Title: ATTACK OF THE CLONES

Well, you've read the notes, you can now put the notes together to make a lovely song, then you can sing the notes by posting until the cows come home.

Good Evening! Good Morning!

I cleaned my room.  I re-sorted my bills.  I put away my laundry.  I washed the dishes.  I put out the recyclables.  I took out the garbage.  Then I packed for my trip.  And now it's 3:15AM EST, and I'm sitting here watching an info-mercial for something called the "Magic Bullet"  - It's called a blender people!!!  So...

Oh - Blue and White plaid sleep shorts, old blue Izod polo shirt (I think it's at least 10 years old, if not 12-14).

"Queer Eye" was fun tonight, although Kyan didn't take the guy to a salon this time.  However, he did take him to get a hot rock massage - and he got down to his skivvies too!  So.. It's a trade-off.  ;)

It was fun watching this episode for all the "people watching".  "Oh, that's Hunter Foster... and there's John Tartaglia... Isn't that the guy from MTC? ... Hey, I worked with her a few years ago!...Etc., etc., etc."  And I just have to wonder if tonight's broadcast will have any effect on the show they were workshopping.  If it will help - or possibly hinder - a future production of it.

Question for BK:  Have you ever worked on a project - at whatever stage - that ended up getting some additional publicity from another "source"?  -Like the workshop on tonight's episode of "Queer Eye"?

Or has there ever been a project that started off as one thing, but somewhere along the line became something totally different... and it actually worked?

Well, I need to be up in about five hours... At least I'm not flying out until 10:30!  -I'm soooo over 6:30AM flights!

I'll do my best to post from Chattanooga, but I have a feeling I'm gonna be a little busier than usual this time round.  So, as our esteemed BK keeps reminding us.. "Keep the home fries burning!"

WOW!!!  It's a BLENDER!!!!

Goodnight.

Pretty Poison has Beverly Garland.  :P

My question for ASK BK Day....and of course the other DR's - of a certain age:

44 years ago today, Lucille Ball filed for divorce from Desi Arnaz - the day after completing all filming required under their mutual contract with Westinghouse.

If you were around then...and some of us were...how did you feel about the news?

1) Do you think CD of Dame Edna Sings Sondheim would be a seller?

2) Do you think the Disney voters will vote out Eisner?

3) Now that you acted again in Bullshit, do you think you will actively search out more acting roles?

4) What was your favorite TV acting role/episode in comedy, tv and variety?

5) Choose one film, tv show or recording that you'd like to "disown" and why.

6) There were the Golden Turkey awards for the worse films ever made. If there was a similar award who would you choose for the Worst Musical, Worst Book, Worst Score, Worst Actor and Actress, Worst Choreography, Worst Set Design, Worst Costumes. (In order to name the winners you have to have actually seen the show with exception of worst score which one can vote for if the heard it on a cd/lp/cassette/8track/45 EP)

7) Do you listen to NPR (National Public Radio. Similar to CBC1, BBC1 ABC {Australian Broadcasting Corp} [I think] and if so what are your favorite shows?

8) Do you really like answer these questions on Ask BK Day?

Dearest BK,  this is not an Ask BK question, which will be next, but is something up with the site this morning?  Nothing seems to be connecting, and it took me twice the usual time to read the last 2 pages of yesterday's notes because I had to go back to the discussion panel and reload when the next page wouldn't load in.

All right, it's off my chest.  My question is for you and your DVD mavens:  I'm going to list some films I'd like to see on DVD.  Perhaps you might be able to answer what's up with them and what films would you like to see released?

1.  VAMPIRE CIRCUS, a very guilty pleasure, but I don't believe it was ever released as a video either
2.  OH, WHAT A LOVELY WAR!  It was timely in 1969, and I think it should be released in honor of our current president
3.  THE INNOCENTS, maybe my favorite Deborah Kerr film
4.  THE UNINVITED, my favorite ghost film
5.  FLOWER DRUM SONG, DR MBarnum's beloved musical

Another bit of news, dearest BK, is that I ordered BENJAMIN KRITZER in cloth yesterday, since I figured I should have all three in the same edition.

I have to run.  I have a meeting with the good folk from Goodspeed and the wonderful Tony Walton about WHERE'S CHARLEY?  Oh, BK, would that you were available to play Charlie!

No questions from me today. I, like Mr. Elmore, had mucho trouble trying to read the posts from last night. I finally just closed the browser for about a half hour until I stopped getting the "too many connections" error.

I've been on a little theatre frenzy here. I recently saw Phantom (free tickets), Wonderful Town, Fiddler, Movin' Out and I'm seeing Wicked tonight and I'm going to try and see Sweeney at New York City Opera next week.

Capsule reviews:

Phantom: Ehh, not bad, sure don't know why it's run for 16 years, though.

Wonderful Town: Donna Murphy is great and there will be a Tony battle I'm sure between Ms. Chenowith, Ms. Murphy and Ms. Menzel (from what I hear, I'll know more tonight after I see Wicked). The show is well done on a scale a little bit higher than Encores but  not a full blown Greenwich Village apartment kind of production.

Movin' Out: A great music/dance piece. Not your standard musical theatre, but a good night of entertainment.

