Title: THE UNSEEMLY HUM

Well, you've read the notes, you've hummed the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come humming home.

Speaking of unseemly hums - I was about to go to bed, but I do believe there's a cricket INSIDE my home environment. A cricket inside my home environment will drive me crazy. No "perhaps" in that sentence. It WILL drive me nuts. So there had better not be a cricket in here.

I would actually like to ask bk a question and hopefully it isn't too odd. I have Bedknobs and Broomsticks on DVD (30th Anniversary Edition) and was watching the extras. I was suprised to learn about the 25 minutes being cut and a few songs being added to the DVD. I was just wondering what you feelings on the DVD were compared to the original release in theatres. I suppose this can be open to everyone if it interests them.

Good Evening!  Good Morning!

Hmmm.. I actually have a question for Ask BK Day today... But I guess it could be a question for every DR here on HHW... And I actually, I will probably be asking this question of myself for a while...

Why did I go see The Ten Commandments - A New Musical tonight?!?!?!?

Yes, fellow DRs, I went to see The Ten.

Normally, I would reserve posting my comments about a new show until after it opens, but in this case...  If you wish to stop reading right now, you may do so.  Otherwise...

There is so much I could say about the show right now.  Unfortunately, none of it would be good.  It was so bad - at least to me - that it wasn't even boring.  Even the people who were sitting next to me and around me did not clap during the curtain call.  Of course, it actually took a few minutes to realize that the curtain call was actually taking place.

Yes, it was the first preview, the first public performance of the show, so there were bound to be a few technical, musical and staging glitches.  A few.  But when the first five numbers started with no lights on the soloist - making the audience start wondering who the heck was singing - well, then...  Didn't they delay this first preview by a week in order to take care of technical issues?  I could just imagine the Vari-Light programmer getting fired midway through the first act with all the glitches that were very evident from the audiences point of view.

As for the "big, amazing, spectacular special effects"... Well, if there were supposed to be some in the show, I didn't notice any.  However, I did notice that two of the plague "effects" didn't work.  And as for the parting of the Red Sea and the subsequent drowning of the Pharoah's army... Well, there's not a single drop of water on stage.  There's a torrent of waves on the projection screen behind the actors, but none on stage.  Come on!  Even Phantom on the Opera has an underground lake!

I think the most grievous omission is that Moses is never seen receiving the Ten Commandments from God.  Instead, the time is spent watching an MTV-style orgy take place on stage in front of a Golden Calf that you can tell is going to crack apart since it comes on cracked.  -And leaves "cracked" as you watch two ensemble members trying their hardest to push the clunky set pieces off stage.  And who knew that stone slabs could bounce?  And that they could be easily picked up moments later by a young boy? -who then "sings" the commandments.  However, he doesn't just sing the commandments, he rewords them in a positive manner.  So, instead of "Thou shalt not lie", we now get, "We shall all tell the truth".  Ehh.

Choreographically speaking... Well, the whole show is one long music video, and it looks choreographed that way.  Unfortunately, choreographing for the camera and choreographing for a cavernous stage space are two, vastly different things.  I'll leave it at that.  *Oh, DR MBarnum - there actually seemed to a Bollywood section during the wedding dance!  ;)

Musically speaking... Well, just start the drum machine and let it keep going... and going... and going...  And since it's a "pop" score, a lot of the songs have those "big-small" endings - the ones where a lot of stuff starts happening, then it just ends on a hushed chord.  In other words, no button.  Listening to a CD that can work.  Watching a music video that can work.  But when you have five of those endings in a row, the audience begins to wonder if and when they should be clapping.  The only "cue" to start clapping is that the people on stage have stopped gyrating their hips, and making those vaguely Egyptian poses with the arms and hands.

