Title: PRAY FOR ROSEMARY'S BABY
Post by: bk on January 09, 2006, 12:43:54 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've prayed for Rosemary's Baby, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they, too, are praying for Rosemary's Baby, after which, they personally told me they'd be home.

Good morning all!

Wow!  First post!

It was cold in the state of Sunshine this past weekend so I spent a lot of time staying warm under the covers and when I was up, I played with the new DVD recorder.

I am happy to say that I now know how to record from my VCR to the DVD.  That means that all the old shows (Like Beauty and the Beast) can now be transfered over.  Yea!

Gotta run for the bus.

Have a wonderful day all!

Vibes to those who need them!

Break a leg vibes to BK and the new play!

I'm praying!  I'm praying!  And I can't wait to hear all about it!

Just wish I could be there.  That darn surgery is really going to kill my travel time.  Sigh.

The good news is that I will have a week built back up by fall so.......   :D

Good morning, all!  Well, after a solid 12 hours in bed, I still feel under the weather, but the chills and tremors are gone.  I will dress and putter about the house today.  I don't think I'll be going out.

Dear Friend BK, break a leg tonight!  I'm sending positive vibes for a successful preview!

TOD:
My favorite albums were the Columbia cast recordings with the wonderful  photos: CAMELOT, KEAN, and BYE BYE BIRDIE were my favorites.
The tackiest were the old London classical covers like SCHEHERAZADE with the belly dancer; there were many of them, all equally tasteless.

Thanks to DRJANE, DRJOSE, and DRGEORGE for their comments on my elevated clerical status (and others including DRMBARNUM) - and DRJANE I am wearing another pair of skinny pants today, so I am happy about that again.

My meeting wasn't as long and boring as DRLAURA's.....we set the dates for the auditions....SEUSSICAL has to audition The Cat early because for some reason there are two different scripts/scores depending on whether The Cat is played by a male or a female and MTI must know which set we need - which makes sense....just very different.

The original painting used on this LP cover hangs in the living room of a home in Encino.  8)

I will save picture space and just mention a few others by name:

STATE FAIR soundtrack 1962
Pat Boone record covers for DOT were very flattering
The Beatles, especially MEET THE BEATLES and A HARD DAY'S NIGHT

Weirdest or strangest....hmmmm

I think the most unusual one was the original cast album for Do Re Mi with Phil Silvers and Nancy Walker. It was a black cover and a neon orangey color. What made it unusal is that the cover had various cut outs that revealed the inside of the job jacket.

Here is a picture of one of the first places we visited after arriving in Dublin (Anthony had to spend time sleeping to get over the jet lag). It's called Malahide Castle. It's in Dublin County. Parts of it look like a castle and it was built long ago but it has been renovated over the years so that much of it looks like state apartments more than an actual castle. It was still a fun place to tour.

As a pre-teen, In loved the album packaging for the movie of THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE.  It was like an oversized book, and had the silliest, chattiest liner notes.  I had never seen anything like it, and at the time i loved it.  Plus I got it for 99 cents.

BK - Break a leg tonight, but much more important, break a leg Friday night.

I suspect the loneliness may be a function of being both writer and director as opposed to a waiver theater matter.  But obviously, your having the dual capacity is what's best for this show.  Was your producer there, though?  Any feedback from that end?  Or will that come tonight?

Sunday was a blur....

We had to be at church by 8 am as the Vixter was serving at a pancake breakfast fundraiser

I had the pancakes and then attended the 9 am service, then taught at the 10 45 and then we were back home by 12 30 to get Vixdad and head to our friends' house for the day.

They have two toddlers... a girl who will be 3 in February and a boy who was 2 in November... the Vixter had a ball playing with them.

There was another couple there and we spent the afternoon playing Cranium and UNO.  then a lovely dinner of orange chicken and the we had to race home to get the Vixter to her Youth Group.

That ended at 9. and by time we got home it was 9:30 and there was Sunday gone!