Fiddler: In my humble opinion, it's not the turkey it has been portrayed to be. There are problems in the show (direction being one of them) but it's not a stinker. Alfred Molina is perfectly capable as Tevye. He's not outstanding/amazing/wonderful, but he does a good job and will probably be nominated for a Tony. Nancy Opel (who is a wonderful actor, she was in Urinetown and played Evita many times on Broadway during LuPone's run) is not exactly right for Yenta. I don't know what the differences were between Leveaux and Barbara Barrie who was let go during rehearsals but Opel, who replaced her, is a little young for the role. Because she's so good as an actor, she hits all the notes and does what she should but, it just seemed like something was missing. Randy Graff as Golde was excellent. I love Miss Randy Graff and she does a good job here. The core of Fiddler is still there and it still moves me. Far From the Home I Love still makes me tear up. That's a short take on Fiddler.

I'll talk about Wicked tomorrow. The NYC Opera production of Sweeney has Elaine Paige as Mrs. Lovett and Mark Delavan (he's being promoted as "America's answer to Bryn Terfel") is playing Sweeney.

DR Ben,

Thanks for the reviews - they help bridge the gap between King Street (Mamma Mia and the upcoming Hairspray) and Broadway.

I saw Cabin in the Sky in 1964, when it played off-Broadway and starred Rosetta LeNoire and Kitty Lester. The audience begged Rosetta LeNoire for encore after encore of "Taking A Chance On Love" - I think it's the most encored number I've ever seen.

After the show I found myself on the subway with Kitty Lester. I told her that my Uncle Sam had seen the Ethel Waters production in 1940. To Kitty Lester and myself, that seemed like such ancient history. It was, in fact, all of 24 years. Now I'm reminiscing about a show I saw 40 years ago. I am my own Uncle Sam.

We interrupt our regularly scheduled Jovial and Jiggy discussions of Lighthearted Merriment and Good Humor for the following Unseemly Rant:

Oscar Wilde said, "If this is the way Her Majesty treats her prisoners, she doesn't deserve to have any."  And I am inclined to agree.  I have been dealing of late, by phone, letter, lawyers and doctors, with the appalling "Medical Care" afforded those in the old klinkeroo, specifically You-Know-Who.  Faxing legal documents such as Health Care Proxy and Power of Attorney to lock-up physicians who then say, "If I had known you weren't a medical doctor, I wouldn't have talked to you--and I must respect the [snicker] patient's right to privacy."

Then, in arranging various legal, financial, and real-estate documents with my dear, dear paralegal friend Debby, I am told, "Bill, you know this would be so much easier if you were married."  And then to read in Newsday that, according to more than one legal task force there is absolutely nothing in New York State Law preventing that--except for the refusal of officials to grant marriage licenses.

But the times they are a-changin', oh yes they are, and faster than anyone expected.  Why, in no time at all everyone will wonder what all the fuss was about.  But at least it's a good way to get people to stop thinking about the economy and the national debt and foreign relations and all those other irrelevant things in an election year.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled Lighthearted Frivolity.

And now I must make phone calls and submit documents and visit my legally unrecognized partner.  And, time permitting, do some shopping, housework, laundry, and destroy Western Civilization.

LOL Dan the Man - Desi and Lucy were contractually tied to Westinghouse to complete a certain number of the Lucy-Desi Specials.  They filmed "Lucy Meets the Moustache" with Ernie Kovacs and Edie Adams on the night of March 2 - Desi's birthday - and Lucy having completed her business obligations went into court the next day.

The board is acting strange this morning.  I've gotten the "Too many connections" error a couple of times.  It's probably the fault of the AOL guy BK was dealing with yesterday.

Which brings up my question:  BK, why are you still futzing around with AOL?  You are on cable!  You should be zooming around the web untethered to the AOL portal.  Aside from retaining any AOL e-mail addresses and/or screennames, what are the advantages of remaining with them?

Here's a question for all:  what are your favorite films that still haven't been released on DVD?  Mine are REDS and AN UNMARRIED WOMAN.

For Ask BK Day - What is the latest status on adding the archives of The Broadway Radio Show to this here site so I can hear a show I missed or re-listen to a favorite?  Every time I have asked this question, the reply has been "Soon, I promise" (a Sondheim reference).  I just wonder if there has been an update on when this promised addition will be made.  (Note - Donald did NOT put me up to this)

Elmore - Who is doing WHERE'S CHARLEY and when?  I missed the Christopher Fitzgerald version a couple of years ago and would live to see this show.  Even with the characters Charley and Fancourt from the play combined, it's a great show.

Musicals Tonight did CABIN IN THE SKY last fall and it is much better on stage than on film.  Of course Minnelli isn't the ideal director for a story about poor Blacks in the South.

I watched the Natalie Wood movie last night (taped from Monday - why spend 3 hours watching a 2¼ film?) and BK was definitely right.  At first it fell into the "so bad it's good" category with every cliché in the book, but by the end when they spend way too much time on her death, it was just plain bad.  Her mother (in that awful wig) made Mama Rose look kind in comparison.  And was Natalie really a friend of Marilyn.  The reason it was a cast I was unfamiliar with was that it was filmed in Australia.  I hated the fact that they used real friends of Natalie in documentary-like clips and that even film scenes and magazine/newspaper clippings used photos of the real people instead of the actors playing the roles.  But the saddest thing was thinking of "Last Picture Show", "What's Up, Doc?", "Paper Moon", et. al and wondering what ever happened to Peter Bogdonovitch.