"Favorite" lyrics of the evening:
-Love is thicker than blood.
-He's so fine (which is sung when Zipporah first lays her eyes on Moses)
-Have you come back home from the desert without a brain?  (Or something very close to that - of course, the ryhme for brain in the previous line was "insane")

There were a couple of groaners - and, trust me, I was not the only one in the audience groaning... audibly... But I think those lyrics are best left to float away in the ether and not in my brain.

As for the performances...
Title: Re:THE UNSEEMLY HUM
Post by: JoseSPiano on September 22, 2004, 01:07:22 AM
As for the performers... Here I will be kind...

I felt most sorry for one of my former students who turned out to be in the show.  When I surprised him at the stage door, he leaned over to me and whispered, "Just call me, and I'll tell you what was supposed to happen on stage."  Thankfully, he didn't ask me if I liked the show.  I think he could tell that I was not at all impressed.  And, frankly, I think he knew not to ask.

However, the amount of mock sincerity at the Stage Door was quite abundant.  Unfortunately, there seemed to be a good amount of true sincerity, and "I really loved it!" being expressed.

I happened to see almost all the leads and supporting leads leave the stage door.  -Mr. Kilmer was the only one I did not see leave, and I wasn't going to wait for him either - and he probably leaves through the back way anyway.  I won't list the names of those involved, but there were more than a few people coming out of that stage door with their heads low, making a beeline for the parking lot.  I guess there's some "comfort" being so far away from the audience - even when your in the front part of the orchestra section - that no one can really make out your face.

As for Mr. Kilmer's performance... All I'll say for now is that I think he's using way too much Egyptian No. 5 makeup base.  But I think part of the darker makeup is used to "disguise" his lack of a six-pack - which happen to be in abundance on stage.  And I even think there was a "dancing Moses" brought in for one of the wedding dance sequences.  ???

Well, I could go on an on, but...
Title: Re:THE UNSEEMLY HUM
Post by: JoseSPiano on September 22, 2004, 01:41:57 AM
I could go on and on, but since I have to be up early(!) - UGH! - I will stop.  For now.  If any DR would like some specifics, feel free to ask, and I'll try my best to answer.

I'm really not sure exactly how I feel about the show to tell the truth.  Yes, it was bad.  Could it better?  I don't think so.  There are just so many missed opportunities, so many bad choices, so many lapses of taste.  And, apparently, the Opening/Press Night is next week.  Hmmm...

The show will definitely not advance the current "state" of musical theatre.  And I don't think it will really hurt musical theatre since it's not really a musical theatre piece.  As for the show being a "spectacle"... Well, it probably is, but not in the sense that the creators and producers mean it to be.

As I stated before, there were a bunch of people around me not clapping at the end.  In fact, the gentleman next to me didn't clap the entire second act.  Neither did I.  I couldn't even "pity clap" for some of the Broadway veterans and Broadway gypsies on that stage.  But as I was looking down at the orchestra section, there was a good portion of the audience standing up.  And I also noticed that some of the people standing had "All Access" badges hanging around their necks.  In other words, they're with the production.

Oh, some final observations - for now:

-The longest bio in the program - which is like a souvenir program, but it's free - is the one for the casting agent.  He lists the various casting awards he's received.  Then starting with his movie work, then moving on to television and theatre, he lists the titles of the projects he has cast.  Then in parantheses are listed the major actors and actresses he cast in each project.  The whole "bio" takes up one whole column - a half page! - plus a few more lines.  Val Kilmer's bio is shorter!

-In bold type on the title page, there is a credit for: "Original Idea by"  Hmm... The original idea for the Bible? ;)

-The Choreographer and Executive Music Producer are given better billing than the Conductor/Music Director.

-The orchestra is comprised of Three Synths, Bass, Drums, Two Percussionists, Guitar, EVI (basically, a "wind" synth), and a String Quartet (two violins, viola and cello).

-Besides the usually TV monitors used nowadays so that the cast can see the off-stage conductor, there is also a teleprompter for the actors to use for their lyrics.  Now if they can just move the guy who has the laptop with the scrolling going on in front of him from his space right in front of the stage... in view of the whole audience!...

