Well, you've read the notes, you are up on all there is to be up on, and now it is time for you to post until the fistful of cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: HABERDASHERY!
-
George is apparently sitting at his computer in a drunken stupor and has been for an hour.
This is the worst case of WUSSBURGERING that I can recall.
-
Just watched all the extras on Fistul of Dollars. The featurettes are done quite simply, and with none of the idiocy of the Warners documentaries. Here we get only Leone scholar Chris Frayling, Clint himself, and a wonderful short bit with Monte Hellman, who, as it turns out, helmed a network prologue for the film's TV premiere - giving Clint's character a moral reason to be doing all he's doing. It's included and boy is it wrong. Of course, Mr. Hellman didn't have Clint, so it's an actor whose face is never shown, who's about six inches shorter than Clint, with a pancho that's close but no cigar. The main actor in the new scene is Harry Dean Stanton.

All by myself. Thanks for the answer to my LATE NIGHT question DRCP.
Hmmmmmmmmmm.....Wednesday.
Things are humming along CD wise and DVD wise - so everything seems to be doing okay in Studio City.
I am still awaiting information about employment, but that is a topic for another day.
Last night I watched KIM with Mr Dean Stockwell and Mr Errol Flynn....and for an adventure movie based on a Rudyard Kipling yarn, thar shur weren't much adventure in it. I saw it many years ago, I think I was in the first grade, and the movie was 7 years old then.....I don't think I liked it much at that time. It was okay.
-
Well....my first question....then for ASK BK day this week:
What work of non-fiction do you think best covered a real crime in the truest detail?
There have been several books on the Kennedy-Dallas event that I thought were quite good.
-
Back again and still ALL ALONE.....AGAIN....NATURALLY.
My favorite Sergio Leone western has to be ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST....even though it is MBARNUM'S most UNFAVORITE western movie. Closely followed by FISTFUL OF DOLLARS.
And I have another question. After watching a couple of episodes (there were only five) of a Goodson-Todman show called WHAT'S GOING ON?, what do you and the DR's think are the most successful game shows of the past and present - combining entertainment and prizes and fun for the audience?
I have to go with WHAT'S MY LINE?, TO TELL THE TRUTH way back when (not the updated syndicated versions of either which always seemed to feature Soupy Sales) with BEAT THE CLOCK coming very close. I will also add the original HOLLYWOOD SQUARES.
Today I think WIN BEN STEIN'S MONEY (no longer in production) and JEOPARDY, followed by LINGO.
Dumb shows that never made any sense to me CONCENTRATION, JOKER'S WILD, and YOU DON'T SAY.
-
A very quick good morning to all.
Two things.
I get such a kick out of my Mom (you’ll like this one Tom). They’re talking about passing a law about all the sex offenders. My Mom just said, “Why don’t they just send them all to an island like they used to.” I started cracking up—“An Island?” I asked. “Yes, like Australia. :o Didn’t they used to send all the criminals there?”
Aging parents can be a real hoot. So how does it feel to be on an island, Tom? :D ;D Worse, what was your crime? ??? ;D
I was to tired to join the discussion last night but the only comment I want to make is “Those who do not learn from the past, are condemned to repeat it.” There were a lot of terrible things done but hopefully we have learned from them and will not do them ever again.
Then you have ten year olds shooting and killing their Mom. Go figure..... That's progress for ya. :-\
Good job news JRand! ICU! :D
Gotta run!
-
Good morning, all! I loaded all of my Liz Callaway discs into my computer and she's singing "Joey, Joey" to me as I type this. I wish I had a car to cruise in as I listen.
I'm embarassed to admit that I've never seen a Sergio Leone film, so I have no favorite. I like the music I've heard from them.
Last night, after LAW & ORDER SVU, I watched the first 30-40 minutes of LI'L ABNER, which I hadn't seen in years. I had forgotten that Michael Kidd didn't adapt the choreography to the fim and that DeeDee Wood was responsible. Since almost all the original cast seems to be in the film, I'm sure it was an easy transfer. I'm still unsure how I feel about the new vocal arrangements after listening to Lehman Engel's originals on the OBC for so long. It was also fun to see Tony Mordente dancing in a comedy after only knowing his work in WEST SIDE STORY.

Duck You Sucker aka A Fistful of Dynamite aka Once Upon a Time...the Revolution aka Giù la testa

A shame to be transported to Paradise! I am almost ashamed to admit there are no convicts in my family tree - just Welsh/Scottish settlers. I"ll have to ask OzDerek. He is from Tasmania. He'll know more about convicts. ;)
Young Derek has a new job these days - no computer access at work and totally different hours.
-
TOTD: Not for me. Not westerns and not Clint Eastwood.

Doesn't the Micawber family in DAVID COPPERFELD end up in Australia? No major criminals there, as I recall, and I believe they relocate willingly.

