Title: GENERAL UNEASE
Post by: bk on April 09, 2006, 12:10:28 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a general unease not unlike mine own, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they, too, are feeling a general unease and are moving about lethargically, like a gazelle in pasties.

I know precisely the feeling of unease BK is experiencing.

I've experienced it a few times in my life, as well.  It's most unsettling.  I normally slap myself out of of it...err...oh!  I typed "slap" but I meant snap...yes, "snap" myself out of it.

Unfortunately, the amount of effort that can take truly depends on the root behind the unease (or dis-ease, which is a perfectly good word for it, if pronounced properly).

I hope you either shake it off or discover its cause and eradicate it, Bruce.

I'm rather wondering if it isn't simply because things are -- from my viewpoint -- going so professionally well for you that your unease may be that you're waiting for something to happen to disrupt it all.

I had a most interesting Saturday at home.

Interesting to me...I daresay it's of relative disinterest to many.

I spent the bulk of my day listening to CDs....piles of CD that hadn't even been opened NEEDED listening to.

After all...if something is wrong with one of them, one must know about it so that it can be sent back for a replacement.  I need to keep that in mind for my DVD piles, as well.

At any rate, I truly needed no prodding to sit and have a listen to my new 3-CD original soundtrack recording of the musical "Goodbye, Mr. Chips."  I had read on another messageboard that some folks had discovered they had a disc in their sets that would not play or would skip around.  I wanted no such silliness coming out of my set, I can tell you.

And none did.  All three discs played beautifully.  And I have to say it was a mesmerizing listen, all three discs. And there were some emotional moments, to be sure, hearing this stuff sound this good.  All the alternate cues and the interview tracks and the demo recordings rather make a sumptuous wallow for a true fan of this film (which I believe myself to be).

Now...if only someone could release the stereo recording made of the original score Andre Previn wrote for an earlier version of the project...wow!

Another CD I spent a good deal of time with is the glorious score written by Marvin Hamlisch for "The Swimmer"...lyrical, melodic, lush and unsettlingly moving.  Orchstrators Leo Shuken and Jack Hayes doubtlessly worked some major miracles for Hamlisch's first foray into film scoring...there are nuances upon nuances and incredible emotional rushes throughout this wonderful score.

From "The Swimmer", I moved into "House of Bamboo" by Leigh Harline...the latest stereo 1950s score to be issued...and a real beauty it is.  It arrived in today's mail and it's a stunning score, with interesting occidental accents and strong melodic writing by Harline (Harline is known to most of you by his music for "Pinocchio", for which he won an Oscar for best score and another Oscar with Ned Washington for Best Song).

I then turned to Harline's equally wonderful, but considerably different, score to "Warlock"...an unusual western from 1959 that is mostly forgotten today but packs a considerable dramatic punch and has this marvellous score.  On the same CD with "Warlock" is Hugo Friedhofer's excellent score for a film called "Violent Saturday."

So...Bricusse dressed up by John Williams, and Leigh Harline and Hugo Friedhofer consumed my afternoon, engaged my senses and left me wonderfully drained.

But that wasn't enough. Oh, no.  I decided I had to watch one of my newly acquired DVDs.

So...what was it going to be?

I opted for one with a score I've long admired, but isn't available on a commercial recording...a score by composer Leonard Rosenman.

The movie was "Making Love."  I recall at the time it was released that the studio (Fox) felt it was doing something daring, but I never got that from the film.  I don't think the critics did, either.

It's a decent enough story, but it has these two marvellous characters played winningly by Michael Ontkean (Zach) and Kate Jackson (Claire).  It's their relationship at the beginning of the film that draws you in and convinces you that they're meant for one another.  And it's that relationship and the actors' performances at the end that break your heart because they cannot be together and cannot remain close friends because their love had been so special and strong.