My favorite album covers were all Columbia cast albums.

DR Elmore said one of them: CAMELOT. Those color pictures were SO classy and stately. And my favorite thing was inside that half page blue flap with the song lineup on it. Never saw anything before or since that I thought was as majestic. I've mentioned this before but I'll say again that this is my favorite cast album of all time in terms of contents, packaging, performance, etc.

Columbia's two foil-enriched covers for ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY and A CHORUS LINE were also breathtaking in their beauty and uniqueness.

Dear DR Jane: Alex is underweight for his size.  He certainly didn't get any sweets from myself; as near as I can tell, it was Mommy who kept treating him.

Mommy is a walking/talkingscreaming disaster area.

TOD:

I had typed out an extended list before that I dropped when I was not sure of the exact nature of TOD--are we just talking album covers or album packaging as well.  In any case:

Camelot OCR
On The Twentieth Century OCR
A Little Night Music OCR--the first cast recording I came across that had a lyric booklet.
Follies OCR--One good decision Capitol made with the cover art was using a close up of the chorine's head instead of replicating the entire poster with the cast and creative credits.  It's a very nice detail of David Byrd's work.
Purlie OCR--Joyous artwork and the background is my favorite shade of green.
The Beatles:  White Album and Sgt Pepper
The Warner Bros Busby Burkley Album with the pop-up inside the cover.
The Naked Carmen--One was supposed to cut up the album cover to make a psychedelic music and light instrument.  I wonder how many did...
That's Entertainment OST--A variation of the Sgt Pepper's cover.  This would never read on a CD cover.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES spoiler - - - - - -

Well, that was the most graphic interaction of two gay men I've ever seen on a network TV program. Not that it was anything but PG-rated, of course, but at least with this show, there was none of the slowly closing door (a la DYNASTY with Luke and Steven) or two guys in bed together but far enough apart to fit in another person (thirtysomething). Two kissing scenes and one in bed together. Amazing how when the ratings are high, the censors leave a show basically alone.

DanTheMan, I wanted to also let you know that I watched the DVD this weekened that you kindly sent. I only watched part of THE HARD NUT, and will save the entire viewing for next Christmas season...but it looks like fun! I may watch it with little Taylor since she loves THE NUTCRACKER!

But what I really loved, loved, loved (that is three loveds) are the vintage 1960s puppet versions of NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS and THE BIRTH OF CHRIST. How cool! I can remember when I was a wee tike, specials liek that would show on local stations during various holidays or they would show them in school...and having a fascination with puppetry as a kid, those programs always caught my attention. So thank you for including those on the DVD!!

If I remember correctly (IIRC in Internet lingo), the album, not the CD (pictured above), features just the head and I think (I'm at work now and can't check) that the head on the album is facing the other direction.  Does anyone have access to their vinyl album cover?  I couldn't find a picture through Google.

I'm up, I'm up.  Had a good night's sleep, and it's quite a lovely day here in the City of Studio.

The producer of the play is very young, and more of a "line" producer.  She tends to say things like "that sucks", so I pay little attention to that sort of comment.  Last night, after the first act, she came up to me and said a general comment about a sequence, and I told her that I disagreed and wasn't changing anything about it because it's dangerous, and I gave her the reasons, including the fact that I'd just spent forty-five minutes making sure it worked.  She walked away in a huff.

Later, Tammy ascertained that she wasn't talking about the entire sequence, but one little part of it - had she mentioned that one little part at any time, I could have told her that that little part of it was indeed screwy last night because the actors had a problem to deal with and weren't even doing it.  Then she tried the old one that she'd BEEN specific about it and that she felt I just didn't take her seriously.   I told her, no, she hadn't, and that had she, I would have told her what was what.

I thank you for your industriousness.  :D

I have hopes that someone will offer a "personal recommendation".  Recipes don't always come with the "yummy factor" that goes with someone's personal recommendation.

