Last night I watched part of a movie sent to me by DR MBARNUM.....THREE NUTS IN SEARCH OF A BOLT.....I shall discuss this in detail when I finish watching it.
Consider yourselves warned.
A couple of weeks ago, we were discussing John Ford's
CHEYENNE AUTUMN.
I hadn't seen the film in years, so I took another look at it yesterday.
As one would expect from Ford and Monument Valley, the cinematography is sensational, but the movie itself is one big mess. There are continuity and coverage problems throughout.
The basic story of the Cheyenne's trek is, actually, pretty involving, but then Ford throws in all this other crap [e.g. the entire Jimmy Stewart sequence], which is not only unnecessary but also stops the forward motion of the picture.
And, as far as performances are concerned, the truth is that Ford was never an actor's director. I don't think that he really knew how to direct actors, which is why you find so many overblown performances in his pictures. [Patrick Wayne is really emulating his father in this picture; reading his lines as "the Duke" would have read them.]
Any truly memorable performances in Ford's pictures, I believe, came from the actor's themselves.
But, in the immortal words of BK, "who am I? Ebert & Roper?"