-The stage director - or someone else with a pair of eyes - also needs to watch the show from the various mezzanine levels.  Seeing such things as the stagehand plug the gas line in for the burning bush is most disconcerting.  Or the various other stagehands crawling from the "hole" upstage in order to position and reposition various set pieces.

-The "Community Outreach" agency has apparently given away blocks of 100 to 500(!) seats to various groups (schools, churches, synagogues, etc.) throughout the opening weeks of the run.  And a portion of those "blocks" are in the main orchestra section.  The $127.50 a seat section!  Nothing like stacking your audience.  *I just heard whispers about this from various people, so I may be wrong.  If so, I'm sorry.

-Favorite overheard pre-intermission comment: "Why are the lights coming up?  Was that it?"

-Favorite overheard during-intermission comment: "OK - You don't need to say a word... I'm sorry."

-Next favorite overheard during-intermission comment: "Sesame Street Live was so much better than this."

-Favorite post-show audience comment: "Hey, you know it was bad when even I fell asleep during the show!"

And finally...  As I was waiting on the Metro platform at Hollywood+Highland, I noticed two of the ensemble members waiting for the train to North Hollywood.  They were reading a "tabloid".  Backstage West.  The audition notices.

:(

To quote Evita: Have I said too much?

As I stated, I usually reserve posting any comments and opinions until after a show has opened and after others have seen it.  However, in this case, I'm not feeling any guilt about posting.  Some trepidation, yes, just in case some of the cast members happen to be lurkers.

I'm sure there were others there tonight that will be posting their thoughts on other sites.  And I'm guessing - and probably guessing correctly - that my comments will be "kind" in comparison.

Unfortunately - although fortunately for some - since the producer has deep pockets, and since the show is already booked to play Radio City Music Hall next year, the show will most likely end up critic-proof.  By the time all the latecomers(!) were seated, the Kodak Theatre looked quite full.

OH!  I can say something positive about tonight... The Kodak Theatre is big.  BIG!!!  The lobby areas have some wonderful poster-sized photos of various Oscar winners receiving their Oscars.  Just walking by those pics, and seeing those faces is enough to remind you that show business can still be about the "show" at times.

DR Jose, I love your report on The Ten Commandments and think BK has provided a great title for your assessment, The Unseemly Hum.  I don't think you've said a word the performers would be troubled by.

DR Panni: Math may not be your strong suit.  The ATL (All Time Low in Internet lingo) is no longer 137.  As of last week, we set a new All Time Low at 121, barely on the fifth page.  I don't see the point of cheerleading us past the former ATL of 137, especially if you're doing it without pictures.  (I know, everything, including those nekid pictures, is at the cleaners.)

Ask BK: Is there any sort of timetable on your new mystery novel?  Like when it will be published?  In book stores?

DR Jose:

I enjoyed reading your thoughts on "The Ten Commandments."  Sounds like it could be a camp classic.

$127.50 for orchestra seats!!  Escalating ticket prices are getting out of hand.  And producers wonder why it is so hard to convince people to go to the theatre regularly.

DR Jose....what a fabulous review!  If only the show was that good.  As Ken Mandlebaum has said: "Not since CARRIE...." (Which, yes, I did see....)

Can I just state how pleased I was about the winners of The Amazing Race?  Not meant to be a spoiler, but if you have paid attention to who I was rooting for, you might have some idea.  Or at least be able to figure out who didn't win.

As for BB5, it always seems so anti-climactic when they announce the winner.  It always has seemed that way to me, for some reason.

