Title: THE DAYS OF OUR LIVES

Well, you've read the notes (and that includes you, new registered users), you know the story of the days, you know what Urinetown is not, and you know the topic of the day, so I do believe it's time to post until the cows come home.

Good Eveni..

Well...

Good Morning!!

-I missed yesterday evening due to various reasons - which, if I may, I shall recount for you now...

I got back into Richmond around 7:45 - made great time back from DC even after having to deal with a major backup caused by a semi-major accident - however, it looked liked everyone was all right when I passed by the scene.

I had called my friend, Mark, to see if he wanted to grab dinner and/or a drink once I got back into town.  Well, he called me back to tell me that he was already having a few cocktails at a bar.. and that the bar had some special "entertainers" there tonight... So... After a beer, and some not so special entertainment, I headed back out to get some dinner.

Dinner: Fried Chicken Livers and Fried Rice!! Love 'em.  -I know, I know, some of you are going, "eeewwwwwww" right now... Ah, well...

-And after eating my dinner, I did pop into chat for a few precious minutes...

And then I tended to the leak in the kitchen.  The water situation is not bad, but I have a feeling the wall and ceiling situation could be very bad.  This is the second type of leak like this in the past three years.  They were working on the A/C unit for the upstairs unit, and, apparently - again(!) - they did not adjust the condensation collector properly... So, the run off is running down to our kitchen.  There are some "stalactites" in the ceiling drip, drip, dripping away... and the walls around the stove(!!!) are all wavy from having water behind the latex paint.  We'll see what the contractor says in the morning...  actually, in a few hours...

Well, since it was the end of my work week, I still felt like going out...  So, after another phone call to and from Mark, we went over to another bar.  And at this bar, Sunday night is karaoke night - or "scare-aoke" as the locals call it.  Unfortunately, it was truly scary tonight.  I almost wanted to get up and sing just to hear a few in tune notes tonight, but I didn't have that many beers ;) - even though Mark kept pushing the song listing binder in front of me.  -Maybe next time.. yeah, right...

So, I got back to the apartment around 12:30AM...  Why, oh why did I stay that long?  I kept hoping to hear one good singer, but...  ah, well... It got me out of the house for a while, and it was nice to be social.

For the past few hours, I've been chatting with friends, going through my mail, watching some things via On Demand (caught up on "Queer As Folk" - very interesting developments the past two episodes), et.c, etc, etc...

And now...

-If you can't tell, I'm surprisingly wired right now - ???  Maybe it's time for a good ole-fashioned all-nighter - I haven't done one in a few months.

DR Danise - Have a great time in the Big Apple!  I wish I could be there tomorrow too to meet you and dine with you.  -And who was at Joe's Pub tonight?

*Oh, but I did find out tonight that it looks like I'll be going to the Tonys!!!  -Keep your proverbial fingers and toes crossed for me.

DR SWW - I really like Kitchen Collection stores.  -And, yes, their customer service could use some improvement, but I think that's just the nature of the retail business no matter what the stores sell.  *I just wish they would carry the cheaper - and better - ice cream/cookie dough/etc. scoops - the generic ones you can find at a restaurant supply stores.  I can't always get to a restaurant supply store when I'm in need - and I've actually been in need of a scoop one or two more times than I'd like to admit to - but $12.00-20.00 is a bit high for a small scooper.  -And most of the time, they're only labeled "small, medium or large", rather than by the ounce size or the serving size (which is based on how many portions you can get out of a gallon, quart??? I forget).  But you can't beat the deals you can get on Pyrex there! :)

Topics of the Day:

Weill Songs:
"September Song" - I remember playing this one over and over again from an issue of Sheet Music Magazine!
"My Ship"
"The Saga of Jenny" - Especially Dawn Upshaw's rendition

Rain Songs:
Well, The "Rain Song" from 110 in the Shade
"Soon It's Gonna Rain" - Mainly because there's an actor I've played this for countless times at various auditions... he has a great bit he does... and I actually get to be a part of it!
"Here's That Rainy Day" - Wasn't/isn't this Johnny Carson's favorite song?
"Stranger To The Rain" - Well, I am playing Children of Eden right now, so...
"Rainy Days and Mondays" - Gotta love The Carpenters
Anything from the Umbrellas of Cherbourg ;-)
"Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" - This song was played a lot when I was growing up - either on the record player, or me picking it out from the Reader's Digest Songbook.
"MacArthur Park" - Yes, that's a s-t-r-e-t-c-h....
"Rain" from Once On This Island

I'll probably have a few more later today in both categories...

In the meantime, I think I'm gonna go lay down in my bed and see if I fall asleep...  Hmmm...

WOW!  That was a long post!!!

Esteemed BK - I'm sorry Urinetown was not your cup of pee, but at least you got to see Ms. Noll and catch up with her.  It is one of those shows that either really gets to someone, or leaves them totally cold.  For myself, I actually liked the experience in the theatre, but I don't find myself reaching for the OCR all that often.  *And I can't imagine the show playing in some of the "barns" it's been booked into on the road.  The whole fantasy of it being an epic of sorts can literally get lost in a large space.  It's too bad Spencer Kayden didn't go on the road too after the Broadway production shuttered.  Truly a wonderful and unique performance.

Oohhhh.. I just realized that since I'm up so early right now, I can go over to this great little diner nearby which has incredible breakfasts!  They're the "cafeteria" for the dairy processing plant it's attached too.  Great biscuits!  And because it's part of a dairy, they also have great milkshakes and ice cream too!  oohh....

Well, time to attempt to do something or other....

