Title: NOW IS THE TIME
Post by: bk on August 21, 2004, 11:59:09 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you know that now is the time for all good men and women and also that now is the time to post until the cows come home, so to it, I say.

Hope you enjoy the TV series of "Pennies" BK. Potter's work improved so much after this one. "Singing Detective" and "Lipstick On Your Collar" were really wonderful.

Topic for some answers if DR's can help.
"I"d Like To Teach The World to Sing", "I Love A Rainy Night" and "No Matter What Shape Your Stomache's In" all began life as commercial "jingles" before their lives on the pop charts. (I think!). Are there any other such popular hits that had that road to fame?

We've Only Just Begun was a commercial before it became a hit song.  It Won't Hurt to Try It was a commercial and had two versions, although neither really hit - wonderful song, though.

I had an absolutely wonderful evening at Jeff's home.  It was fun meeting George,  Michael (who is even cuter in person than in his avatar) and our gracious host Jeff.

Jeff's wife Betsy is warm & delightful.  Then there are their two darling, extremely well behaved boys and the sweet puppy BG.   I just had to take a photo of BG for Keith.

I'm going to say goodnight and visit with Bryan who is home from a wedding.  He also had a nice evening.  Betsy was kind enought to bring me back so Bryan could stay later at the party.  Michael would also have brought me home.  Thanks anyway Michael.

Bryan is currently eating some of the best jordon almonds in the world.

I wish I had the gadgets for my camera with me so Bryan could post them.  They came out nice, including the group photo taken by 7 year old Gabe.

I just took some darling photo's of Bryan's Suguar Gliders.  They are too cute.

Good Morning!

It was a good show and a great audience last night.  While I was hanging out back stage during intermission, I could hear one woman in the audience talking with her friend.  -Let's just say that this woman probably never talks quiet enough for anyone.  ;)  Well, she was reading the program to one of her friends, and she was looking for who wrote the parody lyrics.  "Well, you know my cousin writes these sorts of things for our family get-togethers.  I should tell him to put together a show like this himself.  I'm sure everyone would love it!"  -Watch out, BK!  Competition!   :P

As for "my" show, it went well.  I had a few "interesting" moments, but nothing too noticeable -well, except to BK, of course.  And, thankfully, the slight headache I had before the show didn't ache too much during the show.

As DR Jay mentioned, we went to see the new Tom Cruise movie, "Collateral".  I did like, but not love it.

I had not really read anything about the movie, just seen some of the interviews with Tom Cruise when the movie opened a few weeks ago, so I wasn't too familiar with the plot.  And the only other "information" I had about the movie were some movie stills I saw posted on AOL's front page.  Well, courtesy of those still I was able to figure out where the movie was going after the opening five minutes.  Ah, well...

But, again, I did like it.  I'm not really an action movie fan, and this one really isn't an action movie.  In fact, it seems to be trying to be a "serious" action movie.  Lots of in-depth character stuff.  However, the virtual travelogue of L.A. this movie provides is quite informative. ;)

*Actually, the "spoilers" provided by some of the movie stills I saw remind me of when I went to see "Poltergeist" and "The Hitcher" (the movie with C. Thomas Howell and Rutger Hauer).

The one clip for "Poltergeist" I kept seeing on various TV shows was the one where the mother starts "creeping" up onto the wall of her bedroom.  Well, as I'm watching the movie, there's that "false" ended where the little girl comes back, and you think everything is all better.  "Hey, wait a minute... I haven't seen that clip they showed on TV?!?!.... Oh...."

And then there was "The Hitcher" - the one clip that was being shown turned out to be from the final ten minutes of the movie!!  -Do you think they did on purpose?

*Oh, and one thing I was also reminded of when I was watching "Collateral" was how relatively short Tom Cruise is (at least compared to the classic "tall" leading man).  I actually met him when I was in high school right after "Top Gun" had come out, and it was a little "strange" being able to say Hi to him eye-to-eye.  And I've happened to see him twice when he's been on David Letterman too - when I've sat in the studio audience - and, boy, does he make Dave look tall!

-Don't know why his height caught my eye - or why I'm even mentioning it...  Well, it is free-for-all day. ;)

And speaking of days off...

