Well, you've read the notes, perhaps one of the privileged read them on their new iPhone, and now it is time for you to post until the rotten cows come home.

I'll no doubt think of more later but I was impressed with CG special effects in LOTR - particularly the "ghosts".

One of my favourite movies is 2001.  The effects may not be "special" these days but they still look good to me. I don't feel the same about the Star Wars effects.

And for a "Simple" but very effective piece of filming, the final walking on water scene in "Being There".

When I was a kid I thought Cecil B's parting of the Red Sea was wonderful.

(Of course now I know so much more and that Val Kilmer is Moses)

All righty-dighty, here is a little Unseemly Trivia Contest question.  Don't forget - do NOT post your answers to the site - send them to me at haineshisway@aol.com.

This revival of a play by a well-known playwright (but not one of the playwright's most well-known plays, at least to me) eked out a mere three months, despite its illustrious company of players.  But, what makes this production fascinating is that its director would soon direct a wildly successful musical, and its cast, save for three people, had or would all star in classic Broadway musicals.  This play also had incidental music by a composer who would go on to write the music for the wildly successful musical that this revival's director would soon direct.  All but one of the people who had or would star in classic musicals would win Tony Awards for their performances.

Name the play and the author.

Name the cast members who had or would go onto star in classic musicals, name the musicals, and name the Tony winners.

Name the director and the musical he would soon direct.

Name the composer who wrote the incidental music and who would soon write the score to the successful musical that the director would soon direct.

The Parting of the Red Sea (10 Commandments)
Ray Harryhausen Films
Earthquake/San Franscisco
Time Machine
War of the Worlds (Pal version)
Close Encounters of a 3rd Kind

I like visual effects pre CGI there was a real art to them. Model making, matte paitings.

Some off the top of my head

Yes, MR BK watched ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN....I have never seen it as it is presented...slightly letterboxed.

It looks fine....and the Ronald Stein score is one of my favorites.  Frank Chase (son of writer Borden Chase [Red River] and brother of dancer Barrie Chase) has always been a favorite as Charlie the dancing Deputy.  Frank made a few films and then went on to write a lot of television episodes, especially for "Bonanza."

And of course Miss Allison in her only top billed role.  Her Nancy must be the Paris Hilton of her day, since the news reporter speaks to her personally about her marital discord.

Saturday morning greetings!  I slept poorly last night, coughing.  But nothin's gonna ruin my fun weekend in the Big Apple, so I'm up, showered, and ready for another day.  DH Richard and I are seeing the matinee of Inherit the Wind, going to the party at Fred & Skip's, and seeing Curtains tonight.

So is this Brooklyn Diner breakfast at 10am?

Good morning Drs and studlies and lovelies and vixens and vamps.....

Well, I am just popping in for a moment to say "good morning," and to say what a thrilling day yesterday was.  It was so filled with fun, good cheer, wonderful company, fantastic food..... and then was capped off with an evening that I almost can't describe, at the current production of ACL.

Many of you know of the close friendship that Kerry and I had the privelage of sharing with one of the original cast members of ACL.  I haven't seen the show in several decades, because it brings up such intense emotions of sadness and loss in me.

But last night we had fantastic seats on the 10th row aisle (thank you Baayork and Jose!), and I just let myself dissolve into a puddle for just about the entire show.  Joey Dudding, who played the role of Mark, was very good indeed, and at times his stance and body language were so much like Rick's that it was eerie (in a good sweet way). And Jason Tam (who played the role of Paul) was extraordinary in the depth of his emotion.

And now I can't see through my watery eyes again as I try to type this, so I will just say a very big THANK YOU to all of my great friends here in New York for being such great company all week.

And a heartfelt thank you and "world's biggest hug" to dear Jose for guiding me around, showing me his NYC, letting me cry when I needed to, laughing a lot with me, and just being the sweet person that he is.  I am lucky to know you Jose !

Good morning, all! DR MBarnum in honor of OKLAHOMA! is going through a Mikey-makes-up-his-mind ballet and the footwork is frightening! Central Park or Virgin Megastore? When to move his trunks and hatboxes - and dorothy bag - to Rodzinski's?  Oy! I'm going to throw him off that fire escape!

