I shouldn't be up this early, but I couldn't sleep well. So, I did my readings for an online course I'm taking -- and if that couldn't put me back to sleep, nothing can.

Tuesday morning greetings!  Busy morning for me - doctor's appointment, library book pick-up, jewelry store for a watch battery, grocery store.  This afternoon I have to make a batch of caramel corn - part of it is for a door prize I'm donating to a Thursday conference, part of it is for my family, none of it is for me (well, maybe a bite...)

TOD: The recent revival of "Gypsy" was a revelation to me. I had seen the show many times in the past, but never one as powerful as this, and part of that was because of Patti LuPone. She was amazing in how she won you over and then chewed you up for getting too close. She was the most charming and evil monster imaginable. Brilliant.

Other memorables on the musicals list must include Anita Morris in "Nine," Bernadette Peters in "Sunday in the Park with George," John McMartin and Barbara Barrie in "A Little Night Music" (a lot of Sondheim on that list), and Carol Channing in "Hello, Dolly!"

As for non-musicals, two shows stick out in my mind. I saw George Furth's "Precious Sons" in an early preview, and both Judith Ivey and Ed Harris blew me away, especially at the end where she willfully destroys her husband and he willingly allows it to happen. I thought about that scene for weeks after that it was so chilling. I understand it was watered down by opening, but what I saw was as shocking and painful as the ending of "Suddenly Last Summer."

On a lighter note, I also loved the entire cast of the Rosemary Harris revival of "Hay Fever," in which the incomparable Charles Kimbrough gave a deftly funny performance that stole the show from a cast of scene-stealers. Deborah Rush was also hysterical in that.

I got to buy all the ingredients for my birthday dinner tonight. And I get the fun of making much of it.

My brother=in-law is grilling the NY strips and we're going to try grilling broccoli, but I'm also making mashed cauliflower, several salads, including fennel and orange, plus a raspberry tart for dessert. And depending on time, maybe another dish or two, just for fun.

TOD:

I saw Jason Robards do HUGHIE, which was quite memorable.

Also, Mary Martin and Robert Preston in I DO!  I DO!

But, the greatest performance I ever saw was Edward Everett Horton doing a production of THE WHITE SHEEP OF THE FAMILY at the Cirque Playhouse in Seattle.

His timing and line delivery were absolutely brilliant.

Good morning, all! My email has been acting screwy all morning but it's hopefully cleared up now. I had to send mp3 files of chorus parts to the ensemble singers on the Herbert project and one kept getting bounced back. I hope everything else went through.

Thank you all for the sympathy for James Stovall. I gather it was his heart, but there seems to be nothing conclusive yet. He was a good man.

This morning, I meet Skip Kennon at Toyland for more edits on the Harlequinade, which is endless.

TOD:
  Musicals:
      1. Carol Channing: HELLO DOLLY!
      2. Lonny Price: MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG, the only brilliant performance in the original disaster; he should leave his lousy directing work and go back to being a wonderful actor
      3. Glynis Johns: A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC
   Plays:
      1. Denis O'Hare: TAKE ME OUT
      2. Harvey Fierstein: TORCH SONG TRILOGY
      3. Frances Sternhagen: DRIVING MISS DAISY

Ruth Buzzi, the 3 "Bond" girls, Meredith Baxter & Michael Gross and David Hedison.

Actually, Jennifer Korbin, who was sitting on the other side of us, did well, too...but some of the guys who came up to her were really creepy.

For those who watch THE AMAZING RACE who are your favorite teams so far?

I personally am thrilled that we have such strong all female teams. There are 3 that I think have a chance to do well. And I actually like all 3:

1.volleyball women
2.home shopping hosts
3.doctors

I don't know enough about them yet to know which will be my favorite. But I thought all 3 teams had potential.

I agree with several of the best performances choices already.  Certainly Ian McKellan in Amadeus, which was absolutely a brilliant tour de force the likes I've never seen.  I also saw Mr. Robards in Hughie and he was magnificent.  And Jennifer Holliday was incredible, too.  But I'd add to the musical list - Tammy Grimes in Molly Brown, Joel Grey in Stop the World, I Want to Get Off, Robert Morse in Sugar, William Daniels in 1776. Dorothy Collins in Follies.  For plays, I'd also add Hermione Gingold in Oh, Dad, Poor Dad, Mama's Hung You in the Closet and I'm Feelin' So Sad, Kendall Clark and Michaele Myers in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf (the matinee tour cast), Tammy Grimes and Brian Bedford in Private Lives, Anthony Hopkins in Equus (a brilliant turn), Mary Louise Parker in Prelude to a Kiss and Communicating Doors, and Lily Tomlin in The Search for Intelligent Signs of Life in the Universe.