I'm not really sure what I'm going to do with myself over the next few days.  Well, I have some ideas, it's just a matter of organizing them - or not organizing them.  One thing I know I have to do is to buy some Hollywood postcards and send them back home to my nieces and nephews.  They just love getting mail!

Also, Baayork Lee is in town this week auditioning a company of A Chorus Line for an upcoming production at Theatre Under the Stars in Houston.  Originally, she was going to be in town to see What If?, but due to some scheduling changes she won't be able to see the show - she gets in tonight, and she leaves Thursday morning.  Ah, well...  In any case, we'll hopefully be getting together while she's in town.

And on that note - an A-sharp! - Goodnight.

I will be gone for most of today, so I am posting early (for me).  We had a lovely time at our NW HHW get together.  I've thought for the longest time (oooh, a Billy Joel reference) that the folk around here are the nicest anywhere, and that was proven in spades (actually hearts--awwww) last night.  We had a rollicking good time, laughing about nothing and talking about everything.  I even foisted some of my non-sold eBay film mags off on Mike.  Thank G-d THAT stuff is out of the office, LOL.  Everyone also got lovely parting gifts of various CDs/tapes of mine that I would also love to get out of the house.  We need to have larger, more frequent HHW parties so that I can COMPLETELY empty my house of unwanted items.  :)

I have a couple more pics I'll try to post later--they were all taken with our "joke" $9.99 digital "camera" (emphasis on the quotes on that word) we got from Target, so don't expect masterpieces.  Everyone else had actual real cameras and will no doubt post better pics later.

My age has made me an early bird. When I was in my 20s, 30s, and early 40s, I could sleep until 10 a.m. without even thinking about it. As I said in a post a couple of days ago, nowadays (a CHICAGO reference), if I sleep to 8 a.m. I think I've been given a gift.

When I was teaching, I had to be in bed by 10 or I was a wreck the next morning. Since retiring, I generally stay up until midnight most nights and often later than that.

I've got a question I'm curious about, too.

Is there any movie star, past or present, that you've never been a big fan of. For me the question is easy: Gary Cooper.

Early bird...early bird.  Up at 4 am today for grocery shopping....took the mater to WalMart....and all done before 6:15 am.  Usually do it on Saturday, but had to go to the bookstore yesterday!

MATTH - interesting question.  There are a FEW stars of yesteryear that I don't "get"....hmmmmmmmmmmmm....

Henry Fonda - always seems to me to be the same...same voice, same mannerisms, same acting tricks.

I'll stop there before I make anyone else mad except the Fonda Fans.

I chatted briefly with MB and JMK via AOL then DRJANE arrived and I was forgotten and disconnected....hehehehe.  Great pic JMK - let's see more...and we need to see Betsy and the boys, too!

Early bird -- and night owl. I don't sleep much, period. Go to bed pretty late most nights and am up by very latest 6 AM. But some nights, like last night, (and more and more lately) when my mind is churning, I get hardly any sleep. I have to admit that, as I work at home, sometimes the lack of sleep catches up with me and I lie down "to read" during the day - knowing I'll fall asleep. And I do, for an hour or so.
What I find interesting about staying up late is that even now, being -- chronologically anyway -- an adult, I still feel a sense of guilty pleasure in staying up as long as I want. My bedtime was very strictly controlled as a child (although I stayed awake, anyway - making up stories under the covers, or listening by the door to the TV in the other room) that I still feel that I'm getting away with something naughty by staying up.

Add me to the never-liked-James-Dean contingent.

"Now is the time for all good men (oh - a Cryer/Ford reference) to come to the aid of their country" was used as a typing excercise although I'm not sure why.  To get all the letters of the alphabet you need "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog".

Hi Folks,

Tom, I just LOVE the pictures you post of the birds.  I’m going to try to keep my digital camera handy and try (operative word there) to get some pictures of our local friends.

There is a Blue Jay somewhere around here who has the most lovely voice.  He/She sounds like a several different birds.  Jays already have several different voices—there’s the harsh sound when there is danger around, a very soft voice when talking to a mate/baby and a call to let other know there is food or water around.

We’re watching Errol Flynn in Dodge City as I type this.  It’s good to see him again.

Jane, I’m so glad you and the others had a good time!  More pictures, PLEASE!  More stories, PLEASE!