For Ask BK Day:

You mentioned that you store your CDs in alphabetical order.  What happens when you get a couple of new ones beginning with A or B?  Do you have to shift everything or have you left a lot of room on each shelf?  Let me tell you my solution: I used to have to shift everything from time to time when I got new titles that there was no room for.  Since I was listing my whole collection on the computer anyway, I decided to number each title, keeping the list alphabetical with the number indicated, but keeping the actual CDs in numerical order (with a small removable label that has the number on it).  If I am looking for something, I consult my list, find the number and it is then very easy to find the CD.  I no longer have to keep space open on each shelf or shift CDs around everytime I get a new title.

I, for one, am completely ignoring the new ATL number.  121 is a vulgar number, easily obtained and unstylish--like wearing white after Labor Day.  136 (the actual last ATL number), on the other hand, is sleek and challenging, smartly cut at the waist, and has a classic styling that goes well with any topic.

Title: Re:THE UNSEEMLY HUM

Last night, after I signed off, DR Dan (the Man) asked me: "DR Matt, have you gotten the Star Wars set yet?  I'm still up in the air about it.  I'm disappointed that Lucas decided not to release the films as they were originally released."

I haven't bought them yet. I'm thinking now I will find a used set and let that do me until the films are relased in five years or so in high definition editions. BTW, I really think holding back the originals is a marketing ploy on Lucasfilms' part. Eventually the new versions of the films will be reissued with the originals on another disc, and lots of people will want to buy them all over again.

I have the original films on laserdisc and can see them that way if I'm really nostalgic to see the original effects and a Dolby Surround track that's not Dolby Digital 5.1. But I guess I'm not fanatical about the films to be able to notice most of the changes that have been instituted.

Received a nice e-mail from my brother Jeff in Iraq. He is getting settled in very nicely. He is a Federal Government employee with the Army Corp of Engineers working as, he says, the Tikrit Area Engineer Manager. I think he is living in some palace or something and he is just 2 hours away from our nephew Jeffrey’s National Guard Unit...although he doubts that he will have an opportunity to see little Jeffrey.

Jeff is working with a lot of Iraqi engineers building, or rebuilding, power stations, etc. He really enjoys working with the Iraqi people who are basically putting their lives on the line in working with the American’s.

Anyway, it sounds like he is doing fine so that is a relief.

A marvelous review - and now it becomes a must-see for me.  The only way people learn not to do junk like this is for the show to fail majorly.  They obviously have the deepest pockets imaginable (the producers are clothing designers - did they think they would start a biblical trend), and they have Val Kilmer, but there comes a point at which you cannot fool all the people all the time.

I don't much like the practice, but I suppose if it's fun for them and they wish to do it, then it's fine.  The key thing, however, is that the original version should always be included and available, which is sadly not the case with the Star Wars films and with Close Encounters (which has never been as good as it was on its initial release).

Here's something kind of unusual.  I am listening to Brasilian techno-Bossa singer Cibelle's S/T CD, and I do believe she has sampled Elmer Bernstein's Theme from Hawaii.  Isn't that peculiar?  I'm pretty sure it's a 6 second or so snippet from the main theme--I'll have to go back and listen to the soundtrack today, but that was what immediately popped into my head when it played.

I'm going to talk about The Amazin Race show contestants on The Early Show today.  But I know MBarnum hasn't seen the show yet.  So no spoilers about the winners.

Anyhow, all of the four top teams were on The Eartly show today (the bowling moms, Nicole/Brandon, Chip/Kim, Colin/Christie).

The host was talking to Colin about how they were edited.  And Colin said that Christie was not the passive submissive girl they showed.  And he also said that they really edited him to be the bad guy.

One example was from last week's show.  The famous ox scene, where he threw a tantrum.  Everyone was so angry with him for that.  Anyhow they showed the footage of him fuming and then screaming out, "i hate you", then they showed christie.  Well in reality christie wasn't anywhere near him and he was saying it to the ox.

Anyhow colin then goes on to say how christie is the best thing that ever happened to him.  And that he was the luckiest guy in the world. And then he asked her to marry him.

Okay I know most of you guys don't like him, but it was so touching.

