Well, you've read the notes, the notes were alive, but alive, and now it is time for you to post until the twitchy and bitchy and MOOnic cows come home.

As promised, here's the new Kritzerland release for your early mental delectation.  You know the deal - pay directly to paypal using our paypal address, which is kritzerland at adelphia dot net.  It's 19.98 plus 3.75 for shipping.  This one won't be around long.

“WE ARE NOT LITTLE MEN”

Kritzerland is very proud to present a new limited edition CD soundtrack release:

THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING
Music Composed and Conducted by Maurice Jarre

John Huston’s 1975 film of Rudyard Kipling’s The Man Who Would Be King was a project he’d been longing to do for twenty years.  And watching the film you can see why – it’s a brilliant, ripping adventure yarn about larger-than-life men doing larger-than-life things.  It’s one of those films where everything just came together in perfect symmetry.  It was a project Huston was born to direct, he had two extraordinary stars in Sean Connery and Michael Caine, a great cameraman in Oswald Morris, perfect costume design by the legendary Edith Head, and the brilliant production design of the great Alexander Trauner.  And certainly right up there with all those extraordinary artists was the composer Maurice Jarre, who provided the film with a wonderful score, one of his best, despite the score’s brevity.

Maurice Jarre and Huston had already done The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean and The Mackintosh Man together.  Jarre had, by that time, become legendary for his Academy Award-winning scores for two David Lean masterpieces, Lawrence Of Arabia and Dr. Zhivago as well as his classic scores for The Collector, Eyes Without A Face, Sundays and Cybele, Ryan’s Daughter and A Passage To India (also for David Lean), Grand Prix, The Professionals, Resurrection, Shogun, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Fatal Attraction, Dead Poet’s Society, Witness, and Ghost, among many others.  In The Man Who Would Be King Jarre delivered exactly the score Huston wanted – understated yet filled with majesty and wonderful orchestral textures.  The score is played by the National Philharmonic, along with several of the then-greatest Indian musicians.  It is robust, exotic, moving and one of Jarre’s finest achievements in a career filled with fine achievements.

The Man Who Would Be King was originally released on a Capitol LP.  Its first CD release was on Bay Cites back in the early 1990s.  That release went out of print in 1993 and immediately became a pricey collector’s item.  Since Kritzerland had its genesis in Bay Cities, it is particularly gratifying to be able to bring back The Man Who Would Be King to CD on Kritzerland.    The CD has been completely and lovingly remastered, fixing several problems inherent in the original release.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

CD will ship by the second week of April – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Popping in early to make a comment about the discussion of male body hair last night.

I agree completely (have said so here several times).

MOST disturbing to me is the elimination of all body hair, not just on the chest but on the arms and legs, too, which looks completely and totally unnatural.

I mean, I have next to no hair on my chest (much to my regret since I've always found it alluring), but my arms and legs have a natural amount of hair, and I can't imagine any reason why I'd ever find it necessary to shave them.

OK, I'll be back later to read today's notes and comment on the usual Friday activities. I woke up an hour and a half early this morning, could not go back to sleep, and just got up to start the day. Now, it's not even 7:30, and I have an entire morning on my hands.

Wooooooooooohooooooooooooooo.....I have ordered the new Kritzerland release!  I love the movie - and having Michael and Sean together in an adventure film was so great!!!

THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING!  And I think Michael Caine met his wife Shakira while filming this movie, if I remember correctly.

My last official act before leaving for my stress test was to order the CD.

At one time, Maurice Jarre was a publicity client.

I love Jarre's score for GRAND PRIX.....bought the gatefold album for fifty cents way last century.....

I also bought the PRIVILEGE soundtrack....it was only a quarter....mint still sealed.  I like the music more than I like the movie, but it is an interesting and prescient piece of work....I like the lead guy and some of the dolly birds around him....and THE MUSIC!

Good morning!

As I mentioned, I've been up quite a long time and am not happy about it. Since I don't walk on Fridays, it's my one morning to sleep as late as I want, and what happens? I get out of bed at 5:30 completely awake knowing there will be no more sleep until tonight.

For four days this week, our newspaper's online weather page listed the weather as sunny with the low as 51 and the high of 71 with the current temperature being 49.  Yes, apparently it has been 49 degrees 24 hours a day for the last week.  It felt warmer than that to me in the afternoons.   Was it the warm sun, or was I having hot flashes?   :-[ :P ::) :D

Well as for last night's PWOJECT WUNWAY.....not a team challenge which I don't like at all....but an unusual materials challenge.

Some of them turned out surprisingly well, and then winner was quite good.  However when it got down to the bottom two, I would have sent the other contestant home.....although I guess track record is also a factor for the judges.  One of the guest judges was an idiot.

Having just about completed my first week of my new long commute via two trains to Conshohocken, I've also just about finished reading a book that's often mentioned here. Meredith Wilson's BUT HE DOESN'T KNOW THE TERRITORY.  I have enjoyed it, though it does tend to read like one of those books from the 50's and 60's that were meant to do no more than lightly amuse--it's not a theatre student's book.