I'm sure you saw that Lucy/Desi telepic on CBS last year.  I was surprised how much I liked it.  Rachel York and [guy who played Desi] did pretty credible jobs, I think.  The final scenes of the telepic depicted that last day of filming, and I was able to gain a sense of how difficult it must have been for all involved, particularly for Lucy, knowing what she was planning to do the following day.

Good morning DRs! I am happy to report that the beautiful state of Oregon...the Pacific Wonderland...is now the next state to issue marriage licences to same sex couples. It seems that in Multnomah County the law did not state that marriage was between a man and a woman!

Licences will be issued starting at 10:00 am today in Multnomah County. They are also waiving the 3  day wait period before you can be married, so there will likely be a number of same-sex marriages today as well.

Oregon has always maintained that it was a progressive state, and this proves it! I am very happy to be a native Oregonian today!

Re: AMERICAN IDOL

For those like DR Charles Pogue who are annoyed with the show, just watch the wild card.  In past years, to me, that is where the show has really changed.  Because instead of watching terrible performances, we should see some really good ones (hopefully).

Re: last night's show

I agree with DR MattH, I think as long as a person puts SPOILERS in caps, I don't think the Tuesday show can really be spoiled.  It's the results shows that nobody should post about until after it airs on the West Coast.

As for my favorites, the only one I really want to advance is the red-head, John Stevens. I just like the way he sings.

The only others I thought were noteworthy are the same 3 that DR MattH mentioned.

The first girl had a nice voice. But I sort of agree with Simon. She just didn't wow me.

I thought Jasmine (Hawaii) was okay.  The judges were saying that they love the sound of her voice/the tone ... and I agree with that.  I like the way her voice sounds, just not sure I love her.

The last girl (was her name Tiara?), has a very good voice. She is probably the one who should go through. Although Simon was not happy with her.

It will be interesting to see who the fans choose.  I would guess Tiara, John and Jasmine.

Chariots is still one of those pictures that I never "got".  I revisit it from time to time, but it still does nothing for me.  Reds, however, still never fails to sweep me into its story.

Okay, that worked although even when I cut and paste it doesn't recognize the bolds and italics so I entered them manually.

Dan - The films I want to see most on DVD are the THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT series - preferably in a boxed set with the 3 THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT films (director's cuts), THAT'S DANCIN', and one or two bonus DVDs expanding on the VHS bonuses.  I'd also like to see all ten Fred & Ginger films, and since Warner Home Video  owns them all it would be nice to see a boxed set like they are doing next month for the Marx Brothers.

Yes DTM - I did see the LUCY tv-movie.  Rachel York was good and the I enjoyed most seeing some of the recreations of routines in COLOR!  And yes "Desi" was good.

The play I am directing takes place on the night of the filming as Lucy reflects on her life - lots of highs and lows - and of course, what would the future be?  There was a lot of doubt in the industry that she could go on as a solo performer.

DRMBARNUM - weren't the Pontipee boys from Oregon?  It could be 7 Grooms for 7 Brothers!

Add these to MBARNUM's list and you will have mine:

THE UNDEAD, LIL ABNER, Carroll Baker's HARLOW, and SAINT JOAN w/Jean Seberg!

I don't think it's Minnelli's direction that is wrong for CABIN IN THE SKY. I think it's the lush MGM production. They were the wrong studio to make the film. Warners probably would have done a grittier job.

That said, I kind of like it. I've had it on laserdisc for years and enjoy revisiting it from time to time. Lena Horne has said on numerous occasions that Ethel Waters disliked her intensely (she thought Ethel might have been jealous of her), and I've often wondered if Lena's wonderful song "Ain't It the Truth" was removed from the film due to pressure from Miss Waters. In THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT III, Lena blamed the censors of the time saying they thought it was too racy (no pun intended) to have a black girl take a sensual bubble bath, but the number is so sensational that I'm surprised MGM would want to delete it unless there was pressure from someone somewhere. Always been curious about this.

I want the rest of the THIN MAN movies on DVD. I was so disappointed when AFTER THE THIN MAN and ANOTHER THIN MAN lost in that Warner poll last year, but I'm hopeful Warners is working on them, and that they and the other three (SHADOW OF THE THIN MAN, THE THIN MAN COMES HOME, SONG OF THE THIN MAN) will eventually see the light of DVD day.

As for musicals I'd like to see, of course the ones already mentioned: LI'L ABNER, FLOWER DRUM SONG, but I also want a bunch of MGM ones: EASTER PARADE leads the list, and PLEASE Fox start working on putting the most popular for the Betty Grable and Alice Faye musicals on your slate.

As for Universal, since they're packaging some of their other big stars from the era in boxed sets, how about a boxed set of Deanna Durbin movies?

And since I'm dreaming and know we'll never see it again, how about Goldwyn's PORGY AND BESS?

Welcome Der Brucer to Goddom!

Thank you. Goddom is lovely, and just down the street is Sommorah.

Here is a tale from my new perch abode:

While walking down the street one day, a senator is tragically hit by a truck and killed. His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the  entrance.

"Welcome to Heaven," says St. Peter. "Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you  see, so we're not sure what to do with you."

"No problem, just let me in," says the senator.

"Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is have you spend one day in Hell and one in Heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity."

"There's no need! I want to be in Heaven," says the senator.

"I'm sorry but we have our rules."

