Nice new furniture DRMS!

Feel better DRSandra.  And I hope DRJennifer gets everything worked out....grrrrrrrrr...relationships!

So many things last night after I logged off.  I do READ everything, I just can't comment on EVERYTHING!!!  LOL

Two top tens?

Oh my.

Well I guess one of my top ten theatre experiences would be:

AN EVENING WITH DAME EDNA  ;D

A couple of others would be:

STONES IN HIS POCKETS and THE GOAT, or WHO IS SYLVIA?  :D

About the cd's I will have to think, although the GYPSY and MAME soundtracks are a lot of fun!  ;D

Happy Birthday from OZ DR Maya. I hope your special day is indeed wonderful and that the year ahead brings you much joy.
My top tens will have to wait until another 8 hours or more have passed.
I watched "The Road to Bali" tonight. Ihave a feeling that my sister will not see the same scenery whilst she is there. The film opens with some beautiful shots of my home town. It is hard to recognise the Melbourne of my childhood.

BK said in his notes:

May I just ask a question? Why didn’t Mr. Oscar Hammerstein just make it Climb Every Mountain? I know you leave out the “e” when you sing it, but really, did he need to be so cutesy with the apostrophe? It’s not like he’s saving a lot of letters, is it? None of these apostrophe words save a lot of letters, like doesn’t. One lousy letter saved – what is the point? Someone thought they were really creating a shortcut with that one, didn’t they?

I think the answer is the following:  When every is spelled as every and is properly pronounced there are three syllables and therefore three notes would be neccesary to sing that word.  If it is written as ev'ry t there are only two syllable and therefore two notes used.

It is possible that since Mr. Hammerstein was quite ill during the writing of The Sound of Music that Mr. Richard Rodgers wrote the score first and had OScar write the lyrics afterwards. So the lyrics had to fit the music written.

My theater going experience was limited this year.

The Producers
Hairspray
Thoroughly Modern Millie

all in NYC

Saw some plays here in Florida, but I did not like them.

Did see a lot of Cabaret as I have tickets for a series in Delray Beach, FL but I am not sure if that counts.

I wished Maya her happy birthday yesterday because the calendar begins with Monday as opposed to Sunday which is the first day of the week. I didn't notice it until now.

I don't believe in top ten of the year lists because some years there is so much that it is impossible to narrow it down and other years there is almost nothing.  Therefore some years list would contain titles that are totally inferior to items that had to be left off lists in other years and other years lists would only sratch the surface.

Thank you so much for all the kind bday wishes!

I think it's going to be a nice 21st birthday!  My mom and I are going into Georgetown (I'm at her workplace now) to see Big Fish and have lunch at a French restaurant...Les Halles de Paris, I think it is called.  Then I may invite some friends over for cake.  You know between Christmas and my birthday, I feel like I've gained 10 pounds.  I will have to go easy on the rich French food, with which I definitely plan to order a glass of wine!

Tomorrow morning I leave for NYC!

I will have to consider my top 10 lists and post later, since I must be on the run!  Hugs to all!

Happy Birthday, Maya!!

-Ooh, you're going to Les Halles... The pommes frites are tres delicieuse!

My top tens will have to wait until later tonight, as I'm about to get ready to head into rehearsal.  It's a long day on the schedule - Noon-10:00 - but the MD called me and reminded that since it is the first day of rehearsal, it will be filled with the usual first day stuff (meet & greet, Equity meeting, read-thru, costume measurements, etc.).  So, it should be kind of a relaxed day for me - which will be good since I'm used to being off on Mondays. ;)

Well, gotta run!

Well I saw Mona Lisa Smile - but I shall not review it - not because it was bad, good, great or amazing - only that PRIOR to the movie beginning there was a trailer for a new movie called "Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!" which, without question pays homage to Bye Bye Birdie. I'll let you decide for yourself.. Here's a link to the description and trailer...

Metamorphoses at Circle In The Square.

DR Joy and Noel's Musical Wedding ;)

Urinetown Original B;way cast

Didn't get to see alot of shows this year, and many of the things I did see are not worth mentioning. Hopefully next year will be more notable :P

Went to see Cold Mountain on saturday night. I really loved it and was very impressed with Renee Zellweger's performance.

Happy Birthday, DR Maya!

Thanks to BK for explaining the use of the word "anamorphic" as it applies to DVDs to DR S. Woody last night. As I read the rest of the posts from yesterday this morning, I was chomping at the bit to explain that we buffs of widescreen perspectives know anamorphic processes like Cinemascope from non-anamorphic ones like VistaVision. I really do have hope that Universal will eventually return to VERTIGO and give it the transfer it deserves; likewise PSYCHO. Why should something like TOPAZ have an anamorphic DVD and not these two Hitchcock masterpieces? If Fox can return to PLANET OF THE APES and give it a proper anamorphic transfer, Universal can do the same.

