TOD: A slew of movies just came in the from the library, including "An Education," "The Men Who Stare at Goats," "Up in the Air" and "Broken Embraces," so I have a choice of what to watch this weekend. Now, if I only had the time ...

Still listening to the lyrics of Lerner at home. Next up: "Brigadoon" and, if I can find it, the album of Lerner (and Kaye Ballard, et al.) singing his songs.

Car: "The Human Comedy." I'm enjoying it so much I started re-reading the book.

WIGGLES is free!  And why would someone own a pitbull when they have such a reputation?  Of course they might be great dogs and loved by their owners.....but they are not a friendly breed....so many court cases on tv and in the newspapers.....and most of them involving serious injury to innocent parties....and children.

New bedding?

On Monday I also bought NEW BEDDING.  I am now The Boy With the Dragon Comforter.

.....well if everyone in the world is divided up into boys and girls.....I'm a boy.

From I Love Lucy.....

Ethel:  We can't do that.
Lucy:  Why not?
Ethel:  Well for one thing it says they're looking for girls.
Lucy:  We're girls.
Ethel:  We are?
Lucy:  Ethel, if everyone in the world is divided up into girls and boys - we're GIRLS!

And that's how they ended up on the top of the Empire State Building impersonating Women From Mars.

Okay, where are the girls?

DR MBarnum, I guess that is good that the owner keeps trying to make the boards on his fence higher. But if the dog keeps getting out ...

I know here dogs are not allowed to run loose if the owner is not around.  They would probably get a warning here. And then if it kept happening, maybe they would do something.

TOD:

CD - Boy and the Pirates (AOPP) & Art Garfunkel

DVD - Dinah East - a most unusual motion picture from the 1970's about a great movie star who dies and the discovery is made that she was a man!  I guess Miss Mae West hated the picture, sued to have it stopped, and was successful.  It should have been stopped on its own.  Pretty horrible.....acting wise, etc.

Good morning, all! And a special hello to DR Laura!

I have the laundry in the washer and I'm waiting for my coffee. When the laundry goes into the dryers around 8:45, I shall tidy the apartment and vacuum. I want to be at the NYPL by 11 so I can accomplish some research and be home by 2 or so.

BK, what was the outcome of that situation you wanted vibes for early in the week or late last week? I remember sending bad karma vibes to some nemesis on your premises.

Is what BK got really a comforter. Or is it a duvet?  I've never heard of a comforter that you put in a cover.

DR Jennifer, I looked this up on the wikipedia encyclopedia:

In Westphalia, an English travel-writer observed with surprise in 1749,

"There is one thing very particular to them, that they do not cover themselves with bed-cloaths, but lay one feather-bed over, and another under. This is comfortable enough in winter, but how they can bear their feather-beds over them in summer, as is generally practised, I cannot conceive." — Thomas Nugent, The Grand Tour 1749, vol II. p. 66
Duvets are still commonly used in Europe (especially in northern Europe where it is the most common form of bed covering), and have become popular throughout the world in the late 20th century.

Duvets reduce the complexity of making a bed, as it is a single covering instead of the combination of bed sheets, blankets, and quilts or other bed covers, which is traditional in many parts of the world. The cover is called a "duvet cover" or a "quilt cover".

In modern times, a duvet is sometimes filled with silk, wool, cotton, or artificial fibers (such as polyester batting or other artificial material); it is sometimes confused with a comforter. Although comforters go on top of the traditional sheets and blankets, duvets are used by themselves.

In some European countries, any thick, warm blanket is subject to being called a duvet, as this has become a popular name for these kinds of blankets.

In Australia, a duvet or down quilt is often called a "Doona", which is a genericized trademark (registered to the Tontine Group) which is derived from the equivalent common Scandinavian term dyne and popularized by the retailer IKEA in the 1970s. Originally the term continental quilt was the standard name used across Australia.

In Pakistan, duvets are known as ralli quilts, and are mostly used in the southern province of Sindh.