What a day at work yesterday. :P Many of the bigwigs were in town. The head bigwig was very nice, but others were high maintenance. I had to smile a lot and appear cool, calm and collected (Katy Winters or no Katy Winters).
So, Jack, practice your smiling. A lot.
Off to breakfast and to practice smiling.....
Maybe I shall just look at everyone today and say, "HABERDASHERY."
-
Kerry, there is a touching and wonderful interview/article about Barbara Cook in this week's New York Times magazine. Jose mentioned it earlier. Did you read it (I ask because of your quote by Miss Cook)? If you like, I can e-mail you a copy.
-
Dumb shows that never made any sense to me CONCENTRATION, JOKER'S WILD, and YOU DON'T SAY.
LOL! I loved Concentration when I was a youngen. It was my favorite game show. I loved the sound of the revolving squares--"Cha-kunk....clunk!"--and then trying to solve the puzzles. One of the great thrills of my young life was on an NBC Studios tour where I got to see the actual set.
-
Question for BK: what stage musical do you think has the most perfect opening number?
-
What work of non-fiction do you think best covered a real crime in the truest detail?
The only book I think I ever read in this genre was Helter Skelter. Now that was a good read before going to sleep at night ::). I had nightmares for weeks.
-
I have no favorite Sergio Leone films.
But...a couple of my interviewees had been offered the lead in FISTFULL OF DOLLARS...Richard Harrison and Tony Russel both turned it down...Tony Russel said it was one of the worst scripts he had ever read (worse then Wild, Wild Planet?), and the pay for the film was next to nothing, so he did a spy film in Egypt instead.
He ran into Clint Eastwood shortly after Clint finished filming FOD. Clint complained about the lousy script, the heat, no money, etc....he had no idea what a break this movie was going to turn out to be!
-
JRand54, I will have to tape that game show you mentioned! I have never heard of it.
-
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY
A great book is "Raven", about JRand's old neighbor Jim Jones.
-
Yestereday, DR Tomovoz told us:
For DRs Jennifer, RLP and MAtt et al
How the choice was made...
And DR Danise asked:
WWSS?*
(What Would Simon Say?)
"Too Broadway!"
-
"What a poor choice of canticle."
-
I also prefer THE GOOD, THE BAD, and THE UGLY though once I get reacquainted with ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST via that new transfer, I may switch over to it. I like it very much.
-
I almost choked on my Diet COke this morning when I read the USA TODAY writer about AMERICAN IDOL thought last night's top two performances were by Vonzell and Anwar!!! And he thought Anthony was the worst!
What planet do these people live on?
-
And for some reason, the VARIETY TV critic reviewed AMERICAN IDOL this week, and his choice for the final two:
Carrie and Anwar!!
Well, I think Carrie will be there (though I find her robotic and unengaging). I'd be shocked if Constantine isn't the other.
I think Anwar has a very good chance of going home after tonight.
-
Got back too late to post last night.
JR, my print of WP is a tape made from a 16mm archival print that may or may not be housed in a large University archive that may or may not be located near the City of Studio. :) I'm going to have to get it out today--it may indeed have the MCA TV opening, which would explain the exit music. It does have all of the cut material (including the scene with Mantan Moreland).
And the run-through of Pajama Game went amazingly well (dress isn't until Thursday, and I have another gig that night, so I will be missing dress). Whoever costumed this show did an amazing job--it's more of an early 60s look, but it is absolutely spot on.
-
Let's hear it for Harry S. Truman, former president of the United States, who was also known as "Haberdasher Harry!"
:D
(Even if he was a Democrat. ::))
-
I, like DR elmore, have never seen a Sergio Leone film. Is this a bad thing??
-
A Pajama Game Ask BK/DR question: I may be misremembering this, but wasn't Hernando's Hideaway ghosted by someone other than Adler/Ross and interpolated into the show on the road? For some reason this is ringing a bell with me, and all the scores have completely different manuscript for this number, which is what got me to (mis)remembering in the first place.....
-
I was E & T although not by choice, The electricians came yetserdy to repair the damage done by the falling telephne pole and since we had electrical wotk we were going to get done "eventually" we paid these guys to do the other stuff as well. However no electricity = no computer time.
By time the elctric was restored the Vixter was home from school and we were in a whirlwind of homework (she needed quizzing for two tests she was studying for) and dinner and voice lessons and girl scout and then it was bedtime so I have not caught up.
Probably won't catch up today either as I have closings and then the Vixter has a dress/technical rehearsal so there goes the whole evening !
My Ask BK /Jose/Larry and all you other astute DR's:
what Broadway (or other) songs would you recommend for a 11 -12 year old girl ...
her voice teacher says she can select her next few numbers, (teacher likes the show tunes) so far she has sung "In His Eyes" and "Someone Like You" from J & H, "Castle in a Cloud", "Bring Him Home". "I Dreamed a Dream" "and On My Own" from Le Miz, and "Music of the Night" and "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" from Phantom.
She has been leaning towards 'Never Never Land' from Peter Pan and "I'm Not That Girl", "Dancing Through Life" 'Defying Gravity" and "The Wizard & I" from Wicked. can you suggest any perhaps less known but appropriate songs?
-
DR JMK I love the music! Thank you, thank you thank you!
-
I don't care for westerns, so I don't have a favorite Sergio Leone film. :-\
And while I prefer non-fiction for my reading, I'm not that hot on crime books. :-\ (On the other hand, how many people do you know who read cookbooks for fun? ::))
-

Yuk! Yuk! Yuk!

In my freshman year of high school I read "The Day Kennedy Was Shot" and the "The Day Lincoln Was Shot" )both by Jim Bishop if I recall correctly) for a term paper I did for social studies.
Later in high school (junior or senior year) I had to do reports on "Helter Skelter " AND "In Cold Blood" (bloody thirsty bunch of teachers I had, hey?)
I remember reading "In Cold Blood" while I was home alone, when when my parents and the boys came back from wherever they were I nearly wet myself when the front door opened
-
Promises, Promises and Li'l Abner have arrived from Amazon.
Ya might as well save your moolah as far as PP is concerned. It's no different from the Rhino disc. The cover is slightly different. New album notes are so-so.
-
I'd recommend "Love Makes the World Go 'Round" from CARNIVAL. It's a sweet, lovely song. From the same show is "Beautiful Candy" which is a more complex song to sing, but if she's already tackling songs from PHANTOM and LES MIZ, perhaps that might be more challenging.
-
I got my Errol Flynn set and ABNER. I'll have to watch THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX first, even before ABNER.
-
Here's a question for BK, and everyone else.
A few days ago, at another site :o, the question was asked "Who are your favorite movie villains?" The usual suspects were trotted out.
That's not my question, because it's too, well, usual.
Instead, let's go in the opposite direction.
What are your favorite movies that don't have villains?
What, no villains? No bad guys (or girls) to fan the flames of the action? YES! Stories that don't have villains can be just as interesting, and closer to how most of us live our lives.
For example, The Right Stuff doesn't have a villain. Plenty of heroes, but no villain!
The only film by Ron Howard that I've truly enjoyed might be thought of as Right Stuff's sequel, Apollo 13. Talk about drama! But no villain.
So, there's a couple of examples...anyone have any other favorites?
-
TERMS OF ENDEARMENT.

George is apparently sitting at his computer in a drunken stupor and has been for an hour.
This is the worst case of WUSSBURGERING that I can recall.
I hurt...pity me. ;) Yesterday, I helped with the load-in for the tour of STOMP that's here in Olympia for two performances. We had to unload the entire set. It's mainly a two-story frame with attachements and the floors for both levels! We had to unload carts that held the panels of the flooring which consists of two layers (attached to each other) of 3/4 inch plywood sheets with interlocking tabs, then a layer of something else on top of that, then we taped all the seams, then the entire floor was painted black. Then the upper level had to be assembled. We were told that some of the carts weighed as much as 1500 pounds!!
Anyway, after the load-in, I came home and napped. After only a couple of hours, I had to go back to the theater and usher for the show. I had to stand for another five hours because the entire 988-seat Washington Center was sold out (and the Thursday night performance is sold out, too)! So, when I got home last night, I logged in and tried to catch up (or even ketchup), but I couldn't even think. I was just able to read yesterday's notes before I had to go to bed. So, I'm now all awake, I've read all the notes, caught up on all the posts and am now leaving to go to work after posting why I was a total Wussburger last night. It wasn't exactly a drunken stupor, but pretty darned close. ;D
-
Well....my first question....then for ASK BK day this week:
What work of non-fiction do you think best covered a real crime in the truest detail?
There have been several books on the Kennedy-Dallas event that I thought were quite good.
I love Truman Capote's In Cold Blood, and I thought Ellroy's My Dark Places was excellent.
-