I can't list a Top Ten theatergoing experinece in 2003, at least of sitting in the theater watching something on the stage. Every stage play I saw this year was seriously flawed (SOUTH PACIFIC with a terrible Bloody Mary; GOD'S FAVORITE with good acting but a mediocre play), and my enjoyment was dimmed somewhat. Now, stage productions I saw on DVD like ELAINE STRITCH AT LIBERTY, BARBARA COOK in MOSTLY SONDHEIM, or OKLAHOMA! would certainly qualify as memorable viewing experiences of theater pieces, but I wasn't in a theater to see them. Hopefully, a couple of buddies and I are flying up to NYC in July and will see at least four shows there which I'm SURE will rank in next yar's Top 10 list.

I can't belive I almost forgot!!!

The MERRY, MARY, MARRY questions are finally going to be answered!

I was fiddling with my schedule for next term about a month ago and saw an opening for a intro class in linguistics.  I thought it would be interesting so I signed up (I needed a nice fat elective that fit in timewise)

A couple of weeks later I was thinking about the MERRY, MARY, MARRY thing again and was wondering if the prof who would be teaching my sociolinguistics class was the same one who wrote the paper.

Turns out it is... maybe he'll address it in class! :)

DR TCB, what decision was made about another weekend of OLIVER?

Well, it turns out that almost all of us in the cast apparently misunderstood the director's question.  She was asking about extending the show beyond the four week run; and NOTabout cutting the run short.  So, I guess we will go ahead with this coming weekend as planned.  The funny thing is that practically no one involved with the show would have been willing to extend the run beyond the original closing date, anyway.

Happy 21st Birthday to DR Maya!

DR Emily: You won't be able to get a good night's sleep on the bus. It stops quite a few times (the border, and then at least ONE to TWO rest stops). But it's not as bad as you think.

When you get there, do you know where you're going to go? It will be VERY early (like 5:30am).

I would suggest leaving your bags somewhere (will they let you at your hotel). You can probably walk there (not sure if you guys are taking a regular voyageur from the station or a special bus for this trip). If you have a special bus, it might even drop you off at your hotel.

When you arrive there early you can always go to McDonalds. Or just hang out in the Marriot Marquis. Or go watch whatever is happening at The Today show.

Good luck and have fun.

I don't know what will happen. But I want to make sure this doesn't make me sick (since I replay everything over and over).

Oh and I always gain weight during the holidays. But I've lost 8 lbs. So only 8 more to go till i'm at the weight I like to be at. It's so hard to believe I gained 15 lbs. It happened WAY too easily.  But I don't think I'll need to diet the next few days, since I do not feel like eating (which works well when you're trying to lose weight) :)

Happy vibes to everyone.

Oh, by the way (BTW in internet lingo) I forgot to mention yet another example of the power of HHW, that happened to me.  Yesterday, in the dressing room before the show, one of my fellow cast members pulls this little object out of his pack and says, "I bet none of you know what this is, do you?"

Immediately, all of the memories of all the posts that I had read during the weekend came flooding back to me.  "I know what it is, I said casually, "it;s a Memory Stick for a computer."  I then proceeded to repeat everything Bruce had said about downloading files onto the Memory Stick and transfering them directly to another computer.

The guy just stood there, crestfallen that someone had stolen his moment of glory.  And I owe it all to BK!

Having been E&T for almost a week, I hope all DRs enjoyed their Christmas and/or Hanukah.  I also hope all DRs have  happy and safe New Year's celebrations.

As far as my top 10 theatre-going experiences in 2003, I can't find 10 but will include these:

1. and 2.   Gypsy (saw it twice) - no matter what some say, I thought Bernadette and the production were terrific.

3.  Nine - Banderas should have won the Tony

4.  The Boy From Oz - having followed Peter Allen's career somewhat, as well as Judy's and Liza's, the show certainly held my interest, even if it wasn't Shakespere.  Jackman gives one of the all time great Broadway performances and the audience loves him.

5.  Wicked - Idina and Kristen were terrific and the show was very enjoyable.

6.  Take Me Out - an engrossing and well-acted play.

7.  Never Gonna Dance - a dumb book and leading players who were not very charismatic on stage as actors or singers.  The music and the dancing, however, make it worthwhile.

Although we also say "Thoroughly Modern Millie", I just can't put that on any list of memorable theatre-going experiences since it was just Thoroughly Medicore, not memorable in the good sense and not bad enough to be memorable in the bad sense a la Dance of the Vampires from 2002.

Looking forward in 2004 to:

Fiddler on the Roof
Bombay Dreams
Assassins
Pacific Overtures
Sly Fox
Frogs
Caroline, or Change
Jerry Springer (if it makes it here)

A VERY HAPPY, VERY SPECIAL 21st BIRTHDAY TO MAYA!!

We are snowed in.  I would say at least nine inches.  Our company can’t come, but then he is sick and they are heading back home to L.A. from San Francisco.  I shoveled a path from the back door down the deck for Echo.  Then I shoveled the front porch and did a very narrow path from the front door to the driveway before I quit.  The snow is very heavy and the driveway too long for me to do.  It’s about 300 ft long.   I am very concerned being snowed in with Keith running a high fever of 103.6.

