Un Bel Di....
The Merry Widow has some wonderful scenes and music.
Carmen, of course, with its stepsister Carmen Jones!
Still no one here, and I guess I should head downstairs and get the laundry out of the dryer and folded. That should be LOADS of fun! NOT!
WBBL.
HELLO????????
............just me and my ....(nope he's gone too)
... but I also believe PORGY AND BESS amd SWEENEY TODD are operas.
Overlooking your possible distain for Sir Andrew, if the above are operas, why not "Evita"; and Cameron notwithstaning, it would seem "Miss Saigon" should also qualify.
der Brucer (not pushing his luck by nominating "Chess")
Yesterday's topic was lines from plays and musicals, so I'll start a topic; since a lot of operas are also based on plays, do our DRs have any favorite arias, duets, or ensembles from the opera world? To make it a bit easier, I've included favorites from CANDIDE, since in 1956 it was billed as "a comic operetta" and a lot of these moronic current productions like Trevor Nunn's miss the fact the score is an operatic one, but I also believe PORGY AND BESS amd SWEENEY TODD are operas.
I've a question for Super Bowl fans. Am I wrong or didn't the Super Bowl always used to be held in a city with a temperate climate? When did that change? Does Detroit have an enclosed stadium or are they risking the possibility of bad weather?
I don't know the name of it, but it's the women's duet that everyone knows (or should) from "Lakmé."

"Sous le dome epais" (The Flower Duet)
British Airways used it in their commercials for a while.

I shall be truant for the day . I'm attending a funeral some three hours or more drive away. ( a family friend for 55 years who would have been 80 in a couple of weeks time).
And I forgot two ensembles I love from CARMEN:
The Quintet in Act Two
The Card Trio in Act Three
From DakotaCelt:
I have added HOODWINKED to my list of movies to see...
Yes, you did forget to mention that. Especially to some of us in Portland.
DR MBARNUM.....I recommend Ms Durbin's FIRST LOVE....the movie, that is.
From JRand:I suggest SPRING PARADE, also with Robert Cummings
Me too.
I think everyone should rush out and see MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS.
elmore, I didn't know what the film was back then. It just came to Ashland and I had only seen a couple of previews for it. The music is wonderful.
DakotCelt congratulations and welcome to the clouds.
Soup? I'll give you soup! In a bowl. For those who partake it will be a SOUPER BOWL.

Thanks DRMATTH - your post appeared in the middle of my frenzy and answered my question!
Well DRMBARNUM - There's not much I can add to your KING KONG precis, except to say, you forgot to mention the music!
LOL! There was a lot of it!
When Luana Anders came on ADAM-12, all I could think of was her yelling at Mark Damon...."Are those my stockings? What are MY STOCKINGS doing here? What did you say about me?" Whew....and then her sister became Miss Indiana!
Jrand: You know, at the moment the stories are all very different, but I'd be surprised if there wasn't some common thing between them at the end of the day. I did tie one story to another in a very subtle way, if anyone is paying attention. But, my goal was to write interesting stories but have them all be very different in tone. There's one very silly fun story, a couple of moody ones, etc. Oh, I guess there is one thing that runs through all of them - they all take place in LA.