Oh and re: BB5. Wow they raced through that show.

I was actually pretty right on with my predictions. I said 4-3 for Drew.  And I said that Cowboy would get adria/nat/will.  I only got will and jen mixed up.  But hey that wasn't my fault since SHE DID SAY she wouldn't vote for her bro.

I was happy that she did though.  After she said that blood was most important to her, I'm glad she followed up by voting for her bro.

I enjoyed last nights BB5 and I am always happy when they reveal the winner...for some reason it makes me a bit emotional.

There are just a few rather bitter people from that show, which is too bad...they really take it all way too seriously...and what was with all the makeup that Jase had on! Good grief!

I did think that the questions that the jury asked were rather lame...but not as lame as the answers! I would proably say that the reason I should win is "because I have been in the dang house for 3 months and I really want the money!" LOL!

Good Morning!

BK - If you want to see the show, tickets are available on Goldstar for $37.00, I think.  I managed to snag a freebie last night from someone I know who worked on the production behind-the-scenes early on, but has/had absolutely no desire to see the show in person.  There's bound to be someone around these parts with fistfulls of comps.

Personally, a part of me wants to go back and see the show again after it has settled, and all the technical glitches have been worked out.  And when all the "spectacular effects" are actually working.  I just want to see if there's anything actually "good" which would make the show worth doing for those actors and actresses on stage.

But another part of me just wants to stay away from the Kodak theatre.  Far, far away.

The cast runs the gamut: the movie star, Broadway veterans, chorus gypsies, Los Angeles stage favorites, "famous" recording artists, back-up dancers (for people like Madonna, Cher, P Diddy, etc.), former child stars, child stars in the making(?), etc... even a Certified Massage Therapist according to one performer's bio.  There are also a couple of "this is my first (or second) major job" performers.  I always wish performers well.  It's just unfortunate at this time that I feel that all the well-wishes in world on my behalf - and others - would have absolutely no effect.  So, maybe it's good for them that it might end up being critic proof.  But if the critics do end up having their say, and the show ends up folding, well...  May their next endeavor be more worth while.

Michael, that is the vocal group of German orchestra leader Horst Jankowski who charted here in the U.S. (#1 Adult Contemporary as well as #12 Pop Charts) with "A Walk in the Black Forest."  There are some compilation CDs I found doing a cursory Google with his stuff on them.  Ebay also has several items available.

Well, it's still before 10:00AM here in L.A., and I've already trekked out and about!  I was up at 6:30(!), and out the door by 7:00.  I had to head over to my cousin Angie's place to pick up a set of keys for her apartment.  I'll be heading over there this afternoon for the next few days.  My friend, Chris, is heading back East for some work, and since his lease and landlord do not allow guests to stay in his apartment when he is not here...

Originally, I was going to spend the next few days being hosted by the choreographer of What If?, since Angie wasn't originally going to be able to host me.  But due to a last minute change of plans - I got the call right before I headed into the Kodak last night - I will be now be able to check out the Wilshire "Miracle Mile" area.  And the nearby Koreatown too!  And since Chris will be back on Saturday, I'll just pack my small bag for the next few days.  I won't have to lug my two pieces of luggage across town!  Yippee!  And then I'll just head back over here on Saturday when Chris gets back into town.

Did that make sense?

I've been kind of stressing the past couple of days over this last-minute change of venue, as it were.  But now.... Whew!  I truly have had someone looking out for me during my time out here in L.A.  Thank You!

Getting engaged on national television is not sweet... it's tacky and ewwy.

Eww Colin Ewww.  And what was up with his hair btw? Double ewww.

Today = sister #1's birthday.  I'm getting her a wine ice bucket because that is what she asked for.  Is it in bad taste to bring her the bucket without any wine? :)

I'm still achy from the paddling on Monday night.  Something about the cold and the tougher boat-mates made my back spaz up.  Is that how one writes "spaz"? Do spasms spas? mmmmm...