And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator, and he goes down, down, down (that's three "downs") into Hell.

The doors open, and he finds himself in the middle of a beautiful green golf course. In the distance is a club and standing in front of it are all  his friends and other politicians who had worked with him. Everyone is very happy and in formal dress. They run to greet him, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people. They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster and caviar.

Also present is the Devil, who really is a very friendly guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that, before he realizes it, it is time to go. Everyone gives him a big hug and waves while the elevator rises.

The elevator goes up, up, up (that's three "ups"), and the door reopens on Heaven where St.Peter is waiting for him .

"Now it's time to visit Heaven."

So 24 hours pass with the head of state joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by, and St. Peter returns.

"Well, you've spent a day in Hell and another in Heaven.

Now, you must choose where you want to spend eternity."

He reflects for a minute and then answers: "Well, I would never have thought it, I mean Heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better satisfied in Hell."

So Saint Peter escorts him to the elevator, and down, down, down (again with the "downs")  he goes into Hell. Now, the doors of the elevator open, and he is in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags. And it's hot, hot, hot (you know the drill) and the odor is just horrible.

Sweltering hot. Hot and miserable. The Devil comes over to him and smoothly lays his arm around his shoulder.

"I don't understand," stammers the senator. "The day before yesterday I was here, and there was a golf course and club, and we ate lobster and caviar and danced and had a great time. Now all there is a wasteland full of garbage, and my friends look miserable."

The Devil looks at the senator, smiles and says:

"Yesterday we were campaigning .. today you voted for us."

You know, I simply have no memory of it, so I must say that I don't think I knew.  At some point I must have known but certainly not when it happened.  Unless I've blocked it out.

1) I wanted to do a Dame Edna Sings, but you all know what happened there.

2) I haven't been following this particular story.

3) I have no interest in seeking out acting roles.  If people come to me and ask, and if it's fun, I do it.  I wouldn't mind doing a play or a musical, that would be fun, too.

4) I don't really have favorites, in those media, but I was partial to my guest shot on Doctor's Hospital, and the best comedy I did on a sitcom was on Angie.

5) I don't know that I'd want to disown any of the recordings, even though I'm not fond of a couple.  I suppose if I could disown a TV performance it would be The Young Lawyers, although I haven't seen it since it was aired in early '71.  I just remember being mortified when watching it.

6) I'll make it easy on myself - I'd give all the awards to the Dutch Cyrano, which I saw on opening night on Broadway.

7) The only radio show I listen to is The Broadway Radio Show right here at haineshisway.com

8) I do like answering these and other questions.

I don't know what was up early this morning but it seems to be working fine now.  If the problem persists let me know immediately so I can call the tech people.

I think Vampire Circus is out on a region 2 DVD.  I don't remember who holds the rights here, but a lot of these types of films have come out recently, so it may be on the horizon.  Oh, What a Lovely War was, I believe, distributed by Paramount.  Who knows whether they still have the rights.  They are also extremely slow in getting titles out, but they do do some interesting catalog titles.  The Innocents if Fox and I'd bet it's in the works.  The Uninvited is Paramout but Universal owns pre '48 Paramount films and has not been releasing much of anything.  Flower Drum Song is also Universal - the R&H stuff is tangled with rights issues that always have to be sorted out.  One can only hope.

And I'm most definitely available to play Charley.

I wish I had a definitive answer.  When we switched over to our new host, I was told that would be one of the benefits.  I have no idea how to do this myself, but I'll ask the question once more.

You know, one of the conditions of an ANNIE GET YOUR GUN DVD release was that there first had to be a Broadway revival....and that happened.

MAYBE that is the case with FLOWER DRUM SONG (different composer-heirs-rights, I know) and since that happened last season, maybe we will see it soon!

Woohoo. Several years ago...actually 20 years ago...the film composer Albert Glasser sent me several tapes of the soundtracks to his movies which he had on reel to reel. Well all these years I have had them on audio cassette and now I finally had someone transfer them to CD! Just got them delivered to me at work today and now I am listening to the soundtrack music for ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE! What fun! It has not only the scores used for the film but also the scores (cues? I don't know what they are called) that didn't turn out...where someone flubbed or it just didn't sound right to someone..anyway in between each cue or whatever is someone saying "Ok, take 2" or something similar. Lot of fun and it the musice from ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE is some of my favorite film music of all! Also got his scores from PARIS MODELS, LAST OF THE WILD HORSES, HUK and some others! He didn't have access to all of his scores, so he just made copies of the scores that he had at his home! All of this resulted from a fan letter that I sent Mr. Glasser when I was in high school! Nice guy!

BK, I'm curious as to what you mean when you write that Cabin in the Sky is a "hybrid."  DH and I saw it for the first time several months ago and both enjoyed it; granted, neither of us has seen the staged version.

If you want to see Eddie Anderson really go to town in a dance number, try to somehow wangle a screening of Buck Benny Rides Again (a Jack Benny / Rochester movie).  He has a couple of dance numbers in that which show off his incredible talent to advantage.

Dan the Man, I would love to see the Fred Astaire / Ginger Rogers movies on DVD.  I can't believe they're still not out there.  Ditto the ORIGINAL versions of the original Star Wars trilogy (not the tweaked "special editions").   Ditto Jean Harlow's movies, and Joan Crawford's early ones (I'm thinking Our Dancing Daughters, Our Blushing Brides and Our Modern Maidens as a box set).