Loosing power!  I’ll post later if I can.

Tell Keith to STAY IN BED.  Very good lists, but I'm afraid we need more of them.  Unfortunately, I didn't see all that much theater this year, but I really enjoyed Hairspray, which I managed to see with all its original players.  I adored the Elaine Stritch at Liberty evening and also it was grand seeing Lily Tomlin's one-woman show again (well, Jane Wagner and Lily Tomlin's one-woman show).   As for best musical theater CDs, I'd say Wicked was good, and the Columbia reissues were excellent, none more so than Li'l Abner.

My top ten theatrical experiences/recordings of the past year (now, when we say "top," that can mean best and worst experiences, right? Cause DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES is right up there on the top of the list for worst theatre experience of the year...):

1. WICKED
2. DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES
3. THE BOY FROM OZ (Hugh Jackman--wow!)
4. WONDERFUL TOWN
5. LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS
6. GYPSY
7. TABOO (oy)
8. URBAN COWBOY (Why, God? Why!?!)
9. BOUNCE (OY!)
10. CHICAGO (Melanie Griffith--OY VEY)

It's great that we have the 100th user, but why aren't more of the 100 posting?  It seems like the same 30 or 40 every day.  Let's get some views from some other DRs.  If you took the time to register, don't be a lurker.

Yes, it's strange that people take the time to register and then not join in the merriment and mirth and laughter and legs.  After all, you don't have to be registered to read the posts - c'mon in, the water's fine, that's what I say.

Happy Birthday to fellow Capricorn, Maya!

Most of my top ten theatre experiences happened in London which is where I see most of my theatre.  In no particular order, they'd be:

1) Trevor Nunn's last show as head of the National...an incandescent production of Love's Labour's Lost in the Olivier Theatre, starring Joseph Fiennes and Olivia Williams.

2) Derek Jacobi's TEMPEST at the Old Vic.  Not the best production of the play, but maybe the best Prospero I've ever seen.  An angry, bitter, unforgiving Prospero despite all his chatter about forgiveness.

3) The RSC's staging in Shaftsbury Avenue's West End of what they called Jacobethan plays...obscure and rarely performed late Elizabethan/early Jacobean plays.  Of the five, we saw three: THE ROMAN ACTOR with the wondeful Anthony Sher; EASTWARD HO! and THE ISLAND PRINCESS.  As something of a theatrical archeologist, I loved seeing things like this.

4) The National also did an interesting coupling of plays THE COUNTRY WIFE by Goldsmith and a new play, LAUGHING MATTERS, about the first production of THE COUNTRY WIFE.

5) Tom Courtenay was delightful in a one-man show about poet Philip Larkin called PRETENDING TO BE ME.

6) Ian McKellen is always a delight onstage.  I've probably seen him about five times in different things. Though I found his production of DANCE OF DEATH disappointing to my memory of Olivier's version (only seen on tape)...It was still intriguing and he had the always-good Frances De LaTour playing opposite him.

7) I had an interesting theatrical experience this fall, when I was back in Kentucky at my alma mater, University of Kentucky, and spent two days giving my oral history of my years in the theatre there.  I also had a chance to do my dog and pony show of local boy makes good with the students.

8) Discovering the Broadway Archive Collection on DVD was another joyful theatre experience, reliving such productions as Ceremony of Innocence, ACT's Taming of the Shrew, and seeing our own Bruce Kimmel in Forget-Me-Not-Lane when he were but a wee twig of a sprig of a lad...

10) Likewise, discovering the American Film Theatre Productions out on DVD.  Last night  to commemorate the astonishing career of Sir Alan Bates, we watch his astonishing performance in BUTLEY.  Thank the theatre gods it has been perserved for posterity.

My happiest theatre CD moments have come through the auspices of  Mr. BK, who has provided me with some wonderful tapes I was unaware of or had slipped under my radar and the playing of which has brought some new songs to my attention.  The recordings of Guy Haines have helped in this regard...Just on Haines His Way, songs like You Must Believe In Spring; I'm Glad to See You Got What You Want; The Sweetest of Nights and The Finest of Days; and Gettin' Nowhere Fast (though I don't believe this last is from any show) are now a part of my life.

I do suggest that Mr. Haines or his producer should perhaps send a packet of stuff to KSURF 1260 or 570, the two standard stations in town and maybe try to get some air time for these various and sundried collections. Given that Mr. Kimmel's pal Gary Owens dj's for 570, this shouldn't be too hard.

Dr Jane, I thought you would likely have gotten a lot of snow last night there in the wilds of Ashland! My mom is in Medford and shouled e-mail her to see if she got snow too.

I had to park my car out in front of our building here at work as I couldn't get to where I normally park my car...just too much snow. I went to check on the car a few minutes ago and it was surrounded by fallen trees. So I hopped in and moved it but fast!