All I can think of at the moment is the Red Sea parting from THE TEN COMMANDMENTS.

155 W. 43rd Street
Between Broadway and 6th Ave.  -It's basically on the corner of Broadway and 43rd. since that's where Broadway "bends".

I'll probably finish the remaining three or so ACTION episodes this afternoon, and if there's time, I'll put in the last disc in the MURDER SHE WROTE set. I think there about five episodes left from season five to view.

Tonight, I'll be watching WOMAN IN THE DUNES, the only film in this newTeshigahara Criterion box that I have previously seen (and I saw it so long ago that my memory is foggy indeed).

Also tonight is the HBO premiere of Robert Altman's last film A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION. I didn't see it in the theater nor on DVD, so I'll be recording it on HBO-HD, and I will get to it in a few days. Not sure if I can fit it in this weekend due to an overwhelming stack of DVDs that must be watched and that have priority over the things recorded off TV.

Continued reading in BROADWAY BABYLON last night before turning out the light, and it's a fun, easy read. Most of the background on these theater artists was already known to me having read biographies or autobiographies of the folks he's covered thus far (Merman, Tennessee Williams, William Inge), but the comments on them by their colleagues in the business have sometimes been most illuminating and are what give the book its kick.

There's an upcoming chapter on Tony Perkins that I'm looking forward to. Can't remember what's up next, however.

I too am up. Probably too  late to run over to the Brooklyn Diner, doggone it.

It was great seeing the crowd the other night, meeting MusicGuy and Singdaw, two more great stars in the HHW constellation. I had to bolt early to see one of my favorite singers, Sarah Shannon perform at Joe's Pub. Fantastic. Although ill-attended.

Last night Barnum met up with me at a Turkish restaurant nearby and I was the lone soul to attend the Bollywood film of his choosing. We thought we were going to a comedy and it turned out to be an intense action-adventure musical based that took place in Hong Kong. It was rather mind-blowing, I must admit, and I was surprised to find I enjoyed it. Really good acting.

Homophobic actor Isiah Washington has now brought up the race card over his recent firing from Grey's Anatomy.

He first denied it.

Said it twice.

Tried to blame on TR Knight as being jealous of him

and now the race card

I apologized and showed my remorse for what I said and for the pain I caused anyone. If a black man can't get forgiveness in this country, when so many other people like Robert Downey, Jr. and the governor of California get second and third chances... I think that says a lot about race and this country where we stand.

He also said

He said that the network's decision to send him to rehab after he used the offensive term was an attempt at "reprogramming" him. "There is no rehab for homophobia -- that was just some crap being put out by the network," he told the magazine." I went into an executive counseling program which many people in this industry know about and go to. They knew what the program was but chose to call it what they wanted to fit their agenda."

I think he should know when to shutup. People will forget about (I think) but to keep it going will not look good for him. They won't say it but what network would want him on one of his shows? If he is goign to slam the hand that fed him?

It's dinner theater time. I can see it now Isiah Washinton in

In other news, I just had an hour-long conversation with a choreograher - very nice, very positive, and I liked him and hired him - Adam Cates his name is - the credit I liked most for him is that he assisted Tommy Tune on Dr. Dolittle, so he's proficient in tap, and he's also worked with my friend Patti Columbo.  And, as it turns out, his boyfriend is an MD (currently doing I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change in NY) and he'll be sending me his resume, so maybe we'll just keep it all in the family and hire him.  Does anyone of our New York pros know Stephen (or Steven) Sarri?

So happy we've got the choreography position taken care of.  I told him he could feel free to totally come up with his own Brain Tap choreography from scratch (since we'll have real honest-to-goodness ensemble people who can dance), and I told him as far as my staging of the musical numbers, he was free to make suggestions and/or embellish if he thought that was the thing to do.  But, never fear - the Kimmel hands will be staying put.

Good afternoon. Something odd happened today. I was at the office working, and when I went to lock up and set the alarm, the thing kept telling me that a window was ajar and I couldn't set the alarm until I opened and slammed all the windows. Nothing was ajar when I unalarmed it earlier. I did see someone wandering around the property, though. Maybe they tried the windows?