Who else here would like to see a DVD box set of Late Night with David Letterman?  (Note: Not Late SHOW with DL.)  Special Bonus: the complete run of Dave's single season daytime show that ran through 1980.

Yes, I know the cost of a 5x per week show that ran for 11 years would probably run well into the millions, but I'm dreaming here, people!

Ask BK...
I think I'm attacked by clones, too.  There's a folder called Recylced, and, anything I delete ends up there.  If I delete from there, a clone is there, etc.  What were the specific instructions you were given to stop the cloning?

How do you feel about characters expressing self-pity on the musical stage?  It's an issue I'm constantly grappling with, as I need something very dramatic for the climax of my new show.  Seems to me that in the heyday of Rodgers and Hart, self-pity was one of the best things around; then, in the golden era of musical theatre, hardly a shred of self-pity existed.  Finally, in the era of miserable musicals, self-pity became all the rage once again.

Unrelated note on the Queer Eye musical theatre writer: Don't overlook the fact that the amount of money the writers will receive from either ASCAP or BMI for having songs broadcast on television (and countless re-runs) is much greater than the cost of the reading at Arclight.  In that financial sense, his show is already a big success.

yes DR KERRY I think that was called Lucy & Desi: Before the Laughter.

It was okay...Maurice Benard was Desi and he did okay.  I think the thing that did me in on that one was the actress hired to play Vivian Vance - even though she was in it for just a short while - it was pretty bad.

I am hoping all the LUCY fans at HHW have read Lee Tannen's LOVING LUCY &  LOVE, LUCY the "autobiography" written before she started the "Lucy Show" and locked in a drawer until Lucie found it and published it a few years ago is also pretty good.

And of course everyone has to come to Indianapolis and see "Loving Lucy!"

Yesterday I contributed a post congratulating  the Senate on taking responsible action on the Gun Control Bill - having been successfully amended, it was all set for passage before lunch.

However, during lunch the NRA did the dirty-deed:

Fox News (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,113046,00.html):

Gunmaker Liability Bill Goes Down in Defeat
Wednesday, March 03, 2004

WASHINGTON — Senate Democrats gunning for a ban on assault weapons unexpectedly forced down a bill Tuesday that would have prevented gun manufacturers from liability after the bill's sponsor said the amendment made the measure too unpalatable.

Bush said during his last presidential campaign that he supports renewing the ban on at least 19 types of military-style assault weapons. But he has not stood up in strong support for any legislation calling for a ban.
Nonetheless, Democrats accused the bulk of Republicans of kowtowing to the National Rifle Association (search) after Executive Director Wayne LaPierre (search) sent a letter to GOP leaders announcing that the NRA opposed passage of the bill with its amendments and note recorded votes for future use.

"... Having made our decision, this vote on final passage is a key vote for the NRA and will be used in our future evaluations and endorsements of candidates for the U.S. Senate," LaPierre wrote.

"It is satisfying to know that the truth has come out... it's a pity, the American people have to look and say whose country is this?" Lautenberg said.

There were some comments yesterday about the negative consequences our two party system; well, Dear Readers, it seems the fault lies not with the Parties, but with the Lobbies.

I sort of remember that one.  And Lucie Arnez had a mad-on for CBS and swore that she would never bring any of her own Lucy & Desi projects to the network.  But I guess bygones can be bygones...

When I was in college, a friend and I tried our hand at an I Love Lucy musical.  It never gelled because we could never find a strong enough story concept that retained the spirit of the TV show.  Eventually, we stopped trying when we realized that we would never have a chance in hell in acquiring the rights.  We did kick around a few fun ideas, though.

In the mid-nineties, I talked Universal into trying to remake THE UNINVITED, my favourite ghost story too.  I got a very nice payday to write a script.  We went back to the original book, put the focus back on the sister like it is in the book (though the brother and the love story remain intact), updated it to the American South (they wanted America...the south was where I could get that gothic touch of old England), and we  didn't have to shy away from the lebsian undertones that run throught the book.

I thought it was a pretty good...if rather longish... script...but it didn't get much further than that because it became victim of Ms. DeLaurentiis' (the producer) and my breach during DRAGONHEART.

But I really think writers shouldn't remake movies they love too much.  I believe in the old John Huston adage, "Why do they remake our good films, why don't they remake our bad ones?"  I actually looked at it as an adaptation of book...which is considerably different...than an adaptation of the movie.

So many movies I wish were on DVD.  I'd like to see BBC's AGE OF KINGS.  A series they did of Shakespeare's War of the Roses plays, from Richard II through all the Henry plays to Richard III.  Sean Connery played Hotspur in it.

Thanks Jane. Labour day? It is Labor Day here on Monday - for some reason the  the Labor Party etc use the American spelling but usually we spell the word as Labour. Labour day celebrates "organised Labour" and the original fight for a 40 hour week.

DR William E Lurie,

I'm sorry not to get back to you sooner; I've been in a production meeting all day about WHERE's CHARLEY?, which will open in July at Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, CT.  We begin rehearsals on June 8 (?) and they're casting Charley this week.  The fabulous Tony Walton is designing and directing, and I think it will be a lot of fun.