Happy 21st Birthday, DR Maya!

Good luck with the snow, Jane. I'm so glad not to be in Colorado or Canada anymore.

Still - I personally am freezing. Rodolfo should be singing about my cold hands. I'm sitting at the computer wearing a scarf and two sweaters - and this is California! My furnace went nuts last night - it suddenly became air conditioning.  Turns out it's the condenser and can't be fixed until tomorrow. While she's here visiting my daughter is sleeping on the pull-out in the living room, and she gets the one heater I own. So - as I said - I'm freezing my ass off.

Went to a late movie last night after another movie viewing date fell through because of acute (or a cute) misunderstanding by one of two parties. Which one of the two is a matter of conjecture. Anyway, we saw HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG, which, once you realize it's an OPERA, not a movie, is very good. The James Horner score I could've done without, however. When a film is so grand in emotional scale, we don't need the music to be even grander. Which brings me back to Rodolfo and my freezing hands. Cough...cough....

By the way, being stage deprived I have not seen a single play this year, so I do not have a 10 best list for you.

As for cast recording CDs the only two that I purchased in 2003 were the WILDCAT with Lucille Ball and Keith Andes and the new version of FLOWER DRUM SONG. So that would be my top two list! LOL!

Sad.  Sometimes on those shows, the older person doesn't seem to get it.....but she always did.  And in fact, she seemed a few steps ahead of some of the younger folks!

MBarnum: No live theatre this year? That settles it...you're coming to New York and I'm dragging you to every show possible. I'll even sleep on the couch and you can have my little twin bed if you need a place to stay. You simply cannot go on like this--missing out on some of the best and most enjoyable live entertainment available. Of course, New York theatre is not the only good theatre to see, but you simply MUST see SOMETHING next year. You must, you must, you must (that's three must's.)

By the way, I still haven't received the package you spoke of...did the post office return it to you, or is your package yet another victim of my thieving post-person?

Ha DR Diane: You sure did get an earful :)

I too am theatre deprived (even though it's one of my greatest passions). There are not many musicals here in montreal. Although I could see more in french. I wouldn't mind seeing the new mega musical, don juan.

I think my favorite theatre experience this year was Miss Saigon. Love that show. Always have.

I agree Jason. We have a very good theater group in Salem, The Pentacle Theater. I meant to see a couple of plays there this year but didn't. And there is lots for professional theater in Portland. I do need to get out more. Tom Wopat was even here not too long ago and I would love to have seen him (don't recall the play he was in, though).

I would think that your package would have arrived by now! But maybe with the holidays it is delayed. Where does the mailman leave your packages? Just out in the open?

When one has seen so much theater in his lifetime (plus participated in so much himself), I find it harder to rouse me out of my chair to go out to local theater. If I have close friends doing a show, I will go, or if someone offers me a free ticket, that's certainly an inducement. Otherwise, it would have to be a show I've never seen before and have wanted to see. Otherwise, I just can't summon up great desire to see another production of GODSPELL or THE MUSIC MAN.

My best theatre experience for 2003 is yet to happen: "The Full Monty" on New Year's Eve. I enjoyed a performance of "Bat Boy" Other productions I have seen this year (non-professional) were "Sweeney Todd", "Gigi" and "Pippin".
Theatre Cds (Thanks mostly to Dear Readers in the USA, and UK).
Amor
A Man Of No Importance
Nine
Little Shop Of Horrors
Man Of La Mancha
Avenue Q
Bat Boy
Urinetown (Well I didn't hear until this year)
DVD: Stritch, Barbara Cook and "Chess" (Swedish).

Looking back on 2003, I realize that I did not see very much theater this year.  No trips to New York or London not even any trips to Seattle for theater.  Other than the four productions that I was a member of the cast, I saw only two other shows the entire year. Is that possible?  yes, I guess so.  Both were local productions, both were musicals, and both surprised me with the quality of the productions.

The first was Little Shop of Horrors which was the show preceding Oliver out in Gig Harbor. Even though I prefer the cop-out ending of the movie, I have always liked that show.  It always seems like the little musical that could. For this production, I didn't know the director, I only knew one member of the cast, and I had heard some rumblings about troubled rehearsals so I went, not expecting a great deal.  It turned out that the pace was brisk, the cast likeable and talented, Audrey was a knockout, and even though Audrey II seemed more sewn than grown; the overall show was a delight.

Wow!  Long post.
To Be Continued.

MBarnum: I just called the post office. No dice on the package. :( She said she'd check with the driver and the mailperson tomorrow, but I'm afraid it's lost in the Bermuda Triangle that apparently is my mailbox. I'm sorry...I was looking forward to whatever it was that you were sending me. If it is indeed lost, I'll need to know what you sent me so I can report it to to the Postmaster General. This would make the eleventh package to go missing this year. Maybe it just got delayed due to the holidays...we'll see.

DR Panni brought up an interesting point... for those of you DRs who go to the opera, do you prefer to hear it sung in its original language or in English (or the native language of the country you are seeing it).