As I said yesterday, I have no problem with sleeping.  I wake up tired, am tired all day and I think I even sleep tired.  I will admit that on a free day I am more of a night owl then an early bird.  I have to get up at five thirty every work day so if I sign off from the board at nine, I am in bed by ten which barely gets me eight hours.  I may say I’m going to bed but I don’t fall asleep right away or I wake up several times a night so it’s not eight full hours of sleep anyway.

I would like to get one of those new foam beds that is supposed to conform to your body and maybe I would sleep better.  Anyone have one of those? Are they hot to sleep on?  I would think foam would be.  Do you like it?  How about those new “Sleep number” beds?

I have another question as well.  I need an opinion.  You know that one of the ladies I work with is going to retire soon.  I would like to get her a nice gift for her retirement party.  I don’t want get a watch or a clock or anything like that although I bought her a count down to retirement clock for Christmas last year and it was a bit hit.  Everyone comes over to her desk to look at it.

I know she does not have a DVD player but just bought a computer that plays DVD’s.  I was thinking of getting her one that would connect to her TV so she and husband could enjoy it together.  Yesterday, I was at the mall and I saw a something new.  They have a way of taking a photo and engraving it a on a charm/necklace.  As soon as I saw it, I thought I could have a picture of our section/group put on one of those and give that to her as a keepsake.

Which gift do you think I should get or do you have something else in mind that would be better?  I’m open to suggestions.

As far as actors go, I could name a bunch.  Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, James Dean, the list could go on and on.  I only have a few favorites, John Wayne, Errol Flynn, Rex Harrison, Tyrone Power, Harrison Ford (still mad at him but still like him).  There are a few more but hanged if I can think of them right now.

How many more What If’s are there?

Hello, All fellow HHWers!  I'm back home in Olympia after sleeping at Jeff & Betsy's house after our PNW HHW Get Together after I went to the Antiques Roadshow taping in Portland, Oregon, which started this whole Get Together occasion!!  (My, that was quite the unseemly sentence!)  Anyway, a great time was had by all last night (from what I could tell).  It'll be a day or two before I can post the few pictures that I took, because I have my sister's boyfriend's camera and don't have the correct cable or the program to download the pictures onto my computer.  So, please be patient and I'll ask Larry to hurry it up.  I haven't read any posts since yesterday, so I'm going to go back and catch up (or maybe even ketchup) on what I've missed, including the picture(s?) that Jeff posted of us.

I am a morning person. Even without going into work early I am morning. I can sleep late if I stay up late but I'm usually in bed between 10 and 11pm and I'm up, if it's not a work day by 6:30 or 7. If it's a work day I'm up between 5:30 and 6. I am part of the weekday Morning Denizens at HHW.

Never got John Wayne either, or Tom Cruise. There are others but no one pops to mind at the moment.

Wow, the gathering of the pacific northwest HHW group last night was a blast! I must say that DR JMK and his lovely wife Betsy were the most wonderful hosts. They made us feel so comfortable right off the bat and treated us as if we had been friends for years! JMK has a wonderful sense of humor and DS (dear spouse) was such a good sport to allow total strangers into her home and to actually make dinner for us too! We were even treated to some homemade Jewish bread (my first taste of Jewish food) and it was delicious!...and then there was DG (Dear Doggie) BG who was a most well behaved and beautiful pup! I really wanted to take him home...I do hope some pictures can be posted of him as you all must see how cute he is!!....also met JMKs kids Zack and Gabe...two of the most polite youngsters you will ever meet! We were even treated to a mini-concert by Maestro Gabe at the piano! I do think he has inherited some of his fathers musical talents!

Prior to the arrival of DRs Jane and George, JMK and I chatted on-line with DR JRand53 which was a lot of fun! Unfortunately, when DR Jane arrived we rather rudely dropped JRand53 like a hot potato! LOL! I hope he will forgive us for that!  ::)   I did suggest that we call JRand53 and hook him up to a speaker phone so that it would be like he was there with us!

And what can I say about DR Jane! I adored her before I met her and I adore her even more now that I have met her in person! What a doll...what a gal! Just a fine, beautiful (and I do mean beautiful) lady!