According to the studio checklist,"Cabin in the Sky," "Honey in the Honeycomb," Love Me Tomorrow," "In My Old Viriginia Home," and "Taking a Chance on Love" were used from the original score. Harburg and Arlen contributed "Happiness Is Just a Thing Called Joe," "Li'l Black Sheep," "That Old Debbil Consequence," "Some Folk Work," and "Ain't It the Truth." Roger Edens contributed "Forward," "The Prayer," "Dusky Jezebel," "Sweet Petunia," and "But the Flesh Is Weak."

I don't think any amount of petitioning will convince the Gershwin estate to let go of PORGY AND BESS. I am glad I got to see it once, but I suspect we'll never see it again. Could they have gone so far as to have burned the negative and destroyed all copies in existence?

DR Matt H -

Could you expand? What's the issue here? Thanks.

From what I understand, the Gershwin estate loathed the film, the way the score was handled (abbreviated), didn't like the casting (except for Sammy Davis), and have forbidden it to ever be seen again. They've turned down all offers for video release or rights for television airings. They want the movie gone forever, as if it never existed.

To be honest, the soundtrack album for the film was my preferred way of listening to this score.

Speaking of burning negatives, etc.

I have long heard that when MGM decided to film "Gaslight," with Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman, that they bought the negative and all copies of a British version of the play and destroyed them.

This past weekend, that old tale was put to rest when KQED aired "Gaslight" starring Diana Wynyard and Anton Walbrook.  It was just under 90 minutes long and is stunningly performed.  It has been a while since I saw Boyer/Bergman but I remembered it as being a bit deliberately paced.  Not so this version.

The print was from Turner, so it was apparently out of the MGM archives.

The British Gaslight has long been available on video (I've had it for at least five or six years), so I don't know where that rumor got started.  Suppressed, yes.  Destroyed, no.

Here's something funny:  I just got a really cool Czech poster for the film Frances and the star is billed as Jessica Langeova.  It's a sort of "Follies" like poster, with a profile of Ms. Langeova deteriorating into weird ghostlike shapes.

DR Matt H,  I believe there is a print of PORGY AND BESS at the Library of Congress.  I've heard the rumor for years that the Gershwin family was unhappy with the film, and it appears to be true, so  I was surprised they approved the Glyndebourne production, in which Porgy rises up and walks at the end!  I guess the goat cart and the cripple act were all a con.

The English Gaslight is included on the new DVD of the American Gaslight.  Very nice looking it is, too.

Fat doesn't matter in the Atkins diet, Jane.  I ended up having a bacon cheeseburger without the bun and it actually was very good.

I've seen Porgy and Bess, the film, several times over the last few years, as my friend owns a 35mm Tech stereo print of it.  The estate has, in fact, allowed that print to be shown a couple of times.  And just to clear up what they really loathe about - it's the redone orchestrations of Andre Previn.

In order to do that and place the correct order, if you've been delaying ordering, if there's any way for you to complete your orders in the next day or two it would be most helpful to me.

No to the first part, yes, sort of, to the second part.  Several things that ended up in the Kritzer books were first used in my One from Column A column - where Meryle Secrest was supposedly writing a biography of The Real A's life.  That's where those seeds were planted, albeit in a much different form.  And the musical David Wechter and I are sort of working on started life as a film script by me.

It's obviously the day when the entire family gets together for a big feast of turkey and canberra sauce.

Actually, I myself went on the Canberra (the ship, not the city) to Teneriffe and Dakar in 1973 to observe the longest total solar eclipse in 600 years.  That was the cruise on which the famous Isaac Asimov said to me--and this is a direct quote, biographers take note--"Your fly is open."

Good Evening!

Greetings from Chattanooga, TN!

[move=right,scroll,6,transparent,100%]CHOO-CHOO[/move]

Good flights!  Great weather!  It's warm!  In the low 70s!  *Of course, I brought a lot of layers, so... Guess I won't need to layer them that much.

I got to the hotel around 3:30, and then walked around the area for a while - my only chance to do so over the next few days.  Lots or remodeling, renovation and refurbishment going on here.  Even the Convention Center apparently just underwent a major, $50 million dollar upgrade - which includes a full-spectrum lighting system so that it's always "daylight" inside.  I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

As for the piano... we'll see if the "situation" gets remedied by the morning.  'Nuff said for now.

And now to catch up... we'll see what I remember...

DR Lulu - I was also a big fan of David Letterman's daytime show.  I LOVE Edie Mclurg.  Her characters always made me laugh, and her voice is so distinctive to say the least.  As for Late Night... I can't imagine all the "stuff" involved to get those to video/DVD.  -But it was nice when Bravo was re-broadcasting the "classic shows" for a while.

Flower Drum Song - It's not on DVD?  :(
The local independent channel in DC would show this every three months or so as part of their Sunday afternoon musical movies - or sometimes on Satuday nights too.  I remember spotting the "kid" from those Hawaiian episodes of "The Brady Bunch".  And the whole "I Enjoy Being A Girl" sequence cemented my love for musicals!  *And, as I think I've mentioned here before - and embarassed myself before - "I Enjoy Being A Girl" was one of the songs I sang for my first musical audition in high school.  I just really LOVE(d) the song!

As for HHW and/or AOL problems and glitches... It's Windows, it's computers, it's technology... Problems will arise.  Glitches will happen.