This isn't a review, but click HERE (http://www.theolympian.com/arts/story/147907.html) for a write-up about our production where Pug (the director) talks about her concept. :) There's also a picture of the woman who's playing Kate (this picture is used on the poster) but in the show, she doesn't wear the horns.

The only two episodes left in the set are actually two parts of the same story - the famous one that features Jean Simmons as a murder mystery author-rival of Jessica's. The very young Daniel MacDonald plays her stepson in this two-parter and Ken Howard is Jean's husband. Looking forward to seeing this outstanding mystery story again. Simmons is so good that she earned an Emmy nomination for her performance.

I have forgotten to talk about the TOD every time I've been on-line today.

Like others, I was awed by the effects in THE TEN COMMANDMENTS when I first saw the film in the theater as a young boy.

I also think some of the effects in THE WIZARD OF OZ are stupendous even now.

As for CGI, I was bowled over by JURASSIC PARK when I first saw it on a midnight showing the (early) day of its official opening. Nothing I've seen since has topped it though some of the effects in the HARRY POTTER movies have certainly equaled it.

Tonight, I began by watching "Mirror, Mirror On the Wall" episodes of MURDER SHE WROTE that ended the fifth season in grand style. Besides Jean Simmons (as Jessica's mystery writer rival who's on the decline), Ken Howard, and Daniel McDonald that I mentioned earlier, also in the guest cast were David Hedison, Shelley Fabares, and Richard Anderson. A first rate cast in a very well done mystery.

Then, I watched the entirety of WOMAN IN THE DUNES. It's a long movie at almost 2 1/2 hours, and there isn't one boring moment in the entire film. Haunting, mesmerizing in its direction and performances (especially Eiji Okada as the desperate man), superb photography, and despite a mono soundtrack, one of the most evocative mixes of music and sound ever. Really a phenomenal movie.

Matt - When you say "I don't understand why we can't be satisfied with what we have instead of always wanting something else. Seems like a waste of energy to me," I assume you're just having fun, right?  I know it sounds silly to want more postings for their own sake, but it's fun to shoot for records, isn't it, be they monthly or daily.  And of course, wanting something else is what makes for progress as a general matter, both in terms of personal accomplishment and making our small mark on the world we live in, be it moving other people by a performance in a local theater or leaving behind an artsitic work that could be done after you're gone or having  arelationship or whatever.

Perhaps you were kidding around.  If so, never mind.

No, I wasn't kidding. Numbers for numbers sake makes no sense to me. I'd rather have ten posts of quality than a hundred one word or one sentence posts here just for the sake of adding numbers for a total. I understand that people have milestones of posting numbers they shoot for individually, but to complain about having 200 posts instead of 600 posts just for the sake of an arbitrary number doesn't compute for me.

I don't mean to spoil anyone's good times in having fun with posting. But I still come here to read about people's days, their activities, their lives, and if we get only 200 posts for a specific day, I just don't see the problem.

What a swell party this was! First, a wonderful fete chez Skip and Fred which was a delightful melange of wonderful food, interesting company, and sparkling conversation.  A dinner invitation to West 43rd Street is something to be longed for.  The hosts are never thanked enough for their efforts, so thank you, DR FJL and Skip. You are the salt of the earth, two of the best.

Then, off to CURTAINS, which is vastly improved since the third preview DR Jose and I caught with DR Cillaliz.  Jason Daniely was out so we saw everyone but him in the original cast.  Matt Farnsworth played Jason's role and was quite good.  After the show, I took DRS Ginny, MBarnum, Jose, Jason, and DH Richard backstage to meet the wonderful Karen Ziemba.  We also saw my friends Noah Racey and John Bolton.  All in all, a wonderful evening out.

Hello All,

Long day at Saturday in the Park.  Lovely weather. I spent the afternoon on a friend's front porch across the street from the park. With the hills you can't see the band shell, but you can hear it.  It was lovely. There was shade and music and beer and a flush toilet instead of a port-a-pottie.

I did go to the concert a few times, but mostly stayed away from the crowds.