Ya might as well save your moolah as far as PP is concerned. It's no different from the Rhino disc. The cover is slightly different. New album notes are so-so.
Thanks for the info. I was wondering about that. I bought the first CD release of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and when the 2nd CD was released last year, I bought it also. It was the same situation. Everything on the CD was the same. It had a whole new booklet but no new information that I felt I needed to know. I sold it to a friend for his daughter for less than what I paid for it. :P
-
My Ask BK /Jose/Larry and all you other astute DR's:
what Broadway (or other) songs would you recommend for a 11 -12 year old girl ...
Whatever you do, don't let anyone con her into singing "A Call From the Vatican," from Nine, no matter how topical it sounds!
;)
Even "How Long Has This Been Going On" (Rosalie, 1927) is a bit precocious. (But keep it in mind for three or four years from now, when it could really work for her!)
-
Question for BK: what stage musical do you think has the most perfect opening number?
Everyone always cites Funny Thing, so I'll cite Li'l Abner - perfectly sets the tone, introduces you to the milieu of the story, and you meet many of the leading players.
I also think It's a Perfect Relationship is a wonderful first song, because it makes you fall in love with Ella Peterson, whom you spend the rest of the show rooting for.
-
A Pajama Game Ask BK/DR question: I may be misremembering this, but wasn't Hernando's Hideaway ghosted by someone other than Adler/Ross and interpolated into the show on the road? For some reason this is ringing a bell with me, and all the scores have completely different manuscript for this number, which is what got me to (mis)remembering in the first place.....
This I have never heard.
-
HABERDASHERY!
For heaven's sake, let the darling daughter sing something that's not from one of those mega-shows.
Someone was saying the sound on the new Promises is superior, but they're saying that only to justify having made the purchase - it's exactly the same.
-
Here's a question for BK, and everyone else.
What are your favorite movies that don't have villians?
At first I was going to say "Singing in the Rain," but I think a case can be made for Lina Lamont being the "villain." This requires more thinking time.
-
I'm now off to work!
-
What are your favorite movies that don't have villians?
Moonstruck
-
Whatever you do, don't let anyone con her into singing "A Call From the Vatican," from Nine, no matter how topical it sounds!
You should hear my imitation of Hermione Gingold singing "A Call From the Vatican".
Then again, maybe you shouldn't.
-
I, like DR elmore, have never seen a Sergio Leone film. Is this a bad thing??
It is only bad unless you like grimy, violent, dubbed westerns starring a lot of Italian folk and a few American actors whose U.S. careers had peetered ....just my opinion, of course! LOL!
-
BK, did you buy THE ENCHANTED SHADOW (1960) when you bought all of those Hong Kong movies? I just watched it last night (my friend Dave sent it to me) and it was very spooky...it is a ghost movie and gave me more then just a few goose-bumps!! And, it is beautiful to look at...very colorful while still being creepy.
-
DR MattH, I was disappointed with most on Idol last night. But I liked Vonzell (who i didn't used to like). She has improved a lot. And really seems to have fun.
I wasn't really crazy with most of the others. And I hope Scott will go home. I can't imagine that he wouldn't be in the bottom 3 (my guess would be anthony/anwar/scott).
-
S. Woody: What is a "villian"? :o :o :o :o :o ;D ;D ;D
I've seen movies with Lillians but not villians.
Yes, I, for one, think it's a bad thing not to have seen a Leone movie. He's a master director and his films are mesmerizing to watch. Not for everyone, I suppose, but I always think you should see films by the masters. My faves are For a Few Dollars More, Once Upon a Time in the West (GREAT), and Once Upon a Time in America (which has one of my favorite motion picture scores ever).
-
We have had well over a week of glorious, beautiful weather here in the City of Brotherly Love, but I think I'm beginning to suffer from the Eldoraldo Syndrome. I'm kind of tired of all this perpetual sunshine and I'm pining for a rainy day.
-
Good Morning! Good Afternoon!
-I guess I'm meant to sleep until Noon nowadays... Ah, well...
The rain and storms that were supposed to come today have been pushed to tomorrow. Consequently, my motivation to start pulling stuff out of my closet has also been delayed. We'll see. However, I do have a list of stuff and things I know I can just either put right into the trash, recycling bin, and/or bin for the thrift store. And I have a feeling that once I get those things set aside, the rest of the packing should go rather quickly and smoothly.
I hope.
::)