Chard is a leafy green veggie, with either red or white stalks, but I can appreciate the confusion with cheese.  I see it in the produce section of my market all the time...but haven't a clue what to do with it if I buy it.  I believe it goes very well with melted gruyere.

We were in Dublin. Ireland. Who would have thought we would see a little slice of Italy just two blocks from our apartment. Note the name of the take away fish and chips shop. It made Anthony (if you don't know his last name you will now) laugh out loud.

Here's a wonderful moment from "Lestat"...Allison Fischer's "Claudia" rants at Hugh Panaro's "Lestat" because she's tired of dolls and toys...and being treated like a child.  She's been a vampire for more than 30 years.   "I WANT MORE", she sings!

Last night was the first "official" opening of "Lestat" at San Francisco' Curran Theater.

Thus far, however, I've seen no review in the Chronicle...nor do I get any hits via Google.

That reminds me, you never answered my question re whether the play is age appropriate for  a 12 going on 13.... I know the books are not,  but then I would never let the Vixter read the book  Wicked either

There is no nudity or profanity in the play.  It's an adult subject, of course, but if your vixter is used to mature (but not racy/sexual) subject matter, then it should be fine.

And congratulations to "Phantom of the Opera" which, with today's performance, shatters the all-time longest running Broadway play record, passing "Cats."

What has the theatrical world come to????

Favorite album covers:

I loved almost all the 60s Verve jazz covers - all modern art, and/or wonderful photos.  One of my faves, Astrud Gilberto's Windy, is graced with the beautiful wind-blown painting of Miss Gilberto, a painting I happily own.

All the Beatles' covers were interesting.  I loved McGoo in Hi-Fi, too, when I was a wee sprig of a twig of a tad of a lad of a youth.  I love any album cover with rain.

I don't know very much about chard.  I've never cooked with it, myself.

I would be interested, however, if it comes in a "dimpled" variety.

Since it seems to be a slow news day here I will post another picture from Dublin.

We were in Dublin. Ireland. Who would have thought we would see a little slice of Italy just two blocks from our apartment. Note the name of the take away fish and chips shop. It made Anthony (if you don't know his last name you will now) laugh out loud.

An authentic taste of Ireland!   ;D

Keep those pictures coming!

Have you heard anything more about etting a copy of  the full hour show from Beverly?

No, Deb, I haven't heard anything about getting a copy of the whole show. I have been catching up on old posts and I know that question was asked after the initial airing. I've e-mailed twice but I'm reluctant to ask again for fear of being a pest. If I don't hear anything by the next time I record reviews I'll ask Bridget. I hope to hear something by this Wednesday when the show airs again since both Beverley and Bridget (the producer) will be in the studio.

Good Afternoon!

Just popping in to say HI right now...  I tried to log in earlier today, but couldn't get connected.

Still down in Richmond, and it's a simply beautiful day here.  Unseasonably warm, but in a very good, welcome way - high of 66!  I've been running errands, and did a nice inventory and semi-purge of some of the stuff in my storage unit...  Ah, progress.

Just checking my e-mail right now before I hit the next couple of things on my To-Do List...

Hope everyone is well, and I shall catch up later tonight.

Laters...

Does anyone here have any to-die-for recipe for Swiss Chard?

I'm curious about chard, never having had it any other way than steamed.

Ron, yes!!  DS Betsy makes the most incredible chard dish with some kind of seared almond butter and toasted almonds.  When she gets home, I'll post it.  It's unbelievably tasty.

JRand, another pair of skinny jeans-good going.  I like the Annette cover. :)

Elmore, I’m glad you are somewhat recovered, continued feel good vibes.

Vixmom thanks for the update on Hisaka.

SWW our friend’s son was always thin, better that than overweight.  Good luck at the dentist.  If Alex has had fluoride treatments and the molars had a protective coating put on, his teeth might be okay.

Ron if you had blood drawn today does that mean all the results will be back to your doctor by tomorrow?  If so that is nice and quick.