Last to arrive for the evening was DR George, straight from his adventures at the Antique Roadshow! It sounded like he had a lot of fun...or at least an interesting experience...at the Oregon Convention Center hauling his goodies in to be appraised! DR George is a super nice, and very smart guy and it was a treat to be able to meet him in person! It really is true that HHW people are some of the finest people around and I am so glad that we had this gathering!

We talked, we laughed, we dished the dirt, and we guffawed until we could no longer guffaw! And then we guffawed some more! LOL!

We played and fawned over doggie BG and listened to some Salsa Celtic music and told stories of our lives and jobs and families and discussed all sorts of things! We just had a nice, nice evening!

A big thanks to JMK and Betsy for hosting us..and for the lovely parting gifts (I made out like a bandit)...I am listening to some wonderful CDs of JMKs music right now which I am enjoying greatly!! And thanks to DR George for suggesting the gathering and for DR Jane for making the trip up to meet us all!

I really enjoy staying up until late at night...sometimes I get my second wind about midnight...but I don't like to sleep in too much so I am usually in bed by about 11 pm on weekends (10 pm on during the work week)...and besides as I get older I find it more and more difficult to stay up late anyhow!

I never got Lauren Bacall. She just never has appealed to me as an actress. Same with Katherine Hepburn. I enjoy John Wayne in his very, very early movie appearances in the early 1930s, but after he became popular it just seemed like he always played John Wayne (of course maybe I haven't seen enough of his films).

What torrential rains?? (is that a joke that I'm not getting or were there reports of rain when I wasn't here?)  Anyway, on the two-hour drive back to Olympia from Portland it just barely sprinkled every few miles and there was not much traffic.  And right now (in Olympia), it's somewhat sunny with clouds just floating across the sky.  Very nice.

The Antiques Roadshow was fun and at times boring and a little exciting and a little disappointing...all at once.  We (my friend Margo and I) got to the Oregon Convention Center at about 3:30 (our entrance time, and it turns out that we were part of the last group to be allowed in) and the hall looks like it’s the size of a football field...but inside!  So we get in the big, giant Disneyland-like line and we go back and fourth and back and fourth and back and fourth and back and fourth, etc., for two solid hours (this was the boring part)!  When we first got in line, almost the entire hall is filled, but only about a hundred people got in line after us.  Anyway, we go through all of this and finally get to the "generalist table" where a "generalist appraiser" will determine which specialist appraiser table (category) you should visit.  For the Stephen Foster collection of music, I was sent to the "Collectibles" table and for the ceramic mug that I got from my sister's ex-in-laws (they paid $2 for it at a garage sale), I was sent (appropriately) to the "Pottery & porcelain" table.

It must not have rained up your way George. It was raining pretty good when I drove back to Salem last night and it has been raining off and on all morning here in Salem (I hate driving in the rain on the freeway!)

My housemate just told me that it did rain here yesterday, "quite a bit, actually," but then I didn't drive at night.  The worst probably happened when I was asleep in Jeff & Betsy's basement...not driving. ::)

ANTIQUES ROADSHOW PART 2WO:

The fun and exciting part was seeing the appraisers who’ve been on TV.  My friend Margo had a writing table that her great-grandfather had made from a piano and a carved side table.  She spoke for a few minutes with Leigh Keno (longer than I spoke with both appraisers I went to...Margo is very personable)!

I got to my first appraiser and told him about my sheet music: that it was a numbered, limited edition set from 1933 of every piece of music written by Stephen Foster, that it was complete, that it was not stamped by the library that got it, and that a copy sold on eBay a month and a half ago.  He asked how much it sold for.  $300.  He said that because of the condition (very good) and that it’s complete, my set should be worth at least $500.  I figured that what I had was fairly unknown and not very much in demand as an actual "collectible," except by very specialized collectors.  His amount didn’t surprise me (but it was a little disappointing...I wanted it to be worth a LOT more...who wouldn't ;)).

The mug that I brought was a Staffordshire mug.  They (two appraisers looked at it) said that Staffordshire is much more known in England than in America, and subsequently, not as collectible or valuable in America.  However, they said that it was made in the 1940s or 1950s and is probably worth $75-$100 (up from $2 at a garage sale...pretty darned good, if you ask me).  If it’s put in an auction with knowledgeable collectors (as with anything), it could be worth more.