*BK - The one thing to watch out for with AOL's "Bring Your Own Access" plan is when you're on the road.  If you ever use dial-up, "technically" they're supposed to charge you the regular monthly rate for that billing period - since you're now using AOL's own access network (again).  I remember thinking of switching to the "BYOA" plan when my brother wired my parents' house for wireless internet.  "How cool!  I only have to pay $9.95 a month now!"  Well, not so fast...  Check your fine print... just in case.

As for the Glyndebourne Porgy & Bess... I love the audio recording!  However, the lip-synced video presentation drives me up the wall!  I've tried watching it a few time, but I've only made it through a few sections before switching to something else.

*When I worked on Carmen Jones at the Kennedy Center, Harolyn Blackwell was playing "Mickey".  At dinner after the final performance, I was able to talk with Ms. Blackwell for a few minutes.  I told her how I loved her rendition of "Summertime", and that it always amazed me at how slow she takes it.  I asked her if the tempo was her choice or the conductor's, Simon Rattle?  Her response, "Well, have you spent a summer in South Carolina?  It's HOT!  Trust me, you would move slow too!"   ;D

DR WFO - I'm so sorry you and Joe have to deal with all that sh*t.  I hope you can take comfort - in some indirect way - that many days have already passed, and that "soon" is getting "sooner" each day.

OK - I think that's all for now.  I must ready myself for a supposedly very nice reception they're holding for the Audition Staff in about an hour.  Should be fun!

I've got taters and beets roasting in the oven for dinner (to be paired with leftover turkey).  I'll be catching up with the rest of today in the meantime.

However, to Jose:  ALTON ALERT!!!!  9:00 on FoodTV, new episode: I PIE!

I've got a history with Lemon Merangue Pie.  It was one of my mother's best recipes, one that she didn't pass down to mysisterthebitch or myself.  It was a graham-cracker crust, with a really good lemon custard filling and a merangue topping.  She didn't try to make it look alike a Southern Belle's beehive hairdoo, but let it peak here and there and put it under the broiler to brown a bit.  That was one of her best recipes, along with her pumpkin pie, that for which her father in law (my grandfather) would accept no substitutes.  The lemon merangue pies were particularly special for him, since the lemons came from the trees in his own back yard.

Maybe I can learn from this show how to make my own lemon merangue pies.  Maybe I can surprise my Dad.

I'd really like that.  Everybody keep their fingers crossed!

Here I am, not posting. As I'm about to go out and buy bottled water for the wonderdog, I guess it's okay to pause and post. Why bottled water for the dog you might ask. Well, to put it bluntly, his stomach has not been right, since we moved to CA, if you know what I mean without my getting graphic about it. He only does his thing the usual twice a day, no problem there,  but it's kinda loose. I finally took him to the vet the other day and they found no problem. So my theory at the moment is that perhaps it's the water. I'm experimenting by giving him bottled water for a week or two to see if it makes a difference. (And I'm also adding rice to his dry kibble.) Any ideas from fellow dog people would be welcome.

Joe & I want to thank DRs Panni & Jose & JRand & al & etc (who is this guy al?  He seems to have co-authored a lot of books.) for their vibes & wishes et cætera.  Joe's sentece is half over, and this sentence will be over when I type the period.  There.  How's that for xing a paragrab?  Oh, an Edgar Alan Poe reference!

DR MBarnum:  What part of Oregon do you inhabit?  Corvallis and Yachats (pr. ya-hots) used to be my old summer stomping grounds in the 70s, and believe me, the grounds around there got well stomped.  You can keep Ben, but hands off Gideon!  Even if he does have a white beard like mine nowadays and a grown daughter on teevee.

DR Robin:  I neglected to offer my sympathies on your concussion.  Joe had a rather nasty concussion in 1989, breaking one of those big glass water-cooler bottles with his head, and that started a chain of events that led to his current problems, i.e. EMS (Eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome).

Didn't someone here ask recently about EMS?  It is not Emergency Medical Services, nor is it Electro-Magnetic Propagation.  It is a neuromuscular disease caused by ingestion of contaminated L-triptophan (an amino acid sold in health food stores).

I did see Joe, of course, did a bit of shopping, picked up my car after having the exhaust fixed, and picked up a new battery for his car.  But no time to destroy Western Civilization.  Sorry.  Perhaps another day.

I also stopped by to see Joe's Mom, which was pretty heartbreaking, since she is rapidly sinking into dementia.  I find conversation means less than touch.  Lots of hand-holding, hugging, and hair-stroking seems to bring a smile to her face.

So now that I have seen the season finale to Enterprise--another goldang cliff-hanger, wouldn't ya know--there is hay around here that definitely needs to be hit, BK, not to mention the sack.  Oh yes, the sack will be hit very, very shortly.

G'night, all of y'all, and thanks for making life fun.

I would love to post until even the poultry comes home, but alas, whenever I try to, an error message pops up saying that my computer doesn't have enough memory for me to post! :(  I'm giving it one more try, though.  Hopefully this one will go through!

A few days ago, somebody (I think it was you, BK) asked what happened to Maya.  She and I have done the ol' switcheroo, so to speak.  She's off achieving goddess status on Sondheim.com, and I'm here starting from scratch.  I think that I'm on official order from her to replace her, but I'm not sure.  Regardless, she's doing well (And will be staying with me for a few nights next week!) and is littering (Littering, I tell you!) the internet with kind words about HHW.