Good morning, all!  I'm still feeling the effects of too-much wine and the pressure of finishing up deadlines before Goodsped is settling in.  However, I'm never too tired or stressed to discuss Kurt Weill songs, which I'll divide into two categories European and American, since those were the two musically different periods of his career:

EUROPEAN
THREEPENNY OPERA:  Barbara Song, Mack the Knife, Pirate Jenny
HAPPY END:  Surabaya Johnny, Mandalay Song, Bilbao Song
MAHAGONNY:  Havanna-Lied,  As You Make Your Bed
MARIE GALANTE:  I Wait for a Ship
SILBERSEE:  Fennimore's Song

AMERICAN
JOHNNY JOHNSON:  O Heart of Love
KNICKERBOCKER HOLIDAY:  September Song, It Never Was You
LADY IN THE DARK:  One Life to Live, Saga of Jenny, Tchaikovsky
ONE TOUCH OF VENUS:  I'm a Stranger Here Myself, Speak Low
STREET SCENE:  Wouldn't You Like to Be On Broadway?, Remember That I Care
LOVE LIFE:  Here I'll Stay, Economics, Greenup Time
LOST IN THE STARS:  Stay Well, Lost in the Stars

There's a new complete BBC recording of THE FIREBRAND OF FLORENCE, of which all I really know is "Sing Me Not a Ballad," but I look forward to hearing the rest of the score.

My favorite Weill song, since hardly anyone will know this, is a bit of political commentary from Act Two of KNICKERBOCKER HOLIDAY, "The Ballad of the Robbers," a fable about how the first honest men devised a system to keep bad guys out of society, until one day the robbers realized they were more plentiful, and now it's the honest men who sit in jail.  In the show, it's about the "hero" incarcerated by the fascist governor.  Still works for me.

RAIN SONGS:  Baby, the Rain Must Fall, Soon it's Gonna Rain, Here's That Rainy Day, If the Rain's gonna Fall, Isn't This a Lovely Day to be Caught in the Rain?

BK's reaction to Urinetown was exactly as I'd predicted.

I saw it in a small theatre and you could hear a pin drop after most of the jokes.  An SNL sketch expanded to gargantuan length.

Jason - never said you'd said anything bad about your friend.  We agree, and I wanted to add my note of admiration for all who toil on new musicals.

There's so much Weill I love...

Instead-Of Song, Tango-Ballad, Pirate Jenny, Call From the Grave, Barbara Song, Ballad of Sexual Dependancy, Jealousy Duet, and a tune that has thrilled audience for the past umteen years on Broadway: Ballad of the Easy Life (with a new lyric by the soulless Charles Hart, and a disco beat, for some reason).

And that's just 3Penny Opera.

Other Weill: Surabaya Johnny, a really fast one from Happy End I can't recall the name of, Eating (2 calves never made a man fatter...), The Soldier's Wife, Buddy on the Night Shift, It Never Was You, One Life To Live, The Saga of Jenny, My Ship, A Little Gray House, Stay Well, Lonely House, Wouldn't You Like To Be on Broadway?, Somehow I Never Could Believe, Lullaby (about the murder in the neighborhood), The Nina the Pinta the Santa Maria, The Trouble with Women, I'm a Stranger Here Myself, That's How I Love You

and I'm probably leaving out some!

What can you do on a rainy afternoon?
What can we two do on a rainy afternoon?
Give me a raincheck on that walk through the park:
There'd be mud and puddles on the courts.
But still I must see you;
I won't give that up come hell or high water
I'll be with you on this rainy afternoon.
I see such beauty on a rainy afternoon.
Does it put you in the mind of Noah's ark
Where each pair of animals - all different sorts
Nuzzled together to keep warm
Through forty afternoons of storm
Cuddle with me on a rainy afternoon.
Though the skies
May be dark
There's a light
In your eyes
and that light seems to say
There are indoor sports we could play.
As the rain beats a pattern on the win-
Dow pane my fingers will dance upon your skin.
We're staying in.
That's what we'll do on a rainy afternoon.

Oh my...Kurt Weill....probably those already mentioned that include "My Ship", "Saga of Jenny", "Bilbao", "September Song", and a song that I really learned to love when I did THE THREEPENNY OPERA, "Pirate Jenny"....that'll learn ya, that'll learn ya!

I was just sent an article about the FDA cracking down on gay men as sperm donors, which bent me out of joint.  I don't know the range of limitations, but the justification for the decision is to prevent the spread of diseases, but I suspect it's more to do with keeping Dubya's voters voting via another bit of homosexual panic propaganda.

I wish they'd make a ruling on doing the same for members of the religious right  and the other ultraconservative factions to which this current administration caters, just to prevent the spread of idiocy.

DR Elmore, I can't join you and Danise on Tuesday. Thanks for the offer, though. Hope to get together with you and DR Jane when she's in the City in October (I believe it's October).

Oh, so many songs already mentioned but I'll mention them again.

I love Surabaya Johnny, Mandalay Song (although when we did a production of Happy End at university someone started calling it Sort of Boring Johnny and now I have trouble hearing it without thinking of those lyrics). Others that I love include

It Never Was You, The Saga of Jenny,  I'm a Stranger Here Myself, Stay Well (done by the sublime Miss Dawn Upshaw on her Sondheim, Bernstein and Weill album), and Lost in the Stars (that song can make me tear up).

Many of my rain songs have been mentioned as well, and it's only 8:30 am.

Here's that Rainy Day
Come in From the Rain
Soon It's Gonna Rain

I shall now move over to the Radio portion of this here site and listen to Donald's sparkling new show.

Fav Kurt Weill songs: "Speak Low", "Lost in the Stars", and just about the entire score of Happy End (I wish I had seen the '76 B'way version--would have loved to have seen that cast!)

Rain song (not yet mentioned):  "Here Comes the Rain Again" by The Eurythmics.

On Weill:  Thank you DR Elmore....I couldn't come up with the aria from MAHAGONNY, but you nailed it:  "As You Make Your Bed."  (Saw MAHAGONNY years ago at the Met, and that particular aria has always haunted me.  Not enough to go out and buy a CD (or even a TV), but it has always haunted me.  And either "Speak Low" or "That's Him."

On rain:  Most of my faves already mentioned:  "Here's that Rainy Day," "Don't Rain on My Parade," "It's Raining Men," "Soon it's Gonna Rain," (especially with the brief monologue that precedes it on the OCR).

On Dasher. On Dancer.....

Another not yet mentioned song: I Made It Through The Rain by Mr. Barry Manilow.