It's what happens in the middle that becomes a muddle for me...despite what was established between him and Claire, Zach starts flirting with a latent homosexuality.  Of course, Claire doesn't have a clue.   But she starts suspecting something...because her "soulmate" has shut her out.  An affair is what she thinks he might be having, and she tries very hard to get him to open up.  Meanwhile, Zach's trading quips and "instructive" monologues with Harry Hamlin (Bart) in an attempt to both instruct and engage the audience into the complexities of (1) coming out, (2) being totally honest with everyone in your life, and (3) painting a portrait of two mean -- one of whom wants a lasting relationship with a man and another who is content to engage in hedonistic one-night stands.

And it's that middle bit that destroys the relationship we latch onto at the beginning and that breaks our hearts at the end.

Throughout it all, Rosenman's score is simply beautiful -- engaging and uplifting and heartbreaking in its own right.

I have a soft spot for Kate Jackson.

Allergies!  I hit the bed around 1 am, knowing I had to be up by 8 am, and spent more than an hour trying to relax while that damned blooming tree ouotside my window kept sending me little pieces of itself to clog my sinuses and throat.  I have no idea when I finally passed out, but I am not functioning at my normal already lowered capacity.  I would love to spend the day here, but there are friends to be seen and fun to be had.

I'll start a topic and see how it fares:  our DR MattH wasn't convinced about Gilbert & Sullivan after Friday night's PINAFORE, which I consider one of Gilbert's least successful librettos cmpared to GONDOLIERS, MIKADO, IOLANTHE, or PATIENCE, which DR Danise and I saw last year at New York City Opera.  I love PINAFORE's score, although Sullivan's greatest, in my bbok, is IOLANTHE or YEOMAN OF THE GUARD.  Which Gilbert and Sullivan operas have you DRs seen, and were they professional or amateur performances?

DR MattH, I wanted to ask you something about this week's VERONICA MARS.

spoilers.

Okay first off, if you want to see how smart I am, I actually watched the first 40 minutes, came online to post, and started reading your VERONICA review for this week (totally forgetting that i hadn't seen the last 20 minutes). Duh!

Anyhow, you said the end had a shocking ending.  What exactly do you think happened?

I really didn't get it the first time I saw it.  But anyhow, it seemed like Logan pushed the destruction button.  And then we saw that the Thumper guy was in the bathroom, which we didn't realize was in the building.  Okay i think part of what confused me was that they then showed veronica watching the destruction on tv, but i thought thumper was watching the tv (they didn't change the scene).

And then we see weivel at confession.

So the Fitzpatricks put thumper in the building, and weivel is confessing to setting thumper up to get the fitzpatricks to go after him (thumper). I'm assuming weivel has no idea that thumper is in the building, right?

Sometimes i feel like you need to be really smart and quick to pick up on everything.

Another question, so the motorcycle that was in the building, who put it there? And why?  At first i thought that woody (is that the guy who logan was working for?) was involved.  The witness veronica found mentioned the bike (it belonged to thumper). So we're to assume that thumper killed felix (the guy logan was blamed for). But what does this have to do with the bus crash?

I got an email from the director of SEUSSICAL last night about 11 pm.  He is having special auditions for the Cat in the Hat in the middle of THE SOUND OF MUSIC auditions today and Monday - because he has to know if the Cat will be cast as a male OR female (I know, I know).

His choreographer is my cousin (yes THAT Madame Rose) - whose main job as a dance teacher is dragging her poor students to these dance competitions all over the country that mean absolutely NOTHING....but a run by profit-making exploitation cheaters....but THAT is another story.  Anyway, of course she is out of town at a "competition" - so he asked me if I could come in and do the dance part of the audition.

Well - my opinion of the score is nil because I am completely indifferent to the show....but I have been working on a bout 32 measures of some song from the CD....so hopefully it will be all right.

Other than that, I am just going to waltz with the adults auditioning for MUSIC and listening to them sing.  One woman called the director and asked him if it would just be all right if her daughter sang "Happy Birthday" - the director said, no.  And the woman said the daughter just wanted to be in the children's chorus.....  And the director had to break the news to her:  There is no children's chorus in THE SOUND OF MUSIC.