DR Jose, your review of T10C reminded me of why I didn't go see the original French version when it played here.  When the Montreal Gazette's theatre critic makes fun of a production, you know it's gotta be reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal bad.

I don't think that getting engaged on tv is tacky.  I think it depends on the couple.  If a more private proposal would have been what Christie would have wanted, then I would say do that.  But I personally thought Colin's proposal was sweet and not the least bit "ewww".

Well, dear people, I've made a decision and acted on it. I'm going to leave the home environment in a big way for two whole whole weeks at the end of October. I'm going to Budapest and Rome! I was invited a while back to take part in and speak at a media conference in Rome -- which I sort of put into the back of my head. But I haven't visited the old hometown for many years and DD really would love it if I could visit and she could show me around (how strange!). So I decided this morning that if I could get a good price, I'd book it and go. The price isn't too bad and to go from Budapest to Rome is cheap. It won't cost me anything to stay in BP (DD has a guest bed) and I've been told that my expenses in Rome might be covered. So - it's done. I'm booked.
BTW - part of the conference in Rome is a tour of Cinecitta!

I had my eye checked about a year and a half ago. This deterioration happened FAST. I've had a stressful 18 months - so that probably contributed.
Nothing needs to be done about the scar tissue. I'll just forget about it.
I'll get to wear my cool new glasses in Europe!

I went to see Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow yesterday evening, Dear Readers.  This is the film that was shot almost entirely in front of blue screens, with computer generated imagery used to fill in the frame around the actors.

I would say the success of the technical wizardry makes this film worth seeing.  The "look" of the film is some blend and/or variety of old newsreels, sepia-toned silent film and, in the case of the actors, hand-colored black and white photos.  Film noir and action/adventure serials of the 'thirties and 'forties are evoked as well.  Some of the shots are downright breathtaking.

Beyond sets and atmosphere, CGI is used to create monster-machines that terrorize Earth and, in particular, our protagonists, played by Mr. Jude Law and Miss Gwyneth Paltrow.

The story of SCatWoT is rather conventional.  Guy and girl who constantly bicker but are madly in love with each other chase down a mad scientist determined to destroy the world.  In this case, the guy is a dashing aerialist and the gal a smart-talking journalist.

I should mention that the mad scientist is played, if that is the proper word, by Sir Lawrence Olivier.  That is not a typo.  The magicians behind this film pieced together a performance by the late actor.  He even gets a billing in the credits after the movie.

I don't much like the practice, but I suppose if it's fun for them and they wish to do it, then it's fine.  The key thing, however, is that the original version should always be included and available, which is sadly not the case with the Star Wars films and with Close Encounters (which has never been as good as it was on its initial release).

Thank you, thank you, thank you, BK; I thought I was the only person who felt that way.

One thing I forgot to mention in my non-spoiler post earlier (and this is also a non-spoiler) was the lovely, ethereal "cinematography" that was used each and every time either Brandon or Nicole uttered the words Jesus, Lord, G-d, Heaven, etc. on last night's episode.

The first time they did it, I laughed, but by the time the last one rolled around, I was practically on the floor in hysterics.  It was very very funny.  To me, at least.

I am sure that by the time the race was over the camera operator assigned to that team must have had it with their (Brandon & Nic's) religiosity.

For my DVD this afternoon, I selected NOISES OFF! Looks wonderful on DVD with a very sharp picture and deeply saturated color.

I've often wondered, however, if Christopher Reeve and especially John Ritter were deliberately doing poor British accents on purpose (possibly to portray the actors they're playing as being second-rate) or was that merely the best they could come up with.

There's always room for another Krispy Kreme!  -They're 90% air anyway! ;)

As for microwaving Krispy Kremes... Yes!  And I believe the boxes have microwaving instructions on them now too - for that "fresh from the fryer" taste!