While I have always prefered it in the native language I often could not follow the plot.  Now thanks to supertitles it is much easier to follow what is going on.

Jason --- what do they call those devices at the Met on the back of the seats with the translations that they use instead of supertitles?

That would drive me totally insane knowing there was mail I was supposed to be getting and it was not arriving. Argh! Jason, you must be climbing the walls! When I order something (or when something is sent to me), I want it to arrive.

MattH: You have no idea...I'm going nuts. This is the eleventh--yes, the ELEVENTH--package that has not arrived at my apartment. I just spoke with the mail delivery guy here at MTI and he suggested I go through with the investigation from the Postmaster General. He said they're very sneaky and they always get their man, assuming it is an internal problem. Of course, it may be someone in my building stealing mail, but I really don't think that it is... I'm not sure how involved the P.G.'s investigation will go--will they investigate my building's tenants to see if they're the culprits? I don't know. But it is driving me absolutely batty and I can't stand it anymore. My dad is sending me a package sometime this week and I told him to send it here to MTI. We'll see if that one arrives...

1) Urinetown (B-way)
2) Hairspray (B-way)
3) Gypsy (B-way)
4) Annie Get Your Gun (summer stock)
5) She Loves Me (Univ. of Washington)
6) On Golden Pond (local)
7) Pirates of Penzance (high school)
8) West Side Story (Cent. Wash. Univ.)
9) Oliver (summer stock)
10) Big River (local)
11) Guys & Dolls (high school)
12) Footloose (high school)

Well, guess I did see a decent amount this year.  Plus 3 productions I was in: A Christmas Carol, Grease, and Sound of Music.  I think a high school South Pacific is first up for my 2004 viewing.

Thank you to the Dear Readers who sent me good thoughts, wishes and vibes.  I am married to an amazing, or simply crazy man.  Yesterday was the first day in fifteen years he went to bed sick.  After I posted he wants to shovel snow, he checked his temp again.  Since it came down some, out we went.  I had underestimated the depth of the snow.  In some places it was eighteen inches worth of wet heavy snow.  Good for making snowmen but the worst kind to shovel.  Every time I said “that’s it, I can’t shovel any more” we rested then continued on.  Even with Keith’s fever he shoveled twice as much as I did with far less complaining.  I think he even enjoyed having something to do.  We did the steepest 3/4th of the driveway.  Our only neighbors up our road found someone to plow the road.  They are currently cutting up trees that fell on the road, thereby making the road accessible for the snow plow.  Oh the joys of country living.  Maybe the person plowing can come finish our driveway for us when he is done with the road and our neighbor’s driveway.  Our neighbors who are higher up than we are have over two feet of snow.  Keith just came in the room.  He says he is shivering so bad he thinks he has malaria.  I guess crazy is the word, not amazing.  :)

Six solid days of rain predicted for Honolulu...yee haw.  I personally have no problem with rain, especially warm rain
and I will glady frolic in the ocean in the rain, provided that there is no lightning in the area.  The problem will be convincing
my buddy Tiana that 74 degrees is NOT too cold to go to the beach.  Maybe I can get her to just drop me off there.
She's such a wimp when it comes to weather.  A little rain, a few clouds, and she's camped out on the couch for days.
I just took a lovely two mile walk up one of the hills so I could see the view.  Incredible to see the ocean from more
than one side...at least, it is when one comes from Washington.  I got a little wet, but I see no problem with that.

She had sent it to me once upon a time and I immediately lost it! :)

Thanks!

Hmmmm.   I am not responsible for the smiley face on West Side Story.  Ghosts?

First happened to me when I made that post, as well.  It's the "8)" that does it automatically unless you disable smilies on the post.

Emily: I will be there, albeit around 6:30. It turns out I have to work until 6:00, but it really only takes about 15 min. to walk from MTI to 44th, so I should be there around 6:15 or 6:20. Yay, Ollie's!!

I can chat tonight - and it wouldn't be the first time I have talked to myself.

All right.....is the USA ready?

I am NOT sure.....but the HHW Gold Diggers Tour of 2004 is only hours away.

Here is the official theme song - be sure to learn it ladies.  And remember the two magic words:

PLEASE

and

THANK YOU

And Welcome to Los Estados Unidos!!!!

Oh, wow, thank you everyone so much for the lovely wishes.  You have helped to give me one of the best birthdays ever.

Today was really magical; I had sooo much fun.  My mom and I went to Les Halles (trust Jose, the resident HHW gourmand, to have known of it  :D) and the meal was just delish.  I had the Salade Niçoise and a glass of champagne.  The waitor (French born but with an impeccable American accent) was just a doll, and even though I totally wasn't expecting it, he brought me an on-the-house chocolate mousse (with happy birthday spelled out on the side of the plate in chocolate) and sang happy birthday to me.  Oh, and the restaurant itself was lovely...I felt like I was in a real Parisian brasserie.