I won't contribute to the Weill discussion today because the only Weill songs I know have all been mentioned already. I'm sure I'll be lynched for saying this, but I'm not a big fan of Mr. Weill's stuff...doesn't do it for me for some reason. I love Marc Blitzstein, but Kurt Weill--not so much. Don't know why, but that's what makes horse racing.

BK: Sorry URINETOWN didn't do it for you. I'm glad you didn't totally hate it, but I'm sorry it didn't click with you. I was fortunate enough to see it in the teeny tiny Henry Miller's on Broadway and the night I saw it, the audience was howling with laughter and merriment and mirth. When I heard the show was going out on tour, I feared that they'd book it in the same houses that shows like PHANTOM and LES MIZ have played. It's entirely too small for those gargantuan houses. I saw THE WORLD GOES ROUND in a 2,500-seat house. NOT A GOOD IDEA! The show is great, but it felt way out of place, as I'm sure URINETOWN did yesterday.

I love the whole score to LADY IN THE DARK except "Princess of Pure Delight"; I like everything I've heard from ONE TOUCH OF VENUS and wonder how much longer it will take John Yap to release his recording of the complete score (with Melissa Errico and Brent Barrett) recorded several years ago.  That said, I find most other American Weill scores consist of one or two good songs surrounded by less interesting material (with "It Never Was You" my favorite song from all his shows) and I find all Weill German scores sounding alike and interchangable.

I enjoyed URINETOWN both times I saw it though I wouldn't classify it as one of my all-time favorites.  The problem with "the road" is that most shows from Broadway play in theatres two or three times larger than where they played on Broadway and are usually lost in these large houses.  And off-Broadway shows are not exempt.  The first time I ever saw THE FANTASTICKS (back in the early 60s) it was in a theatre that sat about 1000 (10 times larger than NY's Sullivan Street Theatre where it played 40 years).  I wondered what all the fuss was about.  When I eventually saw it in NY in its original "home" I finally knew.  And in the opposite direction, I really enjoyed CITY OF ANGELS in New York, but when I later saw a touring company in Chicago in a 3000 seat theatre originally built for Grand Opera it was grossly over amplified to reach the back of the top balcony and even from the tenth row of the main floor was lost on the giant stage.  My friend who had not seen it in NY wondered why I had liked it so much in the first place, not realizing that it was like a completely different show.

Thanks to all for their welcomes.

As far as Weill is concerned, I enjoy his "Tchaikovsky" (sp?).  As far as rain songs are concerned, "Singin' in the Rain" is a fav.  And who doesn't enjoy belting out "The Rain in Spain" once in a while?

Yesterday I learned never to go to the gym, swim for thirty minutes and then try to perform the "Waiter's Gallop" a few hours later.

Today I'm (and a few cast mates) off to Chicago to catch a performance on ANYONE CAN WHISTLE.  I think it's a final preview and it officially opens tomorrow,... again, I think.  I've never seen it, and since it's done so rarely, I thought I should seize the opportunity.  I'm sure the seven of us going will all have different opinions.  I will he happy to share mine with you dear readers upon my return.

Enjoy your day!

I would venture to say you shouldn't do ANYTHING and then try to do the "Waiter's Gallop." There again, I'm no dancer, so I wouldn't be doing the Gallop in any case.

Happy Victoria Day/Dollard-des-Ormeaux Day/Fête des Patriotes!!!

Why call a holiday only one name when you can add a title based on the current government's political leanings? Whatever... if I have to celebrate/memorialize Queen Victoria's Birthday or the massacre of French settlers by native Canadians or the burning of rebels in a church in 1837 for a day off of work and school, so be it ;)

Vibe Request:

Last night my grandmother, who lives with us, had to be taken to the emergency department of our local hospital because she was having some difficulty breathing.  The diagnosis so far is that it is just the result of over-exertion (she's 87 years old and is out of the house, walking or taking public transport, just about every day).  So, please send vibes to her to make a quick recovery and that it is just her doing too much after a long winter.

George, re your comments on ages in Company, yesterday's posts.

The script doesn't really say how old everyone is, other than Robert being 35 and the others being his contemporaries, or thereabouts.  So Elaine was six years older than Dean?  No biggie.  Barbara Barrie was five years older than Charles Kimbrough, and they played husband and wife...or, in their cases, wife and husband.

There's nothing in the script that says Joanne has to be older than Robert.  Heck, in college, opposite Robert Westenberg, I saw Joanne played by a sophomore.  Named Bunny.  Knocked 'em out of their seats every performance.

Now, I'd be bothered by a Joanne who was obviously in her sixties coming on to a 35-year-old Robert.  But, within reason, I say cast whoever is best for the roles.  Most audiences are intelligent enough to work these things out for themselves.

(And I still would like to see Judith Light tackle Robert...uh, play the character of Robert.  Well, the other way might work, too... ;))

SWW, sweet corn at this time of year!  That got Keith’s attention.  Is it grown locally?

Dan (the man) I do remember Jersey and Bucks County, PA corn.  I also remember the wonderful Cortland apples in the same areas.

To me sweet corn tastes best plain.

I’m with Jay on the out list for potato salad.  His in list sounds good though I have never had the egg mashed, or used olives and carrots.  Finely chopped celery and onions is important.  For me the mayo must be Best Foods or Hellmann’s and not the diet stuff.  I enjoy a good red potato salad.  To repeat Jay-NO PICKLES   .

George my older son doesn’t like celery either.

SWW what chocolate chips do you put in your cookies?  While in LA Keith’s aunt made meringue chocolate chip cookies with Ghirardelli double chocolate chips which I couldn’t stop eating.

Weill Songs:

"Mack The Knife"
"September Song" ( I would never have included this one, had I not sung it in the recent Gala.  I now realize how meaningful those lyrics are at my age)

Rain Songs:

"Come Rain or Come Shine"
"Soon It's Gonna Rain"
"I Made It Through the Rain"

BK, Satureday?