Mikado, college production, stage managed.

And I've got the Papp Pirates on DVD, terrible taping but it gives a good idea of the fun of the staging.

DR Jennifer, the shock for me was that THumper was in the structure that was demolished. I thought that maybe that was the school bathroom or something innocuous to humiliate him. But these guys don't play the humiliation game when one of their own got killed. It's an eye-for-an-eye with them.

I do think Weivel knew THumper was going to be killed. Whether he knew the method or not isn't important, at least I don't think so.

I think I'm a little more even tempered today and can watch the heartbreaking BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN to its conclusion (I just couldn't handle that yesterday).

I think I'll put BLONDE VENUS from the Dietrich set to watch. I've had it on laserdisc for a long time, so I'll be anxious to see how they compare.

I think I'd also like to watch the 1969 GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS on laserdisc since there has been talk recently about this musical.

Yesterday, a friend and I were talking about THE YELLOW ROLLS ROYCE, a movie I haven't seen since I saw it at Radio City Music Hall back in the 1960s. My friend had it on laserdisc, but I don't.

Last night, I searched the internet and found the LP soundtrack (which I already have) but not the laserdisc of the movie which I was interested in buying.

Lo and behold, I see that the movie is coming on TCM this week, and I can burn my own DVD copy. Doesn't look like Warners is in any hurry to issue this on DVD. (I'm assuming the MGM film is under their control.)

I'm also going to be able to burn a DVD of LOVELY TO LOOK AT this week since it's also coming on TCM (tomorrow, in fact). I have the restored Technicolor enhanced videotape, but the sound on it is sometimes kind of funky, and the DVD will have much high resolution, so I'm eager to get that done, too.

I have that live recording of the Papp PIRATES OF PENZANCE, too. Not because I like the piece, but one suffers through most anything to see Kevin Kline in his true heyday.

Before Brent Barrett assumed the title of WSMA, I think Kevin Kline was right up there among the finalists.

Old Court House (http://www.daytonhistory.org/oldcourt.htm)

in downtown Dayton.  There we attended the To Kill a Mockingbird gala, the finale to our second annual Big Read.  It was quite a sparkling event, with great southern food, presentation of 6 Atticus Finch Quiet Hero Awards (one to a favorite nonprofit client of mine), and, of course, Tequila Mockingbirds to drink (actually a watery Margarita, but fun nonetheless!).

Well, Ginny! Enjoy the concert! sounds like it will be a lot of family girl get-together fun.

I went with my two sisters yesterday to look at slabs o' granite, for my younger sister's kitchen re-do. Gosh, slabs of stone!! I was enthralled. Slice into a mountain, and see eons... it was deeply spiritual for me... my sister's were a little perplexed by my reaction to potential counter tops...

Cillaliz! Sorry about the cat stuff. I am very respectful of cats - I don't really understand them; they are more like lizards or insects than other mammals I've known. An alien life form, revered and approached with great humility. My friend Eva Moon, the singer songwriter, has a song called Ankle Biter about one of her cats.

It's kind of a muted, cloudy day here at Playa Vista. Silence, except for the hummm of certain appliances and the computer. No random voices from the complex - people with day jobs sleep in on Sundays, I'm guessing.

I remember Sundays - my dad played softball and we played in the park, picked those little lawn-daisies, climbed oddly-shaped trees we gave names to - like Bigfoot -  while he argued with umpires and focused on the ball. Then, stopped on the way home at the Jewish Bakery to get bagels and rye bread and challah, rugelach and walnut coffee rings for the week - the baker used to hand us those wonderful little butter cookies to keep us quiet. Then to the deli for pickles and smoked cod and lox and a pint of that whipped cream cheese. Then the news stand for the Herald Examiner and the LA Times - about 15 pounds of newspaper, gift-wrapped in Comics!!!

