Dear Reader Jennifer:

pent (pent) alt. pt. & pp. of PEN--adj. held or kept in; penned (often with up) (" pent up emotions")

My object all sublime
I shall achieve in time
To make the punishment fit the crime,
The punishment fit the crime.
And let each prisoner pent
Unwillingly represent
A source of innocent merriment,
Of innocent merriment!
--from The Mikado by W. S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan

Does anyone know if Gilbert was ever knighted?  Or wasn't he the equal of Mick Jagger?

I think I remember hearing that Gilbert was knighted at a very advanced age and that he made it clear to Sullivan that he was not happy about the long amount of time between their respective knightings.

Good wishes/wibes to DR WFO.

Great review, DR Jay. Enjoyed reading it.
When I'm REALLY old I want to make my stage comeback in FOLLIES. With any luck I'll die before the reviews come in.

Gilbert was indeed knighted in 1907 (or so says the online biography I found)

oh dear... I just read about his death:

"This end came on the 29th of May, 1911. He was giving swimming lessons to two young women in his lake at Grim's Dyke, when one of the women, getting out of her depth, as she thought, called out for help. Gilbert dived in to help her, but died of heart failure in the middle of the lake. "

Poor Gilbert.  At least he got top billing in the collaboration with Sullivan ;)

Hmmmmmmmm.....the book The United Artists Story "Hawaii" did not have a stereo release.  I saw it at the drive-in so who knows?

The 70mm Newsletter says it was recorded in 6-track stereo but was "believed to have had a mono soundtrack."

http://www.in70mm.com/lists/blow_up/year/1966.htm

So it is possible.  I also checked a couple of posters for the original release that are posted on the internet and NONE of them advertise the film as in any stereo process.

Specifically, what is done to the character of Fiyero in the musical?  He marries--Glinda?  And how does he die?  (Hope that's not a spoiler!)

Well, I haven't seen it, but from the fact that it is Fiyero's voice as the Tin Man in "March of the Witch Hunters", and he sings that was Elphabas' spell that turned him so, I surmise that Fiyero is changed into the Tin Man. In Elphaba's "No Good Deed" she voices the curse:

Let his flesh not be torn
Let his blood leave no stain
Though they beat him
Let him fell no pain
Let his bones never break
And however they try
To destroy him
Let him never die!

Probably the most famous "Jogging Jew" was Harold Abrahams who won Olympic Gold in 1924 (Chariots of Fire)

der Brucer (wondering if BK has Vangelis spiriting him along)

"The Jogging Jew" sounds like a Chagall window

Sounds like an episode from "The L-Word".

WICKED SPOILER WICKED SPOILER WICKED SPOILER WICKED SPOLER

Do Not Read for Fear of RUINING WICKED!!!!

Boq becomes the Tin Man (Nessa turns him into it in anger after he tries to leave her) and that is indeed Christopher Fitzgerald's voice singing in "March of the Witch Hunters".  I could tell you what happens to Fiyero but that would ruin it I think... unless you really do want to know

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]Good wishes and vibes to DR WFO and Joe.[/move]

[move=right,scroll,6,transparent,100%]A very merry unbirthday, to you, my dear friend MDS![/move]

DR George - you are sooooo welcome!  I love that cd!  And, much to my consternation, a few weeks ago I said that "Darling Children" was an Anthony Newley song: well, IT ISN'T ! !
"Darling Children" was written by the late Rusty Magee, who was married to Miss Fraser.

My Media Check is quite simple today:
THE BAND is in my dvd player (THE LAST WALTZ), car cd player (THE BAND - self-titled album, their second album) and in the computer cd THE BAND'S GREATEST HITS.

Thanks DR WFO for your attempt to answer my question.  I know the phrase "pent up emotions", and I've seen the verses you've printed (above).  I feel like an idiot, because I still do not know what you meant by the phrase below. I'm not too familiar with the details of your case (except that it's been very trying & you keep referring to the evil ones as the MacBeths).  Anyhow I wish you good vibes regardless.

Now we've got some POSTS, baby.

Jrand: What's peculiar about the link you provided is that the film is listed as six track stereo and then the little addendum says "believed to have been one of the many 70mm mono releases"  Something doesn't compute.

Let Wicked be a surprise to you
... that's my suggestion.

Don't find out any of the details of the plot in advance, and you're likely to enjoy it more.

Having seen Wicked, well, anyone who's seen Wicked understands what happens to various characters.  I think anyone who hasn't seen Wicked should not be told.

But, apparently, some people are begging to have it ruined for them.  Or I could be confused about this.

Best wishes to anyone who teaches math on Long Island, or dear friend of the same.

Happy Birthday (OZ time) Michael. Welcome back WFO. Good thoughts to you and Joe. Good to see you posting Kerry.
DVD player (last night) "My House In Umbria" - Maggie Smith
CDs: "A Might Wind", "Cold Mountain" and Billy Joel's "An Innocent Man".
don't think "Cold Mountain" will get played too often but certainly it will higher on my list than last year's oscar winning "Song".

FOLLIES has always worked for me, as a young adult when I saw the Broadway production and now even more passionately as someone well into middle age who can look back at choices he made with some humor and also some regret.

The scenes involving just the Marx Brothers in THE COCOANUTS are among some of the funniest they ever did, but the early talkie filming at its most unimaginative and that stale, miniscule plot that serves as the foundation of the piece help to keep the film from being loved. I have to admit, even with the awful Oscar Shaw and charmless Mary Eaton, I have watched the film twice as many times as most of the MGM ones like AT THE CIRCUS.