I took an instant dislike for the volleyball women--the way they so quickly labled the accapella boys as "Glee" and "Nerds" was a turn off.  But I agree with your other two picks as favs.  I've been curious for some time now how a diabetic would handle being in the race (though I wonder about that one blood sugar reading she took while driving the car--over 300?!?)  And I've liked the Home Shoppers Club woman since I first saw that watermelon clip a few weeks ago.

As for the rest of the teams--yeesh!  I'm surprised some of these people were able to find their way to the TAR auditions...

As for the Topic of the Day...

As for Actor in a Musical - Raśl Esparza as Georges/George in Sunday in the Park with George at the Kennedy Center. I also really liked his Charley Kringas in Merrily We Roll Along during the Sondheim Celebration.  OH! And, yes, his Bobby in Company. I practically crumbled during his "Being Alive".  -It's just too bad that the filmed version concentrated too much on close-ups instead of stage pictures.

As for Actress in a Musical - I'd have to go with Patti LuPone's Mama Rose in the recent revival of Gypsy too.  However, I found her more real and terrifying - and less-mannered - during her original run at City Center.  -Although, I have a feeling most of the tweaks that took place between City Center and the St. James were more the doing of Mr. Laurents than Ms. LuPone.

As for Actress in a Play - Lily Rabe in The Merchant of Venice this past summer in Shakespeare in the Park.

As for Actor in a Play - Hmmm... The only thing coming to my mind right now is the whole ensemble of The History Boys or Journey's End.

Greetings from Toyland! With my luck, I'll be in a tornado when I leave here around 2pm; things have gone too well thus far today: the new keys, when I tried them here, worked fine, and I learned from my accountant that my NY State tax bill is all paid off, so no more monthly deductions of $233 from my checking account.

I just heard from our DR TCB on his office email; his home computer has died.

Dear DR Druxy,

Have you ever been to the Congress Street Bridge to watch the bats fly out at dusk?

I have done this once, and from a boat in the middle of the lake near the bridge, so the bats were flying overhead. It was one of the most spectacular things I've ever witnessed. Millions of bats kept coming out from their hiding place under the bridge -- and in some weird formation. They filed out in a line that lasted more than 10 minutes.

We don't know who came up with those nicknames. But I don't find "glee" or "nerds" to be rude or that far off.  I just hope those boys continue to improve. They seemed nice. And I loved listening to them sing.
Title: Re: 109 IN THE SHADE

Teem Glee seemed like a good nickname for those two guys. I didn't think "nerds" was a very good, or nice, description for them, however.

The only team I dislike is the couple that includes that boastful, argumentative guy. His girlfriend seems nice, but someone needs to tell her that she could do a lot better then him.

My favorite team is the father/daughter team.

I like the tattooed team, in that they seem nice, but I don't hold out much hope for them surviving this game for very long. LOL!

The home shopping hosts work well together, and that could get them pretty far.

I have not really gotten to know the other teams well enough to form much of an opinion, yet.

COCO BEFORE CHANEL - I liked this movie a lot

HANGOVER - funny movie with some nice guys in it

I truly enjoy THE HANGOVER.  It's one of those movies that I thought I was going to hate, because I thought it was a *teen* comedy along the lines of AMERICAN PIE et al. . .BUT, I laughed many, many times while viewing THE HANGOVER.  The guys are great together and the story is quite humorous, too.

I haven't heard from Mr. Bobrick as to whether today is happening.  Mr. Barry Pearl, who brought me into the project and was working on this, called last night to tell me he's gotten a job - on a boat - as one of a group of entertainers, and this job, which officially begins (sails) on my birthday this year keeps him on the boat for eight months!  He won't be back until September of 2011 or something like that.  It's decent money, apparently, and obviously eight months of steady work is a great thing - but he is a better man than I, Gunga Din.  I could not do it - could not be away for eight months, although that's what happens when you're in a national tour and I kind of always wanted to do that.  But being on a boat for eight months, even though the boat obviously stops in certain places, well, I could barely take the two WEEKS I was on the Sitmar cruise shooting The Partridge Family.  But good on Barry, and he was just offered it - didn't even have to audition.

All 22 cartons have arrived in Oxford, OH and I am happy they are there. I had a lovely time with Mr Skip Kennon at Toyland, and we resume this endless number tomorrow.

I have been reading the funniest novel, FOOL, a bawdy yet strangely poignant retelling of KING LEAR told by the Fool. It's isn't heartbreaking like Jane Smiley's wonderful A THOUSAND ACRES, but I suspect, since it follows LEAR closely, that we are in for much sorrow behind the guffaws. I'm at the point where King Lear and his hundred knights have gone to sstay at Goneril's castle, Cordelia is married to the King of France, and the Fool and the disguised Kent have gone to Birnham Wood to ask the Weird Sisters named Parsley, Sage and Rosemary to restore Lear's sanity.

LOL DR ELMORE - I may have to get that book.

