One of the topics at yesterday's sparkling chat was soup. DR Emily mentioned French onion, made with beer. An important question: Do you add additional stock, or is it all beer? (I've been in a French onion soup mood, and I have a good recipe - does anyone want it? - but hesitate to use a stock made of cow bones.)
Hold on, first things first...
Congratulations, Panni!

(Had to shout, because I think she's left her computer.)

Now, about those cow bones...Part of what makes beef stock what it is, is the natural gelatin that is in the bones themselves.  It adds a richness, what is called "mouth feel," that can't be faked.  If you've really got qualms about using beef stock, then don't.  You can get a lot of flavor from gently caramelizing the onions.  Just don't count on it tasting the same as it would if you were using beef stock.

That said, Alton Brown, on Good Eats, uses canned broth!  In fact, he uses...Heck, better for you to find out for yourself.  His recipe can be found here, and the transcript for the entire show can be found at the Good Eats Fan Page.  (For the transcript, look under "Episodes," then find "A Bowl of Onion."  It's all there.  Including pictures!)

CONGRATS, PANNI! ! !

So, while in a strange mood today, with the re-organizing, I happened upon the video tape of SHOCK TREATMENT, and promptly threw it into the vcr; well, it would make a perfect double feature with THE APPLE. . .

Panni --  That would be wonderful news, if we discussed that type of thing.  But since we don't, I am not going to say a word!

My first day back at school has been sooo stressful (I'm back to work now, being a writing tutor with a lot of downtime).  My schedule is soo filled now, and I had a lot of conflicts I had to sort out so I didn't end up commiting myself to work, school and rehearsals at overlapping times.  I had to scramble around getting scheduling sorted, and doing all kinds of other fun stuff like paying for my new parking permit.  Blah blah blah.

What a great (and expansive topic du jour!)  I don't know where to begin.  I'll go with one song from a show, just for the sake of brevity.

Ragtime--"Back to Before"
Passion--"Loving You"
Hello Again--"Tom"
Parade--"All the Wasted Time"
A New Brain--"Sailing"
Titanic--"No Moon"
A Class Act--"Better"
Urinetown--"Privelege to Pee"
Thoroughly Modern Millie--"Forget About the Boy"
The Producers--"Springtime for Hitler"
The Last 5 Years--"A Summer in Ohio"
The Wild Party (MJlC)--"This is What It Is"
Bounce--"Talent"
Wicked--"Defying Gravity"
Avenue Q--"Schadenfreude"

I'm sure I'm missing some that I will beat myself over the head for later.

Anybody see CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM last night? Stephen Schwartz must've been laughing.

YES!  That was awful...Guy Haines does a much better Corner of the Sky!  ;)

Congrats on your script!

Just wanted to mention that the ever luscious John Burke (from AMC) begins anchoring E! News Daily this week. I stopped watching the show when Steve Kmetko was let go, but I may tune in tonight to see how John does.

It seems some of you know about soap operas.  I don't, but I have a question:

The single most important person in creating the person I am today, my teacher, friend, and mentor John Ingle, was recently let go from his long-running role on, I believe, General Hospital.

Anyone know why?
And was his character killed, or what?

Hmm, Steve Kmetko was let go?  I haven't watched E! News Daily in a while.

Is anyone else annoyed by Jules Asner?  I don't know WHAT Steven Soderbergh sees in the gal.

Is that James (Carnival) Mitchell?

And, DR Michael, for the life of me, how could I have forgotten The Life? If I had to pick, say, three, from that score, it would be: We Had a Dream, The Oldest Profession, and My Friend.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR....missed giving my message to dRPanni.  NEXT time you are going to visit Miss Doris Dowling - please let her know that I have a VHS copy of her 1958 movie THE PARTY CRASHERS (featuring Miss Frances Farmer) - the quality is not great, but I would be glad to copy it for her if she would like to see it.

She does a great job and real Doris Dowling Part....mother of Twig, Mark Damon....  Yup she always did a great job!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.....so mad I missed the chance!

First off, Steve Kmetko is a Yooper.  He, he he.

Second off, congratulations Panni.

Third off, here are some of my favorite recent musical songs...

"Mr. Cladwell" and "Cop Song" from Urinetown.  (Is it just me, or is this show awfully Brechtian?)
"Breeze off the River" and "Big Black Man" from The Full Monty.
"Til Him" from The Producers.
"Not for the Life of Me" (both versions!) and "How the Other Half Lives" from Thoroughly Modern Millie.
"I Could Get you in JJ", "Dirt" and "For Susan" from Sweet Smell of Success.  (I would've loved to see this show.  I really enjoy the CD a lot.)
"When I'm By Your Side", "We Share Everything", and "One Plus One Equals Three" from Side Show.
"Popular" from Wicked.
"The Internet is For Porn", "Schadenfreude", and "My Girlfriend, Who Lives in Canada" from Avenue Q.
"Bounce" from Bounce.

There's quite a few more, but that's a decent taste, I think.

Of course, the AMC I was referring to was AMERICAN MOVIE CLASSICS where John Burke was the handsome host of the films' lead-ins and outs. I say was because I haven't watched AMC since they went to showing commercials during their movies. I don't know if he's still there or not.

Has anyone seen the 1996 film Rainbow with Bob Hoskins? The basic plot: Rainbow is about children who follow the whereabouts of a rainbow. One of the kids steals the rainbow's gold (yes! The rainbows gold) and this causes color to drain from the world.

It was the last movie I worked on before I moved down to Florida and was curious if I made the final cut.

He's not.

And they no longer even pretend to be AMERICAN MOVIE CLASSICS anymore.  Now they're just AMC.

KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN is now just KFC.  But at least they still serve the same product.  Which is more than you can say for AMC, a channel that shows Predator 2 eight times a week.

My goodness, what lovely posts.   John Ingle's late in life TV career is lovely.  He was the drama teache at Beverly Hills High (I'm sure of this - but if I'm wrong, then Hollywood High), and then he taught at my alma mater, LACC.  Very sweet fellow.

yes James Mitchell from Carnival and I was only kidding about John Burke being on All My Children. I think WEL knew that Mat meant American Movie Classics and not the soap. I decided to play it up

Yes, they don't like me over there because I wouldn't join in in their infantile "F%*K Columbia, because Columbia erred and put out a few open matte or pan-and-scan transfers.  Sorry, chummies, not the end of the world, and Columbia deserves many more kudos than brickbats for doing ninety-five percent of what they do incredibly well.  We've got The Swimmer, the Judy Hollidays, Bonjour Tristesse and hundreds of others, all in their original aspect ratios and all gorgeous.  I'll forgive them their handful of trespasses.