Re: last night's TAR (SPOILERS FOR MBARNUM IF HE DIDN'T WATCH YET).
Okay so I liked last week's to be continued. However if a leg is going to be that long DO NOT BUNCH THEM UP. How annoying to do so much work and then to be bunched up both at the train station and at the following task. I really hate when they do this so close to an elimination.
Although that said, Gretchen and Meredith and Lynn and Alex still always manage to finish at the bottom.
I was disappointed that the cabbie taking them to the wrong castle was the deciding factor in who was eliminated. But I was so happy to see the losers go. I was also very moved by Joyce and the fast forward. And I loved the competition between Romber (who got married Saturday btw) and Ron/Kelly. Especially at the finish line.
And one last thing. I'm sure some people were not sure if last night would be an elimination or not. But Phil commenting on the grannies placing BEFORE THE ELIMINATION totally ruined that for me. I mean obviously if he's gonna say they have placed the highest of any oldies then it had to be an elimination.
Oh and btw, I know you guys all love the grannies. But they must be the ones with a horseshoe up their butts. They have been way too lucky (coming in last on non-elims and the to be continued). If they make it to F3 I will be totally shocked. But it's still quite an accomplishment to be top 4.
-
I probably should watch a Leone movie again, sometime...my dad loved his films, but as a kid, they disturbed me...I just can't rid myself of that feeling...of course THE ASTOUNDING SHE MONSTER and THE BRAIN EATERS both disturbed me as a kid as well...but I got over it.
-
As for Sergio Leone films... I know I've seen a couple of them before - most likely on Channel 20 in DC when they would run their Westerns weekends. But that was many, many years ago, and, alas, I do not remember them well.
However, I did catch Clint Eastwood's interview on "Fresh Air" last year, and he had some wonderful comments on making those films.
-
Now, Audie Murphy westerns I love...everyone is clean-cut and not so much blood spurting...I always feel good after an Audie Murphy western.
-
DR vixmom - As for song selections for the vixter, let me check my files... In the meantime, I'm guessing from the rep you listed, she's a belter. A mixer? What's her upper range like?
-
Wow, what a change in temperature! Yesterday was 70+. So were the few days before. But today it is rainy and it is only like 50F. :(
-
Page Three Dance!!
MAMBO!
MAMBO! MAMBO!
-
WHEW!!!
I'm still here!
<------------------
-
At first I was going to say "Singing in the Rain," but I think a case can be made for Lina Lamont being the "villain." This requires more thinking time.
As a matter of fact, I cited Lina as one of my favorite film villians at that other cite. Along with Mrs. Iselin, Hal 3000, and the Rev. Shaw Moore in Footloose, the latter because he redeems himself at the end. Redemption is good for the soul.
-
As for non-fiction books.. Hmm... I know I read a bunch of them when I was in pre-production for Assassins. Some truly fascinating and disturbing information. Unfortunately, the exact titles escape me at the moment, but there was one on Hinckley that I thought was particularly insightful.
I also remember reading five books - long, small-print books - for my AP History course in high school. They were on my summer reading list. Lots of topics, some dryer than others. The Lincoln assassination, the Louisiana Purchase, Winston Churchill, the Vietnam War, the radical movements of the '60s. Unfortunately, I also had to juggle reading - and keeping track of - the five books I had to read for my AP English class at the same time. -Which included "Crime & Punishment". Needless to say, my last month of summer vacation that summer was not really much of a vacation.
-
S. Woody: What is a "villian"? :o :o :o :o :o ;D ;D ;D
I've seen movies with Lillians but not villians.
Whatever can you be talking about?
::)
;)
-
OH!!!
And I was literally LOL when I loaded up today's Notes. Apparently, BK's discussion of his session with Marina has greatly influenced the ads at the top of the page. One particular "vendor" seemed a bit unseemly. -At least when I loaded up the page.
-
I've seen movies with Lillians but not villians.
And why, i\I ask you, do his friends call him Lillian?
-
And speaking of seeming unseemly...
Have any DRs seen that new Brawny paper towel commercial? The one with the Brawny man in the kitchen, making a cake, holding a puppy... dropping a dollop of frosting on the counter.. etc., etc., etc. Well...
It runs in a short and long version - I'm guessing in 15 and 30 second spots. Well, last night, I happened to catch the long version, and when it came to the last shot... As the Brawny man is walking towards the camera holding the puppy... Hmmm... I guess Brawny paper towels do have multiple uses!
:o
-
I'll be back...
Laters...
-
A second question, more for the DRs than for BK:
How many times a week do you eat out?
We're kept up-to-date on BK's dining pleasures, because he tells us about them. And I think his way of combining the pleasures of the table with the pleasures of his friends a wonderful way of giving pleasure to others, as well.
I'm curious about the habits of the rest of us.
Der Brucer and I usually find ourselves dining out about once a week. It gives us a chance to relax away from home, and to simply chat. I can't help wondering if our ability to talk after twenty years together might be part of why we're still together twenty years on.
-
If you hate "American Idol" posts, please skip the following:
After last night:
My bottom three: Anwar, Scott and Carrie.
Not one of them did a service to their songs.
Carrie: Betcha by golly wow that she did not have a CLUE what the song "MacArthur Park" is about...and the half-march/half-prance she did to move around the stage -- all in keeping with the rhythm of the song, of course -- looked stupid, especially in that c/w dress. I tried listening with my eyes closed, but she didn't "feel" Jimmy Webb's lyrics. Every time she puts her hair in those tight curls, it seems to rob her of something vital...personality, perhaps??? Yes, she can hold a note...but SO FREAKING WHAT?
Anwar, Anwar, Anwar. Blah. Blah-Blah! Pfffft! At least he didn't run riffs on all the held notes...but in holding those notes, he didn't put any vibrato into any of them...they were just intoned notes... I want "singing".
Scott: As Ryan so lamely calls him, "Scotty Body". He doesn't do it for me. Never has. I first wanted him to have a fighting chance to prove himself. Last night, his song choice was good, but his performance made me cringe. I think he stacks up favorably with Nikko and Anwar....the latter of whom is overdue for leaving, along with Scott.
Anthony: I agree about the nothingness of the song choice. It's what he does worst...selecting songs. BUT he sang it beautifully, and it's about "singing". I wish someone would just say, "Here! Sing this song!" and let him survive on the way he sings something worthwhile.
Vonzell: I would rather have heard Nadia sing the telephone book. Vonzell is perky and fun and will be a great addition to the 2005 American Idol tour as a finalist. But enough is enough is enough.
Bo and Constantine: Let's draw straws. No, I didn't think Constantine's song choice was dynamic enough. But I also did not think Bo's performance "original" enough...it compares too closely with the original version. And that's called "imitation," like what he did with the BS&T song that the judges loved so much. I'm still a Bo fan...he's got SO MUCH potential. But so does Constantine.
They're my two finalists. What they do from now on will determine which will get my vote for "American Idol."
-
I'd like a frosted puppy, please! :D :D :D
;D
-
If you hate "American Idol" posts, please skip the following:
I don't "hate" American Yodel or the posts, I just can't be bothered watching the show. Horseracing, y'know.
-
Speaking of frosted puppies....
Peggy is recovering nicely from her surgery. She's cranky, and sore, but she's over her grogginess, which is a relief.
If we hear a yelp from Marty or Fletcher, it serves them right for poking their noses where they don't belong!
-
I watched a couple of minutes of AI last night, and I have to say that what I heard of Vonzell was pretty horrific.
MBARNUM if you are going to tape WHAT'S GOING ON? get to it, because it only lasted 5 weeks and they have already shown 2 episodes!
-
Yes I think FORUM has a wonderful opening number - but my FAVORITE opening is from THE PAJAMA GAME with "The Pajama Game-Racing With the Clock".
-
Good vibes for Peggy!
-
DR vixmom - As for song selections for the vixter, let me check my files... In the meantime, I'm guessing from the rep you listed, she's a belter. A mixer? What's her upper range like?
You must understand I am functionally illiterate as far as musical terms... her voice teacher says she can hit a high "C" with no problem, I do know that when she sings 'I'm Not That Girl" she has trouble hitting the low note on "girl" and the teacher made it the same note but higher so she sings it "up" rather than "down" does that make any sense at all? I feel like a babbling idiot trying to explain this :P
She is still working on her voice projection but since they usually sing with microphones she has been able to "cheat" a bit on the belt out sections... I do not know what a 'mixer" is except the kind you make cakes with...... :D
-
I have a "Ask Jose " question... have you realeasd any CD's of you singing/playing? If so what are they, if not WHY THE HECK NOT? You have a lovely voice and what a pianny player!
-
Ok I'm off to a closing I may have to catch up tomorrow!!! Laters!!
-
Strange doin's in the Brasilian music department: One of my Tigard Pops Choir members just got back from Bolivia, where she went crazy buying bootleg CDs. She brought me back a 2 CD comp of Bossa Nova tunes. Most of the recordings I have already, but there was one interesting item: Astrud Gilberto singing The Girl from Ipanema. What's so interesting about that, you may well be asking? Well, I'll tell you: it's a disco version!!!
-
I eat out at least once a week. My buddy Mark and I almost always have lunch on Fridays...before he got himself a boyfriend we would usually meet for breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, as well...this is what has caused me to gain a few pounds over the last couple of years! I blame it all on Mark!
Although if I would get to the gym more often, perhaps things would have kept their shape better. ::)
-
Two TV notes:
Alias is sure having fun with the casting. Not only do they have Joel Grey as "another Mr. Sloane," next week's TV Guide just arrived in the mail and lists Sonia Braga as a guest star.
And, special note for DR Jose: There's a new episode of Good Eats tonight: "Field of Greens." (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/show_ea/episode/0,1976,FOOD_9956_37188,00.html)
Field of Greens
Was your childhood eating plagued with plate-loads of slimy, foul-smelling leaves? Host Alton Brown shows how to turn fiend to friend when he takes on dark leafy greens. Tune in and you might learn a thing or two about nutrition too.