Actually, Ron, now that I think about the correct terminology and ingredients for the chard dish, I believe it's a seared brown butter (is there such a thing?) and walnuts, not almonds.  But Betsy will know.

They said it would be ready.  I went last week on Tuesday, but my doctor had failed to enter his requirements in their computer and he was on vacation until this morning.

I thought I'd need to reschedule tomorrow's appointment but they said to come in today...that it takes only an hour or so to run the tests.

My thinking is...they send most blood out to a lab, but can conduct in-clinic testing when they have to.

When I got in from the late lunch (we also stopped at the post office so we could get new stamps), I put in MAN OF LA MANCHA.

This DVD has been sitting on my shelf for probably two years without being played, so it was exciting to see it looking so good. Previous video transfers were muddy and very dull. Some of that is still present, but the enhanced for widescreen TV picture is the best I've ever seen the movie look. The repurposed Dolby 5.1 sound is still kind of hollow; it was never a boomed, deliriously expansive soundtrack, and it isn't now, but the sound is clean if a bit thin.

The movie, of course, is a mess, but as this is probably the only film version we'll ever get, it's better than nothing. I only got about an hour in before I had to turn it off to come upstairs to log onto the internet.

1.  No.  This is to determine whether a new medication I was given for something unrelated has been effective or not.

2.  I will be bringing up the incident from last week, however.  One never knows whether the medication might have a side effect that could have led to the incident of last week.

3.  I cleaned the loose plaster off the ceiling where it was separating.  I found some mold.  This was in an area about 2 inches by 4 inches.   I treated it with Lysol for Mold & Mildew and it's clean now.  I will, of course, monitor it from now on.  I will bring this problem up to the HOA in our next meeting for recommendations from them on how they've handled past cases.  There was another area in my bedroom ceiling where the textured plaster had formed bubbles.  I removed that, too, but the sheetrock underneath was clean.

4.  Thanks for asking.

Most network shows are airing new episodes tonight to counteract the ABC premieres of EMILY'S REASONS WHY NOT, JAKE IN PROGRESS, and THE BACHELOR. I will probably watch EMILY, but I'll stick to HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, OUT OF PRACTICE, MEDIUM, and CSI: MIAMI for the rest of the evening.

Fox is rerunning two HOUSE episodes since '24' doesn't begin until next Sunday, and then it returns to its usual Monday night slot after its four hour premiere spread over Sunday and Monday.

I must look to see tonight

I'm glad you guys enjoyed The Hard Nut--it's become a Christmas favorite of mine.

During the early sixties, my sister and I would always look for and watch The Spirit of Christmas, which was produced by The Telephone Company.  It was shown on a local channel and there was never much hype about when it was broadcast, so we had to be vigilant every year to catch it.  It literally disappeared for over thirty years before our local PBS outlet, WHYY, found a copy and began presenting it in the 90s.  I've been watching it again every year (not as hard to miss nowadays, as they show it incessantly during Christmas.)

DR Vixmom,  the actual show doesn't start until about three minutes in.

That sounds so covert. :)  I had a similar assignment and went to a CMA (crystal meth anoymous) meeting.  I made sure that I attended an open meeting so it was open to anyone at all with an interest of any kind.  It was a huge meeting with over a hundred people so I didn't have to share anything or explain myself.  Afterward, a few men came over to welcome me and I told them I was a social work student. They were most gracious.

Channeling surfing and caught the Act One Finale sequence and Act two of Phantom of the Opera. I tried to like as I haven't seen it in 18 years but it just didn't do anything for me. It was nicely designed and photographed and surprisingly Joel Shumacher (sp?) did a nice job of directing but the viewing left me flat and what was the point of the new song over the end titles? Was it there just to get an oscar nomination? (Which it did and lost)

MattH, I find your comment about InJustice interesting, that it could become boring if none of the people aren't innocent.  It seems like the premise of most of the cop/prosecutor shows is that someone is always guilty and they always find the guy who did it. I'm not being judgmental, just curious if that gets boring too?