I actually opted to see "Lost in Translation," but before that we went to Second Story Books in Dupont Circle, which is one of the coolest used book stores ever.  I bought a great old Beardsleyesque print of a man in an 18th century dress...yes, you heard me...dress.  I know, I am a weird chick.

The movie itself was wonderful, so nuanced.  Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson both turned in pitch-perfect performances.  I would love to see this movie win some Oscars.

Happy birthday Mayakins, the original skank and Hainsie/Kimlet princess! :D

Emily, only you would look upon my 21st birthday as an occasion to spew verbal abuse at me  ;)  I can't wait to meet everyone tomorrow!  I will definitely bring a camera.

Jason--If you can make it at 6:15 to Ollie's, that would be fine.  It's just that Wicked begins at 7, so the meeting might be a bit rushed...are you going to go piano-barring with us after the show?

Jed--You crack me up (and I love the new pic btw!)  Feel better soon!

Hate to say it but I agree with you, Jennifer.  I just ate as well and am suddenly not feeling very well.  Ugh.

I’m also tired with this being my first day back at work after the 4 day weekend. I think I’ll be hitting the hay pretty early tonight.

We had a nice day in the 70's  but there was just a touch of cool to the air. I was glad I took my jacket with me to work.

I hope you ladies have a wonderful time on your trip.  That’s another item on my wish list for the new year.  I would like a trip to NYC.  We’ll see.  If I make enough wishes ONE of them is bound to come true–right?

Can’t say I liked or dislike any plays this year as I didn’t really see any.  Sorry to hear you didn’t like DOTV.  I love the music and have heard from many others that thought it was good.

I have a question to ask–has anyone here heard of or (better still) have a recipe for Pumpkin Gobes?  One of my friends at work wants the recipe in the worst way and I told her I would check the net.  I just happened to think that  one of you might know what she is asking for.  Many thanks for any help.

[move=right,scroll,6,transparent,100%]Happy Happy Birthday Maya![/move]

Favorite CDs are usually the latest ones that I get, so the latest ones that I can remember getting are (in alphabetical order):
Avenue Q
Brownstone
Fade Out-Fade In (remastered reissue)
Little Shop of Horrors (new Broadway cast)
A Rock 'n' Roll Twelfth Night (locally written by a local semi-professional company--fabulous!  I think it's good enough to be on Broadway.  It has a great score...well, in my humble opinion--IMHO in Internet lingo)
Teddy and Alice (Thanks Tomovoz!)
Wicked
Zanna, Don't

As far as theater-going experiences go, this is the top five of what I've seen:
Gregory Hines (here in Olympia!)
Mark Twain, Tonight! (Hal Holbrook in Olympia, too)
A New Brain (local production)
Passion (local production)
Rags (an ages 8-16 children's theater production--but very good!)

No, no, JRand, that has to be

EAT YOUR F&*KING CORNFLAKES!!!!!!!!

The production that I was involved in (usher organizer and videotaper) extended our run also.  Twice!  The first time we had to get a different actress for one of the parts...the director actually took the role, so she knew it.  The second time they decided to extend, we actually had to go to another (and larger) theater.  Even after all of that, we practically sold out every performance, also!

Danise: Did you get to see the wig fight? "Wig Fight." Two words that should never go together, let alone be used as a choreographic term in a Broadway musical. Sorry Jason but I liked Mr. C's look.  Maybe not the pictures of what I saw in the previews (I thought he looked like the Joker to be honest  and held my breath hoping that would be changed) but the final costume looked just fine to my eyes.

I can't imagine him sounding bad doing a song either.   I might like someone else's version better--that's true--but I've never outright hated any song I've heard him do.

Just one note of "It Only Takes a Moment" in that nasally squeak he called a singing voice back then is enough to send my eardrums screaming in pain.

To be fair, his maturity has given his voice a much more sonically pleasing timbre.

Good evening!

I haven't read today's posts - well, the ones since I posted since this morning.. yet... But I did want to post at least once while I was still semi-awake...

What a wonderful way to spend my "day off" -> in rehearsal!  Truly, it was.

I started today on a new play by Craig Wright called Melissa Arctic.  It is being presented by the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC - what an amazing organization/space/cultural depository.  I don't want to give away too much about the play at this point and time, but I will say that:
-It's an adaptation of Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale.
-It has some music in it - which is why I'm on the team - duh!
-Craig Wright has had his work produced in DC and NYC - among other places.  His most recent piece being Recent Tragic Events, about 9/11.  He's also one of the staff writers for HBO's "Six Feet Under".
-It's an amazing cast.
-The whole "vibe" today was very fun and "functional" and open.
-I'm finally working with some of the "other" actors in town - the ones that do primarily straight plays.  It's so cool to be working with people I've only read about in articles and reviews.
-And there is definitely a sense of magic in the air. :)

I feel so fortunate to be a part of the process - and I'm basically just helping out the first two weeks of rehearsals as the assistant musical director.  And I'll be the "understudy" musician during the run.