Then brunch and papers on their big bed, with dogs and kids, and fighting over the comics. How did I miss all those details back then? Well, if I can see and smell it all now, I guess I didn't really miss it - I just didn't have a clue, back then, how important the memory would be this Sunday...

The ex saved a phone message from New Year's Eve 1990. I found it and played it last week - it was my dad, calling to say Happy New Year - the whole message is just him, singing Auld Lang Syne. The first and only time I ever heard him sing in tune. He actually had a voice. He used to pretend to think music was just for women and fairies - but secretly loved it. Oh, how he enjoyed the family dinners when Grandma would play the piano and we all sang. After he had had a couple of drinks, he would sing with us - his head shaking to the rhythm of his vibrato - never in the same key as the rest of us - transported and happy. He had us as proxies for a lot of his appreciation of beauty.

Oh! Speaking of the ex!!! He came into town on Friday night, for an audition on Saturday. Then hopped into the ol' CRX to drive back to Phoenix immediately. Well, the car gets somewhere between 42 and 47 miles per gallon. So he filled it when he left Phoenix on Friday, drove to Agoura Hills to stay at my sister Rikki's place over night, drove to his audition in the morning, then put ONE GALLON of gas in for the drive back.

Chuck, ONE GALLON?? yeah. See, he had 3 one-dollar bills, and a few twenties... instead of breaking a large bill, he just got $3 worth. Oh, okay, I get it. Makes sense, now.

Anyhow, I'm talking to him on the phone, when I left my sister's and headed back to the Marina. He's in the middle of the desert, somewhere between California and Arizona. He suddenly says - there's something strange happening with this car! It's making odd sputtering noises.

And it sputtered for a couple of minutes, and then just stopped. It COULDN'T be outa gas - he had only driven 523 miles, and he HAD just put a whole gallon in. Maybe he had miscalculated! Hahahahahahaaa! At least he laughed about it when I did the math for him (he has always been a bit a-numeric...). So he called 911, and a smokey stopped by, and called a guy, and within half an hour, a truck came with a gallon of gas for him. Only cost him $110.

Chuckie relayed all this info to me laughing, in that sonorous baritone, when he called me back. He used to not have such a sense of humor about life -

We're thinking about issuing the Sondheim benefit from SF on CD.  It will all depend on the final edit and sound, but they've gotten it to sound pretty decent from what I've heard, there are a lot of good Sondheim songs, and I wouldn't mind having a Sondheim album on Kritzerland.  When Guy did his number "live" he insisted on having balloons, which always seemed to be in front of his face.  When you have a head mic and sing into balloons the sound phases out and sounds grotesque, hence we had to replace the vocal.  Guy was marching around the room and was able to match what he did vocally during the show.

If I am to be honest (and I am), I don't know that I've ever seen a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta on stage.  Maybe I saw a touring version of the Papp Penzance, but that would be it, I'm afraid.

I'm back from a lovely brunch with DRs Maria, Jose, and his charming friend Andy, and a good time was had by one and all.  I am now going to read today's newspapers and perhaps watch that Rosie O'Donnell documentary on HBO.  New York is beautiful today, after being quite ugly yesterday.  The taxi ride back to the Upper West Side filled me up with love for this City, which I don't always have, and this is my time to chill out for a bit.

TOD seems to be G&S - I loved the Joe Papp Pirates with Kevin Kline as the Pirate King. Seen a Mikado or two, Pirates in other productions - good and bad - and Pinafore, the score of which I consider perfection, indeed! Seen Yeomen and Ruddigore and Gondoliers. Sang in Iolanthe a couple of times. Sang Mabel and Josephine a few times. Heard some - egad!- Excerpt concerts. LOVE the Mikado performance backdrop to the final scenes of the Goldie Hawn/Chevy Chase film, Foul Play!! I am a G&S fan, but not so fanatic as some of my acquaintances! I pay my proper homage in a few chapters in Jewish Thighs.

G & S:  My intro was attending productions of the Ann Arbor (MI) G & S Society when I was a student.  The ones I remember were Pirates of Penzance and Princess Ida.