I guess you could always see it as the show starts with a crime that wasn't really solved and they are investigating years later to see who really did it.

I can't say that I loved the show, I am, however a little defensive about the issue. It's scary how many innocent people are in jail. Really innocent people.  after 20 years in the criminal justice system, I really believe that. Just got back from the PHANTOM OF THE OPERA record-breaking performance.  This was truly a case of the old line about me being practically the only one in the audience that I never heard of. :)   For anyone who regrets not going, though, it was really a regular performance of the show, and everything that followed the show was being filmed by many cameras, so I'd bet it will be available for viewing at some point on DVD or something or other.  But it was exciting, and I had an aisle seat, so i was very very happy.

From the SF Chronicle on LESTAT Review. It should be published on the 10th

"Review of a vampire: Anne Rice fans, relax. We're not ignoring "Lestat," the Elton John and Bernie Taupin musical take on Anne Rice's "The Vampire Chronicles." The reason there hasn't been a review of the show in these pages is because it hasn't opened yet -- even though it's been playing at the Curran Theatre since mid-December.

The apparent paradox has led some readers to call or e-mail asking why the show hasn't been reviewed. The answer is because it's in previews, that grace period during which producers get to try out a new production with live audiences, and make small or major changes before the critics pass judgment. What's confusing some readers is the unusually long three-week preview period and the fact that the Best of Broadway's ads haven't noted the difference between preview and regular performances, as would be standard practice in New York.

It's one of the unwritten laws of the theater-journalism interface: Critics stay away until the show officially opens (or starts charging full ticket prices, which is usually the same thing). Subscribers to most local companies know the drill because the preview period is the same for every show -- from a day to a week, depending on the company -- and previews cost significantly less (at some small companies, they're free).

Best of Broadway doesn't offer much of a preview discount ($5 off per seat for "Lestat"), and, because so many of its shows are national tours, rarely has more than one or two previews. But its increasing number of Broadway-bound world premieres -- "Wicked," "Lennon," "The Mambo Kings," "Lestat" -- need longer preview periods (similar to Broadway practice). "Lestat" opens Sunday. The review should run two days later, Jan. 10. The show begins previews on Broadway on March 11. "

Chard With Pasta, Walnuts and Brown Butter a la Betsy

1/3 cup of brown butter (see below for how to make brown butter)
1 bunch of chard (about 8 cups packed leaves)
1 T. olive oil
1/2 medium sized red onion, chopped (about 1 cup)
salt and pepper to taste
2 garlic gloves finely chopped
1/2 lb. fresh fettucini
1/3 cup toasted walnut pieces

Make brown butter* (to follow) and keep it warm over very low heat.  Set a large pot of water on the stove to boil.  Trim the stems from the chard and slice across the leaves to make 2 inch wide ribbons.  Heat the oil in a large sautee pan, add the onion, 1/4 tsp. salt and a few pinches of pepper.  Sautee over medium heat for about 5 mins., until the onion softens and begins to release its juices.  Add garlic, chard and a 1/4 tsp. of salt.  Sautee for 4-5 mins. until the chard is just barely tender, then reduce the heat to low.  When the water boils, add the fettucini and some salt, timing it to finish cooking with the chard.  Drain the pasta, add it to the onions and the chard, along with the walnuts and brown butter.  Toss together and serve with freshly grated parmesan.

That's sort of like Perry Mason always defending an innocent client, and finding who was really guilty while said guilty party is on the stand.  It's called "formula."  Compare it with the sit-coms that always had a warm/fuzzy moment and a group hug towards the end - hey, we could combine the two ideas, and Perry could give the truly guilty guy a group hug!

That show is called Cold Case.  Fairly good, and very much in a formula, right to the use of period music and the ending where the guilty party is led away in front of the people he/she wronged, as both their former and present selves.