FAVORITE KURT WEILL SONGS:
Economics
I Am a Stranger Here Myself
Mack the Knife (the library I work for has a newly released CD of Die Dreigroschenoper (http://www.castalbumdb.com/rec.cfm?RNumber=3825) recorded in Berlin in the late 1920s and early 1930s, which includes a recording of Bertolt Brecht himself singing “Mack the Knife” in German.)
The Saga of Jenny

FAVORITE RAIN SONGS:
Come Rain or Come Shine
Don't Rain On My Parade
Here Comes the Rain Again
I Made It Through The Rain
It's Raining Men
Raining In My Heart
Singin’ in the Rain
Soon It's Gonna Rain
Stranger To The Rain (from C.O.E.--I love this song)
and what’s that song from the late 70s or early 80s with the lines,
Oh no, it’s raining again
Oh no, my love's at an end....
I can’t even remember who sang it.  Any hints?

Bruce I wish I could go with you today.

Moi, aussi. It should be a grand evening. I'm going to be doing something not quite as humorous. I'll be on a panel of screenwriters at UCLA talking to young filmmakers about what it is that we do (like I knew!). I always enjoy this kind of thing because it actually makes me think a little about the "process" of what I do for a living. And seeing all these younger types dying to do what I do (hah!) - makes me feel lucky for a minute or two to be where I am in life. Then the minute passes. But it's a good minute.

Weill songs:

September Song
What Good Would the Moon Be?
Lonely House
We'll Go Away Together
(yup, did Street Scene my first NYCO season...)
My Ship
TroubleMan
and, just cuz it was so fun to sing every night: Salesgirls Duet from SILBERSEE

Rain songs (and, yes, intermittant rain up here, what a surprise...)

April Showers
Soon It's Gonna Rain
Here's That Rainy Day
Look For That Silver Lining (not exactly "rain", but close...)
Singin' in the Rain

Now I'm scrambling to get the music scores for Washington's Wedding ready for the actors, before I leave for NYC on Saturday morn. The drudgery of it - ah, well, certainly worth it. Catch y'all later...

Wow! a patch of blue sky just appeared... what's all that light???

Well, let me first do a quick greet to all... Hi, all! I'm an old-timer from some of Bruce's old hangouts, and am making my grand return to the Haines/Kimmel community with this here post...

All of my fave Weill songs have already been mentioned, but I didn't see two of my fave "rain" songs: "When the Rain Comes" (Andrea Burns's song on the Broadway Bound album), and a number called "Let the Rain Come Down" by Lori Lieberman.

Anyhow, finally glad to get my virgin post over with (was it good for you, too?) and looking forward to much further banter and discussion.

"Shakalaka Santa"--A First Draft

Shakalaka Santa, Shakalaka Santa

Saw your sleigh, saw the damage was done
Saw when it fell, when the toys fell over.
A rounder man there never was one
You weigh too much and the thing tipped over!

(Woah-ho-ho)
The reigndeer are colliding
(Woah-ho-ho)
The Barbie dolls are flying
(Woah-ho-ho!)
Simply no denying
That you are a ball of blu-hu-hu-hu-hu-hu-bber...!

Shakalaka Santa
Shakalaka Santa
Eating piles of chocolate filled with cream...
Shakalaka Santa
Shakalaka Santa
This must be some nightmare Christmas dream.
Shakalaka Santa
Shakalaka Santa
Who'll put presents underneath my tree?
Shakalaka Santa
Shakalaka Santa
Won't you start a diet with me?

(No, no, no, no, no, no, no--ho, ho ho!
No, no, no, no, no, no, no--ho, ho, ho!
No, no, no, no, no, no, no--ho, ho, ho!
No, no, no, no, no, no, no--ho, ho, ho!)

It's rough--but it's a start.

I believe that I said it before, but I would like to reiterate what a pleasure it is to have DR Jason back with us.  You were truly missed, my friend.

Panni -- It is certainly not young people alone who are envious of you, and all of the others here at HHW, who work professionally in your chosen crafts.  What a great thrill it must be to earn your living doing what you love to do.  I have been incredibly fortunate to be able to play the roles that I have played during my lifetime, but to be able to earn my living as an artist would be, to me, the ultimate joy.

Here's an interesting insight into why the Bollywood musical might actually run for a while on Broadway, and not just because of the Indian audiences... There is a man I see in the park every morning. I don't know his name - I know him as the owner of Lucy, a chocolate lab who is Abie's girlfriend (platonic!). This man and his wife just came back from NY - his first time. He is in his forties, a manufacturer of nuts and other condiments, not at all a theater person. I asked him if they saw any plays while in NY. He answered that they didn't have time- but there was one thing he would loved to have seen, "That Indian musical..."
Not exactly a scientific survey, but I rest my case.

SWW, sweet corn at this time of year!  That got Keith’s attention.  Is it grown locally?
As far as I can tell, it's very local.  Nice to be in a mostly rural area!

For me the mayo must be Best Foods or Hellmann’s and not the diet stuff.  I enjoy a good red potato salad.
What, you don't make your own mayo?   ;D

SWW what chocolate chips do you put in your cookies?
Ghirardelli.  They're better than Nestle's, IMO, and cost less.  I buy the big bags at Sam's Club.  I also add a T cocoa powder to the basic Tollhouse recipe, along with a little cinnamon and a couple T molasses.

Hi all!

Just wanted to touch base.  I found a cyber cafe right across the street from the hotel with a much better computer.  I was on the free one in the visitors center yesterday and only had 10 minutes.

Elmore was kind enough to call me last night.  It was good to hear a friendly voice.

NYC isn't what I thought it would be.  I guess I am a very country mouse after all.  I'm glad I've seen it but I won't be sorry to leave.  It's to busy, to dirty and smells bad.

They tried to put me in one of the small rooms at the hotel but I asked for something different and got 2  twin size beds instead!  Not much of a trade up.  At least the new bathroom has a tub--the first only had a shower!

I guess I was spoiled by the BW in Utah.  That was a very nice room with a large bathroom and two double beds.

Gotta run.  Will post again in a day or two...

Good Morni...  Well...

Good Afternoon!

After listening to the first hour or so of NPR's Morning Edition, I believe I drifted off to sleep sometime around 6:15-ish...  I woke up around 9:30, but finally got out of bed around 12:30  - which is practically my normal wake up time anyway lately, so...