A film with no villain. Hmmmmmmmmmm.......
That's harder to think of than I thought it would be. Hmmmmmmm......
-
Does THE GHOST AND MRS MUIR have a villain? If not than I would list that film as a favorite.
Also, YOURS, MINE, AND OURS.
-
As for reading cookbooks...
:D
-
As for eating out....
Well, today is Wednesday, and so far I've eaten out three times this week. And I believe I ate out each day last week too. And when I was in Indy... And when I was in Memphis... And when I was in New York... Well...
I go through phases where I'm cooking practically every day, three meals a day, plus snacks. Then I go through phases where I just want the convenience of someone else doing the cooking. And when I usually eat out, it's not a big financial burden usually $4.00-7.00 at a time. However, I do like to have a really nice $it-down dinner at a restaurant at least once a month - usually twice.
Qualifier: Since I've been home the past week and a half, I've been having breakfast and lunch at home, and then heading out for a small dinner somewhere in the neighborhood. But I have been known to eat three meals out in a single day. Even with a fully stocked cupboard and fridge at the apartment.
-
I saw a wonderful film with no villain just last night: GENTLEMAN JIM starring Errol Flynn. Not only does it have no villain. It practically has no conflict either. Despite all that, it's a wonderful film and one of Flynn's best performances.
I've seen Leone's Once Upon A Times's and the first Clint Eastwood movie. I remember little or nothing about any of them. I remember vaguely liking Once Upon A Time In The West, but I've never been able to sit all the way through it again since that first viewing.
I get out to eat maybe once a week (probably two of those times a month are with BK). I used to go out once a week with pals Larry Drake and Pat Skelton (was once Wally on All My Children), but though we keep saying we have to revive that ritual, we haven't gotten around to it. Maybe this will be the impetus.
I read a lot of non-fiction history and theatre. I'm currently reading LONDON, the Wicked City, a fascinating study of London's sexual history from William the Conqueror on up. So it deals with all sorts of criminal activity. I also have a huge collection of Jack the Ripper material...the best of which is The Complete Jack the Ripper by Donald Rumbelow, whose guided tour of Ripper haunts I took.
-
As for movies without villains...
Hmmm... The closest thing I can think of is "Cinema Paradiso", although Time could be considered the villain in that one in a sense. I shall have to think some more on this one...
-
PAGE FOUR DANCE!!!
Ooohh!!!
It's CHA-CHA Time!!!
-
I also have a lot of books on Richard III and the murder of the princes in the tower. I think he was innocent of the crime.
-
Part of the problem with seeing Leone movies is if they're viewed on TV, not letterboxed. They are hideous to see that way, and are basically unwatchable. Seeing the new Once Upon a Time in the West DVD would make a convert out of anyone - it's gorgeous.
-
DRMBARNUM - I watched DO KALIYAN yesterday. For the uninitiated, this is the Bollywood version of THE PARENT TRAP. I liked it, lots of nice scenery and the songs were good. Om Prakash is always funny, the leading man wasn't so good looking, but his acting was okay. Wonder Baby Sonia in the dual roles of the twins wasn't very IRRITATING and kinda homely - but after all - who could really be better than Hayley??
-
DR VIXMOM did you have some photos you wanted re-sized. Email them to me and I will post them for ya!
-
Last night on WHAT'S GOING ON? - what was going on was that Miss Audrey Meadows was at Princeton University dancing with a chorus line made up of Princeton students in drag for their annual show- The Princeton Triangle Show. And guess who the director of said college show was? Mr. Michael Stewart!

I am glad that you survived it! LOL! Baby Sonia sort of scared me with all of that lipstick..no child should were that much lipstick...or any lipstick, for that matter!
Ya, that leadsing man, BISWAJEET, had seen better days...he looked much better when he was in BEES SAAL BAAD...but as the 60s wore on his waistline increase...but in the late 50s early 60s he was pretty nice to look at! And you don't even want to see him now!
Yes, Om Prakesh is a fine character actor!

For those who watch LOST, when is the summary episode they've been advertising?
Also, I believe this week is the DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES summary episode.
-
What work of non-fiction do you think best covered a real crime in the truest detail?
My recent favorite in this category is Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City, "a compelling historical narrative about the Chicago World's Fair of 1893 and the two men who shaped its place in history--an architect of almost magical ability and a prolific serial killer known as the Devil." Just don't read the description of the killer's methods while eating your lunch, as I did (quite by accident :P)
-
A Pajama Game Ask BK/DR question: I may be misremembering this, but wasn't Hernando's Hideaway ghosted by someone other than Adler/Ross and interpolated into the show on the road? For some reason this is ringing a bell with me, and all the scores have completely different manuscript for this number, which is what got me to (mis)remembering in the first place.....
DRJMK, I've never heard a reference to its being by another writer either. If it were, my guess would be their publisher Frank Loesser, who supposedly either bullied his client Meredith Willson into reshaping "My White Knight" or reshaped it himself. I would guess from your comment about the manuscript's being different, that the song was written late, possibly out of town, and another copyist working for Mathilda Pincus did the copying of it.
-
A second question, more for the DRs than for BK:
How many times a week do you eat out?
DR SWW - Not nearly enough!

Harumph! In my day, we never needed any of those new fangled summary episode thingies to watch Dynasty or Falcon Crest! We just watched it, and if you missed anything, tough noogies!

Just reading the reviews of THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY makes me shiver!

True crime! James Kirkwood's AMERICAN GROTESQUE about homophobe pig Jim Garrison, portrayed as a hero in Oliver Stone's JFK, and his ridiculous attempt to destroy gay Clay Shaw by persecuting him as part of the Kennedy assassination plot. What's even sadder is that Oliver Stone continued this lie.
IN COLD BLOOD, a great book which may be a bit colored by Capote's crush on one of the killers.
HELTER SKELTER scared the crap out of me when I first read it.
JACK THE RIPPER: THE FINAL SOLUTION, which Patricia Cornwell "ignored" in her Ripper book, even though she came to the same solution as to the Ripper's identity, has proven to be one more theory only, but it was the first to my knowledge to promote the royal conspiracy theory.
LIZZIE BORDEN: THE UNTOLD STORY is a fascinating book from the mid-1950's pushing the theory that Lizzie was innocent and Bridget the maid was the killer; the author uses the example of France's Pepin Sisters as maids who went mad and killed their employers.

This place certainly reeks of hospitality and good cheer, or maybe it's this cheese.

Finished my second short story, which I'll now go through and add stuff to.
Miss Juliana A. Hansen will be here shortly to pick up a rehearsal tape for her duet with Mr. Guy Haines, and perhaps, if she's in the mood, we'll have a spot of lunch.
I got two packages from amazon and one from my DVD Academy. The latter included copies of The Notebook and After the Sunset. Are either worth watching?
And why is it that every description on the back of the DVD MUST say "with mile-a-minute twists" about every fershluganah movie. Enough already.

Good Afternoon!
Ah, the joys of Photoshop Elements! One could get "addicted" to it! -And I haven't even tried some of the other basic features yet.
After some trial and error, here are some of my results...
Oh, and I changed my avatar again, as well as uploaded some other options. Always keep 'em guessing.
-
DR Rodzinksi - Sorry for the delay in posting these, but it took me a few tries to get these formatted properly. I do wish the flash was a bit brighter, and the pics not so grainy, but what can you expect from a B&W disposable that had first started "snapping" at least a year ago if not more. -Not to mention the countless number of airport x-ray machines it's gone through. -But they keep telling me as long as it's 800 and below... In any case... I guess you could call these "gritty and artistic".
Jose in Black & White, Series I[/i]

Or better yet, this way....

Hmmm.... Sometimes they're there, and sometimes they're not...

