Title: APPLES AND HONEY
Post by: bk on September 28, 2020, 12:05:29 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had both apples and honey for a sweet New Year, and now it is time for you to post until the apples and honey cows come home.

TOD:  The Ravel in G, especially for that dreamy slow middle movement.

Post by: singdaw on September 28, 2020, 03:46:36 AM
TOD: The Bernstein Age of Anxiety, which bk mentioned. It's called his Symphony No 2, but it's really a piano concerto. The masque movement near the end is a wonder.

TOD: There are a number of wonderful piano/orchestra pieces by Howard Hanson that don't quite rise to the level of concerto that are nonetheless wonderful. Mosaics being one.

TOD (from August 22, 2020)
Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor
Grieg: Piano Concerto in A-minor
Ravel: Piano Concerto in G
Gershwin: Piano Concerto in F

Today I will add this.
There are a couple of piano and orchestra pieces of which I am also fond:
Liszt: Hungarian Fantasy and Totentanz
Rachmaninov:  Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini
Dohnány: Variations on a Nursery Song

Last night we watched the Nova documentary Cat Tales, which was really interesting.  I found the whole history of DNA investigation into the evolution of the domestic house cat from the African Wildcat and how these 10,000 year old house cats traveled from Egypt throughout thew world fascinating.  Thatch seemed interested in looking at all the cats, Stella and Annabelle slept.

Tonight we will watch Dog Tales.

Here’s the description:

In his new one man show, Blood & Holly, Jaston Williams remembers Christmas in childhood as a warped hybrid of Toyland and Franco’s Spain. Meet the elderly sisters without any eyebrows, the house cat driven crazy by Christmas decorations and a gift list that includes rubber knives, moist towelettes and teeth. Known nationally as the co-author and co-star of the award-winning plays in the Greater Tuna cycle, Jaston Williams will leave you in stitches.

I knew Jaston and Joe Sears when they first did Greater Tuna in New York in the early 1980s.  They were both delightful.  When I was in production, Nov. 1991, with Babes In Toyland for the Houston Grand Opera, Joe and Jaston were performing Tuna Christmas in Houston and we all had apartments in the same building.  I haven't seen either of them since then.

Good afternoon. Just got through 2 Zoom classes with 6th and 7th grade from the pipe organ in the choir loft at the church.  I guess they went ok.  I'm a very good cheater when it comes to the organ, no one will ever know I've never had a proper lesson.  LOL

Speaking of lessons.  As a pianist, I'm sad to say that I've never learned a piano concerto.  I guess there's still time.  However, one of my favorite pieces for piano and orchestra (and chorus) is Beethovens Choral Fantasy.  I started working on the piano solo a long time ago, part of me would like to take the time to re-visit it at some point.

DR Jane, when you say you can't find liquid soap that you can tolerate is this due to smell?

Mostly, and sensitivity on my skin to the ingredients.  I like the Method foam, but except for the coconut it is the smell that bothers me.  Keith is using the ones I don't like, and then I try to avoid him when he is washing his hands-lol

It is the same with hand sanitizers.  I do ok with Germ-X which I have been able to get again.
Title: Re: APPLES AND HONEY

Oh, the bar soap is Yardley Oatmeal & almond soap.  I like both the feel and smell, though I preferred it before they added the almond.  The liquid version is impossible to get these days.

I have to dig through some stuff and pull out that Sloppy Joe recipe.

In the meantime, guess what I made today! :)

It wasn’t planned. I had a bit more than a pound of ground beef that needed to be used, and there was one can of Manwich in the cupboard. So what’s a guy to do? I added the Manwich slowly to see if I could get “just enough” mixed in to make these hold together more solidly. And it worked. Of course you don’t want them too dry, either, so just add slowly till you’re there.

DR George - thanks for a shot finally of the collage for your Dad. It looks wonderful, and like it was done with care and love.

To truly appreciate it I had to wait and view the photo on my computer.  I second Singdaw's comments.

Thanks, Jane.

93 degrees - yeah, that's really normal as we head into October.  Tomorrow's supposed to be 100.  Yeah, that's normal.

It's the NEW normal. ::)

About to break the fast.  It's supposed to be sundown, which it would've been thirty minutes ago if they didn't stupidly extend Daylight Savings Time every four seconds.  So, sundown, for me, is 6:00.

Opened my birthday presents. Got a bottle of blackberry moonshine and some bourbon-barrel ale. And for some reason, I got two jars of gefilte fish. Scratching my head at that one.

Nice gifts except the one you are scratching your head over ;D

No DVD's, however, I wanted to take some cd's from my father's collection but my sister took them all when she locked me out of his place.

That's terrible! :(

Oh, so much more than just the few CD's.  Oh well.

I had an enjoyable book discussion meeting on the lawn this afternoon.  Enjoyable except for the bee stinging me.  Fortunately the stinger didn't stay in so my finger is barely swollen.  It just hurts a little but nothing like the normal pain.

Speaking of Christmas, I do hope that it's a somewhat toned down one this year. I know many retailers feel they must be ultra aggressive, but with so many people out of work I think it'd be kinder to give some of it a rest. I've noticed that since Covid I've received fewer catalogs. Electronics are selling, but many other items don't seem to be, whether in-store or online.
Title: Re: APPLES AND HONEY

There are a lot of products now that are hard or impossible to find in stock anywhere.

I fear there is going to be a lot more of this in the coming fall and winter, alas.

Agreed that many items are difficult or hard to find. Covid supplies -- masks, gloves, disinfectant -- are easy to find now from my sources. I noticed that some supplements --vitamin C, Sambucol, products that help the lungs -- are still out of stock at some retailers.

Sing, are you thnking that cold and flu season will bring more shortages?

Listening to Bernstein/Entremont do Bartok - excellent performances undone by perhaps the worst producing/engineering job I've ever heard on a Columbia album.  And who do we have to thank for that?  Why, the ego-ridden then-neophyte producer named Thomas Z. Shepard - he'd go on to become a cast album producer but should never have been allowed near a classical album.  Where was the great John McClure, one wonders?  The first movement has to be heard to be believed - the balances are so wacky it's almost comical.  The band sounds like it's in another room and the piano, you know, the focal instrument in a piano concerto, sounds like it's in a closet somewhere.  Not Sony's fault as there would be nothing to do with such a botched recording job.

The last episode of Conversations With Jack will be airing this week.

I am posting a link because it is an interview of ME!  And some Dear Reader may be curious about what I have to say.

I will say that I am wearing the WRONG shirt that makes me look even fatter than I am.....oh well.....

What sort of shirt makes a person look more slender? Were you thinking vertical stripes?

I shall return to the interview at a later date.