I also sometimes warm them in a toaster oven for a few minutes, then hit the "Toast" button until the sugar glaze starts to bubble.  *This also works with leftover pancakes that have been spread with butter and syrup.

And I've mentioned it before, but just in case... There's a diner in Richmond called "The 3rd Street Diner" since it's a diner and it's on 3rd Street - 3rd and Main to be exact.  Well, they have something called "Grilled D's".

You simply take a day old Krispy Kreme Glazed donut(s), and "warm" in up in a skillet or on a griddle in melted pat of butter - or two.  If the heat is just right, you can sometimes get a light caramelization of the sugar glaze!

And then if you want to have something really special, just place the still warm Grilled D in a shallow bowl.  Then top it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce (hot fudge, if you prefer), whipped cream and a maraschino cherry (mais, bien sur!), and Voila!  -You now have a Grilled D Sundae!

-Don't forget the Tums!

I am also one who prefers the original versions of Star Wars #s IV, V and VI (and I have the remastered original versions on video).  However, there's an article on CNN.com (and everywhere else, I'm sure) where GL explains why he doesn't want to release the old versions.  Click HERE (http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Movies/09/20/film.qa.george.lucas.ap/index.html) to read the full article.  It's very informative and I can totally understand his side of it...I don't agree ::), but I understand.  Here's a quote from the article:

Q: Why not release both the originals and special editions on DVD?

LUCAS: The special edition, that's the one I wanted out there. The other movie, it's on VHS, if anybody wants it. ...

I'm not going to spend the, we're talking millions of dollars here, the money and the time to refurbish that, because to me, it doesn't really exist anymore. It's like this is the movie I wanted it to be, and I'm sorry you saw half a completed film and fell in love with it. But I want it to be the way I want it to be.

He goes on:

I'm the one who has to take responsibility for it. I'm the one who has to have everybody throw rocks at me all the time, so at least if they're going to throw rocks at me, they're going to throw rocks at me for something I love rather than something I think is not very good, or at least something I think is not finished.

Whew!

Hello DRTCB!

Happy Birthday (late) to DRLAURA and to DR MKRLD....

DRPANNI what a great trip you have planned!  Work and a vacation, how wonderful.  Hopefully you will have computer access or at least will take TONS of pictures.  The weather should be lovely and the tourists should be sparse!

Russ Meyer...oh, yes....faster pussycat, Kill Kill!!!  I will raise a glass to Mr Meyer and give him the toast I learned here at HHW yesterday:

TO YOUR ENTIRE ASS!!!  It's an old Hungarian saying!

DRJOSE thank you so much for your take on The Ten Commandments.  How enlightening and exciting to hear from someone who was there!  Of course, it will have its champions, but it sounds like pretty much of a mess and a misfire.  Who is the muscle?  Is it the star, the writers, the director, the producers?  Who made it so bad?

Thank you TCB and Panni.

Hi TCB.  I'm so happy you could join us.  You must do laundry at your friend's more often.

TCB, someone recently mentioned on here that Tiger Cruise will be on again on Sept 30.  Hopefully, my sister will tape it for me again, this time without missing the first 25 minutes.

It was on again two nights ago. I don't see it listed on the 30th as was mentioned, but I'll let you know if I see something.

Bogie doesn’t feel well at all.  I’m going to take the new soft, gel ice pack I purchased today for my back and keep him company.

Dan (the Man) that was me, and TIGER CRUISE was on September 20th.   Yes, my back is still hurting from moving the TV.  Keith had the carpet installer help him put it back.  I wouldn’t want one of those chairs but I did make an appointment for a massage on Monday.

Danise and Michael Shayne are safe.  MS went to L.A. during his big hurricane. :D

I must go.  TCB I'm so sorry I can't stay and visit with you.  :(

And I've heard him referred to elsewhere as Darth Lukas.  Fitting, I think.