Here is my favorite random B&W shot from my recent stint in NYC. It was taken down in the East Village at Sara Delano Roosevelt Park right on the edge of Chinatown.
-
BK, I have heard very good things about THE NOTEBOOK.
-
THE NOTEBOOK I have read some good things about as well...After the Sunset I have no clue!
James Garner and Gena Rowlands play the older couple, and some TV no Names play the same people when they were younger. It's one of those things based on a "best selling" novel that I never heard of.
Sounds like LIFETIME tv, but was directed by Nick Cassavetes.
-
DR RLP what was for lunch today?
-
Most weeks, I eat out three times. I have lunch with friends twice a week, usually Monday and then either Wednesday or Thursday. I often get together with a couple I like very much on Friday night for dinner. On the weeks that we don't do that, then I go out by myself on Saturday for lunch at a buffet.
-
DR CP - London The Wicked City sounds like a fascinating tome - but there is NO information at all about it other than the title on Amazon.com - and I know how you feel about the "reviews" there and their "writers", but if you enjoy the book, you might think about putting a couple of lines there to encourage others to pick it up.
-
AFTER THE SUNSET would interest me more for the cast alone than THE NOTEBOOK (though Garner and Rowlands would certainly be worth seeing in their supporting roles). But I haven't seen either one.
-
I watched THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX today. The color is luscious, of course, showing up most impressively Orry-Kelly's magnificent gowns for Elizabeth in a rainbow of bright colors.
But there is speckling and some print damage present and, worst of all, scenes where the three Technicolor strips are out of alignment and there's color ringing all over the place in addition to being out of focus. I guess it would have been far too costly to go back and fix those scenes where the strips didn't match, but it took me right out of the movie every time it happened (which were long shots mostly).
The close-ups and medium shots of the stars were sharp and gorgeous. Yep, Errol ranks up there with Tyrone Power in terms of male beauty. Breathtaking.
-
Just read a couple of reviews of AFTER THE SUNSET.....I quit reading and lost interest when I read the name Salma Hayek.
-
Also meant to mention how superb Korngold's music score is the ELIZABETH AND ESSEX. It's majestic, lush, and endearing. What a master he was!
-
DR MATTH - last night in KIM made in 1950 - Errol Flynn seemed to have some skin problems I never noticed before. Time marches on, and I guess it's true that it does march right across your face. :(
SUNSET cast members that might compel me would be Woody Harrelson and Pierce Brosnan.
-
MR BK will your short story collection have a common thread?
-
Smoked turkey on dark rye with lettuce and tomato...and a bit of cheese.
-
JRand54, I discovered WICKED CITY in a bookshop in London last year. The book was well-represented in most of the bookshops in town in their English history section. My feeling is those that are looking for such material will find it without my help...and, if they can't, well, it ain't going to diminish my enjoyment of the book. I waste enough time on the internet without starting to write book reviews on amazon.com.
-
OK - I think that's enough photo editing today. -Yes, I changed the B&W pics again... and again.. So...
-
DR Jose - I love your new(est) avatar!
-
I expect that skin problems Errol Flynn was having in Kim were the usual blotchy blemishes that accompany acute alcoholism. No one ever disintegrated from a paragon of male handsomeness to old man faster than Flynn. The last time he looked really good was Adventures of Don Juan. And even then you could see the beginnings of dissipation. By the time he died at 50, he looked 65.
-
In a basket or on a plate, DR RLP?
-
Sad sad sad, DRCP. I was thinking that some of the KIM problem might have been the false beard he had to wear....you know what that spirit gum can do to you day after day! It didn't seem to be a real beard, and in any case would have been dyed if it was - MORE PROBLEMS!
-
DR George - Sorry to hear you're feeling sore. Maybe the package I mailed to you today will cheer you up!

VERY nice changes in the b/w DR ARBUS...I mean DRJOSE. And yes a very introspective avatar!

DR Jose - I love your new(est) avatar!
So... Here's the long book scene... Oh! I have my digital camera with me... Let's turn the flash off... Set the self-timer... Put it on the end of the keyboard... 10-9-8... Stay really still... 3-2-1.. OK... Let's see how it turned out.

OK - I simply must hie myself off of this couch... Most unseemly to be sitting here on this couch for hours in a row when it's such a beautiful day outside..
-There is life outside my apartment....
Laters...

Jrand54, I believe it was a real beard and I believe it was dyed.
-
Same thing happened to Spencer Tracy with his alcoholism. He looked a good 10-15 years older than he was starting from about 1950 onward.
-
Jrand54, I believe it was a real beard and I believe it was dyed.
OUCH!!!! He has that reddish-blonde crew cut as well.....looks sort of like Eminem. :o

Yes, today is supposedly the last of our early summer days (high 81) for awhile, so I took a walk this morning and felt so great when I got back home. It was wonderful to breathe the fresh air. I enjoy my treadmill, but there's nothing like a mid-morning walk when it's not humid and most people are at work thus making the streets relatively empty.
-
I believe that LOST recap episode is next week (a week from tonight).
-
Larry, why do you think the keyboard key signatures in Pajama Game are so unseemly? I have never seen so many songs in an awkward assortment of 6 and 7 flats in my life (I'm playing from the conductor's score, which makes the double flats about next-to-impossible to read). I mean, I know the concert keys were probably chosen to fit the singers and to make it easy on the brass and wind players (who, after all, need it to be as easy as possible ;D), but why in heaven's name didn't they just enharmonicize (that's a word, isn't it?) the keyboard charts to something vaguely readable like, say, B major? :P
-
Of course, Tracy's looks never quite plummeted from the heights that Flynn's did.
-
I'M OUTTA CONTROL!!!!
::)
And this is new? ;D
-
DR CP just checked out some KIM photos online....not many available....and I think you are correct...it is a real beard - dyed!
Dean Stockwell was VERY good as the title character.
-
LOL DRCP.....yes poor Spencer certainly had quite a distance LESS to fall in the looks department .....Manuel notwithstanding. :P
-
Of course, Tracy's looks never quite plummeted from the heights that Flynn's did.
Well, he didn't have what Flynn had to start with, but he still looked much older than he actually was. In DESK SET, it's hard to believe him and Hepburn as a couple (despite what we know now) because he almost looks like her father. By the time of GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER, he DID look like her father and like Katharine Houghton's grandfather. (Admittedly, he was very ill at the time of its making.)
-
Dean Stockwell turned in some impressive performances as a child. I'm kind of surprised the Academy didn't bestow one of its miniature Oscars on him.

Well, there you've got me! I was going to suggest singer problems, but my memory of the OBC recording is that Janis Paige sings flat, so going up a step or down shouldn't have been a problem for her: she'd still be off. I always preferred the divine Doris Day.
Alex Rybeck, an arranger I'm very fond of, tends to go to sharp keys like E and B a lot, but I try to get the reeds and brass into flat keys. Some times however, you're stuck in F-sharp and there's no way out, although I'd rather go to G-flat
-
DRJMK - when I directed/choreographed THE PAJAMA GAME many years ago, I also found the Key Signatures in the score to be convoluted. The first time I handed it to the pianist she handed it back to me and said: "Who the &%*& wrote this?"
-
I think Janis' flats on the OBC are part of her charm.
-
DR vixmom - Song suggestion for your daughter: "I Know Now," from Snoopy.
-
I don't find Janis' flatting of the notes charming at all; it's cringe inducing for me. However, she was the star of MAME when I first saw it on Broadway, and I don't remember her singing that score badly at all.

At least the keyboard score is newly printed (at least the one we're using) and legible. I'm working off the conductor score, hand written (as they all were in those days--remember, Larry? ;)). Since I'm picking up manifold string, brass and wind parts throughout the score (all of which are written in teeny, tiny notes buried within the keyboard part), it gets to be hair-pulling time after a while. Plus they haven't gotten stand lights for us, so I'm squinting with these aging eyes. The good news (???) is the high school band is so chaotic that I'm going to sound like the Philadelphia Orchestra by comparison. ;D

Do they use BiC lighters in Hernando's Hideaway?
-
Lord, Reggie Miller is playing his last season home game tonight and from the coverage you would think the world was losing an important person.
-
OK, my predictions for tonight's IDOL bottom three:
Anwar, Anthony, and Constantine, with Anwar going home.