It's outrageously bawdy, DR JRand60. I think you'd love it. There are several important characters that Shakespeare omitted from the play: the Mother Abbess who raised the Fool from a child at the convent and who I suspect is either a man in drag or a major bull dyke helping young nuns with their evening prayers; Drool, the Fool's apprentice jester; Thalia, a nun buried alive, and others.

Here's something amusing:  While I was in Drama Book Shop waiting to begin the reading I was looking at some new books, including one by Mickey Rapkin about Stage Door Manor.  For those who've read my new book, you know that in 1969 I moved to NY and lived in Brooklyn in an apartment in the building in which my Aunt Minnie (my father's sister) and Uncle Rube lived.  And they also occur in the first Kritzer book, albeit under other names.  Uncle Rube and Aunt Minnie had a son named Leonard - we saw him several times when we were living there - a very nice chap (saw him a few times in LA, too).  Oh, and Uncle Rube's last name was Rapkin.  Oh, and Leonard had a son named Mickey.  Isn't that funny?

I like the tattooed team, in that they seem nice, but I don't hold out much hope for them surviving this game for very long. LOL!

Well I do agree with you that I don't hold out much hope for the tattooed team.

But I am not a big fan of the father/daughter (in fact i had to think hard to know who you meant).  The girl (pageant girl) just seems so over the top sweet. I am sure they are nice. But I don't hold out much hope for them either.

I do think the father/son seem funny and hope we can see more of that.

I really don't hold out much hope for the bio mother/daughter. They don't know each other to work well together. And they don't seem very good at the challenges.

Gotta give the woman who got slammed with a watermelon in her face credit, that had to hurt and she just got up and nailed that suit of armor...you go girl  or is it armour

Thanks George.  They are different and I wasn't sure I wanted one at first, but when I went back today and stood by it, I was glad I decided to buy it.   I like to collect art by local artists. This is the first sculpture I've gotten.  It's by a woman from near Omaha. I met her at the party after the art walk and it was really fun to hear how she sculpted the cats.  The stand is a disk brake, they are made of rebar and steel, styrafoam inside and cement on the outside.   They are REALLY heavy.  She used several colors of cement stain and sealed them so they can be outside.   Of course I don't think cats belong outside, so mine will be living by my big fireplace.

We had a really nice dinner of grilled New York strip steaks and shrimp wrapped in bacon. There were a pair of salads, a slaw with a spicy ginger dressing and a mix of orange and fennel with almond slivers. We also had grilled broccoli and mashed cauliflower with Parmesan cheese on top and a spread of olives, white anchovies and watermelon radish as snacks. For dessert, I made my raspberry tart with plenty of butter and almonds in it.

Best of all, I was able to share it with my sister, brother-in-law and nephew. Great evening. And I ate way too much.

Thanks Jeanne.  There's a place for it right by my fireplace. I don't want to wait until the end of the month to get it, but they are leaving the sculptures in the meadow for people to walk around all month

For those not familiar with LA weather, one report said it was 102 in Santa Monica yesterday. Another report said 107. Both are unheard of. Most homes in the area do not have air conditioning.

Yet I was surprised you don't have it. ;D  My parents had air in the kitchen & the bedroom when I was young.  I still remember nights my sister & I slept on the kitchen floor.

Jane, I've never had AC in any of the places I've lived in LA. My aunt and uncle lived around the corner from you on Aiken Ave and they didn't have it, either. The one exception is the home of my friend in the Hollywood Hills. He has EVERYTHING!

Watching a motion picture on Blu and Ray - halfway through, but in an hour I have to go to see the two clip reels for JMK's event.  Then I'll probably grab a bite to eat - I had my sandwich at eleven-thirty and that's surely not enough to eat for a whole day.  I also did manage a mile and a half jog.

I also had a telephonic call from David Wechter's son, Zach, who is in film school right now.  He's asked me to play a co-starring role in a short film he's written and is directing.  The dates sort of work, but I'm not sure I'll be up for learning lines - I told him to send me the script and that we'd start there.

Yes, in Disneyland.  The Walt Disney World version is a "updated" bastardized thing featuring the bird from "Aladdin" - it makes me ill

Back from seeing the two clip reels - one for acting - one for writing and directing.  I made some changes in placement, shortened a couple of them and I now have to go buy season one of Happy Days so we can include that.  It seems to be fun and hopefully the audience won't get bored.

Then Doug Haverty and I went to Marie Callender's - I hadn't eaten since my sandwich and no fries.  I had a small dinner salad with ranch dressing, and their lemon-crusted salmon, which was really good.  The best thing about it is, of course, that it and the rice and vegetables that accompany it all come to 670 calories.

I've been trying to get used to getting to work earlier (around 9:15 a.m. instead of 11:15 a.m...or so), but I haven't quite gotten used the whole "getting to bed earlier" concept.  But since I don't have any more TV to watch tonight, I'm going to go to bed NOW!