In my community theater days here in Middletown, I got to be a bridesmaid in Trial by Jury, directed by our very own DR Elmore.  It was so-o-o-o much fun!

The now-dormant Sorg Opera Company here in town did HMS Pinafore and The Mikado, which DH Richard and I enjoyed.

Out of bed at last.  A bit mopy...and not looking forward to the wrangle with IRS and California tax forms.  But...whachagonnado!

I've been enjoying the USA Network promos for their upcoming airings of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The first promo is hysterical inasmuch as it shows how many falls, plunges, knockdowns, attacks Frodo endures....a whole lot...and that's just in the first movie.

The outro line:

"'It sucks being Frodo'....all next week.'

Cillaliz, at first I thought Nilla had already had the surgery and was having a reaction to the anesthetic.  This is very strange behavior and I agree, something is wrong with him.

After reading your second description of his behavior I agree he was just trying to convey something is wrong and not to hurt you.

Good vibes all is well when he returns-it should be, or if not immediately, it will be.

I had breakfast with Paul this morning.  I told him I really didn't need all that to happen right now, while I'm prepping for a trial.  He said  "So when exactly is a good time to be attacked by a cat?"   LOL, he did make me laugh.   Sort of like people saying they didn't need to get hit by a tornado today.  There never is a good day for that either

I've just caught up and GOLLY!

I had a kitten who acted in a similar way once...although with differences.  He was hissing and pooping and peeing and throwing a fit and hiding from me because I was trying to get him and hold him....and -- after about 10 minutes -- suddenly just snapped out of it and looked around as if to say, "What was that?"

After I thought about it for a while, I realized it was shock.  Earlier that afternoon, my kitty had encountered -- for the first time -- a much bigger cat in our yard.  My little "Dickens" was the master of his domain and tried to defend his turf. I'm positive the other cat, a bit startled, just swatted him away.  Dickens was ready to come in when I went out to investigate his cat-erwauling.

It was suppertime, anyway, so I put out a dish of food...and several minutes later, his little "hissing fit" started.  I'm thinking he was reliving it in his little head and possibly thinking of what he "might" have done.

Once he snapped out of it, though, he was fine...and ready for lots of schmoozing and cuddling and an early bedtime.

I'm thinking that your Nilla, Cillaliz, must have been enduring some sort of trauma...and that the dental pain is probably what sent Nilla over the edge.

I also had a cat bite once.  Finger swelled up to more than twice its size...I was hospitalized and put on IV for several days.  When that didn't work, the finger was cut open and cleaned out.  I was bitten on a Sunday afternoon and didn't seek help until the next morning.  BIG mistake.  Doctor told me the first thing I should have done was to take a bottle of saline solution (the kind you use for contact lenses) and direct the stream into the bite....and to use the whole bottle to ensure the wound was cleaned out...and THEN get to a doctor to make sure.

Cat bites are exceedingly dangerous.  Seek medical attention immediately.

Penny, my Sunday memories changed over the years.  The ones yours triggered are slightly reversed, reading the comics in bed before going to the bakery and deli with my father.  He always let me have extra treats at the bakery but I had to wait until dessert for the halvah.  Brunch was a big affair eaten around the dinning table-mustn’t leave out my mother’s perfect scrambled eggs.  After the dishes were done my mother stayed home while the rest of us walked to the tennis courts at Rancho Park.  How we could play tennis after all that food amazes me.

Thanks again for the advice on Nilla. I am feeling pretty down and worried about it.  I drove past the vet hospital hoping I may catch the vet doing his rounds, but no such luck so I went to Dairy Queen

I'm really afraid nilla has something fairly serious wrong.  He had an elevated creatinine level last time he had teeth removed which is a sign of kidney problems.  I've been doing some research and he is having several other symptoms of kidney disease.   They had planned to a thorough blood level check before surgery, so I'm sure they will.   I'm just being a worried Mom today.