DR PennyO - Thank you for reminding me about Street Scene.  I sang Mr. Maurrant in Opera Workshop (a.k.a. OpShop) when I was in college.  The part actually is a little low for me (well, my voice), but I had a great time since the character is so not me, very much the opposite.  People even giggled after my entrance line of "It's a hell of a day..." (or something with "hell" in it)...  I'm not a mean person, I'm not an angry person.  As Jon Lovitz's Master Thespian would say, "ACTing!!"

DR Stuart, MAHAGONNY to me is the great Twentieth Century opera!  If you don't  have the Teresa Stratas Kurt Weill album, she does a great job of it in German, "Denn wie man sich bettet," as well as some beautiful things from MARIE GALANTE besides "J'attends un navire," like "Le Roi d'Aquitaine."  You might like it.

I understand that the theatre at which Urinetown played in New York seats 630 patrons.  The Wilshire Theatre, where it played here in Lalaland, seats 1910, more than three times as many.

Apropos to nothing that's been mentioned (which makes this comment a non sequitur--a first for this site..........not!), like a good number of legit theatres in the L.A. area, the Wilshire, which is controlled by the Nederlander organization, sits unused a good deal of the time.

In no particular order, I'm an aspiring master's student in chemistry, a Sondheim fanatic (yes, I know, who isn't?), a piano bar devotee with a strong penchant for Tom Lehrer songs, a lab technician for ConEd, and husband to a fellow theatre nut who has somehow managed to overlook her spouse's idiosyncrasies and meshuggas for the past three+ years.

I meant to post this yesterday and then forgot.  In yesterday's New York Times Arts and Leisure on one page there was an ad for an Audra McDonald concert at Lincoln Center this week.  On another page there was an ad for an Audra McDonald concert at Carnegie Hall next week.  And on a third page there was an ad for Audra McDonald in A RAISIN IN THE SUN playing eight times a week this week and next week (and beyond).  Ms. McDonald is excellent in RAISIN (and also Tony nominated).  Is it fair for audiences to see her understudy just so she can make concert appearances.  And is it fair to continue featuring her name in the ads when it is known that she will not be appearing regularly for at least the next two weeks?  Does the Equity contract require so many "vacation days"  for a show with a limited 11-week run?  If her concert appearances were previously arranged didn't she have an "out" clause where she could reschedule them after RAISIN's limited run.  Ms. McDonald is one of the most talented performers on Broadway today, but her unwillingness to commit to every performance of a play (health willing) for such a limited run is a disgrace.  I realize that she is not the only one of the current Broadway performers to take off on a regular basis, but these ads coming page after page certainly make it the most blatent display of clack of ommitment I can ever recall having seen.  Are people who buy tickets for RAISIN at least informed of this?

I don't know how Ms. McDonald's contract is structured, but I suspect that she had her concert obligations well before her "Raisin" run (and that the producers were aware of them). Rescheduling a concert would probably not be feasible (her co-performers have other commitments too!).

As to how fair this is: well, it's unfortunately part of what it takes to get a star. I can't imagine that Audra's getting big bucks for "Raisin" (esp. considering her co-stars with bigger name appeal), and often the only way to nab a star of that caliber is to accomodate other commitments. Irish Rep had a similar problem with their production of "Finian's Rainbow," where Melissa Errico had to cut out before the run (actually, I think she might have finished the original planned length, and just left before the extension). I don't know that the people coming to see "Raisin" are primarily motivated by Audra's performance, but I would imagine that, since her name is above the title, theatergoers could transfer tickets for another performance if they wanted.

Ideal? No, but your alternative is for Audra to cancel or reschedule a concert commitment (which I would imagine carries a very high cost), or for "Raisin" to have a lesser cast. The producers of "Raisin" (again, going on the assumption that they knew of her schedule beforehand) decided that having Audra on for most performances was better than someone else going on for all of them.

I must be off to do errand in Medford.  Not my favorite place to go, but I do need things for my big trip coming up next month.  I’m looking for a dual voltage flatiron for my hair.  If I can’t find one today I will have to order something online.  Keith just ordered a new digital camera that is about the size of a deck of cards.  I think I’m beginning to get excited now.    :)

I don’t have time to list my favorite songs but I’m sure they have all been named by now.

We returned a little while ago from a long (Victoria Day) weekend in tornado territory. (Yesterday, two tornados touched down outside Stratford, Ont.)

I just finished catching up on three days of posts (reading them in order). Welcome and Welcome Back to our New Faces.

Speacking of New Faces ('52), I've always liked "It's Raining Memories." Other rain-song favorites include "Right as the Rain" (Bloomer Girl), "Don't Rain on My Parade" (Funny Girl), and (a stretch?) "I've Got a Rainbow Working for Me" (Darling of the Day).

Kurt Weill songs? There are so many wonderful ones, among them, Surabaya Johnny, Mack the Knife, A Stranger Here Myself, The Alabama Song, Lost in the Stars, and September Song.

Best of health vibes to DR Emily's grandmother.

(DR Panni - I just sent you an e-mail.)

What I find most upsetting is that the producers of RAISIN are still advertising her.  They should have a line in the display ad stating "Audra McDonald will not be appearing on this date and this date".  I have seen that done occasionally (all initial LaMANCHA revisal ads listed the dates that Stokes had prior commitments) but it seems to be the exception rather than the rule.  This is known as "truth in advertising", and to advertise a star as appearing in a show for performances when it is known that he or she will not be appearing is really not the truth.

What a remarkable event has unfolded in Juliana's Journal.

I have to shed a tear for the vagaries, politics, and unfairness of the business called show.

But congratulations to Juliana for her attitude and her generosity in sharing ALL of her experiences with us...ALL of them.

Brava!

Ignore the Juliana's Journel link.  Got to the main page of HHW http://www.haineshisway.com/community/ and go to the big heading below the Daily Discussions.  That is where you will find the current entries of Juliana Journal.

There was math involved in that movie???

Well... One plus One... plus a hot day... plus no A/C....