We have been told that we can no longer listen to Internet Radio stations at work...our Informations Systems section says it uses up to much bandwith...or rather it would, if all the employees were listening to Internet radio (of course the majority of employees would not know internet radio from a hole in the ground, but that is evidently beside the point)...so I brought a radio to work....sadly, reception here is pretty bad and I can only get two stations...Spanish language stations, both of them are, and I cannot understand a word they are saying.
-
I don't even know who Reggie Miller is...does he play on the same team as Howie Long?
-
Do they use BiC lighters in Hernando's Hideaway?
Last night was the first time we did it with complete sets and costumes. The costumes for this scene are incredible--they're all dressed up like beatniks and the color scheme is completely black and red. I was too busy trying to see the teeny, tiny notes (although Hernando is pretty easy, as I am just pizz strings in that one, LOL) to pay much attention to anything else.
-
I cannot understand a word they are saying.
Pretty much the same as Top 40. ;D
-
I packed up my laptop earlier this afternoon and sent it off to get fixed. I am currently borrowing a roomate's, but I just wanted you to know to not expect to hear much from me for the next few days. Please try to contain your excitement. ;)

Good vibes for DRJOEY's computer.
DRJMK - I hope we can see some Pajama Game photos online sooner or later! I love to see photos of different productions, and yours sounds like a winner.....or looks like a winner....whichever!

DR GINNY watch out for thunderstorms tonight....although they may be north of you. DRJOEY should be getting them soon.

Harumph! In my day, we never needed any of those new fangled summary episode thingies to watch Dynasty or Falcon Crest! We just watched it, and if you missed anything, tough noogies!
That's because the plot from episode to episode was always the same. Alexis would say "I'll have your noogies for this, Blake!" Krystal would say "Blake, no matter what, I'll always love you because of your noogies." Fallon would sigh "Jeff, I know you mean well, but your noogies just aren't enough for me." Blake would fume "Steven, I wish you would pay attention to your own noogies instead of the noogies of the next fellow." And Adam would say "Mother, let me prove to you that I've got the noogies."

Good Evening!
Back from my walk! Another great afternoon for a walk. I did my usual up and down Carytown route, but I did walk the aisles at Ukrop's and in the process picked up some Devil's Food Cupcakes with Chocolate Icing - and they were on sale too! Then I bought my winning lottery ticket for tonight's LottoSouth drawing and Friday's MegaMillions drawing. I forgot to buy my winning MegaMillions ticket yesterday which is why the jackpot is where it is right now. ;)
Then I went by Mary Angela's Pizza where I picked up an Italian Sub (ham, salami and provolone) and some potato chips. Both were very good. And the sandwich was wrapped in foil - since it was toasted - and then placed in a paper bag. The chips - Lay's Dill Pickle - came in their own bag.
-
...Well, I will give my roommate points for not minding to get his hands dirty. When I got back from my walk, he was out front pulling weeds out of the "garden". And he did a rather thorough job, and is contemplating on heading out tomorrow to Lowe's and getting some plants to set up an English garden. We shall see... But the garden does look better now.
-
....Must not eat all the Devil's Food Cupcakes...
:-X

Hey, Big Spender?

Oh... And I seem to be missing a loaf of bread that I bought Saturday. I stopped by Montana Gold Bread, and bought a loaf of "struan"- a great Scottish oat bread. When I got back to the apartment, I thought I had placed it on the kitchen table. Then I headed over to Steve's to help with his move. Well...
This morning, I finally remembered that I had bought the loaf - which I probably would have had to throw out today anyway since it was a fresh loaf with no preservatives. But when I went into the kitchen, the loaf was nowhere to be found. I asked my roomie about it, and he had no recollection of throwing anything out - on purpose or accidentally. I looked in my car, just in case, and it was not there. I looked in my bedroom, just in case, and it was not there either. So...
???
Have you seen my struan?

Hey, Big Spender?
Or even, "Dance: Ten. Looks: Three"
*Which, horror of horrors, I have seen performed by a 10(!!!!)-year old girl at an audition once. Complete with the internal monologue, choreography and "appropriate" hand gestures. We actually let her do the whole song since we weren't able to stop her due to the collective shock we were all in.

I had the same experience with a bowl of spaghetti last November. I still haven't found it.

For Ask BK/DR Day:
Has there even been a reference/word/plot-point/etc. that you read/saw/heard in a play/movie/tv-show that you didn't get the first time... But then years later, something just clicked in your mind, and it suddenly made sense after the fact?
-For myself, a lot of the phrases and references in the Montages in A Chorus Line did not make sense to me until a few years after I had already been listening to the LP almost religiously. With age comes wisdom.
-

Hmmm... Your bowl of spaghetti... My loaf of bread...
Who's missing a wedge of parmesan cheese? or bottle of Chianti?
-
I eat out at least once a week.
Uhmmmm, which things lost their shape?
:o :o :o :o :o

Well, if The Vixter needs a science experiment, her mom knows who to call.

Carlotta: Oh, my dear. That's something you need never worry about.

OK, my predictions for tonight's IDOL bottom three:
Anwar, Anthony, and Constantine, with Anwar going home.
I better squeeze this in now. My guesses for the bottom three:
Vonzell, Scott, and Anwar.
I also think Anwar will go home

Speaking of cheese...
"American Idol" just started...

Hi all!
Well, Tom, I thought about it and if I can have the beautiful birds that you have in your yard, I want to be “exiled” as well. :D
Right now, we have tons of lizards in our yard. It’s that time of year again. I even had one run up my pants leg the other day. Not a great feeling, I must say. Interesting but not great. It's a good thing I like the little beasties.
My lemon tree arrived today. I didn’t have time to put it into it’s new pot but I will try to do that tomorrow night. I will take a picture to share when I do. It’s very tiny. Just a twig, really and not very impressive.
I like to read cookbooks. I also love my cookbook software as well. The mini movies that show how to do this or that are very interesting.
I’m not into crime books. My favorites are mostly Sci-fi/Fantasy. I have read most of the books about Errol Flynn’s life. Some of them I enjoyed and some of them I thought were pure trash. I don’t think he was a Nazi.
I wish I could stay up and watch the Flynn movies that are on this month. They’re just on to late.
I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a Sergio Leone film or not. I don’t know who he is! (Gasp!)
I hope that you are feeling much better by now, DR George! Want to come move some furniture for me? ;)
Glad to hear that Peggy is doing well. Poor baby but it is for the best.
The pizza was good today but it gave me an upset tummy. :P Ahh well.
Sleepy time for me. Have good evening all.

This why I heard that My WHite Night was dropped from the film. Wilson and Loesser had a falling out and he refused permission for the song to be in the film and this is why Being In Love was written in its place.
-
Ask BK:
The Barry Manilow type songs that are the music of bruce kimmel cd are there long version of them?
-
My favorite movie without a villain, coincidentally is Sergio Leone's rarely screened THE GOOD, THE GOOD AND THE UGLY.
-
Nice tunnel photos, JoseS. They don't really give an idea just how long that tunnel is. Actually, the way they look you can tell people you were standing on the subway tracks.

I thought it was "on the record" that the main reason they replaced "My White Knight" was so that they would have a song eligible to be nominated for the Oscars that year since the rest of the score was pre-existing.