Nilla didn't bite me, but I'm on pretty strong antibiotics because i was having some of the same symptoms as my niece, who we later discovered has a form of pneumonia that is contageous and not viral.   So luckily, even before they told me I could catch this, I went to the doc and he gave me the same antibiotics she's on

I started the afternoon with the HBO documentary detailing the Rosie and Kelli O'Donnell cruise for families and friends of gay folk. Surprisingly moving in many spots, and one can understand how special these people feel surrounded by love and support and nonjudgmental people. When they reach Nassau where a couple of churches are staging very ugly gay protest rallies, the idyll of the cruise is shattered momentarily by rank hatred and prejudice. Still, I quite enjoyed the ninety minutes.

DR George, the DVD was dubbed while I watched, and it's set to go out into the mail to you tomorrow.

Next, I watched the musical version of GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS on laserdisc.

This has to be the weirdest photography ever for a big budget roadshow musical. I can understand how the screen goes to soft focus in MAME when Lucy Ball has a close-up; they were trying to disguise her true age. But unless this is just a miserable laserdisc transfer (and parts of it are stunningly colorful and crisp) isolated scenes are washed out and soft, and I don't just think it's a bad print used for the transfer. It looks like the focus of the photography was softened, but I can't figure out any reason why particular shots were done that way and not entire sequences. It seems like haphazard decisions were being made on the fly. Of course, I've never thought Herb Ross was that great a director anyway.

This isn't the first time I watched this laserdisc, but it's the first time on the bigger screen TV, and I guess that's why I noticed it this time and not the other dozen times I've watched the film.

Since I had about 20 minutes left before getting on-line, I put in another widescreen movie I hadn't watched on the bigger screen TV - HOW THE WEST WAS WON.

Imagine my astonishment to note that this DVD was NOT enhanced for widescreen TVs! Wonder why I had never noticed that before? Big, big disappointment about that. This is a film desperately in need of a new DVD transfer. The print they used was very dirty, so there are spots and speckles all over the place. And the sound is only Dolby Prologic which also deserves a much fuller sound design for DVD.

Tax season is drawing to a close, with this being the next to last working weekend for many months.  The timing of the holidays is particularly bad this year, with the Orthodox Jewish co-worker with whom I share a workload being out Wednesday, Thursday and Friday because of the main holy days of Passover and then also on Saturday because it's Sabbath.  And many people will be taking off Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Skip's off to see CARNIVAL! at Paper Mill tonight.  I saw it on Thursday night, but we tend not to do this kind of road trip together because of our preference not to leave the dogs alone for the seven hours or so such a trip takes as a whole.  Despite tax season, or perhaps because of it, I've still gotten to see a good deal of theater this past week.

Went to see our dear neighbor Yolande Bavan in BERNARDA ALBA at Lincoln Center on Friday night, and she's still got everything she had so many years ago as a singer and performer; plus by happy coincidence another dear neighbor Bertilla Baker happened to be going on in one of the other roles that night, so we cabbed home with Yolande and Bertilla, and had a lovely late-night drink at Le Madeleine with Yolande.

Sure, my client is charged with conspiracy to distribute over 500 grams of a mixture containing methamphetamine or over 50 grams of pure methamphetamine and possession with intent to deliver 500 grams of a mixture containing methamphetamine. Both counts carry a minimum of 10 years, but with the quantities involved, it's more like 20-25 years.

The government claims my client did a hand to hand sale with a snitch under surveillance, had an apartment rented in his name where meth was cut with MSM and then sold (no furniture there, just the stuff for the drugs - oh yeah, and my client's fingerprint on the bag containing drugs) and that he was having people make trips back and forth to california for him to bring in pounds of meth.

Let's just say this is one of those cases that my client is getting his right to a jury trial because he wants a jury trial.  I'm not expected to win, which actually makes it more fun for me.  I can be creative, go out on a limb and really try to stir things up.  I've won some that way and lost some that way.  If I win, I'm pulling a rabbit out of my hat.  If I lose, well it's what people thought would happen.   The pressure is on the government because this is considered a slam dunk for them.   There is no  pressure on me and I really do have some legitimate things to argue about. Maybe enough to create doubt, not sure....I'll find out in the next couple days.