In the US, confusion often occurs as the word "duvet" is sometimes used to refer to a comforter cover rather than the down blanket itself. For example, this is how the term is used by a large retailer:"For those of you enjoying a down comforter, or even just looking for a change for your bedroom, a duvet could be the perfect answer. Since you will be placing your comforter inside the duvet, it is important that the appropriate size be selected." — Bed, Bath and Beyond, Sizing Up Your Bedroom.[1]
The term "Duvet day" is used in some countries to describe an allowance of one or more days a year when employees can simply phone in and say that they are not coming in to work, even though they have no leave booked and are not ill. The provision of this benefit became fashionable in the late 1990s with many larger companies in the UK.[2]

Back from the Hills of Beverly - all it takes is one trip down there to remind me why I NEVER go there.  They have so screwed up the streets with one-way deals that it is impossible to easily get to where you need to get to.  I parked five blocks away just to avoid actually having to deal with any of it.  So, I had a nice little walk and did my stuff and now I am back home for a bit.

I been listening to Academy Award wining and nominated songs. I have to wonder how some of these songs ever got nominated, I assume some of them are because who wrote them. They old guard like to nominate and vote for the old guard. Which explains songs from The Stepmother, Whiffs and Half a House.

But how could they nominate "My Wishing Doll" only 30 seconds of the song is heard and that thirty seconds begins somewhere in the middle and abruptly ends when someone walks into the room.

I think the song and dance part was only like 2 hours. It was so odd. Who knew that they would prepare a spectacle for kids graduating from daycare. Who knew you could even graduate from daycare.

Everyone was wearing white. The girls wore white dresses. And the boys wore white shirts, beige pants/shorts and green ties.

The highlight was the last song number. They stopped the show for 2 minutes and the kids put on leis. My niece and one other girl changed into their bathing suits and authentic Filipino grass skirts and flowers on their heads.  And they sang a song called Pearly Shells.  Basically it was my niece and this other girl singing and everyone else in the background sort of singing/swaying.

My niece is a big singer and dancer. And it was the most hysterical thing. She was swaying back and forth like a hula dancer while shouting out her song. It was definitely the best number.

HWHC told me he's going to be doing some plumbing work on one of his restoration projects this weekend....pumbing you say???  I happen to need to have a little repair in the basement bathroom before the big hoard of bike riders stay in my yard in July.  He said it would only take him 20 minutes to do a job like that...I said "good, then you'll do it for me?"    He said yes.   I like this guy more all the time, lol.

They all got diplomas and corsages and medals. All for daycare graduation?  It was pretty cute though.  I think they really prepared these kids well for kindergarten. Although sadly only 1 other kid out of 20 is going to the same school.

He is difficult, but not in a bad way, just in a "things could be done a lot easier" way.  But he knows it, so it's not quite so bad.

Richard is off to Oxford to rehearse with the Men's Glee Club Alumni for tomorrow night's concert, which Rob and I will attend together.  Fortunately, they're rehearsing and performing an air-conditioned auditorium.  In previous years, they've done the concert in a tent - too hot & humid for that.

I am still alive.. rattled and have seen WAY too many warnings, storm clouds and pictures of tornados hit too close to family and firends...

The weather adventure started yesterday morning...

Very heavy rain fell just to the west of Fargo in WEst FArgo and Horace to the north of North Fargo affecting Harwood, ND and Georgetown, MN. That area got nearly 4 inches of rain in less than two hours. However, at the airport they got less than an inch. Go figure!

After that Storms formed one after another and warnings left and right throughout ND and MN. SD also had their fair share. However, between part of north eastern ND and northwestern MN there were over 25 twisters. Several did significant damage and sadly several people lost their lives. NWS is saying this is the worst break out of Tornados  they have seen this far north. There was a lot of torrential rainfall with amounts ranging from 3 to 8 inches in the areas where the storms were training. Some of the areas that got rain didnot need any more rain since they have had heavy rain since late may.

Wadena and Mentor, MN were severely damaged.  The C-Store was destroyed in Mentor however, two women survived by hugging the toilet.

Here is an article on teh Wadena Tornado  http://www.inforum.com/event/article/id/282223/

the front page of the Forum and Grand forks Herald have more stories on the adventures of Mother Nature being in a VERY BAD mood....

http://www.inforum.com/
http://www.grandforksherald.com/

They are suspecting the damage was possibly caused by more than one twister.

