Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a churro vibe and also a Charo vibe, and now it is time for you to post until the coochie coochie cows come home.

My favorite Steve Lawrence track will forever and always be Go Away Little Girl.

My favorite Jack Jones track will forever and always be Lollipops and Roses, with Love with the Proper Stranger a very close second, followed by Wives and Lovers.

My favorite Nat King Cole track might be Smile, but there are many others that I adore.

Topic of the Day:  the only songs that I can think of for each singer is:

Nat "King" Cole:  Unforgettable
Jack Jones:  The Theme from "The Love Boat"
Steve Lawrence:  "Las Vegas" from Jerry Herman's Miss Spectacular...the lyrics even refer to Steve and Edie!

Friday was an odd day off.

My mom called me in the morning, primarily because I had not responded to an e-mail she sent to my office.  She never sends me anything requiring a response, so I immediately knew she had some bad news.

The last sibling of my father passed away Friday morning at 11 a.m. edt.  My Aunt Fanny, who lived in Roanoke VA, was 93 years old and had been in assisted  living for several years.  While she always knew her daughters, other family members and friends when they visited, she had memory lapses and mild dementia.  They declared cause of death as congestive heart failure.  Of course, "something" must be a cause of death even when the body wears slam out.

I am not writing this to solicit vibes of sympathy.  My Aunt Fanny lived a long, productive life and she was a very good woman -- as a sister, as a wife, as a mother and as an aunt.

I wasn't much in the mood to chat on any forums today, so I tackled some chores I've been avoiding forever, and I put a couple of DVDs on -- "'Follies' in Concert", "Sondheim at Carnegie Hall" and the "Candide" in concert with Paul Groves and Kristen Chenoweth.  I also watched "Enchanted" on HBO in HD.

It's tough watching the "Follies" concert DVD...so many folks are now gone -- Comden and Green and the lovely Lee Remick.  And seeing Dorothy Loudon performing so remarkably at the Sondheim "do" was both a joy and a sadness.

A milestone is approaching for me.  One that I don't much want.  But I can't stop it.  Each year seems to be full of people passing on...many more people I've known or heard of than was true in my first several decades.  Sigh.

At any rate, it is time I retired for the evening and gave this tired body a rest.

TOD:

I like all three of these singers, but finding a favorite for each of them - not sure that I could.  I certainly like all of the songs mentioned.

Jack Jones over the opening titles of WHERE LOVE HAS GONE and WIVES AND LOVERS...didn't he sing for that movie?...

Steve his hit song GO AWAY LITTLE GIRL, of course....but I also like some of his songs on the GOLDEN RAINBOW cast album, especially his version of I'VE GOTTA BE ME.

Nat King Cole...."Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer" and his songs alone and with Stubby Kaye in "Cat Ballou."

Loving the pictures from the NYC gatherings!

I have not heard the LuPone GYPSY, probably never will.

Faith Dane was so wonderful....and of course playing Miss Electra in the movie version of GYPSY is a girl who can be seen almost nightly on the Game Show Network....it's the Sylvania girl from Beat The Clock, Roxanne Arlen.

August 30: Venus enters Libra

Venus loves being in her own sign, so this transit brings sweetness to all of your encounters. It's time to focus on your similarities with others and put your differences to the side. With Venus joining Mercury in a social air sign, you won't want to be alone! Make plans ahead of time. What a great transit to get together with friends or call the babysitter and schedule a date-night. Since both Venus and Libra have an eye for what's beautiful, this is a perfect time to visit your local art museum, plant flowers in your garden or even join an anti-graffiti campaign and paint a mural!

August 30: New Moon in Virgo

A new Moon in practical yet idealistic Virgo gives you plenty of energy to accomplish something that's meaningful and inspiring. All new Moons represent a fresh cycle, so this is a good time to hone in on what you want to achieve. As you think of a project, dream or goal that you want to infuse with this lunar energy, allow it to help you organize and implement those projects that are the most important to you.

Last night I went to see Liz Callaway with Alex Ryback at the Colony Hotel. Her program was culled from all three of her albums produced by BK plus new material. Her patter was funny and even handle some unexpected comments from an audience member. She still can sing beautifully and she is one of my favorite singers. As always Alex is one of the best musical directors there is and my mother who has seen many cabaret shows with me considers Alex to be the pianist there is. She calls him the "gold standard"

Alex and I schmoozed after the show. Liz was busy selling her cds and we chatted for a while. If I can scan the CD cover for the show she did with her sister Ann Hampton.  Liz wrote an amusing little tidbit that she told me I could show her sister when I see her in a few months.

The only negative thing I have to say (and I didn't say this to Liz or Alex) was ever since I joined Toastmasters I am very aware of people who use "Umm" or "Ahh" as a cover while the next thought comes into their heads. Not always an easy thing to do, but there was far too many of them. Someone should there during rehersal with a bell or a buzzer and sound it every time an "Umm" or "Ahh" is uttered. This will cure anyone when they realize how often they use it.

I've never been much of a Steve Lawrence or Jack Jones fan, but picking my favorite Nat "King" Cole recording is easy.

[For the benefit of any uninformed youngsters who prowl this board, Allen was Jack's father.]

Speaking of Allen Jones, wouldn't it be nice if they finally released the 1936 version of SHOW BOAT onto DVD?

Jones stars in that, along with Irene Dunne, Helen Morgan, Paul Robeson and Charles Winninger.

I have a good copy that was released legally in Brazil (no subtitles), under the title MAGNOLIA.