Didn't Jarre also win an Oscar for A PASSAGE TO INDIA?  I could have sworn he did.

I often like his music very much while at the same time finding it completely inappropriate to whatever film it's in.  I must say that, unlike JR, I dislike GRAND PRIX pretty intensely.  Jarre's son of course became one of the progenitors of ambient New Age music.

Like MattH, I too got up early today. I'm expecting an important delivery from UPS and was told it was coming today. However, no call came from UPS and the vendor did not send the tracking number. I suspect I woke up early with the delivery on my mind. I phoned the vendor, only to learn that the delivery is now scheduled for next Wednesday. Sigh. How very nice.  You just catapulted me back to 1957, actually, when Welcome Wagon came to our door at 113 Dixie Avenue, Greenville SC.  I was 9 years old and thought it was wonderful that someone would put all this information and samples and coupons together for new people.

Of course, at that time I had no idea this visit was the first and last time I'd ever see these welcoming "neighbors".  Oh, well...my folks both worked -- a latchkey kid was I from ages 9 through 18.

Still...."Welcome Wagon".  What a wonderful revivalist idea.

One of them is a feature film called Fade to White.  It's a sci-fi film told in three separate stories, each in the future, and in three different time frames.  We're mostly through the editing process now, and our composer is now beginning work on the underscoring.  We then have a bunch of work on color correction and other post-editing details.

Another project I'm working on is I'm producing the MAC Awards show here in NY this May.  This will be the 24th Annual Mac Awards Show, and I'm very excited to be producing it this year.  But it's been a lot of work!!  But I'm not complaining!!

Anyway, it will be held at B.B. King Blues Club on May 4th.  We'll be presenting awards in about a dozen categories, as well as Lifetime Achievement and special Board of Director chosen honorees.

Anyway, greetings from the Founders' Cafe at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary!  Richard's seminar isn't scheduled to end for an hour and three-quarters, but they had a break at 3pm and I was sort of expecting him to bail.  I was tired of shopping and just headed out here and even found some Graeter's toffee chip ice cream to go with my bottle of water.

Thanks for all the stress test vibes.

Those tests are miserable.

First, they inject you with a radioactive fluid, then you have to lay perfectly still, arms raised above your head, for 17 minutes while they takes a picture of your heart.

Next, I had an ECO test, which wasn't bad.

Then, they put me on the tread mill, and after I got off, I thought I WAS having a heart attack.  I had to lay down for 10 minutes.

Finally, they had me lay still, arms raised, for another picture, this one taking only 12 minutes.

In and out the door was 4 hours and 15 minutes.

I won't get the results until next week.

Not a fun morning.

So I've seen some good shows recently.

Amongst my favorites -- The Orphan's Home Cycle.
This is a series of nine full length plays written by Horton Foote.
Each play has been condensed to one hour in length, and is being presented in three groups of three, so there are three separate evenings that each contain three one-act condensed plays.

I saw them in semi-marathon version.  A matinee, an evening the same day, and then the matinee the next day.
The sum is really quite exquisite.  It made me wonder what the full length version of the plays were like.   Several of them had been full length feature films, so I plan to watch them -- they are now in my netflix queue.

Before I left on my Friday errands, I did manage to watch PROJECT RUNWAY.

The winner I thoroughly agreed with (though I wouldn't have put either 2nd or 3rd place in the top three). I liked someone else's design who was in the "safe" group.

I certainly would have reversed the last two finishers. On the runway, the loser's design looked kind of striking. I could understand the criticism of "costumy" but I still liked the way it looked and moved. The other one was TACKY, and we knew the truth about its creation: he didn't have enough material and this was a last resort. Ugh!

When I got in, I had time to watch one of the LAW & ORDER episodes from Monday. My gosh, how grim and grisly was that! Loved how it all worked out, and Jeremy Sisto gave a marvelous performance on the witness stand.

And loved seeing Scott Evans playing someone other than Officer Fish. There was nothing about him at all like Oliver in this brief performance.

Then I spent much of the rest of the afternoon with THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG. It is a real Disney musical, and the animation is really gorgeous (in Blu-ray, it's spectacular). The story is involving, and there are lovable creatures and evil villains as in all the Disney classics.

The difference between this and, say, THE LITTLE MERMAID (directed by the same guys) is in the choice of composer. Randy Newman can write entertaining and enjoyable music, and he's captured the New Orleans jazz sound just fine. But he just doesn't have the compositional variety of an Alan Menken to turn out a multi-song score in which the songs don't sound like one another. I liked the songs, but each one sounded like the last in many cases. And when a song plays over the closing credits, you can tell that Randy Newman had NOTHING to do with it at all because it sounds so very different from the rest of the songs.

Then I watched all of the bonus material. There's only one feature that's longer than 20 minutes. Most of the rest are little EPK snippets of 2-3 minutes in length, touching briefly on some aspect of the movie. Fine, but lacking depth.