One tornado passed within a few miles of my mother's house near Grnad Forks. Many of relatives have very soggy and in some respects damaged fields and farm buildings.

Needless to say it was a stressful day and night.

Years & years ago Keith brought home a duvet and duvet cover from his first business trip to Germany.  It was lighter weight while warmer than the comforters sold here.  Sometimes I would see stores that sold duvet's and the duvet's were all from Europe & similar to ours.  Now they are popular as are comforters that look like those early duvet's.

The technical term is not chili dogs.  They are coney islands...or in the Cincinnati vernacular just a "coney". And they are unlike any other chili dog you may eat.  Cincinnati chili is a thing unto itself.  I believe Ginny and Elmore would agree.

I just had a very weird phone call.  The caller I.D. said it was an unknown caller, but I picked it up anyway.  Of course, I then had a recording saying that all of staff were busy helping others, but please hold on.  Again, I normally don't wait for the next available salesperson, but before I could hang up the salesperson came on the line

So far, not terribly weird.  Just wait.

The salesman says may I please speak to.................. And then he says my ex-wife's name.  Not my last name, but the very unusual last name that she had before we were married.  I have not seen the woman in twenty years, nor have I even spoken to her in sixteen years.  And today someone is calling my house asking for her?  ??? ???  And I have an unlisted phone number.

The salesman says may I please speak to.................. And then he says my ex-sife's name.  Not my last name, but the very unusual last name that she had before we were married.  I have not seen the woman in twenty years, nor have I even spoken to her in sixteen years.  And today someone is calling my house asking for her?  ??? ???  And I have an unlisted phone number.

Do you know where your ex-wife is?  Did they tell you how they got your number?

I was so freaked out when he said her name that, first, I made him repeat it, and secondly, I said, "I haven't been married to the broad in twenty five years, so she sure as Hell is not here!"  Then, I hung up.

Thanks for the continuing wishes and vibes, we are getting along fine.  Mom and sis and I went to the mortuary and got that all taken care of today.  I began planning the funeral Liturgy and planned the readings and put together the intentions and contacted my favorite people to come and sing with me on Tuesday morning for the funeral.  The music is almost planned.  Tonight, it's the second to last performance of the "plant" show and afterward a few of us are going for pie.  Very exciting.

Iraqi Interpreter for U.S. Military Murdered by Family for Refusing to Quit Job
Published June 18, 2010

BAGHDAD -- An Iraqi interpreter for the U.S. military was gunned down on Friday by his son and nephew north of the capital after he refused their demands to quit his job, a police official said.

Hameed al-Daraji was shot in the chest in his house in Samarra, 60 miles north of Baghdad, police Lt. Emad Muhsin said.

Muhsin said al-Daraji worked as a contractor and translator for the U.S. military since 2003 against the wishes of his family. His relatives were constantly fighting with al-Daraji to give up working with the Americans, but he ignored their pleas, he added.

Al-Daraji's son and nephew were arrested after the attack and confessed to being members of an Al Qaeda group that sanctioned the killing, Muhsin said, adding that police were searching for a second son suspected of being an accomplice.

Iraqis working for the U.S. military in the country have been targets of extremist groups who view them as traitors and collaborators with an invading country. But it is rare for family members to kill a relative because of his or her employment with the Americans in Iraq.
...

Which explains why it's so important to support Mike Barnum, et al. in their efforts to help resettle Iraqui translators.

Last night's first run through of BLITHE SPIRIT ran almost three hours......I shall be cutting the play today.

Cut the first half of Act I; Scene 1.

Or you could pick up the pace.  Any Noel Coward that's running three hours is going too slow.  Remember:  Brittle.  Light.  Fast.   Make 'em do it at rain tempo.

I had forgotten that I had the second 2 hours of the BBC production of EMMA to finish, so I just did. This has become, after the BBC-A&E PRIDE AND PREJUDICE with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, my favorite Austen adaptation. The set has more scenes than the cut edition shown on Masterpiece Theatre and I've fallen in love with Samuel Sim's score for the series.

I'm fourth on the waiting list at the library for it, so it should come in next week. Looking forward to it. I loved Romola in "Daniel Deronda" and "Amazing Grace." Glad to see she's getting good work.