Unfortunately, all shirts stayed on here today...  Ah, well... ;)

Also, unfortunately, it now looks like part of the kitchen ceiling is starting to cave in.. well, more like fall out.  Initially, you could tell that the latex paint was holding everything in - like a bra for lack of a better mental picture - but as the hours have gone by, you can - well, I can and the repair man - see that the dry wall has actually "fallen" and is being held up in place by the latex paint.

He "thinks" he fixed the problem with the A/C, but since he doesn't deal with structural stuff, he's not really sure just how much longer the ceiling will be saggin, leaking and dripping.  He also said there could be anywhere from 1 to 20 gallons up there right now.  We were presented with the option of going ahead and opening up a larger hole so that everything could drain, but if there happens to be a LOT of water up, that course of action would not be a good thing.  But, then, of course, that part of the ceiling could end up falling in sometime sooner... or later..  UGH!... Ah, well...

I did get out for lunch with my friend Mike.  We headed over to Great Wraps - good, but just good.  Then I walked him over to the French bakery across the street which he hadn't been to before.  He had an "alummette" - puff pastry, vanilla pastry cream, strawberries and almonds; and I had a slice of the very decadent Opera cake - chocolate, chocolate, chocolate!!! -And then I got a few almond macaroons to go.  :P

I liked Urinetown quite a bit.  It ain't gonna be one of my favorite musicals, but I can appreciate the Weill-ness and Brecht-ness of it all.  And it actually has some terrific songs, like "Mr. Cladwell", "Cop Song" and...well, OK...it has two terrific songs.

And I think that a terrific cast can save a weak show.  I saw a production of Merrily We Roll Along that was almost terrific.  If it'd been a better show, it would've been, but que sera, sera...

Jrand: If I see the ads on a bus, I'll take a picture of it for you. I have my camera with me at all times, though I must admit, I rarely use it. :-\

Elan, it's lovely to meet you and I hope we hear a lot more from you in the days, months and years to come. And it's always nice to have another New Yorker on this here site that seems to be swamped with West Coasters. I concur with TCB or whoever suggested it--we need a roll call.

WEL: I don't know about Carnegie Hall, but at the Met, singers are booked 4-5 years in advance. I'm sure when Audra was hired for RAISIN the producers knew she'd have to miss. As unfair as it might be to the audience members of RAISIN (who, by the way, would still get to see two of the three headliners), wouldn't it be equally unfair to the people who planned to see Audra in a solo concert if she rescheduled so she wouldn't have to miss RAISIN? Let's face it, Broadway stars don't make a tenth of what TV and movie stars make, even when they're being paid $100,000/wk (which she's not). I can't really blame Ms. McDonald for trying to make a few extra bucks when she can. And, unfortunately, Broadway doesn't hold the place of esteem it used to in the entertainment field anymore, so it makes business sense for her to be pursuing other branches of the industry. Should the producers give fair warning? Yes. Should her manager pay closer attention to her dates? Yes. Is this "trend" going to change in the near future? No--it would appear that this is the new face of the Broadway star--and we can either accept it and continue to enjoy live theatre, or get flustered over it and taint our experiences. I'd prefer to accept it and move on.

I remember during the first year or so of Chicago, they also had a list of dates when Bebe Neuwirth would not be in the show due to prior commitments.  After a while, you had to ask when you purchased your tickets - at the box office - if Ms. Neuwirth was scheduled to be out on a particular night, but the people behind the window seemed to have the info.  -And I happened to be in the city of Chicago when Chicago was playing there, and they had a listing posted next to the box office window when Jasmine Guy was not going to be in the show.

As for the current situation with Audra McDonald, I guess one could go to the box office and see if such information is posted or available.  Via phone, probably not.  *I also suspect, unfortunately, that more people are probably going to see Sean Combs rather than Ms. Rashad and Ms. McDonald - even after the stellar reviews for both actresses.  -And the marketing in some of the more "popular" outlets still emphasizes "P. Diddy's" presence in the play and not the ladies.  There is still a great curiosity factor out there in regards to Mr. Combs... and the fact the producers are considering extending the run even past the point when both actresses would have to drop out is a sure sign of that.  *And I'm sure there are some great fans of Ms. McDonald and Ms. Rashad who are going to the play to see how "good" Mr. Combs is.

Society Hill Playhouse! Dan-the-Man,  eons ago...early eighties...they did a production of my 1930's mystery/comedy, Whodunnit, Darling? ( A title I have always hated, by the by...but we could never come up with anything better).  I wrote it with Larry Drake.  Very Nick and Nora. Lots of clever conversation over cocktails and corpses.  Played several dinner theatres and community theatres.

Some reviews (not from the Philly production):

"...this comedy/mystery moves along smartly...The clues in the play come as fast as the barbs...It's the rapier-witted repartee of the 30's written in the eighties..."

"The wry comedy-mystery...revives the notion of fashionable felons and flatfoots...quite an enjoyable work..."

"...bright, fast-paced and eminently entertaining..."

"The show just seems to sparkle..."

(don't read this if you haven't read the entry).

My heart breaks for her.  When she was explaining what had happened, I could tell it wasn't because of her talent.  But it really would have made a big impact on her to be able to play Millie in front of her family.  It's too bad the higher ups didn't realize that she was from LA.  If I was her I probably would have told them earlier (just in case Darcie was out - so they'd know).  Very heartbreaking.

Too much information?

Victoria Day is celebrated on the first Monday preceding May 25th.  It is a statutory holiday throughout Canada.

Victoria Day is officially the Sovereign's birthday.  The Sovereign's birthday was first observed in Ontario (then called Canada West) in 1845 to celebrate the birthday of Queen Victoria of England (1837-1901).

After the death of Queen Victoria, an Act was passed by the Parliament of Canada establishing a legal holiday on May 24 in each year (or May 25 if May 24 fell on a Sunday) under the name Victoria Day.  An amendment to the Statutes of Canada in 1952 established the celebration of Victoria Day on the Monday preceding May 25.

From 1953 to 1956, the Queen's birthday was celebrated in Canada on Victoria Day.  In 1957, Victoria Day was permanently appointed as the Queen's birthday in Canada.  In the United Kingdom, the Queen's birthday is celebrated in June.