The other disappointing part was that I didn’t get taped to be on TV, although I did see myself on a TV monitor at one point...so there’s hope. ::)

After that, Margo and I found each other and I finally got to go to the bathroom.  We left the appraisal/taping area and took the elevator up the one flight to the street level exit and sat down on a couch that was right outside the elevator.  We had been standing for three solid hours...yes, it was now 6:30.  As other people came out of the elevator we’d ask what their stuff went for and many said what they expected. One woman said that the appraiser said “I don’t know what it is, but I’ll say it’s worth $100.”  What kind of appraisal is that?  That was the biggest disappointment...that moment of realization that the appraisers don’t know everything.  Not that I really expected them to know everything[/b].  However, it was fun and I’d certainly try to get tickets again.

When I sat down for my afternoon film, I found I just didn't feel like a Southern drama.  So, I plucked Shirley Temple's THE BLUE BIRD off the shelf and watched that instead. Hadn't seen it in ages, but like many Fox movies (even on videotape), they have repurposed the sound to make it stereo surround at least as far as the score is concerned. Too bad the still awe-inspiring forest fire sequence couldn't be rechanneled to the surrounds, but it IS a 1940 movie, and I'm just glad the elemnts were still in decent enough shape for this tape to be made. Maybe one day we'll see it on DVD.

I would like to get one of those new foam beds that is supposed to conform to your body and maybe I would sleep better.  Anyone have one of those? Are they hot to sleep on?  I would think foam would be.  Do you like it?

That is my favorite infomercial. The best part is when the baseball pitcher throws an egg at the mattress. I've been driving my mom crazy trying to figure out how to fit one of those things on my futon.

I'm not at all a morning person. M*A*S*H ends at one in the morning, so I get to sleep some time after that, about the time my mom is waking up. I don't know how I'm going to get myself out of futon early in the morning tomorrow when school starts.

And speaking of which, I had the first beginning of school nightmare of the season last night. I was on my way to class when I ran into Ariel, a friend I haven't seen in a few years. So I stopped to talk to Ariel and lost track of time. When I finally looked at a clock, I saw that I was 25 minutes late for class. So I ran to class and the teacher was really mad when I got there so late. When I tried to tell the teacher why I was late, he yelled at me so loudly that he startled me and I woke up. Then I couldn't get back to sleep.

I don't get all the hype about Ashton Kutcher, or whatever his name is.

As for the HHW Get Together at Jeff & Betsy's, it was everything that Mike and Jeff and Jane have already said.  We had a great time and much conversation was bandied about.  It's one thing to see small pictures of people on a computer and to read how each of us writes, but to actually sit in the same room with them is quite nice.  I highly recommend it to every and all. ;D Betsy had offered a Boca burger (among other things) of which I partook and the chocolate zucchini cake was very moist and good.  I've had (and love) zucchini bread, but this was different...and good.  I didn't have the challah bread because I was so engrossed in conversation, that I just forgot about it!  Sorry, Betsy!  Jeff and Betsy's two kids are very cute and well-behaved.  And BG the dog likes to lick things.  If you have a problem with dogs licking you, don't visit with BG.  But he's so cute!!  It really did feel like we had known each other.  I felt very much at home and comfortable.  We have to do this again...with Tom (TCB) and Ann and Jed, too!!

AM watching "Darby O'Gill and the Little People."

Disney put a special insert into the DVD stating that this film was shot 1:33:1 (i.e., full frame) and only exhibited widescreen by cropping.

I share this just in case anyone has wondered why it wasn't a widescreen release.

RLP: The insert in Darby O'Gill is peculiar.  All films (save for scope) are shot with a full aperture (unless they are hard-matted on the negative).  If Darby wasn't shot for television, then it was framed for theatrical exhibition at 1:85 and no amount of spin changes that.  The fact that the entire negative was exposed is meaningless - Nudie Musical can be shown with its full negative of 1:33 and if it is you see right over the top of sets, you see too much at the bottom of the frame (in one case ruining one of the film's most famous gags), and there is too much headroom in every shot.  Disney is doing a disservice with that insert - UNLESS the film was originally conceived for TV and then they decided it was good enough for theatrical showings.  That is the ONLY way the insert makes sense - it did happen occasionally, as with Don Siegel's The Killers - shot for TV but deemed too violent it went to theaters and was matted.

