Easy to pick out my 2003 highlights.  My student teaching was (mostly) a wonderful experience, teaching choir for 11 weeks, grades 5-12.  Got to work with some great kids, had a fantastic supervising teacher, and was part of a great staff at the school for 3 months.

The other big highlight was my first visit to NYC.  My mom and I spent 4 days there in late June, as my college graduation present.  Saw Urinetown, Hairspray, and Gypsy while we were there, and explored all over Manhattan.  95 degrees and 95% humidity, but we didn't care!  It was a great time.

Lowlight would have to be not finding a full-time teaching job this year.  With state budgets being what they were, it was a lousy year to be entering the music education market in the Northwest.  Where teachers were retiring, the districts were spreading that job among a few other current employees rather than hiring on a new teacher.  And Oregon was even worse off than we were in Washington, so a number of experienced Oregon teachers were being squeezed out of their jobs and snagged up any actual openings up here.  Ah well, this cycles every few years, so hopefully things will turn around and there will actually be jobs out there for me next year!  In the meantime, I'm surprised how much I actually enjoy substitute teaching, so all is relatively good.

Hopes for 2004?  Well, beyond all the standard (but still quite sincere) health and happiness for friends and family stuff, I wouldn't mind finding a job... preferably in a town where there are actually unmarried women in their 20's to be found!  Wenatchee, WA is a terrific place to grow up or to raise a family, but not a place to be young and single, I can tell you that!

Well, that's quite enough from me!  How do I ever expect to reach God-dom with such long posts instead of numerous small ones? :D

Here's to Jed.  May his eight inches be happy ones!   ;D

The good of 2003: We were joined by Bonnie and Buster, and we made the big move.

The bad of 2003: One of the worst spells of clinical depression I've ever had.  Blech.

The hope for 2004: That I get a job.  Quick!

Living in a town with unmarried women in their 20's around would certainly help that!  ;)

Hello DR's - just returned from NYC... saw "Taboo" - which was fabulous, "Take Me Out" which was fabulous, "Forbidden Bway" which was fabulous, "The Musical of Musicals - The MusicaL" which was fabulous and "The Boy From Oz" which was fabulous!  More later as it would be a good time to get some rest.

December 31st???  :o

Yes, I shall be working today and then heading to Chicago for a party!!!  I will I celebrate??  Yes I will!!!

The bad part is not being HERE for the REAL party!!  :'(

Hmmmmmmmm.....highlights of 2003....hmmmmmm....not too many.  Not that it was a BAD year.  I got a new computer, made a couple of new friends.

And I don't know if it's a highlight or not, but I finally left a place I had been for 25 years - even though I loved doing theatre there, and it IS part of my identity.  I am gone and now feel a bit lost....but I will move on.

I hope in 2004 to do some writing and to get more involved with the professional theatre where I had done a bit of work and who always needed me in the summer....when I couldn't work with them.  So....now I can.

And of course HHW has been a highlight for me.  What a lot of wonderful people...starting with Mr BK.

Special thanks to him, Mr Mark Bakalor, Craig, Juliana, and all those who work behind the scenes to make HHW go!

Happy New Year!  ;D

Well, it's already 11am here in London as we count down our last two days across the pond. This was certainly a highlight of 2003. Also, turning 50 and treating Ant and me to a wonderful vacation in Key West was a highlight. Meeting some of our dear readers was also a joy.

I hope in 2004 that Anthony has more success as a performer. I hope that my job continues on it's current course (I can't complain too much about it since for the past 6 years I have been able to take the entire month of December off as vacation) and I hope to achieve my God-Like Status soon in January when I return to work and I am able to post with more frequency.

Love and Happy New Year to you all as we get 2004 at least 5 or more hours ahead of everyone.

This is probably my last post for 2003.

I need to think about today's subject.

Just read the rest of  yesterday's notes.  Great pet pics and great drag/porn names.  I always thought it was your pet's name and your mother maiden's name.  If so, my  name would be Fifi Kelly or Fifi Colter (if I used the name of the street).  My goldfish was named Fifi.  Either one would be a respectable drag or stripper name.  This whole subject came up once a number of years ago after my sister had seen something about it on Oprah,  So, there I was at a family gathering listening to my father, brother, brother-in-law, nephew and the rest of my family memebrs talking about what their drag names would be.  Talk about a surreal experience.

I thought I'd share a Christmas memory from years ago.  It was the year I got my first clock radio.  The clock radio was on the nightstand right next to my pillow. Setting it up that night was difficult because it was late at night, and I had trouble with the reception, so I turned the station to something I thought was decent and turned up the volume.  The next morning had Ethel Merman singing "Everything's Coming Up Roses" at full volume.  I love Merman, but it was not a pleasant way to start the day.  It made me laugh at the time, and still makes me laugh that of all the choices it could have been that it was that!  Being blasted out of bed by Merman in your right ear is something you never forget!

I'll post later about 2003 and 2004.

And I think I'll stick with my drag name and not even try for a rap name.  I think we should all have a party where we come dressed as what we picture our porn/drag/stripper personas would look like.  I noticed some of you did not give what your name would be.

And yes, Jason, buy the Michael Buble CD.  But don't have them mail it to you.  Get it in person just to be on the safe side.

Yes TOMOVOZ enjoy "The Full Monty!"

DRKERRY your story reminded me of my friend John who worked at a local radio station WREB.  They would sign on at 5 am with the local farm report.   :P

He decided that he would really give the farmers a treat and opened his farm report each day with a cut from the Ethel Merman Disco Album - which would continue to play under the day's beef, corn, oats, wheat, pork, barley, and other price projections!   ;D

Happy New Year to BK and all DRs.  And BK, no matter what topic you pick for your next novel it will appeal to us.  In fact it's interesting that the two best works of fiction I read in 2003 were both by people who became famous in "show biz" before writing novels: BK's KRITZERLAND and Rupert Holmes' WHERE THE TRUTH LIES.

Does any DR know if Brent is still in CHICAGO or not?  The display ad in today's Times features a big picture of him, but the ABC listing has Bernard Dotson in the spot where the actor playing Billy is usually listed.

Hi all!

OK, I've been errant & truant a l;ot these past couple of months, but the end of the year has kept me quite busy at the office.

Highlights of 2003 - as a performer, participating in the making of "Jeepers Creepers" is on the top of my list.  Meeting so many of our HHW crew, including Michael, Craig, Susan, Jose and Jason, plus dinner at the famous Joe Allen's with the gang, was great.  My thanks for bk for allowing me to take part.  And to Guy Haines for allowing me to take his picture ;)

Seeing "Take Me Out" in on the list.  Performing in "The Music Man" is too.

Joining my wife in celebrating 2+ cancer free years, however, was the best thing in '03.

Pending Highlights of 2004 - Performing in "The Melody Lingers On...The Music of Irving Berlin" in mid January (if you're in the NY metro-LI area and are interested in seeing the show, please email me off list for ticket info).  Tickets to see "The Boy from OZ' in late February.

And. of course, participating here at HHW.

So to bk, Craig, Mark, Donald, Juliana and all my pals at HHW - may 2004 bring you nothing but health, happiness and lots of fulfillment, both personal and professional!

Lots of good wishes to all the DRs on this last day of 2003!

Let's see...it was a good year! Best things were getting my giganta-cat Freddy, having my 4 hour lunch with actresses Diana (Reform School Girl) Darrin, and Laurie (Attack of the Puppet People) Mitchell when I went to Los Angeles as well as meeting Ms. Carolyn (Hot Rod Girl) Kearney. Discovering Bollywood movies. Getting a few things published and interviewing some fascinating people. And just enjoying another year of my friends, family, and of course my HHW buddies!

Title: Re:THE NEW AGE NEW YEAR
Post by: Jason on December 31, 2003, 07:32:46 AM
Let's see...the best and worst, huh? Well...

The worst: Finding out bad news about my brother; My dad was laid off from his job; Those lean weeks when I was barely able to pay my bills; living with some of the folks from Bucks County Playhouse for three months.; Losing more mail than I've actually received.; THE MICE.

The best: My dad has started a new business and seems to be doing well...he only needs four or five more clients to make him feel financially where he wants to be; I made it through the rain--even though I had a few rough weeks, with hard work (and the generosity, love and encouragement from my friends here at HHW), I made it past those rough weeks and I was even able to afford some decent Christmas gifts for my loved ones; I had few panic attacks this year than last; I finally got work as an actor this year--three times!! MOBY DICK, Bucks County Playhouse and West Virginia Public Theatre, I thank you!; Seeing some of the best (and worst) live theatre in the world, and most of it for free. Who could ask for anything more?; Meeting up with many of my friends from HHW.com, including the Big K. himself, and a truly wonderful time with DRs MusicGuy and Kerry (and of course DRs Ben and Anthony). Good times were also had with DRs Susan, Jose, Craig (I'm so glad you moved up here, even though I never see you), Maya, LC, Andrea, Emily, WEL and Ray, Juliana, Phil and MDS. Hopefully I'll be adding more names to that list in the coming years.; Getting some of my shifts back at the Met, for which I am ridiculously grateful.; Recording Jeepers Creepers.; Receiving a surprise gift in the mail (yes, this package actually arrived)--BOTH of the Kritzer novels which, per instructions from the Dear Dear Reader who sent them to me, had been signed by our esteemed BK.; Making some wonderful new friends at work; and finally, HHW.com.

So there it is...my best and worst list for the year. Overall, I'd say it's been a pretty good one.

I'm working at MTI today until 1:00, at which time I will meet up wtih my friend, Jennifer, and see a movie. I don't know WHICH movie, but a movie nonetheless, and the we shall hie ourselves to the Metropolitan Opera for the New Year's Eve Gala, which will include Ms. Barbara Cook's Met Debut in the third act of THE MERRY WIDOW. It should be quite fun. :) There are veeeery few people gathering in Times Square today...I'm kind of surprised. I mean, I know it's early, but last year people started lining up the night before!

Oh, and did anyone read in the paper yesterday that Ms. Elaine Paige will be playing Mrs. Lovett in New York City Opera's SWEENEY TODD this spring? I have to see it....HAVE TO!

Dear esteemed, slimming, year-ending BK --

Thank you for lots of fascinating topics, provocative thoughts, interesting bits of theatre and music related info and anecdotes, both of the SUPERB Kritzer books, great conversations at Dan Tana's, Musso & Frank's, and DuPar's, and for your providing of lots and lots of light hearted laughs and chuckles while reading this site and participating.

And my thanks to the most unique, fun, creative, diverse, imagination-fueled, caring, and accepting bunch of wacko zanies that ever filled up a "Living Room" or a cookie jar !!

The year 2003 has certainly had its fill of challenges and sad times for DR Kerry and I, and all of the DRs here and the guapo Mr. BK have been gifts to keep some levity and lightness and perspective in front of us both.

Thank you Bruce, and thank you to a very long list of wonderful dear readers !!

May 2004 treat us all a little nicer and more gently.   :D

Good morning!

Well, I slept in... a little.  Got the last two loads of laundry going already (one washing, one drying), made breakfast, played with my niece (who did not cry(!) again(!!!)) - still makes me so happy that she "knows" me now, washed some dishes and made my bed.  Whew!

Oh, and before I forget, my drag name would be: Princess Kennedy.  Hmmm...

As for the highlights and the lowlights...

Highlights:
- AUSTRALIA!  What a wonderful place!  What wonderful people!  Meeting Tom & Colin was very special too!  And my travel mates on that tour were a couple of swells, great people - and they know their tequila!
-Losing 35 pounds! Finally!*
-Being gainfully employed for most of the year - well, enough, that I did not have to take a "day job" this year, or even have to consider one (the importance of finally learning to budget!)  Being involved in projects that I was really interested in and enjoyed working on and learned a great deal from.
-Being in NYC during the blackout - I had fun!
-Getting closer to my nieces and nephew both figuratively and literally.  Since they're all living in the DC area now, and since I've been working a lot of up here this year, I've had more time to spend with them.  It's great being, "Uncle Jojo".
-Being a part of Jeepers Creepers.  Thanks again, BK, for inviting me to be a part of the project.
-Being able to be home in Richmond for a few months, AND working, AND managing to have enough time to have a social life.  People are so much fun!  I made a lot of new friends in my adopted home town this year.
-Having HHW as place to come back to time and again - whether on a daily basis, or after a few weeks away.  What a great mix of DRs there are on this board.  Thanks for sharing your stories and life, and thank you for letting me share mine.
-One very personal highlight for me: Getting closer to my ex, Steve.  We've been "apart" for about a year and half now - after being together for about three and a half years.  I won't rehash all of it, but our break-up was a very non-break-up, very amicable, very adult.  But, we were apart for a while.  The couple of times we've been able to spend together this past year have been really nice.  He truly is my best friend, and it's been nice having my best friend back by my side again.  We still care about each other very much.  -And he'll be coming up to DC tonight to watch Camelot, and be my "date" for the party afterwards.  And we'll be enjoying five theatre-filled(!!!!!) days in NYC in January - wow, in just two weeks!

The lowlights for 2003 were few and far between - at least nothing really sticks in my head right now, which is a good thing, I guess.  I did put on about 12-15 pounds of the weight I had lost over the past year - I REALLY liked Australia!  ;)  And I did have some major car repair$ in Augu$t.  I guess the major thing for me was losing touch with some friends this past year due to work, schedules, travels, and the general craziness of daily life.  And one of my best-est friends moved from DC to LA this past summer.  I miss him.

As for 2004
-Things are continue to look up.  I have gigs lined up throughout the whole year - and maybe even into 2005 already!  -That actually kind of scares me.
-I hope to re-lose the 12-15 pounds I've put back on - and I've already gotten started on that resolution this past week.
-I hope to touch base with some of the people I've lost contact with this past year - I'm planning to use some of my downtime in January to send out my "Christmas" cards... for the first time in three years!
-I'm hoping my niece, Alyssa, will continue to grow more comfortable with me as she gets older - I would realy love to spend a day baby-sitting her.  But for a one-year old, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt.  ;)
-I wish safe travels for my brother, Mike, and his family, when they head to Puerto Rico this weekend for a few weeks to visit my sister-in-law's family.
-I hope to continue to grow, to enjoy life, to be awed, to be lesss jaded(!).
-And I'm looking forward to my new apartment/house/whatever with my new potential roommate.  Although, the move could turn out to be a lowlight of next year's list - let's hope not.
-Oh, and some DRs may have intimated this from my recent posts - or even from this one - maybe I'll be ditching the "ex" moniker when it comes to mentioning Steve.  :)  Well, I should anyway - he's my friend!  But there is definitely something in the air... again.  (Take that as a veiled Sondheim reference, if you like.)

Well, time for me to get my stuff organized.  I have another long day ahead of me - rehearsal at 2:00, then the show tonight, the the party.. then I'm actually heading back to Richmond for the night since I won't be back down there until the middle of next week - let's hope the drunk drivers stay off the road, and that the state troopers are doing their job.  I'll be training back tomorrow afternoon for tomorrow night's show - no rest for the weary.  So, if I don't make it back before "then"...

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Party like it's 199.. well, 2003!  2004 Look Out!

High points of the year definitely include playing Bruce Ismay in TITANIC this past fall. I didn't have high hopes for the show since getting it fully cast took so long (finding young male tenors was an endless process for the director).

Coming to HHW and meeting so many great people definitely qualifies as a high point in the year.

Low points: well, failing to get cast in two shows I really wanted to do: TEN LITTLE INDIANS and SHE LOVES ME weren't very pleasant experiences, but what doesn't kill us only makes us stronger, and both those events certainly put starch in my spine.

Having a potential relationship with an appealing man kind of peter out was also a downer. No one's fault really; it just wasn't meant to be, I guess.

Looking forward to a great 2004 at HHW, and a BIG, BIG thank you to Mr. Mark, Administrator Craig, and Big Daddy BK for making the site what it is.

Happy New Year, Dear Readers!  May you all enjoy great health, joy, prosperity and love in 2004!

2003 low points for me:

Losing my job definitely tops the list.  The frustration I've had to deal with finding new work, too.  And thinking Roller (my 12 1/2 year old cocker spaniel) was a goner when I found him passed out in my backyard a couple of weeks ago.

2003 high points for me:

I had three terrific leisure trips this year.  First was a week in Maui.  (My first time there.)  Just thinking about my having the Blue Pool, which sits below Angel Falls, all to myself for an au natural swim reduces my blood pressure, I am sure, by a good ten points.  Then a week in New York for my 25th college reunion.  Also, almost a week in the splendor of Yosemite National Park.

I attended a large number of live performances of all varieties (theater, opera, concerts, cabaret, dance, etc.), many of which were quite memorable.

Movie-going became a religion for me this year, and I've enjoyed many of the motion picture entertainments I've seen.

I appreciate the support that so many people have given me during my job search, ranging from good friends and colleagues I've known for a long time to complete strangers I connected with by way of networking.

I am grateful to have HHW as an anchor in my life.  It is entertaining, educational, and enabled me to virtually meet a great number of very interesting people.  I've had the pleasure of meeting several of these folks in the flesh, which has been most enjoyable!

My hopes for 2004:

Good health, continued enjoyment of life, never taking the God-given gifts I have for granted.

A job.  A good one, that I will look forward to going to each day.

More live performance.  More movies.  More interesting leisure travel adventures.

Deepened friendships with those I already know, and coming to know new friends, too.

Peace on earth, the eradication of world hunger, and a Democrat elected president in November.

Happy New Years Eve!

I'm at Leslie's apartment typing this, about to head over to my grandmother's house (almost an ITW reference!), but I just wanted to post and say that the Golddiggers meeting was very, very nice.  We didn't meet any millionaires, but it was still a lot of fun.  Leslie, Andrea, Emily, their friend Robin, and I met at Ollies for a loverly dinner and as Jason said, he stopped by for a few minutes and is just a darling.  All the girls are just wonderful company, and a lot of laughs were had.

Leslie did take pics with her digital camera (I sooo want one), and I'm sure they will be posted within the next few days.  I just can't guarantee that I will look good in any of them.

Wicked was even better than I expected it to be.  I don' t really have time now to write a full-length review, but it was just spectacular, and I have NEVER seen an audience that enthusiastic and appreciative...it was amazing.  Leslie and I are Kristin people, while we appreciate Idina and all that.  She was certainly quite something as Elphie, but something about her voice just annoys me.  Kristin was just darling, and ah, that voice!

We were supposed to go to Marie's Crisis after the show, but when I volunteered to show my ID at the bar, the guy asked for ALL our IDs, and since not all of us were 21 (love you anyway, Emily), we kind of got thrown out, hehe.  We went to a restaurant for drinks (where the same thing happened), but finally we found a bar that wasn't quite as stringent about IDing, and Maya got a little tipsy, hehe.  I AM 21 now though, so I am entitled now and again, right?

A great big WB and hug to Swishy, and I loved the pic from last night!  I'll try to check in later, but if not HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Are DR dogs capable of high vanity?  High anxiety, sure, we’ve all seen the quick-I-gotta-tinkle panic that takes control of their here-and-now like an enlarged prostate sitting on a DR male's engorged bladder.  But high vanity?

Ever since viewing her photo on HHW last night, Echo has been positively rabid about the inadequacies of that picture: bad hair day, bad bandana, right-side profile, matzo brei chin stain.  So, DRs, please forgive this excess but I must post two "acceptable" photos.

The first photo (below) is from a set of publicity stills taken by PBS-San Francisco affiliate, KQED, prior to the start of filming the (now) children’s classic, "Jo-Jo the Dog-Faced Reindeer.”

Well, even Merman had critics!  I'd never heard of Menzel before "Wicked," but she totally blows me away!

:)

I am so glad you loved the show!  It's an audience-pleaser, that's for sure!

The more I listen to the cast album, the more appreciative I am of Stephen Schwartz's determination not to change much from the San Francisco performances.  There are wonderful songs in this show and not a one of them, to my mind, is extraneous or unnecessary.

I am totally blown away by "The Wizard and I," "Popular," "I'm Not That Girl," "Defying Gravity," "For Good."

I must be off very shortly -- have to pick up Miss Vickie from the vet/kennel, and then to the post office to pick up all my "held" mail!

And I'm considering venturing into my office to pick up any mail that arrived there for me.   Since it's NYE, I doubt many folks will be there.

My brother's name is Josh. He's the youngest...I'm the oldest.

I will be getting some shots of theatre marquees today after work, including the WICKED marquee outside the Gershwin, and I will post them here for whoever is interested. Any other photographic requests before I leave (in 45 minutes)? By the way, I won't be able to post these pics until after the show tonight...

I think people thrive in a pressure-cooker atmosphere in TV.  I don't, nor do I go there.  I just get the work done, calmly, and I think it baffles people sometime that I'm not crazed about it.   Not that there isn't stress sometimes, but I see no reason to get crazed because whatever amount of time you have to do the work is the amount of time you have to do the work, so why add tsuris on top of it.  That is how I feel, anyway.

It's not even ten yet and I feel like I've been here hours.  Still hopeful to get out of here earlier than normal.

Post by: Jay on December 31, 2003, 10:08:07 AM
It's not just television.  I've been in plenty of environments where if people put half the energy they put into creating a pressure cooker atmosphere instead into planning/forging ahead with a project/solving problems/etc., things would have been far more productive and far less stressful.

2003  actually did not have a lot of highs or lows, but stayed on a pretty even keel for me, which was just fine.  Highlight, of course, would be adding Mr. Bruce Kimmel to our array of fascinating friends.

In 2004, like Bruce, I hope to explore a little novel writing and just more personal writing in general...or rather writing for me.

Everybody have a safe, Happy New Year.

Ok, here is a topic. What is everyone's favorite Narda Onyx performance! LOL!

Mine would be her thrilling role as the offspring of Dr. Frankenstein in Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter (co-starring Cal Bolder as Hank), followed. of course, by her appearance as the foreign spy girl in that memorable episode of 77 Sunset Strip. LOL!

Hey, Narda, SAG is looking for you!

Ok, your turn!

I have only seen Jesse James vs. Frankenstein's Daughter once....so I guess that would be it.  As for SAG looking for her, I reminded of what a columnist wrote to me when I was trying to find Allison Hayes in 1965:  "With credits like those, perhaps she is in hiding."

I also hope to be cast in a play or two and work harder toward getting my Equity Card - since I only have a few hours to go!  ;D

That for me personally of course.  ;)

In the larger scheme of things:  I hope for good health for all my family members and friends, great prosperity for those who work so very hard, and greater understanding between individuals and nations.  :D

Oh....and a nice new copy of Kritzer Time.

I have no brothers or sisters.  I am a lonely child.

High points of 2003:  Seeing "Wicked" and "An Evening With Dame Edna." Also, the revelation that there were NO weapons of mass destruction in Iraq -- the sole excuse upon which the Bush Administration justified spending billions of dollars on the "war."

Low points of 2003: The invasion of Iraq under false pretenses. Arnold Schwarzenegger's "election" to the governorship of California.

Hopes for 2004:  No more U.S. military/civilian deaths in Iraq.  A viable Democratic candidate for president.  The abolition of the monstrously anti-American "Patriot's Act." A restoration of some world respect for the USA.  A surprisingly good performance as governor by Arnold Schwarzenegger.  I'd love to stop thinking that the Homeland Security Agency's frequent terrorism threat levels are being issued as political ploys rather than honest-to-goodness reasons to be alert.  Also, I'd appreciate it if the Bush Administration would stop sullying the the honor of the military by using it as a rallying tool every time Bush's ratings drop.

I think I had TWO celebrity sightings yesterday...I didn't even recognize Brian Boitano until Jason pointed him out (and I got "What Would Brian Boitano Do?" from the South Park movie stuck in my head).  I think I also saw Tyne Daly near Madame Tussaud's...or at least a woman who looked like her twin!

Ron--I agree about the Wicked songs...it's a wonderful score, even if it lacks subtlety in places (and I'm not a fan of "As Long as You're Mine").  I think I've listened to "Defying Gravity" about 20 times and I'm still not tired of it.

Or, you know what is even more fun?  Stop a celebrity, ask if you can get a picture, then hand them the camera, and then you pose for them.  I guarantee they will remember you.

LOL, that's brilliant!

Oh, and the HHW Hussies learned a big rule last night... never offer to show your ID!  Unless the place cards you at the door, you'll often have no problem at all getting them underage types in with you, but once they see one ID, they usually want to see them all.

I say "usually" because of the numerous times out with my friend Ken where he gets carded and I don't (I'm 24, he's 36 :D).

Glad the NYC trip is going well... can't wait to see pictures!

Happy, happy new year, one and all!

Some of my wishes for 2004 (others are too private):
Health and happiness for my daughter, of course.
Lots of wonderful new writing projects. And that certain scripts which have been sitting around waiting for fairy dust get produced (A POEM FOR LILI; PURLIE'S SUMMER; OUT OF THE DUST, to name a few).
That the script which is being produced in January turns out to be a fabulous film.
Corny, yes, but important -- Peace in the world. (We can wish, can't we?)

Personal Highs of 2003: Moving back to LA and surviving the move.
Discovering that the place I rented sight unseen was small, but utterly charming.
Coming out of a writing slump (it was taking me forever to write even a few pages) and having it all suddenly pour out of me like it used to in the pre-slump days.
Meeting some interesting new people. Well, they weren't "new people" like they were rodents before - but new-to-me-people.

Personal Lows of 2003: Some financial stuff - which was also a high, in that once it was done, I was freed of something that had been hanging over me for 8 years.
Leaving friends behind when moving.
...And other things which would be boring and depressing to discuss on the Happiest Site on the Internet.
Hey, man, it's alllll good now. Cue the new Age Music.

Once more, as they say in Hungary "BUEK!" (Which stands for 'Boldog uj évet kivánok!' Which means... I wish you a happy New Year!)

Good morning everyone!
Let's see, a look back at 2003.
Highlights would have to include graduating from college, of course...also seeing Elaine Stritch live, which was unforgetable...finally losing those 30 pounds, definitely on the list...hmm, that's all I can think of at the moment.
Lowlights, seeing my ex-boyfriend go to jail (he got out yesterday after eight months) watching a few dear frends go through nasty break ups and heartache...I guess nothing really bad has happened to me, I've just been the observer.
Hopes for 2004...well, figure out what I want to do with my life now that I've graduated.  Hopefully get settled into a graduate program somewhere.  And lets just say I hope next year I have a special someone to ring in the new year with...this single life is getting old :)
This promises to be a quiet new years, no real partying going on, so I shall be checking in here from time to time to partake of the HHW festivities

I"m Here! My night with Paul. Enjoyable show and Mecurio is a somewhat chunkier than in Strictly Ballroom (he lost weight for this role) - shorter than you would think (less tall!), has a pleasant singing voice and copes with comedy well. He plays Ethen (the well endowed) in the show and fair enough too!
It is New Year's Day here and has been for over 8 hours.

Sorry to hear Keith is still sick - I told him not to shovel.  But now you can both join us for our Rockin' New Year's Eve Do.

He doesn't listen to me why would he listen to you?  He just doesn't know how to be idle. At the moment he is outside shaking snow of bushes and trees before they are crushed to death.

DRLaura are Joshie’s eyes really that green?  What a precious picture.

Jrand and MBarnum you have a rather large number of siblings.  Myrna is an unusual name.  Were your parents Myrna Loy fans?  My siblings and I were all given English names.  My brother, the oldest, is George and my sister Peggy was two years younger.  I followed 4 ½ years later.  My mother wasn’t supposed to have any more children but she played a trick on my father and here I am.

TCB-oh my god!  Those pictures are soooooo cute.  I love Huskies!  I just don’t recommend having one.  They shed non-stop and are too stubborn.

This last year was just a continuation of the year before.  We have had too many loses in our lives.  So I shall only dwell on all the good things that happened this year.  We had several visits from good friends and we took several trips with friends and family.  The highlights of the year were: our son pursuing his dream and going to Romania with the Peace Corps.; our older son purchasing a loft with his girlfriend; my brother and I have become closer than ever.  Joining this wonderful group on a regular basis has been wonderful.  I had the great pleasure of meeting Jay this year and hope to meet more of you in the following year, and to see Jay again.

My personal hopes for 2004 are for a quiet, peaceful and healthy year.  Most of all I hope my children continue to have growth in their personal lives and for my oldest son to find his professional life.  I’m looking forward to our family trip in Eastern Europe.

To all of you here, I wish you a year filled with good health, happiness and for those of you searching for the perfect job or mate, may you find it.

I have only an older brother - Phillip.

I do not feel sorry for only children because if you have a very mean, very vindictive older sibling, you can spend many miserable years with them or trying your best to avoid them, and I did. You make of your childhood what you will whether there are siblings about or not. I think dealing with my brother made me a much stronger person and able to stand the negative comments about me (who took dance, voice, even baton) made by others and also able to live in solitude quite contentedly.

My, that sounds maudlin. Sorry for that.

Now on to serious business. I have indeed had highs and lows durring 2003. The best help I received for my "lows" was from friends on this board. Things always work out for the best (Candide!) but it is so difficult to accept that at the time. Meeting new friends here has been wonderful too. For 2004 our planned trip to France and (hopefully the US of A) should be the highlite. We hope to add more Hainsies to our "reality" list. We only accept Jose as being real but the rest of you could all be figments of BK's imagination and his multiple personalities.

What a lovely message, Jane.

Highlights of 2003(The Top Three):  (1)Earning the two roles I coveted A)Matthew Harrison Brady in Inherit the Wind; and B) Horace Vandegelder in Hello, Dolly!.  (2) Winning Best Actor honors for both productions, one from the theater itself for DOLLY, and the other from the community for INHERIT.  (3) Finding HHW and all of the wonderful people that are part of this site from BK, Mark, and Craig who make it happen; to the newest members and the lurkers, as well.

Lowlights of 2003 (The Bottom 3): (1)My continuing health problems (my back, my hip, my pneumonia),  (2) losing my battle with Uncle Sam over income taxes, (3) and the temporary stagnation of my own business, The Birkeland Touch.

Finally have some time to post about the trip and about the highlights of 2003.

Hightlights of 2003 seem to be all theatre related.  All the shows I MD'd were awesome, including "Hello, Dolly!" with 6. 7 and 8 graders.  I saw Elaine Stritch live as well as toured backstage of the Phantom of the Opera tour and met Lisa Vroman.  It's been a decent year and what better way to top it off than a trip to NYC.

As I posted earlier this morning, we saw 5 awesome shows.  By some fluke, we got 5th row center seats for "The Boy From Oz" 40 minutes before curtain, and what fun THAT was.  The second act was SO good, I think I may have cried.  On the downside of TBFO, I can't see this show working without Hugh Jackman, I know the show will close for a week or so when he is on vacation, and his contract is for a year, but unless someone studies him real hard, I can't see anyone else that would be able to play the part.  We're really glad we saw this show.

If you get a chance and are in NYC in the next few weeks, see "The Musical of Musicals - The Musical", I've never laughed so hard in my life.  5 skits all with the same plot (I can't pay the rent, you WILL pay the rent, I'll pay the rent) in different comoposer styles - R&H, Sondheim, Herman, ALW and Kander and Ebb, and it was just a hoot.

We supped at Joe Allen after "Taboo" and I was pleased to hear BK's Schwartz CD playing in one of the Broadway Souveneir shops.  There are the HHW connections.

Happy New Year, all.

I listened yesterday for the first itme to bk's Schwartz CD and loved it. My fave cuts at this moment - this will change with more listenings are Chenoweth's "Lion Tamer" and the late great Dorothy Loudon's "No Time at All"... While I was listening I had this image of Bruce in the booth smiling and just "willing" Loudon to give it her all -- which, voice problems or not, she most certainly does.

I'm an only child - sort of. My father's first wife was killed in the Holocaust. He had a son who was borderline psychotic and was, I think, around 13 when I was born. (My father didn't want other kids because his only one turned out so badly. My mother had many abortions, then finally put her foot down and said "I'm HAVING this one." That would be  Me.) He (half-brother) would do cute things like tell me when my mother and father went out that if they were in an accident and never returned, he would put me out on the street and I'd have to beg to get food. I was 2 or 3 when he told me things of this sort. I haven't seen or spoken to him in over 20 years. The sad thing is that he's my only link to my father who died when I was very young.

Oh, and the HHW Hussies learned a big rule last night... never offer to show your ID!  Unless the place cards you at the door, you'll often have no problem at all getting them underage types in with you, but once they see one ID, they usually want to see them all.

I would just like to say that when we were inside and about to order drinks, I TRIED to stop Maya from bum-rushing the bar brandishing her ID, but she was too quick for me!  :)

I had a lovely time meeting Maya, Emily, Andrea, non-DR Robin, and Jason last night.  I think Maya already summarized the evening pretty well, although I'm sure we will hear more border stories when Emily and Andrea get back online.  And as promised, here is a picture of us outside Ollie's in Times Square.  (I assume you all know who we are, but just in case - from left to right, Emily, Andrea, Maya, me, and Jason!)

DR Panni: Your story made me sad. I'm sorry your older half-brother treated you like that.

Drs MBarnum and Jane: Glad you liked the pic! (and Mymy too)

My family:
mom: Angela
dad: Cary
children: Laura
              Anthony

Lows of 2003: Family members finding out they have cancer, a little bit of boy trouble, certain things my classmates did that upset me

Highs: graduating from high school (although that was bittersweet), following my heart and taking a year off before college--shades of "On the Steps of the Palace" :), working at a performing arts school, "meeting" some wonderful people (Mymy, Mark, Seany, all of you!) and maintaining strong friendships with my friends in college and those still in my old high school

hopes for 2004: peace throughout the world, good health for all, end of abortion, help in decision-making, more patience, spiritual growth, more generosity of spirit, and a little romance!

Jane:  I have question.... other than a vivid description of my last lover, what or who is Jo-Jo the Dog-Faced Reindeer?

Well, TCB, "Jo Jo the Dog Faced Reindeer" was a long-in-development children's Xmas special about a wanna-be Santa's reindeer who is terribly self-conscious about his dog-like appearance.  Sort of a variation on making the most of the attributes your born with--kinda like the Rudolf fable.  Seems that one Xmas eve, Santa is waylaid by a pack of vicious dogs near Hackensack, NJ and only "Jo Jo" can save him...and Christmas.  It's a great PBS special and Echo played the part with aplomb.  At least that's how I remember it.

Anyway, the name for the special was derived from the real-life “JoJo the dog-faced boy” who toured with P T Barnum throughout the US and Europe in the 1880s and 90s.  Apparently, he suffered from hypertrichosis, or abnormal hair growth, which caused him to grow long hair all over his face.

So does this photo of Jo Jo resemble your last lover?

My dear friend Jeff (who was seated next to me in the picture I posted a week or two ago) told me he was going out tonight simply because he couldn't stand to be alone on New Year's Eve. For some reason, this has never bothered me. Do others feel the need to be in the company of people, even strangers in a crowded bar, on New Year's Eve?

We're just staying home on New Years Eve like always.  Back when Broadway shows didn't cancel or start early on New Years Eve I went to a show and couldn't get out of the area until after midnight, nor could I even see the ball.  It's too much of a madhouse... and besides I still believe in the Constitution and the 4th Ammendment which makes unreasonable search and seizure against the law and from everything I've heard this law will be broken with everyone going into the Times Square area.

Welcome back MDS. I assumed you were at a Wild Party.
DR Jed: Thanks for the answer. Who gets to ring the bells?  Do the studs jangle with the bells?

MusicGuy. Mercurio displayed more than could be described "Strictly Ballroom". He certainly didn't have to sing or dance to get major applause. (I avoided the term clap).

Michael Shayne..

In the future, could you please post a link to the playbill article and not the entire thing. Tremendous waste of bandwidth and space here.

WEL, you wrote "and besides I still believe in the Constitution and the 4th Ammendment which makes unreasonable search and seizure against the law and from everything I've heard this law will be broken with everyone going into the Times Square area"

Being on orange alert and considering the recent terrorist cell "activity" I don't think it's "unreasonable".  Like you have decided to not go, that is the choice of anyone heading to that area. If you were "forced" into being searched where you had no choice where you are - or completely randomly, then I would say 4th Ammendment rights would be violated.

Just my .02

By the way, I read of many of those deaths first here at HHW.

The 4th Ammendment doesn't mention that it's okay to be searched only at places where you do not choose to be.  Some of the rent-a-cops at various theatres, buildings, etc. relish the fact that they can search everyone for no reason at all.  I still remember going to a show inside the Jewish Museum and having my old, dull nail clippers confiscated.  What was I going to do... make the piano player play a different score?  Every time any American's 4th Ammendment rights are taken away is another victory for whomever it is we are supposed to be afraid of.

Thank you TCB.

Panni and Matt H compared to you both I am very lucky.  My sister wasn’t too bad when I was young.  For the most part we were close and had some great times together, but then I was young and did whatever she said.   When I was 17 she began to change and became worse over the years.  The signs were always there, I just didn’t realize yet.  The last five years were absolutely terrible but I didn’t walk away because of my father.

Matt it is a cute picture of you, your brother and Sister.

Thanks LauraII, Keith really is improving, just not as fast as he would like.

I have never been alone on New Year’s Eve.  I’m sure I would rather be alone than someplace with strangers.

LC thanks for the fun picture.

WEL.. while I see your point. The world and our country changed on 9/11 and there isn't much we can do about that. I'm not arguing with you (so please don't take it that way) But I can tell you first hand that I worked for a publications company for 6 years and didn't think TWICE about the fact that in my carry-on luggage I would bring several box cutters, x-acto knives, etc for my job. No one thought twice I am sure until 9/11.

While it is unfortunate with new security measure - I am all for keeping everyone safe. Not at the expense of the constitution - but please remember that the document you are referring to was written LONG before such threats actually existed.

Surely given the chaotic nature that occurs during NYE in Times Square (I have been twice) - you wouldn't begrudge the city a little lattitude in the interest of keeping any possible criminal activity down?

Unfair, yes - probably. Illegal and unconstitutional, I don't really think so...

Happy New Years Eve, Everyone!

I’m sorry if I gave the impression it was already New Years here in Florida.  I just meant to say that was the plan for tonight.  I’m already more tired than I should be.  I feel like I’m coming down with something and feel really blah.

The boss wanted the gang to go out to lunch today.  I honestly didn’t feel like going and really didn’t want to go when I learned where they chose to go.  The sea food place.   Ugh.  Thank goodness they serve French Onion Soup.

Regarding the 8 inch issue.  At the risk of being  risky there is an old joke that goes–Do you know why women usually are bad at measuring? The answer is below.

Jane, the last JAG I saw was the old Christmas show from last year.  I think they are into reruns already.  Don’t they come out with a few news ones later in the year to keep your interest peaked?

I love all the doggie/kitty posts.  Let me try to post a picture of my current two.  I can’t imagine a life with some kind of animal in it.

So far as the old  year goes–it had it’s share of ups and downs.  Seems like more downs than ups when I really stop and think about it but I won’t bore you with the details.

On the plus side, I have a job I’m happy with, have managed to become completely debt free (no mean feat as I’m sure you know) and kept my New Years Resolutions from last year.  I’m grateful for new friends made and old friends kept.  I’m deeply sorry for any harm or hurt I may have caused.  I hope I was of some help to others.

Since I completed my resolutions from last year,  I can hope this years will meet with equal success.  As you know, I’m hoping for a new/different house or barring that a MAJOR upgrade to the current abode, a trip to NYC and better heath. Lastly, I wish you and yours the fulfillment of your dearest wish, whatever that may be.

Oh, and here is the answer to my question.  The reason women can't measure correctly is because all of our lives we’ve been told something this big _________________ is 8 inches.   I’ll leave you to fill in just what that object is.   ;)

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]HAPPY NEW YEAR![/move]

DR Joy and Noel's amazing wedding

It's one of the thrills of 2003 to read so many positive comments about Our Wedding - The Musical on these pages.

2003 was a marvelous year all around:

October 12 in the Village there was Our Wedding - The Musical and it was great to see it greeted with more laughter and tears than anything I've witnessed.

The following week The New York Times gave it a rave with two huge photographs and they could have covered the wedding of Jason Robert Brown to Georgia Stitt instead.  There was also a wonderful write-up by Jeffrey Sweet, something of a think-piece, for Dramatics and we excerpted this for the liner notes to the CD (now selling briskly at www.WeddingMusical.com )

In fact, I'd call the release of the CD a highlight in itself.  James Roehlehr did an amazing job balancing the sound so you can hear my 4-year-old niece as easily as the rollicking gospel choir of 10.  It's the first time my songs have been on a CD that is commercially available.

He also recorded my song They Call That Dancing, which was written with and for a group of visually-impaired dancers, ages 8-12, at the Lighthouse.  The performance of this in June would have to be a highlight in anyone's book.

While Our Wedding played for an audience of friends and family, I don't know where the audience came from for Katz at the Donnell Library last January.  DW Joy put together this retrospective of songs I've written between 1979 and 2002, and I'm told it was the most successful of all 13 years of the Donnell
monthly songbook series.  Lovely performances by a cast of five.  The comedy songs went over so well I was surprised to hear so many audience members
comment on the more serious narrative, "So I Chose."  Many a middle-aged woman claimed "That was my life, and you captured all the feelings."

This song was reprised at the Donnell's "Discovered Treasures" show in September, which was set up as a sort of "best of" for the series, which features new musical theatre writing every month.

Of all musical theatre writers now living, there's none I admire more than Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock.  In May, I had the privelege of assembling a revue of their songs, Grand Knowing You, for a huge and talented cast.  Such a wealth of wonderful material.

And two weeks after that I was performing my incidental music for La Ronde, scored for piano, violin and soprano.  Lyrics by a guy who'd had a musical on Broadway whom I never met.

And, though infinitessimally minor, I made a musical contribution to the Broadway production of Long Day's Journey Into Night, one of three favors I did for Vanessa Redgrave last summer.  I enjoyed working with such a gracious and legendary talent.

It's hard to think of a low point this year.  I've a very sick friend, but she's exceeded expectations by hanging on and she made it to Our Wedding and to see in the New Year.

I've not had a chance to read posts, but will do so when I get back home in a week and a half.

The CD is still being shipped, even though I'm away:

Kerry - In my mother's family, Kerry is followed by Kevin, too!  However, they have a Shannon as the eldest sibling.

George - I did listen to some of the WAMC show, but for some reason the streaming audio wasn't being overly-cooperative with my computer (as is my fershluganah computer's way at times), so I finally gave up.

Also... I'm listening to the Violet OCR at the moment.  Just have to say once again how much I enjoy this score.  If anybody is unfamiliar with it, that must be rectified!

New Year's Eve is my least favourite holiday of the year.  Has been ever since high school.  I think it has something with all the enforced, desperate jollity raising expectations to an unrealistic level.  The lovely wife  Julieanne's and my tradition is to open the bubbly (we already have) and watch videos or DVDs, snuggle with the critters and, if we last till twelve, we pop a few Christmas Crackers.  Occasionally people join us, but we never go out.

I got most of it, but the recording of the Laurel Massé Internet New Year's Eve gig didn't go without a hitch.  Actually, I missed one instrumental piece performed by Laurel's guest, Francesca...someone (never heard of the name) and when the sound came back, Laurel was just singing the last note of another song.  Darn.  But I got the rest of it!  Anyway, in about 40 minutes, I'll be downtown eating at a fancy-type restaurant.  After that, I'll be back home...alone and not unhappy at all.  I'll be partying at HHW! ;D

Answers to a couple of DR's Questions:

What siblings have I?  One older sister, Diane

Do I feel the need to be in the company of anyone?  No.  I don't mind being at a party if I know people but I'm uncomfortable around people I don't know.  If I'd had my druthers (and I have several times over the years), I'd druther choose to be alone.

It's about 7:00 and I have to get ready for the feasting at 7:30. :) The place is called Anthony’s (http://www.anthonys.com).  It's a Northwest regional chain that's pretty good...except that I really don't like seafood.  They do have a very good dinner salad, but it's (of course) over-priced.  But since I'm not paying, I'm not complaining!

I'll be back well before midnight Pacific time, but probably not before midnight New York time.  So:

The finely-feathered der Brucer and I will be getting to bed early tonight, rather than wait for the New Year to begin, because he has to fly to Long Beach early tomorrow.  (Yes, BK, he will be arriving at Long Beach Airport.  Not that he's planning for you to meet him there, but you've commented here about how you liked that particular airport and, well, we like it too!)

Actually, since I'm not going with him, I really could stay up all night, but I think I'll pass this time.  (I moulted recently, and simply am not up to flying right now.)

As for siblings, I refer to my only older as "mysisterthebitch."

That's not a word I use lightly; nor is the word "hate," which I only use when referring to hate crimes.  Unfortunately, mysisterthebitch is one of the most hateful people I have known.

For years she used my being gay as a means of putting a wedge between my father and myself, using the old "you must never tell Dad because he'll never understand" gambit.

She has also never appologized for slapping der Brucer at the dinner table one Christmas (supposedly for teasing her about not liking sweet potatoes, but really for getting along so well with her fiance).

See, all those here who don't care for their sibs, you are not alone!

(For what it's worth, der Brucer never hears from his brother, and only occasionally hears from his sister.  We save a bundle on Christmas cards!)

Most Memorable Moments

The launching of www.brucekimmel.com

Meeting Bruce Kimmel at Hairspray and asking if he was Alan Abelew from "The First Nudie Musical" and when he said "No". I then asked if he was Stephen Nathan.

...Not really. I had plan to say that and even practiced it, but it went right out the window.

Having all those wonderful dinners at Joe Allen's and meeting the lovely touring Thoroughly Modern Mille herself Juliana.

Attending the recording of Jeepers Creepers and taking photos of the recording session. Some of which were published in Scarlet Street Magazine.

Meeting many of the Dear Readers who were part of the Scarlet Street Singers.

Meeting BK's NYC assistant Jonathan who it turns out I have been buying cds from for several years.

Getting reacquainted with Matt Hough who I first met about 15 years ago on a fido net board called Greasepaint and who I hope to meet one day face to face.

Getting know other DR like Tony Dale and Susan Gordon.

Reworking some plays that I wrote (one that was produced) so I can hopefully get future productions out of it.

Seeing DR Mark Rothman's new play here in Florida and having dinner with him afterwards. It was a real pleasure to do both.

On the downside.

My Uncle and my grandmother passed away. My father finally started  kidney dialysis.

DR George, are you certain that Anthony's is a Northwest chain?  Because I know there are Anthony's seafood places in the San Diego area, and while it's not uncommon for individual restaurants to have the same name, two chains of restaurants with the same moniker sounds like trademark infringement.

Any lawyers out there?  GET TO WORK!   8)

Happy New Year!! I worked THE MERRY WIDOW tonight at the Met and then my friend, Jennifer, and I walked down to Times Square for the dropping of the ball. We could only get to 43rd and 8th, so we couldn't see much, but I got a couple of pictures and I called my parents at midnight and basically yelled at them, "I'm in Times Square right now! Happy New Year, I love you! I can't hear you! Bye!" and hung up. :) It sounds like a dreadful place to be, and totally insane to go there, but there's an indescribable energy when you're part of a crowd that large, and it was actually quite fun. I will say, had they not searched people and prevented everyone from bringing things with them, I would not have felt safe at all, so I say good for them for taking some control over the situation. It put my mind at ease and, thank God, nothing happened.

Now, I have lots of pictures of things for people, and I'm trying to make them as small as possible so they don't take up too much space. Here's the first one...it's for TCB (much to my chagrin)...

Good evening everyone.  It's only 8:45 in these here parts.  DR Jed pointed out to me this afternoon that I will be the last of the HHW people to ring in the new year.  But I will be there in spirit when it's midnight on the west coast.  Hopefully I'll be around for the countdown too.  As of now I've had two rather sizeable glasses of wine...quite a lot for me...and I'm a bit tipsy :)

Can you imagine Dolly Levi coming down these stairs? This is the grand staircase at the Met. Yes, the walls are covered in red velvet and the floors have matching carpets. The carpets are replaced every summer.

Hmmmm...veddy interesting.  According to this page (http://www.anthonys.com/restaurants/locations.html) on the NW Anthony's website, they list the specific locations of the restaurants.  The only ones shown are in Washington State.  Woody, do you know if your ("your" meaning San Diego's) Anthony's restaurant has a website??  Might be something for an investigator as well as a lawyer. :)

Anthony's was not too bad.  Except that I really don't like seafood. :P That's pretty much all that they had, but they had a cobb salad with shrimp.  The good news was that I was able to get it with chicken on it instead.  Yes, I am a picky eater.  That's my eating disorder.  Pity me.

So anyway, after I picked out as much of the avacado that I could, the salad was actually quite good.  And for dessert we had the Melting Chocolate Cake.  Oh My God...this is one of the best chocolate desserts!  It's  little cake that has raspberry sauce over and around it and it's served with a huge scoop of ice cream.  When you take a bite, the middle literally has a chocolate center that oozes out and is just to die for.  The four of us shared two of them.  And you have to wait about 10-15 minutes to get one.  They make them fresh each time.  I cannot recommend them highly enough.  That definitely made up for the avacado.   MMMMMM.   ;D ;D ;D ;D

Now, only about 10 minutes until 2004!!!!!!

I like to just "post" once.  If I post and modify, I'm afraid that...potentially someone could comment on what I've posted, then I would modify before I realize that they commented and then their comment would mean nothing.  Yes, I'm weird that way, too.  ;)