I'm terribly depressed and frustrated.

Nearly two weeks ago I applied for a balance transfer from my current credit card to a new one with a 0% APR until May of next year. Today I got a notice back saying I was denied because my annual income is too low. Well, I have a $9,000 credit limit and they won't transfer my balance?? I haven't spent $9,000 mind you--that's just my limit. But the point is--AT&T felt it was OK to give me a credit limit that high--why won't Chase?!?! How am I ever supposed to pay this freaking thing off if I can't get a lower rate??

The lady at Chase suggested I re-apply when I get my permanent position at MTI--IN SEPTEMBER! The offer for the 0% APR ends June 30. I hate them...

Jason, call AT&T, that owns your current credit card, and tell their representative that you have just received this great offer from Chase.  Tell them that the offer is almost too good to pass up, but being a loyal AT&T customer, you didn't want to drop their company without checking to see if they could come close to matching Chase's offer.  Don't tell them you already applied AND don't tell them you were turned down.  Obviously they won't be able to offer you the great deal that Chase offered, but assuming you have kept your payments current, they might lower your interest.

Hello!!

I'm back from NYC, and had a really great time!  I saw "Avenue Q," "Jumpers," "Forbidden Broadway" and "Wicked" (again).  I hope you guys don't mind if I just lazily give you the link to my LiveJournal, in which I discuss my adventures and nights at the theatre!

http://www.livejournal.com/~bwaybabie/

Wow, there are so many new people!  It just makes me think how long I've been an H/K...I think it's been a year now!  So welcome to Elan, mrkdl73 and any other "newbies" who I haven't met yet!

Also, welcome back, Jason!  I've missed your stories, humor and sweetness.

Good vibes to your grandmother, Emily! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I loved "Urinetown" when I saw it at the Henry Miller, although I do agree that it can be a little too self-referential and arch.  I've heard so many wonderful things about Christiane Noll's Hope...my friends who saw it say she was an improvement on Jennifer Laura Thompson, wacky and golden-voiced as Ms. Thompson was.

Favorite Weill songs--

I'm a Stranger Here Myself
Speak Low
That's Him
September Song
The Saga of Jenny
My Ship
Sing Me Not a Ballad
Surubaya Johnny
Bilbao Song
Youkali Tango
Je Ne T'Aime Pas
Mack the Knife
Pirate Jenny
...so many others...I love me some Weill

BK--I read a book in NYC called "Ever After: The Last Years of Musical Theatre and Beyond" by Barry Singer.  I loved the interview with you!  It's a fabulous book, although I didn't agree with everything Singer said.

OH!

Noel--I went to AADA for a year.  Sorry I wasn't able to answer your question until now!

Jennifer - I don't know how to answer your question. Obvously it's all conjecture. Truthfully, it might not have made a huge difference. This business - for good reason - is not exactly a business known for its altruism. If the management felt it was more convenient to have the new understudy go on than an actress who was leaving, then that's what would happen, hometown or no hometown. But, as I said, I have no idea. Had I been the one shafted, I would have gone back today and asked one more time for ONE performance. That way, the new understudy could have one and I could have one. But I'm one of those annoying "never give up" people.

there's an interview with me in the Singer book?  Who knew?
Title: Re:THE DAYS OF OUR LIVES
Post by: Maya on May 24, 2004, 05:32:05 PM
Well, there were a couple of pages talking about the leading producers of theatre music.  I mean, the book mostly discussed actual productions and theatre politics, but there was also quite a bit on the cast recording industry...for instance, a lot about how labels used to produce far more cast recordings than they do today, because of rising costs.

Was it an OLD interview?  The book definitely quoted you, BK.  I can't tell you what it said, because I borrowed it from a friend and don't have it on me now. :(

It must be old - I have some vague memory of talking to him for the NY Times - probably that one.  I'll check it out.

BK--I read a book in NYC called "Ever After: The Last Years of Musical Theatre and Beyond" by Barry Singer.  I loved the interview with you!  It's a fabulous book, although I didn't agree with everything Singer said.

DR Maya, check out Peter Filichia's review from last week, in which he calls it the worst book on musical theatre in 25 years!  I find it confusingly assembled, and having worked  with Mr Singer, I'll say no more . . .

I've just come from a delightful dinner at Joe Allen's (in honot of BK) with DR Danise.  She's a lovely lady, and I think we had a lot of fun.  I wanted some banana cream pie, but I had to get back here and deal with some deadlines.

elmore, I feel the same about Mr. Singer.  I remember when Mr. Sondheim "insisted" we use him to write the notes for Unsung Sondheim.  I thought they weren't very good and have been surprised ever since that Mr. Singer continues to write regularly as a knowledgable theater person.

Thank you, Elmore, for reminding me of what an asset Peter Filichia is to both TheatreMania.com, and to the theatre community.  When I read "Ever After," I DID notice inconsitencies like his calling "Big River" a concept musical, but I just told myself that I must be wrong because he's a writer for the NY Times, and I'm not.  Wow....now I feel like reading that book was just a big waste, even though I DID learn things from it.

DR Maya, trust me; it isn't the worst book ever written on musicals in the past 25 years.  I think Denny Martin Flinn's MUSICAL! is.  Don't let a review keep you from reading something that interests you, because you may disagree with the reviewer, and the more you know, the broader your scope.  I enjoy your intelligence and insight, which are very sharp for a young lady.  I hope I'll have a while to watch you grow and develop on this site

Aww, thanks, Elmore!  I always enjoy reading your posts as well!

I just like learning as much about theatre as I can, even if my knowledge can sometimes be reduced to trivia about who played what role and who won what Tony.

I also just started on a new book called "Making it on Broadway."

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1581153465/qid=1085449904/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/002-6847218-5581617

It has anecdotes from many prominent Broadway performers about what it's like to work in the business.  It's very illuminating so far, but also rather disillusioning.  Some of the stars talk about working day jobs even while doing a Broadway show...or going home alone on the subway after the show is done.  It's not all gloom and doom though...there are some very funny stories too.  Anyway, I recommend it!