But, really, it was an unexpected treat, pleasure and privilege to be in that rehearsal hall today.  Yes, I will have some long days ahead of me this week with rehearsals during the day and a show at night, but I have a feeling one process will just energize the other!

If any DRs want to check it out, the website for the Folger is http://www.folger.edu.  You'll find all the links to all their programs, including the theatre - and the play.

OH!  And I have a date for New Year's Eve!!!

:D

I get to "Drop a name" for a change. Give some credit to Mr Crawford's singing teacher Ian Adam who "took him in hand" for "Billy", "Barnum" and "Phantom". According to Ian, Michael did not even sing a few lines at a time for "Dolly" or "Forum". He could not "sing" and knew it.

DR Kerry: Fosca and Magnus respond quite well to "mush mush". Not enough love in the world - feel free to mush. It's not too early to wish you and MusicGuy "Happy New Year".

Whew!  What a lovely number of lovely posts to catch up on!  Now for a few more of my own before getting ready for bed... I have rehearsal at 10:00AM... and after not having to be up until Noon-ish for the past couple of weeks... Oy Vey!

DR Jason - Shall we assume those pics were taken with your new digital camera?

*And remind the GoldDiggers that it is a little bit of a hike from Ollie's to The Gerswin - at least I think it is - well, it's more than two blocks, and during "theatre rush hour".  -If they pick up their tickets earlier in the day...

Sorry to hear about your mail woes.  I had a minor one this week myself.  I mailed a Christmas present to a friend in Richmond from Fairfax, VA - from the nice big post office right by my parents house.  This is the post office that gets my letters to Richmond overnight automatically - and that's even if I drop my mail off at 11:45PM the night before!  Well, I sent this package off Monday afternoon via Priority Mail.  Well, it did not get there Tuesday... It did not get there Wednesday... It got there Saturday!?!?!  Well, it was delivered on Saturday.  The worst part was that I told the recipient that I had sent him something, so... It was frustrating for both of us.  -At least he knew that his local branch is not the most dependable... However, he did call to complain about the package not arriving Friday afternoon, and, lo and behold, it shows up Saturday, hmm....

But, still 11 packages?!?!?!?  May they all turn up sooner or later.  Or maybe a package meant for someone else will accidentally get delivered to your address!  Could be fun!?!?!

Jason, I was eating Hershey kisses. And I watched all my favorite cartoons: Arthur, George Shrinks, Cyberchase, and Sagwa.

A wonderful Chistmasy sort of day. My mail today included (along with an Amex bill!), a most welcome and meaningful Christmas card from a dear friend, a "wild and beautiful" calendar from Florida and the Carly Simon Christmas CD. HHW provides much joy to many of DR Kerry.

DR George - I had hoped to catch Gregory Hines live on stage one day myself.  So sad that he was taken away from us this year.  Let's hope that his brother, Maurice, will be hoofin' it up for years to come.  -What a card!

DR Jose. Jason is much too young for those "Fun" packages.
DR Sandra. Shouldn't you be doing something more constructive with your evening - like watching "Red Dwarf". You are it seems feeling better today.

It's sorta odd, but,Minx Anastasia will start to trot on her leash whenever I say "mush mush."  It must be in her Husky genes.

Oh, and if your date for New Year's Eve is Paul, then that leaves Hugh Jackman or Colin Farrell for me. . .maybe we'll have a triple date (one should have the same number of dates on New Year's Eve as EITHER the final digit of the year going out or the year coming in).

DR Jed - Oooh, A Light in the Piazza!  I'm hoping that it will make it's way around here one day - the production, well at least most of the cast, seems to be on mini-tour - with lots of down time between cities.  I believe it's going to opening again sometime, somewhere in early 2004.  Celia Keenan-Bolger is truly one of my favorite people to work with/be around/to know!  And also just get a kick out of saying her name, "Celia Keenan-Bolger!"

DR Tomovoz - Umm... You obviously haven't been in Jason's NYC apartment... nor slept on his couch...

-Whatever that means?!?!?

-It's getting late, and I need to get to bed.  I got a slight headache which could be due to the fact that I've actually up for 15 hours today - and it's not even 3:00AM! ;-)  Or it could be all the carbs leaving my body... Day two, so far, so good!

WHAT!?!?! If I hear one more disasparaging remark about my Gladiator ballet, you'll find this trumpet where the sun don't...

Yes, Jose, those spiffy pictures were taken with my spiffy new digital camera. I wasn't really paying much attention when I took them...they're not exactly the quality that I usually strive for. I'm still experimenting with the camera, and I hope to improve my photographic skills post haste.

Tonight I went to Barnes and Noble and spent the $50 gift card I got from my brother. With it I purchased the 2-DVD set of THE COLOR PURPLE (one of my very favorite movies) and the Beatles' Number One Hits CD. I'm a happy boy.