While I'm posting til the cows make their triumphant return, I'd like to ask if anybody has a production script of "Assassins".  I start rehearsals for the Oswald scene tomorrow (I'm directing), and the published copy of the script doesn't include Zangara's Italian monologue.  Does anybody have the text of that monologue?  Thanks in advance.

Have the cows come home yet?  If so, then I suggest we sing a rousing chorus of "Hello, Dolly" (with altered lyrics, of course) and call it a night.

When Theatre Charlotte did ASSASSINS here, I auditioned for Guiteau, and when I didn't get it (very unfairly and foolishly as the cast actor turned out to be a weak singer and the cakewalk up to the gallows ended up being a nothing moment instead of a showstopper since he found it impossible to sing and move at the same time), I asked the director if I couldn't assist with the production, so I ran two slide projectors throughout the show. I had a script then, but the only one I have now is the published edition. Sorry.

Jenny, you tell Maya that DR MBarnum says that she ought to stop in and say hello now and again just so we know she is doing well! We miss seeing her little face here!

The two times I've done Assassins, the Zangara's Italian monologue was never in either version of the scripts we had.  Thankfully, the first time, our Zangara spoke fluent Italian, so he was able to come up with the rest of it on his own.  The second time, we turned to the language department of our local university.

*You may be able to post on sondheim.com and get an answer.  Or even try the list-serv.  ???

-And, who knows?  Maybe MTI's rental materials now include the rest of the Italian monologue.

**From what we gathered after various conversations with various people, since Weidman did not write the actual Italian monologues, that's the reason it's not in the published script.  ???

***And PLEASE tell Maya that she is more than welcome to post here on HHW still.  Doesn't have to be hourly, daily or weekly... But we do miss our beloved Swishy.  :'(

-We would at least like a Morgan Le Fey update.  Well, I know I would like one.

Yes, we would treasure a Maya return.  In fact, that would be a true Mayan treasure.  Yes, she should e-mail me post haste and she should also haste post.  You are doing very well, lingo-wise, dear Jenny.  Pointy party hats and colored tights and pantaloons will be in evidence tomorrow, that much I can tell you.

I'm passing on all your messages to Maya, and I imagine she'll be returning some time soon.  How could she not, when such lovely people are asking her to!

I didn't realize that MTI's script doesn't include the Zangara monologue.  Thank you for telling me.  I suppose I'll turn to one of the Italian teachers at school for a translation.

Now, you refer to Maya as your "beloved Swishy", but wouldn't Sarah be the Swishy?  Are they both Swishy?  Are they really one person?  I just want to clarify!  You never known! ;)

To quote Britney Spears (ugh) - Ooops, I did it again.  *Sorry, Maya-Papaya.

There is only one Swishy and that is Sarah.  We had other names for Maya, like Maya the Force be with you, and Very Warm for Maya, and Maya Heart is so Full of You.

Brilliant names.

Maya's going to be lurking any second now.  Might I suggest bombarding her with colorful and attractive "Welcome back" posts?

Aaaand she changed her mind.  I've had quite enough of playing middle man.  ::Scratches head::  Why am I still awake?

I had a nice e-mail from Maya and I do hope she'll return when and if she's ready.

Jenny, I just tried pumping the speech through a on-line translator located at http://www.systranbox.com/systran/box (http://www.systranbox.com/systran/box) .  It came out like this:

Colleghi
a noi... pensate che siate powerless? Autorizzili!

I can't guarantee the exactness of it, but maybe you can play with it some or find another on-line italian translator.

Hmmm...now that I look at this, it seems like it doesn't translate words it doesn't understand.  You might have to do some tweaking here...

Thank you so much so much for that translation, Dan!  I'm sure we can use it somehow.  Thanks again!

You are awake because haineshisway.com is ADDICTIVE, like Diet Coke.

Diet Coke and haineshisway.com are both freakishly addictive, that is true.

::Waits for Maya to finish reading your email::

She won't tell me what you wrote (Killjoy!), but she seems pleased as punch with your reaction.

Well, I've reached the point of exhaustion where I no longer care where the cows are or if they ever find their way back.  They can never return like poor old Charlie on the MTA for all I care, but I am going to bed.  I made a noble effort to post til the cows come home but...such is life.

Goodnight, fair and gentle readers.

Okay, people, cue up the brass section!  I want a big comeback with lots of fanfare and hoopla!

I'm back.  BK wrote me an entirely too sweet and gracious e-mail, and I would have been a total ogre if that had not moved me to come back.

I really did miss you all, but I think a break ultimately did me well.  I have lots to catch up on, I'm sure, but there's plenty of time to do that.  I really am moved by the love and friendship on this here site.

Anyway, Jenny is waiting for me to post so she can get to bed.  She's not a night owl like me.

Isn't she the best though?

I'm happy that you're back, Maya...now I can go to bed!

Well, I had a horrible night's sleep last night, so I'm afraid I shall be Mayor of Wussville and head to bed at this unseemly early hour tonight.  See all y'all tomorrow!

I missed all the drama of Maya's return! Welcome back, Mayuska!

Now I'm all alone out here in HHW-land after a 14 hour writing day. But I basically finished so that all I have to do tomorrow is to go over the rewrite of the rewrite of the rewrite... What was it Gerrude Stein said?... A rewrite is a rewrite is a rewrite... I can't see straight, DRs who aren't here. I don't even see dead people. Enough of this monologue. I'm going to get ready for bed and come back near midnight to celebrate the birth of me.