Maya, lucky you.  You got to see JUMPERS and one of the best actors working in the English Language theatre today...Simon Russell Beale.  I had desperately wanted to see this play on a planned trip to England this Spring which I had to cancel due to pre-production rewrites on my mini-series.  But I've been fortunate to see Mr. Simon Russell Beale on many occasions in London...Duchess of Malfi, Money, Summerfolk, and the incredible Humble Boy.  He always delights me. Stoppard...along with Peter Shaffer...also happens to be my favourite living playwright.  So you got a two-for-one deal with Jumpers.

Question is who'll get the Tony?  Plummer or Beale (or is it Russell Beale?)?  Is Frank Langella realistically in the running against these two?  If I had to vote, I'd go crazy.  These are three of my favourite theatre actors.

Yes, I feel very lucky to have seen it, and Russell Beale was quite amazing!  I want to read more Stoppard as well--I'm really not as familiar with his work as I should be.

That's a good question as to who will win!!  It's like Battle of the Shakespeareans!  I honestly don't know, but I would be more than happy with either one as I love them both!

Let me say even before the final competition on Tuesday that I will NOT be watching the two hour results show on Wednesday night. I may watch the last half hour or so, but as I rememberedlast year's endless countdown leading up to Ruben being named the winner, I learned my lesson.

Found out what shows my theatre company is doing next season! YAY!

Here they are:

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
1776
Sound of Music
Grease
Seussical
Beauty and the Beast
Christmas Carol

Since you all seem to be pretty knowledgable here... I'm going to ask you for some help. Which parts should I go for?  I'm 15 years old, 5'6, strawberry blonde hair, and a soprano.. though give me some time and I can sing pretty much anything you give me. So.. any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help!

Is this a young persons' theatre troupe or one for adults and young people?  If the latter, I'm thinking Liesl in The Sound of Music would be a perfect match.  If the former, there are lots of roles that could be good for you.

Either Liesl or Louisa...depending on how "old" you read onstage. Those would be my suggestions, though--if you're 15--I'd think that Louisa would be a better choice.

I took a short nap this evening and ever since waking up, I've been dizzy and just a tad nauseous. I don't know what's wrong with me, but it's not a pleasant feeling...

I'm going to have to catch up on today's posts later.  Had a good first day at work, much better than I expected.

But.

After, der Brucer wanted a drink so we could talk things over, hash over the day.

But.

Instead, we met some interesting people, and had a couple of drinks which turned into three.

Hey, he's needed a night like this for a while.  He's tucked in for the night.  I just want to kick back, get rested up for tomorrow.  I'm under the gun here, what with Memorial Day Weekend coming up in less than a week and the Summer Crush begins, giving me less than a week for training.  I'll be fine, just give me a good night's sleep.

Good note: The boss and one of my coworkers already think I'm better than one of the others on the staff.  Now I just have to prove them right, not wrong.

Time to call it a wussburger night.  Sorry, all.

This is such a strange business. It's full of big emotions, yet sometimes lacking heart. One of the writers on the panel recounted how his first break came when he was given an assignment to rewrite a script for a series. He got the script on a Friday going into the Thanksgiving Day weekend. The producers said that they needed the rewrite first thing on Monday! The only problem was that his wife was due to deliver their baby on Saturday. He told the producers. They said, "The script is due first thing Monday." Both the script and the baby were delivered.

Good Evening!

After dinner tonight, I decided to go ahead and drive back up to NoVA, and, boy, am I glad I did.  It was a beautiful night to drive with the windows down.  The temp had dropped, and so had the humidity.  Hopefully, my "not so Evil Eye" will not come so early in the morning.

I did hit some construction work on I-95 on the way up, and decided to take the next exit and bypass it via Route 1.  However, after about four miles of "hopeful" driving, I realized I should have been going the other way.  So, I turned around, got on Route 1... -And the detour only added about 10 minutes to my trip.  Not bad at all.

I left the ceiling in the kitchen as is.  I am "happy" that the landlord came over personally to check it out, but now we're playing the waiting game - again(!!!) - for the various contractors and repairmen.  Hopefully, it will be repaired by the time I get back there next week.  Although, that also means the kitchen floor - and the kitchen in general - will be due for some major cleaning too... -Just how I want to spend my day off!!!  Yippee!!!  -Ugh... :-\

DR singerdreamer - That's a nice season listing.  Which company?  Where?  Etc...

DR Maya - WELCOME!

RE: Juliana's journal from today
(don't read this if you haven't read the entry).

My heart breaks for her.  When she was explaining what had happened, I could tell it wasn't because of her talent.  But it really would have made a big impact on her to be able to play Millie in front of her family.  It's too bad the higher ups didn't realize that she was from LA.  If I was her I probably would have told them earlier (just in case Darcie was out - so they'd know).  Very heartbreaking.

-And the whole situation can work in reverse too... unfortunately...

An actor with whom I've worked a couple of times was understudying an actor in a very critically acclaimed play on Broadway a couple of years ago.  The "overstudy" had never missed a show even after a couple of months into the run - not even during the out-of-town tryout.  Well, there happened to be one performance where the "overstudy" would be out due to a previous commitment.  So, this provided the "understudy" with the opportunity to make his Broadway debut.  He arranged to have his family flown in.  Friends bought tickets for that particular night, etc.  All this had been arranged and announced weeks in advance.  Weeks!  It was even posted at the Box Office window that the "overstudy" would be out on the particular night.

As it turned out, the "overstudy's" commitment got cancelled at the last minute...  And he decided to go ahead and go on that night with just a few hours notice to stage management.  But what about the "understudy's" family who had flown in, his friends who were in the audience??  The "understudy's" pleas to the "overstudy" to let him go on that night fell on deaf ears... -Even though the cast listing in the lobby even had the "At This Performance, The Role of..." placard up.

Needless to say, the "understudy" was heartbroken, as were his family and friends.

And it wasn't until after the "understudy" left the show when his contract was up, that the "overstudy" took a "personal day" and let his "new understudy" go on.

Sad, but true.