Oh, and before I turn in, here's my Top Ten - or Top Whatever #.  *I'll have to combine shows I've seen with show I've been in... My brain is about to shut down ;-)

In no particular order:

1) Take Me Out (Broadway)
2) Man of La Mancha (Revival-Broadway - was just worth it to hear Stokes sing "The Impossible Dream", and Marin Mazzie's "Aldonza"!)
3) South Pacific (Arena Stage) - In the pit for this one - yes, it opened in 2002, but closed in 2003.
4) Hair (VCU - my alma mater) - I was the MD.  It was amazing, and unfortunate, how this piece became with the outbreak of war in the Middle East.
5) I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change (Wayside Theatre) - I was the MD.  Yes, it's schlocky, but fun schlocky.  We also had a wonderful cast.  And "Shouldn't I Be Less In Love With You" has made my top ## list of theatre songs.
6) Camelot (Arena Stage) - Just one more week to go. :-(
7) 1776 (Ford's Theatre) - Again, in the pit.  Who'd have thunk that this "chestnut" could still be fresh and inspirational.
8) Cirque du Soleil's Varekai (LA) - Yes, I know it's not technically a "show", but maybe it is.  Sometimes the most moving images are the simplest.
9) Storm (Gold Coast, AUS) - What a piece of $!@!#@!#@!!!  I'm just glad I didn't actually spend any of my casino money to see it!  But even though I got comped in, I still felt like I deserved a refund!
10) -And since it was theatrically-related - at least the for me...  The NYC (and NE) Blackout of 2003!  We were in the middle of Camelot auditions.  Thankfully, we just had to walk down 17 flights of stairs - and not up them!  And, all in all, I had a very nice time in the blackout.  It was amazing to see NYers really pull together to help each other out.  Such a great vibe in the city that evening.  And I also ate rather well too - still remember those warm Italian pastries the next morning from the bakery in the Village near where I was staying.  And Amtrak was running on time southbound too!

Hmm.. That was a stretch...  I guess the only two shows I saw were Take Me Out, and La Mancha.  Oh, I did see Phantom again - but that was to see Hugh Panaro - and it was great catching up with him again after the show.

As for CDs... please refer to ever-growing pile of unopened CDs next to my stereo... Someday...  Oh, but, like BK, I do adore the L'il Abner re-issue - OH!!  And it looks like I may be doing a production of L'il Abner next season!  We'll see...

Ooohh... A 2-DVD set of The Color Purple!  I forgot this was out - I guess I just found the latest DVD to gather dust on my shelf!  *It came on HBO the other day... and, yes, I watched it again... and, yes, I cried again.

And as for your Gladiator ballet... It wasn't the ballet I was complaining about, it was the trumpet!

That was wonderfully vague!  Let the rumors (or rumours for our Oz friend) fly!!! :D  Maybe BK has himself a New Year's date, as well.  Happy to hear that you do, Jose, and hope that many more H/K's do.  No date here, but will be with a wonderful group of theatre friends, so that's good.

Thank you Jed. In Oz we've only had about 220 years to wreck the English language (sorry modify) so we have yet to catch up to you guys. I shall persist with flavouring and colouring just as i cling to programme and other archaic spelling. We still even use the whole range of vowel sounds (but they do have a "Nasal" sound). With such trivia in mind, I used to teach Shorthand and always thought Pitman a touch pedandic when they distinguished between symbols for th as in "thistle" and th as in "there". Not only that but they have a symbol for "Wh" as in "wheel". I don't go quite that far!

Oh yes, in my "Diction for Singers" class, we most definitely distinguished between thistle and there.  There was one word in particular that our prof insisted on a certain IPA spelling of that made no sense to any of us in the class.  Can't remember what the word was, but I remember her finally just saying, "I'm from Brooklyn, that's how it's pronounced in this class." :)

I stuff my hungry maw for forty minutes and come back to find three posts?  I will be right here on New Year's Rockin' Eve.  I don't do dates on New Years.  All who are here will be my collective date.

Alright, no New Year's date for BK, but we shouldn't let that quell our rumo(u)rs of tonight's movie company.  Oh no, no quelling here.  Kvelling, sure, just no quelling.

Heaven forbid that anyone think that I pronounce "This'll" the same as "thistle". It is just that I didn't think a shorthand system really needed to go that far! I don't know if the Greig system makes the distinction. Isn't this an educational site!

On New Year's Eve (8:00 PM Eastern time and 5:00 PM Pacific time), there's supposed to be an Internet radio show that I'm going to try and record..."try" being the operative word.  Actually, I have to try and find where I saved the link to the site before I can try and record it.  Hopefully the program won't be more than two hours because at 7:30, I've been invited by my sister and her boyfriend and her daughter to join them at a fairly fancy restaurant for dinner (they're paying!!).  I could stay home until about 7:15 since the restaurant's only down the hill from where I live...probably not more than three miles away.  After that, I'm coming home and staying inside.  In another other word:  Dateless.

And yes, Tomovoz, this can be a good thing...I do prefer figs. ;)