Thanks, DR Rodzinksi. Although, the credit must go to you since you were the photographer. I was just the subject.
:)

Spent a lovely few hours with Miss Juliana A. Hansen - we lunched and we had fun catching up. She took home her rehearsal CD and now I am back in Leoneland with For a Few Dollars More, which looks swell.

Holy moley on rye - page eight!
HABERDASHERY, baby, HABERDASHERY!

Well... "American Idol" is over...
That one "stunt" was truly mean!
But as for the final result...

Dean Stockwell gives a great young adult performance in the underrated SONS AND LOVERS.

You're right, I hadn't thought of that. Good job, me!

Hey BK- Here's a question:
Sometimes Fox Movie Channel shows films and the credits are letterboxed, then the movie begins and the movie then fills the whole screen. Why would this be?
-

I always assumed it was because the producers wanted an original ballad that could qualify for an Academy Award. It didn't get nominated, though.
Your version makes more sense.

"A.I." -- No Spoiler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AWESOME CHOICE, AMERICA!!!!!

I happened across just the beginning of IDOL. Forget the fact that Ryan Seacrest got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, that most dubious of "honors", but the tune written by John Farrar for the whole gang to sing was monumentally horrific, and I'm a John Farrar fan. It actually borrowed lines from Kelly Clarkson's "A Moment Like This". Can't someone write better songs for these kids to sing?

He was quite moving in "Long Day's Journey Into Night," too!

I just read on Playbill.com (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/92472.html) that Producers of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels Sow Seeds of Score by Giving Away 50,000 Cast Albums April 27-May 31!!
According to the article, From 11:30 AM-1 PM on April 27, the show's composer and complete cast will be autographing free copies of the new CD in front of the Imperial Theatre for anyone who stops by.
and:
The special CD will not include the booklet of the later CD, and will not have three bonus tracks expected on the commercial cast album.
Is there is anyone who will be in New York during this time who will be willing and able to pick up one for someone who lives in Olympia, Washington (namely, ME)?? I'd certainly pay for shipping, packaging, etc. I could trade something, I'm sure. Private replies, of course! ;)

Here's the cover art. Let's make it a belated Page 8 Dance!

DR elmore - Know anything about the various orchestrations for Damn Yankees? The original, the movie, the revival? Huh?
;)

They show the credits letterboxed because there is no way to pan-and-scan them like the rest of the film. It's a shame they don't retire all these old pan-and-scan masters.
-
Comcast.net has already announced who lost tonight...and it was posted 31 minutes ago! Not that I watch at all, but that's not right.
-
DRGEORGE when we went to see STOMP and sat in the third row, all the sweeping and stomping sent so much dust flying into the air, I was coughing and sneezing - and I wasn't the only one.
-

I guess that's why sometimes, like in SKI PARTY years ago, when the credits were full screen, all the actors behind the words were tall and skinny like pencils. ;D
-
I certainly had no problem with the person who went home tonight on IDOL. Has never been one of my favorites and thought this singer was given way too much credit for mediocre or worse performances.
Didn't think the countdown to elimination was mean at all. They did it in three groups of three last season with the top 9 finishers. I LOVED that. Helped really put the popularity of the singers into a vivid perspective.
-
I have never heard that "Being in Love" was added to THE MUSIC MAN to garner an Oscar nomination. Only half the song is new anyway.
And it didn't happen that new songs added to old Broadway scores got nominations until the new title song in FUNNY GIRL got nominated. Had it ever happened prior to 1968?
-
I finished the last 40 minutes of THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX today, and there is one close-up of Flynn that is so badly out of registration that I thought my eyesight was going bad.
DVD really does show up transfer problems in VERY clear fashion.
-
EYES continues to be surprising and fun. I just wish more folks were watching it. At this rate, I can't ABC renewing it (or BLIND JUSTICE, but I don't watch it).
-
BK, what do you know about the restored Major Dundee with its extra twelve minutes of footage?
-
Cary Grant and Ginger Rogers in Monkey Business.
Peeee-whew! What a stinker!
-
No posts in over an hour?
SKAMMEN!
-
Restored MAJOR DUNDEE? I am there!
-
Must be the pretzels.
-
DtM - Marilyn has a couple of good moments, but Ginger is just too much! And it's one of my least favorite Cary Grant movies - almost a parody of himself.
-
HABERDASHERY!
-
What do you want to know about it? I know everything about it. I was invited to a screening last week but couldn't go, so I'm going to trek over to the Nuart if I have a chance. They put back a lot of cut stuff (according to the cutting continuity script) and they had the film rescored by a new composer, who, my friend Nick tells me, did a great job in making it sound like a true Peckinpah film. The Amfitheatrof score has always grated. Nick says the added footage still doesn't make it a great film, but it does make it a better film.
-
And to answer an earlier question, at this point I have no idea if there will be a common theme between the short stories. I tend to think not, but you never know about these things - certainly it won't be conscious, but I will say there is a slight fantasy element to the two stories I've done. Not major, but ever so slight. But, if you'd asked me when I began the Kritzer saga if the theme of all three books would turn out to be the same thing, I wouldn't have had a clew that the common theme between them is loss.
-

New songs integrated into the movie versions of Broadway shows that garnered Oscar nominations:
1935 -- "Lovely to Look At" from "Roberta"
1937 -- "Whispers in the Dark" from "Artists and Models"
1941 -- "The Last Time I Saw Paris" from "Lady Be Good"
1943 -- "Happiness is a Thing Called Joe" from "Cabin in the Sky"
1947 -- "Pass That Peace Pipe" from "Good News"

I think it's FUN! :-*

We first saw DUNDEE on a double bill - and it was the second feature. We just hung around for a bit to see what it was like - but we were hooked in the first five minutes. Always seemed a bit chopped up - but I didn't know anything about cutting a movie in 1965.
What were the cuts, and were they made for time or content?
-
DRJOSE did you win the Powerball tonight?

"No musical numbers, no comics, and no bathing suits."
"But with a little sex in it."

DRJOSE did you win the Powerball tonight?
Oohhh.. I have to check.
*and it was Lotto South tonight - drawings of Wednesday and Saturday.
Powerball doesn't run here in Virginia. We're in MegaMillions country here. Drawings Tuesday and Friday.

I bet DR MBarnum would love to go to a PAUL HABER-DASHERY!
;D
-Remember the rule!

DUNDEE was taken away from Peckinpah in post and editing and he claimed ruined. He also claimed it would have been his best film. The studio actually tried to either shut the movie down or take Peckinpah off it during shooting, except that Charlton Heston offered to give back his salary to keep it going with Peckinpah. The studio took him up on the offer.

VIXMOM-some song suggestions for the Vixter:
BORN TO ENTERTAIN from Ruthless!
IN-BETWEEN, made famous by Judy Garland
SOON AS I GET HOME from The Wiz
COLORS OF THE WIND
I'll send ya more when I think of them.

Peckinpah is notorious for saying all his films were ruined in one way or another - that was his thing. With Ride the High Country he claimed he wasn't allowed to edit it, and also that the score was terrible. Well, it's well-edited and I'm rather fond of the score, and the film is one of his best. He originally told Jerry Fielding that he thought his score to The Wild Bunch had ruined the film. He later recanted, when he realized how stupid he was being. According to Nick, even with the put back scenes, even with the new score, Major Dundee is still problematic. It's better, but that doesn't suddenly make it a great film.