Brown Butter (how unseemly  ;D)

Melt 1 stick of unsalted butter in a small saucepan over low heat.  As the butter gently simmers, the butter fat and milk solids will separate from each other.  The solids will settle to the bottom of the pan, coloring the butter as it cooks.  When it turns an amber color (about 8 - 10 mins.), remove from the heat.  Line a fine mesh strainer with a paper towel and pour the butter through it, straining out the solids.  The butter can be used immediately, or cooled and refrigerated in a sealed container.

I watched the premiere of EMILY'S REASONS WHY NOT. It was an OK start and a nice premise for a half hour comedy: pretty girl (Heather Graham) dates a guy until she can find five things about him that are deal breakers, and then she breaks up with him. Tonight's show had some good lines and I smiled several times. There is a pushy, bitchy co-worker character I took an instant dislike to. And Emily's gay friend is pretty stereotypical, too.

But I'll continue watching for now.

OUT OF PRACTICE once again took a fairly simple premise (there's a pregnancy test in someone's weekend luggage but whose luggage and which man might be the potential father) and mined some hysterical lines out of a lack of knowledge to those two questions. I'm going to miss this show when it goes on hiatus to be replaced by Jenna Elfman's new sitcom.

I'm glad to see that a batch of Betsy's brown butter (try saying that three times quickly) uses unsalted butter.  I don't even keep any salted butter in the house.  Salt may be a good preservative, but we never have a pound of butter in the house long enough for that preservation to be needed.

And the thought of a batch of Betsy's brown margarine just gives me the willies.  To the max.  To be frank.

I watched a drawn out, but interesting show on the Game Show Channel tonight about the guy who broke the bank on Press Your Luck by figuring out the pattern of the "random" board. He was a schemer, but you have to give him full credit for figuring the system out, getting on the show, then actually making it happen under pressure.

In a tastless closing bit, we are told he died of throat cancer, and narrator (and former Press Your Luck host) Peter Tomarken says, "He met the final whammy..." while we are shown the guy's headstone!

I watched "Emily's Reasons Why Not," more or less. And it more or less wasn't very good. Not the worst thing I've ever seen, but episode one, and her "reasons why not" involved her thinking the guy might be gay, (shocking!). Plus, I'm not a huge fan of shows with cloying narration. And a lot of fantasy cutaways to hammer home every joke in literal fashion.

PRESS YOUR LUCK? I don't even recall that show. But I do have a strange fascination with finding out whatever became of various and sundried contestants that I see on vintage game shows.

Whenever I watch THE NAMES THE SAME or TO TELL THE TRUTH I do a search on the internet trying to locate the contestants...sometimes I find them...and I always have an urge to call and say "I just saw you on some game show from 50 years ago....and do you still have those prizes that you won on BEAT THE CLOCK?"

As for Lestat reviews... As DR Cillaliz posted and excerpted, the reviews will be coming out sometime this week.  Since Sunday was the official opening night in San Fran, reviews probably won't "hit" until Tuesday since the Monday papers were probably "in bed" by the time the curtain went down at the Curran.  *The DC theatres do that a lot - Sunday night opening nights, that is - this way everyone can have a true day off on Monday, and not have to "worry" about anything until Tuesday or later in the week.

There's also been a sort of built-in "delay" with out-of-town tryout reviews of most shows lately, more or less, as a professional courtesy.  And sometimes just out of the fact that the reviewers came later in the run.  There was a show here in DC - I can't recall which one right now - that had a tryout here before heading up to NYC, but the DC reviews didn't start appearing until the last week of the run here.  I also sense that sometimes the local guys know that, in the long run, their reviews won't really carry that much pull once the show opens in New York.  -Unless they happen to send a critic to New York too - like the Post does from time to time.

Just a couple of random thoughts...

We shall see if the gods of the theatre and the press are smiling on the Curran right now...

*Of course, all I really care about is still having a job in a month in NYC, so...