Hi Gang,

What a waste of an afternoon.  I had ordered the new Easy CD/DVD Creator 7 and received it this week so I was trying to hook my video camera up so I could burn a DVD of the footage I took of SLC and NYC.

I worked with it all afternoon but I could NOT get the computer to recognize the camera.  I think I finely figured out the problem.  I was trying to hook up the computer using a “S” Cable and I think (therefore I am confused) I need something called a “ i.LINK cable”.  If there was one that came with the camera, I couldn’t find it so it was E-bay to rescue once again.  I found one for my camera for the princely sum of $1.99.

I’ll just have to wait until it comes and then I’ll give it another go.  Sigh.

Glad to hear that the gathering when so well.   There will have to be a bigger one held someday and everyone will have to do their best to be there.  That would be such great fun!   :D

I heard a joke I want to pass along.

There is a man who refuses do anything to stock up his house when he hears that the hurricane is coming.  “The Lord will take care of me.”  He says.

His best friend, who lives next door, packs up his car and calls to him—“The Storm is coming!  You had better pack a bag and get in this car and we’ll make a run for it!”

“No,” says the man. “The Lord will take care of me.”

A little while later, a cop stops by and tells him the whole area is being evacuated and he had better leave now.  The man says, “No.  The Lord will take care of me.”

Well, the hurricane comes and floods the area and a man in a rowboat comes by.  “Get in the boat and I’ll take you to safety!”  The man says, “No.  The Lord will take care of me.”

The water rises and the man has to climb up to the roof of his house.  A news helicopter happens to fly by, sees the man on the room and drops him a ladder but he won’t climb up!  “The Lord will take care of me.”

Well, the man drowns and goes to Heaven.  He is very upset with God and tells him, “I had faith that you would take care of me!  Why did you let me drown?!”

The Lord replies, “I sent you your best friend, a cop, a man in a rowboat and a helicopter to save you—what else did you want me to do?!”

I finally have gone through my cds that I have decided to get rid of in round one. The majority of them are Broadway and the rest are vocals/theater releated. I haven't made a list yet, but if BK okays this I will offer them to all the DR on this board first before I put them up on EBAY. They are all original cds. None of them are dupes. Some of them might have writing in the booklets as they were used for a radio show I had before I moved down here. Some do not (maybe ten or so) do not have a booklet. So if you are interested me email me and I will send you a list.

For the studio to go to the trouble of placing that insert into DVDs of DARBY, Disney must have been sent a boatload of complaints about the aspect ratio of the film once it was announced months ago that it was going to be a full frame release. The film was most definitely shot for theatrical distribution.

So, have you watched it yet, DR RLP? How did it look? Did you think there was too much head room or were the sides cropped and the people in the frame looking cramped?

THIS PROPERTY IS CONDEMNED certainly looked good, a lovely transfer. But brother is this movie a talk fest of not aprticularly interesting talk. I guess after seeing almost all of Tennessee Williams' great ladies on the screen prior to the release of this film, Natalie Wood's Alva seems like warmed-over Southern mush. She and Redford look simply smashing, but neither does a very good Southern accent, and the film ends up seeming to be much ado about nothing.

Dan-in-Toronto's cousin is Betsy's and my Rabbi here in Portland!!  I've known Dan's cousin for probably 20+ years, and Betsy and I have been members of his congregation (which is relatively new) for the past several years.  Betsy is in fact on the Temple Council and several committees with Dan's cousin!!  Isn't that unbelievable?

Is there any movie star, past or present, that you've never been a big fan of. For me the question is easy: Gary Cooper.

I went to see Mean Creek today, Dear Readers.  This is a new film written and directed by Jacob Aaron Estes (someone I've not heard of before.)

The crux of the story involves an act of revenge on a schoolyard bully and how children and teenagers (and one adolescent on the verge of adulthood) respond to a trying situation.  (I've seen the film referred to in the press as a "morality tale.")  The tension level is set high early in the film and is sustained throughout.