AOL wouldn't let me post yesterday.  So, in a nutshell:

I don't like windchimes.  There's always one that is just a little out of tune, and gets on my nerves.

I like windsocks and banners.  They're colorful, and quieter.

As for kitchen tables, I love mine.  Custom made, and worth it.

Step one: der B and I put boxes in the center of the kitchen, where the table would go.  This gave us an idea of how movement in the kitchen would change with the table in place.

Step two: We got the height worked out just right.  I'm tall, so I needed a taller table.  I figure a short person would be more comfortable with a shorter table.

Step three: We found a dealer who could work with the factory on getting the table made right.  And he did!  The first try, the table wasn't the right height at all (a mis-measurement), and the dealer was able to get them to correct it correctly on the second try.  Much better than having to argue with the factory ourselves.

If you can find exactly the right table at a store, from what they have in stock, fine.  But don't blame me if it isn't exactly what you want.

The Unseemly Hum is gone - something to do with a ground wire the Direct TV people hooked up - it did something to the subwoofer and my Wiring Man used a grounded plug on the subwoofer and now all is well with the world and I am happily watching The General.  In about an hour I'll be having a massage, my first in over nine or ten months.

I found LOST to be a terrific action drama. I guess it's going to be a bit JURASSIC PARK, but that's OK. I still found it very entertaining. And someone spend a great deal of money on this. The sound effects were as booming, rumbling, and powerful as any top tier action film. My subwoofer was rumbling through a great deal of the show.

CSI: NY, however, I was not especially impressed with. The case wasn't the greatest (always a problem with a heavily plot-based shows like the CSIs are). I love Gary Sinese as an actor, but his character is so morose and sterile that I found the show decidedly hard to warm to.

Good Evening!

Well, I'm digging my new digs right off the "Miracle Mile".  -And I have to say those Metro Rapid busses along Wilshire just seem to come along whenever you just look at the bus stop!  It's a nice neighborhood, and I didn't realize I was just a few blocks away from the Museum District and the La Brea Tar Pits.  I shall be spending my day tomorrow culturally enriching myself.

As for today, well, I just enriched myself.  First it was the tamales and pupusas from the street vendors.  Then it was some baked goods from the bakery around the corner - including a slice of pistachio(!) bundt cake.  Then it was a short bus ride up La Brea to Melrose in order to get to Pink's.  Another stop on my tour of L.A.'s culinary landmarks.

Since it was my first time at Pink's, I got the "traditional" chili-cheese dog, as well as a chili-dog with kraut.  And a Grape Crush to wash it all down.  So good!  <burp>

I don't know how someone could get down some of their specialty dogs.  The combination of toppings and just the sheer amount of food.  WOW!?!?!?

http://www.pinkshollywood.com

Then I walked up the street a few blocks, caught the 212 Bus to Hollywood and walked around for a bit.  And I took some pictures this time.  I finally realized that it would be my last free night in Hollywood (this time round).  And since the air was nice and dry and clear today/tonight, I was able to get some nice pics of the Hollywood Hills.

It was a very nice walk, and the street was too crowded tonight either.  And the cool evening air was/is very nice too.

Well, time for me to tend to some stuff...

Laters...

I wasn't crazy about Lost, but I will give it another chance.

I liked Matthew Fox (from Party of Five). ANd I liked the girl he was with.  But there were just too many characters that meant nothing.

And also I hate the monster on the island aspect.  I could care less about some evil creature.  I'd rather see the relationships.  If we have to watch week after week of some creature attacking them, I will not be happy.

I agree, Jennifer.  I'd rather see a show about how a bunch of realistically portrayed people stranded on a deserted island handle is without it turning into "Gilligan's Island."  And when the people saw the trees disappearing VERY quickly, wouldn't some of the totally freaked out?  That sort of thing just doesn't happen in rea life!

But I will admit (as usual) that Matthew Fox and Dominic Monaghan are nice to look at. ;)