;)

BK - I believe your "isolation" with this production is simply a matter of how the production came together.  From what I gather, you more or less had to find "new" people to get this production up on it's feet.  You had a lot of meetings.  -From what you've posted, it seems like the only familiar people to you this time round are Dale, your stage manager, and Tammy.  And it seems that Tammy's involvement this time round is truly more "on stage" instead of "behind the scenes" (like she was doing with What If?)

And as DR JMK (I think) mentioned, being the writer and the director has a lot to do with that do.  The big collaborative relationship between a writer and a director is, well, between you, yourself and you.  Actors are actors, and techies are techies.  -And I also believe that since all of you seem to have other "day jobs", that's also part of the whole "all by myself" feeling.  -Unlike in a regional theatre production - like the current production of Damn Yankees I'm a part of - where basically everyone involved with the production is only there for the production.  -No "distractions".  And, you, yourself, have mentioned many times that you want the show to go the way you want it to go.  You've more or less been your second set of eyes... and even the third from what I gather.  -Your producer sounds more like an observer than someone who truly has a vested interest in the production.  And sort of a newcomer to things theatrical in nature.

*And keep in mind that most of the team for The Drowsy Chaperone has been with the project for a long time.  That show has been in development for a couple of years - long before they got the go ahead for the production at the Ahmanson.  Readings, workshops, more readings, more workshops.  And most of that cast and crew were also in from NYC - or other cities - and were only in town for the show.

If anything, be thankful that you, too, have had other things going on in your schedule to keep you busy and productive and creative.  Something has to fill those hours before starting rehearsal in the evening.  ;)

Hmmm.... beurre noisette... It's also very good on pumpkin ravioli... with a little sage added it to it.

:)

*And making shortbread cookies with browned butter...  Amazing!  Such depth of flavor.  And, actually, I've tried a standard sugar cookie recipe using browned butter instead of "regular" butter... Quite a sophisticated cookie... Especially when given a final dusting with turbinado sugar.

OH!!  And Browned Butter Madeleines... Très délicieux!

*I shall have to track down the recipe for those... Very simple, and oh sooooo yummy.

RE: In Justice

My dad also commented to me that he hoped that they wouldn't continue with the same formula all the time.  He also gets annoyed when the woman on Close to home always wins.

Personally for In Justice I think that they only take cases where they are quite certain that the person in jail is unjustly accused.  So I don't mind if the person is always innocent. But will they always get them out?  That part could change.

It makes me sick to think that there are innocent people in jail.

I watched the first half of MEDIUM but then the phone rang. So I recorded the rest.

I will say that this episode and the last one seem very different than the ones before.  Why is Alison getting in so much trouble!

DR Jose, Hope everything is ok

Thanks, DR Cillaliz - I'm OK.  However, some of my close friends and others... Well...

It started off this morning with an e-mail from my friend, Andy.  He had to put his dog, Kamau, down this morning.  Kamau had been having some health issues over the past year or so, but when they took him to the vet emergency room this morning, they realized that he was having a problem with his spleen which was causing internal bleeding.  So...  And I truly know that Andy considers his dogs as family...

Then I got another e-mail today about the passing of a colleague.  Another pianist here in DC.  He died of pneumonia early this afternoon.  I hadn't seen Michael in a while, but we've crossed paths many a time, and shared pit space on a few shows.

And then...

*The following is quite depressing... please skip if you are not "in the mood".  I will understand.  I just need to clear my head...

While walking through Carytown in Richmond earlier this afternoon, I came upon a makeshift memorial in front of one of my favorite stores...

A family in Richmond - a husband, wife and their two daughters - were brutally murdered on New Year's Day in their own house.  I had read the news that day online, and it truly sickened me.  The husband was a local musician in Richmond, and the wife opened and ran "World of Mirth" in Carytown -  a truly wonderful store that carried all sorts of items.  A true one-of-a-kind find.