Although Estes could have easily slipped into writing and/or directing the film's subjects as unidimensional stock characters, he in fact provides each role with considerable dimension and complexity.

The two actors playing the youngest characters, Rory Culkin and Carly Schroeder, do a rather amazing job.  Scott Mechlowicz, as the incipient adult, stands out as well.

The NW HHW gathering sounds wonderful, and everyone looks great in the pictures!  Thanks for posting about it.

I am still recovering from quite a scare that occured a few hours ago.  My sister and I were sitting on a ledge near Lincoln Center reading various free newspapers when a boy (probably about nine years old) ran over and shoved an enormous live rat right in my face.  I screamed and tried to run, but this damn kid kept shoving the rat at me, trying to touch me with it.  My sister and I ran, shouting obscenities all the way, for about half a block while being chased by this kid and and his rat til I realized that I had forgotten my purse and went back to get it.  At this point, I gave up on shouting obscenities at the child and turned my attentions to his mother, who stood there looking terribly amused by her horrible child who likes to play with dirty rodents and use them to terrorize people.  I know that I over-reacted, but I was in a bad mood to start and nothing is as scary as the prospect of being touched by a rat.  ::Shudders::

I need to thank the wonderful BK, because I just realized that he produced my all time favorite CD, the Trotter Trio "Follies" jazz CD!  And then I realized that the Trotter Trio made many Sondheim jazz CDs that were produced by none other than our own BK!  So thank you, oh wonderful Bruce, for producing some of the greatest CDs I've ever heard. :)

I have done the Sunday evening drive from Orange County.  There's nothing quite as pleasurable as sitting in bumper to bumper traffic at 11:30 at night, which is precisely the experience Dear BK is about to have.  I therefore can guarantee that he will be delayed beyond his usual midnight cut-off, providing us more time to boost the post count.  Or post duke.  Or post earl.  Or even post duke of earl.

What the hell am I talking about?

The only difference is that bk has a driver and can relax. Also, I believe the show starts earlier on a Sunday, so the drive may not be an 11:30 one.
All of this to say that we have a finite amount of time to avoid the dreaded ATL. Cissboombah.

Tha mug is spooky, DR George!

I suppose that from this one picture you could think that but if you could hold it and look all around it, it's actually kind of cute...quaint, really.  I just didn't think about taking pictures from different angles.  I took one other picture of it at a slightly lower angle.  There is much more of a reflection under the brim of the hat that reflects the eyes that it looks like it has two pairs of eyes!  That was kind of spooky!

It looked absolutely perfect to me.  There was never any evidence of anyone or anything being out of frame talking or doing something.  Unlike full-frame films that scream out that they were shot in a wide format, I was totally unaware of anything being amiss.

There were, some tightly framed shots inside the pub where Darby tells his stories about King Brian that seemed like something would definitely have suffered had they been cropped for a widescreen effect.  But I confess ignorance about these things, in general, except when the "obvious" rears its ugly head.

As for my day off today...

I was dropped off in West Hollywood - or WeHo, if you prefer - to, as I jokingly commented, "be among my people".  ;)

It was a gorgeous day - lots of sun, and not too hot.  But it was hot enough for the "citizens" of WeHo to walk around showing off their suntans and the benefits of working out at the gym.  I just walked up and down Santa Monica Blvd for about hour, checking out the scene.  AND I noticed posters for What If? posted here in there in many a shop window!

I think there is some kind of belief held by our esteemed host that the ATL must be beaten before midnight, even if the Notes go up late. So, as I said, we have righted the wrong, saved the world, brought back equilibrium. We can now relax and get back to our daily lives, knowing once again that Good has triumphed over the Forces of Darkness.

Then I made my way up Fairfax to Sunset Blvd where I proceeded to catch the Number 2 Bus to downtown.  Quite the cross section of Los Angelenos riding with me.  And the bus ride provided me with another "tour" of L.A.'s various neighborhoods.

Then it was downtown to Macy's.  The mission: To buy a few shirts.

Well, as soon as I walked in, I stopped at the watch counter and bought a new watch for when I go jogging (this week, I hope).  I kept looking at and was tempted by some of the fancier and more expensive models and brands, but once I realized that I did need a new sports watch, I settled on a basic Timex.  Hopefully, I'll put it to good use soon.

