vibes!!!!
-
Why hasn't someone named John Dorian, Zach Braff's character on SCRUBS?
-
Why hasn't someone named John Dorian, Zach Braff's character on SCRUBS?
We were all politely waiting for you. ;)
-
Well, tomorrow I'll be seeing (for the first time) KILL BILL, Vol. 1 on Blu-ray. Two years after DR TPunk advised me to watch it, I'm finally going to see it (work related; not for pleasure). I'm going into it with an open mind even though I haven't derived much pleasure from Quentin Tarantino's other films though I can see merit in certain sequences and performances of his work.
-
I didn't see my favorite accordion player on the list: Jackie Daly
Because, as previously noted, you did not identify he/she/it.

And now I'm going to head downstairs, read a bit, and then go to bed.
Good night!

Ok, maybe it's a bit over the top, but not as much as you'd think
I enjoyed it (Raising The Bar) - although I think they tried to cram too much chacter development stuff into one episode.
der Brucer
And how many other officers of the court have you slept with :-X
-
DR Ginny - Good to hear that you and Richard made it home safe and sound - and slightly ahead of schedule too. :)

Let's just say back in teh 80s when I was a young PD, and before Clarence Thomas/Anita Hill made it off limits, there was a lot of intraoffice "fun" going on in our office. I only knew of one PD/DA couple and that was a BIG PROBLEM. Didn't know of any judges sleeping with their staff, but it isn't unbeliveable that it was happening back then.
We went from 80 lawyers in our office to 180 in 5 years. We were almost all young and it was wild in those days. Beyond that, I'm not talking.

Not quite, DR Matthew. They will counter-offer and you will counter their counter-offer. Or something like that.
-
And that's what's called "Taking the Fifth". ;)
Upon the advice of my counsel, I choose to invoke my Fifth Amendment Right to remain silent

I need to be at work early tomorrow so I suppose I should get some sleep.

Not quite, DR Matthew. They will counter-offer and you will counter their counter-offer. Or something like that.
In this case, the bank owns the property. We're thinking that they will go with whatever hits closest to the asking price. We know there are a few other offers, ours is pretty close to the asking price. So, we're hoping not to have to deal with the counter offer thing. Then again, I know nothing about this!
-
Nice job, everybody!
Good night!
-
Good night, Kerry.

I hope your home-buying experience is easy, DR Matthew!
Ours was pretty easy, but the seller was not very nice.
So when I had to sell my mom's house, I was a very very nice seller. And the buyers were nice, too.

Well, I believe I'm off to bed now too. -I just hope I remember that tomorrow/today is a "Tuesday" and not a "Monday". ;)

Did the vixter finish a book?
Not yet, she has been very busy with soccer practice and getting ready for school and HHW gatherings (although she did have it with her and read some more chapters on on drive into the city , it was too dark to read inthe car on our way home)
She is enjoying it very much.
-
But can anyone make me less fuzzy?
The avatar needs to be 110 pixels by 150 pixels. The actual picture that you're using for your avatar is 82 by 86 pixels, and then HHW automatically stretches it to 110 by 150. If you e-mail me the original photo, I can fix it. :)

Or, you could do something like this:
