MARCHMALLOWS

Well, you've read the notes, you're marched into March eating a Marchmallow, and now it is time for you to post until the marching cows come home whilst eating Marchmallows.

Didn't we do PULCHRITUDE about a week and a half ago? I remember my word of the day sentence was Sophia Loren was the epitome of PULCHRITUDE.

I like all the Boetticher westerns on DVD and I would like another western with Joel McCrea on DVD, called RAMROD, it is a noir western which also stars Veronica Lake, Preston Foster, Donald Crisp, and Don DeFore in maybe his best performance.

And speaking of noir westerns, I would also like to see on DVD...Blood on the Moon and Whispering Smith (which isn't reallly a noir western, I guess).

Lastly I'd like on DVD the great movie about theatre and summer stock and actors, THOSE LIPS, THOSE EYES...starring Frank Langella and BK's erstwhile co-star, Tom Hulce.

I KNEW it sounded familiar.  Damn them, damn them all to hell!  I'm changing it now and then NO one will know what you're going on about.  And we shall laugh and laugh and just when they think we cannot laugh any more, we shall laugh again.

PHANTASMAGORIA!  I've got a million of 'em.

I was actually worried about PULCHRITUDE, but when I tried to search it the search function didn't work.

At the tail end of yesterday's notes, BK wrote:

Quote
People come, people go, like Grand Hotel.

On the off-chance that he was referring to yours truly, I can only say in my defense that it is easier for me to access the new daily notes if I back out of AOL entirely and then reload.

Raspberries, ripening on the vine, would provide us with a PHANTASMAGORIA!

Yes, it is wonderful that so many films that I have wanted to be on DVD are now ON DVD.  But there are exceptions of course.

I would like to see on DVD:

HARLOW with a nice Carroll Baker commentary track.

SON OF FURY with Tyrone Power and Frances Farmer with some nice extras

THE HORSEMASTERS with Annette Funicello a Disney film about Horse Jumpers in England and let's put ESCAPADE IN FLORENCE on the B side.

I will leave other choices to other DR's.

Good morning, all!  Back to BABES IN TOYLAND today.  I've read all about the 1903 Iroquois Theatre fire, I've been looking at scores of photos, and I'm ready to finish the proof of the orchestra score.  I've got one more Act Three number, then around 10 Appendix pieces, which should take me the rest of the week.

Before I start my DVD wish list, what's happening with the LI'L ABNER release?  I can't find an official release date any more, and I hope it hasn't been cancelled or postponed.

DVD requests:
FLOWER DRUM SONG
OH, WHAT A LOVELY WAR!
THE INNOCENTS (Deborah Kerr)
THE UNINVITED
GEORGY GIRL

Hello all!! I had some computer issues  ::)  however they now seem to be OK here at home.  I have to see if they are resolved at the work computer as well.  (Because of the snow the schools are on a two hour delay so I will be going in to the office later) I have been reading along for the past few days as a guest... it was extremely frustrating to read all those wonderful posts and not be able to join in the fun!!

Congratulations to everyone on the 31  pages and 900 posts on Sunday.  It was wonderful reading all your comments, what an brillant , educated and astute group of people post here... it is an education every day and I feel privledged  to share in your conversations.  I suspect I will not be speaking a word at the NYC HHW meet, just listening and enjoying!!

Speaking of the meet, DR derB will you two be joining us?  I do hope so!!

Well I must go and de-ice the car.  Hopefully I will be joining you later from the worksite!!!

Not to be a broken record, but, I want my VALLEY OF THE DOLLS.
I'll second, or third, THE INNOCENTS. (If RETURN TO PEYTON PLACE can be released as a Fox Studio "Classic," then where is/are THE INNOCENTS?)
Ross' GOODBYE MR. CHIPS.
Bogdonavich's AT LONG LAST LOVE - see Fox Studio Classic line above.
HEROES with Harrison Ford, Sally Field and Henry Winkler.
The Alice Faye catalogue.
JUPITER'S DARLING - and, while we're at it, ALL of the Esther Williams extravaganzas.
Ken Russell's THE BOY FRIEND and THE DEVILS.
James Ivory's SLAVES OF NEW YORK.

Phantasmagoria
by Lewis Carroll

The Trysting
One winter night, at half-past nine,
Cold, tired, and cross, and muddy,
I had come home, too late to dine,
And supper, with cigars and wine,
    Was waiting in the study.

There was a strangeness in the room,
    And Something white and wavy
Was standing near me in the gloom--
I took it for the carpet-broom
    Left by that careless slavey.

But presently the Thing began
    To shiver and to sneeze:
On which I said “Come, come, my man!
That’s a most inconsiderate plan,
Less noise there, if you please!”

“I’ve caught a cold”, the Thing replies,
    “Out there upon the landing.”
I turned to look in some surprise,
And there, before my very eyes,
    A little Ghost was standing!

He trembled when he caught my eye,
    And got behind a chair.
“How came you here,” I said, “and why?
I never saw a thing so shy.
    Come out! Don’t shiver there!”

He said “I’d gladly tell you how,
    And also tell you why;
But” (here he gave a little bow)
“You’re in so bad a temper now,
You’d think it all a lie.

“And as to being in a fright,
    Allow me to remark
That Ghosts have just as good a right,
In every way, to fear the light,
As Men to fear the dark.”

“No plea”, said I, “can well excuse
    Such cowardice in you:
For Ghosts can visit when they choose,
Whereas we Humans ca’n’t refuse
    To grant the interview. "

He said “A flutter of alarm
Is not unnatural, is it ?
I really feared you meant some harm:
But, now I see that you are calm,
    Let me explain my visit.

“Houses are classed, I beg to state,
    According to the number
Of Ghosts that they accommodate:
(The Tenant merely counts as weight,
    With Coals and other lumber).

“This is a ‘one-ghost’ house, and you,
    When you arrived last summer,
May have remarked a Spectre who
Was doing all that Ghosts can do
    To welcome the new-comter

“In Villas this is always done--
    However cheaply rented:
For, though of course there’s less of fun
When there is only room for one,
    Ghosts have to be contented.

“That Spectre left you on the Third--
Since then you’ve not been haunted:
For, as he never sent us word,
‘Twas quite by accident we heard
    That any one was wanted.

“A Spectre has first choice, by right,
    In filling up a vacancy;
Then Phantom, Goblin, Elf, and Sprite--
If all these fail them, they invite
The nicest Ghoul that they can see.

“The Spectres said the place was low,
And that you kept bad wine:
So, as a Phantom had to go,
And I was first, of course, you know,
    I couldn’t well decline.”

“No doubt”, said I, “they settled who
    Was fittest to be sent:
Yet still to choose a brat like you,
To haunt a man of forty
    Was no great compliment!”

“I’m not so young, Sir,” he replied,
“As you might think. The fact is,
In caverns by the water-side,
And other places that I’ve tried,
I’ve had a lot of practice:

“But I have never taken yet
    A strict domestic part,
And in my flurry I forget
The Five Good Rules of Etiquette
We have to know by heart.”

My sympathies were warming fast
    Towards the little fellow:
He was so utterly aghast
At having found a Man at last,
And looked so scared and yellow.

“At least”, I said, “I’m glad to find
A Ghost is not a dumb thing!
But pray sit down: you’ll feel inclined
(If, like myself, you have not dined)
To take a snack of something:

“Though, certainly, you don’t appear
A thing to offer food to!
And then I shall be glad to hear--
If you will say them loud and clear--
The Rules that you allude to.”

“Thanks! You shall hear them by and by.
This is a piece of luck!”
“What may I offer you?” said I
“Well, since you are so kind, I’ll try
    A little bit of duck.

“One slice! And may I ask you for
    Another drop of gravy?”
I sat and looked at him in awe,
For certainly I never saw
A thing so white and wavy.

And still he seemed to grow more white,
    More vapoury, and wavier--
Seen in the dim and flickering light,
As he proceeded to recite
    His “Maxims of Behaviour”.

I, too, would love a copy of that Pirates of Penzance!! I think Kevin Kline was just the best Pirate King EVER!!! I'm a huge fan - also love him in SOAPDISH!!! FISH CALLED WANDA. BIG CHILL. Even, so help me, DAVE!

Just sitting here at the keyboard, vocalizing. That first blast of caffeine, and vocalize is all I wanna do -- started years and years ago... while I was a Juilliard student. The first thing in the morning, I'd make coffee, and start vocalizing at 9 AM. So, like a Pavlovian Pooch, when that caffeine jolt hits, all I wanna do is yodle. Free choice??? Hahahahahahaaaaaa!!