There is a commentary, but I was disappointed it wasn't one of those commentaries with picture-in-picture inserts coming in and out illustrating the comments of the directors and producer. You can watch the movie with the storyboards and rough animation in an upper left hand window, but that's not the same thing.

Yes...ugh.  Ill-conceived, ill-considered and, worst of all, badly done.

But then, I think they all probably knew that he had to alter his approach as the challenge went on.  IIRC, Nina wasn't altogether put off by it.

Still....perhaps they both should have gone home.  It would have made more sense than sending off the one they did.

And it felt like today was the first day of spring.  Maybe not warm for some. But a lot of the snow has melted. And it was like 44F. It really felt warm!

Last night we watched "Inglourious Basterds".  We thought the opening scene was perfection.  In contrast we were shaking our heads at the end of the film.

I have that one reserved at the library. I am #2 so i should get it this week (3 days each).

I am curious about this movie. Is it more for kids or is it geared towards adults too?  My sister was going to take my niece to see it at the theatre but heard there were some scary parts for kids. So she is gonna buy it for her instead.

I have not seen it. But my niece does have the book. I can't say i'm crazy about the story. And i'm gathering they are frogs for more than half of it?

DR MBarnum re: SURVIVOR i'm curious if you were happy with the outcome?

I thought it was interesting that one person could have voted two ways. And interesting what that person decided.  Knowing you, i sort of bet you are happy with the outcome.  It was definitely interesting.

Did MR BK mention the title of said play he is attending this evening?

No, DR ELMORE - it is NOT an opera....just a colorful Russian fairy tale......

I'm home from my trip to Des Moines.  It was a very long day, but also very well worth it.  I learned a few things I needed for a couple new cases I have and I enjoyed the time with other immigration lawyers.  I'm looking forward to the next seminar, an all day seminar in Omaha in a couple weeks.

I didn't get home until 8:00 pm so I was gone for about 12 hours.  By the way the cats acted, you'd think I'd been gone 12 days, lol. It's nice to be missed, but really it was only a couple hours longer than a lot of other days

Today's auditions went rather well for me - and consequently for the auditionees. ;)

But I did feel quite alert and extra-musical this morning. A big part of that was being more familiar with the acoustic of the room (which is very live). I could tell just how I needed to adjust my touch and volume in order to make the sound from the piano carry better to the stage and out into the room. There were also some very good people and unusual song selections which were fun to play.

I have to say, it's wonderful to be home.   I took the interstate to get there, but I HATE I-80 between Omaha and Des Moines.  There is always a cross wind and there are always tons of trucks that surround my little car at 70+ mph and I don't like it!!!

So I took the long way home, I headed out through the country side on the 2 lane state highways.  It's slower but shorter in distance and to my surprise only took about 15 minutes longer...and I stopped once for gas and once to go through a drive through to get some food.  I can't believe the depth of the snow in the countryside.  Many many places where the road has been cleared by cutting through drifts that are still taller than my car.   There is now a lot of talk about flooding.  It's supposed to rain this weekend.  I hope it doesn't melt too fast or rain too much.

What a horribly frustrating night I've had since I came upstairs. My main computer is on the fritz, so I reviewed THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG on an old laptop, and when I tried to cut and paste the review as I normally do, the word processor went crazy transposing lines and making a total mess of the whole thing. After stuggling with it an hour, I asked an administrator to delete the whole thing, and I'll have to cut and paste to Word which the site seems to handle much more agreeably.

But all that takes time, and I'm just so frustrated now that I don't want to deal with it.

Back to talking about my very fun evening of viewing. I began with the BURN NOTICE season finale. It was a wonderful one with great action and lots of involving character stuff. Garrett Dillahunt always makes a great psycho, and he and Jeffrey Donovan played superbly against one another.

And for the first time since the series started, I really enjoyed Sharon Gless' work this week. FINALLY, Madeline found a backbone and stood her ground with someone other than her children. I loved her give and take with the FBI agent.

I had 75 minutes before the time I wanted to start GHOST WHISPERER, so I pulled SHERLOCK HOLMES IN WASHINGTON off the shelf and watched it. Not one of the great Universal Holmes series, but they're all entertaining and very watchable.

Greetings from our home!  Richard and I left Louisville at the height of Friday rush hour, but still made it home in time to see Sarah Jessica Parker's genealogical quest on "Who Do You Think You Are?"

Our DS Rob is here for the weekend to finalize his enrollment in paramedic training that starts at the end of the month.

I watched that tonight, too.  I found it quite interesting.  Her mother's family has been in this coountry for a very long time.   The Salem stuff was especially interesting to me.

I had to take a stress test about six months ago, but they didn't do the radioactive dye.  They just wired me up and stuck me on a treadmill and upped the incline every 90 seconds or so.  I actually did quite well for my age.  I think I lasted about 18 minutes and was at a very sharp incline when the nurse actually told me they had enough data.  But I was very out of breath by the end of it, I will say that.

Thankfully, I can move on to the next disc tomorrow. It'll likely be YOJIMBO on Blu-ray.