Yes, the sense of unease has abated somewhat.  Part of the sense of unease is of my own making, and I just have to stop doing it.

Tammy had to put herself on tape for some film audition (the people are in NY), so she came here and I did that for her, as well as directing her - she did well, and I think the tape is good.  I'm not sure she's the type they're going to be looking for, but she spoke the lines well and her characterization was good.

I'm now officially starving and am trying to figure out what to eat.

;D I saw a clip of Rosie on "Good Morning America," talking about that incident.  She said that Kelli (her wife) advised her not to get off the boat.  Also on the cruise was Malcolm X's eldest daughter, who Rosie knows, and she went and spoke on Rosie's behalf in support of the cruise and (I'm guessing) gay people/parents.

Nice to know about Malcolm X's daughter.  I hope the people listened to her.

What a relief!  I discovered 3 business suits that fit me. Now I know I'll be ready for the trial.  Everything has gone casual for day to day businessm so I normally wear a jacket and pants (and shirt and shoes) to court. But I think jurors expect a suit. So tomorrow I shall be suited.

You have a very good point. The work place has gotten very casual. I can wear jeans to work and sometimes I do if I am doing shifting or a lot of lifting but I try to dress nicely.

I’m having soup for dinner, it feels so good.  All day I have been drinking tea, eating watermelon and taking Cold Eeze (zinc lozenges).

While it is never fun to be sick, Tuesday night would have been far more convenient-I have activities the next two days which can’t be cancelled.  For one I need to bake goodies & prepare to host & lead my book discussion group which will meet here on Tuesday morning.  It should be a fun activity not a chore.

In the larger scheme of things this is a minor disappointment, nothing compared to what Cillaliz when through……..still it’s a pain. ;D

I've just spent a lovely evening at "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee," courtesy of our wonderfully generous and kind  DRWilliamFOrr and his handsome everlovin' Joe.  DR Ben made up the fourth of our party and DR Jose and his friend Andy also showed up.  I don't know homw many DRs have seen the show, but it's quite delightrful:  very funny and full of heart and humanity,  I've always liked Bill Finn socially but I haven't been a fan of his work; I loved everything about this show, and I thought Bill's work was quite wonderful.

I've just packed my bag for an emergency flight tomorrow to Ohio, if I have to make the trip, and I plan to spend the first couple of hours tomorrow morning here by the phone.  My father's surgery is scheduled for 7 am.  I will chill out now and read a bit of my new book on Mozart's operas.  As I think positively about tomorrow.

Hands across the table,
While the lights are low,
Though you hush your lips,
Your finger tips
Tell me all I want to know.
Hands across the table,
Meet so tenderly,
And they say,
In their little way,
That you belong to me.

And then finished my evening's viewing with CROSSING JORDAN. Again, not the most compelling case they were investigating. More interesting was the subplot involving Jordan trying to become a foster parent.

My viewing was somewhat spoiled by the idiots at the local NBC affiliate forgetting to kick over to high definition once the first set of commercials was finished. They will be getting an e-mail from me about that.

Which is precisely why I love books, theatre and film....it isn't real life. It may mirror or explain things that happen in real life, but it's a world of its own - delightful, silly tragic, scary whatever you want and when it's over, barring something tragic, the audience, the cast and crew go back to their lives, hopefully changed a little, but even if it's REALLY bad, no one goes to jail...well not for the quality of the show anyway ;)

Today, in addition to taxes, I managed to strip my bed, flip my mattress and remake the bed.  I also washed sheets and clothes and pillows and dried all...only just finishing after having started around noon.

There was a lull or two when I forgot what I was doing, like the couple of hours I spend on taxes.

But it feels good knowing I have a freshly turned mattress and clean sheets/pillows to sleep upon!