B.B. King sounded great. I went over for the beginning of his set, then listened from a distance.  He has some trouble getting around and joked about being old and sitting in a chair, but he played. I left before the fireworks. There are between 20,000 and 30,000 people in an area that holds the people fine, but doesn't deal with all the cars very well.  I decided to get home before the crowd. Glad I did

This was followed by Alexandro Jodorosky's THE HOLY MOUNTAIN.  Loopy, trippy and ultimately quite satisfying with a stellar dvd presentation.
Odd thing, both film had exploding toads. . . . :o

And then came the final Saturday matinee of Company.  Yes, this production has had it's admirers and detractors, and I understand the kudos and criticisms, and I'd have to count myself in among the admirers.

Raul Esparza was simply awesome!  A truly amazing, one-of-a-kind performance.  His acting was truly phenomenal, and his singing was beautiful when called for and raw when called for - and he sounded a lot better than he did on The Tonys and even the OCR of this revival.  The sweetness in his voice during "Someone is Waiting" was particularly affecting.

The device/conceit/gimmick of the actors playing instruments bothered me slightly early on, but it grew on me.  And since the ensemble for this show is sizable - at least in comparison to last season's Sweeney Todd - there were more players, thus more instruments to fill out the orchestral sound.  I particularly enjoyed the piano and bass work of Matt Castle - who has had a career of composer, conductor and musician before this acting turn.

The show did start almost 20 minutes late due to the TV cameras being set up.  Lonny Price, who happened to be the director for the TV version of this John Doyle production, came out before the show, and introduced the cameras and camera-men, as well as reminding people to turn off your cell-phones and beepers - "You don't want to be reminded when you watch the DVD that you forgot to turn off your cell phone."  ;)

But once the lights went down... WOW!  And the audience was with the actors on stage from moment one.  There was a great energy in the house.  Truly one of my top theatrical experiences.

After the show, I happened to run into Barbara Walsh's husband outside the theatre.  We worked a couple of times back down in Richmond, Violet and Richmond.  Then it also turned out that another Richmond director had come up for the weekend, so Jack took us backstage to see Barbara.  It was great getting to see her again, and her "Joanne" really was a total reinvention of the part.  And I told her so.

Then after checking at the Box Office and finding out that there were some house row seats available, I went ahead and purchased a ticket to see Curtains.  I was sitting in Row H, DR MBarnum was in Row J, and DRs elmore, Ginny, and Richard were in Row M.  We all had great seats.  And we all enjoyed the show.

As DR elmore mentioned, they've really done a good amount of work on the show since previews.  I didn't pick up any drastic changes, but I did catch a few new intros and outros, a couple of new jokes, and some clarifications and simplifications of plot points in the book.

And Thanks to DR elmore for taking us all back up to Karen Ziemba's dressing room after the show (again).

OH!  And I did take some photographic proof of DR MBarnum's FIRST Broadway Show!  :D

I actually wonder what else a discussion board could be measured by in terms of "tangible" measures of popularity and participation besides number of posts or page views.

I think a useful measure is noting how many new faces appear - and soon become old hands: Miss Karen, Singsaw, Edisaurus, etc.

Another interesting metric might be the number of purchases (books/CDs/DVDs) are made based on another poster's recommendation.

My only regret is that we have so few non-US posters.

OH!  And I did take some photographic proof of DR MBarnum's FIRST Broadway Show!  :D

No pictures of Barnum re-registering his Virginity at the Megastore?

OOOOH!!!!!!!  Before I forget again....

So, we're in a cab heading back from the East Village the other night - DRs elmore, MBarnum and myself.  Michael starts checking out the various stores we're passing...

"Pa Pa Ya King... Papa Yaking..."

PAPAYA KING

:)

I guess he still had Bollywood on the brain from his trip to the video store.

-In any case, all of three of us had a good, hearty laugh.

Hmmm...all alone!

If I leave now and bk returns to an "empty" board there will be hell to pay!

Guess I'll go read today's Ann Coulter column

So for those of you who haven't read any of my five best-selling books: Liberals are driven by Satan and lie constantly.

Note to BK:

Based on TV interviews, many of the folks standing in line all-night to get an iPhone were youngsters expecting to make a killing by re-selling their purchase on eBay - and based on Play Station/XBox precedents, they might well succeed.

Finally home from Cabaret and a late-night supper with Miss Karen and Boo-Key, as well as Miss Adriana Patti.  I shall now write Ye Olde Notes in a hurry.