...And a few days later, another family, a father and daughter were found murdered in their home in another part of Richmond...

And, yesterday, police in Pennsylvania arrested two men - who happen to be from nearby Arlington, VA -  in conjunction with both sets of murders... As well as possibly some other ones in Pennsylvania, and another one in Richmond of a woman who may have been part of the "team" on the home invasion and murder of the Harvey family - Bryan, Kathryn, Stella (age 9) and Ruby (age 4).

So, as I approached "World of Mirth" I noticed bouquets of flowers on the sidewalk.  Teddy bears and other stuffed animals.  And there were pictures and a video of the family set up in the front window.  A black drape was on the front door, while a "Ruby Red" ribbon was attached to the front of the glass.  And on the windows to the left of the front door were big "posters" where people had written down their condolences, wishes and prayers for the Harvey family and for the "World of Mirth" family.

I just stood there for a while taking it all in.  I started to read some of the notes, but I knew that if I got too into it, I would not be able to function after a while.  Instead, I grabbed one of the Sharpies that were placed in a bag...  "Peace.  Love.  Comfort."

A woman next to me... "How could you not stop and write something."

A postman making his rounds... "So disgusting.  So sad.  Why?"

Later on, while still walking up and down Carytown, I noticed a flyer posted at one of the counters.  A fund had been started, The Harvey Fund.  It had just gotten started last Wednesday, and by the end of that day, they had collected about $15,000 from various businesses and organizations and individuals.  The money would be used to help defray funeral costs, as well help the employees of "World of Mirth" who are now in the process of closing up the store.  And "Ruby Red" ribbons - in honor of their youngest daughter who was a fixture at the store - were being "sold" by various merchants.

By this time, I had settled in for a bite to eat, and, by chance, my friend, Matt, was walking by.  I hadn't seen him since he came to NYC back in July.  His timing could not have been more perfect.  I wasn't depressed, exactly, but it was nice to see a familiar face.

...And in the larger scheme of things, today was another part of my "Goodbye to Richmond"... A place I basically spent almost 20 years in!  It really had become home to me.

-I had noticed that "Grower's Exchange" had closed.  They opened when I started school at VCU... 20 years ago.

"The Little Yogurt Shop"... Closed.

"The New York Deli"... Closed.  *Currently being remodeled and revamped by new owners.

"Carytown Books" - Closed.

"Stella's"... Closed.

However, on the bright side, while going through my storage unit, I realized that I didn't really have that much stuff left down there.  And I also realized that almost all of the clothes I had in storage could basically be given away or thrown out by now.  -If I haven't need them since last March... Well... And some of them are just too big now too!  :)  -I brought back all the clothes with me - I'll wash them, then sort them, and get some bags ready for Goodwill.

And I guess I have to be thankful that the weather today was absolutely glorious.  After I had finished my first set of errands, I just spent some time sitting with my friend, Mike, on his front porch, just watching the traffic and the people going by.  Very peaceful.  And the nice weather also took some of the "depression" away from the memorial at World of Mirth.  It truly seemed more like a celebration of their lives, and a wonderful sign of the outpouring of support from the community.  Good over Evil.

The rain continues in the Northwest... and continues...

22 days in a row now that we've had rain in the Seattle/Tacoma area.  They say we've got a 50/50 shot at breaking the all-time record of 33 days.

Well... I really am fine.  It's all good.  Again, just such a weird news day...

I'm guessing the curtain has already come down on the first preview of Deceit...  And I hope BK has a good report from the first night... but I shall have to read about it in the morning... or afternoon...

I have a Noon matinee tomorrow/today... Just ten and a half hours from now... And I have to be at the theatre in nine and a half hours... So...

Goodnight.

Well, we've survived our first preview and our first audience with a whopping fourteen people.  The rest of the previews should have more people in attendance - Mondays are just slow here in LA.  Still, it went reasonably well, and I'll have more in the notes, which I must now write.