Then came the clothes...  Well, I'll spare you all the boring - and kind of frustrating details - but after spending nearly three hours(!) trying on shirts, I walked out of Macy's with... The watch!

I kept quoting Dot from Sunday in the Park with George, "Nothing seems to fit me right."  I must have made at least six or seven trips to the fitting rooms, with at least four or five shirts in hand each time.  And each time I walked out of the fitting rooms, I proceeded to put all the shirts back.  -I was even beginning to worry that the store security staff would come after me.

It was either too big.  Too small.  Too baggy.  Not baggy enough.  The shirt collar didn't work with my face.  My face didn't work with the shirt collar.  The pattern didn't look good on me.  Etc., etc., etc.  And towards the end of my three hours, I even thought I found some sure bets - sure enough that I wasn't going to try them on... Thankfully, I did.  There were no  gos.

I seem to be between what most clothes manufacturers sell as L(arge) and XL.  Which I guess is a good thing, since I could never even consider buying L's until about two years ago.  But boy was I making myself crazy with each trip to and from the fitting rooms.  There were some "high maybes", and I may have to go back and give them a second chance, but, I've learned that if I feel an ambivalence about a piece of clothing when I buy it, I end up regretting buying it once I get it home and try it on in the "real world".  Ah, well...

Then it was back on the Metro up to Hollywood and Vine.  Walked up to Hollywood and Highland.  Checked out the Kodak Theatre compley - WOW!  Lots of stuff and stores crammed into that piece of real estate.  And I had to laugh at some of the celebrity look-alikes that were on the sidewalk in front of the Chinese Theatre - I guess all you need to be a look-alike now is the right costume and the right hair color.  Heck, even the Elmo" from "Sesame Street" didn't really look that much like Elmo from "Sesame Street".  -The costume looked like one for the Cookie Monster that had been dyed red.  ;)

I bought my postcards - which I need to write and stamp before heading to bed tonight.  Then I Metro'd back to the homestead.

And thus completes my day - more or less - and my "passel of posts" for this evening.

Exciting stuff, huh?

Ah, well...

Well, with stories of bus trips and frustrating shirt shopping expeditions and road show adventures, etc, we've managed to post quite a respectable number of posts for a lazy Sunday. I, for one, was not being lazy. As I said earlier, I was working. One of these days I may even get a day off. My boss is a bitch, though. She never gives me time off. I'll get a little non-writing time tomorrow morning when I have the pleasure of going to the dentist. It's just a regular cleaning appointment, but I've been unable to chew on one side for quite some time -- which may be a clue that something is wrong. I am not looking forward to the visit.

Hmm...  Well, maybe we could duel with squirt guns!  Or water balloons!  Or we could be a bit more genteel and each of could bring in a favorite pastry, pie, etc., and then we could have a "taste off"!  Hmmm....

Jose, what's the possibility of you snagging a poster for me??  Are there different sizes?  I'd be more than willing to pay for shipping!

Well, considering Tammy ordered about 2400(!) posters for the show...  I'm sure I can snag you one or two or...  -It was one of those strange but true deals in the land of printing where once you hit a certain quantity, the price actually starts to drop.  If I recall correctly, the price for 2400 posters was actually cheaper then the price for 1000 posters - or something strange like that.

When I used to do graphic layout work for a small opera company in DC, I would always get these "deals" from the printers.  Apparently, it has something to do with how the new printing presses are programmed and how many packages of paper have to be opened - and counted, or not counted if you're using a full ream.  In any case...

The size of the poster looks like to be the size of a standard window card - whatever that is - sorry, I don't have a ruler right now, and I can't remember what standard window card size is right now either.  The one "drawback" is that the posters are printed on standard glossy stock, and not card stock, so they're a bit "flimsy".  To get them shipped to you - or any other DR - would require a mailing tube.  So...

I'm sending out some postcards and posters this week.  if you PM me your mailing info, I'll try my best to get something in the mail to you this week.  And if not this week, most definitely by the end of next week.

DR George (and other interested DRs) - I just checked the poster... It measures 11"x17" - It was easy to measure since I had an 8-1/2"x11" piece of paper handy.  So, that's the size.

And now that I think of it, I think standard window card size if 14x22 - ???
